Highlight your most relevant qualifications for the job by listing them first in the job description.

For example, consider a candidate seeking a job in interior design. The resume might reflect a retail experience in which 75% of the candidate's time was spent on the sales floor, and 25% was spent designing window and floor displays. Since the design of window and floor displays is most meaningful to an interior design employer, this should be listed before sales.

Employers like numbers. It's much easier to look at signs and symbols than it is to read words.

Emphasize Accomplishments Over Responsibilities

It's important for employees to know you have the necessary experience to do the work required in the position. Still, many candidates will have this relevant experience.

To stand out, emphasize how you added value. Focus on accomplishments, rather than responsibilities.

As seen above, numbers can be your friend when it comes to  highlighting your accomplishments in your resume . As well, numbers provide context. For instance, you might say, "Increased revenue by 5%, after several years of decreasing sales."

Or, rather than saying, "Answered phone calls and dealt with customer concerns," you can say, "Resolved customer concerns, answering approximately 10 calls per hour. Became go-to person on the team for dealing with the toughest phone calls and most challenging complaints."

Employers want to know what you accomplished. Make it easy for them to see what you've done by using numbers and percentages.

While it is important to keep descriptions short, adding details and context can help show employers why you'd be a good match for the position.

I spent days researching the best resume practices out there, trying to craft the perfect document that was sure to land me the job.

I wanted my resume to stand out. To make an impact on the hiring managers. I wanted it to work.

And you know what? I made it work.

Surprisingly, all I did was tweak one part that hadn’t crossed my mind before – the job description .

Now, let’s start with the question on everyone’s minds.

To put it short, a job description section on your resume shows the prospective employers your past work experience (paid, internship, and volunteer), as well as your key skills and accomplishments demonstrated at a specific job.

As I said, recruiters don’t really care about all the daily duties and responsibilities you’ve had before, even if your past job is relevant to the one you’re applying for.

I guarantee, every other applicant that’s held a similar position will have had similar duties. Your job title itself lets the recruiter know what they are.

It doesn’t matter what you did, but how you succeeded at it.

So, what you need to do is highlight your accomplishments and skills while you outline your duties. This shows the hiring manager that you can bring value to the company.

You don’t need to go into too much detail – a simple statement, such as “Created a custom client dashboard that reduced support tickets by 50%” is enough to show what you’ve brought to the table.

However, you can’t just throw any old achievement in there. You need to curate your content. So…

Vet your experience and select the most relevant information

You don’t have to list your entire work history when you write your resume job description, just as you don’t have to list every single responsibility.

What helps is to pinpoint which part of your experience will be the most important to the recruiter and focus on that.

Prioritize the information you include in your job descriptions. You may have achieved tons of things at your past job – but which one is the most relevant? Find out and put it first.

Try and put yourself in the employer’s shoes.

Will a recruiter looking for a web developer be impressed by how you increased Walmart’s Pepper Jack sales by 30% in a week?

Probably not, unless it’s his favorite cheese.

So, research the company, the position, and what is most important to them, and then match it to your skills and accomplishments.

Let the numbers speak for you

Take any achievement of yours. Can the information be represented by symbols and numbers? If yes, then do just that.

People find reading concrete symbols and signs easier than reading words.

Let’s go back to our cheese example from before. Which of the following statements is more impressive:

“Increased cheese sales” or “Increased Pepper Jack sales by 30% in 1 week by leading a successful marketing campaign”?

Even something as ordinary as cheese can sound fancy when you throw in raw data like that.

Be very specific when talking about your achievements and quantify as much as possible.

Make attention-grabbing section headers

Your work experience section is perhaps the most important part of that document. So, make it stand out .

You don’t have to name the section anything specific – Work Experience, Work History, Experience, Employment History – all of these are fine.

Just make sure it’s clearly visible. Go for all-caps, or bold, or add an accent, contrasting color.

Put your work experience in a visible spot

I’ll say it again – your work experience is one of the most important sections of your resume.

Most recruiters will say that the resume job description is their main source of information on whether the potential employee will do well at a certain job.

So, it makes sense to put it somewhere where it can’t be missed.

Add this section right after your resume summary and before any others, such as Education , Languages , and Skills .

List your resume job descriptions in a reverse-chronological order

This is a very popular and quite useful tactic, and it’s perfect for most resumes, with minimal exceptions.

Start with your current or last job . Move on to the position before that, then the one before that , you get it.

By doing this, you guarantee that the hiring manager sees the best of you and your abilities.

Use between 3 to 5 bullet points for each job

The easiest way for a recruiter to scan through your work experience section is if you use bullet points to list your achievements, skills, and duties.

For each position, use from 3 to 5 bullets. The more recent the job is, the more bullet points you can use. The farther back you go, the fewer you need, and you can only list the most relevant information.

You don’t need a bullet for every single achievement and skill, either. You may have succeeded in a lot of different areas, but not all of them will be important in all cases.

Customize your resume and tailor the information to the job description.

Start each bullet point with an action verb

Eliminate any unnecessary words wherever possible. Hiring managers don’t need all the fluff, and no one wants to read through a 3-page essay about your previous work experience.

Keep it short and sweet.

Another helpful tip is to begin with the successful result of your actions, followed by the action itself.

“Increased Pepper Jack sales by 30% in 1 week by leading a successful marketing campaign”, remember?

Recruiters are more likely to remember the result than the process.

Include the benefit your actions and results had on the company goals

As I mentioned before, you need to decide on what will be most important to the company.

Not only do they want to know that you can succeed at the job, but they also want to know what you can bring to the table, what value you can add.

Give the hiring manager context, too. Show them how your skills can be used in practice.

I understand that it’s easier to write a resume when you have experience. It can be difficult for those straight out of college to figure out what kind of experience they can include.

I’ve been in that position, too.

Just because you don’t have any actual paid work experience doesn’t mean you’ll have to leave that section blank, though.

If you’ve only just graduated and you don’t have that much relevant experience, you can place the education section first, focus on your academic achievements, and put the resume job description after.

In the actual work experience section, you can highlight any other relevant experiences, for example – unpaid internships, volunteer work , student organizations, etc, up to 4 or 5 positions.

For your resume to really succeed, it’s important that you tailor it to the specific job you’re applying for.

You shouldn’t send the same resume with every application, just as you wouldn’t send the same cover letter.

But how do you tailor a resume to a job description ?

Don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds!

One of the first things you should do is read the job description that came with the job offer. Read it once, then read it twice, then read it three times.

What you’re trying to do here is identify what’s most important to the company and what they’re looking for in an employee for this particular position. They want to know what you can bring to the table.

Match the content of your resume to the job description. If you’re applying for an engineering job , don’t talk about your time as a cheese salesman, unless parts of what you learned and achieved are really relevant.

A helpful trick is to pay attention to the keywords. Go over the job description and the position requirements and highlight any key ones.

Think of stuff like “detail-oriented”, “resourceful”, and “communication skills”.

Then make a list of all your skills and achievements.

Match those skills to the keywords. The more matches you make, the better your chances of writing a resume that lands you that coveted interview.

Sprinkle those words around your resume, and especially in your work experience section. This will help you pass the automatic sorting system, as well as catch the eye of the recruiter that scans resumes for keywords.

And, as mentioned previously, since personal skills are difficult to teach, employers value those who show up with solid personal skills from the start. 

In-demand personal skills on a resume

Below are seven valuable personal skills to highlight on your resume to successfully grab the attention of prospective employers. 

1. Communication

Every employee has to discuss their work efforts, challenges, goals, and more at one point or another, to ensure forward movement and productivity. This makes effective communication one of the most valuable personal skills you can have. Even an individual contributor who has little interaction with others needs to be able to communicate both verbally and in written form. 

2. Creativity

Creativity means you come up with solutions to problems in new and different ways. Creative thinking enables innovations and advancements within the work environment - and what employer doesn't value that?

3. Problem solving

Problem solving skills are required daily to determine the best way to approach a task, handle project bottlenecks, deal with conflict, and navigate challenging relationships. As such, employers love hiring employees with stellar problem solving skills. Plus, where there's effective problem solving, there's also critical thinking, analytical thinking, and creativity.

4. Teamwork

We rarely work in a vacuum, making teamwork skills necessary to accomplish departmental tasks and meet goals. Teamwork also requires collaboration, another personal skill in high demand.

5. Conflict resolution

Though we tend to shy away from conflict, it's a natural part of life and is unavoidable. As such, conflict resolution skills are necessary for a supportive work environment. 

6. Time management

Employees have a lot on their plates from day to day, so to ensure timeliness, proper prioritization, and the ability to reach goals, time management is a must. Effective time management also helps to alleviate stress on the job and supports organizational skills, among others. 

7. Leadership

Leadership is a vital skill for success. Even if you don't hold the title of “Manager” or “Supervisor,” leadership skills can show up in all sorts of ways, from effective teamwork and taking ownership to leading by example and admitting when you've made a mistake. Also, individual contributors with solid leadership skills frequently advance to leadership positions when the opportunity arises, making it a personal skill that tends to place individuals on the “high potential” list within an organization.

If you're struggling to come up with a list of personal skills for your own resume, no worries. Here are some tips to help:

Ask others: One great way to identify your personal skills is to ask others for input. To keep it focused, consider asking a question like, “What are the top three personal skills you see me display?”

Review the job description: Read through the job description carefully and highlight all of the personal skills indicated. From there, consider which of those skills you possess. 

Make a list of your past achievements: If you're unsure of where to start, simply make a list of some of your most notable work successes. Then, ask yourself which personal skills were required for those accomplishments, and write them down. 

Consider past performance appraisals and feedback. Think back on performance reviews and feedback you've received from peers and supervisors. Which of your skills and abilities got high marks and why?

How to highlight personal skills on a resume: show vs. tell

When it comes to personal skills on a resume, it's not enough to simply list them, as you might with technical skills. Instead, you need to be able to show and prove you have personal skills through your accomplishments and achievements. 

For example, instead of listing leadership, problem solving, and critical thinking on your resume, show that you have them in your resume summary or work experience section by highlighting an accomplishment like:

  • Spearheaded development of, and implemented, new company-wide project management processes and procedures, resulting in improved communications between stakeholders and reduced bottlenecks by 11% quarter over quarter

The above bullet point sounds a lot better and more descriptive than:

  • Strong leadership, problem solving, and critical thinking skills to support new processes and procedures

Where to showcase personal skills on your resume

Now that you have some tips to come up with a list of personal skills you can be proud of, as well as how to highlight them, let's discuss the best places to incorporate them on your resume. Some options include the following sections:

Resume Summary

Work experience, hobbies and interests.

Employers often receive hundreds of resumes for any given position, which is partly why they skim resumes and make a decision about your candidacy within six seconds. As a result, your resume summary needs to clearly state your unique value proposition to quickly grab the employer's attention so your chances of landing in the “yes” pile improve. One way to do this is to highlight a few of your top personal skills in your resume summary and, as mentioned previously, provide proof that you have them through your accomplishments. For example:

Dynamic Human Resources Manager with 15 years of experience. Proven track record of increasing retention rates by 8% and improving employee morale rating by 15% through new employee relations initiatives and improved leader-employee communications. Skilled in compensation design, policy development, operational support, succession planning, and career development. 

Without specifically stating them, this summary indicates several personal skills. The accomplishments mentioned could not be achieved without professionalism, effective communication, time management, organizational skills, leadership, innovation, and critical thinking, to name a few.  

The achievements you list for each position within your Work Experience section provide the perfect opportunity to showcase your personal skills. For each accomplishment you include, indicate the key personal skills used. For example, as a Customer Service Representative you might highlight your conflict resolution and critical thinking skills by describing a time you managed and resolved an escalated customer complaint with a positive result.  

Though a Hobbies and Interests section isn't standard, it can be beneficial and add value to your resume under certain circumstances, one of which being if you're concerned that your resume lacks some personal skills based on the job description requirements. With that scenario, as long as your resume won't spill over onto a third page, consider any hobbies or interests you have that might add value and fill in the gaps.

Let's say, for example, that your work history up until now has given you little opportunity to work as part of a team or collaborate with others, though it's an important skill for the job you're applying for. In that case, you might include a team sport or charity activities you're involved in that speak to your teamwork and collaboration abilities.

How to develop and improve upon personal skills

It's possible to develop and sharpen your personal skills throughout your career. Here are three tips to help. 

Identify areas for improvement. The first step to improving upon your current personal skills is to identify areas for improvement. Do you need to learn to communicate more effectively with your peers? Are you struggling with time management and prioritization? Once you know where your weaknesses lie, you can lay out a game plan to improve. 

Seek out training and certifications. After you've identified personal skills you'd like to improve or sharpen, seek out training or certifications to support you. It's possible to find many free and low-cost training and certification programs for all types of skills by doing an online search. Another positive about securing training and certifications is that it indicates your drive for professional growth and development, which employers tend to notice. 

Reduce stress. Often, our personal skills take a hit when our self-care goes by the wayside. Be sure to take steps to take care of yourself and reduce stress. Doing so can support you in being more productive and having easier access to personal skills at work.

Customize your personal skills for each job

Now you know why personal skills on a resume are essential and how to incorporate them. To share one more piece of guidance, be sure to customize the personal skills you list on your resume for each job application you submit. In other words, tweak your resume to align with the skills required in the job description you're applying to. And finally, be proud of your personal skills and make them shine on your resume to land those interviews!

5 tips that make top candidates stand out from other applicants in a tough job market, according to a recruiter

It's not you, it's the market.

I find myself saying this on a daily basis as a recruiting manager at a tech company. I've been in recruiting for nine years, and I see brilliant people who were getting multiple offers a few years ago finding themselves unable to land even an interview .

Many Americans say they are looking for a new job in 2024 — and many of those folks want to land a remote role.

At the same time, less than 4% of posted roles are remote. And the high number of applicants means that recruiters must move quickly and be extremely picky.

How do you stand out as a job seeker?

1. Align your résumé as closely as possible to the job you're applying for

Studies show that recruiters are spending under 10 seconds doing an initial scan of your résumé before deciding if they want to look further.

What are they looking for?

Whether you meet the requirements listed in the job description

Experience within the job family and industry

Evidence of impact on the business

If you show this, you stand a good chance at moving forward.

Remember, no amount of doctoring your résumé will overshadow simply being unqualified for a role . So I also recommend doing an honest assessment of your qualifications and whether your résumé will objectively demonstrate to someone who does not know you that you meet the qualifications.

If the answer is no, it may not make sense to apply for that job.

2. Apply early

In a world where many positions get hundreds or even thousands of applications within a few days, recruiters may find many highly qualified candidates among the first few applications they review!

Being an early applicant — ideally within the first 24 hours — can maximize your chances of getting an interview.

If you're able to get a referral or have someone at the company who can reach out to the hiring manager on your behalf, this can also help accelerate the review of your application.

3. Reach out to the hiring team

If the job posting shows the recruiter or hiring manager, consider sending a message on LinkedIn. If it doesn't, a search of the company's LinkedIn page can help you identify a few people who could be helpful.

Reiterate your enthusiasm about the role, highlight a couple of things that make you a great match, share that you're happy to answer any additional questions about your qualifications, and let them know you can't wait to hear back.

Why does this help? Well, when I see these messages from applicants, I tend to check their profile or application, and if it's a strong match, I'll flag it for the recruiter or hiring team to check out. As noted above, given the high application volume, this can help bring attention to an application that might otherwise be missed.

One note: don't be disappointed if you don't hear back — not everyone checks their InMail, and it's easy to miss these messages. But it's a quick and easy way that can help get eyes on your application more quickly.

4. Sell yourself

This next one takes a bit of extra work, but less than 1% of candidates do things like this, so it really stands out. Consider creating any of these:

A short video introducing yourself

A deck where you outline some of your experience that makes you a strong match

A small portfolio of your work and linking this on your résumé and in your networking messages

These are the sorts of things that are standard in some fields (like design or writing), but people in most fields don't share artifacts that bring their work to life.

Creating something like this can really help you stand out. It shows what you can do for a company, and it's particularly helpful if you're a career changer who wants to show that your previous experiences will translate to a new context.

Sending thank you notes or following up with a work sample that brings to life something that was discussed in the interview are other steps most candidates skip that can leave a positive impression on the hiring team.

5. Project confidence

Most job seekers feel really defeated right now, and that can translate into how you present yourself in interviews.

But there's tons of psychological research that shows that if you speak with confidence, it will inspire greater confidence from the team about your ability to do the job.

Don't be afraid to speak like you're moving forward in the process, or that the job is yours.

Cast a vision for what you plan to do in your first few months in the role. Following an interview, don't be afraid to follow up with the hiring manager to share takeaways or additional ideas.

All of this reinforces that you really want the role and can bring a lot to the team. And because very few candidates take these steps, it really helps you stand out.

For many job seekers, taking steps that can feel "extra" can be daunting, especially when you're applying to so many roles. But I also think going "all in" on a small number of roles that you're really well qualified for can ultimately result in needing far fewer applications to land an offer.

Job-hunting is never an easy task, even in the best of times. If you're not dealing with it yourself, you likely know someone who is sending out resume after resume after resume and hearing nothing back but crickets. 

The problem is multi-faceted, from the ways technology like applicant tracking systems and AI bury people's resumes to widespread recruiter layoffs leaving hiring managers overwhelmed.

Career expert,  Courtney Johnson , said there might be some very simple tweaks job seekers are overlooking that could make all the difference. 

Johnson shared 7 reasons you're not getting job interviews and what to do instead.

These are tweaks job seekers can make that can improve their chances at landing an interview — and they're all about working smarter, not harder in your job search.

1. You're not optimizing your resume for each job description

Most of us have heard this one time and time again, but when job-seeking is all about volume the way it is today, who has time to go through re-editing their resume for every single job app? 

Nobody, frankly. Which is why Johnson suggests letting a robot do it. "A really easy way to do this is just put your resume into ChatGPT," she said, "and then put the job description into ChatGPT, and ask ChatGPT to optimize your resume based on the keywords in the job description." 

2. Your resume isn't optimized for applicant tracking systems or ATSs

It's vital to remember that the first pair of eyes on your resume are software. The computer system doesn't have any critical thinking skills or common sense! You have to play its game. 

Most of us have heard this advice time and again, too, but it's hard sometimes to know exactly how to go about implementing it. Johnson said this is another time to lean on the robots.

Much like optimizing applications for the job description, she suggests job seekers "just put your resume into ChatGPT and ask it to ATS-optimize your resume." Done and done.

3. You're not personalizing your applications

A common mistake Johnson sees is people who "are just kind of spraying and praying" — i.e., sending as many resumes out as possible and hoping for the best without doing any sort of "customization" on their application.

Johnson said if you're not doing some due diligence to make your application more specific , "you're not going to stand out."  Job-hunting isn't just about volume, after all.

4. You're not applying to a high enough volume of jobs

Okay, but it also is all about volume. Johnson said that a lot of people have "an unrealistic perspective on how much volume you need to apply to."  Finding a job nowadays truly is a numbers game , and Johnson noted that any time she's been in the job market it's taken at least 100-200 job applications to move the needle. 

"If you've only applied to 10 jobs and didn't get an interview, yeah, it's because you only applied to 10 jobs." Getting your volume up may sound intimidating, but using the automation tools Johnson noted previously will greatly reduce the load. 

5. You're not reaching out to people at the company directly

Speaking of customizing your job applications, Johnson said it's imperative to get in touch with someone at the company if at all possible. "Always reach out to the hiring manager directly or somebody that works in the organization," she said. "Try to get a referral."

She also explained it can help to just send a LinkedIn request to someone at the company. A bit awkward, yes, especially if you're more introverted, but connections are the key to standing out in today's job market. 

6. You're not using LinkedIn enough and your profile isn't optimized

Speaking of LinkedIn, Johnson says that regardless of how much some of us hate it, there's simply no way around it: LinkedIn is one of the biggest keys to getting a job nowadays, and it's essential to both post on the platform and have a really good profile.

As Johnson bluntly put it, "I don't care what industry you're in, they're most likely going to stalk your LinkedIn profile, and if your LinkedIn profile is [bad], they're not going to hire you. They're not going to want to talk to you."

There are, of course, tons of resources online for how best to use and optimize your LinkedIn profile for a job search, which incidentally is a service Johnson herself offers.

7. You're not working with recruiters

"Recruiters' entire livelihood is based off of you getting a job," Johnson said, so use them! "They will literally fight to the death to get you a job." That means the wheels are greased right from the get-go. 

Johnson added that recruiters will also help you with a lot of the previous tweaks she recommended, like optimizing your resume and LinkedIn profile.

So how do you find one to work with? Once again, it's all about LinkedIn. Johnson said to go to the app and search "recruiter, your industry, your area" — so, "recruiter accounting Philadelphia," for instance. Then reach out and ask for their help and expertise.

These tips won't necessarily fix your job search overnight, but they will help you cut through all the noise and nowadays, that's half the battle when it comes to job-hunting.

A recruiter on TikTok posted a viral video telling job candidates not to lie on their resumes. Viewers don’t think it’s a problem. 

Caty (@thatcareercoachcaty) has reached over 164,000 views and 4,000 likes on her video as of the publication of this story. Caty frequently uses her account as a “Recruiting Expert & Career Change Coach Helping You Get Hired.” She has a resource link with multiple job-related courses in her bio.  

Caty captioned her video, “Here’s What Happens When You Lie On Your Resume.” 

To begin her video, Caty says, “This is a reminder to anyone who is currently applying to job right now.”

“Please do not falsify your resume, and please do not lie in a job interview,” she continues.

Next, Caty tells a story about how a client of hers was hiring for a specific position in their office. She says the client had found their top candidate and decided to extend an offer.

As the client extends the offer, Caty says, “The candidate discloses that they are six credit hours short from graduating.” 

“The client is taken aback,” Caty adds. “They’ve had three interviews at this point.”

Caty says the client reached out to her for help, so she decided to double-check the candidate’s job application and resume. 

She says both of these “indicate that they graduated in a specific year.”

“On the job application, they indicate that they had a bachelor’s degree,” she adds.

Then, Caty mentions that “the kicker” is that a degree is “not really required for the job.” 

In order to give the candidate the benefit of the doubt, Caty says she asked them to explain the situation. 

“Because there could be a million reasons why this happened,” she explains. 

“But what the candidate told my client and what the candidate told me were a little different,” she adds. “Some inconsistencies.” 

Ultimately, Caty says her client decided to pull the offer. “Because legally, this candidate falsified their application, indicating that they had a bachelor’s degree when, in fact, they did not.”

Before ending her video, she says, “Maybe lying on your resume is gonna get you the interview.”

“Maybe it’s gonna get you an offer,” she adds, “but I guarantee it will come out in the background check process.”

Disagreeing with Caty, a lot of viewers say they don’t see a problem with lying on your resume.

One comment says, “employers lie as well..once you get the job sometimes it’s not even what you applied for…”

“Ok why do jobs lie on the job description,” another agrees. 

A few viewers mentioned that the lie the candidate made was not a big enough deal to terminate the hiring process. 

“3 interviews in? They liked what they saw obviously. Regardless of the degree,” one says. 

“6 credits is two classes. You found the top candidate which means they have the experience…the client was wrong. and the candidate dodged a bullet,” another says.

Some admit that lying on their resume has actually worked out for them. “I lied about being an expert on excel…but I made it lol. 9 years strong now,” one commented.

Another says, “My employer lied to me about bonus, raise, and vacation time. I will now be lying on EVERY interview.” 

The Cornell Law School states in its resume inflation report that “under 18 U.S.C. § 1001 candidates who are found guilty of resume fraud will be fined or imprisoned if they knowingly and willfully make any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation.”
