Introduction, adopting a pet.

Human beings have always been viewed as social creatures and their interaction with others plays a very pivotal role in their personal growth and development. Our intense need to feel some warmth and connection is, therefore, necessary for a balanced life. It is for this reason that we surround ourselves with friends and socialize with other members of society. However, one cannot always count on his fellow human beings to be available to provide companionship and the feeling of warmth. One can on the other hand be relatively certain that his pets will be there to provide some form of companionship when he needs it. It is with these undertones that I shall set out to talk about the pet that I would prefer to adopt. I shall also aim to positively influence my friend to adopt a pet for herself as well.

My pet of choice is a dog, an animal that I have always been fond of since I was a little girl. Dogs have always been tagged as “man’s best friend” mostly due to their loyalty and sometimes affectionate nature. My main attraction to the dog as my pet of choice is the companionship attribute as well as the loyalty that seems to be innate in all breeds of dogs. While I do reside with a significant other, my house tends to get eerily quiet at times and it is in my hope that a pet dog will dispense of this and bring in some warmth. The playful nature of the dog will also ensure that I am preoccupied with a significant part of my evenings thereby helping me to relax by taking my mind off the stresses of the day.

Bricklin(1999) asserts that caring for a pet is a significant commitment and as such, one has to be willing to keep regular hours, spend time caring for the animal and also invest a significant amount of money in the animal’s health and food costs. While I will be able to cater adequately to my pet’s health and food needs, my busy daily schedule leaves me with little time to spare. As a result of this, it would make sense for me to chose a pet dog that does not require too much attention and one whose maintenance is not too involving. The particular dog that I intend to get is the Maltese Dog. Unlike other dog breeds that shed their fur frequently and in substantial quantities, the Maltese Dog breed sheds only sparingly, therefore, making it an ideal pet for me as it requires little effort cleaning after. Additionally, the Maltese are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed which means that I will not have to worry about my friends developing allergic reactions as a result of exposure to my new pet.

As can be alluded from the discussion above, a pet would be a valuable addition to you Susan, my long term friend and neighbor. However, I do concede that my needs and your needs are different, and for example, you already have children and therefore do not lack warmth or laughter in your house. I, therefore, recognize that you would require a different appeal to invest in a pet. For a person with a family like you, a pet would an ideal play partner for your kids. This would not only keep your children fully engaged while you undertake other issues but it would also bring joy and keep entertained your active children.

Another advantage of having a pet dog is that since it requires regular exercise, you as the owner will be obliged to take it for regular walks. In the modern-day that we live in, we are mostly so hard-pressed with issues both at work and at home that we forfeit the very important task of looking after our bodies by regularly exercising. As such, a pet will be beneficial to you as well since you will be exercising even as you engage in regular walks. In my opinion, a pet can indeed be the anchor that keeps us from drifting into the sea of unfitness.

Having decided on what pet to adopt, the question arises as to where to get the physical pet from. According to the Humane Society of the United States (2009), an organization that facilitates the adoption of animals from animal shelters and rescue groups, adopting a pet from a shelter is more advantageous than buying one from a pet store or breeder. When you get your pet from a shelter or rescue group, it will be at a lower cost than if you were to buy it from a pet store. The pet is also more likely to have been vaccinated and de-wormed therefore ensuring that you obtain a healthy pet for yourself (Bricklin, 1999).

In this paper, I set out to identify the pet I plan on adopting and further discuss the reasons as to why it would be my ideal pet. To this end, I have identified a Maltese Dog, a small affectionate dog, as my pet of choice. I then proceeded to discuss the implications that having a pet might carry. Additionally, I have set out to persuade my friend to adopt a pet for herself as well. From this paper, it is clear that adopting a pet is a significant issue and as such, one should take their time when choosing the perfect pet. One should then provide a loving and safe environment for the pet and having done so, you can be assured that the pet will reciprocate by being a dependable and loyal addition to your house.

Pet adoption is a lifesaving and heart-expanding endeavor. And there are so many rewards of adopting a pet, including saving the life of a homeless pet and providing them with love and companionship, addressing community issues such as cat and dog overpopulation, and making room for shelters and rescue groups to save more pets.

When you adopt a pet , you are also doing your part to put an end to puppy mills and other inhumane breeding practices where animals often live in cramped conditions without much quality of life. Backyard breeders and pet mills are notorious for overbreeding dogs. And some cat breeders have also been found to have mill-like conditions, where adult animals are bred over and over for the sole purpose of churning out pets for sale.

Adopting a pet can also positively impact a person’s life, and the physical and mental health benefits of having a pet are worth noting. More exercise, play, and outdoor time can improve a person’s mood and increase their socialization as they meet other people (and pets) on daily walks. In addition, an increase in exercise through daily walking can improve physical fitness and health conditions. Plus, a pet can provide friendship and companionship that can help with loneliness and depression.

If you can’t adopt a pet right now, you can still reap these benefits. There are plenty of dogs, cats, and other pets at animal shelters and rescue groups who need daily walks and attention.

As you can see, there are countless reasons for pet adoption — and there are many homeless dogs and cats in shelters and rescue groups across the country who need a loving home. These animals are deserving of our love, attention, and care. And their benefits for us abound as well.

When you adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue organization instead of buying a pet, you are providing a home for a pet in need and freeing up space for more animals to be saved. Every day, dogs and cats are killed in America’s shelters simply because they don’t have safe places to call home. That means when you adopt an animal, you are gaining a loving companion and saving a life at the same time.

By adopting a pet, you’re also taking a stand against puppy mills, which are cruel, inhumane factory farms for dogs where quick profits take precedence over the well-being, health, and security of the animals.

Puppy mill dogs live in cramped quarters, and female dogs are bred continuously to produce as many puppies as possible to turn a quick profit for the retail pet trade. Ultimately, the focus is on money and not on the welfare of the animals.

While more and more Americans oppose this inhumane practice, there are still thousands of puppy mills in existence in this country today. Many people don’t realize that when they buy a dog online or from a pet store, that dog might have come from a puppy mill. Adopting a pet is a lifesaving alternative and a wonderful way to protest pet mills and advocate for animals.

Animal adoption has also become more affordable (thanks to reduced fees and free adoption events) and accessible. These days, adoptable animals are easy to find on websites like Petfinder and Adopt a Pet , which feature pets in shelters and rescue groups around the U.S. There are also plenty of other online resources where you can adopt a pet near you , searching from the comfort of your home.

The cost to acquire and care for a dog or cat is worth considering. Buying a pet can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars while adoption is generally cheaper, and there could be additional veterinary costs associated with animals who come from a pet store or breeder. For example, because puppy mills cut corners on health and welfare, dogs purchased from such a facility often end up with health problems.

If you are looking for a specific breed of dog, you don’t have to shop for one. There are breed-specific rescue groups all around the U.S. that specialize in the kind of dog you want whom you can adopt. You can also adopt a purebred dog at a shelter .

Furthermore, many animal shelters and rescue groups spay or neuter their dogs and cats before their adoption, as well as vaccinate and microchip their animals. This can mean hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in additional savings when you adopt a pet as opposed to buying one.

Pet adoption saves lives, and it frees up space in shelters so more lives can be saved. It is also the more ethical, thoughtful, and caring way to bring a pet into your life.

Moreover, pets can provide value to their family and community as emotional support animals and therapy pets. They can help people with a host of conditions, including diabetes, autism, cancer, and PTSD. And they can visit people at homes, hospitals, nursing homes, care facilities, schools, and throughout the community. In addition, rescuing animals can be a great tool for parents to teach their children about responsibility; animal care; and the necessity for routine healthy nutrition, exercise, and playtime.

A rescued pet can also reduce stress and anxiety . For instance, studies have shown that eye contact with your dog can release oxytocin — known as the love hormone — which can relieve both anxiety and depression.

In a report on the power of pets, the National Institutes of Health said that interacting with animals can lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that pets can improve overall heart health and reduce the risk of certain heart-related diseases.

A rescued pet also can give a person a renewed sense of purpose and provide them with unconditional love. Dogs and cats are incredible companions, and they really have a positive impact on our overall health and well-being.

Why is shopping for a pet bad?

When people adopt a pet, they are saving a life. When they buy a pet, a homeless pet misses out on the chance at a loving home. And buying pets supports an industry that thrives on disregarding the welfare of animals.

Puppy and kitten mills (which sell to pet stores) are in business to make a profit, so they churn out puppies and kittens as fast as they can. These animals are often in ill health and have problems, such as poor socialization skills due to a lack of human companionship and genetic defects due to inbreeding.

This inhumane breeding and selling of animals through pet stores and in classified ads has been going on for decades. Breeders have also headed online. They sell dogs and cats — born and bred in cruel conditions — through social media channels, in online neighborhood groups, and through online classifieds.

The minimal standards imposed on breeders by the federal government don't promote responsible breeding or ensure healthy puppies and kittens. These government standards also do not address quality of life for the animal; rather, they are about the bare minimum of care. For example, it is perfectly legal for a licensed breeder to own 1,000 or more dogs, keep those dogs confined for the entirety of their lives in small cages, and breed them as often as possible. There are also only a handful of inspectors in each state for all of the state's licensed breeding facilities.

Most puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills, and most websites that sell dogs are selling mill-bred pets. It is also important to note that most of these sites market their pets as being well-bred and lovingly raised. Be alert to ads that list several breeds of dogs for sale. It is also a bad sign if a breeder won't let you come visit the pet so that you can see where the animal lives and how they’ve been raised and cared for.

The best way to safeguard against supporting a puppy or kitten mill is never to buy an animal from a pet store or online and instead adopt a dog or cat from a shelter or animal rescue group. Do note though that some pet stores have dogs and cats who are available for adoption through shelters or rescue groups.

Factors to consider before adopting a pet

Whether you head to your local shelter or a rescue group to adopt a dog, cat, bird, or other animal, think about the kind of pet who will be the best match for you, your family, your lifestyle, and even your energy level and health.

For instance, if you have a lot of time and patience and are willing to dedicate yourself to training a dog, then adopting a puppy might be a good fit. On the other hand, you might consider a more relaxed animal — e.g., an older dog or cat — if you want a slower pace of life. Either way, animal shelters and pet rescue groups have lots of cats, kittens, puppies, dogs, and other animals to choose from.

Adopting a pet is a decision that must be taken seriously. Pets need daily social interaction, play, exercise, training, financial support for vet bills and routine medical care, food, toys, supplies, and even pet-sitting and lodging expenses should you go out of town.

You also need to consider the temperament of the pet and how the animal will get along with other household pets or pets in your community. Some animals need time and training to be well-mannered around people and other pets while others are polite social butterflies. Animal shelters and rescue groups sometimes list their pets’ temperament and activity level on their adoption profiles, which can be helpful information for your search to adopt a pet.

Where you live is also a factor to consider in pet adoption. For instance, if you’re considering a high-energy dog, make sure you have ample space for the dog to run and play and a neighborhood where you can take them for long walks. Low-energy pets who need less activity time might be better suited for smaller spaces.

Advocating for pets

You can advocate for pets and protest puppy mills through a host of puppy mill initiatives from Best Friends Animal Society. Animal adoption is a lifesaving act that gives pets second chances and happy homes. Last year alone, around 400,000 dogs and cats were killed in our nation's shelters just because they didn’t have safe places to call home. But it doesn't have to be that way. An estimated 17 million people will add a new pet to their family this year. If more of them would choose to adopt a pet instead of buying one, we could bring every community across this country to no-kill.

Whether you adopt a dog or cat from your municipal shelter or an animal rescue group, there are so many animals of all sizes, breeds, types, and ages in need of a loving home. You can also help curtail animal overpopulation issues in your community and the killing of animals in shelters when you adopt a pet instead of buying a pet. Animal adoption also means addressing issues related to puppy mills and inhumane breeding facilities.

By saying no to shopping for a pet and saying yes to animal adoption, you’re giving a voice to animals in need around the U.S., and you're being part of the incredible movement to Save Them All .

You also have to decide on which animal you want to bring to your home. You must surely be aware of the commitment you are about to make.

When adopting a dog, there are a lot of issues to reflect on, but following some uncomplicated steps one will be able to make a choice that will give rise to an exceptional friendship that will hopefully persist for years to come. It is important to think about such aspects as what breed of dog you’d prefer to have, which one will be most appropriate considering your individuality and way of life; how much room you can provide for your new pet; would you like to have a young or an adult dog.  You also have to consider how the chosen breed will interrelate with your family or other pets in the house in case you have any.

Kittens are no less wonderful pets than dogs are. Nevertheless, potential owners also need to be ready for the little one’s arrival, and should as well follow some procedures when adopting a cat. When making choice consider whether the kitten is old enough to be separated from mother. Pay attention to the cat’s physical form. The animal should be active, attentive and playful. The potential proprietor should check whether his house is well prepared for a pet’s arrival. Cats are renowned for their passion of investigating each corner of the premise, so one has to make sure that way behind counters and access to domestic device is blocked and bare outlets are covered.

A visit to the veterinarian is the final stage of adopting a pet process. New pet owner should always ask the previous owner whether cat or dog has had any shots, and demand the veterinary records if these are obtainable. One has to necessarily take the pet to the vet, and take care of its being vaccinated, spayed or neutered, if this has not been done previously.

The project was a huge success and McKinney told us both she and the animal shelter hope to continue this as an ongoing project. It keeps students engaged in the lesson while benefiting animals in need of a home.

Adopting a Pet from the Pound

Owning a pet from the pound or Animal Rescue League has many advantages. First of all, a child feels good about rescuing an abandoned or abused animal and giving it a whole new life. Besides, if the animals from the pound aren’t adopted right away, they might be put to sleep. Having a pet also means lots of responsibilities. A child has to feed, clean up after, brush, and exercise the pet.

Another great advantage of having a pet from the pound is the price of these cute and cuddly animals. Pets from the pound cost a lot less than pets at a fancy pet store, which can cost hundreds of dollars.

Once you adopt a pet from the Animal Rescue League, it will quickly become a part of your family. If you are thinking of adopting a pet, you might consider choosing a dog or a cat. Dogs and cats can bring lots of happy times to a family, and they can be excellent companions for a person who lives alone or someone who has lost a loved one. Dogs are also a wonderful source of protection. Cats are funny, and they may help to calm people down when they are sad or mad.

Please consider adopting an animal. If you remember all of the advantages of adopting a pet from the pound, you might find the bird, mouse, hamster, dog, or cat of your choice.

It's a great time to adopt a dog or cat from a Jersey Shore animal shelter. Here's why

If you're looking for a sign to adopt that pet you've been wanting, this is it. National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, which is Tuesday, April 30, encourages rescuing pets from licensed shelters.

With around 6.3 million pets entering government-approved shelters every year, these nonprofit organizations are plagued with overcrowding, and struggle to obtain enough resources, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The New Jersey Department of Health recommends participating in the holiday, if you're ready to bring a new companion into your home.

“Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is a great reminder to residents that many loving animals of all ages are available at their local shelters and pounds, and in need of a good home,” said former health commissioner Judith Persichilli in a 2023 release. “There are many health benefits of pet ownership, including regular exercise, and pets also provide companionship.”

The release also states that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies have shown the bond between people and pets is linked to other benefits, such as improved heart health, decreased stress, loneliness and anxiety — as well as increased opportunities for exercise and being outdoors.

These local shelters have cats and dogs that would love to come home with you. Some of them are also hosting special events.

Ocean County Animal Facilities (North and South)

Both the Northern Ocean County Animal Facility in Jackson, and the Southern Ocean County Animal Facility in Manahawkin, will be hosting events on April 30.

From 1 to 4 p.m., both locations will be offering half price adoptions, and every adopted animal goes home with a goodie bag full of toys and treats. The adoption fee for dogs during the celebration is $30; for cats and kittens it's $27.50.

All animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, and have received a general health exam by the shelter veterinarian.

One pet you can find at the Southern facility is Oreo , a 1 year-old Boxer-mix who is good with kids, enjoys car rides, and is "incredibly friendly." He does better in a home without other pets. He's also house-trained, and knows certain commands like "sit" and "come."

Some other pets available at the Manahawkin facility are 4-year-old Luna , a tri-color, female Staffordshire Bull Terrier who loves walks; and Shiloh , a Tabby female Domestic Shorthair cat with beautiful eyes.

At the Jackson facility, you can meet Lola , a 2-to-3-year old female Labrador/Pit Bull mix who'd love an active family with older children; and Tara , a calm, 1-year-old Domestic Shorthair, female cat.

While this shelter does not have anything currently planned for the holiday, they have plenty of animals available for adoption.

"We are just doing our best to get people to come in," Executive Director Laurie Fasinski said. "Dog adoptions are especially slow, and this is not just us, this is everywhere, every state."

"Things are so slow and just dreadful for all homeless animals that we know that every day should be Adopt a Shelter Pet Day."

One young dog up for adoption is Ruby , a hound mix/Carolina Dog who has been at the shelter for a year. She would love to show someone who gives her a loving home endless love and loyalty. Another is Martha , a 3-year-old Torti cat who loves to shower people with love and purrs. She hopes to find a home where she is an only pet, and where she will not have to spend any more time in a cage.

Other events and shelters to visit

All Fur One Pet Rescue and Adoptions will be celebrating on Saturday, May 18, with two special events: a "Kitten Shower," to view their available kittens at the shelter from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a dog showcase the same day at Toms River's Raven Ink Tattoo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Plenty of pets will be showcased, including dogs like Jasper , Dany , Fred and Billy , and cats like Penny , Pam , Cookie and Jim (all of which can be seen in the gallery above). The Monmouth County SPCA will be hosting a Dog Walk and Pet Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, in Eatontown's Leon Smock 80 Acre Park. All dogs must be registered at classy.org/event/2024-dog-walk-and-pet-fair/e571399 . Adoptable pets will be available for viewing, like Gracie , a 9-year-old Pit Bull mix who is trained and friendly. Shelters vs. 'puppy mills'

Buying a pet from an animal shelter is very different from buying one at a pet store, experts say. In December 2022, New York , Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation prohibiting pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits. The law, which takes effect in December 2024, was created in an effort to end the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline and  stop abusive commercial breeders .

And New Jersey may be next. State Sens. Brian Stack and Raj Mukherji, both D-Hudson, and Assemblywomen Shama A. Haider, D-Bergen, and Luanne M. Peterpaul, D-Monmouth, introduced legislation that will prohibit the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet shops, "effectively cutting off the cruel puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline," they said in a news release.

The lawmakers said recent public records obtained by the Humane Society of the United States are evidence of the urgent need for their legislation to move forward. The records "show that thousands of weeks-old puppies have been trucked to New Jersey pet stores from massive Midwest puppy mills that keep dogs in conditions no New Jerseyan would knowingly support."

The legislation is backed by animal welfare organizations, humane pet stores, veterinarians, and cities and counties across the state, lawmakers said.

"When you adopt a dog [from a shelter," said Fasinski of the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter in Brick, "you are most likely saving its life — and another life as you are making space for another to get help."

Family Saw 1 Last Shelter Dog When Looking To Adopt—and the Rest Is History

A shelter has shared the heartwarming tale of how a dog, who was the last pooch her family considered for adoption, became an irreplaceable part of their lives.

Beppy's shelter journey began at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society in Alabama on November 9, 2021, where she arrived as a stray. She was transferred to the Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) in Wisconsin on December 16, 2021, where she found her forever home right away.

Beppy was nearly overlooked as she was the last pet the family saw on their shelter visit.

"She was the last dog we looked at when we visited the shelter," her family told Newsweek . "We just went to look, we didn't plan on adopting a dog. She had just been transferred from Alabama that same day. We fell in love instantly."

Falling in love with her at first sight, the family wasted no time bringing Beppy into their lives, and she slotted right in.

A friendly yet shy pup, the staff at DCHS were far from surprised when Beppy found her home so quickly.

"Upon arrival, she received a medical exam from DCHS veterinarians, during which she was friendly and affectionate," Lisa Bernard, the PR coordinator at DCHS told Newsweek . "All dogs also are assessed by DCHS's Canine Behavior Team, which noted she can be a little shy."

Beppy's endearing qualities shone through, making her an irresistible choice for adoption. Described as friendly, playful, and a lover of cuddles, Beppy quickly became a beloved member of her new family.

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet "Shelter Watch Report" found.

Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

Beppy now loves running around the dog park and is a huge cuddle bug who loves to laze around on the couch with her mom.

"We love our Beppy and couldn't have asked for a better addition to our little family," her family said.

This sweet 13-year-old cat has been in the shelter since march 8. here's what to know about him..

Twelve years ago, a bright-eyed kitten was adopted from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. He lived a dozen wonderful years with a kind owner until the person sadly passed away. Now, that same kitten is looking for a second home to spend his senior years and is back at animal control in the meantime.

Welcome to The Palm Beach Post's Pet of the Week, a series where we feature animals up for adoption in Palm Beach County in hopes of finding them a home.

This week's pet is Mugatu. A 13-year-old grey and white tiger-striped cat, Mugatu bears a slight resemblance to the villain in the 2001 film "Zoolander," who goes by the same name. Both this Mugatu and Will Farrell's portrayal of the faux-fashion model in the film sport beautiful white hair and are equally chic .

Mugatu has been in the shelter since March 8.

Here's what to know about our pet of the week, including what Animal Care and Control staffers say about Mugatu's personality:

How to adopt a cat or dog in Palm Beach County

You can start the adoption process in person or online.

To begin in person, visit Animal Care and Control during normal business hours at 7100 Belvedere Road near West Palm Beach to fill out an application and meet the pets there.

To begin the process online:

• Use the pet's animal ID number (like the one listed above) to search them on Animal Control's online database.
• Click on the "Ready to Adopt? Click Here" link to the right of the pet's photo.
• Fill out the two-page downloadable adoption application​ and email it to Animal Control at [email protected] .
• Once Animal Control has reviewed your application, a team member will contact you to confirm that you have been approved to adopt. Submittal of an online application does not guarantee the pet's availability.

Adoption fees: This month, standard adoption fees are waived at Animal Care and Control. Adoption fees are usually $60 for adult dogs, $75 for puppies and $50 for cats and kittens. Palm Beach County residents who are 55 years and older are offered a discounted adoption fee.

Note: All animals adopted from Animal Control will be spayed if female or neutered if male. They will be up-to-date on vaccinations, protected against fleas and ticks and microchipped.

About fostering: If you are not ready for a long-term commitment, you may want to consider offering foster care to a pet. This is a great way to get the feel for becoming a pet parent, and it allows you and your new prospective pet to get to know each other. You can find more information about fostering on Animal Control's website.

Roger, a Failed Drug Dog, Becomes a Hero of Taiwan’s Quake Response

The 8-year-old rescue dog, who was once deemed too friendly to sniff out drugs, found the body of the earthquake’s 13th victim.

The dog picked through boulders and rubble in the Taiwanese national park, looking for victims trapped or buried by the rockslides that had followed a 7.4-magnitude earthquake .

Roger, a Labrador retriever, stopped, sniffed and moved on. But then he circled back and sniffed again, seemingly confused.

Roger was trained to look for survivors, but his handler, Lee Hsin Hung, suspected that this time he had found something else. He scrambled to where Roger was standing.

“As I got closer, I saw the leg of the deceased,” Mr. Lee said in an interview.

Roger’s discovery led rescuers to recover the body of a 21-year-old woman from the rubble on Saturday, taking the death toll of Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in 25 years to 13. More than 1,000 more were injured in the disaster (but strict building codes and public preparedness may have helped prevent an even greater catastrophe).

In the days since, Roger, one of four search and rescue dogs deployed by the Kaohsiung Fire Department at Hualien’s Taroko National Park , has emerged as an unexpected star of the recovery operation. His playful antics, along with his background as a failed drug-sniffing dog, have captured hearts and offered moments of levity for a country still reeling from the disaster.

At one news conference, he attempted to gnaw on a reporter’s microphone. During another, as Mr. Lee commended his bravery, he tore apart a soft toy, scattering stuffing across the floor.

Roger was trained to sniff for drugs for customs, but he failed out of the program for being “too friendly and boisterous,” Mr. Lee said. When Roger was a year old, Mr. Lee chose him from among numerous rejected puppies to be part of the Kaohsiung emergency response team. His demeanor, which had ended his drug-sniffing career, made Mr. Lee think Roger could be an excellent search and rescue dog.

“He was very agile, his movements were very bold, and he didn’t let anything fence him in,” Mr. Lee said. “He thought he could overcome any difficulties,” he added, and was not daunted by heights or unfamiliar locations.

Since his rise to stardom, Roger has been dubbed a “ little hero ” by the Taiwanese media and has appeared on talk shows to show off his skills.

Roger’s fame will most likely be short-lived. He will retire in the second half of this year when he turns 9, Mr. Lee said, in accordance with Kaohsiung Fire Department’s policies.

“He’s already old, after all,” Mr. Lee told local reporters, “coming back from the search and rescue mission, when he jumped into the car, he was a little unsteady and I had to support him.”

A police dog with the Houston Police Department helped officers take down a robbery suspect on Monday night — but he decided to put in some overtime afterwards.

After “finding, tasting, and arresting,” the suspect, K9 Ronin led his handler back to rescue an adorable puppy he’d spotted in the woods while chasing down the alleged thief, according to the HPD police union.

“This was very lucky for the puppy, as some scumbag had tied him to an old box spring and left him to die in the woods,” officials posted on social media.

Photos show the scared black and white pup in the brush. 

Ronin’s officer took the puppy home for some pampering.

Another photo shows the little dog sitting in a cardboard box at the home as Ronin watches over him from the bed.

He’s “in great spirits,” officials said.

Police are now searching to find the pooch a permanent home.

46 dogs in pet hotel saved during New Jersey fire. See bodycam video of their rescue

FAIRFIELD, N.J. -- Police officers raced through smoke to save dozens of dogs trapped inside a pet hotel near a burning building. 

Bodycam footage shows the first officers arriving on scene at the K9 Resorts pet hotel in Fairfield, New Jersey at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

They immediately went inside, without any equipment to help them breathe. 

The officers broke through several locked doors to get to the dogs. Once inside, they quickly grabbed the pets and ran out. 

Firefighters arrived moments later and joined the effort. 

Good Samaritan assists first responders

Graham Clarke, who works around the corner from the pet hotel, was headed home when he saw the smoke. He helped herd the rescued dogs into an outdoor play area in the back. 

"First four officers went straight in, bringing dogs out and me and my wife stood outside and held the dogs while the police and fire rescued them. It was quite exciting," said Clarke. 

"We pretty much were like a dog Uber service"  

In all, 46 dogs were saved by first responders and taken to another pet boarding facility in the area. All were  reportedly  in good shape. 

"With the assistance of other police departments locally, we pretty much were like a dog Uber service. We got them to another location in that same complex that was vacant," said Officer Stacy Chiarolanza. 

No serious injuries were reported, but other businesses in the complex suffered smoke and fire damage. 

Officials said the fire started in a separate building. The cause of it was still under investigation.

Authorities said that the dog, a rottweiler, who attacked the victim and mauled her had been brought to the house by her son..

A woman in Michigan was seriously injured and is at the risk of a losing an arm after a dog her son brought home attacked her and dragged her out of the house onto the front yard.

Norton Shores Professional Firefighters, in a post on social media Monday afternoon, said that they responded to a "report of an individual found down with traumatic dog bite injuries and both dogs still inside the fence next to the individual."

Officers who arrived at the scene, including medical personnel, were able to retrieve the individual and "temporarily contain both dogs humanely," said the agency. Pound Buddies , a community animal rescue service serving Muskegon County, Michigan, also arrived on scene to help control the dogs.

Patient received extensive injuries, was semi-conscious, says Norton Shores Fire Chief

Norton Shores Fire Chief Bob Gagnon told USA TODAY that the call for a subject being attacked by a dog came around 9:30 a.m. Monday. Gagnon said that a passerby had seen two dogs attacking a woman in the front yard and alerted authorities.

"When our crews arrived on the scene, they found the subject lying face down in the front yard, being attacked by the dog," Gagnon said.

The fire chief said that removing the woman from the dogs' grasp was challenging because the dogs were also aggressive towards the police officers and firefighters. While they were eventually able to successfully pull the animals away from the woman, it was not before the woman was seriously injured.

"We found a patient with extensive injuries to the arm and the patient was semi-conscious," Gagnon said. "The extent of the injuries were so severe that we're pretty certain that they're probably not going to be able to save the arm."

"I don't know for sure, but it does not look very good," Gagnon said, adding that the woman is still at the hospital.

The victim's age and identity have not yet been revealed.

Dog brought home by son

Gagnon explained the victim's son had brought home the dog, a Rottweiler, that attacked his mother. The fire chief said that the victim's son had spotted the dog chained up outside his workplace and decided to bring it home to care for it, adding it is likely that the dog was abandoned.

It is not immediately clear how long the dog was at the victim's house before attacking the woman. Meanwhile, the other dog, also a Rottweiler, was the victim's pet. Gagnon said that the pet was not involved in the attack. However, both dogs were taken in by Pound Buddies.

"I don't know what timeframe between the time that he brought the dog to the time that this accident happened," Gagnon said. "It could be days, but the dog just became very aggressive and attacked his mother. The dog actually drove the mother out into the front yard."

Pound Buddies Executive Director Lana Carson told USA TODAY that the dog that attacked the woman had to "unfortunately be euthanized," because it would be a risk to let it back into society.

The other dog, however, continues to remain at the shelter, said Carson, as they wait to hear back from the victim's family.

Gagnon said that the woman was alone at home when the accident happened, and the son was not home. Had the passerby not alerted authorities, no one would have known about the attack, Gagnon said. No contact has been made with the son on the incident.

"As a firefighter, you prepare for anything in this job. But certainly, in my 30-plus years as a firefighter, that's probably the worst dog attack that I've ever witnessed," Gagnon said. "It's definitely going to take a toll on her [the victim's] family and, you know, that's the kind of stuff that weighs pretty heavy even on our firefighters."
