A superb way to begin is with some widely popular Desi dishes of Pakistan . You’ll find them available at just about any Pakistani restaurant, with few exceptions.
چکن/مٹن کڑاہی (Chicken/Mutton Karahi)
Chicken or mutton Karahi is one of the most popular main courses in Pakistani restaurants. Karahi refers to the cookware the meal is cooked (and sometimes also served) in. It’s a metal pan, often made of iron, with a flattened base.
The meat (either chicken or mutton) is fried in an open fire until tender, usually right in front of the customers. Seeing the meat cooked in front of you makes the dish more desirable. The main ingredients include:
- Chicken/Mutton (cut into small pieces)
Common spices include coriander, pepper powder, cumin seeds, and red button chilis.
The meat can be served with butter, and many Desi foodies love to have it cooked in desi ghee which makes the meal very authentically Desi. The best time to have this dish is in the evening, though it’s also served in the afternoon. Of course, روٹی ( roti ) and نان ( naan ) are Pakistani food staples that will always be present at the table. Enjoy your karahi with a crispy Roti or Nan.

Nihari, another Desi delicacy, is said to have been the recipe of the eighteenth century. It’s associated with the Nawabs of the Indian subcontinent. Since, etymologically, the word is derived from the Urdu word نہار ( nihar ) meaning “morning,” it’s clear to see that the best time to enjoy this dish is in the morning at breakfast time.
On average, it takes 6-8 hours to cook beef Nihari, though the time frame may change for lamb or chicken. This dish’s main ingredients are:
- Ginger-garlic paste
- Chili paste
- Wheat flour
The main spices are coriander, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and cardamom. Lemon, ginger, and coriander can also be used as tasty garnishes.

The first two Pakistani dishes we described are served with Roti or Nan. Now, let’s move toward something a little different: Biryani. This is a frequent main course in Pakistani homes and restaurants, easily identified by the unique aroma of Pakistani Basmati rice.
Its main ingredient is rice boiled in water, and you can add chicken, mutton, or beef depending on your preferences. This dish features a range of flavors from spices like:

- Black pepper

It’s not unusual to see whole chickens being barbecued at small ‘Sajji corners’ throughout Pakistan. Sajji is a common delicacy everywhere in the country. That said, you should expect a little bit of variation in the recipe and ingredients depending on the region.
Originally, Sajji was a Balochi dish from the nomads of Balochistan. But today, it’s just as popular among Pakistanis all over the country.

Beef is the ideal meat for this delicacy, though people may use lamb or chicken instead. It’s also worth noting that three types of lentils are used: channa , moong , and maash .
Although it looks like gravy, Hareesa is ultimately unique from other Desi gravies in its taste and texture. When it’s ready, some chefs add kababs or koftas (meatballs) to it to make it thicker. It’s then served with Roti or Naan.

One of the most popular Pakistani cuisine dishes, paye (goat/calf trotters) are often served as the main course at breakfast. پراٹھہ (Paratha)
In Pakistan, paratha is a staple food that can be used with curry in place of Roti or Naan. It can also be stuffed with potatoes or mince and eaten as a main course. It’s made by kneading wheat flour and frying it in oil or desi ghee on a traditional tawa (a Desi utensil).
Lassi is a traditional Pakistani drink, usually taken alongside breakfast. It’s prepared by blending yogurt, milk, butter, and sugar or salt.

While visiting Pakistan, never miss Halwa Poori at breakfast; it’s a real exotic specialty of Pakistani cuisine. This typical Desi breakfast consists of fried bread served with the traditional sweet dish halwa . A curry of chickpeas ( channay ) is another integral part of this meal.

1. جلیبی (Jalebi)

2. رس ملائی (Ras Malai)
Ras Malai (roughly translated to “juicy cream” in English) is a Desi Pakistani dessert consisting of milk, sugar, cream, cardamom, saffron, and pistachio.
3. گلاب جامُن (Gulab Jamun)
Gulab Jamun is known as the national sweet of Pakistan. It’s prepared with dried milk ( khoya ), oil, and flour ( maida ). It’s dipped in sugar syrup and flavors such as saffron, rose water, and cardamom are added to it.

مشاغل کی اہمیت
انسان کی زندگی میں تبدیلی کا اہم کردار ہے۔ زندگی جینے کے لیے زندگی میں تبدیلی بہت اہم ہے ورنہ انسان بہت جلد اپنے ماحول سے اُکتا جاتا ہے۔ اسی طرح جب کوئی شخص اپنے روز و شب ایک ہی طرح سے گزارے تو وہ اُکتانے لگتا ہے۔ اس کی طبیعت میں چڑچڑاپن واضح ہونے لگتا ہے۔ اس چڑچڑےپن سے بچنے کے لیے انسان کو وہ کام کرنا چاہیے جس میں وہ دلچسپی رکھتا ہو۔ اپنی پسند کے کام کرنے کی وجہ سے انسان کا وقت بھی اچھا گزرتا ہے اور اس کی طبیعت میں خوش اخلاقی کا عنصر بھی نمایاں رہتا ہے جو اس بات کا ثبوت ہے کہ : “انسان دوسروں کو وہی چیز دے سکتا ہے جو اس کے اپنے پاس ہو”
یعنی جب انسان چڑچڑا ہے تو وہ اپنے آس پاس موجود لوگوں کو کبھی بھی کوئی خوشی نہیں دے سکتا۔ اس کے برعکس اگر وہ پُرسکون ہے تو اس کے آس پاس بسنے والے بھی اس کی ذات سے خوش رہیں گے۔
ہر انسان کی طرح میرے بھی کئی مشاغل ہیں لیکن میرے فارغ وقت کا زیادہ تر حصہ میں اپنے پسندیدہ ترین مشغلے میں صرف کرتا ہوں۔ میرا پسندیدہ ترین مشغلہ “لکھنا” ہے۔ میں ہر روز کم سے کم ایک گھنٹہ لکھنے اور سوچنے پر صرف کرتا ہوں۔ مجھے اپنی سوچوں کو قرطاس پر بکھیر کر سکون و اطمینان ملتا ہے۔ ایسا سکون جو مجھے کہیں اور سے نصیب نہیں ہوسکتا ہے۔
لکھاری اور معاشرہ
ایک معاشرے میں لکھاریوں کا یوں بھی بہت اہم کردار ہوتا ہے۔ لکھاری اپنی تحریروں کے ذریعے عوام کے ضمیر کو جگا سکتے ہیں۔ اس کی سب بڑی مثال پاکستان ہے۔ سر سید احمد خان نے اردو ادب کو فروغ دے کر ہی قوم کو بیدار کیا تھا اقر علامہ محمد اقبال نے بھی اپنی قلم کے ذریعے ہی نوجوانوں میں جوش و ولولہ پیدا کیا تھا اور پھر عوام نے قائداعظم کی قیادت میں پاکستان حاصل کرلیا۔ اسی طرح یہ ایک لکھاری کی ذمہ داری ہوتی ہے کہ عوام کی توجہ معاشرتی مسائل کی جانب دلائے اور ان کے حل بھی تجویز کرے۔ میری کوشش ہوتی ہے کہ میں اپنی لکھی ہر کہانی میں ایک اصلاحی پہلو بھی اُجاگر کروں تاکہ پڑھنے والے کو اس کہانی سے کوئی سبق حاصل ہوسکے۔
میں اور قلم
لکھتے ہوئے میں اکثر اپنے ان احساسات کو بھی کاغذ پر لکھ دیتا ہوں جو میں کسی سے کہہ نہیں پاتا۔ میرا قلم میرا بہترین ساتھی ہے۔ اکثر اپنے اندر کی بےچینی کو قلم سے کاغذ پر بکھیر کر بہت سکون ملتا ہے اور اس بات کی فکر بھی نہیں ہوتی کہ کوئی میری بات سننے کے بعد مجھے کیسا سمجھے گا میرے بارے میں کیا سوچے گا۔ میرا قلم میرا بہترین ساتھی ہے اور بہترین مشغلہ بھی جس سے نہ صرف مجھے بلکہ دوسروں کو بھی فائدہ پہنچتا ہے۔ میں کبھی بھی اس مشغلے کو اپنی زندگی سے ترک نہیں کروں گا اور یوں ہی خود کو اور معاشرے کو فائدہ پہنچاتا رہوں گا۔

Man sues United Airlines after metal wire in meal gets lodged in throat

A passenger traveling from Washington Dulles International Airport to Berlin , Germany is suing United Airlines after swallowing a metal wire he says was unexpectedly lurking in his in-flight meal.
Bastian Bromse required medical intervention to extricate the item, causing “pain, agony and mental anguish,” according to a federal lawsuit filed in Chicago, where United is headquartered.
A United spokeswoman told The Independent the airline did not “have anything to share since the litigation is ongoing.”
The episode occurred on May 27, 2023, aboard United flight 234, states Bromse’s complaint, which was filed in late July. Once the aircraft reached cruising altitude, the meal service began, according to the complaint. But, it says, when Bromse tucked in, he quickly realized that something was very wrong.
Through no fault of his own, Bromse “sustained serious injuries to the inside of his throat when he swallowed a piece of wire hidden inside his airline-provided meal,” the complaint alleges. “The wire became lodged in his throat, and he was required to undergo a medical procedure to have the metal removed, which caused severe discomfort and pain.”
“As a result of the aforesaid accident… Bromse suffered pain, agony and mental anguish,” the complaint states, adding that Bromse was further “deprived of his enjoyment of life, pursuits and interests.”
He is demanding $170,000 in compensatory damages, the maximum allowed under the Montreal Convention — which governs an airline’s liability in the event of an in-flight injury — as well as a money judgment against United to be determined at trial.
Bromse is far from the only traveler to experience such an incident.
In June, a business-class passenger flying Air India from Bangalore to San Francisco said he bit down on a metal blade in the roasted sweet potato and fig chaat served with his meal.
“A few spoonfuls into the chaat, I felt something hard/metallic inside the mouth, and after chewing for two-three seconds, I spat it out into the bowl to find a blade,” Mathures Paul told The Hindu . “Obviously, I complained to the stewardess who spoke for four [or] five seconds. The conversation went something like: ‘Sorry about this and we will inform the catering team.’ She returned with a bowl of chickpea salad.”
When a passenger aboard a February 2019 Singapore Airlines flight from Melbourne, Australia to Wellington, New Zealand felt a hard object in his mouth while enjoying a forkful of rice, he soon discovered a human tooth had found its way into his meal .
“I threw my guts up,” the man told the Australian Associated Press. “For the rest of the flight I was not well. Just the idea of having someone else’s body part in my food is not nice.”
Other fliers have allegedly found hypodermic needles in their butter chicken, cockroaches in their lentil stew, and severed snake heads in their potatoes .
Bromse’s attorney, Chicago-based Brian LaCien, did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
