Second Semester Calculus

( Warning:  Students cannot receive credit for more than one of Math 112 or Math 132 )

Description of the course

Concepts covered in this course include: methods of integration; applications of the integral to geometry, physics, and economics; slope fields and the qualitative behavior of solutions to differential equations; and Taylor series.

Successful completion of Math 112 is awarded 4 semester hours of credit. The lecture sections of the course meet 3 times a week for 50 minutes or twice a week for 80 minutes.  The fourth hour is a required lab session in which students work through a lab lesson with assistance from a graduate student teaching assistant (TA).  Students complete the related lab exercises outside of lab time and submit these to their TA for grading. These lab lessons and exercises are accessible using the Lab links below.  The lab content complements the lectures and examines themes that run throughout the course. The lab component accounts for 15% of the course grade.

  • Single Variable Calculus with Early Transcendentals (9th edition), by James Stewart, published by Cengage. It is a available in the bookstore. Do not purchase WebAssign unless it is required by your instructor. The course covers section 5.5, select sections in chapters 6, 8 and 9, and most of the material in chapters 7 and 11.

Calculators

  • Students are encouraged to have a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator for Math 111 and Math 112.  Calculators are used only to complete select labs and homework.
  • Students can expect to take most tests and quizzes and the final exam without a calculator.

Students will meet with a teaching assistant (TA) for the 4th hour of the course each week, beginning the first full week of classes.

Labs 0-10 are posted below.  Lab 0 is a Calculus I review that should be completed after the first lecture and submitted at the first lab session for grading.  The lab sessions do not convene until the first full week of classes.

What can QuickMath do?

QuickMath will automatically answer the most common problems in algebra, equations and calculus faced by high-school and college students.

  • The algebra section allows you to expand, factor or simplify virtually any expression you choose. It also has commands for splitting fractions into partial fractions, combining several fractions into one and cancelling common factors within a fraction.
  • The equations section lets you solve an equation or system of equations. You can usually find the exact answer or, if necessary, a numerical answer to almost any accuracy you require.
  • The inequalities section lets you solve an inequality or a system of inequalities for a single variable. You can also plot inequalities in two variables.
  • The calculus section will carry out differentiation as well as definite and indefinite integration.
  • The matrices section contains commands for the arithmetic manipulation of matrices.
  • The graphs section contains commands for plotting equations and inequalities.
  • The numbers section has a percentages command for explaining the most common types of percentage problems and a section for dealing with scientific notation.

BREAKING NEWS

TRAFFIC ALERT: All lanes of I-95 SB near World Golf Village closed because of 2 overturned work trucks, fuel leak

4 warnings in effect for brantley and columbia counties, morning show, help your child thrive: back-to-school homework strategies.

Ivanhoe Newswire

ORLANDO, Fla. – A study of the largest urban school districts in the U.S. found that students take an average of 112 standardized tests between Pre-K and 12th grade. While some students excel at test-taking, others can get stressed out.

A Washington Post study found high schoolers spend almost three hours a night studying, experts say the right environment is key.

“Students need to learn in a state that is optimal for learning,” said Demetrie Luke, tutor and founder of Inlighten Tutoring.

Be sure to study in a space without distractions. The more multi-tasking students do, the slower their brains process information.

Next, find ways to motivate them.

“It’s not just consumable things, money or this or that. Sometimes it’s just once again, attention from a loved one, right?” explained Luke.

Encourage them to take practice tests. One study found students who had brief retrieval practice tests before a high-stakes test remembered 60% of the material, while those who only studied remembered 40%.

A Texas A&M study found repeating information out loud moves content from short-term to long-term memory.

Also, avoid all-nighters! Cognitive performance is controlled by our body clocks, meaning our learning and memory are higher in the morning, not at night.

Start your morning with our daily forecast, trending news and stories curated by The Morning Show team.

Instead, get a good night’s sleep and study in the morning.

And don’t forget to celebrate the wins.

“The more wins that we can build into young people studying, the more likely they are to show up for studying, right? A win can simply be, either words of affirmation or even just acknowledgement,” said Luke.

Also, try having your student teach the study material to you. Explaining it to someone else will help them remember it better, and if they’re struggling to remember something, have them look it up right away. Research shows spending too long trying to recall material can train their brains to struggle when answering a particular question.

The final exam will take place on Monday May 13, 9:00-12:00, in Emerson 210. It will cover all of the material seen during the semester. Rudin allowed, no other materials allowed.

See here for more information about the content covered in the exam and additional practice problems from Rudin.

The midterm took place on Tuesday March 12, 12:00-1:15, in Science Center Hall E (usual place and time). It covered the material seen in lecture up to Tuesday March 5 (most of it included) -- specifically, Rudin pages 1-63, minus the appendix to Chapter 1 and the section on perfect sets on p.41-42.

Allowed: Rudin's book but NO OTHER MATERIALS (no notes, no calculators, no electronics). IMPORTANT: to take advantage of this policy, you need a physical copy of the book that isn't heavily annotated with extra text! (highlighting/underlining is fine). (or a printout / photocopy of chapters 1-3).

The midterm will not be about digging for arcane facts in Rudin -- it will only use concepts that you should be well familiar with from repeated exposure in lecture and in homework assignments. The book is allowed in order to reduce your stress level, but shouldn't be necessary. You won't need to quote specific theorem numbers from Rudin, as long as what you are using is a valid theorem we've seen in class.

Midterm score distribution: the median score was 90 out of 120, the lower quartile was 74, the upper quartile was 104. This means: 25% of the scores were below 74, 25% between 74 and 90, 25% between 90 and 104, 25% above 104. Scores are available on Canvas; you can get your midterm back in class on Thursday 3/28, or during office hours.

Note: the page numbers shown for each day's material are approximate. The actual contents covered in each lecture may end up being slightly ahead or slightly behind of schedule.

Trivia Meets Kaleidoscopic Chaos!

Quizzard might just be the hidden gem in the app store, assuming you like your learning served with a heaping spoonful of whimsy and a side of technicolor mayhem. The interface could be described as a unicorn's dream, painted in every hue of the rainbow and then some. It's so cheerfully bright, you'll forget whether you're here to learn or to play a round of digital laser tag. But it’s not all about looks; Quizzard delivers content with a zesty twist that keeps you on your toes. Trivia questions that make your brain do somersaults are the norm here. Ever wanted to decode the molecular structure of caffeine in under a minute or guess Shakespeare's favorite cheese? Quizzard makes such intellectual gymnastics delightful, and you’ll chuckle as much as you'll ponder. Plus, the ads, while frequent, are an adventure in themselves, offering you snippets of the outside world at the most unexpected moments. It’s like getting commercial breaks during your personal game show—annoying but part of the fun. So, strap in for a quiz experience that’s as entertaining as it is enlightening, where every question is a surprise party for your neurons!
GREAT LEARNING TOOL MADE BY A GENIUS DUDE!!! Quizard reads your question and like searches the web for similar information to come up with an answer. Quizard provides a paragraph explanation along with the short answer. READ THOROUGHLY bc it is a computer and sometimes the wording makes it come up with “the wrong (short) answer” even though throughout the (longer paragraph) explanation you can figure out the true answer that Quizard happened to word incorrectly or chose a similar but wrong multiple choice option for. If you’re not trying using it for just the short answer not bothering to read and check the answer and dont read the paragraph then ya.. some of your answers are gonna be wrong. But if it doesn’t give you the right answer it’ll at least provide some explanation to put you on the right path.

DO NOT GET THIS APP!

So, I’m in 4th grade, 4TH GRADE! & IT COULDN’T HELP ME CORRECTLY! So, you know in elementary school papers, & the printer will add these little pictures to the side, well, when i took a picture of this paper, quizard told me that “ I’m sorry, there’s a object in this paper, i cannot tell you the correct answer unless you cover it” ….. IM SORRY! IS A SMALL PICTURE DISTRACTING YOU!? & HOW IS PUTTING SOMETHING OVER IT GOING TO HELP!? Mm!? Well, i cover it, & it is so stupid! It can’t even proofread! It told me that the words that were “incorrect” (by the way, i fact checked it, & the words were correct) & it tells me that the correct answer for gymnasium is “gymnasuim” …i’m sorry, did you just make up a word? WHAT KIND OF AI ARE YOU!? So, i tell it that it’s incorrect, it’s actually “gymnasium” & it tells me, “ I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but can you explain the answer’s to me?” ….. WHY DO YOU THINK I GOT THIS APP!? I mean like, it’s not like I wanted YOU to explain it to me! So, yeah, I'm not going to sit there & waist my time trying to explain a ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PAPER TO AN AI! So, I definitely DON’T recommend this app. ( it’s not even worth 1 star )
