One of the biggest anecdotes about Tim Walz that has been repeated during the Democratic National Convention is how he turned around an 0-and-27 Mankato West football team and made the high school into state champs as defensive coordinator. It’s a story that has been going around for years since Walz started his political career, but now there are some who have really taken exception to the story.

Walz’ opponents are saying he doesn’t deserve any of the credit, because he was only an assistant coach , used as a pejorative to lessen his role in the team’s success.

Just admit you don’t understand ball.

Saying that the architect of a defense can’t turn a team around is extremely weird. It’s led to a whole spate of people falling in step to also admit they don’t know a damn thing about football, while being willing to show their whole ass on the internet.

Bad news for Dick LeBeau and Buddy Ryan, because apparently y’all weren’t responsible for leading the Steelers and Bears to Super Bowl wins. More recently, the Chiefs were always dominant offensively, but it wasn’t until Steve Spagnuolo became defensive coordinator that the team became the most dominant in the NFL because he turned around that side of the ball.

Quite literally nobody who understands ball would dare to say a DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR can’t be responsible for turning a team around. After all, legendary Alabama head coach Bear Bryant said: “Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.”

It’s totally fine if you don’t agree with Walz politically, but boy is it sad to try and die on this hill. Especially when there’s been ample coverage over the years of exactly how Walz turned around the team by installing his now-famous 4-4 defense in 1996.

Unfortunately we can’t go back and look at Max Preps for records from the mid-90s, but we do have an official stat sheet from a game where Walz coached, courtesy of Newsweek . Inside it we can see that the reason Mankato West won this game was its defense.

Mankato West were clearly a hard-nosed run-first team on offense, but the difference was the Walz defense. We can see from the defensive stat sheet that the team recorded two interceptions, while also forcing two punts. Then, from kickoff returns we can see that only two were made by Mankato West. One would have to begin a half, meaning that the opponent only scored one touchdown or field goal, at most.

Couple this with the fact that players on the championship team directly give Walz credit for being the difference maker on the team and it’s abundantly clear that his installation of defense was directly responsible for boosting the team.

Dan Clement, a linebacker on the team and top of the list for defensive impact in this game, credits Walz with not only revolutionizing the defense — but preventing him from being a high school dropout .

“Every day, he would find me in the hallways, after school, and in between classes to tell me how important I was to the team, how much they needed me, and how much he wanted me there,” Clement said. “I played football for Tim Walz, not for anyone else. [...] Everybody on that linebacker group played hard for Tim Walz because he demanded a lot and was great at showing you what you needed to do, explaining it, and motivating you. The primary differentiation was definitely his energy and commitment to the individual,” Clement recalled.

So we can apply a little basic logic here: If a team is 0-27 in two years, and then they make one significant staffing change and it’s a new defensive coordinator, then that same team wins a state championship — hmmm ... what’s likely to have caused that team to turn around? The common factor, or the new one? That’s right! It was a TEAM victory the entire staff earned, but there’s no doubt that Coach Walz was responsible for the change in fortunes.

We can disagree about a lot of things in the country. We can argue over how government is supposed to operate. We have to be united in giving defensive coordinators the respect they deserve.

5 ways talking to Gemini Live is much, much better than using Google Assistant

Since Gemini Live became available to me on my Pixel 8 Pro late last week, I’ve found myself using it very often. Not because it’s the latest and hottest trend, no, but because almost everything I hated about talking to Google Assistant is no longer an issue with Gemini Live. The difference is staggering.

I have a lot to say about the topic, but for today, I want to focus on a few aspects that make talking to Gemini Live such a better experience compared to using Google Assistant or the regular Gemini .

Keep in mind, though, that if you bought a Pixel 9 Pro phone , you should get a full year of Google AI Premium for free, which lets you try out Gemini Live without subscribing.

English is only my third language and even though I’ve been speaking it for decades, it’s still not the most natural language for me to use. Plus, I have the kind of brain that zips all over the place. So, every time I wanted to trigger Google Assistant , I had to think of the exact sentence or question before saying, “Hey Google.” For that reason, and that reason alone, talking to Assistant never felt natural to me. It’s always pre-meditated, and it always requires me to pause what I’m doing and give it my full attention.

Gemini Live understands natural human speech. For me, it works around my own speech’s idiosyncracies, so I can start speaking without thinking or preparing my full question beforehand. I can “uhm” and “ah” mid-sentence, repeat myself, turn around the main question, and figure things out as I speak, and Live will still understand all of that.

I can even ask multiple questions and be as vague or as precise as possible. There’s really no restriction around how to speak or what to say, no specific commands, no specific ways to phrase questions — just no constraints whatsoever. That completely changes the usability of AI chatbots for me.

2. This is what real, continuous conversations should be like

Google Assistant added a setting for Continuous Conversations many years ago, but that never felt natural or all that continuous. I’d say “Hey Google,” ask it for something, wait for the full answer, wait an extra second for it to start listening again, and then say my second command. If I stay silent for a couple of seconds, the conversation is done and I have to re-trigger Assistant again.

Plus, Assistant treats every command separately. There’s no real ‘chat’ feeling, just a series of independent questions or commands and answers.

Gemini Live works differently. Every session is a real open conversation, where I can talk back and forth for a while, and it still remembers everything that came before. So if I say I like Happy Endings and ask for similar TV show recommendations, I can listen in, then ask more questions, and it’ll keep in mind my preference for Happy Endings-like shows.

I can also interrupt it at any point in time and correct it if it misunderstood me or if the answer doesn’t satisfy me. I don’t have to manually scream at it to stop or wait for it as it drones on for two minutes with a wrong answer. I can also change the conversation topic in an instant or give it more precise questions if needed.

Plus, Gemini Live doesn’t shut off our chat after a few seconds of silence. So I can take a few seconds to properly assimilate the answer and think of other clarifications or questions to ask, you know, like a normal human, instead of a robot who has the follow-ups ready in a second.

Better yet, I can minimize Live and go use other apps while still keeping the chat going. I’ve found this excellent while browsing or chatting with friends. I can either invoke Live mid-browsing to ask questions and get clarifications about what I’m reading, or start a regular Live chat then pull up a browser to double check what Gemini is telling me.

3. TL;DR? Ask it for a summary

As I mentioned earlier, every command is a separate instance for Google Assistant. Gemini Live considers an entire chat as an entity, which lets me do something I could never do with Assistant: ask for a summary.

So if I had a chat about places to run around in Paris and test the new Panorama mode on the Pixel 9 series, I can ask it for a summary in the end, and it’ll list all of them. This is incredibly helpful when trying to understand complex topics or get a list of suggestions, for example.

4. Want to talk more about a specific topic? Resume an older chat

At one point, I opened Gemini Live and said something like, “Hey, can we continue our chat about Paris panorama photos?” And it said yes. I was a bit gobsmacked. So I went on, and it seemed to really know where we left off. I tried that again a few times, and it worked every time. Google Assistant just doesn’t have anything like this.

Another way to trigger this more reliably is to open Gemini, expand the full Gemini app, tap on Recents and open a previous chat. Tapping on the Gemini Live icon in the bottom right here allows you to continue an existing chat as if you never stopped it or exited it.

5. Check older chats and share them to Drive or Gmail

Viewing my Google Assistant history has always been a convoluted process that requires going to my Google account, finding my personal history, and checking the last few commands I’ve done.

With Gemini, it’s so easy to open up previous Live chats and read everything that was said in them. Even better, every chat can be renamed, pinned to the top, or deleted in its entirety. Plus, every response can be copied, shared, or quickly exported to Google Docs or Gmail. This makes it easy for me to manage my Gemini Live data, delete what needs to be deleted, and share or save what I care about.

Google Assistant still has a (significant) leg up

Despite everything Gemini Live does well, there are so many instances where I felt its limitations while using it. For one, the Live session is separate from the main Gemini experience, and Live only treats general knowledge questions, not personal data. So I can ask Gemini (not Live) about my calendar, send messages with it, start timers, check my Drive documents, control my smart home, and more, just as I could with Assistant, but I can’t do any of that with Gemini Live. The latter is more of a lively Google Search experience and all the regular Gemini extensions aren’t accessible in Live. Google said it was working on bringing them over, though, and that is the most exciting prospect for me.

Because of how it’s built and what it currently does, Gemini Live requires a constant internet connection and there’s nothing you can do without it. Assistant is able to handle some basic local commands like device controls, timers, and alarms, but Gemini Live can’t.

And for now, my experience with multiple language in Gemini Live support has been iffy at best — not like Assistant’s support of multiple languages is stellar, but it works. On my phone, which is set to English (US), Gemini Live understands me only when I speak in English. I can tell it to answer in French, and it will, but it won’t understand me or recognize my words if I start speaking French. I hope Google brings in a more natural multilingual experience to it, because that could be life-changing for someone like me who thinks and talks in three languages at the same time.

Logistically, my biggest issue with Gemini Live is that I can’t control it via voice yet. My “Hey Google” command opens up the main Gemini voice command interface, which is neat, but I need to manually tap the Live button to trigger a chat. And when I’m done talking, the chat doesn’t end unless I manually tap to end it. No amount of “thank you,” “that’s it,” “we’re done,” “goodbye,” or other words did the trick to end the chat. Only the red End button does.

Realistically, though, my biggest Gemini Live problem is that there’s no sourcing for any of the info it shares. Assistant used to be a stickler for sourcing everything; how many times have you heard say something like, “According to [website];” or, “on the [website], they say…?” Gemini Live just states facts , instead, with no immediate way to verify them. All I can do is end the chat, go to the transcript, and check for the Google button that appears below certain messages, which shows me related searches I can do to verify that info. Not very intuitive, Google, and not respectful to the millions of sites you’ve crawled to get your answer like, uh, I don’t know…  Android Authority  perhaps?

Foreign diplomat ordered to pay more than $500,000 to a former domestic worker in wage exploitation case

When Priyanka Danaratna moved from Sri Lanka to Australia to work for a diplomat nearly a decade ago, she was optimistic about her future.

She was in her mid-thirties and had never visited another country before.

But that optimism faded when she arrived in Canberra and unknowingly entered a "slavery-type arrangement", says David Hillard, a pro bono partner at law firm Clayton Utz.

Ms Danaratna was employed as a domestic worker in the home of the then-deputy high commissioner of Sri Lanka, Himalee Subhashini de Silya Arunatilaka, between 2015 and 2018.

"She worked seven days a week for three years, and she had two days off in that entire time — and she did that because she burned her hand while preparing some food," Mr Hillard says.

Over the course of those three years, she was only paid $11,212 for her work.

Mr Hillard says effectively she worked nonstop for three years for about 65 cents an hour.  

For context, when Ms Danaratna began working in Australia in 2015, the national minimum wage for a 38-hour week was $656.90.

Mr Hillard said her employment was in breach of Australian employment laws because she was paid such low wages and worked more hours a week than allowed under the appropriate award. She was not given unpaid breaks, not paid overtime or penalty rates, not paid regularly or issued payslips, which are all breaches of the Fair Work Act.

"It's an example of how modern slavery works," he says.

"Vulnerable employees find themselves trapped in a situation where their lives are nothing but work, in a job they cannot escape."

Mr Hillard represented Ms Danaratna in legal proceedings against Ms Arunatilaka in a civil case under the Fair Work Act. She was accused of underpaying her employee $374,000.

In a judgement handed down on Thursday, the Federal Court found that Ms Arunatilaka breached the Fair Work Act in a number of ways, including not paying in accordance with Australian employment laws.

In addition to $374, 000 in unpaid wages, the court ordered Ms Arunatilaka to pay more than $169,000 in interest, bringing the total owing to more than $543,000. 

Ms Arunatilaka is now the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Office at Geneva.

"She's in a very senior diplomatic role now in Geneva. I think it's absolutely appalling that this can be allowed to happen," Mr Hillard says.

"But I think it also reflects on perhaps the nature of … the diplomatic world in that I suspect that perhaps Ms Arunatilaka and the Sri Lankan government have not viewed what she's done as something that's particularly extraordinary. That this perhaps is just par for the course in terms of how domestic workers are treated in the residences of senior diplomats."

Confiscated passport 

When Ms Danaratna arrived in Australia in September 2015, she spoke very little English. She was surprised when Ms Arunatilaka asked for her passport upon her arrival.

"She told me that she would give me the passport back before I left Australia. Ms Arunatilaka did not explain why she wanted my passport. I gave my passport to her. I never saw that passport again," Ms Danaratna said in an affidavit.

Later, when she discovered Australia's average wage, she "felt foolish for coming to Australia for such a small salary."

The small amount she did earn was paid into a Sri Lankan bank account, which she could not easily access from Canberra.

Mr Hillard says more work needs to be done by the government to ensure workers like Ms Danaratna aren't completely isolated and taken advantage of while they are in Australia.

"There needs to be some way of checking in that people have access to their passport," he says.

"If you're in a foreign country and your passport is removed, and the only place that you can apply to get your passport replaced is through the local diplomat, then you're effectively going to be very vulnerable for these sorts of slave-like arrangements, and so we have to make sure that doesn't happen," Mr Hillard says.

The escape plan

Ms Danaratna claims that during her time in Canberra, she was not allowed to leave the house that she lived in with the former Deputy High Commissioner and her husband without permission. When she did leave the house, she was often accompanied by someone from the household.

Sometimes she was permitted to go for a short walk around the neighbourhood on her own. Eventually this helped her escape.

"Ms Arunatilaka was not impolite to me and never made threats to me. However, she did not provide me with satisfactory clothing and food. I did not feel like I was being treated properly," she said in her affidavit.

It wasn't until she had relayed her negative experiences to her family in Sri Lanka that they advised her to reach out to the Salvation Army in Australia.

"On August 14, 2018, I told Ms Arunatilaka and her husband that I was going for a walk. I left Ms Arunatilaka's residence, and the two people from the Salvation Army were waiting for me nearby in a car," she said.

The group drove to Sydney, where Ms Danaratna was taken to a Salvation Army safe house .

Not an uncommon case

Claudia Cummins is the modern slavery lead for the Salvation Army. She says cases like these aren't uncommon.

"Over the time that the safe house program has existed to support people who've experienced modern slavery, we've often seen quite a high number of people experiencing what's known as domestic servitude — so, being treated like a slave, often in a home environment, in a private home," she explains.

"And of those people, we've certainly seen probably at least a dozen people who've been exploited by a diplomat."

Mr Hillard has also witnessed this, as he's worked on a number of cases involving domestic workers who've been taken advantage of financially by former diplomats in Australia.

"[Clayton Utz has] been involved in matters with senior diplomats from a range of countries, including India , Pakistan and Sri Lanka," he says. 

"They all follow a fairly similar pattern of … people who are extremely isolated within the Australian community, who are brought here and paid what would be seen by anyone in Australia as really pitiful wages, to work for a senior diplomat in their home."

Diplomatic immunity

Diplomats receive a wide range of privileges and immunities while serving in Australia. These entitlements are covered by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which enables diplomats to conduct their work in a foreign country without hindrance.

These privileges include immunity from searches, arrests, prosecutions or even having to give evidence.

However Ms Arunatilaka is not immune to prosecution in the case concerning her treatment of Ms Danaratna, says Mr Hillard.

"In Australia, over the last few years, there have been a series of court cases that have … set up quite a precedent globally," he says.

"That is in respect of the private employment arrangements that diplomats enter into, to have somebody cook and clean their house, they don't have any diplomatic immunity protection in respect of that, once they've ceased to be a diplomat.

"So although Ms Arunatilaka might enjoy some other diplomatic immunity in respect of things she did as part of her official duties, in terms of employing someone to cook and clean for her for 16 hours a day, seven days a week, she has no diplomatic immunity, and that's why we're able to bring these proceedings."

Ms Cummins says the Salvation Army would like to see justice for any person who has experienced similar treatment, regardless of who has exploited them.

"If anybody has identified someone who might be at risk of a modern slavery situation, or they suspect they could be experiencing modern slavery, whether that's in domestic work or in any other setting … support is available," she says.

"Obviously, people can contact the Australian Federal Police for support, but you can also contact the Salvation Army and other community-based organisations for support as well."

The ABC contacted Himalee Arunatilaka for comment, but she did not respond at time of publication.

The United Nations Office in Geneva was also asked for a comment on the proceedings.
