How to Start a Private Bus Transportation Business in India? [Cost, Requirements]

Running a transport business in India is quite profitable. There are different types of sectors within the transportation segment, one of which is private bus transportation. Private bus transporters run buses within a city, within a state, across states, and also ferry corporate passengers from one point to the other on set routes every day.

If you wish to start a private bus transportation business in India, there is some amount of groundwork that you will need to do before you begin setting it up. We’ve simplified it for you and got you all that you need to know about setting up your transportation business.

Steps Involved in Setting Up a Private Bus Transportation Business in India

1. preliminary research.

Before setting up your transportation business in India, you must know the industry inside-out.  You must understand how the industry operates, the legalities that the industry is bound by, and the rules and regulations that the business must follow. Since you are looking to set up a private bus transportation business, you need to be well aware of the rules and regulations that govern bus transportation for passengers.

2. Business plan and registration

Once you have done your preliminary research and know the basics of the industry, it is time to chalk out your business plan. This must include the kind of buses that you would like to include in your fleet, both in the short term as well as in the near future, the market segment that you wish to target, mission statement, your vision, perform competitor analysis, projected expenses, and the structure of your business. Your business plan must also include your business model –

  • Whether you wish to buy your buses or lease them
  • What services do you wish to provide to the customers?
  • Costs involved
  • What is your competitive advantage compared to your competitors?
  • What routes do you want to operate on?
  • What are your marketing and promotion plans?
  • What challenges do you expect to face in the first 6 months, 1 year, and so on?

This business plan document is going to be your blueprint to help you through the initial few years of your private bus transportation business.

3. Vehicle buying and loan

With your business plan done, the next important thing to do is to source the vehicles - rent/lease or buy. If you wish to buy your own fleet of buses, it is always recommended to buy up to 2-3 buses initially. This will require huge capital, and so, investing in too many vehicles initially is not recommended. You can buy a used bus, as they cost less and you can purchase 2-3 vehicles in one shot with your initial investment. Based on your finances, you can also begin your loan application or borrow money from the investors, if any. Never buy just one bus and try your luck on the same.

4. Decide on a profitable route

Once you have decided your vehicles, it is now time to shortlist and finalise the routes that are the most popular. While you determine the route popularity, you must also perform some expense calculations that can help you determine which routes are also profitable.

5. Secure licenses and permits

Setting up your private bus transportation process requires you to get a whole lot of licenses, permission, and permits for the business as well as the vehicles. You will need the license required to transport passengers, a license as a transporter, RTO permissions, and other necessary permissions to be able to permit the buses to move within a state or from one state to the other.

Every business is successful due to great leadership and dedicated staff. The next obvious step to setting up your transport business is hiring the staff who will run your buses and manage the customers in-transit.

7. Marketing your bus transportation business

Once the staff is on board, the next step is to launch the business and begin marketing it. It is important that you market to your target customer. You must also list yourself on online portals like Redbus, Bitla, Abhibus, etc. With online bookings becoming the new norm, people are usually looking up tickets here. Getting yourself up on these portals and attracting your customers is the best way to ensure bookings keep coming in regularly. In fact, 90% of private bus bookings come from the above-mentioned online portals.

Another way to get bookings is by partnering with booking agents or owning a physical office where your customers can make bookings.

8. Design the best customer experience to create trust

With the primary work and setup done for your private bus transportation business, it is now time to work on creating the best customer experience for people who ride your buses. This is where you can really make the difference in being different from your competitors by giving your customers perks and benefits like online check-ins, offering complimentary water bottles, snacks, premium seats with added leg rooms, etc. A great way to gain your customer trust and retain is by having a robust customer service and care team. Most bus transport providers often overlook this.

9. Grow your business

It will take anything between 3-6 months or even a year for your private bus transport business to take off and give you substantial profits. Work consistently on marketing it to more customers, retaining the existing and new customers, and continuously making your process more and more efficient.

With consistent growth in terms of customer numbers, a high percentage of returning customers, and increasing profits, the next step is to meet demand with the supply by increasing your fleet and routes and setting off a virtuous cycle of a successful transport business.

Is a Private Bus Transportation Business in India Profitable?

Now that you are armed with all the information you need to set up your private bus transportation business in India, are you wondering how profitable this business is? Here are some factors that affect this transportation business’ profitability:

  • No matter the route of your bus, there are so many bus operators and transporters that there is always a cut-throat competition on ticket pricing, and putting a tight ceiling on the prices of the tickets.
  • One of the biggest hurdles of setting up this business is its initial high cost of procuring new vehicles that result in steep financing options. If you are looking to purchase luxury coaches of Volvo, Scania, and Mercedes, you might have to shell out around a crore in today’s time.
  • Fluctuating Indian markets is something that we all have to live with. In a business like this, the fluctuating markets can have an impact on your newly launched private bus transportation business.

Setting up a private bus transportation business requires a lot of financial investment, time, and consistent effort. While everything may appear set from the get-go, it takes some time to gather a clientele. The business is a very capital intensive one and requires one to have enough financial backing for sailing through the initial rocky years. However, cutting through tariff restrictions, market fluctuations, and price wars, this is a great business to enter as there is always a demand in this segment.

Buses are the most dominant form of public transportation in India. They connect even remote villages to metropolises.

With rapidly developing road infrastructure, India has huge potential for the bus transportation business. While state-run buses form the backbone of the system, there’s also good demand for private buses.

If you’re interested in starting a bus business, this article provides some important information you need to know before launching one.

In this Post

Difference between Intra-city and Inter-city Bus services:

The bus transportation system can be divided into intra-city and inter-city bus services. You need to decide which service has demand in your region.

Intra-city (within city limits):

Intra-city buses travel shorter routes within city limits, making frequent stops and carrying many passengers. They run throughout the day according to strict schedules.

These buses are typically smaller but have high passenger capacity. They serve daily commuters and students primarily.

Permit requirements for specific routes are managed by local authorities. The market is competitive, with both public and private operators vying for ridership. Initial investment costs are lower due to the smaller size of the vehicles.

Inter-city Bus (between cities):

Inter-city buses cover longer distances with fewer stops, resulting in longer journey times. They are larger and often equipped with amenities like reclining seats and entertainment systems.

Booking systems are advanced, offering online and offline options and sometimes flexible pricing. Business travellers, tourists, and families are the main users of inter-city services.

Permits for crossing state borders are required and regulated by both state and national authorities. Competition is lower compared to intra-city services, and initial investment costs are higher due to the requirement for larger buses.

Purchasing a Bus

Choosing the right type of bus is very crucial in the bus transport business. Before choosing a bus you need to consider factors like whether are you operating within the city or between towns or rural areas.

Also, decide on the amenities you require and it should come under your budget. Make sure there are enough service centres for the brand of bus you are planning to purchase.

In general, the price range for various types of buses is as follows:

  • Mini-buses: Start from ₹8 lakhs for a basic model like the Tata Magic Express used for shuttle services.
  • Standard buses: Cost around ₹20-30 lakhs for popular models like Tata Starbus City or Ashok Leyland LP 410.
  • Intercity coaches: Range from ₹35-55 lakhs for basic models to over ₹1 crore for luxury coaches.
  • Electric buses: Are more expensive, with options like the Tata Starbus EV 4 starting from ₹2.3 crore.

Different brands and models within the same category will have varying prices based on features and specifications.

Used buses can be significantly cheaper, sometimes even half the price of new ones, but require careful inspection and may incur maintenance costs.

What are the top Bus brands in India?

Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharath Benz, Eicher Motors, Volvo Buses, and Force Motors are some of the top Bus manufacturing brands in India.

What are the widely used bus models in India?

Tata Starbus, Ashok Leyland JanBus, Eicher Pro 1200 City, and Volvo 9600 are some of the widely used bus models in India.

Investment Required for Bus Transportation Business

To start a bus transportation business in India, you may require an investment ranging from ₹10 lakhs to ₹2 crores. The investment amount depends on the type and size of the bus and the amenities you require.

The breakdown of the investment amount is as follows:

  • Purchasing the bus
  • Licenses and permits: This includes route permits, state permits, vehicle registration, and driver’s licenses.
  • Insurance: For bus, passengers, and staff
  • Business registration: Sole proprietorship/LLP/Pvt. Limited
  • Spare parts and tools: Or, amenities depending on your service type
  • Basic supplies: Such as uniforms, first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and ticketing equipment
  • Marketing and promotion: Intercity bus services require marketing and promotions

The Operational Costs

Revenue Streams in Bus Business

The bus transportation business in India generates revenue through various channels,

  • Regular Fares or Ticketing ( is the primary source).
  • Some buses carry parcels alongside passengers
  • Offering discounted passes for frequent travellers can attract loyal customers
  • Leasing exterior and interior space on buses for advertisements
  • Renting out buses for private events

Challenges in the bus transportation business:

The Indian bus business is very competitive. Standing out from the crowd and competing with big names can be tricky.

Additionally, the rise in popularity of growing popularity of cars, scooters, and ride-sharing apps adds to the competition.

On top of that, keeping the business profitable is an uphill battle. Fuel costs, repairs, insurance, and salaries keep rising.

Safety is also a major concern. From accidents to passenger security, bus companies need to invest in training, technology, and better infrastructure to keep everyone safe.

While starting a bus transportation business in India comes with its fair share of challenges, careful planning and consideration can pave the way for success.

With nearly 36.5 kilometers of roads being constructed in India every day, there is an increasing demand for efficient road transport across the nation. Today, the rapidly expanding roadways network in India provides a great opportunity for new entrepreneurs to invest in transport businesses. Transport businesses majorly include running taxis, auto-rickshaws, on-demand cabs, and commercial vehicles for intra-city and inter-state goods transport. With the demand for transport services rising by 10% annually, the transport business market is ripe for new entrepreneurs.

Below, we will look at the basic steps towards creating a transport business plan and the various kinds of transport businesses that one can set up.

Creating a Transport Business Plan

  • Choosing a Transport Business: Transport businesses can be broadly categorized into passenger transport and goods transport businesses. Passenger transport includes taxis and other commercial vehicles that are used to ply passengers and goods within villages, towns, and also between different cities and states. Freight or goods transport can also be within regional geographical locales or across cities and countries. Unlike passenger transport, goods or freight transport carries raw materials and ready-made goods for consumption, retail business or industries
  • Getting to know the Business: Like any other business enterprise, one needs to conduct research to understand the feasibility and profitability of a business enterprise. Since this may vary regionally, one will need to understand the specification of the transport business market in the regions that one wants to operate in. This will include the fleet of vehicles that a business owner will have to invest in, the loan schemes available for setting up such a business, important and popular routes, and making business connections with already successful entrepreneurs in the transport business
  • Registering the Transport Business: To set up any kind of transport business, one will require legitimate licenses for the transport personnel and vehicles that are registered for business purposes. Legitimate licenses are mandatory for the setting up and management of a transport business
  • Investing in Transport Vehicles: While this may seem an obvious step, this needs meticulous research if the business has to succeed. While the first criteria of choice will be based on the nature of the business i.e. whether passenger or goods transport, one will further need to choose the appropriate kind of vehicles that will be practicable for the given context
  • Insurance and Tracking Devices for Transport Vehicles: In the case of both vehicles for personal use or for business, vehicle insurance is mandatory. Today, however, there are also various tracking devices that can in fact prevent theft or help in the retrieval of stolen vehicles. Especially in the case of goods transport vehicles, one can also avail of extra insurance for goods that are being transported

Organizing the Business Team:

  • Drivers: For passenger or freight transport businesses, the primary personnel is the drivers. All drivers need to be above 18 years with legitimate licenses and adequate driving experience supplemented by on-the-job training. In the case of freight transport, truck drivers should possess a commercial license for large vehicles
  • Customer Care Executives and Accountants: Like any business, a professional customer care department is important for an efficient and smoothly operating transport business. The business will also need a good accounts team that can efficiently manage income and expenditure balances
  • Advertising the Company: Over and above the necessary logistics and research in order to set up a transport business, one of the most important components of setting up a successful transport business is a strong advertising campaign to promote the business

Transport business options.

In rural and urban India, there exists a complex system of public and private transport services constituted of a variety of motor vehicles such as auto-rickshaws, taxis, buses, and trucks catering to a wide demographic. These systems are distributed across a range of services such as public transport, on-demand conveyance, freight transport, and healthcare. Below are some of the transport services and transport business options that new entrepreneurs can invest in,

  • Taxi Service: Taxi service is one of the most lucrative transport business options these days. While a large portion of this market has been captured by ride-hailing and ride-sharing businesses like Ola and Uber, a large population continues to use private taxi services for intra-city, inter-city, and inter-state travel. With fast-expanding digital networks creating large data networks between entrepreneurs and consumers, a taxi business can be a highly profitable enterprise.
  • Bicycle Rental: While motor vehicles provide quickness, they are also environmentally unsustainable. With increasing awareness regarding ecological sustainability, many people today seek to use modes of transport that are less polluting and also offer the chance towards a healthier lifestyle. Owing to this, one can also consider bicycle rental services as a viable and profitable transport business alternative.
  • Freight and Logistics Services: Freight transport is possibly one of the oldest transport services and has changed only in form, owing to better motor vehicle technology and larger digital networks. Since it was and continues to remain absolutely necessary for a variety of business enterprises, freight transport services are one of the most profit-making transport business options.
  • Specialty Transportation: Specialty transportation can be considered as a subset of freight or goods transport where one can devise specialized transport services for specific industry needs such as the transport of huge industrial machines, large mechanical components such as airplane parts, windmills, etc. It also includes other specialized services such as modular houses, perishable frozen items, human organs, etc.
  • Livestock Transportation: Livestock is a primary component of many manufacturing industries and forms an important part of the supply chain for these enterprises. Livestock is also more vulnerable than other kinds of goods and this demands specialized kinds of transport services that can be tapped into by new entrepreneurs in the transport business.
  • Healthcare Transportation: Healthcare transportation can include ambulance services for medical emergencies and emergency services for road accidents etc.

Logistics and transport business requires a lot of investment and to carry out that investment business owners should be well aware of all the necessary information required to start a new business. Therefore, it is highly recommended to frame a detailed transport business plan to make a base for your business to further grow and flourish.

8 Steps for a Successful Bus Transportation Business in India

Bus Transportation Business

Starting a transport business in India involves great profits, no doubt. However, the transportation industry has different segments, and one of those is private bus transportation. The personal & commercial bus transporters run the buses within a city, state, and across the state. Not only this but also these buses carry corporate ferry passengers from one point to another on daily routes.

If you want to start a private transportation bus business in India, there are some groundworks you need to consider. To simplify, we’ve shared the factors you must consider before setting up the transportation business.

Start Bus Transportation Business: 8 Simple Steps

We’ve simplified the steps you need to know before starting a bus transportation business.

Preliminary Research

You must thoroughly understand the transportation sector before opening a firm in India. It would be best to comprehend how the sector functions, the laws to which it is subject, and the guidelines the sector must adhere to.

For instance, if you start a private bus transportation company, you must know the rules and policies that control passenger bus transportation.

Business Plan & Registration

The next step after preliminary research and knowing the industry’s basics is to work on your business plan. This involves the type of buses that you would like to consider in your fleet. The buses you will consider should be according to both short & long term. For example, many bus transportation companies consider the Mahindra Cruzio School bus due to its compatibility, features, and affordability.

Additionally, this would help if you create the plan according to the market segment, mission statement, vision, competitor analysis, projected expenses, and business structure. The business plan should include your business model –

  • If you want to buy the latest buses from Mahindra Cruzio Staff or lease them
  • Service you want to offer the customers
  • Cost involved
  • The competitive advantage compared to your competitors
  • Routes your want to operate on
  • Marketing & promotion plans
  • Challenges to expect in the initial years

This would be your blueprint of the business plan document to help you through the initial few years of your private bus transportation business.

Vehicle Buying & Loan

Once your company plan is complete, the next crucial step is to source the automobiles for rent, lease, or purchase. It is typically advised to purchase up to 2-3 buses first if you want to purchase your fleet of buses. Too many initial automobile investments are not recommended because this will take significant funds. Instead, you can buy second-hand buses because they are less expensive, and you can acquire up to three cars with your first investment. Then, you can start your loan application or borrow money based on your financial situation if there are any investors. Never purchase a single bus, and try your luck with it.

Decide a Profit Route

After finalizing the vehicle, it’s time to shortlist & decide the most popular routes. While determining the route, you must also perform some expense calculation calculations. This will help you know those routes that are profitable.

Secure License & Permits

You must obtain certain licenses to set up your private bus transportation procedure. To allow the buses to operate within one state or another, you will need the permit required to transport passengers. Not only this but also a license as a transporter, RTO approvals, and other essential permissions.

Undoubtedly, a business can only be successful with great leadership & dedicated staff. Therefore, hiring an experienced team to run buses and manage customers in transit should be the next step to establishing your transport business.

Marketing the Business

The next step is establishing and marketing the firm after the workforce has joined. It’s crucial to market to your target audience. Additionally, you need to register with some websites to get in the eyes of people. They frequently look up tickets here because internet reservations are quickly becoming the standard. The easiest approach to guarantee that bookings continue to come in consistently is to establish yourself on these portals and draw clients. The aforementioned online travel agencies account for 90% of private bus reservations.

You can also increase your bookings by collaborating with booking brokers or having a physical location where clients can make reservations.

Designing the Best Customer Experience

It’s time to focus on giving passengers with maximum possible experience who ride in your buses. And that’s where the foundational work of the bus service will be completed.

In the transportation business, you can stand out from the competitors by providing your clients with perks and benefits. These include online check-ins, complimentary water bottles, snacks, and premium seats with extra legroom. A bus like Mahindra Cruzio Staff has all those features that can work best on it. In addition, having vital customer service and care staff is a terrific approach to winning & sustaining your customers’ trust. Unfortunately, most bus transportation companies frequently ignore this.

It requires a lot of investment, time & constant effort to set up a private bus transportation business. As the bus industry is capital-intensive, it requires enough financial backing to sail through the initial rocky years.

However, one cannot negate how profit-enlivening this business is with its high market value. Therefore, despite tariff constraints, market conditions & price competition, this is an excellent business to go into.

Do you also want to become a part of this lucrative sector? If so, learn how to start a transport business in India below.

How to start a transport business

To start a transport business, you will need to:

Develop a business plan

Secure the capital, invest in transport vehicles, hire qualified staff, focus on branding.

Your first step in starting your own venture should be to conduct thorough industry research. After assessing the market and learning its ins and outs, you must develop a detailed transport business plan. It will help you identify the growth pockets and challenges related to this field.

Also, map out the regions you want your business to operate in and list your competitors. Next, highlight the number of vehicles you require and the capital you need to make it happen.

After you have a business plan in place, your next step should be funding. You can easily acquire a business loan to set up your company. All you have to do is maintain a good credit score, prepare the required documents, and apply for a loan with a trusted lending institution. Some lenders even provide collateral-free finance that can help you secure funds without putting your personal or business assets on the line.

Whether it is a goods or a passenger transport business, you must invest in the best quality vehicles to get the show on the road! But first, it is crucial to do your homework and pick the appropriate vehicles ideal for your business. Take a look at your competition for inspiration and research the transport licenses you need to acquire for your logistics company.

You certainly need to hire licensed drivers with top-notch driving skills and experience in driving larger vehicles for a transport business. In addition, you require other qualified professionals to run your customer care and IT departments. But this will require funds. So, look for a lender that offers business finance at competitive business loan interest rates to pay your staff while efficiently managing the monthly EMIs.

8 Steps Guide to Start Your Transport Business

Table of Contents

Starting a transport business can be a good way for business owners to make money. Transport businesses help move goods and people from one place to another. They are an important part of the global economy. With the rise of e-commerce and the growing need for transportation services, the transport industry is growing with a CAGR of 8.11% and is likely to earn over 15 trillion US dollars in the coming years. But, starting a transportation business is not easy. To make your business successful and profitable, you must make a transport business plan carefully and do research. To have the best transport business in India, you must have funding and the required permits and licenses. This article is a complete guide to how to start a transport business. It covers essential tips and techniques to start and grow your transport business. So, let us dive into the eight most important steps to start your transport business.

What Does a Transporting Business Do?

Transportation connects customers and suppliers throughout the supply chain and logistics. These experts make sure that customers get goods on time. They also ensure the safe and timely delivery of the goods to the correct destination. Transportation management is a big part of supply chain management. It lets businesses use their vehicles and find vendors and routes that work for both orders coming in and orders going out. Orders or shipments can be used to plan transportation, and transfer orders are a part of the outbound scenario. Transportation is a critical part of the business. It makes moving goods easier and helps businesses meet customer needs through mass production. Without a robust transportation system, it would be impossible to do business.

Transport Business Plan to Follow in 2024

Transport businesses need to have a solid transportation business plan. This includes hiring good people, getting the right vehicles, and making a detailed financial plan. Businesses in the transportation industry can set themselves up for success in 2024 by following these steps and keeping up with transportation trends.

Step 1: Choosing a Transport Business

The first thing you must do to start a transport business is to decide what kind of enterprise you want to run. You can choose to run a freight transport business or a passenger transport business in India. However, before making a decision, you should consider what the market wants, what your competitors are doing, and what you know.

Step 2: Registration of Transport Business

The second step is to get your business registered with the right people. To run your transport business legally, you need to get proper licenses and permits. You should also consider the tax requirements in your state or country.

Step 3: Investing in Transport Vehicles

The third step is to invest in transport vehicles. You can either buy vehicles or rent them. What kind of business you want to run will determine the type of vehicle you buy or rent. For instance, if you want to run a business that moves freight, you may need to buy trucks or shipping containers. If you want to run a passenger transport business, you may need to invest in buses, taxis, or planes.

Step 4: Tracking devices for transport business

The fourth step is to put devices that can track your vehicles. The tracking devices will help you track your automobiles and ensure their smooth running. The devices will also help you keep your drivers safer and prevent theft.

List of Opportunities in the Field of Transport Business

  • The movement of people and goods globally depends heavily on the transportation sector. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, there are still opportunities in the transportation industry.
  • One opportunity is the shift towards electric vehicles. EVs are expected to usher in a generational shift in mobility. This shift presents opportunities for businesses that can provide charging infrastructure and EV maintenance services.
  • Another opportunity is to update the country’s transportation system. Given that low-income communities with better access to jobs within a 15-minute commute have higher upward economic mobility, there is a business case for prioritizing equity in transportation.
  • When starting a transport business, it is crucial to know about the various types of transport businesses that one can start. Some of these include auto transportation, shipping, and medical transportation. To start a transport business, owners first need to develop a transport business plan.
  • The plan must cover aspects such as how to get a transport contract. It should also cover the broad guidelines for agreements done to consumer businesses.
  • In the transport sector, relatively more employees are needed in managerial positions and the posts of drivers.
  • Investments in transportation can influence the development and the environment while enhancing economic productivity. In the coming years, policy considerations will increasingly depend on how transportation affects where people live and where businesses are located. Companies that offer eco-friendly transportation options can take advantage of this chance.

8 Steps to Launching Your Transport Company

Starting a transport business requires careful planning and execution. Here are eight steps to launching your transport company:

Conduct Market Research

Obtain Licenses and Permits

The third step is to obtain the necessary licenses and permits to operate your business. To legally run your transport business, you must adhere to local regulations and receive the required licenses from your state or nation.

Secure Funding

The fourth step is to secure funding for your business. You can fund your firm with your money, take loans, or find investors. The costs of running your business, such as vehicle expenses, employee wages, and insurance, should also be evaluated.

Purchase or Lease Vehicles

The fifth step is to purchase or lease vehicles for your business. You should consider the kind of vehicles you require for your company and the costs involved in buying or leasing them. The expenses related to fleet ownership for maintenance and repairs should also be considered.

Hire Employees

The sixth step is to hire employees for your business. You must take into account the training and experience of employees like drivers, mechanics, and office staff. You must also evaluate their salaries and benefits.

How to Start Bus Service Business in India in 2023?

oldtimer 2678581 960 720 -

In a populous country like India, crores of people travel through various modes of transport every day. And buses have an important contribution to these transport modes, especially in carrying passengers from one place to another.

While earlier there was a severe shortage of roads in rural areas of India, now work is being done to connect almost all rural areas with roads under the Prime Minister’s Road Scheme. In which the government has almost succeeded.

In today’s time, it has become easier to reach the cities from the rural areas, because the rural areas have also been connected to the main roads. Generally, a common man uses the bus more while traveling from one place to another.

This is due to the fact that not all of India is connected by train, and the average person cannot afford alternative forms of transportation like cabs. The majority of Indians prefer to travel small distances in buses in such circumstances.

In such a situation, if you are thinking of starting a business related to transport, then you can start your own bus service business. How will you do this? Today we are going to tell this through our article.

How to Start Bus Service Business in India?

However, many people do not make any kind of plan to start their own bus business. That is, when they feel that they have money available to buy a bus, or they will get money from a bank or finance company to buy a bus, then they decide to start such a business without thinking about anything.

But if you want to reduce the risk coming forward in this business, then you should start your bus business well-planned and use your discretion. That is so that the possibility of failure of this business can be reduced.

Select a Business Model

Many people think that starting a bus business means buying your own bus and running it regularly on a route by keeping yourself or a driver/conductor. But here we are talking about the bus service business, and it is not necessary to buy a bus for this.

That is to say, any interested person who wants to start his own business has two business models to do so. The first business model is for entrepreneurs to open their own small offices in crowded place where there is a high demand for buses.

Meet people who have their own buses and get in touch with them and tie up with them. As soon as any person needs a bus for any work tour, for marriage, for religious travel, he will come to your office.

And you will book that bus for the customer by knowing about the availability of the bus from the owners of the bus. In this process, you are earning money through commission.

The second model we all know is that in this you have to buy your own bus, you can also buy one or more buses for your business according to your spending capacity.

This is the reason why an entrepreneur starting a bus business first needs to choose its business model. People who lack the money to start this kind of business can start this business through the first model.

But those who are a driver themselves and have enough money to start their own bus business or think that they will manage the money, then the second option is good for them.

Prepare a project plan

Now whatever business model you have selected for this, you should prepare a practical project report for it. There are many basic elements of a project report. But the estimated cost and estimated earnings are one of the most important points of this project report.

However, it includes the business model of the bus, how many buses to buy, where to keep the office, and where to arrange money to buy buses. On which route do the buses have to be installed in the beginning?

What will be the main source of earnings from buses? The estimated cost of commissioning the project and the estimated profit to be made in a year should also be given.

If you prepare a practical project report, then another advantage of this can be that you can easily get a loan from banks or non-banking financial institutions to start your own business.

Manage finances

Any business needs finance to change from idea to reality. It is a different matter that to start all types of business, different amounts of finance are required according to their size, nature, etc.

How much finance will be required to start this business (bus service business) will depend on which business model and how many buses the entrepreneur wants to start this business by buying.

By the way, if the entrepreneur has no prior experience of such a business, then he is advised to start this kind of business by just buying a bus.

But if the entrepreneur wants to make his investment more secure, then he should first do this business by adopting the first business model. And when he has experience, then he should buy his own bus.

If the entrepreneur wants to start this business by buying only one bus then he may need ₹ 17 – 35 lakhs. However, if the entrepreneur himself is a driver and has about 10-12 lakh rupees of his savings, then he can also do the rest of the amount by financing the bus.

The advantage of this will be that the entrepreneur will start his business from that bus and since he himself is a driver, he can give the salary given to the driver to the finance company every month as an instalment of bash.

Buy buses needed for business

After managing the finances, the entrepreneur’s next step should be to buy the buses needed for the business. At present, many companies in India such as Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Eicher Motors, BharatBenz, Mahindra & Mahindra etc. manufacture buses.

You should choose the bus company based on the services of the bus companies available in your area. A bus company that does not have any service center in your area nor any good showroom can cause trouble for you to buy a bus of that company.

That is to say, the design of buses of different companies can be different and the design of auto parts installed in them can also be different. In such a situation, if you buy a bus of a company whose service center or auto parts are not available in your area. Then how do you fix it?

Therefore, to start a bus business, decide which company’s bus to buy carefully. While selecting a bus, keep in mind how you are going to use that bus.

For example, if an entrepreneur wants to use his bus only to bring and deliver passengers to the tourist destination, then Volvo can be a good option for this.

Get necessary licenses/permits etc.

The entrepreneur can also register his business as a proprietorship firm and get PAN card and GST registration in the name of the business. But its inevitability will depend on the business turnover of the entrepreneur. Apart from this, many documents are required to run a bus on the road, some of which are listed as follows.

  • The registration certificate of the bus is usually applied for by the bus showroom at the time of buying the bus from the local RTO office.
  • Until your registration certificate comes, you can use the bus bill as a document. However, a fixed time of one month or 15 days is given for this.
  • The insurance certificate of the bus is required.
  • The fitness certificate of the bus is required.
  • Pollution certificate of the bus is required.
  • A bus permit is also required.

Some of these necessary licenses such as bus registration certificate and insurance are applied for by the bus showroom at the time of buying the bus.  While the rest of the licenses and permits have to be done by you yourself.

Select the route for the bus service

There are many areas where there is a need to run buses from the time table. In such a situation, there is a committee or organization of people providing bus service at the local level.

The entrepreneur can become a part of this committee and organization if he wants. But in the rest of the areas where there are no such organizations or committees, it is the entrepreneur’s own decision on which route to run the bus.

In such a situation, a route where there is a possibility of getting more passengers, the entrepreneur can run his bus regularly on that cry. However, there is no doubt that government vehicles are also present to transport passengers from one place to another.

But the demand for transport in India is so high that the transport service provided by the government here seems inadequate. In such a situation, any interested person can start his own bus business and run his bus on a profitable route.

Appoint a driver/conductor

If you’re driving your own bus you may need to have just one conductor. But if you want to do any other work, then you have to hire a driver/ conductor to drive the bus. Conductors may need to be appointed.

The appointment of driver and conductor should be done only after deciding the route. Because often drivers and conductors want to know about the route first. In such a situation, if the route is already decided by the entrepreneur, then it will be easier to talk about salary etc. while appointing the driver and conductor.

Provide service and earn

You can also use a ride bus on many other occasions.  For example, buses can also be used to carry marriage processions in marriages, political rallies, religious trips, etc.

Although the bus can also be used as a school bus if needed, school buses are usually painted with yellow paint. Therefore, there may be some difficulty in using passenger buses as school buses.

It is entirely up to the entrepreneur to decide what he wants to send his bus for booking other than the regular route.

Cost of starting a bus business

The cost of starting a bus business will depend on the business model under which the entrepreneur is starting this business.

If he wants to start this business by connecting other people’s buses with his bus service company, then he needs money to set up an office in a good place. For this, he will need to spend about 75-90 thousand rupees in the initial phase.

But even if the entrepreneur wants to start this business by buying his own new bus, the cost will depend on how many buses the entrepreneur wants to start this business with. But if you start this business with just one bus, then you may need to spend Rs.17-35 lakh for this.

Earning from bus service business

It can be very difficult for anyone to give an accurate answer to how much money will be earned from the bus service business. Because which entrepreneur is adopting what methods to earn by bus, these affect his earnings.

For example, many entrepreneurs are making money by using advertisements outside their bus, so most people’s source of income from this business is the fare taken from the passengers.

Apart from this, the owners of the bus also keep sending their buses on trips during various programs according to the needs of the people. The regular earnings from passengers depend on the number of passengers travelling. But according to statistics, a bus can earn a gross income of Rs 8500-9500 a day.

How to make your business successful?

To make your bus business successful, you can follow the following things.

  • If you are hiring a driver/conductor for your business, give priority to experienced and addictive people.
  • Drive the bus on a route that is crowded, and there is a possibility of getting more passengers.
  • Always be ready for bookings such as weddings, weddings or any other event. If possible in the wedding season, book the bus in advance.
  • Do not leave the bus only and only to the driver / conductor, sometimes travel in your own bus to understand this business well.
  • At present, the trend of booking buses online is also increasing among people, to take advantage of this trend, register your bus on MakeMyTrip, Red Bus and other popular online platforms.

By providing top-notch instruction and exceptional customer service, you can establish a reputable driving school that attracts a steady stream of customers and generates a healthy profit.

8. Limousine Services

Transport Business Ideas - Limousine Business

Limousine is a profitable transport idea ; you could provide limo service to celebrities or regular people. Whenever anyone entrusts you to drive them, a clean reputation is important. But in the case of the personal limo service, typically you’ll be driving a group of people who aren’t paying attention to where you’re going or how you’re driving but are enjoying the ride.

In order to start a limousine transport company , the driver needs to be supremely trustworthy, and the vehicle needs to be safe and well-maintained. For this, you can provide all the services yourself, from scheduling to driving. If you want to expand, just add vehicles and drivers and keep expanding your marketing to keep business flowing.

9. Boat Charters

Transport Business Ideas - Charter Boats

Boats are more than a source of transportation or a fishing aid. They are now used as a recreational facility. It is not uncommon to see people take boat trips during the holidays. Some people even hold events onboard boats.

If you have sufficient funds, you can have a boat made for you or buy one that you can start renting to people. For businesses like boat charters , a transportation business license is a must.

10. Air Cargo Business

Transport Business Ideas - Air Cargo Business

The sea is not the only means through which cargo can be brought in; starting a transportation business like air cargo is also profitable as the air can also be utilized in transporting containers. In 2014, airlines transported 51.3 million metric tons of goods, representing more than 35% of global trade by value but less than 1% of world trade by volume.

With the right tools and equipment, even though very costly, you can start an air cargo transport business by helping businessmen transport their goods faster and in a safer way.

redBus business model: transforming the bus ticketing

A few weeks ago, my buddies and I made an impromptu weekend trip to a local hill station. We booked bus tickets for us on redBus without even thinking about it. But was it this simple to book bus tickets two decades ago? No.

People had to deal with many inconveniences while booking bus tickets, whether it was enormous lines in front of ticket offices or long waiting hours on the phone. However, the situation in the Indian bus transport business has radically changed.

redBus, which claims to sell  20 million  tickets per quarter and hold  75%  of the online bus ticketing market, is one such company that has drastically improved the bus ticket purchasing experience by offering ease and convenience to millions of people who travel by bus.

Let’s put a strategic lens on redbus’ business model and understand how this works.

What is redBus, and how did it start?

redBus, based in Bangalore, is the country’s largest online bus ticketing network. redBus, founded in 2006 by Phanindra Sama, Charan Padmaraju, and Sudhakar Pasupunuri, is a subsidiary of MakeMyTrip Limited, India’s largest online travel company.

It all started when one of the founders, Mr. Phanindra Sama, wanted to spend Diwali in his hometown that year. Taking the bus was his only option because he didn’t know his schedule until the last minute. He searched for a bus ticket, but they were all sold out by the time he got to the travel agents.

The thought of offering customers the convenience of reserving a bus ticket through the internet came to him at that point. The goal was to ensure they didn’t have to leave their comfort zone to book a ticket and to assist them in getting a ticket when they needed it the most.

The concept seemed intriguing. After all, why not? People voted the internet as a media they couldn’t live without. With new ideas like Shakti and e-Choupal, PC and internet penetration were expanding in metropolitan regions and rural India. People also became accustomed to booking travel tickets through IRCTC and private airline websites. Why not buses, then?

The bus services were dispersed around the country and were mostly backed by traditional travel agencies. There was an urgent need for transparency in the industry so that customers could use a centralized system to get information on the number of bus routes in operation, rates, availability, seat choices, cancellations, refunds, and feedback options.

The initial step for Sama and his team was to determine the market prospects for their enterprise. They chose Karnataka as their first stop. There hasn’t been any research done to assess this industry. They didn’t have the funds at the time to appoint someone to accomplish it. As a result, they decided to do it themselves.

It wasn’t easy to persuade bus operators accustomed to working with traditional brick-and-mortar travel brokers to change their ways. The premise proved difficult to sell. It took time and money for everything to come together.

The only requirement Redbus had, was to have a small number of people using the website. Once it happened, the user interface was destined to trigger word of mouth. That is precisely what happened. Those who tried it enjoyed it, so they told their friends, and the dominoes began to fall into place.

Growth Journey of RedBus

There have been three major phases of redBus’ business model.

redBus 1.0 was an online bus ticketing start-up that began with a couple of bus operators in Bengaluru. This phase was all about finding the right product-market fit and attracting investors, which was accomplished when Ibibo bought the company.

The 2.0 phase focused on expanding the business to other parts of India and increasing transaction volume. In the past five years, redBus expanded its business model to include markets similar to India.

The bus travel market is poised to grow faster than the GDP growth, and the key contributing factors are higher urbanization (migration to urban areas) for jobs and higher studies and investment in road and highway infrastructure that is improving connectivity, thus reducing time and increasing comfort and speed of travel. ~ redBus CEO Prakash Sangam told Sunday Express.

In 2018, the company was acquired by South African media giant Naspers through its Indian subsidiary, ibiboGroup, for around $135 million (around Rs 790 crore now). Since then, it has developed quickly to establish a virtual monopoly in India’s bus ticketing market.

We realized that if we wanted to scale with a multiplier effect in the bus ticket space, M&A was the way out… We could build something like this on our own, but redBus has a network effect due to its relationship with bus owners and operators, and breaking that is difficult. ~ Ashish Kashyap, chief executive of Ibibo group

RedBus has serviced over  18 million  clients by offering the most options, the best customer service, the lowest pricing, and unrivaled benefits.

Besides India, redBus has a global footprint with operations in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Colombia, and Peru. The company’s net revenue  increased by 56%   to  $14.1 million  in the October-December quarter of 2021, with a gross booking value of $163 million.

RedBus business model explained .

Target Customers : The primary target consumers of redBus are those who want to book a bus ticket without having to go to a physical location. This RedBus concept is designed to attract customers by offering customer service, discounts, and other benefits unavailable at a physical bus station.

Revenue generation:  Bus operators that use this software to manage the seats on their fleet of buses pay an annual fee for the software. Every ticket booked through its site is also subject to a commission from the bus company. The commission is between 10% and 20%, depending on the ticket’s value.

Additional services:  In addition to ticketing, redBus also provides accommodation. It offers great deals on various occasions, as well as some exclusive discounts. The most appealing feature of redBus, however, is that it allows users to choose the most convenient route to their destination and the most convenient seat on the most convenient and finest bus.

Unique app features:  Customers may track their bus, book buses based on their ratings, and provide reviews after the bus trip has ended. These are just a few unique features that make redBus so popular. Women have their section with their seats. They have implemented a variety of steps, such as sterilized buses and required masks, to ensure that their customers are safe while traveling.

Quirky Marketing:  redBus also gets a lot of notice for its unique marketing initiatives. Allu Arjun, the actor, was recently announced as the company’s official brand ambassador. Arjun will be in charge of the company’s extensive campaigns, assisting it in reaching out to his many followers around the country.

Latest at redBus

RedBus recently announced the debut of the redRail app, a dedicated platform for booking railway tickets, to expand its influence in the travel sector.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by redBus (@redbusindia)

Until today, redRail, which was launched in November, was a part of the redBus app. Both services have a complementary relationship – many redRail customers would seek bus services after arriving at their destination, as buses provide last-mile connectivity with a higher penetration than railways.

Our aspiration is to be the biggest partner for  IRCTC  (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation). In the next two years, we want to be their number one ticket-booking partner. Prakash Sangam, chief executive officer of redBus

From an estimated  US$ 75 billion in FY20 , India’s travel market is expected to grow to  US$ 125 billion by FY27 . In FY20, India’s tourism sector employed  39 million  people, accounting for  8.0 percent  of the country’s overall workforce. It is estimated to employ almost  53 million people by 2029 .

Since its inception in 2006, RedBus has been an enormous success, and with the booming tourism economy, it will only get bigger. redBus provides numerous bus services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to satisfy the traveler’s demands.

Its business model is straightforward and effective, but most significantly, redBus is well-known and well-liked by the general public.

Types of Buses in India

You have various options for riding Indian buses, each with its own price, comforts, and challenges.

Government-Run Buses

CND-Bus-Trip-Government

Ordinary Buses

These are the most basic type, with wooden or plastic seats and no frills. They stop frequently and are a great way to soak in the local flavor. But brace yourself – it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

  • Price Range : ₹50 – ₹300 depending on the distance.
  • Fun Fact : Often, you’ll see local vendors hop on these buses at stops, selling snacks and beverages. Do try the masala chai if you get a chance!

Pro Tip : These buses tend to be crowded, so always monitor your belongings.

Deluxe Buses

A step up from the ordinary buses, these have cushioned seats and make fewer stops. They are a tad more expensive but offer a more comfortable journey.

  • Price Range : ₹150 – ₹600 .

I met many locals on my journey to Bangalore from Tamil Nadu as we zipped through the hills. The price was about $3, and the trip was more than 4 hours, which is one example of how reasonable these prices are.

Private Operators

CND-Bus-Trip-Private

Semi-Sleeper Buses

These have reclining seats, perfect for long journeys. You might also get a water bottle and blanket with some operators.

  • Price Range : ₹400 – ₹1200 .

Pro Tip : Always check reviews before booking with a private operator. Not all are created equal.

Sleeper Buses

Ideal for overnight journeys, these buses have berths (similar to train compartments) where you can lie down and sleep. Some even have AC!

  • Price Range : ₹600 – ₹2000 .
  •   Fun Fact : The curtains on these bus berths make for an oddly cozy sleep environment. On my way to Kerala, the rhythmic lull of the bus, paired with the rain outside, gave me one of the best sleeps ever!

Luxury/Volvo Buses

These are top-of-the-line buses, often with amenities like AC, WiFi, and food service. They’re a bit pricier but are the epitome of comfort in India’s bus travel.

  • Price Range : ₹800 – ₹3000 .

Pro Tip : Some routes have scenic beauty, especially in the Himalayan regions. Book a daytime Volvo bus, get a window seat, and thank me later.

Navigating India by bus is truly an adventure in itself. Not only do you save money, but the stories and experiences you collect along the way are priceless. Whether it’s a local sharing their lunch with you or a surprise detour through a scenic village, buses in India can turn the journey into a destination. Safe travels!

How To Book Tickets

Navigating India’s vast roadways is an adventure in itself. But before we embark on those winding roads filled with stories at every turn, let’s get down to brass tacks: booking those tickets. After exploring this country for four years, here’s the lowdown on booking bus tickets, whether you’re going digital or old-school.

Online Booking Platforms

bus business plan in india

  • Extensive network covering almost every corner of India.
  • User-friendly interface with live bus tracking.
  • Offers reviews and ratings from fellow travelers.
  • They charge a service fee.
  • Some routes might have limited bus options.

Pro Tip : Look out for RedBus discount coupons and cashback offers. They’re a regular feature, especially during festive seasons!

bus business plan in india

  • Not just buses; you can book hotels, flights, and trains, making it a one-stop shop for travel.
  • Reliable customer service.
  • Periodic offers and loyalty programs.
  • Slightly higher service fees compared to other platforms.
  • The interface can be overwhelming for first-time users.

Pro Tip: If your international card gets rejected, try another one. My Chime bank card works best, while other perfectly good international cards are not accepted.

Others (like MakeMyTrip, Yatra, Goibibo)

  • Competitive prices and offers.
  • Comprehensive coverage of routes.
  • Some lesser-known platforms may not be as reliable.
  • Refund policies can vary.

Booking Tickets Offline

bus business plan in india

While the digital age has taken over, there’s something to be said about the charm of booking tickets the traditional way.

– Where to Book : Head to the bus station or authorized travel agents. Major cities have dedicated bus terminals with multiple counters based on routes.

– Ask Around At the Bus Stop: The only way to find the right bus is to ask around. Go for the drivers, who often wear brown official-looking shirts for the best info. And ask multiple drivers to be sure you’re in the right place.

Pro Tip : If you’re wary of language barriers, have your destination written down in the local language. This can be a game-changer!

Tips for Securing the Best Seats

1. Book in Advance : Especially if traveling during peak season or on popular routes.

2. Window or Aisle? If you’re in it for the views, opt for a window seat. If you like a little more legroom and the freedom to move, the aisle’s your friend.

3. Check Seat Layouts : Some online platforms show bus seat layouts. If you’re traveling solo, a single seat might be more comfortable.

4. Safety First : For overnight journeys, many female travelers prefer seats closer to the front or near other groups of women. Trust your instincts.

5. Ask for AC/Luxury Buses: The prices aren’t much higher, and you may enjoy yourself more, especially as a new traveler.

Understanding Pricing and Peak Travel Times

– Pricing Fluctuations : Just like airfares, bus ticket prices can vary based on demand. Weekends, holidays, and festival seasons usually see a spike.

– Off-Peak Discounts : Traveling on weekdays or during non-festival times can get you better deals.

– Fun Fact : Diwali, Eid, and Christmas are among the busiest travel times in India. If you’re traveling during these periods, book way in advance!

Booking a bus ticket in India is more than just a transaction; it’s the beginning of a story. Each route has its charm, every co-passenger a tale to tell. So, as you click that ‘book now’ button or hand over cash at the counter, remember – the journey is just beginning. Safe travels!

Safety Tips for Indian Buses

Traveling by bus in India, with its myriad of landscapes, colors, and cultures flashing by the window, can be both mesmerizing and, at times, overwhelming, especially for foreign travelers. Being on the road for four years and having traversed popular and obscure routes, safety has always been my top priority.

Here’s a distilled version of my experiences and wisdom for anyone seeking a safe and pleasant bus journey in India. Be sure to look for travel advisories before departing.

Safe Travel for Solo Female Travelers

My girlfriend had traveled around India before we met, and she gave me some good points about staying safe.

1. Seat Selection : Opt for front seats or those close to other women or families.

2. Dress Conservatively : Adapting to local norms can be respectful and make you less of a target. A scarf or shawl can be handy.

3. Be Discreet : Avoid drawing unnecessary attention. For instance, be cautious when consuming alcohol or getting too friendly with strangers.

4. Share Your Itinerary : Always let someone know about your travel plans, even if it’s the hotel staff.

Pro Tip : If you’re feeling uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to voice your concerns. Indians are generally protective and will often come to your aid.

Keeping Your Belongings Secure

1. Less is More : Only carry essentials on the bus. Most buses have limited storage space.

2. Lock It Up : Use a small padlock for your backpack or luggage.

3. Personal Belongings : Always keep essential items like passports, money, and phones close to you, preferably in a hidden money belt.

4. Stay Alert During Stops : Quick tea or meal breaks are common, so always ensure you have an eye on your belongings.

Scams to Be Aware of and How to Avoid Them

1. Overpriced Tickets : Always check the standard prices online or ask locals.

2. False Tour Operators : Ensure you’re booking with legitimate operators, especially at bus stations.

3. Unexpected “Tolls” : You might be asked for extra money for reasons like tolls or luggage. Confirm with other passengers before paying.

Pro Tip for Foreign Travelers : Familiarize yourself with local currency to avoid being short-changed. Also, consider use Google Translate or your phone to show pictures of what you’re looking for.

Trusted Bus Companies and Operators to Consider

1. Government Bus Services : Almost every state has its own government-run bus service, such as KSRTC for Karnataka and TNSTC for Tamil Nadu. These are generally reliable and safe.

2. Private Operators : Companies like Neeta Tours, VRL, and KPN have built good reputations over the years.

3. Use Online Reviews : Platforms like RedBus and EaseMyTrip have user reviews. Do a quick scan to gauge the credibility of the operator.

On my way from the Chennai airport to Tiruvannamalai, I took a TNSTC bus. Not only was it punctual and comfortable, I saved $40 versus a taxi.

Like many things, while traveling, safety often hinges on a mix of common sense, local knowledge, and trust in humanity. With these tips in your travel arsenal, you’ll explore India safely and with confidence and peace of mind.

How To Pack for Indian Bus Trips

CND-packing-india

Unlike flights, where you have a clear-cut luggage policy, or trains, where you might have the luxury of an entire berth, buses demand a blend of minimalism and preparedness. Let’s break down the essentials that should find a spot in your backpack.

What to Bring for Overnight Bus Journeys

1. Comfortable Clothing : Think loose cotton pants and a light T-shirt. Layers are your friend – buses can vary from being too cold due to air conditioning to too warm. You can also pick up cheap warm clothing at the bus station.

2. Travel Pillow & Blanket : While many AC sleeper buses provide these, it’s always good to have a small inflatable pillow and a light shawl or blanket for comfort.

3. Earplugs & Eye Mask : For those who find it challenging to sleep amid noise or light.

4. Personal Entertainment : Download your favorite podcasts, music, or e-books. But remember, the Indian countryside itself can be quite the movie.

5. Powerbank : Not all buses have charging points. Keep your devices juiced up.

6. Toiletries : A mini toothbrush, toothpaste, and face wash can be rejuvenating after an overnight trip.

Navigating Food and Drink on Indian Buses

1. Pack Light Snacks : Nuts, biscuits, or granola bars can be lifesavers, especially if you aren’t keen on trying roadside snacks.

2. Water : Always carry a refillable water bottle. While buses do stop for breaks, having water at arm’s reach is essential.

3. Avoid Overeating : Stick to lighter meals before and during the journey. Local dhabas (roadside eateries) serve delicious food, but if you’re not used to Indian cuisine, opt for less spicy dishes.

After taking a bus from the Ramoji Film Studios in Hyderabad, my sleeper bus stopped at a dhaba, and I had the most delectable samosas. They cost me just ₹10 and remain one of my most memorable meals in India. However, remember, your stomach might not be as adventurous initially!

Essential Items Every Traveler Should Have

1. Hand Sanitizer & Wet Wipes : Given that you’ll be on the move, these can be indispensable for quick refreshment.

2. Toilet Paper or Tissues : Not all rest stops will have these, especially if the bus stops beside highways.

3. Basic Medication : Think painkillers, motion sickness pills, and any personal medication. It’s good to have a mini first-aid kit with band-aids and antiseptic cream.

4. Local Currency in Small Denominations : For paying at local shops or tips. Many places might not accept cards.

5. Important Documents : A photocopy of your passport, visa, and any ID, stored separately from the originals.

The rhythm of road travel in India differs from many places worldwide. As your bus maneuvers through serpentine ghats, meanders through vast plains, or halts at a bustling local market, having these essentials will ensure the journey is as memorable as the destination.

How To Survive Indian Bus Stations

CND-Bus Trip Station

If Indian roads are the veins of this vast country, bus stations are the beating hearts. The hustle and bustle, the cacophony of vendors and announcers, and the sheer energy can be both exhilarating and intimidating.

Especially for someone new to the scene, it can feel like stepping into a whirlwind. But fear not, for as chaotic as they seem, there’s an underlying rhythm to these places, and with these tips, you’ll be navigating them like a pro in no time.

Navigating Chaotic Bus Stations in India

1. Arrive Early : Give yourself ample time to figure things out. Bus stations can be huge, with multiple gates and platforms.

2. Station Layouts : Look for station maps or information counters. Larger bus stations, especially in metropolitan cities, often have them.

3. Stay Calm : It’s easy to feel overwhelmed but remember, most people are there to help. A calm demeanor goes a long way.

4. Ask Multiple People: I go to bus drivers and ask around. They usually know which buses go where, and stand out since they wear uniforms. Do ask multiple drivers though to verify the info you’re getting.

On my trip to Bangalore, I just showed up at the local bus station and asked around until I found the next bus. When I asked about AC buses, the drivers had a good laugh. But the non-AC state-run bus was a decent trip and I met some good people.

How to Find Your Bus and Boarding Process

1. Check Your Ticket : It usually has details like the platform number, bus number, or departure time.

2. Ask Around : Don’t hesitate. Locals or bus station staff can be incredibly helpful. Sometimes, there are also loudspeaker announcements.

3. Bus Company’s Help Desk : Larger operators often have dedicated counters or help desks. Approach them for clarity.

4. Queue Up : Once you locate your bus, there might be a queue, especially during peak hours. It’s advisable to join it rather than waiting to one side.

Interacting with Locals and Co-passengers

1. Open Mind, Respectful Approach : Embrace the diversity. You’ll meet people from various backgrounds. A smile is a universal language, so start with that.

2. Learn Basic Phrases : Knowing simple greetings in the local language can make interactions smoother. Hindi phrases like “Namaste” (Hello) or “Dhanyawaad” (Thank you) are generally well-received.

3. Personal Space : While Indians are generally warm and might strike up conversations, always respect personal boundaries and trust your instincts.

Is It Okay to Eat the Food at Indian Bus Stations?

1. Street Food Delights : Bus stations can be a foodie’s paradise with local delicacies at every corner. From steaming idlis in the south to spicy samosas in the north, there’s a lot to tempt your palate.

2. Choose Wisely : Opt for stalls that have a lot of customers, as this usually indicates fresher produce.

3. Watch and Decide : If you see the food being cooked fresh and hot in front of you, it’s generally safer.

4. Bottled Water : Always opt for sealed bottled water over tap water.

While Indian bus stations can throw a sensory overload at you, with a mix of patience, preparedness, and a dash of adventure, they can be navigated seamlessly. And who knows, amidst the seeming chaos, you might just find some of your most cherished travel memories.

How To Enjoy Indian Bus Rides

CND-Bus-Trip-Goa-

Bouncing along an Indian highway, with the sights and sounds of the country unfolding outside your window, can be one of the most authentic ways to experience India. But to truly enjoy this, one must understand and imbibe a few cultural, practical, and comfort-based norms.

Here’s my guide to making the most of your Indian bus adventure.

Etiquette and Cultural Norms to be Aware of

1. Greet with a Smile : A simple nod or a “Namaste” can go a long way in breaking the ice with your fellow passengers.

2. Mind Your Volume : Whether you’re listening to music, watching a video, or conversing, ensure you’re not disturbing others.

3. Offering Your Seat : If the bus is full, it’s customary to offer your seat to elders, pregnant women, or those with young children.

4. Avoid Public Displays of Affection : India is conservative in this aspect. Respect local sentiments by being discreet.

How to Handle Unexpected Stops and Breakdowns

1. Stay Calm : Breakdowns or unexpected halts can be common, especially on longer journeys. Take it in stride and use the time to stretch or enjoy the surroundings.

2. Stay with the Group : If you’re traveling in remote areas, remaining close to the bus or fellow passengers is safer during unplanned stops.

3. Carry Snacks and Water : Handy for times when the stop isn’t near any shops or eateries.

4. Inform Someone : If you sense a long delay, inform someone at your destination about the delay.

Pro Tip: Carry a high-quality power bank to keep the electricity flowing to your phone and devices. Having a working phone is essential to staying safe on your bus trip.

Tips for a Comfortable Journey

1. Essential Gear : Earplugs for noisy rides, a neck pillow for support, and an eye mask to block out unwanted light.

2. Stay Hydrated, But Not Too Much : Drink enough water to stay hydrated but avoid drinking too much to minimize frequent bathroom stops.

3. Layer Up : Temperatures can vary, so dress in layers to easily adjust to the changing environment.

Tips for Each Type of Bus

1. State Buses :

   * Prepare for the Basics : These are no-frills buses. Carry essentials like water and snacks as they may not have frequent stops.

   * Cash is King : Many state buses still operate on cash. Keep smaller denominations handy.

2. Local Buses :

   * Exact Change : The ticket-taking man might not have change, and you don’t want to annoy him since he’ll help you find the right stop.

   * Be Ready for a Quick Ride : Local buses stop frequently and might not halt for long. Stay alert.

3. Sleeper Buses :

   * Bedding : While many provide blankets and pillows, it’s good to have a light shawl or blanket of your own.

   * Secure Your Belongings : Use a small lock for your luggage for added security.

4. Semi-Sleeper Buses :

   * Leg Space : Unlike sleeper buses, you won’t be able to fully stretch. Wear comfortable clothing and consider taking short walks during stops.

   * Reclining Seats : Be courteous. Before reclining your seat, ensure it doesn’t inconvenience the person behind you.

Indian bus journeys, like the country itself, can be a beautiful paradox: chaotic yet orderly, tiring yet exhilarating. With these tips, you can immerse yourself in the experience while ensuring your journey is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Money-Saving Tips for Indian Bus Trips

I saved a bunch of money taking Goa’s local buses after arriving by train.

But as exciting as bus travel in India can be, budget constraints are real for many travelers. Yet fear not! With some planning and a dash of local know-how, you can stretch your rupees further without compromising on the experience.

Here’s my treasure trove of money-saving tips accumulated from crisscrossing India on a budget.

Off-Peak vs. Peak Travel: When to Book and Travel

1. Avoid Festive Rush : During major festivals like Diwali, Durga Puja, or Eid, bus fares skyrocket due to high demand. Plan your journeys outside of these times.

2. Mid-Week Savings : Tuesdays and Wednesdays often see lower bookings compared to weekends, making them ideal for snagging a good deal.

3. Night Travel : Overnight buses might be cheaper than day buses, and you save on a night’s accommodation too!

Discounts and Loyalty Programs to Consider

1. Booking Apps : Apps like RedBus, MakeMyTrip, and Paytm often have discounts or cashback offers for first-time users.

2. Loyalty Benefits : Frequent travelers can earn points or get discounts on future journeys through loyalty programs on certain booking platforms.

3. Student Discounts : Some state-run bus services offer discounts for students. Always carry a valid student ID if you’re eligible.

Pro Tip: RedBus has a generous refund policy, which I’ve often used as my plans changed.

Using Local Knowledge and Bargaining

1. Ask Around : Ask locals about standard fare ranges before booking online. They can give you a benchmark for negotiation or validation.

2. Ticket Booths : While online booking is convenient, direct booking at bus stations can sometimes be cheaper. Bargaining is more prevalent for non-AC and local buses.

3. Group Discounts : If you’re traveling in a group, you can often negotiate a lower fare per person, especially with private operators.

Websites with the Best Refund Policies

1. RedBus : Known for its straightforward refund policy, especially if you cancel well in advance.

2. MakeMyTrip : They have a ‘Zero Cancellation’ feature on some routes where you can cancel and get almost your full amount back.

3. Booking Directly : Sometimes, booking directly through the bus company’s website can offer more lenient refund terms than third-party platforms.

4. Always Check the Fine Print : Before booking, always read the cancellation and refund policy. It can vary widely between providers.

Exploring Off-Beat Destinations on Indian Bus Trips

bus business plan in india

Buses in India aren’t just a means of transport; they’re a ticket to hidden gems that lie off the well-trodden tourist trails. The real charm of India often rests in its lesser-known locales, and bus travel, given its extensive network, is your key to unlocking these treasures.

Leveraging Bus Travel to Discover Lesser-Known Places

1. Extended Stops : If you’re on a long journey, consider breaking it up. Stay a night or two in smaller towns along the route. These unexpected halts often lead to the most cherished memories.

2. Talk to Locals : On board a bus, strike up a conversation with locals. They’re your best guides to hidden gems around their homes.

3. Opt for Regional Transport : State-run buses usually connect more remote destinations than private luxury buses. They might be less plush, but the vistas they lead to more than make up for it.

Best Destinations to Reach by Bus

1. Manali : This beautiful hill station in Himachal Pradesh is well connected by bus from Shimla, Leh, Delhi, and Chandigarh. The winding road offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Don’t miss the quaint cafes and colonial architecture.

2. Leh in Ladakh : While the road trip from Manali to Leh is legendary among bikers, the bus journey is equally mesmerizing. It’s a long, challenging ride, but the landscapes of barren mountains, blue lakes, and pristine monasteries make it worth every bump.

3. Jammu and Kashmir : While Srinagar is a well-known destination, countless lesser-known locales in this region are best accessed by bus. Pahalgam, Pulwama, and Gulmarg are just a few gems waiting to be discovered.

4. Gokarna, Karnataka : If Goa feels too crowded, hop on a bus to Gokarna. Its serene beaches and laid-back vibe make it the perfect spot to unwind. The overnight bus journey from Bangalore offers a comfortable means to get there.

5. Wayanad, Kerala : Reachable by bus from Bengaluru or Kochi, this verdant paradise is home to thick rainforests, aromatic spice plantations, and the beautiful Banasura Sagar Dam.

6. Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh : Often dubbed as ‘Mini Switzerland’, I chanced upon this place on a bus journey from Dalhousie. The vast meadows, dense forests, and a serene lake in the middle, made it feel like a dream.

7. Majuli, Assam : The world’s largest river island is best reached by taking a bus to Jorhat and then a ferry. During my visit, the warm-hearted locals introduced me to the island’s rich cultural heritage and unique satras (monastic centers).

8. Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu : On the eastern tip of India, a bus journey led me to this ghost town, which offers hauntingly beautiful views of the Bay of Bengal meeting the Indian Ocean.

Buses, with their wide reach and the vibrant microcosm of India they encapsulate, are your best bet at discovering a side of India many miss out on. Embrace the detours, relish the unexpected, and let every mile introduce you to a new story. Safe and enlightening travels!

Dealing with Discomfort and Challenges on Indian Bus Trips

bus business plan in india

Ah, the Indian bus adventure! A kaleidoscope of experiences – from breathtaking landscapes to the symphony of horns. But it’s not all rose-tinted; there are discomforts and challenges along the way.

Here’s a guide on navigating these hurdles, ensuring you’re poised to extract the best from your journey.

Health and Hygiene on the Road

1. Stay Hydrated but Mindful : Drink water to stay hydrated but in moderation to avoid frequent bathroom breaks, especially since clean public toilets can be sparse.

2. Hand Sanitizer is Your Best Friend : With the varying hygiene levels at rest stops, always carry and frequently use hand sanitizer.

3. Pack a Hygiene Kit : Wet wipes, tissues, and a small towel can be lifesavers on the road.

4. Avoid Street Food at Bus Stops : While they might look tempting, opting for packaged snacks or fruits is best. If you’re feeling adventurous, choose hot, freshly cooked items.

Handling Motion Sickness

1. Choose the Right Seat : Front seats or those above the wheels often experience less turbulence.

2. Look at Distant Objects : Focusing on the horizon or distant scenery can help alleviate symptoms.

3. Avoid Reading : Reading amplifies motion sickness for many.

4. Ginger to the Rescue : Ginger candies or ginger tea can naturally help counter nausea.

5. Stay Ventilated : Ensure a continuous supply of fresh air by adjusting the AC vents or cracking open a window slightly.

Navigating Language Barriers

1. Learn Basic Local Phrases : A few words like ‘thank you’ (‘dhanyavad’ in Hindi or ‘nandri’ in Tamil), ‘yes,’ ‘no,’ and numbers can be invaluable.

2. Use Translation Apps : Apps like Google Translate can assist in basic communication. Download the local language offline pack in advance.

3. Gestures and Body Language : While words might fail, universally understood gestures like nodding, shaking your head, or pointing can help in getting your message across.

4. Connect with Younger Folks : English is taught in schools across India, so younger individuals are more likely to understand or speak basic English.

5. Show, Don’t Tell : If you’re trying to reach a destination, showing a picture or a map can sometimes be more effective than pronouncing a place name.

Final Thoughts

The benefits of Indian bus travel are myriad – from affordability to unparalleled access to off-the-beaten-path destinations. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in the bustling energy of local state buses or seek the relative luxury of sleeper coaches, there’s a bus for every traveler and every pocket. And with platforms like RedBus and MakeMyTrip, securing a ticket has never been easier.

Yet, like any adventure, it comes with its set of challenges. Staying vigilant about safety, especially for solo female travelers, is paramount. A little caution goes a long way, from safeguarding your belongings to being aware of potential scams.

Price-conscious travelers have many options, with websites offering great deals and value-for-money ticket prices. However, sometimes the best deals come from a friendly chat with a local or a visit to the bus station itself.

But more than the practicalities, the real allure of Indian bus travel is the stories that unfold, the connections you make, and the landscapes that change with every turn. It’s about the chai stall conversations during pit stops, the lullabies sung by mothers to their children, and the collective gasp of wonder when the bus rounds a corner revealing a mesmerizing sunset.

There are good destinations, from Jammu and Kashmir’s snow-clad beauty to Gokarna’s coastal charm. Yet, sometimes the magic lies in those unplanned detours, the unexpected towns, and the spontaneous friendships.

In conclusion, one must experience its roads, rhythm, and routes to understand India truly.

Starting Minibus Transport Business Plan (PDF)

Minibus Public Transport Business Plan

Minibuses play a very important role in the public transport industry. Everyday millions of people use minibuses as transport to get to their destinations. Minibus public transport business is a very lucrative venture, which is highly rewarding. This article will outline how to start the minibus public transport business, and the minibus business plan – PDF, Word and Excel.

Minibus public transportation is a lucrative business, providing income for millions of people, but there are some essential decisions you need to make before you venture into the business. You have to make a decision on how many minibuses you will start with, the type of minibuses, the routes you will be operating in, and your target market. These choices will be affected by the amount of capital you have, and the opportunities available in the market.  If you do not have a lot of capital, you can always start small and grow your minibus public transport business overtime.

Size is not everything in the minibus public transport industry – you do not need a large fleet in order to start up the minibus business. There are stories of people who have started a successful public transport business with nothing more than a single minibus. At the same time, the public transport business industry is diverse and rich enough to accommodate very large companies with large fleets of minibuses. Whatever option you choose; there are some critical issues that you must take into consideration as you come up with your minibus business plan.

Market Research

Formidable competition to contend with.

In many parts of the world there are affordable and reliable public transportation systems. This can be in the form of trains, and buses, amongst others; typically run by government. This is serious competition for a minibus transport business. No wonder you need to conduct market research. You have to figure out your competition i.e. government-run and private public transportation providers.

Seeking To Find A Disruptor Element

You want to know the routes they cover, their fare structures, and the type of transportation they use. People tend to be loyal to certain public transporters. Your market research is to find gaps and loopholes you can leverage on to be more appealing. After all, minibuses are not typical in many parts of the world. Thus you really have to dig deep to understand the public transport dynamics of your target market. That brings to the fore the target market.

Figuring Which Target Market Is Ideal

You want to figure which markets are worth targeting and how. It could be plying a particular route daily. It might be for companies, schools, and the like i.e. daily transportation of staff or students. You could find underserved routes and cater for them. Another niche is hiring out your minibus for intracity or intercity trips. Being able to know how exactly you must package your value proposition requires in-depth market research. Minibuses are atypical so you cannot just assume, be empirical!

Even though your business will be transporting people on the road; you still need some sort of premises for your minibus transport business. You can lease an office in the beginning of your business and then purchase your own later on. The office will have to be furnished and you have to hire employees to manage the office work. The work of the office is vital to the rest of the business. You should not treat it like a separate entity which does not need to conform to the highest standards of customer care. Instead try to ensure that you have a seamless service provision that is uniformly impressive and excellent. You also need secure premises where your minibuses will be parked when not on the road. The minibus business plan should cater for funds to purchase or lease premises.

Vehicles and Equipment

You need to purchase minibus vehicles in order to start the public transport business. The minibus vehicles can be imported from other countries where they are cheap or you can buy them locally from your country. The number and type of minibuses required will depend on the amount of capital which you have and your target market. You will also have to make a decision on whether to buy brand new minibus vehicles or second hand vehicles. When starting the business with limited capital, it maybe better to purchase used minibus vehicles. The advantage of having new minibus vehicles is that you will have lower maintenance costs and better reliability on the road.

There are several factors to take into consideration when purchasing the minibus vehicles. Some of the factors include: purchase price, fuel consumption, transmission mode (automatic vs manual), passenger capacity, model, new minibus vs used minibus. If you have limited capital, you can always start your minibus public transport business with just one vehicle. Minibus public transportation business is very profitable and if you reinvest your profits, you will be able to purchase more minibuses.

Equipment required for the minibus business include garage equipment and repair tools. The minibus drivers should always travel with basic repair tools such that if they encounter minor problems along the way, they can always fix the vehicles. The minibus business plan should include the costs of purchasing the vehicles and equipment.

Minibus Servicing And Repairs

Aim is to be always reliable and efficient.

The success of being a public transportation provider heavily depends on your efficiency and reliability. People will prefer your minibuses if they operate efficiently. Breakdowns or poor vehicle performance will put off customers. After all, people already have so many other options they can turn to. That is why you cannot afford to have minibuses that are unreliable. You have to regularly service your minibus as prescribed.

Stick To A Regular Servicing Schedule

The servicing schedule might differ depending on the type of minibus. At times it can be premised on certain mileage milestones. A general rule is that services should not be spaced by more than 10 weeks. Thus in a year, your minibus must be serviced at least 5 times. Sticking to this servicing regiment keeps the minibus operating efficiently. It helps you detect early any issues requiring attention. The need for repairs is significantly reduced or even eliminated just by regular servicing.

Inevitability Of Repairs And The Need For Professional Hands

A minibus has several moving parts – electrical, electronic, mechanical, and so on. Faults can happen which necessitate repairs. When that happens it is prudent to involve qualified and skilled professionals. Maybe you do it in-house or you engage a repairs provider. Whichever the case is, you must ensure that repairs are done professionally; no shortcuts. Improperly done repairs lead to more complications and can shorten the lifespan of the minibus. Plus your minibus transport business will be severely compromised.

Minibus Public Transport Business Insurance and Licences

One of the critical requirements that can potentially have catastrophic consequences for the public as well as the business is insurance. It is advisable to have a comprehensive insurance plan for all the minibus vehicles. The costs of comprehensive insurance are more than offset by the potential losses if you were to have an accident. As a business; the minibus business may be liable for very significant punitive damages particularly if there is a loss of life. Without adequate insurance, the minibus public transport business could be bankrupted by compensation claims.

The minibus public transport industry is regulated and the specific licences depends with the country. First of all, your drivers must be properly licensed with up to date records including health checks and driver licences.  Your local council will have a list of regulatory requirements which must be diligently followed lest you lose your license to operate the minibus business. The minibus public transportation business plan should include costs for the insurance and licenses.

bus business plan in india

Staff and Management

Operations staff is a necessity for the minibus public transport business. Operations staff are responsible for handling the operations of the public transport business. They include drivers, conductors, logistics personnel, mechanics and operations manager. You will need a minibus driver as the minimum starting employee for the minibus transport business.

Finance and accounting employees are also required. For a small minibus business, the duty can be handled by the owner of the business or a part time accountant. However as the minibus public transport business grows, there will be need for full time employees who will be responsible for the finance and accounting needs of the business. Their duties will include usual day to day transaction accounting for business, managing the cash flow of the minibus public transport business, and always ensuring the enough funds are available for the day to day needs of the minibus business.

Capital for Starting Minibus Public Transport Business

The amount of capital required for starting the minibus public transport business depends on the size of the business. It all depends on what you want to achieve and the resources that you have. When starting a minibus business, most of the capital goes to acquiring the minibus vehicles. You can get a loan from the bank, or funding from investors, to use as capital to start your minibus public transport business. If you plan to raise capital from investors and a loan from the bank, you need a good minibus public transport business plan. If you don’t have access to investors and bank loan, you can use your personal savings and start small, and grow your minibus business overtime. Minibus transport business is very profitable, so if you reinvest the profits you get, you can grow over time. Even if you are not planning to get a loan, you should still get a minibus project plan to guide you in starting and operating the business. It is essential for you to have a minibus transport business plan before you venture into the minibus business, so that you know all the costs involved and you make an informed decision.

Marketing Plan

Build a solid online presence via a business website and social media accounts. Have a framework that even allows people to book online, if applicable. While you are at it, join strategic online marketplaces or business listing platforms.

Effective Branding

Branding your minibus is a sure way of grabbing people’s attention. Engage branding companies and have it colourfully and informatively branded. Find a strategic location for an office and brand it well too. Incorporate the use of banners and posters. Put signage at strategic locations so that brand awareness is spread out.

Ad Placements

You can do ad placements through strategic platforms such as radio, print media, podcasts, online content, and the like. Consider email marketing by sending promotional material about your minibus transport business to prospects.

Market for the Minibus Transport Business

The market for minibus transport is very huge. Minibuses are an affordable means of transport which are used by many people. Minibuses are used as a form of transport for both short distance routes and long distance routes. Short distance routes include routes within the same city. On the other hand long distance routes maybe from one city to the other or cross boarder routes. Minibuses can also be used for private hire by companies, organisations, schools and individuals.

Expansion Strategies

The minibus transport business is scalable through more trips or getting more minibuses. Expansion should be informed by your minibus transport business’ performance. You can notice that you are underserving the market i.e. demand is higher. There could be more untapped markets or routes. These are both opportunities for expansion. The best way to expand is by growing your fleet. Do not rush this though; roots down first, even if it is just one minibus. It is best to wait till your revenues are now substantial and consistently sustained. This will make it easier to purchase new minibuses either directly or by use of loans.

Keys To Profitability

Niche marketing.

In marketing your minibus transport business you must use niche marketing. Niche marketing refers to concerted marketing efforts specifically channelled towards a clearly-defined segment of prospects. Remember the transport industry is immensely broad. To maximize on marketing resources, time, and energy you need to speak to the right prospects. Niche marketing considers metrics such as price, income levels, quality, interests, and geographical dynamics, amongst others.

Invest In Your Staff To Differentiate You Minibus Business

One of the biggest turnoffs for customers is poor treatment from staff. This also extends to staff not being time-conscious and driving recklessly. Invest in regular staff training or up-skilling. Satisfactorily remunerate your staff so that they do their duties happily and professionally. This is pivotal in building customer loyalty and in turn, referrals. You can further cement this by offering competitive prices.

Public transportation is a lucrative but competitive market space. Downtime should be avoided by all means if your minibus transport business is to thrive. The long term goal should be to grow your fleet. If you have just one minibus, you will hit the ceiling at some point.

Growth in electric car sales remains robust as major markets progress and emerging economies ramp up.

Electric car sales keep rising and could reach around 17 million in 2024, accounting for more than one in five cars sold worldwide. Electric cars continue to make progress towards becoming a mass-market product in a larger number of countries. Tight margins, volatile battery metal prices, high inflation, and the phase-out of purchase incentives in some countries have sparked concerns about the industry’s pace of growth, but global sales data remain strong. In the first quarter of 2024, electric car sales grew by around 25% compared with the first quarter of 2023, similar to the year-on-year growth seen in the same period in 2022. In 2024, the market share of electric cars could reach up to 45% in China, 25% in Europe and over 11% in the United States, underpinned by competition among manufacturers, falling battery and car prices, and ongoing policy support.

Quarterly electric car sales by region, 2021-2024

Growth expectations for 2024 build on a record year: in 2023, global sales of electric cars neared 14 million, reaching 18% of all cars sold. This is up from 14% in 2022. Electric car sales in 2023 were 3.5 million higher than in 2022, a 35% year-on-year increase. This indicates robust growth even as many major markets enter a new phase, with uptake shifting from early adopters to the mass market. Over 250 000 electric cars were sold every week last year, more than the number sold in a year just a decade ago. Chinese carmakers produced more than half of all electric cars sold worldwide in 2023, despite accounting for just 10% of global sales of cars with internal combustion engines.

The pace at which electric car sales pick up in emerging and developing economies outside China will determine their global success. The vast majority of electric car sales in 2023 were in China (60%), Europe (25%) and the United States (10%). By comparison, these regions accounted for around 65% of total car sales worldwide, showing that sales of electric models remain more geographically concentrated than those of conventional ones. While electric car sales in emerging economies have been lagging those in the three big markets, growth picked up in 2023 in countries such as Viet Nam (around 15% of all cars sold) and Thailand (10%). In emerging economies with large car markets, shares are still relatively low, but several factors point to further growth. Policy measures such as purchase subsidies and incentives for electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing are playing a key role. In India (where electric cars have a 2% market share), the Production Linked Incentives (PLI) Scheme is supporting domestic manufacturing. In Brazil (3% share), Indonesia, Malaysia (2% share each), and Thailand, cheaper models, mainly from Chinese brands, are underpinning uptake. In Mexico, EV supply chains are rapidly developing, stimulated by access to subsidies from the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

Policy support is boosting industry investment, building confidence that rapid electrification will continue

Every other car sold globally in 2035 is set to be electric based on today’s energy, climate and industrial policy settings , as reflected in the IEA’s Stated Policies Scenario. This has significant impacts on the car fleet. As soon as 2030, almost one in three cars on the roads in China is electric in this scenario, and almost one in five in both the United States and European Union. The rapid uptake of EVs of all types – cars, vans, trucks, buses and two/three-wheelers – avoids 6 million barrels per day (mb/d) of oil demand in the Stated Policies Scenario in 2030, and over 10 mb/d in 2035. This is equivalent to the amount of oil used for road transport in the United States today. Recent policy developments continue to reinforce expectations for swift electrification, such as new emissions standards adopted in Canada, the European Union and the United States over the past year. Industrial incentives – such as those in the US IRA, the EU Net Zero Industry Act, China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, and India’s PLI scheme – also encourage adding value and creating jobs across EV supply chains in those economies. If all the national energy and climate targets made by governments are met in full and on time, as in the Announced Pledges Scenario, two-thirds of all vehicles sold in 2035 could be electric, avoiding around 12 mb/d of oil.

Expectations of strong growth are bolstering investment in the EV supply chain. Recent reporting shows that from 2022 to 2023, investment announcements in EV and battery manufacturing totalled almost USD 500 billion, of which around 40% has been committed. Over 20 major car manufacturers, representing more than 90% of global car sales in 2023, have set electrification targets. Taking the targets of all the largest automakers together, more than 40 million electric cars could be sold in 2030, which would meet the level of deployment projected under today’s policy settings.

Enough battery manufacturing capacity has reached a final investment decision to deliver on announced pledges from automakers and governments globally. Thanks to high levels of investment in the past 5 years, global EV battery manufacturing capacity far exceeded demand in 2023, at around 2.2 terawatt-hours and 750 gigawatt-hours, respectively. Demand is likely to grow quickly: up seven times by 2035 compared with 2023 in the Stated Policies Scenario, nine times in the Announced Pledges Scenario, and 12 times in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, which lays out a pathway to reach net zero energy sector emissions by mid-century. Manufacturing capacity appears capable of keeping pace with demand: committed and existing battery manufacturing capacity alone are practically aligned with the needs in a net zero pathway in 2030. Such prospects are opening significant opportunities across the supply chain for battery and mining companies, including in emerging markets outside China, although surplus capacity has been hurting margins and may lead to further market consolidation.

The pace of the transition to electric vehicles hinges on their affordability

Electric cars are getting cheaper as competition intensifies, particularly in China, but they remain more expensive than cars with internal combustion engines in other markets. A rapid transition to EVs will require bringing to market more affordable models. In China, we estimate that more than 60% of electric cars sold in 2023 were already cheaper than their average combustion engine equivalent. However, electric cars remain 10% to 50% more expensive than combustion engine equivalents in Europe and the United States, depending on the country and car segment. In 2023, two-thirds of available electric models globally were large cars, pick-up trucks or sports utility vehicles, pushing up average prices. When exactly price parity is reached is subject to a range of market variables, but current trends suggest that it could be reached by 2030 in major EV markets outside China for most models.

Price gap between the sales-weighted average price of conventional and electric cars in selected countries, before subsidy, by size, in 2018 and 2022

The pricing strategies of car manufacturers will be crucial for improving affordability, as will the pace of EV battery price decline. Turmoil in battery metal markets in 2022 led to the first price increase for lithium-ion packs, which became 7% more expensive than in 2021. In 2023, however, the prices of the key metals used to make batteries dropped, leading to a near-14% fall in pack prices year-on-year. China still supplies the cheapest batteries, but prices across regions are converging as batteries become a globalised commodity. Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries – which are significantly cheaper than those based on lithium, nickel, manganese and cobalt oxide – accounted for over 40% of global EV sales by capacity in 2023, more than double their share in 2020. Looking ahead, technological innovation will remain important for scaling up novel designs and chemistries such as sodium-ion batteries, which could cost as much as 20% less than lithium-based batteries without requiring any lithium.

In developing economies outside China, more affordable electric car models are arriving, and the future of electric two- and three-wheelers already looks bright. In 2023, 55% to 95% of the electric car sales across major emerging and developing economies were large models that are unaffordable for the average consumer, hindering mass-market uptake. However, smaller and much more affordable models launched in 2022 and 2023 have quickly become bestsellers, especially those by Chinese carmakers expanding overseas. Affordable electric two- and three-wheelers are also already available, helping deliver immediate benefits such as improved air quality and emissions reductions. Around 1.3 million electric two-wheelers were sold in India and Southeast Asia in 2023, accounting for 5% and 3% of total sales, respectively. One in five three-wheelers sold globally in 2023 was electric, and nearly 60% of those sold in India, boosted by the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME II) subsidy scheme.

As electric vehicle markets mature, second-hand electric cars will become more widely available . In 2023, the market size for used electric cars was around 800 000 in China, 400 000 in the United States, and over 450 000 across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The prices of used electric cars are falling quickly and becoming competitive with combustion engine equivalents. Looking ahead, international trade of used electric cars is also expected to increase, including to emerging and developing economies outside of China.

The battery recycling industry is getting ready for the 2030s. Recycling and reuse are needed for supply chain sustainability and security. Many technology developers are seeking to position themselves in EV end-of-life markets, but planned locations do not always align with where EV retirement may occur. Global battery recycling capacity reached 300 gigawatt-hours in 2023. If all announced projects materialise, it could exceed 1 500 gigawatt-hours in 2030, of which 70% would be in China. Globally, announced recycling capacity is more than three times the supply of batteries that could potentially be recycled in 2030, as EVs reach their end of life in the Announced Pledges Scenario. However, EV battery retirement is expected to grow rapidly from the second half of the 2030s.

The roll-out of public charging needs to keep pace with EV sales

The global number of installed public charging points was up 40% in 2023 relative to 2022, and growth for fast chargers outpaced that of slower ones . In major EV markets, the deployment of charging points is continuing apace thanks to targeted policies. Broad, affordable access to public charging infrastructure will be needed for a mass-market switch to electric transport and to enable longer journeys – even if most charging continues to take place privately in residential and workplace settings. To reach EV deployment levels in the Announced Policies Scenario, public charging needs to increase sixfold by 2035.

As more electric heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and large buses hit the road, dedicated and flexible charging is needed. In 2023, electric buses accounted for 3% of total bus sales. Electric truck sales jumped 35% compared with 2022, accounting for about 3% of truck sales in China and 1.5% in Europe. Under today’s policy settings, the stock of electric buses increases sevenfold by 2035 and that of electric trucks around thirtyfold, supported by tougher emissions standards in the United States and European Union. This level of deployment could require a twentyfold jump in charging capacity by 2035 – not only in depots, but also along main transit routes to enable long-distance trucking. Increasing heavy-duty charging has important implications for expanding and operating electrical grids, with opportunities for greater flexibility and renewables integration. Policy support, careful planning and co-ordination will be essential to ensure a secure, affordable and low-emissions supply of electricity with limited strain on local grids.

CapMetro board advances plans for Pleasant Valley, Expo Center rapid-bus routes

bus business plan in india

Capital Metro's governing board on Monday approved a land purchase and agreements for new park-and-ride sites to cap the ends of two proposed rapid-bus routes, advancing the Project Connect-funded mobility projects initially planned for a 2023 rollout.

Shipping delays and planning shortcomings resulted in a two-year delay, with the two routes — the  Pleasant Valley MetroRapid  and  Expo Center MetroRapid  — slated to come online in 2025. Both new routes would be served by fully electric buses with pickups as frequent as every 10 minutes.

In unanimous votes, the board approved a $20.7 million construction contract to build a park-and-ride facility on the Expo Center line and a $2 million purchase of a 1.79-acre tract of land for the future Goodnight Ranch Park-and-Ride site on the Pleasant Valley line.

The Expo Center MetroRapid is an approximately 12-mile line running along Trinity Street, San Jacinto Boulevard and Manor Road from the Travis County Exposition Center through Northeast Austin and to downtown. The line would serve "key activity centers," according to project documents, including downtown Austin, the University of Texas, Dell Seton Medical Center, St. David’s Medical Center and Dell Children’s Medical Center.

The Pleasant Valley MetroRapid is a roughly 15-mile line east of Interstate 35 along the East William Cannon Drive, Pleasant Valley Road and Airport Boulevard corridors — some of the highest ridership corridors in the Austin-area transit system, according to briefing documents given to board members.

Voters approved Project Connect in 2020 by a more than 15-percentage-point margin, raising the ad valorem property tax rate by 8.75 cents — an increase to the city's property tax rate by more than 20%. The new tax would go toward transforming the city's transit map with a new centerpiece light-rail system, four high-frequency bus routes — including the Pleasant Valley and Expo Center lines — and other improvements.

The Goodnight Ranch Park-and-Ride facility, on Slaughter Lane, will include four bus bays outfitted with charging equipment for the all-electric fleet using the line and 64 parking spaces for users, according to briefing materials.

Once built, the site — the land for which CapMetro will purchase from Goodnight Ranch LP, the developer of the nearby 700-acre mixed-use community of the same name near I-35 and Slaughter Lane in Southeast Austin — will be the southernmost park-and-ride lot in the Austin-area system, offering riders connections to medical, retail and educational facilities, including Austin Community College's Eastview Campus.

The Expo Center Park-and-Ride site, located on Decker Lane, will include eight bus bays outfitted with the same charging equipment and 144 parking spaces, according to briefing materials.

CapMetro staff recommended M.A. Smith Contracting Company Inc. to build the park-and-ride. The Austin-area contractor will build the site for $17.3 million with a $3.4 million contingency — about 20% — for a total amount not to exceed $20.7 million, according to briefing documents.

The future of Project Connect's funding model is subject to a pending bond validation lawsuit filed by the Austin Transit Partnership, the city's light-rail planning agency. The agency's lawsuit was consolidated with one filed last fall by critics of the transportation investment. A trial is set for late May.

CapMetro has received some federal funds for the two new MetroRapid lines. Last March, the Federal Transit Administration  announced  it would award $65.6 million to the transit agency to split between the two new lines, covering more than 60% of the costs for each.

A Gen Xer who got $250,000 in student loans forgiven said he can now finally start saving for retirement — and consider his dream of studying in India

  • Joel Lambdin, 49, received $250,000 in student-loan forgiveness in January.
  • It's a result of the Education Department's one-time account adjustments.
  • Lambdin said the relief would allow him to save for retirement and consider long-term dreams.

Insider Today

Joel Lambdin finished graduate school in 1998 — but as a professional musician, he was hardly making enough money to pay off his student loans and other bills.

So Lambdin, now 49, said his only option to make ends meet was to put his student loans in forbearance — in which he was not making payments but interest was still accumulating .

"It was just so that I could subsist, so that I could survive," Lambdin told Business Insider. "With the hope that at some point, I would be making enough money that I would be able to take them out of forbearance and start paying them down."

But he grew to realize that the only way he could make a significant dent in his student loans was by switching careers. He didn't want to do that because he loved working in music, so he decided to keep his larger student loan in forbearance and begin paying off his smaller loan with a lower monthly payment.

He continued making those payments until the pandemic pause on student-loan payments , at which point he and his wife started making a plan of action to tackle the larger debt once the pause ended. That led them to discover the Education Department's initiative allowing some borrowers a one-time account adjustment . It lets the department evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.

That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received on January 31, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage. It said: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."

For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out.

"It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there."

He added: "The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation."

While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said, discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.

Related stories

The Education Department continues to cancel student debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers , some of whom benefited from the adjustments.

Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief was also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India.

"It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."

'I've been really lucky'

While Lambdin said he felt as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.

For example, as BI has previously reported , some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet because of paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, funding for federal student-loan servicers is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers from customer service regarding their payment progress.

"There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."

Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and delayed billing statements . When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer made a mistake with the forgiveness , reinstating their payments months later.

The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has established an accountability framework to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.

The department is also in the process of crafting its new plan for student-loan forgiveness — it recently released the draft text of the rules , which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.

As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider various options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom.

"There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."
