Table of Contents

Most Common GP Topics for Essay Paper 1

The most common topics are: 1. Historical, social, cultural, economic, political and philosophical topics 2. Science including its history, philosophy, general principles, current developments and applications 3. Mathematical and geographical topics 4. Literature and language 5. Arts and crafts 6. Topics of local interest and global concern, as stated from the GP Syllabus (Code: 8807)

Now, the above topics is by no means exhaustive. We can easily go into subtopics for each of the main 6 topics. For example: under the General Paper topic of Literature and language, we can go deeper into Mass Media, , Music, Media, Film, etc. Or, under the topic of local interest and global concern, we can zoom into Singapore only, Gender (Women), Environmental (Animals, Water & the Sea, Land Use, Pollution), etc.

So you get the point, and that preparing by topics alone isn’t going to help a lot.

General Paper Themes for Essay Exams

What’s better than preparing by topics? Answer: You can prepare by GP themes! That is, by group several topics into a theme, you can more easily craft a relevant, creative and balanced response.

Below are sample essay questions inspired by the essay questions in this year’s prelim papers, as they have been modified. As promised, they are organised them into themes for your easy perusal and reference. The following themes are grouped and selected based on their frequency in the A Level GP exams as well as they broad enough to cover a variety of questions.

The major themes to focus on are:

a. Arts, Language & Mass Media b. Economic & Political Issues c. Science & Technology & Medicine d. Moral Dilemmas & Personal Experiences (aka Values, Philosophy or Individuals) e. Social & Economic issues f. Crime & Punishment g. General.

In addition to grouping topics into themes for easier and effective preparation of your essay exam for GP, we can also prepare by question type. This involves your exam techniques and your experience of handling certain categories of exam questions. For example, the following list are common question types:

Type 1: Questions attempting to make a causal link between topics or themes

Some questions establish a relationship / / maybe even causality between two issues and hence you would need to identify that relationship and either agree with it or refute it. For such qu estions with 2 issues or subjects, the link between the two issues is the focus of the  essay. Do NOT have a separate discussion of the 2nd issue.

Examples: 1a: Technological advancements always bring about social equality. How far do you agree?  1b: he world would be a better place if everyone spoke the same language.’ Discuss. 1c: How prepared are we for climate change? Discuss this for your country. 1d: Medical science has been so successful that people now expect too much of it.’ Comment. 1e: Advertisements are often entertaining, but they rarely affect consumer choice.’ Do you agree? 1f: Should poorer countries develop their tourist industry when the basic needs of their own people are not being met? 1g: ‘Instead of speeding up the pace of life, we should be slowing it down.’ What do you think?

Type 2: Questions that target … ‘in your country’…

2.1: Is there value to historic sites in your society? 2.2: How prepared are we for climate change? Discuss this for your country. 2.3: ‘Freedom of expression is a luxury we cannot afford.’ How far is this true in your society? 2.4: Choose a sport and account for its popularity in your country: Golf 2.5: Choose a sport and account for its popularity in your country: Tennis 2.6. Which period in the history of your country appeals most to you? Give reasons for your choice. 2.7: Would you plan the layout of your neighbourhood differently?

Type 3: Questions that require … ‘in your opinion’…

3.1: What do you consider is a meaningful life? 3.2; What do you consider to be a rich life? 3.3: “Give me the country life, any time.” Comment. 3.4: Discuss the benefits of keeping a diary? 3.5: What factors would you consider when choosing a job? 3.6: If you were asked to set up an exhibition, what would you choose to exhibit and why? 3.7: It is better to live a short, exciting life rather than a long, uninteresting one. How far is this true?  3.8 “Leisure activities are a necessity, not a luxury.” Do you agree? 3.9 “The place for animals is in the wild, not in zoos or circuses.” Comment.

Type 4: Knowledge-based Questions

Such questions assume that students have an in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of the topic areas to be discussed in the essay. These KBQ tend to add in absolute words such as : never, solely, only, always, etc. Hence, commonplace knowledge will allow you, the GP student to pass, but obviously reflects nothing more than mediocrity. Knowledge must be showcased not just through a range of evidence but also through the differing conclusions one con draw from the some piece of evidence.

Examples: 4.1: Can the trade in weapons ever be justified? 4.2: Is sport too closely linked with money these days? 4.3: Discuss the view that too much faith is placed in statistics.

4.4: To what extent are small businesses preferable to large ones? Inevitably this question appealed to candidates who studied Economics. but it also proved to be a discriminator in identifying candidates who could make effective use of their General Paper skills and those who merely regurgitated theoretical arguments and unexplained Economics jargon, such as ‘economies of scale’ and ‘merit goods”.

Abbreviated forms, such as SBEs (Small Business Enterprises) and MNCs (Multinational Corporations) were not uncommon. These must be explained. Furthermore, very tortuous attempts were often made in the introduction to define small and large businesses.

4.5: Can small countries have a significant voice in world affairs Focus on the following: Switzerland, Vatican City, Luxemburg & Singapore

4.6: Is effective farming possible without science? Candidates drew upon the distinction between subsistence farming and that which was more of an industry, often tailored to meet modern demands of population and choice. Similarly, there was an awareness of organic farming, with its benefits and drawbacks. A good range of examples was incorporated to illustrate the impact of science on agriculture: the development of seeds, fertilisers, alternative means of producing crops and so on.

Sports Model Essay

. Commercialisation will be the death of sport. Discuss.

There is no absolute relationship between shampoo and a soccer player. Drinking beer has nothing to do with watching a soccer match. Yet, we always have the impression of men watching soccer with Carlsberg mugs in their hands and the image that soccer players use an expensive brand of shampoo to suit their status. The association of these products with sports is a result of commercialisation. Commercialisation, in this case, of sports started decades ago but it is only in the recent years that commercialisation of sports is becoming more evident, with new technology which are able to connect the world more effectively. It is hard for an athlete to resist a million dollar contract in exchange for just posing with a certain product for some shots. On top of that, sponsors are needed for major sporting events like the Olympics. With only 10 percent of an athlete’s pay coming from the profession while the remaining 90 percent coming from advertising and other non-sport related activities, it is almost always true that sport cannot survive without the sale of teams or the utilisation of sports to generate income. However, it is also true that such commercialisation of sports could kill it, making sports not a means to achieve physical and mental excellence in a certain game or event but as a way to attain fame and riches.

There is a trend that the breaking of world records in the Olympic games have slowed after the late 1980s, however, there is a need to generate attention so that people will be awed by the athletic performance of the participants, so that they would become idols and heroes of the masses and with the fame, clinch deals that are worth a hundred times a regular person can earn in their lifetime. Technology has answered the athlete’s call. In 2008, Michael Phelps won 8 medals with the help of the highly advanced swimsuit. In fact, 21 out of the 22 medals won were the result of the high-tech suit. Intelligent shoes which can help convert running postures and open vents when ventilation is needed help to utilise the athletes’ energy efficiently. With these in place, it is no surprise that there is a surge of records in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In another example, anabolic steroids were used to enhance the athlete’s performance, Cox returned her medal for her relay 6 years after the event. The need to win drives the athletes to look for alternative methods to enhance their performance. It is no longer a fight of the athletes’ genetic makeup which has been given to them since birth, it is not a fight of their mental and physical capacity but a fight of technology. This reliance on technology has caused sports to lose its original function, to attain the highest of human performance. Likewise, the greed, the temptation which drove them to depend on the technology has caused sports to fail as a result of commercialisation.

However, the riches that await the athletes could be an incentive for them to perform better and it may not be the athletes’ ultimate aim but as a mean of support for himself or herself and their families. 98 percent of the world class athletes receive no payment for their contributions and achievements at the Olympic Games as only the medallists receive prize money. The income for these professionals with passion for the sport may be only equivalent to that of a regular office worker unless he achieved fame or clinched some medals. In this realistic world, it may be insufficient for the passion to keep the athletes going as they have to feed themselves and to provide for their families. Hence, commercialisation, the trading of sport and its commodities could be a good way to retain these talents in the field and may not necessarily cause to death of sport.

Commercialisation also spreads and promotes certain sports to the world, showcasing the best of our species by letting them appear on shirts and talk shows. For example, many western sports are introduced into Asia with commercialisation. The products and merchandise of sporting teams which become increasingly popular helped to promote the sport and others who aspires to be like them may take on the sport, developing their innate potentials. Many famous athletes started off by being a fan of famous athletes and train to become like them. Ronaldo of the Brazil team for example, treated Pele, a retired player of the Brazilian soccer team as his idol and aspiration to become a great player. Hence, commercialisation could also work hand-in-hand with the industries such that it both provide revenue for them and promote sports.

However, the Olympic Games, that stands as the epitome of sports in the world, have been criticised for selling too much of its power to companies that wishes to advertise their products when the world is watching the Games. The Olympic Games is large scale and the host countries could lose millions of dollars just by hosting it. In order to reduce such losses, the Olympic organising committee may see the need to find corporate sponsors for the Games and these sponsors usually include private sectors. The Coca-Cola Company paid the Olympic organising committee 21 million dollars such that only its product, not those of competing soft drink brands, can be advertised. Events such as tennis matches were scheduled to maximise viewership and the advertising slots available before, during and after the match could cost more than 10 million dollars. Rules for certain games have also been modified to increase the duration and repetition of breaks and time-outs so that more commercials can be shown. Instead of optimising the periods such that the athletes could perform to the best of their abilities, these factors were ignored to make way for revenue. Therefore, commercialisation could be detrimental to sport as least consideration was taken over the athletes doing their best on the field than to make money.

In conclusion, even though many critics mentioned that commercialisation has caused sport to lose its function, to display the best of the athletes’ performance, sport still has to depend on the revenue generated by it to survive in this world. No matter how far the passion for the sport a sportsman could possess, he would require some recognition for his efforts and such recognition would be tangible gains generated by commercialisation as well as fame which he would receive. However, there is a need to control how much control is given to the private sector when it comes to games like the Olympics which stands at the top of all other forms of sports achievement, a symbol of the sporting world. If even this event has fallen into the hands of corporations as a tool for advertisement, there would be little hope for the future of sports.

Roger penske earns 100th sports car victory as no. 6 porsche wins imsa laguna seca.

  • Nate Ryan ,

The long-distance trip was worth it for Roger Penske, who flew overnight from Belgium to Monterey, California, to witness the 100th sports car victory of his illustrious career

Nick Tandy made an aggressive move to seize the lead in the No. 6 963 of Porsche Penske Motorsport, leading the final 10 laps of the IMSA Motul Course de Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

“For Team Penske, obviously, we’ve had a tough couple of weeks,” Penske told NBC Sports’ Dillon Welch. “But you know we’re a strong team. We’ve got great people, and I’m behind all of them. But to see that Porsche win today at Laguna Seca, one of my favorite tracks, is amazing.

“And the team effort today, I was in Belgium yesterday to see team effort there and certainly Will (Power finishing second) in Indy . We’re back on track here, and I’m thinking about going forward.”

Penske, 87, has been on a whirlwind worldwide tour to support his racing empire. After spending Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he was at the Spa racetrack Saturday to watch his World Endurance Championship entry finish second. Then he jetted more than 5,000 miles overnight to witness his second WeatherTech SportsCar Championship victory of the season.

It was an upbeat ending to a mostly down week for Penske, who suspended four team members from Indianapolis Motor Speedway for May after completing an internal investigation of the push-to-pass scandal in the IndyCar season opener.

IndyCar: Miller Lite Carb Day

To backfill some openings on the IndyCar side, Penske shifted an engineer from his sports car team to Josef Newgarden’s No. 2 Dallara-Chevrolet, but his IMSA organization didn’t miss a beat. As Tandy and Mathieu Jaminet took the victory, No. 7 teammates Felipe Nasr and Dane Cameron finished third to put both Penske 963 entries on the podium.

Nasr and Cameron also remained first in the points standings through four races.

“It’s a wonderful day for us,” Jonathan Diuguid, the managing director for Porsche Penske Motorsport, said in a release. “Nick and Mathieu delivered a formidable and flawless performance. It was an unforgettable weekend for our global team with a win and podium finish in Laguna Seca and second place in Spa-Francorchamps. I’m very proud to notch up the 100th victory for the Penske organization in sports car racing. We’re now very much looking forward to the next IMSA race in Detroit and the FIA WEC season highlight in Le Mans.”

It’s the fifth Grand Touring Prototype victory for Porsche Penske Motorsport since the team entered IMSA’s premier hybrid prototype category. That includes opening the season by winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the first victory in the crown jewel for Roger Penske in 55 years.

“It’s a deep bench,” Penske told Welch. “We’ve got a deep bench. People that care. People that know we can be winners, and we’ve showed it with this Porsche program over the last couple of years. And we’re focusing on (the 24 Hours of) Le Mans now.

The GT winners were the No. 77 Porche 911 GT3 R of AO Racing with Seb Priaulx and Laurin Heinrich in the GT Pro and the No. 57 Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Winward Racing with Philip Ellis and Russell Ward in GTD.
