Long Essay on My Pet Dog in English

Essay on My Pet dog german shepherd. My pet dog is my best friend in the whole world. My dog is not just like every other dog in the street, it is a special dog that loves me unconditionally. I found the dog with my parents when I was walking from school one day.

How did I Meet My Pet Dog?

It was around 10 o clock in the night and it was raining cats and dogs in our street. Everyone was inside the comfort of their homes and me and my mom ran back to our house to save ourselves from getting drenched. I asked my mom to make me some hot onion pakodas. It would be like heaven to have pakodas during heavy rains. Hot pakodas on cold and rainy days are the best part of my school days. The pakodas arrived and I and my father sat on the balcony having a good conversation while eating those delicious pakodas. But there was meagre moaning somewhere near my house that we could bearly hear. My father and I got worried. We thought something might be wrong and went outside to check upon.

And there he was, Raamu, my pet dog and my best friend in the whole world, abandoned by someone near the rainwater drainage pipe next to our house. I could barely see puppy as cute and innocent as Raamu, shivering and fully drenched in that cold rainy night. I felt bad for the dog and gave my pakodas and some bread to him. He ate it in a matter of just a few seconds. Then I and my father decided to take him home. We gave him good food and a hot shower and washed him with my own towel. This was 2 years back.

And ever since that lucky rainy night, Raamu is with us and he is our family now. When someone asks how many people are there in your family, I always say we are four of us, my mom, my dad, and my Ramu.

Why I Love My Pet Dog?

As I am writing this essay on my pet dog, Raamu is enjoying a good game of ball with my dad in the lawn area. There are many reasons why I love Ramu and one small essay on my pet dog will not be sufficient to express my love and affection for him. Nevertheless, I will try to write all the reason why I love my pet dog

  • My dog is incredibly and unconditionally loyal to me. He loves me as much as I love him or sometimes more
  • He is like the best teddy bear to cuddle with
  • We always play catch outside my house or sometimes in the park
  • He and I always sleep together on my bed and he wakes me up before anyone else in the house
  • He is the reason I am active and good at exercise. He will never let me be lazy. Whenever possible, we always keep playing some or the other games with him
  • Whenever I fight with my parents on friends, Raamu, my pet dog will always be there with me to support me and shower unconditional love on me
  • He is the first person to be happy whenever I come back home from school. He will cuddle and lick all over my face and show me how much he missed me while I was gone

Ramu is not just our family member, he is the most clever member of our family. He will play games with us, keep all our family members together with his love and cuddles and also he keeps thieves and uninvited guests out of our home. My pet dog is the best thing ever that has happened to me in my life.

We found him near our house on the streets, on a rainy night and ever since that cold and scary night, he has been with us and has become an important part of my life. He is always the first one to greet me whenever I come back home from outside. He is a foodie who likes to eat pedigree and biscuits. He also eats curd rice sometimes. He eats three times a day with me and sleeps twice or sometimes thrice whenever he is tired after playing outside. He not only loves our family but also acts as a guardian to our house and helps in keeping thieves and bad people away from us. My pet dog is named as Raamu and I love him very much.

Essay on My Pet Dog for Students

Essay writing is a crucial part of language studies. Not just that, it is also a mandatory question in the school exam. Essay writing is included in the exam to check students’ imagination and how well they can weave their thoughts into words. It also evaluates someone’s understanding of language and grammar. Many people love to have dogs as their pets as they are friendly, loyal and a great stress reliever. Students can get a free essay on My Pet Dog at Vedantu’s site.

An Introduction On My Pet Dog

The relationship between humans and dogs can’t be expressed in words. Dogs are loyal and friendly and their love is unconditional. Make friends with dogs and you will never feel lonely. A dog is a domestic animal. Dogs are harmless unless someone attacks them.

On the way back from school, I found a helpless hungry puppy lying on the roadside. I brought it home. It was obvious, my mother burst with anger on seeing this. But with time, my mother accepted him and allowed him to stay with us. He has sparkles in his eyes which attracted us. My sister called him Sheru and that’s how he got a new name. Sheru does not demand much but good food, frequent conversation, exercise and a little fun activity.

Sheru is a member of our family. He loves to play and jumps all around the house. Everyone in the family loves him dearly as he is a stress buster for us. He is loyal and is a protractor of our family. There are a lot of lessons for why everyone must have dogs at home. Life becomes easy when you have an anytime available mate like them. They provide sympathy in our bad times, behave like a bodyguard in times of crises and a loving sibling at the time when we are lonely.

Long Essay on Pet Dogs

Around the world, people keep various animals as their pets. Some are fond of cats, while others prefer fish aquariums, some love to play with cows in the cattle field. But by far, the most adored animal on the planet is a dog. It is called a man’s best friend for the same reason. The loyalty of a dog is unmatched and unbeatable. The best instinct in dogs is to protect their owner. In a world that is constantly changing and there is a rush in every aspect of life, pets provide a sense of security and peace for their owners. When the owner returns home, he/she finds a dog waiting and jumps towards them with a sense of joy and excitement. Dogs are an excellent company. A loyal confidante and undeniably cute. There are various instances in which dogs have shown their bravery, saved the lives of their owners. Some dogs, even though they aren't physically savage, still manage to rescue their owners from danger. The dogs can sense something wrong before it even happens. Animals are gifted with a sixth sense.

For introverted people, dogs tend to be the perfect companions. The company of a dog is what a person needs when he/she is sad or upset. Dogs provide love and support, and they accurately detect when their owner is sad or crying.

Studies have shown that being in company with a dog can result in less anxiety. For someone battling with anxiety disorder, I can vouch for it, that dogs are the greatest stress busters, and sometimes even replace therapy sessions. A long walk with a dog can do the trick.

Types of Dogs

Dogs come in a variety of breeds. The most famous dog breeds are Labrador retrievers, bulldogs, german shepherds and pugs.

Although all the dogs are extremely friendly, nothing can beat a labrador when it comes to friendliness. They are loving and understand when their owner is upset or happy. The German shepherds, Dobermann and the bulldogs are quite protective, they serve well if the owner is living alone. The smaller breeds like pug and chihuahua are cute and are not that hard to tame. Pomeranians with their long hair are a little hard to maintain, but still can be done.

In a real-life incident that happened in 2013, a mountain dog called Bella saved her owner out of a burning house. That's how protective and caring the dogs are.

The reason dogs are so protective when it comes to their owners is that they consider them a family. But for a dog to act right when it's being protective it needs to be trained. Most dogs act aggressively when they are protective.

Short Essay On My Pet Dog

Owning a dog is also a huge responsibility and commitment. Owning a dog means taking care of it like a family member. It is like having a younger sibling or a small child in the home that constantly needs care and attention.

Before owning a pet, one also needs to know how to train a dog as it is quite important.

The dogs also need timely health checkups and they need to be taken to the vet constantly. The diet should also be taken care of since most dogs are allergic to some things.

How Do Dogs Positively Affect Human Health?

Research has shown that, in the company of dogs, humans are more cheerful and happy. It is also known to reduce anxiety in humans as well as lower blood pressure. In severe cases, being in the company of dogs has cured depression and other mental health issues.

Health Around Dogs

Any scratches or bites from dogs can be painful and may even be infectious, especially when dogs don't feel safe around something or are scared. The dog injuries can be prevented by training them and also taking a handful of precautions. Regular visits to the vet clinic can be helpful to keep any dog's infections or mites on the bay.

When petting the dog make sure the hands are washed before and after. This will reduce the risk of infections if any.

The dogs also need hygienic surroundings. The food supplies and the dog utensils should be kept clean.

It is a human need to be loved and appreciated, and dogs do that pretty well. With the company of a dog, a human can seldom feel alone. Humans are more likely to recover from illnesses when they are in the company of a dog. The interesting fact is that owning a dog will increase one's physical activity and well-being, as you need to consistently take them out for a walk outdoors, it is a win-win for both the owner and the dog.

His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. Essay on My Pet in 250 words

My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us.

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc.

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

Essay on My Pet Dog for Students and Children in 1000+ Words

Animals have a major role to play in balancing an environment . Apart from that, in certain respects, they are useful to humans. People love to have a lot of animals in their homes. Among them, the dog really is an animal that you can see “my pet” as a companion in many homes.

The canine has been a human partner since prehistoric days, so we find these dogs worldwide. There are hundreds of these breeds. However, every variation has one common factor, honesty , and fidelity to the lord.

My favorite pet dog

I chose him, along with his few distinctive attributes. Bruno refers to a popular dog breed named Labrador retriever. Bruno is a full-bodied chocolate-colored body with such a black border across the neck.

Considering that they knew our families well, they readily decided. Little did we realize that after his arrival, our lives would forever change.

At midnight, the fire broke out during our home. He saw the risk that we were in. My pet dragged my quilt aside and kept me awake. He took me to a kitchen. To my utter surprise, I noticed that a heap with dry fuel was lying there, and then all the fire climbed to the roof, or at once, and the other house members climbed from sleep. They kept the fire under control in the next few minutes. This action of Bruno cherished us all the more.

My Pet Changed my Life

Certainly, Bruno has made us stronger human beings. We are much more humane for animals today. There was one incident where the stray dogs will hurt a kitten, or to our delight, Bruno rescued the little kitten or took her home.

10 line on My Pet

The obedience that a dog displays to its owner is the best lesson human beings can gain from them. They are the companions of men who are always true to them and in their good or poor days. Further, all they have to is a little piece of bread as well as a lot of affection.

500 words essay on My Dog

My love and affection for a pet was from childhood. I always wanted a dog but could never get one. I always envied those who had one, until one day when I got to know that our new neighbour had a pet dog. I was super excited to meet him. The dog they had was a pug, I used to play with him daily. Pugs are a breed of dog that shed very little hair. Moreover, they are clever and energetic.

Now that I had spent enough time with a pet dog, I was even more sure that I wanted a pet dog. So, when I got an opportunity to have a pet, I selected a pug. He is an extremely lively dog and always keeps us on our toes whenever we are out to play with it. We have named it Buddy and it indeed is our best Buddy. Pugs are very friendly and cheerful. Buddy has gelled along extremely well with our family and all of us love him dearly.

Advantages of having a pet dog

Dogs are the best friend of human beings. Whenever we are sad or feeling low, pets are always there to energize us. There are times in my life when I feel alone and isolated. In those days my dog helped me a lot by giving me the best companionship. Dogs are no doubt the best companions but they also help us in releasing pain, anxiety, and stress.

Dogs increase our possibility to exercise, if we have a dog then it is most likely that we will go out for a walk. We will indulge ourselves in any sort of physical activity because of the dog.

Food for pet dog

While taking care of my dog , I learned a lot about the type of food dogs eat and prefer. Most of us think that the most prominent food for a dog is meat. It is true but dogs can eat many fruits, grains, and vegetables that are safe for them. The non-meat food is beneficial for dogs as they are a source of vital minerals, vitamins, and fiber.

Other than this I feed my dog with dog biscuits . There are many dog biscuits available in the market which are good for the health of the pet. It contains protein and calcium which helps dogs in strengthening their bones. A healthy diet for dogs contains grain, fruits, vegetables, meat, and dog biscuits.

Safety tips for pet dogs

While keeping a pet dog one must take care of many things. Don’t let your dogs roam in the street alone as it will be dangerous for the dog. Also, while walking make sure you keep your dog on a leash to protect it from people and other animals.

Don’t give “people food” to the dog as many foods are dangerous for pets and can cause serious health issues. Chocolates, candies, raw egg, avocado, onion, garlic, grapes and raisins are some of the harmful foods for the dog.

Do you have a pet dog?

People who have a pet dog feel extremely lucky and happy to have their and the bond they have their dogs. Dogs have been the best animal friends of humans. They love, protect, and support the humans around them. However, if you are writing the ‘my pet dog essay’ and need help with it, you can read the three essays given in this article.

Here are three small essays on your pet dog within three different word limits. If you are looking for something similar, this article should be able to help.

My Pet Dog Essay: 600 Words

Dogs have been man’s best friend for centuries and one of the most wonderful animal companion that we could ask for. They have earned this title because they have been by our side since the ancient times – accompanying and aiding us on hunts, serving during wars, and guarding and protecting us, our livestock and our property even during some of the most threatening situations. Even today, dogs work closely with humans in a variety of different roles such as search and rescue dogs, assisting in police and military work, emotional support dogs and guide dogs for the blind.

They also love us unconditionally which is why, nowadays we mostly adopt dogs for companionship. They are seen as part of family members and treated as one too. Having talked about why dogs are considered a man’s best friend, I would now like to share a personal story on why I love dogs so much.

My Story: How I got a chance to adopt a dog

I have wanted a pet dog for a long time and even asked my parents to let me have one – any breed would have sufficed, even a indie. But my parents did not let me have one because they thought that I am not ready to take full responsibility of a living animal and they dont have the time to take care of a dog either.

So I wasnt allowed to keep a dog at home. However, they did not stop me from petting the street dogs outside home and sometimes giving them biscuits and other food items. In this way, I became friends with quite a few indie dogs outside my home. One day while I was going to the market, I noticed that some men were hitting a dog with stones and sticks because the dog had stolen something from their shop. The dog was badly injured and was bleeding. Seeing this, I immediately tried to stop the men from hitting the dog and said that I will pay for the food that the dog has stolen.

I paid the men for the food items that the dog stole and then I bought some first aid kit. I called my father who helped me to carry the dog to our house. Then my father and I slowly washed the wounds and bandaged them. The dog was so badly hurt that it didnt even try to bite us. We offered it some liquid food and it ate gladly. We also prepared a makeshift bed for the dog in front of our main gate. There the dog lay for three day eating and drinking whatever we put in front of him. After three days, he felt slightly better and was able to get up and limp around. After a week, the dog was completely healed and was again running around as usual.

How a dog saved our house from getting Robbed

Some weeks after, it was around midnight, when we heard the shout of a man. It sounded like someone crying in pain and then we heard a few dogs barking. My father went out to check and then he called me excitedly. I went out to see and saw a man lying with a bleeding leg, and the dog that we took care of standing on him with a few other dogs around. Turns out that the man was a thief who was planning on breaking and entering our house. But before he could do, the dog (the one we took care of) attacked him along with his friends. We called the police and handed the thief to them. My mother and father was so impressed with the dog, they decided to adopt him. I was so happy at the decision. We adopted him, gave him the name Rex and he lives with us.

My Pet Dog Essay: 500 Words

Pet Dog Essay

A pet dog is one of the most beloved companions anyone can ask for. It’s no wonder that we often end up building a bond with them that is nothing less than that of best friends. I could get myself other animals, but I choose a dog because of their loyalty, affection, and protective instincts.

Importance Of A Pet Dog

Dogs are not just great pets. They are great companions as well. They play with us, offer us love without asking for anything in return, and sometimes, they help us with the emotional support we need. When we have no one to cuddle and express our grief to, we have our dog. In this essay, I will talk about how I met my favorite animal, my pet dog Max.

My Pet Dog Max

I have a Golden Retriever who I named Max. I cannot think of my late mornings without Max waking me up and my late returns from school without him waiting at the door. Max is a very friendly and playful dog. He is always excited to see me and greets me with his tail wagging and his tongue out.

When I return home, he rushes to me, trying to get on my lap while wagging his tail. Max never misses the chance to mean his love for me. He is a very active dog, and he loves to play fetch. I enjoy spending time with him, playing fetch, and taking him for walks.

Max is a great companion. He is always by my side and loves to go where I go. He loves to cuddle and is always ready to give me a hug. Max is a better listener than many people I met in life. Whenever I was thinking out loud or saying something to him, he would stare at me and give me a hug when I was finished.

Max is also very protective of my family and me. He barks at strangers; but when he sees me or anyone from the family acting friendly with them, he changes his approach. He learns fast and is a very smart dog.

Taking care of Max has taught me so many things, including patience, responsibility, and love. He makes a better human out of me by handing me the responsibility of loving him. He needs me to walk him, feed him, and take him to the vet. Not everyone trusts me with all these responsibilities, but Max does. Max can be stubborn sometimes, it only shows how very alike the two are.

In addition to being a great companion, Max has also brought a lot of joy to my life. His playful nature and friendly personality to everyone at home put a smile on my face. Max has also helped me to meet new people. He is a charmer by nature. Whenever I take him for a walk, people almost beg me to let them pet him. Max takes them positively and is nice to most.

In conclusion, having Max in my life has been a wonderful experience. He makes me happy, supported, and busy. I don’t feel any stress or sadness since Max is in my life. He is a great friend and companion I never want to lose.

My Pet Dog Essay: 200 Words

Pet Dog Essay

I started bonding with an animal for the first time when I took home my only pet dog, Bhola. It was difficult for him to adjust to the other humans at first. Although Bhola and I became intimate and friendly, the start was not so happy.

I was returning from school, and I saw a little puppy sitting beside its mother, who had died due to a road accident. People on the street were passing by without paying attention. A group of people cleared the street of the dead body. But the puppy had nowhere to go. So, I decided to take it home.

When my mother opened the gate, she was angry and called my father. When my father came to the gate, he smiled at me and asked me to take it inside. So, I took Bhola inside forever. Yes, I named the puppy Bhola. It has been three years, and Bhola has been living with me and my family happily.

Bhola has become bigger, healthier, and more active. He loves everyone in the house and loves to play with us. Bhola has become my friend and my companion who I cannot imagine my days without. He is always with me when no one else is.

My Pet Dog Essay: 100 Words

My-Pet-Dog

A pet dog is an amazing companion to have. I have a Labrador Retriever named Phillip, and he is the perfect addition to our family. Phillip is a friendly and playful dog who loves to run and play fetch. He is also very loyal and protective of our family.

Taking care of a dog requires a lot of responsibility, but the love and joy they bring to our lives make it all worthwhile. Phillip is a wonderful companion who always puts a smile on our faces. We feel lucky to have him as our pet, and we cherish the time we spend with him.

Bottom Line

Many of us have a Bhola, a Max, or a Philip at home. Our pet dogs are often our moral and emotional support. They not only offer us company, these animals have active parts in our lives. My Pet Dog Essay – 200 words

My pet dog is a pug. It is fawn in colour and has a small built. We have named it Swigi. It has been with us since the last 2 years. I still remember the day me and my sister went to the pet shop with my father to bring it home. I somehow wanted to pet a cat but my elder sister, Riya is almost crazy about dogs and was adamant that we get a dog as a pet. Other members of my family also believed that keeping a dog as a pet was a better choice and so a cute little one month old pug came home with us that day and became a part of our family.

Though everyone in the family takes care of Swigi, my sister is especially particular about its cleanliness, vaccinations and eating habits. We make Swigi bath twice a week. It is actually my favourite time of the week. We take it to the terrace and bathe him with a pipe. We make sure it gets its food on time and goes for stroll twice every day. Swigi also accompanies us everywhere we go.

Swigi is quite an active dog and loves playing with ball. It is super fun playing with it.

Barney remains vigilant all the time. It barks at the sound of any hustle near the home especially at night. It has a strong smelling sense and grows suspicious if it experiences any strange or unfamiliar smell. Dogs are extremely faithful and want nothing but the best for their masters. Barney is no exception. It is very protective about our family and thus guards our house at all times.

I love spending time with Barney. It makes me forget all my tensions and worries. It stands near the front door waiting for me when it is time for me to come home from school and wags its tail as soon as it sees me. We are both extremely delighted to see each other.

My Pet Dog Essay – 400 words

I have an adorable Dachshund as my pet. It is an extremely lively dog and always keeps us on toes whenever we are out to play with it. We have named it Buddy and it indeed is our best Buddy. Dachshunds are very friendly and cheerful. Buddy has gelled along extremely well with our family and loves all of us dearly. We also love it with all our heart.

My Pet Dog’s Features

With their long and low bodies, Dachshunds look quite different from the other breeds of dogs. Here is how my Buddy looks like and behaves:

  • Buddy is chocolate brown in colour and is long haired.
  • It is a miniature sized Dachshund.
  • It has a very strong smelling power.
  • It has a very pleasant and friendly disposition. It befriends all our friends, neighbours and relatives who come home and is eager to play with them.
  • It is also very brave and clever. It always remains cautious about who roams around in the street next to our house and barks at any suspicious or unfamiliar person around.
  • It is also very curious about things.
  • It is Fun Playing with Buddy

Dachshunds are hyper active and always keen on playing different games. Buddy particularly loves playing with the ball. So every evening we take it out for around half an hour and indulge him in this activity. It is not only fun for Buddy but an extremely amazing experience for me and my brother too.

Buddy also loves travelling. We often go for weekend outings and Buddy is always super excited to go along with us. Since it is small in size, it is not a hassle to take it along. It does not even require much food which makes it quite travel-friendly.

It has been a year that we have brought him home and our friends and cousins have started visiting us all the more since then. A cheerful soul that it is, everyone is fond of it and wants to spend time with it.

We mostly keep it tied with a chain when it is home. My mother particularly makes it a point that Buddy is tied with its chain near the balcony. This is because the moment we untie it, it runs around the house breaking every single thing that comes its way.

Pet dogs are fun to be around and especially if it is a Dachshund, you can never get bored. Each day seems exciting and fun in its company. Buddy is the lifeline of our family.

My Pet Dog Essay – 500 words

When I was young, we had a Doberman as a pet. It became a part of my family even before I was born. So, I knew him from the time I was born. Doberman have a strong sixth sense and always remain vigilant. However, you can see their soft side when they are in the company of little kids and I have experienced this side of my pet Doberman whom we lovingly called, Bruno.

Why My Parents Decided to Pet a Dog?

My parents shifted to Goa soon after their marriage. They found a house on rent. It was a beautiful house that was well-suited for a family of two. However, the only problem was that the house stood aloof. It was at a distance from the other houses in the vicinity. In order to ensure the safety and security of my mother as my father went to the office, it was decided to bring home a pet dog. They decided to go for a Doberman as it is a fearless, brave and sturdy dog. Owing to this nature, Doberman dogs are also preferred in police and military services all around the world.

My mother was already fond of dogs and Bruno became her best friend in the new city. Since, Doberman require exercise every day, she took it for walk twice every day. My dad also enjoyed its company. Bruno grew extremely fond of me as soon as I was born and guarded me all the time. It also played with me.

Why We Had to Give Away Our Doberman?

I was extremely attached to Bruno and so was my mother. However, we had to give it away as my father got a good job opportunity in the United States and we had to shift there for two years. With heavy heart, we gave him to one of our neighbours who gladly took it home. We often called them up to ask for Bruno’s well being.

How I Found An Indian Spitz?

We shifted back to India after two years however, this time to a different city. I wanted to keep a pet dog again but my mother was not keen on it. However, it seemed like God heard my wish and fulfilled it.

One day when I was walking back home from school, I saw a Spitz struggling to get its leg out of a cycle tyre. I immediately went to help it. It was someone’s pet but seemed like it had lost its way. I helped it get rid of the tyre and gave a pat on its head. Spitzs are known to be quite affectionate. It began licking my arm. I looked around for its master but could not find anyone. As I began walking home, it started following me. I kept taking it back to the place I had found it for weeks in the hope to find its master but did not find anyone. Since then, it stays with us. I have named it Jiggles.

Dogs are very loving and caring. They shower love and are faithful to their masters. It is an amazing feeling to have a dog as a pet.

My Pet Dog Essay – 600 words

I have a pet dog named Roger. It is a German shepherd and it has been a part of my family since the last 3 years. It is very warm, friendly and playful. However, outsiders often find it dangerous. This is because of its built and colour. It is vigilant and guards our house all the time.

Why I wanted to keep a Pet Dog?

Everyone in my family is fond of Roger. We all treat him like a family member. We cannot imagine life without him. However, I still remember the time when I wanted to keep a pet dog and all my family members were against the idea. I was 8 years old that time and my friend, Aanya owned a very cute little pug. She always brought it to the park. Whenever I visited her place, I saw her playing with it. Both of them looked so happy and loved each other’s company. Many a times, I called Aanya to play with me at my home but she refused saying she was busy feeding or bathing Roger. I felt really bad and wished that I too had a dog as a company. It is then that I decided to bring home a pet dog.

How I struggled to get My Pet Dog?

I knew I wanted a dog as a pet but I wasn’t aware that it would be such a struggle for me to convince my parents to get one home. As soon as, the thought of keeping a pet dog came into my mind, I rushed to my mom and told her that I want to get one home. My mother just laughed and dismissed my request with a pat on my cheek. I repeated my wish and she again took it lightly. This infuriated me and I told her that I really wanted a pet. It was then that my mother realized that I was serious about it. So she made me sit and explained as to why we could not keep a pet.

Both my parents are working. Though my grandparents live with us, they are old and taking care of a pet would have been too much to ask from them. Besides, my brother was a toddler then and my mother feared that he might catch infection. She tried to explain all these points to me. But I did not listen to any of her explanations. I went to my grandmother and requested her to convince mom to get a pet dog. My grandmother also tried to explain the same points. However, I kept convincing her for days and she finally agreed to take care of the dog for half the day until I came home from school. The rest was all my responsibility.

Somehow, I also convinced my father. Since he has a liking for dogs, convincing him was not that difficult. So finally my mother had to agree. We went to a nearby pet shop and my heart went drooling over this 2 months old German shepherd who was sleeping peacefully in a small cage. I knew at once that I wanted to keep him.

Roger won everyone’s Heart

Roger was so small and cute that almost everyone in my family fell in love with it as soon as I brought him home. My mother who detested the idea of bringing a pet home also found it cute and grew fond of it over the time. Dogs love babies and are very protective about them. Roger and my younger brother thus became friends almost instantly. Super excited about including Roger in the family, I told all my friends about it the same day.

Roger has become an inseparable part of our lives today and I just love it. Dogs are really adorable. I feel that everyone should keep a pet dog.

My Pet Dog Essay for Students in English – Easy & Simple Words

January 2, 2021 by Sandeep

Essay on My Pet Dog: A dog is a man’s best friend. Its love, compassion and loyalty towards its master are unparalleled and unmatched. Pet dogs are treated as part of the family as they fill homes with happiness and joy. The strong sense of smelling and hearing is most amazing. Jumping around in the lawn, swimming in the water and playing with balls are the most beautiful traits. Barking at strangers and displaying intelligence and watchful minds are other good qualities.

Essay on My Pet Dog

Below we have provided My Pet Dog Essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

There is a saying by Dick Dale American Musician, “if you want someone to love you forever, buy a dog, feed it, and keep it around.” That’s what we followed and adopted a tiny puppy as our pet from a dog shelter. Pets are not just animals, but they manifest a lot of human qualities like compassion, care, kindness, etc. Amidst our chaos and disturbance, they help us to get away from worries and problems and create a healthy atmosphere around our lives.

They become our best friend, playful mate, and a family member by building a strong emotional bond that even a human sometimes fails to build. The three-letter word ‘Pet’ becomes a deep connection to our soul. For them, our looks, age, and money don’t matter, but our love and affection. This quality of theirs especially sets them apart from humans.

Champ – My Favourite Pet Dog

We named him Champ, a short form for champion because not only he is intelligent and brave but also can sense danger by mere hand touch. It is a golden retriever. He is blessed with a shiny coat and has plenty of hair on his body. He is a male dog and two years old. He has a cute face, soft ears, and a long tail. Every family member calls him by a different name. For my father, he is hairy, mother softy, and for my brother, he is doggo. But his response towards my call is more than anybody in the house.

Personality Traits

Being active and energetic are his effective personality features. He is an early riser and craves for a productive day rather than just playing and jumping. Morning walk is part of his daily routine, which keeps him healthy and cheerful. He always greets by licking faces and jumping on with excitement. He is friendly with kids and children and wags his tail whenever he is excited and happy.

We take him to parks where he socialises with other friends and small children. He finds amusement in playing fetch, race, and Frisbee’s. He is a complete water baby and enjoys swimming, running on sand, and having ice cream. Such outdoor activities keep him active. He seldom bites but barks only at strangers and when he is famished. He receives his vaccination once in a month and is affectionate towards his vet and takes pleasure in grooming.

As part of his hygiene, he is given bath alternate days to keep him away from germs. He displays impeccable strength, grit, and energy as he is trained in sniffing unidentified objects and undertaking particular tasks. He looks forward to his training every day and thoroughly enjoys it. Helping us in our daily chores and carrying bags when required is his essential aid as a family member.

Preferred Interests

His favourite place in the house is sitting on the sofa in the living room and one corner in my bedroom when he is scolded or warned for misbehaving. He feels discomfort when left alone in the house. He acts as an assistant to my mother and enjoys dinner with my father as he meets him only at night. Passing the time with my brother involves playing video games and barking at the strange-looking monsters in the game.

Sticky mud, winter season, and splashing in the water are his most favourites. He dislikes playing hide and sick and bathing. He devours watermelons, carrots, cakes, and cucumber. His favourites are meat chops, milk and roti, and sweet dog biscuits. He is inseparable with his favourite toy turtle. He loves watching dog shows on television and imitates the same in the house. He is glued to the television when his favourite cartoons like Doraemon and Shiva the great are aired.

500 Word Essay on My Pet Dog

From the moment I first laid eyes on that bundle of golden fur, I knew we were meant to be best friends for life. Cody, my golden retriever, has been an unconditional source of love, loyalty, and laughter for over a decade now. He is truly one of the greatest companions I could ever ask for. Cody came into my life as an 8-week-old puppy, with the most adorable teddy bear face and warm, curious eyes that could melt your heart. But don’t let that sweet look fool you – he was a rambunctious ball of energy from day one. My family and I spent months patiently potty training him, teaching him obedience commands, and redirecting his friendly puppy nipping. It was challenging but rewarding work.

As Cody grew into an adult dog, his true golden retriever personality blossomed. He is the gentlest, most affectionate creature, always eager to shower us with wet kisses and snuggle up for belly rubs at a moment’s notice. With his eternally wagging tail and bright, inviting expression, Cody makes an immediate connection with anyone he meets. One of the things I love most about golden retrievers is their eager-to-please demeanor and high intelligence. Cody lives to make his human family happy. He studies our faces and actions intently, following commands and picking up on our routines with ease. We’ve been able to train him to do all sorts of tricks and tasks – from fetching objects to cleaning up his toys to even pulling off the perfect “play dead.”

At the same time, Cody has a wonderful goofy, playful side that keeps us laughing every day. He gets intense and bouncy when he wants to play tug-of-war or fetch. He makes us chuckle by tilting his head inquisitively at new noises. And sometimes he just does silly things like drooling while he sleeps or getting the classic “zoomies” for no reason. Having a dog like Cody has been an amazing source of joy but also an incredible lesson in unconditional love, patience, responsibility, and living for each moment. Dogs don’t dwell on the past or future – they are fully present. Cody takes the good and bad of each day in stride. Even if I’m frustrated after a long workday, Cody is always ecstatic to greet me with a wagging tail when I walk through the door, his only care being that I’m home.

Cody’s deep loyalty and steadfast companionship has helped me through some tough times in life. He has an incredible intuition for emotions and always seems to know when I need an extra cuddle or kiss on a difficult day. No matter what, I know Cody’s unconditional love for me will never waver. That’s something special that every dog owner understands about the beautiful human-animal bond. After over a decade together, Cody is now an elderly dog with graying fur. But his warm, loving spirit and puppy-like zest for life remain as strong as ever. He reminds me daily to embrace each new experience with that same innocence, loyalty and joy. Cody is more than just a pet – he is a true friend for life. I feel so blessed to be able to share my life with such an amazing, loving animal.

800 Word Essay on My Pet Dog

I was walking home from class, huddled against the crisp wind, when I noticed a scruffy little dog sitting all alone under a streetlamp. His big brown eyes were wide with caution yet brimming with hope as our gazes locked. In that moment, I knew he needed me as much as I needed him. I cautiously approached, offering a few soothing words and holding out a hand to sniff. Rather than cowering or running away as I expected, the pup seemed to appraise me with wisdom beyond his years. After a moment’s pause, he tentatively nudged my hand with his cold, wet nose. My heart melted as I scooped him up into my jacket, feeling his warmth pressed against me. So began my journey with Tommy, the most remarkable indie pup I’ve ever known.

From the start, Tommy proved to be incredibly smart, obedient, and adaptable despite his life on the streets. Within a couple weeks, he had adjusted seamlessly to living indoors, grasping potty training and basic commands. But he was much more than an ordinary pup. Tommy always seemed to sense my shifting emotions, responding with the perfect mixture of playfulness, affection, and calm presence as each situation required.

His emotional intelligence allowed us to form a profound, unbreakable bond. Tommy became my shadow, greeting me with excited tail-wags and sloppy kisses whenever I walked through the door after class or work. He loved to snuggle up on my lap as I studied, seemingly content to just soak up my company and affection. During stressful periods, Tommy’s warm, grounding presence and deep brown eyes could instantly subdue my anxiety and remind me of what really mattered most. Despite being on his own at such a young age, Tommy never developed behavioral issues like excessive barking, aggression, or separation anxiety that many strays struggle with. Instead, he showered everyone he met with endless puppy energy and enthusiasm, his whole body seeming to vibrate with wriggling excitement when offered a pat or a treat. Even kids, strangers, and other pets were instantly accepted as friends in Tommy’s eyes.

As an indie mix, Tommy’s exact breed makeup was anyone’s guess. His scruffy tan and white coat gave him a coyote-like appearance. His tall, pointed ears and muscular build hinted at some terrier ancestry. But most striking were his wildly mismatched eyes – one a warm brown, the other an icy blue-gray. Whatever his origins, Tommy was simply one-of-a-kind. He loved to chase squirrels and birds into the brush, requiring me to wrestle him out of dense bushes or scale trees to retrieve my muddy, leaf-covered pup. He also had a bad habit of counter-surfing to swipe any tempting human food left unattended. More than once, I returned home to find him proudly licking his chops surrounded by a mess of scattered wrappers and crumbs.

But his best trick was his fearless composure around larger animals. Despite his small stature, Tommy never hesitated to strike up play with bigger dogs at the park or boldly approach horses. He seemed to lack any sense of self-preservation or awareness of his diminutive size. I’ll never forget the image of Tommy emphatically barking up at an enormous, bewildered draft horse while I chased him in mortified embarrassment.

As the years passed, Tommy transformed from a pup into a more dignified, albeit slightly mischievous adult dog. His protectiveness over me became more pronounced as his youthful enthusiasm mellowed slightly with age. Tommy appointed himself as a watchdog of sorts, keeping a keen eye on anyone who came by the house. Yet he never lost his loving, gentle demeanor with people and furry friends. Now Tommy has been by my side for nearly a decade, his face graying around the muzzle. With each passing year, I’m reminded how lucky I was to cross paths with this spunky, loving canine on that fateful autumn night. Tommy filled a void in my life that I never knew needed filling until he arrived.

From his endless affection and patience to his silly antics and misbehavior, Tommy has brought me more laughter, companionship, and joy than I ever could have imagined. Gazing into those mismatched but warm, trusting eyes, I know our paths were truly destined to cross that night under the streetlamp. Tommy will forever be one of the greatest gifts the universe has blessed me with – my furry little soul mate in a scruffy tan and white coat.

The Day I Lost My Pet Dog Essay:

It was a sunny summer day when my family and I went out for a picnic in the park. We had packed sandwiches, fruits, and some snacks to enjoy while we played outdoor games. My younger sister and I were excited to spend the day playing with our dog, Max.

Max was our family pet who brought so much joy into our lives. He was a golden retriever with shiny fur and bright brown eyes. He loved to play fetch, go on walks, and cuddle with us whenever he could. Max was always there for us no matter what, and we loved him more than anything in the world.

After we finished eating lunch, my sister and I decided to take Max for a walk around the park. As we were playing fetch with him, I noticed that his leash had come loose. Before I could react, Max ran off chasing a squirrel into the dense woods nearby. My heart sank as I realized he was gone.

My family and I searched for hours, calling out his name and asking people if they had seen him. But there was no sign of Max anywhere. We were devastated and didn’t know what to do. As it started getting dark, we had to go back home without our beloved pet.

The next few days were filled with sadness and worry as we continued to search for Max. We put up posters around the neighborhood and even contacted local animal shelters. But it seemed like Max had vanished without a trace.

Losing Max taught me that life is unpredictable and we should cherish every moment with our loved ones. Even though we never found him, the memories we shared will always hold a special place in our hearts. Max may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

He was not just a pet, but a member of our family who will always be missed and remembered with love. So, it’s important to appreciate and treasure the moments spent with those who mean the most to us because we never know when they might be taken away from us. Cherish your loved ones while you have them by your side.

That way, even if they’re no longer with you physically, their memory will continue to live on within you forever.

Losing Max also taught me the importance of responsible pet ownership. We should always make sure to keep our pets safe and secure, especially when in public places. As much as we may love them, they are also vulnerable creatures who rely on us for their safety and well-being.

My family and I still miss Max every day, but we have learned to cope with his loss. We know that he is now running free and happy somewhere over the rainbow bridge, looking down on us with those bright brown eyes filled with love.

Rest in peace, Max – you will always hold a special place in our hearts. So, never take your loved ones or pets for granted because you never know when you might lose them. Cherish each moment spent together and create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

Remember , love knows no boundaries and transcends time – it will always live on, even when our loved ones are no longer physically with us. So hold them close, tell them you love them, and make the most of every moment you have together.

Because in the end, those precious moments and memories are all that truly matter. Never forget to appreciate and cherish the bond between you and your loved ones, whether they have two legs or four. And always remember to keep your pets safe and secure because they are not just pets – they are a part of our family who deserve our love and protection.

In conclusion, my first pet dog was not just an ordinary animal but a beloved member of our family. Max taught me valuable life lessons and provided me with unconditional love throughout his years with us.

My Pet Dog Story

Dogs have been called ‘man’s best friend’ for a good reason. They are loyal, loving and provide companionship like no other animal can. Growing up, I had always wanted a pet dog but my parents were hesitant to get one. However, everything changed one summer day when my dad surprised me with the most adorable puppy I had ever seen – a golden retriever named Max.

Meeting Max

Max was just 6 weeks old when he came into our lives. He was a fluffy bundle of energy that immediately stole my heart. From the moment I held him in my arms, I knew we were going to be inseparable. He would follow me around everywhere, wagging his tail and giving me puppy kisses. I was overjoyed to finally have my very own pet dog.

Bonding Time

As Max grew older, we spent every waking moment together. We would take long walks in the park, play fetch with his favorite ball, and cuddle on the couch while watching TV. Max quickly became a part of our family – he had his own spot at the dinner table and even got presents on special occasions.

Adventures with Max

Max loved going on adventures and exploring new places. We would often take him hiking or camping where he could run freely and chase after butterflies. He also loved going to the beach, splashing around in the water and playing frisbee with us.

Lessons from Max

Having Max as a pet taught me many important life lessons. Most importantly, he showed me the true meaning of unconditional love and loyalty. Max was always there for me, no matter what mood I was in or how long I had been away. He never judged or held grudges – all he wanted was to make me happy.

Saying Goodbye

Sadly, after 12 wonderful years together, it was time to say goodbye to my best friend. Max had grown old and his health was deteriorating rapidly. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do but I knew it was the right thing for him. Although he may be gone physically, Max will always hold a special place in my heart.

Gizmo the dog went missing in Las Vegas in 2015. He's been found alive after 9 years

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Judith Monarrez crumpled onto her kitchen floor and wept when the news arrived in an email: Gizmo, her pet dog missing for nine years, had been found alive.

Monarrez was 28 and living with her parents in 2015 when Gizmo, then 2 years old, slipped past a faulty gate in the backyard of their home in Las Vegas.

The decade that followed brought a lot of change. Monarrez, now 37, moved into her own home, earned a master’s degree in English, and began her teaching career in higher education. But throughout the years, Monarrez said, she never stopped trying to find Gizmo.

Now, she was climbing into her car to drive across town to meet Gizmo at an animal hospital. Monarrez was later told that a woman had found the now 11-year-old dog and dropped him off at the vet, where they scanned his microchip, triggering the email notification that sent Monarrez to her knees, crying.

Within hours of receiving that email on July 17, Gizmo was back in his owner's arms. Monarrez called it “a miracle.”

“Hindsight is 2020,” she said. “I’m so glad I registered his microchip.”

Their reunion came at the same time a new Las Vegas city ordinance requiring pet owners to microchip their cats and dogs is set to take effect Aug. 1.

Monarrez said Thursday that Gizmo's first week back at home has brought mixed emotions.

It's clear, she said, that the nine years they had spent apart had changed Gizmo, too. The 8-pound Chihuahua had grown afraid of shadows, heights and birds, and Gizmo now walked with a limp. Monarrez said both of the dog's eyes were also severely infected, and some of his teeth were missing.

“Even though he looked so different, when I looked in his eyes I knew immediately it was Gizmo,” Monarrez said, recalling the moment they were reunited at the vet's office. “And as soon as I said his name, he tilted his head and he didn’t stop staring at me.”

While Monarrez and her parents can't stop thinking about what Gizmo endured after he went missing, their focus now, she said, is on addressing his health issues and “showering him with all the love that we were holding onto for all those years."

Travelling with your dog

If you're travelling internationally and returning to Canada with your dog, there are some essential steps you'll need to take.

Many countries, including Canada, have stringent requirements for dogs entering from abroad, to prevent the spread of diseases.

pet dog my dog essay

Some dog import requirements must be completed at specific times. It is your responsibility to make sure that your dog meets all the requirements and you have all the relevant documents prepared before travelling to or from Canada. If you fail to do so, your dog may be refused entry.

Long journeys can also have a serious impact on your dog's health and well-being.

On August 1, 2024, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is changing their requirements for dogs entering the U.S.

Get your dog ready to meet the new U.S. requirements.

1. Meet Canada's dog import requirements

If you're travelling to or returning to Canada with your dog, you will need to meet specific import requirements. These requirements depend on various factors, such as

  • the country of origin
  • the age of the dog
  • the purpose of the import, and
  • whether or not the dog will be accompanied by the owner to Canada

Before you plan any travel arrangements, find the requirements for your specific situation .

It is your responsibility to make sure that all the requirements are met before travelling to Canada.

If you're travelling to another country from Canada, you will also need to meet the other country's import requirements .

2. Consult a veterinarian

Talk to your veterinarian to consider the risks of travelling and confirm that your dog is healthy and has all the required tests, vaccinations and treatments to enter Canada and the country you are travelling to. Ensure that all of your dog's records are ready and up-to-date, and that the required documentation is completed.

3. Prepare for travel by air

Airlines may require additional documentation or have additional requirements when travelling with an animal by air. Check with your airline to determine what requirements are needed for your situation.

You'll also want to do some preparations in advance, such as finding the appropriately sized crate and training your dog to its new surroundings. See more detailed information on travelling by air from the International Air Transport Association.

4. Copies of the required documentation

Print out hard copies and retain digital versions of all the documents that support the necessary import requirements.

It is your responsibility to make sure that all the information in your documents is correct before travelling to or from Canada.

Dogs that don't meet the CFIA's requirements

If a dog arrives at the border and does not meet Canada's import requirements, the situation will be reviewed and a decision made regarding the animal's eligibility to enter Canada. Depending on the facts of the case and the non-compliance(s) with CFIA requirements, the animal may be ordered to be removed from Canada, fines may be applied or legal actions may be pursued.

(From left to right) Justin, Ghenghis, and Tom. Photo courtesy of subject.

M y roommate Tom and I have been living together for 11 years—a third of my life. For 10 of those 11 years, we’ve been co-parenting a dog—or, more accurately, parenting and uncle-ing. Tom is responsible for dog food and medical bills. I’m in charge of entertainment and, occasionally, dog sitting.

When Tom and I first became roommates, his dog Mingus, named after the famed jazz bassist Charles Mingus, was living out her last days. Adopting another dog right after she passed was unlikely: our living situation was already cramped, with four roommates total, three of them musicians.

But by the time Tom and I moved into our own house together, in 2014, he was ready to be a dog dad again. Tom contacted a couple on Craigslist with puppies in need of a new home, then made the 50-minute drive to a Walmart parking lot in Zebulon. That’s where he met the American Akita pup, the newest member of our emerging found family.

Ghenghis was insufferably adorable. When he arrived back in Durham, he resembled a stuffed animal toy—fluffy with big ears and a squeaker-box bark. I could almost hold him in the palms of my hands. Teenage Ghenghis quickly outgrew everything: our house in East Durham, the narrow U-shaped backyard, our tolerance for his destruction of the kitchen trash can.

Tom and I became fast friends, but we were still learning how to be roommates when Ghenghis joined the fray. Having him in our lives helped defuse some of the more difficult challenges of domestic partnership.

“Yeah, well at least I didn’t take a crap in the middle of the living room like Ghenghis! Why aren’t you yelling at him?”

As with any child, Ghenghis’s personality traits are an amalgamation of his guardians’. He is inquisitive—he gets that from both Tom and me. He’s a total goofball; that’s mostly me. He has an unexpectedly high tolerance for the summer heat—that one’s definitely me, not Tom. He has many acquaintances but keeps few friends; that is a Ghenghis original. He loves his auntie Eliza, my girlfriend, who brings him mangoes and nearly empty jars of peanut butter as special treats for keeping the house in order; that’s all of us, of course.

Ghenghis, now 10 years old—70 in dog years—is no longer a palm-sized pup. He weighs in at roughly 105 pounds and, when on his hind legs, stands at five feet tall. Like a high schooler who hit their growth spurt too fast, he moves with little self-awareness about how big he is.

In the wild, Ghenghis would be indistinguishable from a small wolf. But around the house, he’s just one of the fellas. He enjoys sitting in on Tom’s piano jam sessions or watching basketball games, hoping someone will share their evening snack with him as he nudges his way into a position where someone can pet or scratch him, no matter how inconvenient.

When it’s time for bed, Ghenghis nests in the hallway between our rooms and the front door to keep a watchful eye out for any nefarious activity on the block. The faintest unfamiliar noise outside, even if he can’t see the culprit, sets him off into a booming barrage of barks. At times, it’s paid off: a few years back, a chorus of panicked howls woke us up to the sights and sounds of S.W.A.T. officers preparing to raid the nearby home of a major drug operation.

In the mornings, Ghenghis acts as our hotel concierge, sitting at our bedroom doors and scratching until everyone in the house is up and moving. It sounds dutiful until you realize he’s just hedging his bets on who will feed him first.

Living with Tom and Ghenghis for most of my adult life has been an adventure I never would have imagined. The three of us have stayed connected through two moves and three presidents. We’ve supported each other through tough medical procedures: Ghenghis tore his ACL and suffered a snake bite to the face, Tom fractured his foot. We survived lockdown in 2020. Last fall, Tom and Ghenghis took a monthlong trip out west. The absence, both of Ghenghis and Tom, felt strange.

Growing up a “cat person” who is mildly allergic to dog hair, I was skeptical of having a dog around at the beginning. Now? I can’t imagine my life without Ghenghis. There’ve been ample opportunities to break up the band—a move to a new house, new jobs, changes in our romantic relationships. But our relationship—as brothers, as roommates, as a family—has taught me lessons that I will carry forever.

A Dog Is a Mom’s Best Friend

As mothers—and as women—we are often held to impossible standards. On Mother’s Day, we’re grateful to the pets who love us for ourselves.

a collage of a person and a dog

I found her in my mid-30s. I had just run for Congress in New York City, and lost spectacularly. Utterly humiliated, I spent most of my time alone, glued to my couch. My now-husband, Nihal, knew just how to cheer me up: we piled into a rental car, and drove to a farm in Pennsylvania.

I immediately knew she was the one: a beagle bulldog mix, seven pounds, all wrinkles and squat limbs and crooked teeth. Her soulful eyes had seen a lot in her brief lifetime, and she looked at me like she knew I had, too.

The Congressional race had left me broke, unemployed, and hardly able to afford my own life, let alone support another. But for some reason, I forked over what remained of my bank account, scooped up the dog, and home we went. I named her Stanley. It just suited her.

In the months to come, Stanley dragged me off the couch, forcing me to once again walk the streets of the city I loved. She licked the envelopes of the “I’m sorry I lost, I promise I will become something” letters I wrote to my supporters. She was utterly fearless, if a little bit shameless, unafraid to greet strangers with a goofy smile.

a dog wearing a bow tie

Stan was there to walk with me and turn the other way, when it seemed that all of New York City was just pregnant ladies pushing double-wide strollers. When I miscarried, and miscarried again, and then miscarried again, Stan was my soft tissue box, patient and still as I buried my head into her camel-colored fur and cried after receiving more bad news from the doctor. When I lay awake at night scrolling through fertility blogs, my belly bloated and sore from IVF shots, Stan was my weighted blanket, the sounds of her heavy bulldog breath eventually lulling me to a few hours of sleep. She didn’t judge me, and she certainly didn’t blame me.

When Mother’s Day rolled around year after year, and I still was not, technically, a mom, I considered that maybe Stan was my real baby. When I was with her, I would feel, however briefly, like I wasn’t a failure. To Stanley, I wasn’t a bad wife or bad candidate, bad woman or bad person. I was just Reshma. And I was loved.

a woman sitting on a couch with a dog

She didn’t even mind, as a human sibling might, when two sticky, smelly, shrieking strangers came into our lives and took my attention—some of it, anyway—away from her. When I was 39, I welcomed my son Shaan, and then, a few years later, his brother Sai. Their S names were in Stan’s honor.

Stan adjusted well: watching over the boys, playing with them, and happily taking their food. But more than anything, she was a respite from the all-encompassing exhaustion of motherhood.

In summer 2020, as I spent my days furiously paddling to keep my head above water while looking after a newborn, a toddler, and a nonprofit gutted by COVID, Stanley was my rock. She still did not judge me, even when I accidentally left her in my building’s elevator for fifteen minutes on a particularly hectic day—a sign that I needed more help than I was willing to admit, and that maybe other moms did, too.

a person holding a dog

Later that year, as COVID exposed and exacerbated the struggles of American mothers, I launched Moms First to advocate for policies like paid leave and child care. And I started to pay closer attention to the ways moms were undervalued, underestimated, and held to impossible standards.

Although long labeled a man’s best friend, really, dogs are the best friend moms deserve. Sure, they’re a good proxy for having real, human children—the expenses, the accidents, the mysterious smells. But more than any of that, when we’re faced with the pressure to be perfect—by society, and by ourselves—dogs offer us a safe place to land: the kind of unconditional love that makes us feel like we can do anything. Like we are not, as I’ve spoken about before, imposters . It’s a gift every person deserves, but women rarely receive.

More than how to care for my children, Stanley taught me how to care for myself. How, in the face of mom guilt and mom bods and mom shame and mom penalties, I could give myself grace. Not as a gift, but as a given.

a person and two children

When Stan was diagnosed with cancer last spring, I thought my world had fallen apart. The veterinarians gave her three weeks to live; she lived for eight months.

I tried, every day, to be the companion to her that she was to me: cooking her fresh food every day, sneaking her gobs of peanut butter, taking her out in the middle of the night, as many times as she needed. I’d like to think that Stanley left me when she knew I could live life without her—a nice idea that provides little relief in the face of grief.

The week Stan died, Shaan turned nine. We held his birthday party at Benihana, an establishment I will probably never be able to visit again. I was devastated, irritated, and in absolutely no mood to celebrate, let alone marvel at an onion volcano. When a child complained that they didn’t like the chocolate cake, I wanted to yell, “I don’t care! Don’t you know I’ve just lost my baby?” Instead, the kid saw my glassy eyes and settled for some plain rice.

It was, to put it lightly, not Shaan’s best birthday. Once again, I felt like a failure.

But then, I thought of Stan.

Moms, and women generally, are cut such little slack. But through those watery, sparkling, soulful eyes, Stan saw me for me. Other people loved me despite my failures—Stan didn’t even see them.

And so, I do my best to honor Stan. To accept myself entirely, even when it feels impossible. To encourage the women in my life to do the same. To get off the couch, to walk through the neighborhood, to watch women with their babies, women with their dogs. To take comfort in knowing that someone loves them unconditionally—just like Stan loved me.

As a dog lover, you want to ensure that your pup lives the longest and healthiest life possible. Eating the same dry kibble every day can make life pretty mundane for any living being. Still, it can be challenging to filter through the social media advice, ad messaging and endless claims by supposed experts. So what is the truth about canine nutrition?

We spoke with veterinarian Brian Collins, D.V.M. , at the Cornell Richard P. Riney Canine Health Center. “Feeding your dogs fresh food provides variety in their lives and is good for their mental well-being and their gut,” said Collins.

Before diving into specific foods, there are a few general guidelines dog parents should know. Beware of additives (especially xylitol), and stick with natural whole foods. Consider whether your dog has preexisting conditions, is taking medication, their size, or if your dog generally has a tough time swallowing, in which case food should be cut into smaller pieces. While there is a movement to cook for dogs, this does require the guidance of an animal nutritionist. “There is a science to ensure your dogs are getting the proper amount of carbs, protein, fat and nutrients like calcium and other vitamins and minerals,” said Collins.

Look into other ways to provide nutritional enrichment with slow-feeding puzzle bowls or toys that allow you to feed your dog whole healthy foods between meals, like frozen pupsicles. And as a general rule, when in doubt, consult your local vet!

Here are the top 10 best and worst foods for dogs, according to a veterinarian.

5 Best Foods for Dogs

Apples are a great source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, antioxidants and fiber, which are good for dogs. Be sure to cut the apple into pieces as you would for a human, and avoid feeding your dog any seeds as those can be toxic and cause gastrointestinal tract blockages.

2. Blueberries

Blueberries are high in vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals, making them a healthy choice for humans and for our canine friends. “Frozen berries can be great to cool your dog down,” said Collins. Keep a bag of organic frozen blueberries in your freezer for hot days as a sweet treat or to throw into a meal.

3. Peanut Butter

Peanuts are an excellent source of protein, and peanut butter is great for masking medication, bath time and for putting into enrichment toys. Be sure that your peanut butter is as plain as possible and free of additives like palm oil, sugar and salt. Many natural-foods stores will have machines that make peanut butter from raw unsalted peanuts.

4. Cucumber

Green veggies high in fluid content like cucumbers, green beans and zucchini are great, especially for dogs that have ravenous appetites or are trying to achieve a more healthy body weight, according to Collins. Cucumber in particular is low in calories and high in vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium and magnesium. Be sure to cut off the ends and cut the cucumber into smaller pieces to avoid choking. Some vets also advise to peel the skin.

Lean meat cooked in water or its own juices, without seasoning or excess oils and fats, is ideal. Collins encourages caution when it comes to feeding dogs bones, as hard bones can crack a dog’s teeth, get stuck in the roof of their mouth, or cause GI tract obstruction. Lean meat, such as chicken or turkey, without skin and carefully picked off the bones, tends to be a safe choice.

5 Worst Foods for Dogs

1. macadamia nuts.

Macadamia nut toxicosis is characterized by vomiting, weakness, hyperthermia and central nervous system depression. “We see a lot of dogs that have accidentally eaten macadamia nuts around the holidays,” Collins shared. If you are baking with nuts or if your dog is prone to grabbing food off a plate or table, be extra careful.

2. Grapes and Raisins

Ingesting just one grape can cause incurable kidney failure in dogs, according to Collins. If your dog has ingested a grape, raisin or foods containing those ingredients like raisin bread, contact your veterinarian or animal hospital immediately, as vets have medication that can help a dog vomit before the toxins are absorbed into the body. If you can’t get to a vet, hydrogen peroxide could work as a last resort (but check with a vet first).

3. Chocolate

Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two chemicals that affect a dog’s central nervous system and heart and act as diuretics that can cause dehydration. The darker the chocolate (the higher the cacao content), the more lethal the dose could be . This means that any foods containing caffeine, like coffee, should be avoided.

Onions, garlic, leeks and chives are all part of the Allium genus of plants, which contain N-propyl disulfides and thiosulfates that can cause damage to dogs’ red blood cells. Beware when cooking with these veggies, as a tiny piece can cause a lot of harm to pets, especially smaller dogs. And while we may not readily give these vegetables alone to our pets, they are often hidden in sauces and seasoning for meat and other foods.

5. Chewing Gum

Anything containing xylitol is highly poisonous to dogs. Even a small amount of xylitol will cause a dog’s blood sugar to plummet to dangerous levels, leading to vomiting, loss of balance, tremors and possible liver failure. “I don’t keep chewing gum in my home at all,” says Collins, who has three dogs of his own. Even if a dog doesn’t immediately show symptoms, they may need to be monitored overnight by a vet. Xylitol can be one of those sneaky additives hiding in some peanut butters and sugar-free desserts including light ice creams and baked goods.

The Bottom Line

The love we have for our canine besties knows no bounds, and maybe reading this article has given you some food for thought (pun intended). U.S. revises rules for dogs entering from rabies-free countries

There's been an update to this story. Canada's health minister says the exemption will only apply for nine months and it could be revisited by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the new year. Read the latest story here .

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control will not require Canadians to fill out long forms before crossing the border from Canada with their dogs this summer.

The agency had announced new rules in May that were aimed at keeping rabies out of the country.

They stated that dogs needed to be vaccinated against rabies and accompanied by two forms, including one signed by a veterinarian. The forms were supposed to include photos of the dog's teeth and would be verified upon arrival by border agents.

They also said dogs need to have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner — a requirement that will not change even with the move to relax some of the other stipulations.

The more stringent requirements, which were set to take effect Aug. 1, had been panned by veterinary associations, the tourism industry and the federal government in Canada.

B.C. vet says rabies concerns are valid, but new U.S. border rules are 'overkill'

Canadian officials said they were trying to secure an exemption because of Canada's status as a rabies-free country.

Last week, Health Minister Mark Holland said he had secured a partial exemption to the rules and was hopeful for a grace period. The CDC announcement Monday goes further.

"These updates incorporate the feedback received from the public, industry partners, and various countries on the dog importation rule, and clarify and simplify the processes for those bringing dogs from dog rabies-free or low-risk countries," the CDC said in a media statement on Monday.

As long as the dog has been in a low-risk or rabies-free country for the previous six months and has a microchip, it can cross the border with just an import form that can be completed online the day of travel.

If you are planning to return to Canada with your dog, there are also  rules and requirements for crossing the border  into Canada, depending on the age and purpose of the dog.

Holland said Monday that the changes came after he spoke with CDC director Mandy Cohen.

"We have arrived at a place that results in limited administrative burden on Canadians," he wrote in a statement posted on social media.

"I thank … director Cohen for her ongoing collaboration as we work to protect our countries from dog rabies."

The change has eased concerns among some advocates who were pushing for an exemption for service dogs. Michelle Barlak said there's still more work to be done.

Barlak is a public relations specialist with The Seeing Eye, a New Jersey-based non-profit that breeds and trains guide dogs and helps train guide dog handlers, including handlers from Canada.

A yellow lab in a service dog vest lies alert on a porch.

The Seeing Eye was part of a group of advocacy organizations in the U.S. that has been hounding the CDC to make an exemption for service dogs and their handlers.

"Unfortunately, the CDC dog import form, which is still required in all cases, is inaccessible to those using screen readers to access the page," she said in an email on Monday. The original CDC form also was not accessible to people using screen readers.

Barlak also noted that handlers from high-risk rabies countries will still have to meet the original requirements on Aug. 1.

The CDC's list of countries that are considered high risk for rabies includes a number of popular vacation destinations such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Thailand and Vietnam.

Without an exemption, any service dog handler who has travelled to one of those countries in the previous six months would have to jump through the CDC's hoops with longer forms and sign-off from a vet before heading to the United States, even if they live in Canada or another rabies-free country.

In an interview Thursday before the changes were announced, the Seeing Eye's Melissa Allman said she was frustrated that the CDC has not been responsive to concerns about how the changes would affect service dog handlers.

"I think that it is an erosion of our rights that we've worked very hard to create and uphold and protect since our founding in 1929," said Allman, who is a guide dog handler and the organization's advocacy and government relations specialist.

"Here I am in a position where I'm supposed to advocate for the rights of people and I feel like I have to tell people, 'Sorry, things are not as good as they were."'

Corrections

  • A previous version of this story said the revised U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) orders only require dog owners to complete an import form when crossing the border with a dog older than six months. In fact, the dog must also have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner. Jul 25, 2024 11:19 AM ET
