IELTS Writing Task 2: Environment (Opinion Essay)

Environmental protection should be the responsibility of politicians, not individuals as individuals can do too little.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer:

Many people believe the responsibility for protecting the environment should belong to politicians rather than individuals who are hardly capable of doing anything. In my opinion, individuals can actually do a lot so they should share such responsibility with politicians.

To begin with, individuals can contribute greatly to environmental protection by doing it together. For instance, they can protect wildlife by encouraging each other to boycott companies that make money at the expense of animals. The effect of such an action could be little if performed by a few citizens but once everyone joins hands, their impacts on the environment would suffice to make changes. One single post on Facebook reporting Vaseline’s use of rabbits and monkeys for testing purposes may not matter, but with thousands of shares, internet users across the globe have successfully forced this company to abandon animal testing and release those animals to the wild.

Therefore, not only politicians but also individuals should assume this responsibility. Because both of them are living on the same planet, any problem resulting from environmental degradation would negatively affect everybody no matter who they are. For example, in case of air pollution, people are all at higher risk of respiratory diseases regardless of their occupations. Even their children’s well-being is also threatened if they are born and raised in such a polluted atmosphere. Therefore, preserving their habitats is synonymous with protecting their future generation.

In conclusion, the responsibility of safeguarding the environment should fall on all people in society whether they are politicians or not, as every individual is able to do this.

IELTS Model Essay: Environmental Problems

IELTS Model Essay Environmental Problems

In this post, I’m going to write an IELTS Writing Task 2 model essay in response to this question about environmental problems from  Cambridge 14 (Academic) :

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own  knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

First of all, I’ll take you through my 4 Step Approach to essay planning :

  • Analyse The Question
  • Decide My Position
  • Generate My Ideas
  • Develop My Ideas

Step 1: Analyse The Question

The first thing to do is analyse the question. One way of doing this is to ( VERY carefully ) simplify the question. In this question, I think  the simplified question is this:

What is the most important environmental problem?  Is it species loss…or something else?

We can also simplify the 2 views:

View 1: species loss is the main environmental problem.

View 2: there are “more important” ones.

What might these “more important” environmental problems be? Global warming comes to my mind.

Step 2: Decide My Position

So, what do I REALLY think about this issue? In other words, what’s my position on this issue?

I think species loss is a major problem, but I think global warming is the more important one. However, I think the two problems are linked: my understanding is that global warming will lead to species loss anyway; if global warming causes species loss, it makes sense that global warming is the bigger problem.

Step 3: Generate My Ideas

Next, I need to generate some ideas for this essay .

I must also remember that the question is asking about environmental PROBLEMS, not solutions.

View 1: species loss is main environmental problem.

Well, I agree it’s important. Why do I think this?

  • important to protect species – we share the world – moral obligation
  • also loss of species affects humans (e.g. affects food chain, loss of fish in seas means less food for us)

View 2: there are “more important” problems.

I think global warming is a more important problem. Why do I think this?

  • danger that global warming will escalate and lead to runaway warming
  • ultimately this will lead to species loss anyway

Step 4: Develop My Ideas

Next, I’m going to develop my ideas using a logical structure . This will give me a clear essay plan.

Introduction :

  • species loss a major concern, but is it main one?

Body Paragraph 1

  • Main Idea: moral obligation to protect species
  • Explanation: loss of species is permanent, future generations
  • Example: dodo

Body Paragraph 2

  • Main Idea: loss of species affects humans
  • Explanation: food and drugs

Body Paragraph 3

  • Main Idea: global warming is more important
  • Explanation: runaway heating will lead to more problems, including species loss
  • Example: polar bears
  • both are important, but global warming will cause species loss, so  it’s the most important problem.

I decided to write 2 separate paragraphs in my discussion of the first idea – it seems more logical to do this.

So, all I need to do now is expand these notes into full sentences and link them together ! While I write, I must, at all times, remember my position: species loss is an important problem, but global warming is even more important, and they are also linked.

So here’s my essay:

My Model Essay

The loss of natural habitats, in part due to intensive agriculture and industrial-scale mining in some parts of the world, as well as urbanisation, has put the survival of many species of plants and animals under threat. While this is certainly a major concern, is this the most pressing environmental problem that we should deal with?

I certainly feel that humanity has a moral obligation to safeguard the survival of different species of fauna and flora. The loss of any species is permanent and means that future generations will not be able to appreciate the wonders of a diverse natural world. For example, the tragic extinction of the dodo is something which we still lament even today.

Moreover, it can affect us detrimentally too. Many herbal remedies are derived from plants, and so the destruction of rainforests could easily have a negative effect on the production of medicinal drugs. In addition, we are part of a natural food chain, so the loss of animals, such as fish, means we will have less food in the future.

Ultimately though, there is a far wider problem that needs to be addressed: global warming. As a result of emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, global temperatures are rising and we risk seeing runaway heating. This will lead to a number of problems, including flooding, extreme weather and drought, but also the extinction of species. Indeed, polar bears are already struggling to survive because of the loss of polar ice caps due to rising temperatures.

In other words, working to safeguard the survival of the natural world without tackling global warming would be entirely ineffective, so it’s not really a case of which one is more important: all environmental issues are ultimately interconnected, and so we need to take a holistic approach to the issue.

My Comments

Task response: had I just argued that global warming was more important than species loss, it would be good enough for a Band 7 or 8 for TR, but I went further: I argued that both problems are important, and that they are linked. It’s a more developed position, and I think worthy of a Band 9. But explaining this position requires some advanced language, so it’s tricky for many students to do well.

Vocabulary : I desperately wanted to use the phrase “flora and fauna” somewhere! (If you don’t know it, fauna = animals, flora = flowers. There’s also a lot of natural collocation in this essay, and these phrases have precise meaning:

  • intensive agriculture
  • industrial-scale mining
  • under threat
  • the most pressing environmental problem
  • has a moral obligation to
  • herbal remedies

There’s some repetition of words: loss, survival and species are repeated, but this is not a problem. I’ve tried to paraphrase where appropriate (e.g. “natural world” instead of “species”).

Overall, the essay uses “natural and sophisticated control” of vocabulary, with no errors (as far as I can tell!) so it’s at a Band 9 level.

I hope you like my model essay. Remember, it is only ONE possible response out of an infinite number of possible responses to this task. If you want to read more about this topic, here’s a great article by The Guardian newspaper about the loss of insects .

Where is conclusion ? I think conclusion is mandatory to complete the essay without sum up or conclusion it will affect on overall band score, from task achievement no one can get good band score.

The conclusion is in the final paragraph, which starts “in other words”. It probably would be clearer if I’d started it “in conclusion”, but I used a different discourse marker to improve the flow of the essay.

Great essay Charlie

Thank you very much for your generosity.

IELTS essay, topic: Who should be responsible for protecting the environment, individuals or the government?

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

Scientists believe that the world is in danger due to environmental changes. Some people say that personal lifestyle changes should be made to reduce the damage to environment, while others think that the government should do something to help. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample Band 8 Essay

Environmental problems are clearly something that is often discussed in today’s world. One part of the society claims that individuals should change their habits and lifestyle to improve the ecological situation. Others, on the other hand, believe that this issue should be solved on the governmental level. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and my perspective will be offered.

environment protection essay ielts

It is hard to deny that human kind is responsible for the current environmental situation, and it seems impossible to achieve any noticeable result in this field without the participation of vast majority of individuals. For instance, a simple lifestyle change such as introducing the separation of household rubbish can make recycling projects more convenient and efficient. Moreover, consumers can reduce their usage of plastic items and, in turn, less plastic waste will contaminate the environment.

However, many people still feel that the government has more tools to prevent environmental changes. One option that the authorities have is to discourage citizens from using personal vehicles by charging high taxes and additional fees. Moreover, politicians usually have access to resources to educate people about environmental problems and promote the most important ecological projects on all levels, ranging from special courses at schools to TV shows and websites related to this topic. Furthermore, it is a key responsibility of the government to protect the environment by spending state funds on research and modern equipment. Countries where legislation protects the ecology, for example Norway, have achieved visible results and overcame most environmental problems.

In conclusion, I believe that a combined approach will work best to prevent or reverse environmental changes. A contribution of every individual is just as important as the intervention from the government in order to fix existing issues and save our planet for future generations.

IELTS essay sample | Environment protection is the responsibility of politicians

by Manjusha Nambiar · September 11, 2016

Essay topic

Politicians are more responsible for protection of the environment than individuals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample essay

Environment problems are threatening the very existence of life on this planet. Some people feel that environment protection is the responsibility of politicians. I don’t agree with this view. In my opinion, individuals and politicians need to make a joint effort to save the planet.

There is a limit to what an individual or a politician can achieve on his own. Politicians can frame laws to protect the environment. ‘Green’ laws are the need of the hour. Environment protection laws can stop factories from polluting the rivers and seas. They can stop deforestation. They can also prevent mindless quarrying and the destruction of natural resources. Even so, there is a limit to what we can accomplish through legislation.

A politician can’t control what people do in their private spaces. For example, many families burn plastic to get rid of it. They don’t realize that they are releasing harmful gases into the environment. Some families own four or five cars. They don’t understand that vehicular pollution is one of the chief causes of global warming. A lot of things that we do to increase our comfort have negative repercussions on the environment. We don’t realize that. When we drive a private car or fly, our carbon footprint increases. No politician can stop people from flying or using air conditioners in their homes. Aeroplanes, refrigerators and air conditioners all contribute to global warming and their users are ordinary citizens like you and me.

To conclude, everyone has a responsibility to save the planet they inhabit. Political will can achieve a lot. Individuals need to make their contributions too.

  • Problem, Cause and Solution
  • Discussion
  • Double Question

The key to nailing IELTS writing task 2 band environment 9 is following a systematic process. First and foremost, students’ need to understand the type of question asked and if it is from the list mentioned above. After that, they need to identify the keywords in the question and follow the instructions diligently.  Secondly, students can write in bullet points and elaborate these in the answer sheet. This is a part of structuring the answer and can help in time management.  Thirdly, they must structure the essay into paragraphs. One must begin with an introduction that states the opinion, followed by a topic and supporting sentences in two or three paragraphs. Lastly, they must summarise the points stated in the body paragraphs.  Remember that the introduction and title must be linked as it shows the flow of ideas. This is a part of the task achievement criteria. Furthermore, students can also make use of linking devices to connect the introduction and title. For example, they can begin with ‘The main cause of this’ or ‘The main factor is’.  Last but not the least, one must utilise a wide range of clauses. Some of them are underlined below:

  • ‘What do I mean by this statement?

Vocabulary for Writing Task 2

They can start by:

  • It may seem that
  • The essay will show that

Today, the Earth is facing a massive threat in the form of a climate crisis and it is believed by many that the most efficient way to tackle the world’s environmental issue is by augmenting fuel prices. Conservationists would deem this method to be effective and I agree with this notion; however, up to an extent, as it heavily impacts the livelihood of the poor people. On the one hand, it is a potent solution to increase the rate of crude commodities like oil since that would force people to try alternative methods of transportation and in turn reduce their carbon emissions. Fostering the habit of cycling and carpooling for instance could be the go-to method. The Netherlands is one such country to have adopted the systemic approach by inflating the fuel prices thereafter urging the nation to take up cycling and subsequently becoming a greener nation. Additionally, it would also discourage people from purchasing automobiles that run on petrol or diesel and encourage them to switch to electric vehicles.  On the other hand, the obvious reason why a hike in fuel rates would not be a better solution for humanity is that it could worsen poverty. People with meagre incomes and daily wage earners would have a hard time saving their salary for their basic needs if their travelling expenses increase. Besides, the fuel price determines the market prices of other essential commodities, and increasing the price can affect poor and middle class families. If this practice were to take place in India, for instance, there would be a spike in the number of families struggling to afford food and household essentials.  In conclusion, increasing the price of petrol can certainly help reduce environmental pollution to some degree ; however, I feel that educating people about the ill effects of the overuse of natural resources and encouraging them to use alternative methods would be a better solution in handling this issue as it will not further deteriorate the life of the poor.

Sample Essay 1

In today’s world, environmental degradation is an issue that impacts every organism on planet earth and is one of the biggest challenges being faced by humans. While it is generally opined that it is our responsibility to ensure that the environment is preserved and protected for the future generations, there are a few who argue against this opinion.

Those who oppose it being the responsibility of present generation to ensure environmental protection assert that the existing predicament is a result of many generations playing fast and loose with the environment and so, why should one generation be weighed down with this mammoth task .

However, taking this stand reeks of shirking responsibility . The fact remains that we have inherited a planet which is battling perilous environmental issues such as climate change. As many studies have shown, this is high time that steps are taken to, first, stop the degradation and then, reverse it too. The grave responsibility falls on the humans inhabiting the earth today as it has the scientific knowledge that their antecedents did not have, to understand the gravity of the current environmental situation and fight it. Moreover, one of the reasons for the ruin of environment is the consumer culture and materialistic mentality that have become an integral part of modern lifestyle. These, along with harming the environment, have also resulted in stress and dissatisfaction for people. Hence, reversing this way of living will serve the dual purpose of ensuring ecological balance and individual happiness.

I strongly believe that not only should we conserve the environment for future humans but we should also do so for all the flora and fauna of the world. The planet earth is ours for the duration we are on it both to enjoy it and to safeguard it; therefore, sustainable development needs to be the motto of one and all.

environment protection essay ielts

Posted on Feb 2, 2018

Please find below my essay on the topic number 4. Please help me in evaluating this. Thanks in advance.

Reducing global environmental damage should be handled by governments rather than individuals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is no exaggeration to say that the environmental pollution has reached its peak in the last decade and major steps have to be taken to keep a check on this. While some people might argue that only government should be responsible to take action on this, I do not agree with this completely. It is a responsibility of both Government and individual to take corrective actions.

The environmental pollution has been one of the biggest global issues that we all are currently facing. Industrial plants have been dumping its residual waste in the water and also toxic gases are being released in the air. Government has to take some strict measures in this regard. The rules and regulations have to be made more stringent and law need to enforce that the people follow them judiciously. Any non-compliance to these should be severely punished. Government has to take the bull by the horns and tackle this with utmost importance.

It is also the responsibility of every individual to contribute towards environment protection. They need to follow the instructions set by government towards saving the environment and at the same time they also need to do their bit at an individual level. Making more use of Public Transport can be one of the very good action to save air pollution. Also they can encourage the conserving of energy as much as possible at home or work place. Using products that has renewable energy sources like, solar water heater etc.

In conclusion, the environmental pollution is undoubtedly the most critical global issue and has to be addressed immediately. It is the responsibility of both government and individuals to do their bit for protecting our environment.

Hi Here is my essay on topic 2. Please evaluate.

Development in technology has brought various environmental problems. Some believe that people need to live simpler lives to solve environmental problems. Others, however, believe technology is the way to solve these problems. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is an undeniable fact that with the technological advancement, there have also been increase in the number of environmental issues. Some of the environmental problems are directly related to the technical development. Some suggest that living simple life might help in reducing the environmental degradation while others have an opinion that to put a check on the environmental problems we should use advanced technology.

Although we say that because of the Technology our life has become simpler, in my opinion it in fact has become more complicated which is not directly realized. The lavish lifestyle that all of us are desiring to live at the minimum include a huge bungalow, best car and international destination holiday every year. All these have a huge impact on the environment around us. There has been exponential increase in de-forestation in last decade. All the industries dump their toxic waste into the surrounding air and water which also has an adverse effect on the environment. Carbon Footprint for each of us has gone up because of the frequent domestic and International travel.

Leading a simple life will definitely have a huge impact in helping environment recover from the damage that has been done by us. Also scientists all over the world have developed some great products which will help in putting a check on the environmental pollution. There are lot of products in the market which works on natural source of energy. They also conserve lot of energy. If we switch bring such products in to our day-to-day life then that we will help in environmental recovery.

To conclude, I think both the simple living life and the advanced technology can help us in reducing the carbon footprint and global warming. We should be smart enough to use the best possible from both the ways of life and save our only earth so that this planet will be well preserved for next generations.

This is my essay for topic 1. Please make time to help me assess it! Thank you in advance.

Some people think that in order to prevent illness and disease, governments should make efforts in reducing environmental pollution and housing problems. To what extent do you agree to disagree with this statement?

Recent years have witnessed a proliferation of measures targeting to combat diseases and improve the well-being of global citizens. One of the most feasible proposals suggested is a governmental initiative to mitigate environmental and housing issue. As a personally point of view, I totally agree with this for a number of reasons.

First of all, in many parts of the world, especially industrial areas, issues associated with the environment are ever-increasing, threatening the lives of local residents. In the modern age, the promotion of fast-growing industries has become the major focus of various nations, leaving them in blatant ignorant of environmental consequences. To illustrate this, thousands of factories operating worldwide not only discharge a huge amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere everyday but also dump unprocessed chemical waste into water sources illegally. This will be the catalyst of the booming of innumerable diseases among the citizens of the modern world. Should the law makers impose severe punishments and fines against these unlawful acts, the risk of people contracting pollution-related illnesses will be substantially reduced.

Furthermore, by making concerted efforts to improve housing quality, the government can eradicate the existence of many contagious diseases from the root. Since the advent of urbanization, inundated influxes of immigrants have come to city in hope of better job employment and higher living standards. This has come with greater demand for city resources to accommodate these people and as a result, housing prices has been rocketing. Low income individuals are therefore succumbed to poor quality houses with limited facilities and unhealthy environment, subjecting themselves to numerous health issues. The most effective answer lays in the government’s endeavor to supply its underprivileged citizens with low priced accommodations to help improve their life quality and above that their health condition

To sum up, I am convinced that the authority should be held accountable for its people’s well-being both mentally and physically by means of enhancing ecological quality and housing standards. However, it is also imperative for each and every one of us to exert a joint effort so as to rid our society of detrimental threats such as diseases and illnesses

A crucial element of the IELTS Speaking Test is the cue card task, which evaluates a candidate's proficiency in expressing their ideas coherently and fluently. A good performance on this task can significantly impact the Speaking Test score, essential for achieving a desirable IELTS score.

One of the commonly used cue card topics in the IELTS Speaking Test is "Describe a law on environmental protection." Upon receiving this cue card, the candidate has one to two minutes to discuss the topic and may take notes to aid in organizing their response.

Table of Contents

Download e-books for ielts preparation, describe a law on environmental protection ielts cue card sample answers., important ielts exam resources, describe a law on environmental protection ielts cue card follow up questions.

The following is a possible sequence of responses for this cue card.

What exactly is it? How did you first become aware of it? How do you feel about this law?

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

Introduction: In my country, the government enacts various laws to ensure the smooth operation of the state.

What exactly is it: I'd like to talk about a very important law recently passed to protect the environment. It is quite unfortunate to see the environment deteriorating daily, and if not taken seriously, it will have disastrous consequences. Plastic waste is currently the most difficult challenge. Plastic makes up a large portion of solid waste, which is constantly increasing. Every day, millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in landfills. Because it is a non-biodegradable product, it will remain there indefinitely. At the same time, it emits extremely hazardous substances.

How did you first become aware of it: Plastic waste is currently the greatest challenge, in my opinion. This is because plastic makes up a large portion of solid waste, which constantly increases. Every day, millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in landfills. Moreover, it will remain there indefinitely because it is a non-biodegradable product.

How do you feel about this law: It is resulting in a significant reduction in waste production while also keeping the environment clean and green.

Introduction: From air and water pollution to climate change and deforestation, the world faces increasing environmental challenges. As a result, governments worldwide have enacted various laws and regulations to protect our natural resources and maintain the planet's ecological balance. The Endangered Species Act , enacted in the United States in 1973, is one such law that is intended to protect and conserve endangered species and their habitats.

What exactly is it: The Endangered Species Act is a federal law aimed at protecting plant and animal species that are on the verge of extinction. The act forbids the harm, harassment, or killing of endangered species and establishes a framework for their population and habitat recovery. It also forbids the trade of endangered species and their parts or products, whether alive or dead.

How did you first become aware of it: The Endangered Species Act first came to my attention during my studies in environmental science, where we learned about the various laws and policies that govern environmental protection. We talked about how the Endangered Species Act is an important tool for protecting endangered species and their habitats and how its provisions can help prevent the extinction of species that are critical to the ecological balance of our planet.

How do you feel about this law: As an environmentalist, I strongly support the Endangered Species Act and its mission to protect endangered species and their habitats. Every species has a right to exist, and our responsibility is to protect the natural world for future generations. The Endangered Species Act, in my opinion, is a critical component of environmental protection, and I hope that it will be enforced and strengthened in the coming years.

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

ENVIRONMENTAL

Would you like to work in a company related to environmental protection?

(Answer 1)

Well, why not? I would love to if there’s an opportunity. To be honest, I’m really passionate about protecting the environment. I’ve joined several environmental organizations that promote environmental awareness ( knowledge of a situation or fact) to people, especially those who are city dwellers ( a person that lives in a specified place) and I love it so much.

(Answer 2)

Not at all, my educational attainment doesn’t fit that kind of company. Practically speaking, I go for ( to choose something) a company where I can utilize ( make use of) the degree I obtained and more importantly a company that pays decently. Although I don’t have any interest in working in that kind of company, it doesn’t mean that I’m indifferent ( unconcerned) to environmental protection, I do care about the environment.

How can we protect the environment?

Being ordinary citizens, I believe we can do a lot. First of all, we must strictly abide by ( to obey or conform to the rules) environmental laws. We can practice recycling, save electricity as much as we can, avoid wasting water, minimize the use of cars, and many more. These things I’ve mentioned are the little things that we ordinary citizens can do, however, when everyone is doing all of these things, I’m pretty sure that the current environmental condition will significantly improve.

Well, we can do the common ways which our parents or teachers taught us like recycling and saving energy. But if we are really serious about environmental protection, we need to elect public officials or choose a political party that truly cares about the environment or we have to pressure ( persuade) these government leaders to act on providing solutions to the never-ending environmental problems. I believe that’s more powerful in protecting the environment.

Do you think you’ve done enough to protect the environment?

Despite being an active volunteer at several environmental organizations, I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t done enough. I know that I can still do more than what I’ve done and because of that, I will continue contributing something that can improve the state of Mother Earth. It sounds cringy ( to cause embarrassment) for some but I already claimed that that’s one of my missions in life.

I don’t think so. Yes, I’ve been practicing some little ways to protect the environment but I’m not religiously doing that every single day of my life. However, I’m trying to be more responsible because our planet Earth is undeniably changing – the weather has become so unpredictable, so many natural disasters have occurred, icebergs are melting, and the sea level is rising. These things make me think that we’re starting to pay the price ( to suffer the consequences of one’s actions) .

Is there education about environmental protection at school?

Yes, back when I was a student, we had one curriculum about science and the environment which taught us the importance of environmental conservation ( prevention of wasteful use of resources) and preservation ( the act of keeping something as it is) . To be honest, I found it boring since I didn’t have a clear understanding of its value. I’m glad I’ve exposed myself to certain environmental organizations, which helped me open my mind ( be prepared to consider or acknowledge) . I just hope that schools these days realistically teach their students about environmental protection.

I believe so because there’s a science subject in primary and secondary schools. I’m pretty ( fairly; reasonably) sure teachers teach their students some environment-related topics as I had them when I was a student. And I must say, that was one of the valuable lessons I learned in school.
