10 Benefits to Studying Abroad

Study Abroad

Studying abroad may be one of the most beneficial experiences for a college student. By studying abroad, students have the opportunity to study in a foreign nation and take in the allure and culture of a new land. Here is a list of the top 10 reasons to study abroad!

1. See the World

The biggest reason you should consider a study abroad program is the opportunity to see the world . By studying abroad, you will experience a brand-new country with incredible new outlooks, customs and activities. The benefits of studying abroad include the opportunity to see new terrains, natural wonders, museums and landmarks of your host nation.

In addition, when you’re abroad, you won’t be limited to traveling in just the nation in which you are studying – you can see neighboring countries as well! For example, if you study in France, you’ll have the option to travel through various parts of Europe including London , Barcelona , and Rome.

2. Education

Another reason you might consider studying abroad is for the chance to experience different styles of education . By enrolling in a study abroad program, you’ll have the chance to see a side of your major that you may not have been exposed to at home.

You’ll find that completely immersing yourself in the education system of your host country is a great way to really experience and understand the people, its traditions, and its culture. Education is the centerpiece of any study abroad trip—it is, after all, a study abroad program—and choosing the right school is a very important factor.

3. Take in a New Culture

Many students who choose to study abroad are leaving their home for the first time. When they arrive in their new host country, they are fascinated by the distinct cultural perspectives. When you study abroad you will find incredible new foods, customs, traditions, and social atmospheres.

You will find that you have a better understanding and appreciation for the nation’s people and history. You will have the opportunity to witness a completely new way of life.

4. Hone Your Language Skills

Chances are if you’re planning on studying abroad, one of the major draws is the opportunity to study a foreign language. Studying abroad grants you the opportunity to completely immerse yourself in a new language, and there is no better way to learn than to dive right in.

In addition to the considerable language practice you will get just in day to day life, your host university will likely offer language courses to provide you with a more formal education. Immerse yourself in a new culture and go beyond a purely academic experience

5. Career Opportunities

When you finish your study abroad program and return home, you will return with a new perspective on culture, language skills, a great education, and a willingness to learn. Needless to say, all of these are very attractive to future employers.

Many students find that they love their host country so much that they decide to seek work there. If you can relate, you will find that a local education will be very valuable when searching for a potential job in that country.

6. Find New Interests

If you are still questioning why to study abroad, you should know that studying in a different country offers many new activities and interests that you may never have discovered if you’d stayed at home. You might find that you have an as-yet undiscovered talent for hiking, water sports, snow skiing, golf, or various other new sports you may never have tried back home.

You’ll also have the chance to discover other new and exciting forms of entertainment. Plays, movies, dancing, nightclubs, and concerts are just a few activities that you can enjoy.

7. Make Lifelong Friends

One of the biggest benefits of studying abroad is the opportunity to meet new lifelong friends from different backgrounds. While studying abroad, you will attend school and live with students from your host country. This gives you the opportunity to really get to know and create lasting relationships with your fellow students.

After the study abroad program ends, make an effort stay in contact with your international friends. In addition to rewarding personal relationships, these friends can also be important networking tools later down the road.

8. Personal Development

There is nothing quite like being on your own in a foreign country. You might find that studying abroad really brings out your independent nature. Students who study abroad become explorers of their new nation and really discover the curiosity and excitement that they harbor.

A benefit to studying abroad is the opportunity to discover yourself while gaining an understanding of a different culture. Being in a new place by yourself can be overwhelming at times, and it tests your ability to adapt to diverse situations while being able to problem solve.

9. Graduate School Admissions

Like future employers, graduate school admissions boards look very highly on study abroad experiences. Students that study abroad display diversity and show that they aren’t afraid to seek out new challenges or put themselves in difficult situations.

Most importantly, students who have studied abroad show just how committed they are to their education. Graduate schools regularly look for candidates who will bring a unique aspect to their university. Students who have studied abroad have shown that they have the curiosity and educational acumen to be a leader in graduate school.

10. Life Experience

Why study abroad? For most students, this time may be the only opportunity they ever get to travel abroad for a long period of time. Eventually you will find a job and career, and the opportunity to study abroad may turn out to be a once in a life time opportunity.

Take this opportunity to travel the world with no commitments but to study and learn about new cultures. Studying abroad is an experience unlike any other.

These are just some of the advantages of studying abroad. The benefits of this experience really can’t be explained in such a short article. Boost your language skills as you live in another country, get out of your comfort zone and meet people from different places of the world and at the same time get the best education.

Living in another country exposes you to things you cannot experience in your home country and in the future it will help you stand out from the competition as you apply for jobs and your experience of studying abroad is somethig you can share on your resume.

  • Introduction

1. Experience a new culture

2. make friends from around the world, 3. become truly independent, 4. change the way you think, 5. get ready for an international workplace, 6. develop your language skills, 7. study in a global hub for your field, 8. travel more widely.

Higher education experts around the world share what they believe to be the main benefits of studying abroad including experience in a global hub, and developing language skills via immersion in an international experience, as well as key factors to consider when  choosing a location  for your studies.

Dee Roach, group manager and European marketing for the Navitas Education Group, says nothing beats the immersive international experience you get while studying abroad. “The best way of finding out about another culture is by immersing yourself in it, and you can only do that by living in a country. Once you are working, your holiday or experiences overseas might be limited to only two to four weeks per year so studying abroad is a great opportunity to remain in a country and learn all about it over a longer period of time.”

Elizabeth Dalferes, assistant director of admissions and graduate program administration at Tulane Law School, adds that if you’ve stayed closer to home for your undergraduate degree, enrolling in a master’s program can be the perfect time to get this international experience. "Students will often pursue a master's degree at a foreign institution to gain a unique cultural experience while acquiring new skills.”

It’s likely that the university you choose for your international studies will have a large community of students both from the local area and all around the globe. If you take full advantage of this opportunity, you could graduate having established lasting friendships with people based in many different countries – great for future trips, and also a good basis for an international professional network. As Dalferes says, “Spending time studying abroad can provide an excellent opportunity to make new contacts and build invaluable relationships with peers from around the world."

Being part of an internationally diverse academic community can also enhance the quality of your learning, providing a wider spectrum of opinions and expertise – a point made by Professor Kimberly Hutchings, program director of the MSc in International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The experience of university is, for most new students, a steep learning curve in gaining independence. But studying abroad takes that a whole step further, challenging students to really develop as individuals. Dee Roach says, “You obviously have to cope on your own when you are studying abroad. You have to be able to look after yourself and sort out your own affairs.”

Studying abroad may well change the way you view all kinds of things which you’d previously taken for granted. Sarah Han of the Department of International Cooperation at the Korean Council for University Education says, "Studying abroad provides an opportunity to expand one's field of view and helps one to understand and analyze problems and phenomena from a longer-term, worldwide perspective.” She adds, “Moreover, long-term experience in other cultures has a tendency to help one think objectively about oneself and one's home country, tolerate differences, and recognize and appreciate diversity."

Han continues to explain how this international experience prepares students for future careers: "Students are more open to new knowledge and expertise when abroad, and that knowledge is often more easily applicable and adaptable to situations requiring international interaction; thus one can expect to be more competitive in today's era of globalization.”

Lauren Welch, head of advising for the US-UK Fulbright Commission in London agrees that studying abroad is likely to enhance your future job prospects. "Employers are looking to graduates to have international experience either by studying or working abroad. Now there are many more opportunities to study and work abroad, or stay on and work afterwards.”

Dee Roach adds, “Anyone who is able to put on their CV that they studied abroad is at a great advantage in terms of impressing future employers. At a very basic level it will give you something to talk about in an interview. But much more importantly it will prove to your potential employer that you have the ability to stand on your own two feet, that you can fit in when placed in different environments, and that you are resourceful and have initiative.”

For many international students, studying abroad is a chance to develop language skills, either through studying in a second language or by practicing the language spoken locally. A growing number of courses around the world are taught in English, particularly at graduate level, and of course proficiency in English has many applications across all kinds of careers. But indeed any additional language skills are an asset.

"Language skills obtained while studying abroad will always be beneficial to the student and their home country in both the short- and long-term,” says Sarah Han.

As Lauren Welch points out, studying abroad is also a great opportunity to spend time in a location which is known as a leading global hub in your field of interest. This could mean you may have opportunities to learn from renowned experts and guest speakers, and perhaps gain some impressive work experience. For example, those studying finance may be attracted to global hubs such as New York, London or Hong Kong, while those interested in politics may be looking at universities in major political centers such as Washington DC or Brussels.

Dee Roach also notes that some countries are especially well-known as leaders in a particular field of research and development, or a particular strand of education. “Germany is synonymous with advances in engineering technology, the US with top business and management programs such as Harvard, MIT and Stanford (to name but a few), Australia screams art and design and sport, and Canada has its world-renowned ‘co-op programs’.”

Finally, studying abroad is a chance to travel more widely around the world region in which you’re based. “Obviously you will not just be tied to the university or city you are studying in. You will also have the time and opportunity to travel within and around that country,” Roach says. “Country-hopping during holidays and weekends is also possible, depending on where you are based. This will normally be with the added benefit of cheaper travel, as you will be armed with your student (discount) card.”

Discover Our Top 7 Benefits of Studying Abroad in College

1. you’ll connect with new cultures and languages..

One of the key benefits of studying abroad is being able to immerse yourself in a culture that’s different from your own. Maybe you’ll choose to study in Spain and live with a host family to learn how they cook authentic paella. Perhaps you’ll choose to study abroad in Sydney where you’ll learn about the Aboriginal culture that dates back more than 60,000 years ago. Maybe you’d like to study abroad in Jordan and visit Petra, home to Al-Khazneh, one of the oldest and most magnificent structures on the planet. Regardless of where you choose to go, one of the main benefits of studying abroad is connecting with new cultures, people, art, values, fashion, and more.

In the vein of making connections, studying abroad will also help you build new (or strengthen your existing) language skills in a native-speaking country. Being fully immersed in a culture that primarily speaks their native language is one of the most effective ways to develop and improve your foreign language skills. Whether you want to refine your Spanish language skills in Latin America , study Chinese for the first time in Shanghai , or put your Korean language skills to the test in Seoul , CIEE’s programs in 30+ diverse global cities around the world offer you plenty of places to learn an entirely new language or improve your existing knowledge in a real-world context.

2. You’ll meet locals who help you feel at home away from home.

Establishing your home away from home can be tricky, especially in the first few weeks in a new city. Thankfully, the people you meet abroad are determined to help you feel right at home. Not only will your host family welcome you into their home with open arms, but our on-site staff at each CIEE center work hard to foster a sense of community with you abroad as well.

Whether with your favorite local pastry shop owner or one of your professors, engaging with locals abroad can help you build a home away from home. Not to mention, feeling connected to your community abroad will combat any feelings of homesickness you may (or may not) experience during your program.

“I had a fantastic time and the CIEE Seoul staff were so attentive and helpful at all times. They were like my family here while on study abroad.” – Aaliyah A., Howard University.

3. you’ll see the world and gain a new perspective..

Challenging your worldview is one of the most important skills you gain from study abroad. During your time living and learning in a new country, you’ll not only explore new environments, but also gain a more nuanced perspective of humanity, geopolitics, the environment, and more. In doing so, you’ll have more empathy toward others, appreciate how other cultures approach work, religion, family, and so on, and acquire a deeper understanding of how the world works.

By the end of your program, your newfound global perspective will impact the way you approach your education, career, family, friends, and community back home, whether you realize it – or not.

4. You’ll go on unique cultural excursions to bring your studies to life.

Each study abroad and global internship program at CIEE is infused with unique cultural excursions, giving you plenty of opportunities to take your learnings outside of the classroom for real-world application and impact. Through our one-of-a-kind excursions and study tours, you’ll apply your academics to the outside world by exploring important cultural sites, chatting with local guides, cooking authentic cuisine, and more!

From a day-trip two hours outside of Seville to the seaside city of Cadiz to an overnight excursion to the luxurious city of Marrakesh in Morocco to a visit to the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History in Seoul, CIEE’s cultural excursions offer something for everyone.

5. You’ll boost your resume with real-world international work experience.

Studies show 97% of students who study abroad find employment within 12 months of graduation and 25% earn higher salaries than their peers. With a global internship , you can boost your resume and gain the competitive edge you need to stand out to future employers. From problem-solving and communication skills to adaptability and cultural competence, companies love to hear about demonstrable skills gained abroad that you can bring to their organization.

Whether you long to intern with an environmental organization in Costa Rica where you’ll work hands-on to learn about sustainable waste management on a dairy farm or you’d love to spend your summer interning in Barcelona at a startup organization in the retail space, the career benefits you’ll gain during a global internship are unmatched and highly competitive.

From semester-long internships to summer internships to study abroad programs with internships baked into them to virtual opportunities , we offer global internships for all types of work experiences in a wide variety of industries that are guaranteed to benefit your future career.

6. You’ll form new friendships that’ll last a lifetime.

The moment your study abroad program begins, you’ll meet new people you likely wouldn’t have met otherwise and develop strong bonds with them through your shared cultural experiences.

From CIEE staff, professors, and administrators to your fellow classmates, you’ll form strong connections with your community abroad as you live and learn in a new city together every day both in and outside of the classroom.

What better way to make the most of your study abroad journey than sharing your experience with your new besties immersed in the program with you? With such a unique shared experience, it’s no wonder alums say they form long-lasting relationships with the friends they meet abroad.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I discovered so much about myself and the new culture, as well as having made long-lasting friendships!” – Clara D., Arizona State University

7. you’ll enjoy best-in-class academics..

No matter which CIEE Study Abroad program and location you choose, you’ll take top-tier academic courses that earn you transferable college credits. We give you the option of enrolling in courses exclusively delivered by CIEE and courses offered by the host institutions we partner with, which may never have otherwise been available to you. In addition to your coursework, you may also have the option to complete independent research or an internship in your desired field . To ensure the courses you complete abroad can be transferred to your host university, you should consult your study abroad advisor.

From gaining skills to aiding professional development, enabling self-reliance and independence, and forming connections with lifelong friends or future colleagues, the benefits of studying abroad are immense.

Read on to find out 10 impactful benefits of studying abroad !

1. Cultural immersion expands your perspective

Reasons to Study Abroad - Gabriella, Ecuador Study Abroad Semester

Rather than merely scratching the surface of a location, cultural immersion means that you’re actually integrating with the local community, building empathy, and gaining an appreciation for connection through long-term travel. Many programs also offer the option of living with a host family for the duration, which is another fantastic way to authentically experience your host country.

Exposure to another culture’s traditions, stories, and customs will diversify your worldview. We can learn a lot from other cultures’ ways of living and even find ways to grow and challenge our own views. You may learn to adopt some cultural traits to become a better person or see what aspects you can incorporate into your life back at home.

"I’ve made so many new friends through this experience and it has completely transformed the way I travel." - Olivia, Seoul Internships with Beyond Academy

2. You can take unique and location-specific classes

Another reason to study abroad is that it will allow you to take modules and classes which you otherwise would not be able to at home. Every university has a few classes that are unique to the school.

Whether you want to study indigenous cultures in New Zealand, Spanish in Spain, or wildlife management in Australia, specific countries will allow you a more educational experience both inside and outside the classroom.

"Costa Rica is one of the best places to study sustainability and the environment, which is what my program was focused on. I was able to learn about current environmental problems on a global and local scale and spend time on field trips learning from Costa Ricans who run local sustainable farms, wastewater treatment facilities, and more." - Madison, CIEE Monteverde Summer Study Abroad

3. Gain field insight through immersive experiences

Whether you’re going to Europe , Asia , South America , or anywhere else in the world for your studies, another benefit of going overseas is being able to learn about the history of the location while being there. Immersive experiences can allow you to see firsthand the cultural significance and impact of historical events in a particular country.

Another reason to study abroad from an academic perspective is that you’ll gain practical knowledge in your field of study and go beyond the textbook. For example, If you’re studying art or art history in Italy , you can visit Michelangelo’s David, the Last Supper, and other notable works in-person.

Or if you're studying fashion in Paris , you may get the opportunity to attend prestigious fashion events such as Paris Fashion Week.

“For my core class, I took the History of Paris Through Architecture. This was by far my favorite course as most of the classes are out exploring the city. We would have walking lectures going from sight to sight and learning about the why and how each building was constructed.” - Jasper, CEA CAPA Education Abroad in Paris, France

4. You could save money on tuition

Tuition fees can be expensive, but they vary from one country to another and studying abroad offers you the potential to save money on tuition. Germany, Norway, and France in particular are known for their low tuition fees when compared to other countries. Germany, for example, is rife with public universities which offer lower tuition fees (sometimes zero tuition fees!) than in the US, for example.

Furthermore, even if tuition fees are similar to universities or programs back home, the cost of living may be lower, allowing you greater saving potential. Additionally, you have the opportunity to win study abroad scholarships and grants ! Applying for a scholarship and grant offers you the chance to greatly reduce your expenditure when studying abroad.

5. Your independence grows as you leave your comfort zone

Traveling and living abroad is no easy feat; It puts you in entirely new situations and environments, forcing you to rely on yourself and be quick on your feet. In that sense, studying abroad forces you to leave your comfort zone and learn to start a new life on your own in a place far from your safety net.

During your time abroad, expect to learn more about yourself , discover new interests, and gain a greater appreciation for all the support your family has given you up until now. You’ll develop cross-cultural communication skills, gain cultural awareness, become a stronger critical thinker, and learn to quickly problem-solve. You’ll learn much more about yourself than you would studying at home.

"I cannot even explain how thankful I am that I chose to study abroad with AIFS in Barcelona, Spain during the Spring 2020. This program changed my life and I felt that I grew so much as a person." - Hayley, AIFS Abroad in Barcelona

6. You’ll gain international experience and a global network

International experience never goes amiss on a job or college application. Very few people have international experience , this will give you the edge in competitive industries and fields. International experience at a young age signifies independence, confidence, social skills, organizational skills, and so on, which are highly desirable qualities for an employer who wants to hire someone who is intuitive.

Studying abroad also gives you the opportunity to meet others from around the globe and grow your network, both personal and professional. Depending on what your host institution’s policies are on research and internships , going overseas may also help you get your foot in the door for future work opportunities in your field.

“Adelante offered support that allowed me to thrive in my internship while encouraging autonomy for an authentic abroad experience.” - Matt, Medical Internship Seville

7. Language learning can open doors

If you already know the basics of another language or have always wanted to learn, this is your opportunity ! There truly is no better way to master a language than to move to a country where it’s the predominant and official language. By immersing yourself in the country, language, and culture, you’ll learn to gain fluency significantly faster than any other language learning approach.

It’s best if you have a basic understanding of the language before jumping into a fully immersive language experience ; however, many programs are designed for novices and many universities around the globe even offer classes in English .

"Since moving to Alicante, my Spanish knowledge and conversational skills have improved more than I could have ever imagined." - Kamryn, USAC: Spain, Alicante program

8. It’s a unique way to travel

An obvious benefit of studying abroad is that you’ll visit places you’ve never been to. Not only do you get to travel the world, you get to live abroad, rather than skip through countries without gaining meaningful insight into cultural life.

You’ll also find that it’s easier and eco-friendlier visit nearby countries while you’re studying abroad. For example, if you study abroad in Europe, you can take a train to nearby countries without needing to increase your carbon footprint or spending thousands on flights! In the age of climate anxiety, this is the most ethical way to travel.

“Some of the amazing excursions that I have been able to do through TEAN and ISA were going to Cairns in Queensland and seeing the Great Barrier Reef. I have been able to go surfing, and also watch a professional AFL game. This is just a few of the many extra excursions and activities TEAN provides for their students abroad” - Libby, TEAN Study Abroad in Perth, Australia

9. You'll develop life-long friendships

One of the benefits of going to university is that you’ll meet new people . When you study abroad, you’ll meet other like minded globetrotters who share interests in cultural immersion, learning languages, and more. This also creates connections that can lead to travel opportunities all over the globe!

However, not only will you meet other international students, you’ll make friends with members of the local community. In addition to wholesome friendships, these people can introduce you to hidden gems, cultural insights, and language development.

“I still keep in touch with the friends I made during my year abroad and have visited a few of them in their home countries in addition to reuniting with my host siblings as adults in various European countries.” - Marina, AFS Year and Semester High School Abroad in Italy

10. Become a global citizen

The world won’t seem so small after you’ve studied abroad. However, the more you travel, the more you’ll realize just how complex the world is, and how your home culture is just a sheer microcosm.

Living and studying abroad will challenge your perspective. You’ll come to understand that cultures are highly complex and ponder questions which you hadn’t ever considered. You’ll understand more about how the world works, for better or for worse, and you’ll come to terms with cultural beliefs and etiquette which you at first didn’t understand or agree with, making you more spiritual, understanding, and self aware.

Reap the benefits of studying abroad!

As you now know, the benefits of study abroad are multivarious! Whether you hope that your study abroad facilitates personal, professional, or educational growth, or a combination of each, you’ll find many reasons as to why you should study abroad.

Introduction

New cultural experiences, opportunities to learn new languages, travel opportunities, enhancement of employment opportunities, arguments against studying abroad, works cited.

Studying abroad refers to the act of pursuing primary, secondary, or post-secondary education in a foreign country. In the United States, foreign students comprise approximately 1 percent of the student population (Byram 34). Many students study aboard especially for their post-secondary education that includes university and postgraduate studies. In certain cases, students enroll for short study programs.

For instance, many institutions conduct academic exchange programs that aim to expose students to new cultures and educational environments (Cressey 52). The issue of studying abroad has been debated among experts in the academic field for a long time.

Opponents argue that it is expensive and introduces students to new cultural experiences that alter their perspectives and values in negative ways. On the other hand, proponents argue that studying abroad is good for cultural exposure and new educational experiences. Students should study abroad because it exposes them to new cultural experiences, provides travel opportunities, increases their chances of employment, and expands their perspectives of different cultures and countries (Cressey 22).

One of the advantages of studying abroad is exposure to new cultures and learning environments (Byram 37). Globalization has increased competition for employment opportunities among graduates in international labor markets. As a result, it has initiated changes in learning approaches because of the need to work in different cultures and among people who speak different languages (Cressey 62).

It is necessary for students to study abroad in order for them to gain cross-cultural communication skills, learn different languages, and get international exposure. A common challenge among international workers is ineffective communication due to language barriers (Williamson 29). For instance, American graduates who secure employment in countries such as China and Japan find it difficult to communicate with natives because of language barrier.

In order to work in such countries, learning native languages is a necessity because few people speak English. Studying in China is an opportunity for American students to learn the language and culture of the Japanese. The global economy has numerous challenges that can be overcome by studying abroad. Statistics show that only 10 percent of American students study abroad at one point in their academic lives (Williamson 30).

Experiencing new cultures and environments pushes students out of their comfort zones and facilitates acquisition of skills that are necessary for the attainment of success in the global economy (Byram 39). Countries have different educational systems that encourage diversity through cross-cultural interactions. Exposure to different cultures is important in eradicating ingrained stereotypes and misconceptions about certain races and cultures.

Interacting with people from other cultures equips students with skills that are important in solving challenges that developing countries face (Williamson 33). For instance, foreign students who study in Africa experience the challenges that poor people face. Examples of these challenges include poverty, hunger, and diseases. This increases their compassion and willingness to offer viable solutions to solve the challenges.

The most effective way of learning a new language is through interaction with people who speak that language. In countries that do not use English as the official language, foreign students are required to study the language used by the educational systems of those countries.

Even though some programs are offered in English, students learn local languages in order to ensure proper communication and interaction with other students. One of the advantages of studying a new language is the opportunities it offers with regard to communication, interactions, and socialization with natives (Williamson 39). It is easy to learn a new language through interactions with people who use it.

Studying abroad offers students an opportunity to travel to new countries and have new experiences that expand their perceptions of the world (Williamson 41). Foreign students get the opportunity to visit places that they could not have otherwise visited in their lives had they not traveled abroad to study. Some study programs include field trips that allow students to master their surroundings.

In addition to travel experiences, students make new friends because they interact with both natives and foreign students from other countries (Cressey 72). International media outlets usually present distorted images of certain countries by focusing on the challenges that their citizens face such as poverty, hunger, and diseases.

Studying aboard equips students with firsthand experience regarding the lifestyles and economic endeavors of such countries and as such gain new perspectives and ideas (Williamson 46). One of the challenges that American students face is a constricted view of the world. The United States is the largest economy in the world that offers innumerable opportunities to its citizens.

Studying abroad offers American students an opportunity to live in countries that do not offer as many opportunities to citizens as their country does. Such experiences change their perspectives regarding their culture and the cultures of other countries. Cross-cultural interactions shift or validate some of their perspectives and beliefs.

Students who study abroad increase their opportunities for employment especially by international organizations. Employers are more attracted to individuals who possess international experience that is gained form living in different cultures and countries (McKeown 54).

Examples of job opportunities that require international experience include international relations, diplomacy, medicine, and governance. Students should use their experiences in foreign countries to gain communication skills and other abilities that will give them competitive edge in the labor market. Many students choose to study abroad because of the high quality of education offered in certain educational systems (Cressey 63).

Students from developing countries travel to developed countries for higher education because of the high quality of education offered by the systems in those countries. Another aspect that increases employment opportunities is the creation of professional networks during the study period (Williamson 73). Students form professional networks that they use after graduation to find employment.

Studying abroad increases students’ their opportunities to volunteer, find internships, and work part-time (McKeown 55). Many institutions help students find internships and work placements after completing their programs. Forming professional networks gives students an edge over students who complete their studies in their home countries.

Opponents argue that studying abroad exposes foreign students to homesickness, culture shock, and new cultures that might change their perspectives in negative ways (McKeown 58). In addition, they argue that it is expensive and students might enroll in institutions whose educational systems are not as rigorous as those in their home countries. Even though foreign students experience homesickness, the opportunity to study abroad helps to develop independence and learn how to live without influence from their families.

The process of seeking foreign educational opportunities involves a through scrutiny of the educational systems of different institutions. Therefore, before students enroll to foreign institutions, they are usually aware of the value and quality of their educational systems (McKeown 64).

In many cases, students who study abroad receive government grants and scholarships that reduce financial pressure. On the other hand, the quality of education that students receive is far more important than the cost incurred. The benefits of studying abroad outweigh the disadvantages. Finally, the value of international exposure and acquisition of skills that enhance cross-cultural communication overshadows the cost of studying abroad.

Students usually have many options with regard to pursuing their post-secondary education. One of the options is to study abroad. Some of the benefits of studying abroad include exposure to new cultures and educational experiences, enhancement of employment opportunities, and creation of professional networks that are important for career development.

Opponents argue that studying abroad is expensive and posses the potential to affect the cultural perspectives of students negatively. In addition, they claim that students might be subjected to inferior educational systems that fail to equip them with quality academic and professional experience to navigate their careers. An important step in choosing an institution is a through scrutiny of its educational system.

Therefore, it is difficult to enroll into an inferior educational system. On the other hand, many governments and institutions offer scholarships to students. Therefore, those who cannot afford to pay for their study abroad can apply for scholarships and government grants.

Students who study abroad increase their opportunities for employment especially by international organizations because of their experiences with different cultures and cross-cultural communication skills. Another benefit of studying abroad is the opportunity for international travel. Students visit other countries and cultures that facilitated the development of new perspectives. Finally, students get an opportunity to learn new languages that give them competitive edge in different labor markets.

8 Unexpected Benefits to Studying Abroad as a Graduate Student

Industry Advice Political Science & Security

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience for students. From enhancing your global network to experiencing a new culture, the benefits to your education and career are significant.

Given this, it’s no wonder that the number of students earning a degree outside of their home country has tripled over the past 25 years. Currently, there are 100,000 more American students studying abroad compared to the previous decade, along with more than one million international college students in the U.S. What’s more, the student profile of those who study abroad continues to change, including an increase in the number of graduate-level students who choose to study internationally.

“When talking about studying abroad, you’re taking concepts from the classroom and watching it play out in real-time, in real life,” says Marissa Lombardi, assistant teaching professor and director for the Master of Science in Global Studies and International Relations program at Northeastern University.

If you didn’t have the opportunity to study abroad as an undergraduate, you might be worried that you’ve missed your chance.

Fortunately, some graduate programs offer students the option to study internationally during their studies. At Northeastern University, for example, students enrolled in programs like the MS in Global Studies and International Relations are eligible to participate in the International Field Study Experience program. This 12-week course includes a one-week, on-ground international experience in which students work to solve a real-world issue for an established multinational organization. During this time, students act as international consultants and apply their learning to a practical scenario.

Although this course is offered as a capstone for the Global Studies and International Relations program, all College of Professional Studies students are invited to enroll as an elective to enjoy the benefits of international experience that are widely applicable across disciplines.

Not only are students able to study abroad in grad school, but doing so can have tremendous benefits to your education and your career. Below is a look at the advantages of studying abroad at any stage in your education, but especially at the graduate level.

8 Benefits of Studying Abroad

In an increasingly globalized world, studying abroad is now more important than ever. If you’re considering studying abroad in graduate school, here are eight ways it can benefit your education and career.

1. Improves Your Language Skills

By studying abroad, you’ll have the opportunity to hone your language skills. While studying a language in class is rewarding, applying it to the real world is an entirely different experience. It’s likely you’ll learn the language faster because you’re practicing it regularly. You’ll also be able to pick up conversational language you wouldn’t study in class, enabling you to speak like a local.

benefits of study abroad essay

Many careers in international relations and diplomacy also rely heavily on foreign language skills. Although there are no specific language requirements to become a foreign service officer, proficiency and experience with a foreign language is a key component of a candidate’s competitiveness during the selection to become a diplomat , ambassador , or other positions with the United Nations .

2. Exposes You to Different Styles of Teaching

Each country has its own unique style of teaching. Studying abroad can help you expand your academic horizon and develop the capacity to adapt to various educational settings.

Adapting to different styles of teaching can also help you adjust to different management styles, making you more versatile in the workplace. Teaching styles you may encounter abroad include:

  • Authority Style: A teacher-centered style where a professor is the authority figure and frequently gives long lectures or one-way presentations. There is a focus on set rules and expectations, and students typically take notes to retain information.
  • Facilitator Style: Professors promote self-learning by emphasizing the teacher-student relationship. They help students develop critical thinking skills by teaching them how to ask questions and find solutions through exploration.
  • Delegator Style: Professors assign lab activities and give students in-class projects to help them stay engaged. This is a guided learning style that places the teacher in an observer role while helping students remain active participants in their learning.

3. Impresses Employers

Studying abroad can help launch your career and make you more competitive in the workforce. It gives you the opportunity to show future and current employers that you have the open mind, resourcefulness, and drive needed to adapt to a different environment.

benefits of study abroad essay

Many employers are looking for graduates who have international experience. According to a survey , 64 percent of employers consider study abroad experience to be important, and 92 percent of employers look for transferable skills that are typically gained from the experience, such as flexibility to new challenges.

“Students who study abroad offer more to the workplace than those who don’t,” Lombardi says. “They offer a fuller package than just a student who’s looked at how things are theoretically, as opposed to students who have the opportunity to apply the concepts in their studies to real jobs and experiences across various cultures.”

Another survey found that nearly 40 percent of companies missed out on international business opportunities due to a lack of personnel with international experience. Studying abroad can be a powerful resumé booster that shows employers that you have the skills they need to achieve their business goals.

4. Enhances Your Network

Studying abroad helps you build invaluable relationships with people from all over the world. You broaden your international connections while having the opportunity to meet people that could turn into life-long friends. Some connections can even lead to career opportunities, including internships, job offers, and business partners.

The university where you study will often have a large community of students from local regions and abroad, giving you the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures. The wider your network, the greater the likelihood you’ll be connected to exciting career and social opportunities.

Northeastern’s International Field Study Experience, for instance, allows students to work with established multinational companies on a real global issue that they are facing. Doing so is a unique opportunity to build relationships and expand their global networks.

5. Teaches You About New Cultures and Perspectives

benefits of study abroad essay

For example, you may work with people from other countries in your next job. By studying abroad, you’ll be more comfortable with people from different backgrounds, value their unique experiences, and establish a stronger relationship with them.

Oftentimes, our cultural background has a huge impact on how we react to different situations. Gaining a variety of perspectives can help you look at experiences in an entirely new way. By studying abroad, you’ll meet people with different upbringings, helping you widen your horizons and broaden your mind.

In addition, the best way to experience another culture is to immerse yourself in it, and the ideal way to do that is by living in another country.

6. Boosts Your Confidence

By immersing yourself in another culture, you develop valuable life skills needed for personal growth, including independence and adaptability. These skills can give you an added boost of confidence in your personal and professional life.

Studying abroad can be overwhelming, but the challenges you overcome can help you become a more mature person. You’ll find out that you can often thrive in new, unexpected circumstances, and you’ll boost your communication skills by speaking a new language—helping you further improve your self-confidence.

“It’s a great opportunity to work on cultural competencies, like being sensitive to other cultures, learning how to adapt to new situations, and tolerating ambiguity,” Lombardi says. “These skills are important to almost any job.”

Quickly adapting to your new environment will hone your self-reliance and resilience. From small tasks, like going to the doctor, to larger issues, like learning how to negotiate with a professor or adapt to a different culture’s management styles, your daily life can help you become a more capable person.

Studying abroad can also help you gain more confidence by improving certain skills that help you connect with others, such as:

  • Leadership: Strong leadership and team management skills are important in almost any environment. Knowing how to lead and inspire the people around you can help you establish stronger relationships, whether you’re working on a class project with a group of international students or completing an internship abroad.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written, public speaking, and negotiation skills are important to communicating effectively, particularly in an unfamiliar environment like a new country.
  • Cross-Cultural Awareness: Our experiences, values, and cultural backgrounds guide our viewpoints and actions. Studying abroad reminds you to be cognizant of others’ perspectives. Remember that what is considered appropriate in one culture can be inappropriate in another.

7. Allows You to See the World

benefits of study abroad essay

Studying abroad allows you to see the world and travel to new places you would otherwise not have visited. During your time away from your studies, you can go sightseeing in your new city. You’ll also get to know your region more intimately than if you were just visiting for a shorter period of time.

When studying abroad, you can also visit neighboring regions and countries, as you’re not limited to one place. For example, if you’re studying in Milan, you can visit Florence or explore the Tuscan countryside by train. With international budget airlines and travel deals, exploring the world is becoming increasingly more affordable.

Your newfound connections can also show you areas that a tourist otherwise wouldn’t experience.

8. Uncovers New Career Opportunities Abroad

Studying in a new country exposes you to increased career opportunities, depending on your field of study. If you’re interested in finance, for example, consider studying in a region such as London or Hong Kong—two cities well known for business. If you’re interested in tech, then look into Berlin or Tel Aviv.

Oftentimes, organizations hiring international employees want to see evidence that candidates can thrive in a global environment. Studying abroad, especially in an area where you are interested in working, gives you the chance to showcase key skills and relevant experience on your resumé, like cross-cultural communication and an understanding of international policy.

Skills Gained From Studying Abroad

Studying abroad can broaden a student’s academic experience by acquiring various skills that go beyond the classroom, including:

  • Provides opportunities to experience foreign cultures, improving one’s ability to work and communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds
  • Creates adaptability and resilience as students navigate unfamiliar environments and overcome challenges
  • Encourages students to learn independently and manage their daily tasks and responsibilities, giving them critical leadership skills for their future endeavors

Skills you can develop studying abroad include communication, adaptability, resilience, cultural knowledge, and independence.

The global perspective gained through studying abroad is an invaluable experience to have in today’s interconnected world, providing a competitive advantage for professionals who take the opportunity during their academic career.

Choosing a Graduate Study Abroad Program

The advantages of studying abroad are tremendous at any stage in your education. But, for those students looking to study abroad at the graduate level, finding the right program to fit their needs can be challenging.  It’s important to find a program that will help you meet your goals. If you are balancing work and school, for example, a short-term program may be a better fit for you than a one- or two-semester trip.

For those pursuing a Master of Science in Global Studies and International Relations , for example, Northeastern’s International Field Study Experience is designed to give students the experience they need for a global career .

“Our International Field Study Experience offers an experiential learning opportunity matching students with international organizations,” Lombardi says. “It’s truly an immersive program where you have the opportunity to learn about the culture and work with an industry partner. You are learning about different cultures and gaining work experience at the same time.”

In addition to career-specific benefits, Northeastern’s program also fosters personal development. International education promotes global learning, fosters understanding among groups from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and develops globally-minded individuals.

“Being able to take all of what we’re learning, focus it in the classroom, and apply it out into the field and world is amazing,” Lombardi says. “All students should take advantage of this incredible opportunity.

We’re sure that along the years, you may have met people that have studied abroad. They might have described their experience there as an otherworldly study abroad experience. However, having a lovely time in a new country while studying isn’t the only thing you’ll get out of this academic adventure. There are countless benefits of studying abroad that you, as an international student , will be eligible for. So, if you’re asking yourself, ‘why should I study abroad?’., we got some good answers for you to check out.

1. Learn a New Language

Moving to a new country means that you’re not going to be using your native language as much as you did back home. If you look at it, this is quite a benefit. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should abandon your mother tongue. The beauty of learning an additional language is that you and your brain would certainly benefit from it.

What’s best, the demand for bilingual individuals is increasing with each year that passes. So, with that being said, after getting proficient at a second language, the chances of you landing the job of your dreams will increase moderately.

2. Give a Real-Life Context to Your Studies

Several countries have programs that incorporate classroom learning with in-field learning experiences. This is done with the intention of complementing and enriching the academic learning experience for international students. Depending on your major and the country you’re studying in, you’re going to be introduced to things that will make it easier for you to grasp different abstract concepts and notions that otherwise you wouldn’t understand.

3. Become a Good Communicator

become-a-good-communicator

Living in a country where your first language isn’t spoken will undoubtedly improve your communication skills. You will have to find ways to express yourself even if you don’t speak the official language of the country you’re studying in.

However, being a good communicator isn’t only bridging the language barrier. A new country also means that you will encounter people of different cultural backgrounds that approach life differently. Talking to them daily will give you a hand in becoming a better communicator than you were on your beginnings of moving.

4. Make Lifelong Friends

An impactful experience like studying abroad will certainly get you close to different people. Starting with classmates you’re going to be spending most of the time with. You’re going to be growing and learning with them. It’s inevitable that you spend all this time with them and not make meaningful connections and relationships.

At the beginning of the studies abroad, many might worry that making friends in a foreign country will be challenging. However, you’ll most probably come to realize there was no need in worrying about it. Just like you, many people are just navigating through the new academic life. Through the many social events that the universities organize and school projects you’ll be working on, you’ll get the chance to meet new people who, chances are, might become very close to you.

5. Expand Your Worldview

We talk about perspectives all the time. We mention how we need to look at things from different perspectives. Yet, the ways how one can gain new perspectives aren’t talked about that often. Well, one of the ways you as a person can develop a new perspective is by studying abroad. As the months go by, you’ll see that the way you used to view the world will be continuously challenged.

The chances are that some of your values will shift, whereas the ones that carry weight will be solidified, and as a result, you’ll come out of this experience a more well-rounded person.

6. Impress Your Future Employers

At the end of the day, the reason (besides getting educated) why many people decide to pursue an education, be it in their country or outside of it, is to land a decent job that pays decently. Luckily, the interest for bilingual individuals is only increasing. Studies done on this subject only confirm this advantage.

Many companies who have their headquarters in many different countries are on the lookout for people who speak more than one language. While English as a lingua franca can serve you quite well, in today’s climate, people of all ethnicities and backgrounds must be included. So the more languages you know, the better the chances of you getting hired will be.

Besides being bilingual, another benefit that raises your chances of landing your dream job is your international experience. Nowadays, companies are looking for employees who have international experience and transferable skills like flexibility to challenges, something you can only get from studying abroad.

A recent study found that almost 40 percent of companies couldn’t close deals on international business opportunities because they didn’t have personnel with international experience. So, why not be the one to whom the boss says: “Pack your luggage. We need you overseas.”.

7. Learn About New Cultures and Gain Perspective

learn-about-new-cultures

Living in our own country for quite a long time makes us forget that many other different cultures exist. However, once you get out of the country, you find yourself completely immersed in a culture that isn’t yours. You’ll get to explore everything the other culture has to offer, starting with the food, local activities, their music, and their social etiquette.

Talking to other people about the country you come from and your culture, you get the chance to see your culture from somebody else’s eyes. You get to learn many things about yourself and the country you come from.

Besides learning about others’ cultures and their way of living, studying abroad also helps you learn about the global market from a different perspective and experience various ways of doing business. Seeing first-hand how different countries approach some aspects of business teaches you new methods of getting things done, and the best thing is that you can take your new business skills and experience back in your home country or wherever you decide to continue your career.

8. Boost Your Confidence

Moving to another country for an extended time means that you’re going to be on your own for quite some time. The experience of living alone in a foreign country will help you develop a sense of independence as you’re going to figure out everything on your own. From ordering a meal to using public transportation, you’ll be depending on yourself for every single thing. While it can sound overwhelming, this experience will only help you realize how capable a person you are. Consequently, by getting out of your comfort zone, your confidence will only increase.

Another way how studying abroad boosts your confidence is by preparing you with soft skills that will help you a lot in your workplace, such as:

Leadership – While you probably won’t be leading a huge company in your first year of studies, there are a lot of small things that teach you how to lead. Be it a class project with other international students or an internship during the summer, you’ll be developing management skills that are important almost everywhere.

Communication skills – No matter where life brings you, you need to communicate with others. We’re not only talking about speaking the same language and understanding each other; we’re talking about negotiation skills, public speaking, and written communication. Refining these skills allows you to sit at the table with confidence like never before.

9. Find Job Opportunities Abroad

find-job-opportunities-abroad

Many students go to study abroad with the intention of going back to their country once they finish their academic journey. However, this isn’t always the case. It happens that you’re presented with a job opportunity that is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and you can’t turn it down. By this, we want you to know that once you get a degree from an accredited university, it’s recognized in almost every country, including the country you got that degree in the first place.

Once you consider staying in the new country for a long-term period, you can start to evaluate the job opportunities that will come your way and find the one that fits you best.

10. Become a Global Citizen

Being born and raised in a particular country and not having the chance to move out of it time after time can somehow leave someone oblivious of the world surrounding them. While they’re not completely unaware, as we all know the world is a big place, they kind of don’t understand the wider world and their place in it. However, once you move abroad to study for a semester or a year, you find yourself connecting with the rest of the world in a way you couldn’t connect from back home.

Once out of your homeland, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of the issues that affect the world, how different events impact particular countries and know your role in making the planet a more sustainable place. The countries which once felt like they were light-years away now will feel more personal as you’ve lived in those countries and made friends over there.

11. Life Experience

Without a doubt, studying abroad will boost your career and personal skills, making you more ready than ever for whatever the world brings you. However, don’t forget that between your morning and afternoon lectures, between your daily meetings and assignments, between your exams and your thesis, there’s another thing that keeps happening: life!

If you return to your home country after studying abroad, there are a ton of things you can take with you. University books you can look back to, lecture notes you can revise, and research skills that may come to help. But, there’s one thing you can’t relive, and that’s life experiences. So, whenever you get the chance, invite that friend for a coffee, drink that glass of wine in your favorite bar, and take those pictures in the main city square. Trust us, it’s something you won’t regret.

Many times, when not entirely convinced, students are on the lookout for reasons to study abroad. So, if you too are one of them, we hope we have given you enough reasons to even consider an experience abroad. The University of the Potomac is always open to international students who want to study abroad in the U.S.A, more specifically in the capital city of this country, Washington D.C. .

Tips to Secure Admission in a Foreign University

There are a lot of advantages of studying overseas but securing a study abroad program is a competitive process that requires careful planning and strategic action. Here are some key tips to help you stand out and increase your chances of being accepted into your desired program:

i. Prepare a Strong Application

Begin by meticulously crafting your application to showcase not only your academic achievements but also your unique personal experiences and goals. Highlight how the program aligns with your long-term career aspirations and demonstrate your passion for international education.

A compelling application should tell a coherent story about why you are the ideal candidate, making you stand out in a pool of applicants. Remember, authenticity and clarity are key.

ii. Get a Letter of Recommendation (LOR)

A strong Letter of Recommendation (LOR) can be a game-changer in your application. Choose a recommender who knows your academic and personal qualities well and can speak to your readiness for studying abroad. Provide them with context about the program and specific traits you’d like them to emphasize. A detailed and personalized LOR can offer insights into your character that transcripts and test scores cannot, adding depth to your application.

iii. Focus on Language Proficiency

Demonstrating language proficiency is crucial, especially for programs in non-English-speaking countries. Achieving high scores on exams like TOEFL, IELTS, or the equivalent for other languages (such as DELF for French) not only fulfills application requirements but also shows your preparedness to engage fully in a new academic and cultural environment. Additionally, consider taking language classes or practicing with native speakers to further improve your fluency and confidence.

iv. Enroll in a Study Abroad Preparation (SAP) Course

Many institutions like Internshala offer Study Abroad Programs (SAP) and courses to equip students with the necessary tools to succeed overseas. These programs help students understand academic expectations in foreign universities and gain practical tips for living abroad.

Enrolling in an SAP course not only prepares you academically and culturally but also signals to the admissions committee your serious commitment to making the most of your study abroad experience.

v. Engage with the College SAP Program

Many colleges offer study abroad programs, these programs often have established partnerships with international universities, providing a smoother application process and access to exclusive opportunities.

Regularly attend information sessions, consult with study abroad advisors, and network with alumni who have participated in these programs. Being proactive in your college’s SAP offerings can open doors to unique study-abroad opportunities that may not be widely advertised .

Duck Diaries: Stories from Abroad

Bryan Villalta in Italy

Studying abroad is a dynamic opportunity that adds another dimension to the unique Stevens experience. Explore highlights of our students’ journeys abroad and learn how these transformative experiences helped to enrich their cultural understanding and broaden their perspectives.

From Prague and Italy to Seoul and Costa Rica, Stevens students traveled across the globe to study abroad. Read excerpts from their student essays showcasing the profound impact of their journeys and immersion in new cultures and experiences.

Picture from Carlihanny Sanchez of the architecture in Prague

Carlihanny Sanchez, Class of 2026, computer science major

Embarking on my first journey to Europe was a thrilling endeavor. Prague, the enchanting capital of the Czech Republic, became not just a destination but a profound cultural immersion.

Central to this experience was the Czech language class, which not only enriched my linguistic skills but also served as a gateway to understanding the city and its people.

From the moment I arrived in Prague, I was captivated by its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. The city's architecture, blending medieval charm with elegance, created a picturesque backdrop for my cultural exploration. I felt as though I was inside a page of a storybook. Every cobblestone street seemed to whisper tales of the past, inviting me to delve deeper into its mysteries. I wanted to become a part of the city and discover every hidden gem. I spent countless days getting lost in its magic, wandering from store to store, exploring all of its unique novelties.

The Czech language class, led by an exceptional professor, became the cornerstone of my experience. The immersive experience extended beyond the classroom, as I embraced every opportunity to immerse myself in Prague's cultural tapestry. From attending local festivals and concerts to exploring museums and art galleries, each moment presented a chance to deepen my understanding of Czech identity and heritage. I had the privilege of attending a four-season orchestra that took place in a beautiful cathedral.

My time in Prague left an indelible mark on my heart, igniting a desire to return and further immerse myself in the city's dynamic atmosphere. Beyond the enchanting façade of tourist attractions lies a world waiting to be explored—a world of career opportunities, cultural exchange and personal growth.

Bryan Villalta in Italy during study abroad

Bryan Villalta, Class of 2024, mechanical engineering major

When I arrived in Florence, I was in awe. I was just looking outside the window of the car, and I couldn’t believe I was actually in Italy. My program was based in Florence, which is a city with a lot of history. Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance. It is filled with art museums, such as the Uffizi and the Accademia Gallery, and there is even art out in the public. In the Piazza della Signoria, there are statues outdoors for the public to see. It's as if the art is part of the city, and it shows the importance of art in the city.

The class I took was “Cultural Introduction to Italy.” I enjoyed learning about Italian culture. It was extremely interesting, especially being in the actual country because I was able to see what I was learning about as soon as I stepped outside of the classroom. It was as if the city was a classroom, and it made it feel as if I wasn’t taking a class but exploring a culture.

Exploring Florence and Italy was amazing. Navigating a foreign environment encouraged independence and resilience. Overcoming challenges, such as adapting to a new lifestyle, strengthened my interpersonal and intercultural skills. This experience has instilled in me a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives, fostering a global mindset that I will carry forward in both my personal and professional endeavors.

Even though I study engineering, this mindset is important because of how connected the world is today. This transformative experience has not only enriched my academic journey but has left an indelible mark on my identity and aspirations.

Nataly Jimenez Cruz in Seoul

Nataly Jimenez Cruz, Class of 2025, computer science major

After a very long 16-hour flight, two-hour wait in the airport and a one-hour drive to Korea University’s Anam International House, I was ready to begin the next three weeks of what I had not known at the time, would be one of the most influential times of my life.

I had made my first few friends from my TEAN (The Education Abroad Network) program, and we decided to get breakfast at Ediya Cafe, a Sanrio-based cafe near campus. We spoke about what classes we were taking at Korea University. We decided to go to Gangnam, one of the most trendy places to visit in Seoul. Riding on the Seoul Metro was daunting at first, but luckily someone in our group had been to South Korea before and taught us how it worked in order to arrive at Gangnam. We arrived at the famous Starfield Coex Mall, the largest underground shopping mall in all of Asia. By the entrance was an iconic statue of hands representing the Gangnam Style dance. The mall had a beautiful two-story library, with shelves reaching the ceiling of the mall and a large Christmas tree placed right at the center.

On New Year’s Eve, TEAN rented out traditional hanboks for our group to wear and walk around the Gyeongbokgung Palace. I chose a beautiful maroon skirt covered with gold-patterned snowflakes and a white and gold jacket. At the palace, all around, the scenes were jaw-dropping, and the various structures felt like I was amidst Korean history. It had snowed the day before, so the entire landmark was covered in snow, feeling like a winter wonderland.

On the last day, Korea University had invited us to a graduation ceremony in the grand Inchon Memorial Hall. During the ceremony, I looked back at everything, the new food I tried, new places and music I discovered, the friends I had made, the sights I had seen. Korea had become a part of me and my journey in life. I made tons of new memories that will stay with me forever, created connections and friendships, and was able to adjust to an unfamiliar but beautiful culture, perceiving life in a new way.

Samuel Franco in Costa Rica

COSTA RICA

Samuel franco, class of 2025, electrical engineering major .

One of the highlights of my time in Costa Rica was the exploration of the Tenorio Volcano National Park, a hike in an area called Cerro de la Muerte. The park, located in the Guanacaste volcanic mountain range, was both a tourist attraction as well as a sanctuary for regional wildlife. The guide took us through this incredibly thick and rough trail, no more than two feet wide at all times. The trail was also very muddy, and it felt like we were just traversing through the midst of the forest. After hours of hiking, we finally made it to the top where we were able to see the most beautiful view of one of Costa Rica's mountain ranges.

Costa Rica's economic dependency, primarily on fertile land and rainfall, became a focal point during my research on the country's ecological landscape. The reliance on crops like coffee and pineapples for export, coupled with the impact of climate change on these crops, demonstrated the vulnerability of the economy. The intricacies between environmental conditions and economic prosperity became more and more clear the more I researched.

My time in Costa Rica was also enriched by cultural immersion. By exploring local cuisines, such as the traditional dishes of Casado and especially Gallo Pinto (rice and beans), I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the amiableness of the people. Through this immersion, the spirit of Pura Vida, the Costa Rican philosophy of a pure and simple life, resonated deeply. The emphasis on peace, environmental consciousness and community harmony became palpable in every interaction, leaving an indelible mark on my understanding of cultural values.

This journey has broadened my understanding of the complexities and interconnections of culture and nature and has also instilled a profound appreciation for Costa Rica's commitment to environmental conservation and global cooperation. Reflecting on the beautiful views, I realized that this experience has not only expanded my knowledge but has also left quite a mark on my world view. Costa Rica, with its rich biodiversity, warm hospitality and cultural richness, has become a memory and experience that I won't soon forget as I hope to revisit again one day.

Traditional Pathway Program Admission Requirements

Admission to the University of Colorado College of Nursing's Traditional bachelor of science program (TRAD) is competitive. To keep the selection process fair, admission requirements are definitive and applied to each application in the same manner. Please keep in mind that applications are not reviewed until they are received by the application deadline and coded as ‘verified’ in NursingCAS.

Students requiring an F-1 visa are encouraged to contact the Office of International Admission prior to starting the TRAD application

Minimum TRAD Admissions Requirements

How to Apply

  • Earned grades in the prerequisite courses, as detailed below. These courses must be earned from a regionally accredited institution with a grade of C or higher. A minimum 3.0 prerequisite GPA is required. This prerequisite GPA only includes the highest grade attempts for courses listed on transcripts at the time of application. If your outstanding course(s) drops your prerequisite GPA to below a 3.0, your offer of admission will be withdrawn. Prerequisite courses must be completed within 10 years of the application deadline . We strongly suggest a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Note that the overall GPA calculation includes all previous course attempts from regionally accredited institutions, regardless of the year courses were completed. Grade forgiveness and repeat/delete policies are not honored for the overall cumulative GPA.

Applicants without a bachelor's degree are required to complete a total of 60 semester credits (or 90 quarter credits) from a regionally accredited institution. You may take a maximum of 18 semester credits (12 quarter credits), the semester before you start the program. Of these 18 semester credits (12 quarter credits), only one course can be from Anatomy, Chemistry, Physiology, or Microbiology.

The required courses include: (view BS prerequisite descriptions and track your prerequisite progress )

Watch our video guide on prerequisite information.

  • Human Anatomy (or A&P I)
  • Human Physiology (A&P II)
  • Microbiology
  • General Chemistry*
  • College Algebra
  • General Sociology
  • General Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Cultural Anthropology or Multicultural Studies
  • English Composition II
  • Creative Arts
  • Two from Foreign Language, History, Microeconomics, Philosophy, or Political Science (courses must be from two different content areas)

*One of these science lectures must have an accompanying lab.

Note: Prerequisites alone often do not total 60 semester (or 90 quarter) credit hours. Some electives may be necessary. Elective credit hours may be selected from most major academic disciplines. Examples of exceptions are commercial or vocational courses, doctrinal courses in religion, and physical education activity courses.

Applicants with a bachelor's degree are only required to complete five prerequisite courses listed below. Only two of the following prerequisites may be taken the semester before you begin the program: 1) statistics and 2) one course from anatomy, chemistry, physiology, or microbiology.

  • General Chemistry

Note: Degrees have no expiration date, but need to be posted on your transcripts the semester before you start the program.

  • International credential evaluation for degrees earned outside of the United States. To request an evaluation of a foreign degree, a prospective student should submit copies of their diploma and transcripts to [email protected] .
  • English language proficiency (see Additional Requirements below)
  • Letter of good academic standing if you have previously attended or are transferring from another nursing program.
  • Meet the minimum requirements outlined in the Technical Standards for admission, progression, and graduation.

How to Apply/Application Materials

  • Complete the application and pay the required application fee. Note that there are two fees associated with the application (NursingCAS and CU Nursing). Both must be paid for an application to be considered complete.
  • Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended directly to NursingCAS. Official transcripts from all institutions must be sent regardless of years attended, the number of credits enrolled, or grades earned. This includes any concurrent/dual enrollment courses you took in high school; you must submit official transcripts for any post-secondary school(s) from which you earned college credit while in high school. Submitting transcripts is a two-step process:
  • Order your official transcripts in NursingCAS and submit them directly to NursingCAS.
  • Enter all courses from each transcript into NursingCAS; this includes the school name, course name, course code, grade, credit number, and term completed. Applicants have the option to pay for this service offered by NursingCAS and is available on the transcript entry page in the application. Failing to accurately report can result in an application being withdrawn from admissions consideration.
  • Three professional or academic references (at least one academic reference is recommended). The NursingCAS application will ask for the contact information for your three references. References will be contacted by NursingCAS to complete an online Likert-scale reference form, which is then submitted directly back to NursingCAS. Letters of reference are not accepted.
  • Personal statement responding to the following: “Given your personal background, describe your interest in nursing and what makes you special or unique.” Statements must be no more than 500 words, 12 point font, Times New Roman, double spaced, with one-inch margins.
  • Official TOEFL scores reports (international applicants only - see Additional Requirements below).

When to Apply

  • The application process often takes several weeks (including entering courses into NursingCAS, receiving recommenders' ratings, and ordering all official transcripts [domestic and foreign]), therefore applicants should allow themselves ample time to complete each section. We recommend applicants submit their applications 4 to 6 weeks prior to the application deadline. For details on deadlines, refer to undergraduate application deadlines .
  • Applications must be submitted (i.e., in a Received status) by the application deadline. After the application deadline, there is a consecutive 10-day grace period which allows for: all references to reach a Completed status, all official transcripts to be received by NursingCAS, and the application to reach Verified Status. After this grace period, applications not in a Verified status and/or without these required supporting documents will not move forward in the application process. Learn more about your application status .

What to do After Applying

  • Once any additional course(s) currently being taken are completed, a final official transcript must be received in NursingCAS, and course information manually entered, using the Academic Update feature. See more information on the Academic Update process and timeframe in NursingCAS.
  • Make sure your application is listed in Verified status. Verified status means the application has been received and transcripts have been delivered and determined to be accurate and complete. Learn more about your application status .
  • You must be available for the interview and orientation dates listed in the NursingCAS application. The interview dates are not negotiable.
  • If any academic history (grades, courses, student standing, etc.) has changed after your application has reached Verified status, you may do an Academic Update in NursingCAS. See more information on the Academic Update process and timeframe in NursingCAS.

Interview Selection

A select number of students will be invited to interview for a position in the TRAD cohort. The admission interview consists of program presentations, individual and group interview activities.

Admissions Notifications

All admission notifications are delivered by email to the address listed in NursingCAS. Admission decisions are generally admitted, waitlist, or deny. All admits are given 10 consecutive days to respond to the offer of admission. Failure to respond to the offer will result in administrative withdrawal. An enrollment deposit is not required.

Students placed on the waitlist are notified by phone if space becomes available. The waitlist ranks are not provided.

Pre-enrollment Requirements

All students at CU Nursing are admitted conditionally pending successful completion/passing of the pre-enrollment requirements including, but not limited to background checks, drug screens (including marijuana), immunizations, etc. Prospective students who have criminal convictions (or pending criminal activity) are encouraged to contact an admissions representative prior to applying. If criminal history or a pending criminal charge prohibits the possibility of clinical placements, admission will be rescinded/denied.

Admitted students should not start any of the pre-enrollment requirements until properly informed and instructed to do so. Many of the pre-enrollment requirements are timed and starting items prematurely can result in a financial loss to the student.

Admitted students are considered CU Nursing students and are held to all policy and procedures that govern the university and college.

Pass/Fail Credit

  • COVID-19 Exception for Prerequisite Courses - The CU College of Nursing's strong recommendation is that students choose to have standard grades listed on their transcript and not the Pass/Fail grade option. However, for courses completed in Spring 2020 only, Passing (P) or Satisfactory (S) grades may be accepted to fulfill prerequisite courses, provided the P or S indicates that the student has earned a C grade or higher. For GPA calculation purposes, an approved P or S course grade will be converted to the lowest score associated with the P or S by the sending institution (e.g. a C grade will be calculated as a 2.0). For spring 2020 grades only, the student, via the sending institution, will have the option of submitting the underlying/actual grade earned, e.g. A, B, etc., which will be used in the GPA calculation for review purposes. There will not be a cap to the total number of prerequisite credits that may be taken on a P/F or S/U basis for spring 2020 coursework, provided that the aforementioned criteria are satisfied.

Foreign Transcripts and Study Abroad Credits

Transcripts for all foreign (non-study abroad) coursework must be submitted directly to the University of Colorado College of Nursing for evaluation through the Office of International Affairs. Transcripts for study abroad coursework from a non-U.S. institution may be required depending on how foreign coursework is posted on the domestic (receiving institution) transcript. If all course information (course title, credits hours and grades) is posted to the domestic transcript, applicants do not need to submit a separate transcript from the study abroad institution. If any course information is incomplete, or the grades are posed as Pass/Fail, a transcript for the study abroad coursework will need to be submitted directly to the University of Colorado College of Nursing Office of Admissions & Student Affairs .

English Language Proficiency

Due to the clinical nature of the nursing profession, all students must meet the following communication standards, as outlined in the Technical Standards of our Student Handbook :

  • A student must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English with clients, teachers and all members of the health care team. Written and oral communication must use standard, professional medical terminology.
  • He/she must communicate with clients clearly and effectively in English to elicit information regarding history, emotional status and activity, and to perceive nonverbal communications.
  • Communication includes speech, hearing, reading, writing and computer literacy.
  • A student must be able to clearly and effectively report in English to members of the health care team. Additionally, students must be able to relay appropriate information to clients, as well as teach, explain, direct and counsel a wide variety of individuals.
  • In some instances the student will be required to provide clear, direct communication in English during highly stressful, crisis situations. These skills necessitate a strong command of the English language and prompt, timely interpretation of pertinent patient data.
  • Students must be able to communicate online in a timely, professional manner, e.g., enter an electronic medical record immediately after the patient visit.

If your primary language is not English, or if you are an International Student, you will need to demonstrate required English language proficiency by meeting one of the following criteria:

  • You are a citizen of a country whose official language is English including Australia, Belize, Botswana, Canada (except Quebec), Commonwealth Caribbean, Ghana, United Kingdom, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
  • You have obtained a total score of at least 560 on the paper-based TOEFL and 50 or above on the Test of Spoken English (TSE); a score of 83 on the Internet-based TOEFL with 26 or above on the spoken English section. For other minimum subscores see internationaladmissions.ucdenver.edu . The College of Nursing TOEFL Exam Code is 3377. Be sure to use this code when registering for the exam to ensure that we will receive the results.
  • You have obtained a total score of 6.5 on IELTS with a minimum speaking subscore of 8. Official IELTS scores must be sent directly to the College of Nursing.
  • You have graduated from the University of Colorado Denver’s ESL Academy.
  • You have graduated from a US/UK accredited school abroad with English as the medium of instruction.
  • You have earned a Bachelor’s degree in the U.S. or you have successfully completed a minimum of 2 semesters of full-time study in a master’s program at an accredited institution in the U.S.

Previous Enrollment in a Nursing Program

Applicants who were previously enrolled in another nursing program (prerequisite courses excluded) are required to submit a letter of good standing from the previous school indicating that the student left in good academic standing. Documentation can be sent to [email protected] and will also need to be included in the NursingCAS application profile.

Technical Standards

All College of Nursing students must meet the minimum requirements outlined in the Technical Standards for admission, progression and graduation.

Healthcare Experience Recommended

Healthcare experience is not an admissions requirement for the Traditional Pathway. However, it is strongly recommended that applicants have exposure to the nursing field so that they better understand the expectations for this career path. Applicants are encouraged to include information about healthcare experience in their resume and the Experiences section in NursingCAS.

Disadvantage

Today, an increasing number of students are opting to study at higher education institutions in other countries. Personally, the benefits of this trend are outweighed by its negatives, since the costs of abroad education and cultural differences might be substantial.

On the one hand, education in another country is an excellent way to advance oneself and learn about new cultures. Regarding the former, encountering diverse lifestyles and responses to everyday challenges can assist individuals in developing character as well as habits that are essential for success in life, thus improving their personal development. Moreover, living abroad forces people to rely on themselves and become more self-reliant , emphasizing the need for self-discipline and commitment to the objective they have set for themselves. Furthermore, cultural diversity might provide fresh perspectives on life. Studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity to interact with new people, learn about different ethnicity, and widen one's horizons .

On the other hand, living abroad has drawbacks such as increased living costs and cultural barriers . Firstly, the cost of studying abroad can quickly accumulate . Although tuition and living expenses might vary based on location, these costs are often considerable since the most desirable places for study are often first-world countries. Furthermore, expenditures, such as food and transportation, are unavoidable to live comfortably. Another downside involves cultural differences, which might make it harder to acclimatize due to the host country's various norms and practices. Although they may appear to be minor annoyances , different cultural values might aggravate a foreigner. For instance, a misinterpretation of friendliness and a sense of rejection can lead to isolation and loneliness.

In conclusion, I feel the drawbacks of studying overseas exceed the benefits, considering the expensive costs of international education and the large cultural gaps.

benefits of study abroad essay

Today, more and more students are choosing to attend higher education programs abroad. From my perspective, the benefits of this trend outweigh its negatives, living in another country provides a wider perspective of the world which leads to improved confidence.

On the one hand, studying overseas brings drawbacks such as culture shock and its reverse effect. First and foremost, because of the host country's diverse norms and practices, culture shock can make it difficult for newcomers to adapt to the unfamiliar way of life. Unless students have already mastered the host country's language proficiency, they might not be able to comprehend or communicate with locals and could experience difficulty speaking with other students. Furthermore, reverse culture shock also exists. Returning home after adjusting to their study abroad place might still be difficult. As students and their home countries both change when living overseas, this makes it challenging for them to readjust to their new surroundings when they return home.

Overseas education, on the other hand, is an excellent way to boost one's self-esteem and perspective on the world. To begin with, acquiring a global perspective is a vital aspect of the educational journey. Individuals who study abroad have the opportunity to learn about other cultures and subjects in completely different settings. Students will also be able to experience everything that the new culture has to offer, giving them a deeper understanding of what it is like to live there. Secondly, studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to live life outside of one's comfort zone. The confidence gained will be invaluable in dealing with any challenging situations that may be encountered in the future.

In conclusion, the benefits of this phenomenon, in my opinion, outweigh the drawbacks because living in another country provides a larger perspective of the world, which leads to improved confidence.

(500 Words Essay on Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat in Hindi)
