Based on a half-hour syndicated program that ran from 1961-64 and in 1979, the concept was successfully revived as an hourlong show with Peter Graves as host in 1987. Watch TV Shows on Biography Channel

The Biography Channel first began airing in in 1999. The network began due to the popularity of the original program of the same name that aired on the A&E network. The A&E network is a joint venture and collaboration between The Walt Disney Company, the Heart Corporation, and NBC. Before becoming the exclusive home for the series after which it was named, Biography, the network could most often be found airing fact based programming in addition to reruns of shows like Murder, She Wrote and Sherlock Holmes, that had previously aired on the original A&E network.

In 2007, the network decided to shift the focus from the biography type series it had been airing into what they dubbed true stories about fascinating people. The network completely revamped the line-up of programming, and continued on under the shortened moniker, Bio.

In 2013, the network was beginning to fail, so it rebranded once again. Reruns of house flipping and design shows were placed on the schedule, along with a list of 30 potential new series. At this point the name Bio was also dropped, removing almost every trace of the network that it used to be. The new name for the network became FYI.

Miguel Díaz-Canel and Raúl Castro

Miguel Díaz-Canel (born April 20, 1960, Villa Clara province, Cuba) is a Cuban politician who served as president of Cuba (2018– ) and secretary-general of the Communist Party of Cuba (2021– ). He was Raúl Castro ’s handpicked successor for both positions. Born a year after the Cuban Revolution , a loyal, effective functionary who rose steadily through the ranks of the party, Díaz-Canel was the first person since the 1959 revolution not named Castro to hold either of the country’s leading posts.

The son of a factory worker and a schoolteacher, Díaz-Canel grew up in Villa Clara province, about 180 miles (290 km) east of Havana . He studied electrical engineering at Central University “Marta Abreu” of Las Villas in Santa Clara , graduating in 1982. That year he entered the army, in which he served until 1985. His military service included a stint in an antiaircraft missile unit as well as assignment to a detachment that provided personal security for both Raúl and Fidel Castro . Later, while teaching engineering at his alma mater, Díaz-Canel became active in the Young Communist League (Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas). In 1987, still in his mid-20s, he was appointed the Communist Party’s liaison to socialist-ruled Nicaragua , a crucial ally of Cuba. At age 33 he became second secretary of the Young Communist League.

In becoming the first secretary of the Communist Party in Villa Clara province in 1994, Díaz-Canel joined a select group of provincial party czars whose power and influence was growing as Cuba’s political system became increasingly pluralistic. He would later hold the same position in Holguín, the home province of the Castros. His ascendance came during Cuba’s “Special Period,” a time of extreme economic hardship brought about by the withdrawal of financial and material support from the Soviet Union as a result of its dissolution in 1991. With petroleum in short supply, Díaz-Canel gained attention for choosing to walk or ride a bicycle to work rather than be driven in the government-provided automobile to which he was entitled. Admirers pointed to this action as proof of his down-to-earth everyman qualities; skeptics characterized it as posturing compromised by the gasoline used by the vehicle-borne security detail that shadowed him.

The soft-spoken Díaz-Canel developed a reputation as a good listener and an accessible evenhanded public servant. An often-repeated anecdote describes how during an electrical blackout in Villa Clara, Díaz-Canel not only directed the effort to restore power but also went from bed to bed in the provincial hospital apologizing to the patients, including a political dissident who had landed in the hospital as a result of his anti-government hunger strike. Díaz-Canel’s long-standing support for a local LGBTQ nightclub was also frequently cited as a reflection of his supposedly liberal outlook.

In 1997 Díaz-Canel joined the 14-member Politburo, which functioned as Fidel Castro’s senior advisers. He was the youngest member of the body in its history. His tenure as a provincial party secretary came to an end in 2003. In 2009 Raúl Castro named him minister of higher education , which remained Díaz-Canel’s portfolio until March 2012, when he became one of eight vice presidents of the Council of Ministers, with responsibility for education, science, culture , and sports. The next year he was appointed to the Council of State and was elected its vice president in February 2013, becoming the first person born after the Cuban Revolution to hold that office. Among his high-profile (if largely ceremonial) assignments as vice president were representing the country at the funeral of Venezuelan Pres. Hugo Chávez , one of Cuba’s essential allies, and meeting with Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin in Moscow and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in P’yŏngyang, as well as attending the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in 2015.

Díaz-Canel represented a new generation of Cuban leadership that had not been forged by participation in the revolution. His style was markedly different from the aging revolutionaries who had dominated communist Cuba since its inception. In place of suits or fatigues, he sported open-collared guayabera shirts, jeans, and even Bermuda shorts. He wore his hair long and made no secret of his appreciation of rock music , especially the Beatles . An advocate for social and economic modernization and champion of increased Internet access for Cubans, Díaz-Canel often carried a computer tablet with him and maintained a personal Facebook page. His friends included musicians, artists, and other intellectuals . Two of his children have been members of a well-known Cuban rock group, Polaroid.

Yet for all of his seemingly forward-looking characteristics, Díaz-Canel also appeared to be a politician who was more than capable of adhering to the party line. Most notably, in 2017 a video surfaced in which Díaz-Canel, speaking to a group of party officials, castigated the United States and argued that Cuba was under no obligation to satisfy the terms of the reconciliation agreement reached with U.S. Pres. Barack Obama . In the video, Díaz-Canel also excoriated a Web site that he characterized as subversive and pledged to shut it down, regardless of potential accusations of censorship. Some observers felt the video had been leaked purposefully to establish Díaz-Canel’s bona fides as a hard-liner and to make him more palatable to conservative elements within the government.

In any case, on April 19, 2018, when Raúl Castro stepped down as president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers, he was replaced by Díaz-Canel, whom Castro had anointed as his successor. (In 2019 the amended constitution transformed Díaz-Canel’s office to the president of the republic, while adding the post of prime minister to oversee the government’s day-to-day operation.) Castro retained the powerful office of secretary-general of the Communist Party. At age 57 Díaz-Canel was arguably on the doorstep of senior citizenship, but he was a babe in the woods compared with the typical high-level Cuban government official. Among the departures from tradition of the Díaz-Canel presidency was the public visibility of his (second) wife, Lis Cuesta, then director of academic services for the cultural tourism agency Paradiso. The appearance of spouses at the side of leaders had been denigrated as a convention of bourgeois politics by the Castros, whose wives were seldom seen in public, but Cuesta became a prominent presence who acted more like a first lady .

Although Raúl Castro had retained leadership of the party, he indicated that he planned to relinquish that position too in 2021. Despite the fact that the Cuban economy was reeling as a result of the reimposition of restrictions on U.S. travel to the island, disruptions to the supply of cheap petroleum from Venezuela , and especially the effects of the global coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Castro made good on his pledge and officially retired as secretary-general at the Eighth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba in April 2021. Two days after Castro stepped down, he was replaced by Díaz-Canel.

In the 1920s, she launched her first perfume and eventually introduced the Chanel suit and the little black dress, with an emphasis on making clothes that were more comfortable for women. She herself became a much revered style icon known for her simple yet sophisticated outfits paired with great accessories, such as several strands of pearls.

Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. Her early years were anything but glamorous. At age 12, after her mother’s death, Chanel was put in an orphanage by her father, who worked as a peddler.

Chanel was raised by nuns who taught her how to sew — a skill that would lead to her life’s work. Her nickname came from another occupation entirely. During her brief career as a singer, Chanel performed in clubs in Vichy and Moulins where she was called “Coco.”

Some say that the name comes from one of the songs she used to sing, and Chanel herself said that it was a “shortened version of cocotte, the French word for 'kept woman,'” according to an article in The Atlantic .

Beginnings of a Fashion Empire

Around the age of 20, Chanel became involved with Etienne Balsan, who offered to help her start a millinery business in Paris. She soon left him for one of his wealthier friends, Arthur “Boy” Capel. Both men were instrumental in Chanel’s first fashion venture.

Opening her first shop on Paris’s Rue Cambon in 1910, Chanel started out selling hats. She later added stores in Deauville and Biarritz and began making clothes.

Her first taste of clothing success came from a dress she fashioned out of an old jersey on a chilly day. In response to the many people who asked about where she got the dress, she offered to make one for them. “My fortune is built on that old jersey that I’d put on because it was cold in Deauville,” she once told author Paul Morand.

First Perfume

In the 1920s, Chanel took her thriving business to new heights. She launched her first perfume, Chanel No. 5, which was the first to feature a designer’s name. Perfume “is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory of fashion. . . . that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure,” Chanel once explained.

The fragrance was in fact also backed by department store owner Théophile Bader and businessmen Pierre and Paul Wertheimer, with Chanel developing a close friendship with Pierre.

A deal was ultimately negotiated where the Wertheimer business would take in 70 percent of Chanel No. 5 profits for producing the perfume at their factories, with Bader receiving 20 percent and Chanel herself only receiving 10 percent. Over the years, with No. 5 being a massive source of revenue, she repeatedly sued to have the terms of the deal renegotiated.

Iconic Designs: Chanel Suit & Little Black Dress

In 1925, Chanel introduced the now legendary Chanel suit with collarless jacket and well-fitted skirt. Her designs were revolutionary for the time—borrowing elements of men’s wear and emphasizing comfort over the constraints of then-popular fashions. She helped women say goodbye to the days of corsets and other confining garments.

Another 1920s revolutionary design was Chanel’s little black dress. She took a color once associated with mourning and showed just how chic it could be for evening wear.

Closing Down Shop

The international economic depression of the 1930s had a negative impact on Chanel's company, but it was the outbreak of World War II that led her to close her business. She fired her workers and shut down her shops.

After the war, Chanel left Paris, spending some years in Switzerland in a sort of exile. She also lived at her country house in Roquebrune for a time.

Return to Fashion

At the age of 70, in the early 1950s, Chanel made a triumphant return to the fashion world. She first received scathing reviews from critics, but her feminine and easy-fitting designs soon won over shoppers around the world.

Relationships and a Marriage Proposal

Beginning in 1920, Chanel had a short-lived relationship with composer Igor Stravinsky . Chanel had attended the notorious world premiere of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” in 1913.

Around 1923, she met the wealthy Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, aboard his yacht. The two started a decades-long relationship. In response to his marriage proposal, which she turned down, she reportedly said, “There have been several Duchesses of Westminster—but there is only one Chanel!”

Life as Nazi Agent

During the German occupation of France, Chanel got involved with a Nazi military officer, Hans Gunther von Dincklage. She got special permission to stay in her apartment at the Hotel Ritz in Paris, which also operated as German military headquarters.

After the war ended, Chanel was interrogated about her relationship with von Dincklage, but she was not charged as a collaborator. Some have wondered whether friend Winston Churchill worked behind the scenes on Chanel’s behalf.

While not officially charged, Chanel suffered in the court of public opinion. Some still viewed her relationship with a Nazi officer as a betrayal of her country.

Chanel died on January 10, 1971, at her apartment in the Hotel Ritz. She never married, having once said “I never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird.” Hundreds crowded together at the Church of the Madeleine to bid farewell to the fashion icon. In tribute, many of the mourners wore Chanel suits.

A little more than a decade after her death, designer Karl Lagerfeld took the reins at her company to continue the Chanel legacy. Today her namesake company is held privately by the Wertheimer family and continues to thrive, believed to generate hundreds of millions in sales each year.

Movies, Books and Plays on Chanel

In 1969, Chanel’s fascinating life story became the basis for the Broadway musical Coco , starring Katharine Hepburn as the legendary designer. Alan Jay Lerner wrote the book and lyrics for the show’s song while Andre Prévin composed the music. Cecil Beaton handled the set and costume design for the production. The show received seven Tony Award nominations, and Beaton won for Best Costume Design and René Auberjonois for Best Featured Actor.

Several biographies of the fashion revolutionary have also been written, including Chanel and Her World (2005), written by Chanel's friend Edmonde Charles-Roux.

In the 2008 television movie Coco Chanel , Shirley MacLaine starred as the famous designer around the time of her 1954 career resurrection. The actress told WWD that she had long been interested in playing Chanel. “What’s wonderful about her is she’s not a straightforward, easy woman to understand.”

In the 2008 film Coco Before Chanel, French actress Audrey Tautou played Chanel in her early years, from childhood to the founding of her fashion house. In 2009, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky detailed Chanel's relationship with the composer.
