General Structure of a Finance Dissertation
It is crucial to consult your supervisor regarding your dissertation’s research methodology, structure, style, and reasonable length. Depending on the guidance of your supervisor, the structure may vary. Nonetheless, as a general guide, ensure the following sections are part and parcel of your dissertation:
- Introduction: State the problem that you intend to address in your dissertation. It also includes a definition of key terms, the relevance of the topic and a summary of hypotheses.
- Theoretical and empirical literature, hypotheses development and contribution: It provides the theoretical framework of your study. The hypotheses are based on the literature review.
- Data and methodology: State the model (i.e. dependent and key independent variables) that you want to use the drawing on theoretical framework or economic argument that you may employ for your analysis. Define all control variables and describe the data used to test the hypothesis.
- Empirical results: Describe the results and mention whether they are consistent with the hypotheses and relate them with the existing evidence in the literature. You will also describe the statistical and practical/economic significance of your findings.
- Summary and conclusion: Summarize your research and state the general conclusion with relevant implications.
It is important to have all the dataset you want to use readily available before finalizing the topic. The dataset is essential for testing your hypotheses.

How To Write A Finance Thesis (With Free Topics)
The word “thesis” can evoke a range of emotions in a finance student – excitement, trepidation, and perhaps even a healthy dose of imposter syndrome. This guide is your roadmap to writing a stellar finance thesis. Before reading this, make sure that you know whether you are writing a dissertation or a thesis .
Table of Contents
What Is A Finance Thesis
A finance thesis is an academic document that explores a specific topic within the field of finance in a detailed and comprehensive manner. It is a substantial piece of scholarly work typically required as part of an advanced degree program, such as a master’s or a Ph.D. in finance or a related discipline.
The primary purpose of a finance thesis is to demonstrate the author’s understanding of financial concepts, theories, and methodologies, as well as their ability to conduct original research and contribute new insights to the field.
Structure Of A Finance Thesis
A finance thesis follows a typical research paper format but with an in-depth analysis of each section. Here are the elements that you must include in your finance thesis.
Introduction
To captivate your audience from the outset, begin with a compelling hook that sparks interest in your finance thesis. This could be a thought-provoking statistic, a relevant anecdote, or a compelling question. By engaging readers early on, you set the tone for an impactful thesis.
Following the hook, provide a brief but comprehensive overview of the background and context of your finance thesis. Explain the relevance of your chosen topic. This section serves as a foundation for readers, ensuring they understand the context before delving into the specifics of your research.
Introducing The Thesis Statement
The crux of your introduction lies in presenting a clear and concise thesis statement . Articulate the main argument or hypothesis of your finance thesis. Ensure that it is specific, focused, and indicative of the direction your research will take. This roadmap prepares your readers for the journey they are about to embark on throughout the remainder of your thesis.
Literature Review
In the literature review section, write about the existing body of knowledge related to your finance thesis. Provide a comprehensive review of relevant literature, identifying key theories, concepts, and empirical studies. Demonstrate your understanding of the current state of research in your chosen area and highlight any gaps or unresolved questions that your thesis aims to address.
- Identify key academic journals and publications in your field.
- Critically analyze relevant research papers , and understand their methodologies and findings.
- Build upon existing research by identifying gaps or proposing alternative approaches.
- Take meticulous notes and maintain proper citation practices.
Methodology
Clearly articulate the methods and procedures employed in your research. Detail the rationale behind your chosen methodology, whether it involves quantitative or qualitative approaches, surveys, case studies, or a combination.
By providing a transparent account of your research design, you establish credibility and enable others to replicate or validate your findings.
Present the findings of your research in a systematic and organized manner. Use tables, graphs, and charts to illustrate key data points. Ensure that the results align with your research questions and hypotheses .
This section should be objective, presenting the outcomes without interpretation or analysis—save that for the next section.
Engage in a critical analysis and interpretation of your results in the discussion section. Relate your findings to the existing literature and theories. Address any unexpected results and explore their implications.
Consider the limitations of your study and propose avenues for future research. This section is where you showcase your analytical skills and contribute to the scholarly conversation in your field.
Summarize the key points of your thesis, emphasizing the significance of your findings in the broader context of finance research. Revisit your thesis statement and demonstrate how your research has contributed to the understanding of the topic. Leave your readers with a lasting impression and a sense of closure.
Abstract And Acknowledgments
Craft a concise yet informative abstract that provides a snapshot of your entire finance thesis, including the research question, methods, results, and conclusions. In the acknowledgment section, acknowledge the contributions of others who have supported and influenced your research journey.
Express gratitude for mentorship, guidance, and any financial or logistical assistance received during the thesis process.

Important Notes
As a finance and accounting student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing finance and accounting theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.
The finance and accounting field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like civil engineering , construction , law , engineering management , healthcare , mental health , artificial intelligence , tourism , physiotherapy , sociology , management , project management , and nursing . That is why it is imperative to create a project management dissertation topic that is particular and sound and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.
We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong: your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.
This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation as you may end up in a cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.
Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best finance and accounting dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.
Therefore, it is recommended that when finalising your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.
Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample finance and accounting dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Angel City Football Club: A New Business Model for Women’s Sports
Angel City Football Club (ACFC) was founded in 2020 by venture capitalist Kara Nortman, entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, and actor and activist Natalie Portman. As outsiders to professional sports, the all-female founding team had rewritten the playbook for how to build a sports franchise by applying lessons from the tech and entertainment industries. Unlike typical sports franchises that built their teams and track records over many years before extending their brand beyond a local base, ACFC had inverted the model, generating both global and local interest in the club during its first three years. The club’s early success was reflected in its market valuation of $250 million as of its sale in July 2024 — the highest in the National Women’s Soccer League. Equally important, ACFC had started to bend the curve toward greater pay equity in women’s sports — the club’s ultimate goal. But the founders knew there was much more to do to capitalize on the club’s momentum. As they developed ACFC’s first three-year strategic plan in 2024, they weighed the most effective ways to build value for the franchise. Was it better to allocate the incremental budget to investments in digital brand building or to investments in the on-field product? Senior Lecturer Jeffrey Rayport is joined by case co-author Nicole Keller and club co-founder Kara Nortman to discuss the case, “Angel City Football Club: Scoring a New Model.”

It’s difficult to come up with anything unique and interesting. There are, nevertheless, ways to come up with interesting ideas. Here are a few pointers on how to locate them:
- Read a fantastic finance dissertation and find for areas where further study is needed.
- Go to the library and read a couple theses to get some ideas.
- Inquire with a writing agency about some ideas from one of their professional dissertation writers.
- In writing forums and blogs, ask for assistance. If you ask gently, people will give you some excellent suggestions.
- Look for ideas on the internet, but don’t use them exactly as they are. Make them distinctive by changing them.
- Talk to other students who are working on their dissertations and find out what other ideas they had before settling on the present topic.
- Narrow down your topic : Your financial topic should be narrowed down to a certain niche. It should concentrate on a single area, such as microfinance, microfinance, or online banking.
- Verify your facts: Finance is a topic that requires a great deal of logical analysis of statistical data. As a result, double-check facts and statistics using credible sources before using them in your paper.
- Write concisely: You should condense a financial paper into a tight, succinct work, unlike other papers with extended narrative narratives. At this length, the adage of ‘short is sweet’ theoretically applies.
- Arrange your data neatly: A report that is crammed with numbers and graphs may turn off a reader at first glance. Know how and when to utilise your data for a great financial thesis.
- Write simply: Avoid using jargon that might be confusing to a non-technical reader. When technical terminology are required, utilise accessible examples to convey them. In a finance dissertation, simplicity is king. So make good use of it.

Whether your focus is on capital structure, mergers and acquisitions, financial innovation, or sustainable finance, these topics provide a solid foundation for academic research. By selecting a topic aligned with your academic and career interests, you can contribute valuable insights to the corporate finance landscape and develop a thesis that reflects the complexities of the modern financial environment.
The Range of Corporate Finance Thesis Topics
Corporate finance is a vital branch of financial management that deals with how companies make financing, investment, and capital structure decisions to maximize shareholder value. The field of corporate finance spans various subtopics, such as mergers and acquisitions, dividend policy, capital structure, risk management, and sustainable finance. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that organizations allocate financial resources efficiently, manage risks effectively, and capitalize on opportunities to grow and innovate. For students studying corporate finance, selecting the right thesis topic can provide insights into pressing issues, recent trends, and future directions within this complex field. This article explores the range of corporate finance thesis topics that can help students develop impactful research, focusing on current issues, recent innovations, and future directions in the discipline.
Current Issues in Corporate Finance
One of the most enduring topics in corporate finance is capital structure —the mix of debt and equity that companies use to finance their operations. The decision to raise capital through equity or debt financing remains central to corporate finance strategy, as the wrong capital structure can increase a firm’s risk or limit its growth opportunities. Topics such as “The Impact of Capital Structure on Corporate Financial Performance” or “Debt vs. Equity Financing: Which Is Optimal for High-Growth Companies?” allow students to explore how firms make these decisions based on their financial conditions and market environment. Additionally, the impact of capital structure on a company’s valuation and overall financial health remains an ongoing concern for researchers and finance professionals.
Another important area in corporate finance is corporate governance . Good corporate governance practices ensure that companies act in the best interests of shareholders while maintaining transparency, accountability, and ethical standards. In recent years, corporate scandals and governance failures have highlighted the importance of strong governance structures. Topics like “The Role of Corporate Governance in Enhancing Financial Performance” or “How Corporate Governance Practices Influence Financial Decision-Making” are relevant for students looking to explore how companies can strengthen governance mechanisms to mitigate risks and improve their financial outcomes.
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) represent another crucial aspect of corporate finance, as they are commonly used by firms to achieve growth, expand market share, or gain strategic advantages. However, M&A activities are not without risks, as post-merger integration, cultural differences, and synergies can make or break deals. Thesis topics such as “The Impact of Mergers and Acquisitions on Shareholder Value” or “Post-Merger Integration: Financial and Operational Challenges” provide ample opportunity for research on the complexities of these deals and their financial consequences.
Recent Trends in Corporate Finance
In recent years, sustainable finance has become a significant trend within the corporate finance landscape, driven by the growing recognition that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors can have a material impact on financial performance. Investors are increasingly considering ESG factors when making investment decisions, and companies are integrating sustainability into their financial strategies to attract investment and improve their long-term resilience. Topics such as “The Role of ESG Factors in Corporate Financial Performance” or “How Green Bonds Are Shaping Corporate Financing Strategies” allow students to investigate how firms balance financial goals with environmental and social responsibilities.
Another emerging trend is digital transformation , which is reshaping the way corporate finance functions operate. Automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics are revolutionizing financial decision-making by enabling companies to analyze large datasets, forecast financial trends, and improve efficiency. Topics like “The Impact of Digital Transformation on Corporate Financial Strategy” or “How AI and Big Data Are Transforming Corporate Financial Management” provide students with an opportunity to explore how technology is changing traditional financial practices, making operations more efficient, data-driven, and responsive to market conditions.
Financial innovation , driven by the rise of financial technology (Fintech), is another major trend in corporate finance. Fintech solutions, such as blockchain technology, peer-to-peer lending, and crowdfunding, are giving companies new tools to raise capital, manage risks, and optimize financial transactions. These technologies have the potential to disrupt traditional corporate finance models. Thesis topics such as “How Blockchain Technology Is Transforming Corporate Financing Models” or “The Role of Fintech in Corporate Financial Innovation” allow students to explore how financial innovations are reshaping capital markets and corporate financial strategies.
Future Directions in Corporate Finance
As the corporate finance field continues to evolve, several future directions will present valuable opportunities for academic research. One of the most promising areas is the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in corporate financial management. AI-driven tools are revolutionizing tasks such as financial forecasting, budgeting, and risk management. By analyzing vast datasets and identifying trends, AI can provide insights that help companies make more accurate and informed financial decisions. Thesis topics such as “The Role of AI in Corporate Financial Forecasting” or “How Machine Learning Is Enhancing Corporate Risk Management” provide students with the chance to explore the cutting-edge applications of AI in finance.
Sustainability and climate risk will also play a significant role in shaping the future of corporate finance. Companies that fail to address environmental and social risks may face higher financing costs, reduced access to capital, and reputational damage. As investors increasingly demand sustainable practices, firms will need to integrate sustainability into their corporate finance strategies. Topics such as “The Impact of Climate Risk on Corporate Financial Strategy” or “How Sustainability Initiatives Are Reshaping Capital Structure Decisions” offer students the opportunity to explore how environmental factors are influencing corporate decision-making.
Additionally, fintech innovations such as blockchain, decentralized finance (DeFi), and digital currencies are expected to continue transforming corporate finance. As these technologies mature, they will likely disrupt traditional financing models and capital markets. Blockchain, in particular, has the potential to streamline corporate financial transactions by eliminating intermediaries, reducing costs, and improving transparency. Topics like “The Role of Blockchain in Enhancing Corporate Financial Transparency” or “How Digital Currencies Are Influencing Corporate Treasury Management” provide students with an opportunity to explore the future of corporate finance in a rapidly digitizing world.
Finally, globalization and geopolitical risks will remain important considerations in corporate finance. Companies operating in international markets must navigate complex geopolitical environments, trade policies, and currency fluctuations. The interconnectedness of global financial markets makes firms vulnerable to disruptions in one region that can quickly spread across the globe. Thesis topics like “The Role of Globalization in Corporate Capital Structure Decisions” or “How Geopolitical Risks Influence Corporate Financial Performance” allow students to explore the global aspects of corporate finance and how companies manage risks in an increasingly interconnected world.
The field of corporate finance continues to evolve, offering a broad range of topics for academic research. From exploring current issues like capital structure and corporate governance to investigating recent trends in sustainable finance and digital transformation, students have a wide array of topics to choose from when developing their corporate finance thesis. Moreover, future directions such as AI integration, blockchain technology, and climate risk management present exciting opportunities for students to contribute valuable insights to the discipline. Selecting a topic that aligns with their academic interests and career goals will enable students to produce impactful research that addresses the challenges and opportunities facing the corporate finance world today.
