Blackboard (Faculty) - Groups: Create Group Assignments

  • ITS Home Page

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Knowledgebase

Blackboard's Assignment can be set up to accept group submissions. With group submissions, only one member of the group submits the assignment on behalf of all of the members. Faculty then grade the one submission and the grade is distributed to all members of the group. Instructors have the option to change any individual member's grade if necessary.

Create a Group

Groups allow smaller numbers of students to collaborate on course work. Only members of the group and the faculty can see the group.

Group Types

There are two types of group creation options:

  • Single Group - create one group at a time.
  • Group Set - create multiple groups with same settings and titles (which can be changed later).

Group Enrollment

There are three types of Group Enrollment to choose from:

  • Manual Enroll - allows you to assign each student to a group
  • Random Enroll - automatically distributes students based on number of students in each group or based on number of groups. This is only available in group sets.
  • Self Enroll - allows the student to select the group for themselves.

Create a Single Group

  • From the Control Panel, click on Users and Groups , then click Groups .
  • Click Create , then under "Single Group," select Self-Enroll or Manual Enroll .
  • Type in a group name and optional description.
  • Make sure the group is visible to students. Select Yes . Students will see their assigned group and tools below the left navigation.
  • Select the tools that you wish for your students to access.
  • Self-enroll : "Sign-up Options" - Type in a name for the signup sheet and provide instructions. "Maximum Number of Members" - Type in the maximum number of students that you wish to sign up for this group. Once the maximum number of students have signed up, the group will no longer accept additional members. Students must then select a different group.  This option prevents group membership from being unbalanced. "Create smart view for this group" - Check this box if you wish a smart view to be added to the Grade Center for this group. NOTE: Students cannot un-enroll themselves from "self-enroll" groups. OR Manual-enroll : "Create smart view for this group" - Check this box if you wish a smart view to be added to the Grade Center for this group. "Membership" - Click the Add Users button. Check the box to the left of the students names to be added to this group. Click the Submit button when you have selected all the students.
  • Click Submit at the bottom of the page.

Create a Group Set

  • Click Create , then under "Group Set," select Random Enroll, Self-Enroll or Manual Enroll .
  • Type in a group name and optional description. This group name will be distributed among all the groups with a number. For example, if you select the name "Team" the groups will be named "Team 1," "Team 2," etc. Note: The Group Set name cannot be edited once you click submit on the Create Group Set page. The group set description and individual group names can be edited.
  • Make sure the group is visible to students. Select  Yes . Students will see their assigned group and tools below the left navigation.
  • Select the tools that you wish for your students to access.
  • Random enroll : "Membership" - Determine the number of groups by the number of students per group or by the number of groups. For example, if you have 5 topics you would select "Number of groups" = 5. A course with 20 students would have 4 students in each group.  If you have one topic and you want no more than 3 students in a group, "Number of Students per Group" would be 3. A course with 20 students would have 7 groups (6 groups with 3 and one group with 2). Determine how to enroll any remaining members: Select the option for remaining members.
"Number of Groups" - designate how many groups will be created. "Create smart view for this group" - Check this box if you wish a smart view to be added to the Grade Center for this group. NOTE: Students cannot un-enroll themselves from "self-enroll" groups.
  • Manual-enroll : "Number of Groups" - designate how many groups will be created. "Create smart view for this group" - Check this box if you wish a smart view to be added to the Grade Center for this group. Students will be added in the next step.

You can create assignments within Blackboard and provide feedback using rubrics and annotations. Blackboard assignments offer greater support for group submissions and delegated marking than Turnitin assignments but have more limited annotation tools.

→ Click on the titles below to view information and guides on using Blackboard assignments.

Online assignments allow students to submit essays in Blackboard and provide you with the functionality to give detailed feedback to your students using annotations, rubrics and text. Click on the video below for a brief overview of how you can use rubrics in Blackboard assignments to provide detailed feedback to enhance student learning. A separate page is available for  Turnitin in Blackboard assignments .

If you are planning to use the Blackboard Assignments tool for summative online exams, we have an overview page on online exams giving general advice on using Blackboard Assignments, Tests and Turnitin for exams.

Notice regarding the SafeAssign Similarity Score : You can enable SafeAssign when creating a Blackboard assignment - this allows you to check a student's submission against the SafeAssign database of papers. The similarity score in the SafeAssign report is not a measure of plagiarism within a piece of work but represents where there are similarities to other sources (journals, essays, books etc.). A submission with a high similarity score might be satisfactory once the bibliography, cover sheet etc. are accounted for whereas a submission could have a low score but could be heavily paraphrasing other sources without citation.

You can use online assignments to:

• Create, manage, and circulate assignments within Blackboard for formative and summative learning
• Check for potential originality issues using a Similarity Report
• Grade using rubrics
• Manage how and when grades and feedback are released to students
• Provide video and audio feedback to students

Blackboard Vs Turnitin Assignments

This interactive guide gives an overview of the pros and cons of using Blackboard or Turnitin assignments.

Procedure: if a student has issues submitting we would advise them to contact the module instructor so there is a record of this and because the instructor would need to make a determination as to whether to allow an additional attempt based on the different circumstances. Clearing/resetting attempts needs to be done by the instructor of a particular module in the first instance. We also strongly recommend that if there are submission issues due to account/access problems etc. with an individual student, please accept the submission via email as proof of submission until the issue is resolved. If an instructor cannot resolve the issue themselves, the instructor can contact us for advice via [email protected]. We recommend therefore when you create an assignment to allow more than one attempt. More details on granting an additional attempt are available on the Blackboard website.

Video Guide:

Below is a video guide covering the steps required to create a Panopto Student Video Assignment. You can also find a text version of the instructions on this page below the video.

Instructions: Create a Panopto Student Video Submission Assignment in Blackboard

  • Choose a Location:
  • Navigate to your Blackboard module, then select a folder in the left-hand menu where you would like to add the Panopto Student Video Submission Assignment (you could create a folder called Assessments and include it there if you do not already have one).
  • Set Up the Assignment:
  • Go to the menu bar within the folder and select Assessments > Assignment .
  • Give the assignment a clear and descriptive name and enter instructions (refer to our Blackboard Assignments page for general advice on creating an assignment and the available options).
  • Enable Panopto Submission:
  • In the < Instructions > field, click the < + add content > button in the editor bar.
  • An < Add Content > pop-up window will appear. Scroll down and select the < Panopto Student Submission> option. Important Note: This will open the Panopto Student Submission window, which creates an assignment subfolder within the module's Panopto folder. Students can use this subfolder to create and edit their video recordings before submitting them. Students cannot see each other's work in this folder. When the student is ready to submit, their recording is moved from the assignment's subfolder to a Student Submissions subfolder for review and marking via the Blackboard grade centre.
  • Information for Students for recording: Student Submission
  • Students will use the Panopto Student Submission tool to record their videos.
  • They can save drafts of their work in their personal " My Folder " location within their Blackboard Panopto account to revisit the video and make edits.
  • Once they are happy with their video, students will submit it through the Panopto Student Submission tool, which will move the final version from the interim Assignments subfolder (their own my Panopto folder) to the "Student Submissions" folder. Why not show the interim subfolder? The assignments subfolder may not be visible to students as it's a subfolder of the module's parent Panopto folder, which the lecturer may have hidden as the Panopto parent folder contains the lecturers' lecture recordings, which they may not want students to see. It's recommended that students use their " My Folder " for drafts to avoid confusion.
  • Finalize the Assignment Settings:
  • Close the Panopto Student Submission window by clicking on the X button to close and the Add Content window.
  • Add any additional instructions for students in the instructions field in the assignment window. We advise that you insert the URL link to the Instruction Guide for Students Submitting their Video Assignments.
  • Set the due date, point marks (always mark out of 100 if you are using Grades Journey), and <submission details> (allowing one attempt is recommended).
  • Decide on your < marking options > and < display of marks > settings.
  • Define when the assignment will be available and for how long with the availability settings.
  • Click the Submit button to create and save the student video assignment, completing your setup.
  • Grading Submitted Videos: Grading
  • When students submit their video assignments, they will be stored within the Panopto folder (your Panopto link in the left-hand menu) –> Module Assignments –> Student Submissions Folder.
  • Review in Blackboard: The easiest way to review submissions is via the Blackboard grade centre. Clicking on the student's video assignment in the grade centre will open the video player. You click on the student video to play it back and add your points, marks, and comments to record it in the grade centre for that student's attempt. The Blackboard grade centre will be updated with your marks for the student's video assignment.
  • When drafting their submission, students create their videos in their My Folder (private to them) and can continue to edit this until they click on Submit. Once they submit their video, the file gets copied into a Student Submissions subfolder within your module's Panopto folder, thus preventing further editing. Important Note: We recommend they instead save their work-in-progress video recording to their own Panopto "My Folder" location until they are finally ready to submit the video assignment. The added advantage is that the student keeps a copy of their video recording in their My Folder Panopto account for future reference.
  • Students can only see their own submissions - not each other's by default within the Student Assignment subfolder in your module's Panopto folder.
  • The best way to grade student submissions is using the Grade Centre, as you would with a standard Blackboard assignment.
  • Steps for your students are available in the Student Help tab . There is also an  Instructor Guide: How to set up a Student Video Submission Assignment in Blackboard  available to download above to attach to the assignment.
  • Please consider the type of content students are asked to create and be mindful of potential risks associated with video assignments. Generally, the Panopto Student Video Submission option allows students to create recorded presentations. Consequently, there can potentially be data protection (GDPR) or privacy-related issues if students are asked to record videos involving themselves or third parties. Students should always be provided clear guidance and instruction before content creation. For example, avoid tasks leading to students creating videos containing sensitive or confidential information. Instructors should give students specific instructions regarding recording confidential data or special categories of personal data. Essentially, this type of data should not be recorded. For further information, please see this page on Special Category Data on the Data Protection website .
  • If a student video assignment contains personal data of other individuals (e.g., a visual or audio recording of a person or other identifiable information), the student should obtain permission/consent from relevant individuals before recording. Permission should be obtained in a recordable format and retained on file.
  • Caution should always be exercised when recording video assignments, and it may be a good idea to have students run their ideas past you if they are different from a standard presentation. Moreover, staff should review content and delete unnecessary, excessive or inappropriate data if included in a video assignment.
  • Further information is available from the College Data Protection Officer - [email protected] or via the College Data Protection website - https://www.tcd.ie/dataprotection/ .
  • Not all students will be comfortable creating and editing videos of themselves, so you should consider alternative assessments for those students who may not feel able to create a video.
  • The Student Video Submission tool is provided by Panopto as part of their video hosting solution - if College ever changes to another video hosting provider (for example, as part of a tender process approximately every five years), we cannot guarantee that the new video hosting provider will have an equivalent assignment feature - however, staff would be notified well in advance of any change and workarounds may still be possible.

Terms of Use:

Please refer to our Terms of Use document   for further guidelines and information on the Data Proctection aspects of using the Panaopto Student Video Submission Assignment option.

Below are external links and additional resources to help you get started with Blackboard Assignments.

Create an assignment

You can create assignments in content areas, learning modules, lesson plans, and folders.

In the Blackboard mobile app, assignment instructions for Original courses show after students begin an attempt.

Drag files from your computer to the "hot spot" in the Attach Files area. If your browser allows, you can also drag a folder of files. The files will upload individually. If the browser doesn't allow you to submit your assignment after you upload a folder, select Do not attach in the folder's row to remove it. You can drag the files individually and submit again.

You won't be able to drag files to upload if your institution uses an older version of Blackboard Learn.

You can use the file name or provide another name for the file.

Late assignments

When you assign a due date for an assignment, students can still submit attempts after the date passes. Submissions after the due date are marked late. If you penalize late submissions, inform students in the assignment instructions.

You can view the late label in these areas:

  • Student's submission page in the grade panel
  • Student's Grade Details page
  • Needs Grading page

Student assignment submission confirmations

When students submit assignments successfully, the Review Submission History page appears with information about their submitted assignments and a success message with a confirmation number. Students can copy and save this number as proof of their submissions and evidence for academic disputes. For assignments with multiple attempts, students receive a different number for each submission. If your institution has enabled email notifications for submission receipts, students will also receive an email with a confirmation number and other details for each submission.

You and your students won't be able to view confirmation numbers if your institution uses Blackboard Learn 9.1 Q4 2016 or earlier. Student email notifications and student access to receipt history were introduced in Blackboard Learn 9.1 Q2 2017.

blackboard group assignment submission

You and your administrators have a retrievable record in the system even if an attempt, assignment, or student is later deleted. These records are maintained in the course and also retrievable after the archive and restore process.

You can access all of your students' confirmation numbers from the Grade Center. Open the Reports menu and select Submission Receipts .

blackboard group assignment submission

On the Submission Receipts page, you can view information for each assignment, such as who submitted and when. Group assignments are also logged and the Submitter column lists who submitted for the group. In the Submission column, view if a student submitted a file or wrote the submission in the assignment's editor.

Use the menus at the top of the page to filter the items. In the second menu, select Not blank and leave the search box empty to show all of the submission receipts. Select a column heading to sort the items.

Edit, reorder, and delete assignments

You can edit, reorder, and delete your assignments. Change the order of assignments with the drag-and-drop function or the keyboard accessible reordering tool. For example, reorder the assignments to keep the current one at the top.

blackboard group assignment submission

From an assignment's menu, select on option:

  • Move an assignment to another location in your course. When you move an assignment, it's removed from its original location. You can't copy an assignment.
  • Edit an assignment. If you change the instructions, students who have already made submissions will see the new instructions only on subsequent attempts.
  • Apply release criteria, tracking, metadata, and review status.

More on options you can apply

Delete assignments

You can delete an assignment from a course area and if no student submissions exist, the Grade Center column is also deleted.

When you delete an assignment that has student submissions, you also delete all the submissions. You have two options:

  • Preserve the scores in the Grade Center, but delete the assignment and all submissions. Though the scores remain in the Grade Center, you can't access the students' submissions again. The action is irreversible.
  • Delete the assignment, the Grade Center column, all assigned grades, and all submissions. The action is irreversible.

Alternatively, make the gradable item unavailable in your course to preserve the submissions and the scores in the Grade Center.

Important Reminders

Students who aren't enrolled in the course at the time that a group assignment has been submitted will not have access to that activity or the submission.

If a student registers for the course after groups are set, you must manually add them to a group for access to the assignment details.

If you edit the assignment between creation and the due date, groups may lose any work already in progress.

If you delete a group from the assignment after students have started an attempt but before submission, they'll lose access to the assignment.

  • Submit a Non-Timed Assignment where you are allowed multiple attempts

If your tutor has enabled multiple attempts for an Assignment you'll see this information when you look at the Details & Information panel for the Assignment.

Submit your Assignment

1. Click the name of the Assignment . This will open the Details & Information panel - review the details of the Assignment. You'll be able to see the number of attempts you have (and how many you have left, after you submit).

2. Click View Instructions to begin.

5. A pop-up window asking you to confirm if you want to submit the Assignment will be displayed, select Submit .

If the due date has passed, and you still have some attempts left, your tutor may enable a setting allowing you to submit these attempts late. You will see a system message advising you that your next attempt will be marked late. Do not attempt another submission after the due date has passed without first understanding the penalty for late submission (speak to your tutor if you are unsure).

After submission, if you look in the Gradebook, you'll notice the status column for the Assignment will now say 'Submitted'. Under the name of the Assignment you'll also see '1 attempt submitted'. You may need to refresh your browser.

Attempting further submissions

Once you have made your first submission, you will be able to see the grading calculation that will be used to grade your Assignment - this can help you to decide if you want to make additional attempts:

1. Click the name of the Assignment to open the Details & Information panel.

2. Under the Attempts heading, click the link which tells you how many submissions you have submitted, e.g. 1 Submitted . This will open the Submission panel. Under the Final Grade heading you'll see the calculation your tutor intends to use, this could be one of the following:

  • Average of all attempts
  • First attempt with a grade
  • Attempt with highest grade
  • Last attempt with a grade
  • Attempt with lowest grade

3. If you want to attempt another submission, select View Instructions (and so on). You will then submit your Assignment in the same way as before.

You may see the option to 'View Submission' in the Details & Information panel (this appears when you have the Assignment open). Click View Submission(s) to see the answers/work you submitted for each of your attempts. Note: depending on the settings your tutor has used for the Assignment, you may not be able to view your submissions until after your work is graded.

Submit a Timed Assignment where you have 1 attempt

Your tutor may limit the amount of time you have to complete your Assignment (e.g. 60 minutes, once started). Time limit information appears alongside other Assignment details in the Module Content area. You'll also see the time limit when you open the Assignment - in the Details & Information panel, and within the Assignment, as you work.

Once you've started the Assignment, you'll find a timer at the top of the screen. This will let you know the remaining time in minutes and, during the last minute, the time you have left down to the last second.

Start and submit a timed Assignment

1. Select the name of the Assignment to open it. This will open the Details & Information panel - review the details of the Assignment.

blackboard group assignment submission

A pop-up window will display, notifying you that the timer will start. If you're not ready to start, select Cancel . If you are ready to start, select Start Timer .

blackboard group assignment submission

You are reminded that the timer will continue and will need to confirm if you want to Close Draft, or Cancel and return to the Assignment.

blackboard group assignment submission

When you are ready to resume working/submit, you'll be able to open the Assignment again by clicking Continue attempt.

blackboard group assignment submission

If you do not click Submit before the timer lapses then, depending on the settings your tutor has applied, you may see one of two messages when the timer gets to zero:

  • Your Assignment will auto-submit and you'll see a message advising you the Time is up and that your Assignment has been submitted.
  • You'll see a message advising you that Time is up and that you can continue working for an extra amount of time, though work submitted after the limit may receive partial credit. Click Submit Now if you want to avoid the penalties for extra time.

blackboard group assignment submission

You can't edit your work after you submit.

After submission, if you look in the Gradebook, you'll notice the status column for the Assignment will now say 'Submitted'. You may need to refresh your browser.

You may see the option to 'View Submission' in the Details & Information panel (this appears when you have the Assignment open). Click View Submission to see the answers/work you submitted. Note: depending on the settings your tutor has used for the Assignment, you may not be able to view your submission until after your work is graded.

  • Submit a Timed Assignment where you are allowed multiple attempts

Your tutor may limit the amount of time you have to complete your Assignment (e.g. 60 minutes, once started), along with giving you multiple attempts to submit. Time limit information appears alongside other Assignment details in the Module Content area. You'll also see the time limit when you open the Assignment - in the Details & Information panel, and within the Assignment, as you work.

Your tutor may also allow you to submit multiple times, you'll see the number of attempts you have in the Details & Information panel. The time limit for the Assessment applies to each attempt.

2. When you are ready to start, click the Start attempt 1  button. If you see ' View instructions' instead of 'Start attempt' the assignment isn't timed, refer to the non-timed submission guides above.

blackboard group assignment submission

A pop-up window will be displayed to notify you the timer will start. If you're not ready to start, select Cancel . If you are ready to start, select Start Timer .

You are reminded that the timer will continue and need to confirm if you want to Close Draft, or Cancel and return to the Assignment.

You will see a system message advising you that your next attempt will be marked late. Do not attempt another submission after the due date has passed without first understanding the penalty for late submission (speak to your tutor, if you are unsure).

You can't edit your work after you submit. In-progress attempts will be submitted automatically once the timer counts down to zero.

Once you have made your first submission, you will be able to see the grading calculation that will be used to grade your Assignment – this can help you to decide if you want to make additional attempts:

1. Click the  name of the Assignment  to open the Details & Information panel.

2. Under the Attempts heading, click the link which tells you how many submissions you have submitted, e.g.  1 Submitted . This will open the Submission panel. Under the Final Grade heading you’ll see the calculation your tutor intends to use, this could be one of the following:

3. If you want to attempt another submission, select  Start attempt 2  (and so on). You will then  submit your Assignment  in the same way as before.

You may see the option to 'View Submission' in the Details & Information panel (this appears when you have the Assignment open). Click View Submission to see the answers/work you submitted for each of your attempts. Note: depending on the settings your tutor has used for the Assignment, you may not be able to view your submissions until after your work is graded.

Submit a Group Assignment

Your tutor can create a Group Assignment where you will collaborate with other students and submit work that you all contribute to.

Your tutor may assign you to a Group or ask you to join a Group so that you can contribute to a Group Assignment.

Group Assignments where the tutor assigns members

In the Module Content area, if a Blackboard Assignment is a Group Assignment, you'll see your group name listed under the Assignment name. Group member names appear at the bottom of the Details & Information panel when you open an Assignment.

Group Assignments where you join a Group to participate.

In the Module Content area, if you see a ' Join a group to participate' link under the Assignment name , select the link to choose a Group.

blackboard group assignment submission

Clicking the link will open the Groups page, where you can join the Group of your choice.

Once you've selected a Group, the name of the Group you have chosen will appear under the Assignment name in the Module Content area and the Details & Information panel of the Assignment.

blackboard group assignment submission

The Assignment will then also be listed in your Gradebook for the module.

For further guidance on joining a Group, see Groups in Minerva.

Submitting a Group Assignment

Any of the group members can submit the Assignment on behalf the group.

  • You can view a Group Assignment without submitting it. When you select  View assessment , you can just view the Group Assignment or add some work.
  • If you are not ready to submit, select Save and Close . Your work on behalf of the group is saved and not submitted. Select View assessment  to resume working.
  • Everyone in the group can keep track of the latest version of the work. Until a member selects  Submit , you can open the Group Assignment as many times as you want.

For guidance on how to submit your Group Assignment, refer to the relevant guide above, keeping in mind that the Submit button can be clicked by anyone in the Group and that Group members should agree on who is going to submit the Assignment on behalf of the Group.

Group Tests cannot be timed, but can have a due date and time.

Additional guidance for Assignments

Additional guidance: viewing files that have been included in an assignment.

Your instructor may attach files that you need to read or use to complete an Assignment. Your tutor decides if you can:

  • view the file
  • download it
  • view and download it

If your tutor allows file downloads, you'll see a three dots icon to the right of the file name which will give you the option to download the file.

If you are only allowed to view the file, you'll only see a downward arrow. Click the arrow or file name to open the file and see it within the Assignment page.

For video and audio files, select the name of the file to open them. You have controls for play, pause, and volume control. For video files, you can view the video in full screen.

Images are shown directly within the Assignment page.

Want to decide where your downloads are saved? For most browsers, you can select where the files that you download are saved.

For example, in Chrome, navigate to Settings > Advanced > Downloads. You can select the location for file downloads and choose if you want the browser to ask each time. In Safari, you have the same capabilities. Navigate to Preferences > General > File download location.

Additional guidance: How to check your word count

If you are typing in the editor, the word count appears below the editor. After you save, the word count no longer appears.

blackboard group assignment submission

These items are included in the word count:

  • Individual words
  • Text in bulleted or numbered lists, but the bullets or numbers themselves aren't included
  • Superscript and subscript text not part of another word

These items and formatting elements don't affect the word count:

  • Images, videos, and file attachments
  • Math formulas
  • Blank spaces and lines
  • Alternative text

Additional guidance: Confirmation/receipt of submission

Once you have submitted your work, you should see a 'Your submission was successful' pop-up message. This will provide you with a confirmation number and the time and date of your submission. It will advise you that you'll receive an email confirmation shortly. Note: during busy times, it can take a few hours for you to receive an email.

Additional guidance: Late submissions

Your tutor may allow you to submit an Assignment late, (late submissions may be subject to penalties).

After the due date has passed and you open an Assignment, you’re alerted that your submission will be classed as late. You can view the alert in the Details & Information panel and in the Submit confirmation pop-up window. In the Details & Information panel, you can also see if any submissions are or will be late.

blackboard group assignment submission

If you are not allowed to submit late, the Details & Information panel will say, 'You can't submit after the due date'. This means that you must complete your Assignment before the due date and time, regardless of the number of attempts or time limit you have to submit your work. In-progress and saved attempts will auto-submit at the due date and you will receive a submission receipt via email.

If you need to submit late and are not able to, or are unsure of the penalties for submitting late, you must contact your tutor/school

Additional guidance: Can I re-submit my Assignment?

You cannot normally re-submit an assignment, but it depends on the settings your tutor has chosen.

If your tutor has enabled multiple attempts, you should be able to submit again (though the number of times you can do this will vary). See the guidance above on Submitting Assignments where you are allowed multiple attempts:

If you need to re-submit and are not able to, you must contact your tutor/school.

Additional guidance: Starting a timed Assignment that may cause you to finish after the due date

If your tutor has set up an Assignment so that you cannot submit work after the due date, and you start an attempt too close to the due date, you will see a message in the Details and Information panel that states your time limit has changed.

Once you start, a timer with the new limit appears at the top of your submission attempt (for example, an Assignment is due at 4pm and is 1 hour long, you start at 3:30pm. This means you will have a 30 minute time limit as that is all the time that remains).

blackboard group assignment submission

Additional guidance: Assignment is asking for an Access Code

Your tutor may require you to enter a a 6-digit access code before you can view the Assignment.

If your tutor wants to use the access code feature, they will share the code with you. After you type the code in, you can open the Assignment. You can use the code to resume an Assignment you have started and not yet submit.

You won't need the code to view your grades and feedback.

blackboard group assignment submission

If you are asked to enter an Access code and do not have one, please contact your tutor for help.

Submitting Assignments in Blackboard

Submitting your work with the Assignment tool in Blackboard allows you to easily upload your homework files to your instructor and receive files back, along with your grade. There is no need for paper or even email.

Assignments Overview (Student) Assignments are created by your instructor. They can be used for simply submitting homework. Assignments can also be used to participate in a back-and-forth review process of projects and papers. Learn more: https://en-us.help.blackboard.com/Learn/Student/Assignments/Submit_Assignments

I tried to turn in an assignment, but nothing happened when I clicked submit.

If you’ve attached files to submit as part of your assignment, know that those files do not begin uploading to the Blackboard database until you click the ‘Submit’ button. Depending on the size of the attached files and the current upload speed of your internet connection, it may take a little time to complete the upload, especially if you’re submitting videos or other large items by directly attaching the file.

In the event that you’ve attached files, clicked submit, and nothing happens immediately, you may need to simply wait a few minutes — do not click submit more than once.

In some cases, this issue is related to the file name of the attached file. Before submitting, ensure that the name of the attached file is not unusually long and that it doesn’t contain any special characters.

Can I submit to an assignment dropbox more than once?

If you don’t see any indication that you are allowed multiple submissions, it’s best to assume that you only have one opportunity to submit. Do not click the submit button on the assignment submission page until you’ve confirmed that you’ve completed all of the assignment requirements, attached the correct files, and are ready to submit.

Some instructors allow their students to submit more than once to an assignment dropbox, but you will need to check the assignment instructions to be sure. If you are allowed multiple submissions, you will see the ‘Start New’ button on the Submission History page that appears when you click on the assignment link in the course after your initial submission.

Assignments in Blackboard are accessible once they’ve been deployed by your instructor in a Content Area of the course. Your instructor may have an entire area in your course dedicated to all assignments, perhaps even linked on the Course menu, or assignments may be placed along with related lesson material within unit folders in the course.

Once you click on an assignment link you will be brought to the submission page, which is split into three sections:

  • Points and instructions:  Check the top of the assignment submission page for instructions and any supporting documentation for your assignment. If your assignment is graded, you will see the points possible for the assignment listed in this section as well.
  • Assignment submission:  You have the option to type your submission directly into the Blackboard assignment tool or attach files from your computer or a cloud service like Google Drive. Be sure to check the syllabus and assignment instructions to see if your instructor has provided guidelines for how to attach your work to the assignment tool.
  • Add comments:  You can provide text comments to your instructor about your assignment submission, but you should never use the comments section to submit your actual work unless instructed to.

Each time you successfully submit to an assignment in Blackboard, you’ll be taken to the submission history page, which will show you grade information, a timestamp of your submission, a link to any attached files, and a preview of those files if they were submitted in one of the approved formats. You can return to this page by accessing the assignment link where you submitted your work within the course content and/or by clicking on the title of the assignment in the My Grades tool.

The system also generates a receipt of your submission that is sent to your UA Little Rock email account and stored in the My Grades section of the course. You should confirm that you’ve received a receipt of your submission each time you turn in your work by checking your UA Little Rock email account and/or by navigating to the Submitted tab in the My Grades section of the course.

It’s important to verify that your assignment has been successfully submitted each time you turn in your work. If you are not taken to the submission history page after submitting your work and/or do not receive a receipt of your submission, you should contact the Blackboard Student Support help desk immediately. Do not wait until the assignment due date has passed or until grades are submitted for your course to report an issue with submitting an assignment.

Viewing assignment feedback

Assignments submitted in Blackboard are not scored automatically, but need to be reviewed by your instructor. After reviewing your work, you instructor can use the same Assignment tool to provide you with a grade, written feedback, and additional files. You then can review the information in two ways: through the Assignment itself and through the My Grades area.

To review the assignment results through the Assignment Itself:

  • Return to the Assignment for which you want to review the results.
  • Click on the Assignment link to open the Submission History .
  • At the bottom of your submission will be Instructor Feedback that will have a grade, any comments, and any attached files.

  • Click My Grades link in the Course Menu if it is available. Remember, your instructor can rename the title of this link. You will know you are on the right page because My Grades will be at the top.
  • Look for the Assignment for which you want to review the results.
  • Click on the name of the assignment to see instructor feedback, inline comments, or to obtain files that may have returned. Additionally, some comments will appear in the comments column to the right of the grade column.

SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention tool offered by Blackboard that helps educators detect unoriginal content in student papers. In addition to acting as a plagiarism deterrent, it also has features designed to aid you with learning about plagiarism and the importance of proper attribution of content from other sources and by other people.

Students submit their work to SafeAssign as part of the assignment submission process detailed above. Not all assignments in Blackboard use SafeAssign, but those that do will ask you to agree to submitting your paper to the Global Reference Database when you attach your work for submission.

Once submitted, SafeAssign checks the originality of your work by comparing the text to text on the Internet, within published articles, and to the work of other students at UA Little Rock. The amount of time it takes for SafeAssign to review your work depends upon the demand on the system and the length of your submission.

If your instructor allows it, you can view the SafeAssign originality report on the assignment submission page. You can find more information about accessing and interpreting the SafeAssign originality report on the Blackboard website.
