Step 4. Copy and paste the ChatGPT output into the AI tool

Since we're using Gamma for this example, here's what we'll do:

• In Gamma, choose “ Paste in text .” You already have the outline from ChatGPT.
• Copy and paste the ChatGPT prompt and click “ Continue .”
• Set the number of “ Cards ” to match your slides.
• Click “ Continue ”.

Step 5. Generate and Refine Your PowerPoint Presentation

• Select your favorite theme and click “ Generate .”
• Wait a moment while Gamma AI generates the presentation.

After creating your presentation outline and slide notes, it's time to bring your PowerPoint to life with visually captivating illustrations. MidJourney is a superb tool to help you with this, if you're looking for something artistic to have in your presentation. It won't however help you with a pie-chart or histogram, but you can make some pretty impactful imagery to represent a specific vibe or theme.

For our small demo here, we'll start with a basic prompt, in this case, "computer technician working on a computer corporate cartoon."

As you can see, MidJourney gives us four images that are all candidates for our presentation. You can click the corresponding "U" button to upscale any of the individual images in the grid. U1 and U2 represent the top row of images, and U3 and U4 the bottom two.

You don't need to know any advanced MidJourney commands and methods to make neat imagery for your presentation, except for the custom aspect ratios.

Simply add "--ar W:H" at the end of your prompt, replacing "W" with the width and the "H" with the height.

For example, I love making slides that are split 50/50 between the text and graphic. Since slides have a 16:9 aspect ratio, it means you can use "--ar 8:9" to get something that takes up exactly half of the slide.

As of this writing, MidJourney. doesn't offer high levels of control over the images you get, but if you're particular about your images, try to use the same modifiers in your prompt. For example, we used "corporate cartoon" in the previous prompt, and by reusing with a different subject you'll usually get images that look thematically coherent. Remember that you can keep re-rolling the prompt if you don't get what you want at first, and you can use the "V" buttons to create variations of an image that was close but not quite there.

Now that you have the text and imagery for each slide, it's time to throw it together in a slide. Now you can apply your existing knowledge of Powerpoint (or the presentation software of your choice) to polish up the look and feel of your presentation.

Armed with this basic knowledge, you can use these AI tools to up your presentation same significantly, but there are some additional tips and tricks you can keep in mind for even better results:

I am using Mac. When I try to add API key in the dialog box, it only adds the letter 'v'. The shortcut for Past in Mac is Command+V, so I think it is not recognising Command key. Please help.

You can think of it as an official version of ChatGPT created by PowerPoint itself; it doesn’t get more advanced than that! But that doesn’t stop it from connecting with third-party builders like Google Slides either.

There’s a flat recurring fee of $30 a month, and that’s it! It integrates with all of your office applications, and brings Microsoft’s enterprise-grade security, privacy, and compliance with it.

How to Use Copilot in PowerPoint

• Enable and Access Copilot : Ensure you have an active Microsoft 365 subscription and the latest version of PowerPoint installed. Copilot is accessible via the ribbon in the Home tab. Simply click on the Copilot button to open the Copilot panel.

• From Scratch : Select the “Create a presentation about…” option in the Copilot menu, enter your topic, and let Copilot generate a draft for you.
• From Templates : You can also use existing themes or templates. Copilot will generate slides based on the template, maintaining the design aesthetics you choose.

• Editing and Enhancing Presentations : Use Copilot to refine your presentation by asking it to summarize content, add new sections, or suggest design improvements. You can also regenerate slides if the initial output doesn’t meet your expectations.
• Create Presentations from Prompts : With Microsoft Copilot, you can generate entire presentations by simply providing a prompt. For instance, you can ask Copilot to create a presentation about “hybrid meeting best practices,” and it will draft slides, apply layouts, and even suggest speaker notes.
• Use Existing Files : Copilot can also create presentations from existing documents, such as Word files or PDFs. This feature is particularly useful for turning reports or detailed documents into engaging presentations.

How to enable Copilot in PowerPoint (Easy guide with screenshots)

Learn the quickest way to find, purchase, and enable Microsoft Copilot and use AI tools in PowerPoint

If you’re reading this page, you’re one of many frustrated users struggling with what should be a basic task: enabling Copilot in PowerPoint. 

Believe it or not, enabling PowerPoint is a common issue that stems from a confusing design that makes it hard to purchase its very own AI companion. We’ve been there too, and it took us a bit of time to navigate Microsoft’s many account, profile, and sales pages to finally come up with a quick way of launching Copilot in PowerPoint and other Microsoft 365 apps. 

To make your life easier, we’ll walk you through the crucial steps of subscribing to the right Copilot plan, after which the companion icon should appear on your PowerPoint ribbon. We’ll also explain how to make a presentation quickly with Copilot, and show you an AI alternative that could be a better fit for creating more professional slide decks. 

How to subscribe to Copilot Pro from your Microsoft 365 account

Before you can use Copilot in PowerPoint (or any other Microsoft app), you’ll need a Copilot Pro subscription — the regular Copilot does not work in PowerPoint. The process can get a bit convoluted, so we’ll explain it in detail below.

• Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account , and click on the circle with your initials in the top right corner. In the menu that opens, click on “My Microsoft account”. 

• Find and subscribe to Copilot Pro in your Microsoft account. Hopefully, you’ll see a large icon with a button that says “Try Copilot Pro” or “Get Copilot Pro.” If you do, click on it and subscribe to the service. 

Can’t see Copilot Pro in your Microsoft 365 account? Here’s what you do

Sometimes, you won’t see any buttons or icons labeled “Copilot Pro” in your Microsoft 365 account, even though the regular (free) Copilot may show up. In this case, don’t waste your time sifting through the Microsoft account in hopes of finding the elusive AI tool. Instead, simply type “Copilot Pro” in Google search and click on the “Copilot Pro Plan & Pricing” result . 

You should finally see a window that invites you to try Microsoft’s premium AI assistant, so go ahead and click “Start your free trial,” then subscribe to the service.  

Once you see the screen below, Copilot Pro should become available in your PowerPoint app. 

How to enable Copilot Pro in the web-based PowerPoint app

• Restart PowerPoint. After signing up for Copilot Pro, it’s best to restart Microsoft 365. Once you’ve signed out and back in, go ahead and open the PowerPoint app:

• Look for Copilot on the ribbon. The Copilot icon should show up on the right hand side on both the Single Line Ribbon:

You’ve now enabled Copilot on your PowerPoint app! Go ahead and launch it by clicking on the Copilot button. 

How to enable Copilot on the PowerPoint desktop app

Once you’ve subscribed, the Copilot icon should show up on the desktop PowerPoint app as well. Simply restart the program, then look for Copilot on the ribbon: 

Now you can click on the Copilot icon and start using the assistant to make PowerPoint presentations. 

Using Copilot to create PowerPoint presentations

With Copilot Pro, you can auto-generate PowerPoint presentations using AI. 

Here’s how: 

•   Launch Copilot in PowerPoint by clicking on the corresponding icon in the ribbon. 

• Choose “Create a presentation about” in the Copilot interface. Then, enter a prompt describing the presentation in the Copilot chat window:

• Review the slide deck. Your presentation should show up in a few minutes. At this point, you can review the slide content and imagery for accuracy and relevance — this is an important step you shouldn’t skip. The deck may look sleek at a glance, but the content may be a bit simplistic and repetitive, and the images may be less relevant than you’d want them to be (or absent altogether):

Best PowerPoint AI slide maker alternative to Copilot 

Copilot is a decent starting point tool for making AI presentations. However, if you feel like the Copilot slides don't meet the bar of professionalism you need for a work or school presentation, try out Plus AI.

FAQs on using Copilot in PowerPoint

Why can’t i see the copilot icon in powerpoint .

Here are three possible reasons you don’t see the Copilot icon in PowerPoint: 

• You don’t have a Pro subscription: The free version of Copilot comes with Microsoft 365. However, to get the AI assistant working in PowerPoint (or other apps in the Microsoft ecosystem) you’ll need to upgrade to the paid Pro version. 
• You haven’t restarted PowerPoint after subscribing: Once you’ve subscribed to Copilot Pro, you need to restart PowerPoint; otherwise, the AI assistant may not show up on the slide maker’s ribbon. 
• Your desktop PowerPoint app is out of date: Copilot may fail to show up if your PowerPoint app hasn’t updated. Make sure your settings allow automatic updates to avoid this scenario. 

How to get access to Microsoft Copilot? 

You can get access to both the free Copilot and the paid Copilot Pro version through your Microsoft 365 account . Log into Microsoft 365, click on your initials in the top right corner, then follow the “My Microsoft account” link in the menu that appears. Copilot should show up on the page that opens. 

If you already have the Pro subscription, you can also access Copilot from the top ribbon of PowerPoint, Excel, and other apps in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. 

Is Copilot free with Microsoft 365? 

There is a free version of Copilot that included with a Microsoft 365 subscription. This free AI assistant functions as a chatbot that can answer basic queries and create images. 

However, the free Copilot does not work in apps such as PowerPoint. If you want an AI companion to help you make PowerPoint presentations, you’ll need to subscribe to Copilot Pro, which costs $30/month for business use.

Speaker 1: It's just so awesome seeing all the AI tools come out to help scientists, and this is another one that I think can help you. It's called MidJourney. MidJourney is an AI image processing and creation AI, and it is doing amazing things, and this is how I think it can help you design research posters, get some awesome images for anything that is, you know, at a conference that you're presenting. Here is how we do it. Okay, so over here we've got MidJourney. MidJourney.com. If we reload, you can see, oh, they've got fancy, nice animations, but ultimately, if we click on the showcase here, this is the sort of image that it is capable of producing, and that's just absolutely insane to me. But of course, my first kind of thought was, well, how can this help scientists? So at first, I went over and I started to ask it to produce poster templates, and to be honest with you, it wasn't very good, but then I had an amazing thought. So all I had to do was head over to our best friend, ChatGPT. So over here, I just said, create a prompt for AI to create a research poster template, and this is what it said. Design a visually appealing and informative research poster, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and I copied and pasted that prompt into MidJourney. So here, you can see it's actually done a pretty good job at producing a research poster. There's probably two designs on here that I like. The first one is this top one, this bottom one. This is also okay as well. Now, of course, if you click on it and you look in detail, you can actually sort of like read that text because it's just like weird alien text, but you can start using this to look at designs that you like, colors that you like, and it takes all of that design thinking work out, and I am no good at designing stuff, so this was perfect. So I selected this bottom one here, and there are a few options. You can upscale or you can have variation. So I upscaled version four, and this is what we ended up with, a perfectly reasonable but slightly boring research poster. Now, what I can do to make sure that this is useful for me, now, in its current state, I could go into something like Photopea, and I could use content aware to remove some of the text, but really, that's not really useful at the moment. I think the best way of using this at the moment is to extract the colors and use your favorite design app, whether it's PowerPoint, whether or not it's Canva, whether or not it's Photoshop, whatever it is, but it's about using this as inspiration for your work and your poster. So there's a couple of ways that we can do this. I headed over to html-color.codes, and what you can do is drag and drop an image in, and then you can just select the colors, and you can see that the colors turn up here, which is fantastic if you're like me and have no idea about design and colors. You can get the colors, and this becomes now your design palette, which is really, really simple and easy to use. Now, the thing is is that if we head back to the Discord chat for mid-journey, I asked it here to produce some other ones for me, and so this is pretty bad, I think. It's very cluttered. There's lots going on. Maybe this one is the best one. So let me just show you very quickly how you can go through that entire process. So if we head over to chat GPT, and we say create a prompt for an AI to create a science research poster with limited colors, let's see what happens there. Here we're just going to get a nice little prompt. No more than three to four colors. Okay, good. So it should include blah, blah, blah, all of that, optimize the use of these limited colors along with the appropriate fonts, graphics, and white space to create a visually appealing, ooh, I like that. So we're going to grab all of that, and we're going to go over to mid-journey, and you type in forward slash imagine, which is a prompt, and then you put in your prompt, and then like all AI tools, it's a case of waiting. Okay, when it first pops up, you'll get this, and slowly it will kind of like render the four images, the four options that you've got. And to be honest, I've not had an issue when using chat GPT to create a prompt for a science poster. When I was trying to do it on my own, I think I was just overthinking it. But here we can see, all right, what's it done? It's done not too bad of a job, too crazy, a little bit crazy. Okay, maybe this fourth one is the best one for us at the moment. It's got obvious areas that we can sort of like put data. It's got headings. So maybe this is the best one. But once again, you can just sort of like try different prompts until you find ones that you like. And also I can say, okay, well, I like this fourth one. Give me variations on that fourth one. So I click V4, and now I kind of start, yeah, just generating those styles very similar to that and heading down sort of the direction that I want this to take. Oh, it never looks good when it first pops up, by the way. I always get a little bit scared. But ultimately, once it's all done, we can click open and then just make a decision on which ones we like. Okay, so I kind of like this fourth one. I like that here we could put away, put like an image or some like takeaway key messages. Here is where we can have the data. And so overall, it's done a pretty good job. But overall, okay, I like version, what's that, three. So I'm going to upscale and that's the U. I'm going to upscale image three and then we're going to put it into the color code finder thing. All I have to do here is go to open in browser. Then it kicks out this massive image and then I can just go here and say save image as and then I'm going to save it at my desktop. And then all I have to do is go over to this color codes from images. That's html-color.codes and I just need to sort of like put in my poster design. So let's put that in there and it will say, well, here's some common colors and this is probably a good palette to start with. But if you wanted specific ones, you could go and just click. Okay, I want this one. I want this one. I want this one and I like this blue and I like the dark blue. Okay, and there's your limited sort of color palette. You want to stick to sort of like, you know, three to five colors but that's about it. Now that's really good. It's giving you design things but Mid Journey does so much better. Just watch this. Posters need to be visually attractive and that will draw people to your poster as they're wobbling around drunk in the conference poster session. So I like to look and put in, you know, research posters into Google and look, this one clearly is very visually appealing. Now I know who made this. This is from Animate Your Science, Tulio Rossi and I really like that he's got this massive image here. It really draws you to the poster. So we can now use Mid Journey to create an awesome image for our research poster. So let's have a look at the showcase and see what styles we've got. I want something a little bit just simple, nothing too cartoony, maybe a bit blocky. So how about something, no, what do I like? Come on Stakes, make a decision. There's so many good things. So let's go here. I want this style and I can see the prompt here and it's in the style of Emiliano Ponzi. Okay, so I'm going to take that and I'm going to say, let's say I want solar cells. So I'm going to go imagine give me a solar cell in the style of Emiliano Ponzi in blue and yellow illuminated by the sun. Okay, some spelling mistakes, but we got there. All right, it's actually done a bloody great job. So I can see myself using this one as a really nice feature image. Maybe not this one, not this one. So let's have a look at more variations of number one. And the great thing is you can do this with all sorts of different styles. You can do it with an artist that you really like. You can do it with a style that you found. All right, so here are the different ones it's kicked out. And as you can see, they're all pretty similar and then it's up to me to choose the best one that I want to include on my poster as the feature image. Now, the thing is, is that you are only limited by your imagination for this and I can see AI becoming a very important tool, not only in terms of helping scientists find literature and write stuff, but also in designing really captivating, attention-grabbing posters. You can even put this into PowerPoint presentations. You can even ask Midjourney to create a simple PowerPoint presentation template for you using the similar process of getting chat GPT to do a prompt and then putting it into Midjourney. The combinations and the ability to sort of like design is just got so much easier and I think you should start using this in your workflow when you are creating posters, when you're creating presentations, anything that needs to be visually appealing while you're presenting your research. Use this. So that's how you can use AI to help you communicate your science and produce research posters, produce PowerPoint templates and importantly, produce that one real important eye-grabbing image that you can put on your poster and it's just got easier. Now, Midjourney has got a free sort of like version but I paid to get more access to their program and their AI. So there is a free one that you can use and once you pass that limit, you do need to pay but completely worth it and for a lot of you to be honest, I think the free version is all you'll really need. Honestly, I was skeptical of ChatGPT for such purposes, thinking it didn’t live up to the hype. Then I realized the problem isn’t the tool — it’s how one uses it.

ChatGPT can be a helping hand in different stages of the UX design process. Here are some specific use cases:

1. Ideation and Brainstorming

When creating a new mobile app, ChatGPT can suggest cool features like voice controls, personalized recommendations, or game-like elements.

For a website redesign, it can help by proposing different layouts, color schemes, types of images, and fonts, so you can easily compare your options.

6 ways to write better ChatGPT prompts - and get the results you want faster

ChatGPT is the generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool that's taken the world by storm. While there's always the possibility it will simply make stuff up , there's a lot you can do when crafting prompts to ensure the best possible outcome. That's what we'll be exploring in this how-to.

In this article, I'll show you how to write prompts that encourage the large language model (LLM) that powers  ChatGPT to provide the best possible answers.

Writing effective prompts, known as prompt engineering, has even become a  highly-paid discipline . Who knows? These tips could help you build the skills to become a prompt engineer. Apparently, these gigs can pay from $175,000 to $335,000 per year.  

How to write effective ChatGPT prompts

1. talk to the ai like you would a person.

One of the more interesting things I had to get used to when working with ChatGPT is that you don't program it; you talk to it. As a formally trained programmer, I've had to abandon many habits when engaging with AI. Talking to it (and with it) requires a mindset shift.

When I say talk to it like a person, I mean talk to it like you would a coworker or team member. If that's hard to do, give it a name. Alexa is taken, so maybe think of it as Bob. This naming helps because when you talk to Bob, you might include conversational details and anecdotes that give your story texture.

When you're talking to a person, it would be natural for them to miss your point initially and require clarification or veer away from the topic at hand and need to be wrangled back. You might need to fill in the backstory for them or restate complex questions based on the answers they give you. 

This is called interactive prompting. Don't be afraid to ask ChatGPT multi-step questions: ask, get a response, and based on that response, ask another question. I've done this myself, sometimes 10 or 20 times in a row, and gotten very powerful results. Think of this as having a conversation with ChatGPT.

2. Set the stage and provide context

Writing a ChatGPT prompt is more than just asking a one-sentence question. It often involves providing relevant background information to set the context of the query.

Let's say that you want to prepare for a marathon (for the record, I do not run, dance, or jump -- this is merely an example). You could ask ChatGPT:

How can I prepare for a marathon?

However, you'll get a far more nuanced answer if you add that you're training for your first marathon. Try this instead: 

I am a beginner runner and have never run a marathon before, but I want to complete one in six months. How can I prepare for a marathon?

By giving the AI more information, you're helping it return a more focused answer.  Here are two more examples of questions that provide context:

I am planning to travel to Spain in a few months and would like to learn some basic Spanish to help me communicate with local residents. I am looking for online resources that are suitable for beginners and provide a structured and comprehensive approach to learning the language. Can you recommend some online resources for learning Spanish as a beginner?

In this case, rather than just asking about learning resources, the context helps focus the AI on learning how to communicate on the ground with local residents. Here's another example: 

I am a business owner interested in exploring how blockchain technology can be used to improve supply chain efficiency and transparency. I am looking for a clear and concise explanation of the technology and examples of how it has been used in the context of supply chain management. Can you explain the concept of blockchain technology and its potential applications in supply chain management?

In this example, rather than just asking for information on blockchain and its workings, the focus is specifically on blockchain for supply chain efficiency and how it might be used in a real-world scenario.

Lastly, let's get into how to construct a detailed prompt. 

One note: I limit the answer to 500 words because ChatGPT sometimes breaks when asked to produce somewhere between 500 and 700 words, leaving stories mid-sentence and not resuming properly when asked to continue. I hope future versions provide longer answers because premises like this can generate fun story beginnings: 

Write a short story for me, no more than 500 words. The story takes place in 2339, in Boston. The entire story takes place inside a Victorian-style bookstore that wouldn't be out of place in Diagon Alley. Inside the store are the following characters, all human: The proprietor: make this person interesting and a bit unusual, give them a name and at least one skill or characteristic that influences their backstory and possibly influences the entire short story. The helper: this is a clerk in the store. His name is Todd. The customer and his friend: Two customers came into the store together, Jackson and Ophelia. Jackson is dressed as if he's going to a Steampunk convention, while Ophelia is clearly coming home from her day working in a professional office. Another customer is Evangeline, a regular customer in the store, in her mid-40s. Yet another customer is Archibald, a man who could be anywhere from 40 to 70 years old. He has a mysterious air about himself and seems both somewhat grandiose and secretive. There is something about Archibald that makes the others uncomfortable. A typical concept in retail sales is that there's always more inventory "in the back," where there's a storeroom for additional goods that might not be shown on the shelves where customers browse. The premise of this story is that there is something very unusual about this store's "in the back." Put it all together and tell something compelling and fun.

You can see how the detail provides more for the AI to work with. First, feed "Write me a story about a bookstore" into ChatGPT and see what it gives you. Then feed in the above prompt, and you'll see the difference.

3. Tell the AI to assume an identity or profession

One of ChatGPT's coolest features is that it can write from the point of view of a specific person or profession. In a previous article, I showed how you can make ChatGPT write like a pirate or Shakespeare , but you can also have it write like a teacher, a marketing executive, a fiction writer -- anyone you want.

For example, I can ask ChatGPT to describe the Amazon Echo smart home device from the point of view of a product manager, a caregiver, or a journalist in three separate prompts: 

From the point of view of its product manager, describe the Amazon Echo Alexa device. From the point of view of an adult child caring for an elderly parent, describe the Amazon Echo Alexa device. From the point of view of a journalist, describe the Amazon Echo Alexa device.

Try dropping these three prompts into ChatGPT to see its complete response. 

I've pulled a few lines from ChatGPT's responses so you can see how it interprets different perspectives.  From the product manager identity:  I can confidently say that this is one of the most innovative and revolutionary products in the smart home industry.

From the caregiver identity:  The device's ability to set reminders and alarms can be particularly helpful for elderly individuals who may have trouble remembering to take their medication or attend appointments.

And from the journalist identity:  From a journalistic perspective, the Echo has made headlines due to privacy concerns surrounding the collection and storage of user data.

You can see how different identities allow the AI to provide different perspectives as part of its response. To expand this, you can let the AI do a thought experiment. Let's look at some of the issues that went into the creation of something like Alexa:

The year is 2012. Siri has been out for the iPhone for about a year, but nothing like an Alexa smart home device has been released. The scene is an Amazon board meeting where the Echo smart assistant based on Alexa has just been proposed.  Provide the arguments, pro and con, that board members at that meeting would have been likely to discuss as part of their process of deciding whether or not to approve spending to invest in developing the device.  Feel free to also include participation by engineering design experts and product champions, if that provides more comprehensive perspective.

It's also good to know that making minor changes to your prompts can significantly change ChatGPT's response. For example, when I changed the phrase, "Provide the arguments, pro and con, that..." to "Provide the pro and con arguments as dialogue, that...," ChatGPT rewrote its answer, switching from a list of enumerated pros and cons to an actual dialogue between participants.

4. Keep ChatGPT on track

As mentioned above, ChatGPT tends to go off the rails, lose track of the discussion, or completely fabricate answers. 

There are a few techniques you can use to help keep it on track and honest.

One of my favorite things to do is ask ChatGPT to justify its responses. I'll use phrases like "Why do you think that?" or "What evidence supports your answer?" The AI will often apologize for making stuff up and come back with a new answer. Other times, it might give you some useful information about its reasoning path. In any case, don't forget to apply  the tips I provide for having ChatGPT cite sources .

If you have a fairly long conversation with ChatGPT, you'll start to notice that the AI loses the thread. Not that that's unique to AIs -- even in extended conversations with humans, someone is bound to get lost. That said, you can gently guide the AI back on track by reminding it what the topic is and what you're trying to explore.

I've had some luck by telling the AI to  re-read my prompt . Basically, the technique is to issue a prompt, then tell the AI something like: "re-read this," and follow that up with the exact prompt passed earlier. You could refine or add to the prompt if you want, and see what happens. The idea is that re-reading forces the AI to rethink and clarify what it just read.

You could refine or add to the prompt if you want, and see what happens. The idea is that re-reading forces the AI to rethink and clarify what it just read.

This may seem silly, but think about the analog in human conversation. You're talking to someone, even right in the middle of a deep conversation. But their eyes seem blank and they're expression is a million miles away. Whether they suddenly began to daydream about getting another cup of coffee or your conversation set off a long dormant memory, it's clear they're not following along.

So, you repeat your statement. Sometimes you do it with annoyance, but, "hey, did you hear me say..." is not uncommon, right? So, telling the AI, "re-read the prompt one more time: I am a beginner runner and have never run a marathon before, but I want to complete one in six months. How can I prepare for a marathon?" may bring the AI back on track and get it to become more engaged.

6. Don't be afraid to play and experiment

One of the best ways to up your skill at this craft is to play around with what the chatbot can do.

Try feeding ChatGPT a variety of interesting prompts to see what it will do with them. Then change them up and see what happens. Here are five to get you started:

• Imagine you are a raindrop falling from the sky during a thunderstorm. Describe your journey from the moment you form in the cloud to the moment you hit the ground. What do you see, feel, and experience?
• You are a toy that has been left behind in an attic for decades. Narrate your feelings, memories of playtimes past, and your hopes of being rediscovered.
• Write the final diary entry of a time traveler who has decided to settle down in a specific era, explaining why they chose that time and what they've learned from their travels.
• Imagine a dialogue between two unlikely objects, like a teacup and a wristwatch, discussing the daily routines and challenges they face.
• Describe a day in an ant colony from the perspective of an ant. Dive deep into the politics, challenges, and social structures of the ant world.

Pay attention not only to what the AI generates but how it generates what it does, what mistakes it makes, and where it seems to run into limits. All of that detail will help you expand your prompting horizons.

More prompt-writing tips 

• Feel free to re-ask the question. ChatGPT will often change its answer with each ask.
• Make small changes to your prompts to guide it into giving you a better answer.
• ChatGPT will retain its awareness of previous conversations as long as the current page is open. If you leave that page, it will lose awareness. To be clear, ChatGPT will also sometimes lose the thread of the conversation without reason, so be aware you may need to start over from time to time.
• Similarly, opening a new page will start the discussion with fresh responses.
• Be sure to specify the length of the response you want. Answers longer than about 500 words sometimes break down. 
• You can correct and clarify prompts based on how the AI answered previously. If it's misinterpreting you, you may be able to just tell it what it missed and continue.
• Rephrase questions if ChatGPT doesn't want to answer what you're asking. Use personas to elicit answers that it might not otherwise want to give.
• If you want sources cited , tell it to support or justify its answers.
• ChatGPT custom instructions are now available to free users. You can  give ChatGPT a set of prompts that are always available , so you don't have to retype them.
• Keep experimenting.
• Consider getting the ChatGPT Plus subscription . You'll get more time to interact with the AI before it shuts you down and asks you to wait for another session. 
• Try asking the same question of Gemini  (formerly Bard) or Copilot (formerly Bing Chat). Both will interpret your prompts differently and answer differently. This is effectively getting a second opinion on your prompt, and can give you alternate perspectives.
• Ask for examples. If you want to see how well ChatGPT understands what you're asking for, ask it, "Can you give me three examples of how that works?" or similar questions.
• Ask it to repeat parts of your original requests back to you. For example, if you feed it an article to analyze, you can tell it something like, "Just to be sure you understand, please echo back the first three headlines," or "I want to be sure you understand what I mean, so summarize the main conflict discussed in this article." 
• Sometimes ChatGPT just fails. Keep trying, but also be willing to give up and move on to other tools. It's not perfect...yet.

What type of prompts work best with ChatGPT? 

Part of what makes ChatGPT so compelling is you can ask it almost anything. That said, keep in mind that it's designed to provide written answers. If you want a list of websites, you're better off talking to Google.

If you want some form of computation, talk to Wolfram Alpha . Give ChatGPT open-ended prompts, encourage creativity, and don't be afraid to share personal experiences or emotions. Plus, keep in mind that the AI's knowledge ends in 2021  for ChatGPT 3.5 and December 2023 for ChatGPT 4 in ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT 4o, which is available in both Plus and free modes.

How can I adjust the complexity of ChatGPT responses?

You can directly specify the complexity level by including it in your prompt. Add "... at a high school level" or "... at a level intended for a Ph.D. to understand" to the end of your question. You can also increase the complexity of output by increasing the richness of your input. The more you provide in your prompt, the more detailed and nuanced ChatGPT's response will be. You can also include other specific instructions, like "Give me a summary," "Explain in detail," or "Provide a technical description."

You can also pre-define profiles. For example, you could say "When evaluating something for a manager, assume an individual with a four-year business college education, a lack of detailed technical understanding, and a fairly limited attention span, who likes to get answers that are clear and concise. When evaluating something for a programmer, assume considerable technical knowledge, an enjoyment of geek and science fiction references, and a desire for a complete answer. Accuracy is deeply important to programmers, so double-check your work."

If you ask ChatGPT to "explain C++ to a manager" and "explain C++ to a programmer," you'll see how the responses differ.

How can I adjust the creativity level of ChatGPT's responses?

In the same way that you can adjust the complexity level, you can adjust the creativity level. It's a matter of providing a prompt that guides the AI in that direction. For example, use "please include creative, open-ended responses" or "please provide factual, concise replies" in your prompts.

What do I do if ChatGPT refuses to answer or I don't like its answer? 

There are some guardrails built into ChatGPT. It tends to shut down if you ask it political questions, for example. That's what's built into the system. While you might be able to tease out an answer, it's probably not going to provide great value. That said, feel free to keep trying with different phrasing or perspectives.
