DIY Doll School Supplies Pencils and Homework

This summer, my daughter has been doing a great job keeping up with homework sheets. We went on a weekend vacation getaway and I wanted to keep the momentum going, so I made some easy DIY doll school supplies for her to take with us with her American Girl doll. I figured that this would make doing homework on vacation more fun for her (and it worked)! Here is how I made these mini pencils and homework sheets.

Time: 30 Minutes

Materials for Pencils:

• Disposable Bowls or Plates
• Craft Paint (Black, Pink, Silver or Gray)
• Orange Marker

Instructions for Pencils:

First, cut the one end of the toothpick with mixed media scissors so that one end is squared and the other end is pointed. You may be able to skip this step depending on your toothpicks. I used paint for the next steps.

I think you could use markers, but this way is easier. Dip the pointed end of the toothpick in black paint, roll the toothpick against the plate or bowl to remove excess paint. The paint will dry quickly. Next, color the base of the toothpick with an orange marker. Dip the other end of the toothpick in silver or gray paint and remove excess. Allow it to dry. Repeat and add the pink tip for the eraser with pink paint. You can lean the pencil up against the rim of the bowl or plate to dry.

Time: 20 Minutes

Materials for Homework Sheets:

• Any School Work Sheets
• Camera Phone
• Computer and Printer

Instructions for School Work Sheets:

These are great because I had my daughter pick the sheets she wanted to do on our trip and then I made the exact same ones for her doll. First, take a picture of each worksheet with your phone. Crop the picture to the edges of the worksheet. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Move the pictures to your computer and place each image onto a work document. Resize the picture to about 3 inches tall. He width can vary. Print and cut out the pages.

Do your children love playing school? This is one of my youngest’s favorite things to do with or without friends.

For Christmas, one of her favorite gifts were two doll-sized desks to go with her new American Girl Doll. Two of her dolls act as the students while a third is the teacher.

She loves playing school and will sometimes make her own worksheets for her dolls. This inspired me to make some of my own worksheets for her to use.

Not only does she think the pages are fun, they also sneak in a little bit of learning as she helps her dolls complete the tasks on the pages.

These Doll Worksheets

You will print these worksheets on 8 1/2 x 11 pages of paper.

They are set up to have 9 doll-sized worksheets on each page. You will find an assortment of math tasks, reading activities, coloring pages and mazes for children to complete with their dolls.

After printing, you will cut apart the pages to make your very own doll worksheets. Some children might like to cut out a folder out of construction paper to place their worksheets in.

I’ve also included a blank template page so your child can make their own worksheets. They can write their pages in black pen to make them look more like real worksheets.

School books and work sheets for american girl doll.

What you need

• Elmer's glue for books
• Clear self-adhesive vinyl cover (optional for book)
• Parchment paper or similar to keep book pages from sticking together

Awesome! I was wondering if you changed the resolution? I did everything you did using the 9 images,but the images are not crisp and clear; rather blurry. How do I go about changing this, or is the setting in the printing?

No, I did not change the resolution, just picked 9 pages per sheets to decrease the size. I have done this many times and on laser and inkjet printers. I have never had a problem. If you open your created PDF file, are the pages there crisp and clear? If not, check your downloaded pages. If all the files look ok, you could try to print to a pdf printer (CutePDF e.g) to create the 9 pages per sheet as a new pdf file and then print that. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. The photos on education.com are all sized at 130x70. I right clicked over each image to save the image as. All photos come up as png files. I saved all 9 of them to my pictures, then I selected all 9 of them, and then merged them into a pdf file. Changed the printing settings to allow 9 images per page. I used a inkjet printer and printed it on cardstock.

You need to download the files as pdf by clicking on them.They are meant for kids and the pdf files are letter size, sometimes 2 pages long, one with the questions and one with the answers. Don't save the images, download the pdf file then you should have no issues. Hope that helped

Hi! I was wondering if I could use photo wizard for pdf. files. If not, what should I use?

I am not familiar with photo wizard but you could use anything you want if you can merge multiple pdf files into one. The only reason I am doing the merge is, that I would like to save paper and print 9 pages on one sheet instead of multiple pages each with a small page. Hope that helped.

You have to got to www.education.com and pick your class level and subject. Then you can download the pdf files. Hope that helps.

How do you make the cover, I've been trying to figure it out for days and i cant think of anything

the cover needs to be a rectangle with the height the same as the book pages (long side of the pages) and the width of the rectangle is 2x width of page + the height of your stack of papers (for the spine of the book). Then fold the cover twice to create the spine to accommodate the height of the stack of papers. That's it. Hope that helped

I think I've found an easier option to get doll-sized worksheets - I went to the website (had to do a quick Google search for US grade explanations since I'm English!), selected 3rd grade and a subject, selected a worksheet and right-clicked on the preview image, selected "View image" (as it then comes up slightly bigger than on the webpage) and saved that. I then selected nine images with the mouse pointer, right-clicked on one of them, selected "Print", selected the Wallet (9 images per page) option, unticked "Fit image to frame" and printed. I cut the worksheets out and voila, my doll was happily filling the sheets out ;)

A life with Russian dolls: One family’s creative traditions

Masha and Lena Dmitrievy.

Yuri, the father, makes the doll out of linden wood while Anna, the mother, and her daughters Masha and Lena, paint each one in their own unique way. Masha and Lena’s parents met while working at the Sergiyev Posad toy factory. They have instilled their love for doll making into their daughters since childhood.

“When we were small, mom and dad used to paint Russian dolls, not only at the factory but also at home in the evenings,” says Masha. “Therefore we also got involved with it at an early age.”

Young Masha and Lena not only decorated the Russian dolls but also played with them. Nowadays they may be married adults, but they still play with the dolls.

“I do not think you should look at Russian dolls with completely seriousness,” Masha continues. “Therefore, we view the process of creating dolls as fun and games.”

In addition to painting dolls, Masha and Lena work at the Sergiyev Posad Museum. Masha works with the dolls and gives master classes in different Russian cities while Lena works with fabrics. Therefore, her Russian dolls are often dressed up in clothes with patterns copied from vintage designs.

The factory doll versus an artist’s doll

Anna is the main artist at the toy factory in Sergiyev Posad. She develops manufacturing samples for sequenced doll prototypes made at the factory.  They are painted with gouache paint and all bear the same identical pattern.

Decorating Russian dolls gives unlimited scope for creativity. Every artist finds their own favorite themes and images. Lena always paints her dolls with animals – goats, sheep, chickens and even owls.

Masha’s favorite theme is family. Her large sets include all members of the family, from a grandmother to the tiniest of babies. The largest collection decorated by Masha consisted of 30 dolls.

“There are some Russian dolls that are so big that you could even fit a child inside,” remembers Masha. “When I was young and visited my father at work, the artists placed me in a big doll and closed it. It was actually very scary.”

The smallest wooden beauty in the Dmitriev family was made by Lena and is only four millimeters tall.

Modest beauty

For the Dmitriev family, Russian dolls are the standard of beauty, the image of the Russian woman. Masha and Lena describe the perfect doll:

“The first and oldest Russian dolls essentially had almost unrealistic facial features; they were introverted, modest and silent. We try to stick to these principles in our work and preserve the image of gentle, Orthodox beauty. We try very hard. What if all Russian women were to be judged based on our dolls’ appearances?”

Russian dolls not only symbolize Russian women, but also Russian families.

“All of the dolls in one set sit next to each other,” says Masha. “If we remove one member of the family from a set then there will be an empty space, confusion.”

The desire for simplicity

In the Dmitriev household you can find “kokeshi,” traditional Japanese wooden dolls, sitting alongside their Russian counterparts. Kokeshi and Russian dolls have a lot in common and artists from both countries are often interested in each other’s work.

“When I was in Japan for the first time, a Japanese newspaper published my article where I wrote about how much I love kokeshi,” says Masha. “One Japanese woman from Tokyo read this and said that she wanted to give me her collection of kokeshi dolls. So, we received some remarkable dolls.”

Masha says she loves the kokeshi dolls for their simplicity. The less an artist does with the wooden doll, the better the toy.

“Artists are always trying to add something and paint it on,” Masha says. “In our family we try to continue the tradition of subtle painting, so that everything is painted in one stroke.”
