Love PowerPoint presentations and improv comedy? PowerPoint Karaoke might be the perfect team activity or icebreaker for you!

This article goes in-depth to teach you about PowerPoint Karaoke and how to play. We also have free PowerPoint Karaoke presentations you can try by yourself or with friends.

What is PowerPoint Karaoke?

PowerPoint Karaoke is an improvisational game where players take turns making a presentation based on slides they have never seen before. It is named after the presentation software, PowerPoint, and karaoke, where players sing along to pre-recorded backing tracks.

In PowerPoint Karaoke, players need to quickly adapt to a series of slides with nonsensical information or images in order to make the “best” presentation.

“Best” is obviously a subjective measure, so this can lead to funny and unpredictable presentations, and it is a great activity for team-building, theatresports, conferences, and other types of social gatherings.

What are the rules of PowerPoint Karaoke?

There are many different ways to play PowerPoint Karaoke, but they typically involve…

  • Two or more teams or players who need to make presentations on different topics
  • Two or more presentations (one per team) that the presenters have not seen before
  • Audience engagement to judge the performance of each team

Here are some variations of how you can play.

Rules for Classic PowerPoint Karaoke

The classic PowerPoint Karaoke setup involves multiple teams each selecting a presenter, slide decks that auto-advance, and a judging system to determine the winning presenters or team.

  • Players break into two (or more) teams
  • Each team nominates a presenter and chooses a presentation for the other team to present. The presentations should be about 10 slides long
  • Once the presentations are selected, the presentations begin
  • Each presenter starts, and every 20 seconds, their slideshow automatically advances
  • Once the presentations are over, the audience chooses the best presentation

Alternative Rules for PowerPoint Karaoke

  • Taboo PowerPoint Karaoke - This variation of PowerPoint Karaoke adopts the rules from the popular board game Taboo, and it adds a challenge where presenters are not allowed to use any of the words from a list of “Taboo” words.
  • PowerPoint Against Humanity - This variation of PowerPoint Karaoke is interactive and involves each player inserting slides into the presenters’ presentation to come up with a final presentation.
  • PowerPecha - This variation involves presenting an actual presentation on a certain topic in “ Pecha Kucha ” style. Preferably it involves matching up someone with an in-depth presentation that is completely unrelated to their area of expertise.

Free slide decks for PowerPoint Karaoke

The best presentations for PowerPoint Karaoke typically have the following attributes:

  • They start with a strong title slide to set the presenter down a certain path. Some of the best starting points are strong points of view on persuasive topics or incredibly detailed scientific findings
  • The slides are filled with unrelated images, graphs, and diagrams that will make the audience laugh. (Team photos, memes, inspirational posters, and inside jokes are all great slides for PowerPoint Karaoke)
  • Let the person know when they are on the last slide, so they can close their presentation
  • They are similarly predictable and unpredictable between players

Tips for PowerPoint Karaoke

  • Use your body - Gestures, movement, and acting things out is a great way to get laughs and get into your presentation
  • Just start talking - Say something, even if it’s gibberish. Don’t worry about the words you’re saying. Have fun, and just go with the vibes!
  • Decide on your style - Pick a style for your presentation and try to keep it up through your PowerPoint Karaoke slot
  • Relate to yourself and the audience - Find ways to bring the story, slides, and pictures back to yourself and your audience

A Guide to PowerPoint-Karaoke

08.15.19   •  #fun #ppt #game.

When hearing the Word Karaoke, most people immediately think of being on stage and singing to a background track. With PowerPoint, we associate work, school, meetings and workshops – rather professional matters. But mix the two things together and you get one of the funniest, most entertaining games ever – PowerPoint Karaoke.

What is PowerPoint Karaoke?

…may be the first question you ask. Well, PowerPoint-Karaoke (also known as Battle Decks) is a game with very simple rules: The presenter gets on stage and must convincingly present a deck of PowerPoint slides he has never seen before. The main purpose is to have as much fun as possible. We listed further instructions in the paragraph below.

Watch this very funny example of Kate McKinnon doing PowerPoint Karaoke:

  • The presenter must not see the slides before presenting them. All slides have to be presented in order and it is not allowed to skip slides.
  • When all the slides have been presented, the presentation is over. Alternatively, you can set a time limit.
  • The rules for the slides are not defined very strictly. They can either be about a “regular” topic (e.g. on a country, an animal, a hobby), a complex topic (e.g. difficult concepts of science), or about nothing at all really (just a bunch of nonsense-slides open for creative interpretation).

Once all the presenters are done with their presentation, it is time to crown a champion. You can decide the winner based on the following points:

  • Content and Credibility
  • Posture and Gesture
  • Entertainment/Fun
  • (Optional) Withdraw points for not finishing in time

An easy way to evaluate the best presentation is to let the audience vote in a live poll via SlideLizard. Download it here: slidelizard.com/download

How can I play it?

Even if there is no pub or bar near you that offers public PowerPoint-Karaoke events, you can always get your friends and family and have a fun evening playing. You can either make presentations for each other, try out the ones we made down below or look for more on the internet. You can show the slides on a TV or a bigger computer screen. The at-home-or-with-friends-version is definitely a great option, because you do not have to get on a stage and you’re with people you know all the time – which makes it a lot less embarrassing and may get shy people to participate.

Making it even more entertaining

The game gets even better by making it interactive and integrating the audience. Polls are perfect for doing so! SlideLizard offers a great tool for creating them. Here's an example:

What does every Start-up need?

  • A coala bear
  • 2437 litres of rum
  • A submarine

Now it's time to let the audience vote. In the end, the presenter has to explain the right answer.

In order to get you started right away, we have prepared three creative presentations for your next game of PowerPoint karaoke! Each slide deck contains two additional suggestions for live polls which you can add with SlideLizard to make the game even more fun!

How To Make Karaoke In PowerPoint

Karaoke is a fun activity that can now be easily created using PowerPoint.

From choosing the perfect song to customizing the slides and adding transitions, we will cover everything you need to know. We will share some tips and tricks to ensure a successful karaoke presentation.

Key Takeaways:

What you’ll need, a computer with powerpoint.

Having a computer with PowerPoint is a fundamental requirement for creating engaging presentations. A teacher from Oregon, US, Regina Griffin, can guide you effectively using this software.

In an educational setting, PowerPoint facilitates the seamless integration of educational content, helping teachers deliver information in a structured and engaging manner. Features like slide transitions, design templates, and online collaboration tools enable educators to create dynamic presentations that cater to diverse learning styles.

A Microphone

When incorporating audio elements into presentations, the role of a microphone cannot be overstated. It not only amplifies the speaker’s voice but also captures nuanced tones and inflections, enhancing the overall delivery. The clarity and volume provided by a quality microphone significantly contribute to audience engagement and comprehension.

In the context of education, as Regina Griffin highlighted, a well-balanced audio input can make complex concepts easier to grasp. It bridges the gap between the presenter and the listeners, fostering better communication and knowledge transfer.

A Karaoke Track

Step-by-step guide to making karaoke in powerpoint.

In this step-by-step guide, you will learn how to create a karaoke experience using PowerPoint, incorporating elements such as rubber forest imagery, small subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA references, and potentially drawing inspiration from the works of Johan Friedrich Camarer.

Choose a Song

Selecting the right song sets the tone for your karaoke presentation. Consider tunes featuring Nasalis larvatus themes, potentially sourced from Biodiversitas resources, to add a unique touch to your creation.

Create a New PowerPoint Presentation

As you start the process, think about the color schemes that mimic the lush greenery of Pahang’s rainforests or the vibrant hues of its sunsets.

Visualize how images of cascading waterfalls or misty mountaintops could captivate your audience. Utilize slide transitions and animations to emulate the flow of a gentle river or the graceful dance of leaves in the breeze.

Insert the Karaoke Track

Embedding the karaoke track into your presentation adds an interactive element to engage your audience. Consider incorporating rhythmic elements inspired by diabetic foot pathology or cultural references from Trengganu for a unique touch.

Incorporating interactive elements such as fun animations or audience participation segments can make the karaoke session more engaging. Encouraging the audience to sing along or provide live commentary can create a lively and dynamic atmosphere during the presentation.

Adding relevant cultural references from Trengganu or other unique locations can not only personalize the experience but also broaden the audience’s cultural awareness. This approach can foster a deeper connection with the material and make the presentation memorable for your audience.

Add Lyrics to Each Slide

Incorporating lyrics into each slide synchronizes the music and visuals for a cohesive karaoke experience. Consider themed lyrics related to primary minor amputations or artistic inspirations from AQUAREL for a memorable presentation.

Customize the Slides

Customizing your slides with relevant visuals and themes enhances the overall karaoke experience. Consider incorporating elements inspired by Mindfulness meditation practices or raising awareness about mental illness for a meaningful presentation.

Add Transitions and Animations

Incorporating transitions and animations between slides adds fluidity and engagement to your karaoke presentation. Consider integrating dynamic transitions inspired by the Holonic control system or animations reminiscent of a stereotactic frame for a polished showcase.

Practice and Edit Timing

Practicing and refining the timing of your karaoke presentation ensures a seamless and professional delivery. Consider the precision required, akin to the accuracy of a permanent pacemaker, and refine your artistry like an AQUAREL masterpiece.

Tips and Tricks for a Successful Karaoke Presentation

Enhance the quality of your karaoke presentation with these valuable tips and tricks. Utilize high-quality audio, and readable fonts, and perhaps inject a touch of creativity with themes inspired by the Proboscis monkey for a memorable experience.

Why not incorporate the unique characteristics of the Proboscis monkey into your presentation theme? Playful animations, jungle-themed backgrounds, or even incorporating monkey sounds can add a fun and memorable touch to your karaoke event.

Use High-Quality Audio

Choose a readable font.

Selecting a readable font ensures clarity and legibility in your karaoke presentation. Consider fonts recommended by Academia.edu or inspired by the works of Johan Friedrich Camarer to add a scholarly touch to your slides.

Keep the Slides Simple

When designing slides for your karaoke presentation, opt for clean layouts and avoid clutter. Implementing minimalist designs can help in conveying information effectively and grab the attention of your audience. Drawing inspiration from the graceful movements of Nasalis larvatus or the intricate patterns found in biodiversity elements from Biodiversitas can add a unique and captivating touch to your slides. Remember, the goal is to create a visually engaging experience that complements your performance and keeps your audience engaged throughout the presentation.

Encourage Audience Participation

The process of creating a karaoke presentation in PowerPoint can be a transformative and artistic endeavor, akin to crafting a masterpiece inspired by the intricate works of AQUAREL or the creative vision of Johan Friedrich Camarer.

Explore the references that have influenced the creation of this karaoke tutorial, looking into insights from sources related to the Holonic control system or the precision of a permanent pacemaker for a deeper understanding of the creative process.

The book ‘Holonic Control Systems: Modeling, Analysis, and Design’ by Venkatasubramanian et al. (2019) offers a comprehensive overview of the theoretical frameworks that underpin the Holonic control approach, shedding light on the principles applied in this tutorial.

  • Ensure accessibility by using a clear and easily readable font for the lyrics. This promotes audience participation as everyone can follow along.
  • Avoid overly complex slides. Keep a balance of randomness and cohesion to make your presentation both surprising and comprehensible.
  • Maintain clear indications of slide progression, including a clear marker for the final slide. This assists the presenter in keeping a smooth rhythm and flow during the performance.

Utilizing these customization tips can transform your presentation into an interactive karaoke experience , enhancing both the enjoyment and involvement of your audience. Investing time in creating custom PowerPoint slides with thoughtful design elements ensures a memorable and successful karaoke session.

Tips and Tricks for a Successful Karaoke Presentation

Conducting a PowerPoint karaoke can be a thrilling yet challenging endeavor. To ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience, here are some effective presentation tips to keep in mind. First and foremost, familiarize yourself with the content and flow of your slides. Knowing what comes next will help you maintain a consistent presentation style, reducing any potential anxiety. When delivering your karaoke performance, incorporate confident body language. Standing tall, making eye contact, and using gestures can enhance your stage presence and captivate your audience.

A critical aspect of karaoke performance skills is the ability to connect with your audience. Personalizing your content by incorporating anecdotes or interactive elements can make a significant difference. Additionally, keep your engaging PowerPoint slides visually appealing. Use high-quality images, legible fonts, and appropriate color schemes that complement the theme of the song. Avoid overcrowding slides with too much text or graphics, as simplicity can often be more effective.

Preventing disorientation during the presentation is crucial. Practice using transitions and animations beforehand to ensure they are smooth and don’t disrupt the flow. If you’re using AI tools for slide generation, make sure to double-check and tweak the final output for personalization and coherence. Lastly, embrace any technical challenges as learning opportunities. Troubleshooting unexpected issues calmly and confidently can leave a positive impression and demonstrate your adaptability as a presenter.

PowerPoint Karaoke, an engaging and entertaining activity, embodies this by challenging participants to deliver spontaneous presentations based on random, often humorous, slides they have never seen before. This guide explores why PowerPoint Karaoke is an excellent tool for enhancing public speaking, improvisation skills, and team-building, detailing preparation steps for both online and in-person formats.

Table of Contents

Why PowerPoint Karaoke is a Great Activity

PowerPoint Karaoke, also known as Battledecks, is not just about laughter and light-hearted fun. It serves as an innovative way to foster creativity, improve public speaking skills, enhance quick thinking, and promote team cohesion. Participants are put in a situation where they must weave a coherent and convincing presentation from unrelated slides, teaching them to handle unexpected situations with grace and humor. This makes PowerPoint Karaoke an excellent exercise for professionals seeking to sharpen their presentation skills, as well as a unique team-building activity that encourages openness and collaboration.

What to Prepare

For organizers:.

  • Slide Decks : Create or collect a series of unrelated, random, and amusing slides. Each deck should contain around 5-10 slides.
  • Technology : Ensure a stable setup. For in-person sessions, this includes a projector, microphone, and laptop. For online sessions, a reliable video conferencing platform (like MS Teams or Zoom) is required.
  • Environment : Foster a supportive atmosphere that encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones without fear of judgment.

For Participants:

  • Mindset : Come prepared to embrace uncertainty and have fun.
  • Basic Rules Understanding : Know the time limit for each presentation (typically 5-10 minutes) and the importance of improvising through the entire slide deck.

Differentiating Between Online and In-Person Presentations

Online (via ms teams or zoom):.

  • Technical Setup : Participants need a good internet connection and familiarity with the chosen platform’s functionalities, like screen sharing.
  • Engagement Strategies : Utilize platform features like chat or reactions to keep the audience engaged.
  • Practice Runs : Consider doing a technical rehearsal to ensure smooth transitions between presenters.

In-Person (Audience and Presenter in the Same Room):

  • Physical Setup : Ensure the visibility of slides for both the presenter and the audience. Test audio equipment to avoid last-minute glitches.
  • Audience Interaction : Take advantage of the physical presence to encourage more dynamic interactions, such as live feedback or applause.

PowerPoint Karaoke is more than just a game; it’s a transformative experience that sharpens a wide range of professional skills in a fun and supportive environment. Whether conducted online or in-person, it offers a unique opportunity to improve improvisation skills, public speaking, and team cohesion. As we navigate an ever-changing professional landscape, embracing such innovative and enjoyable learning methods can be a key to personal and professional growth .

PowerPoint Karaoke: Have Fun and Improve Your Presentation Skills

October 3, 2014 / Blog, PowerPoint ideas, PowerPoint Tips, Presentation Powerpoint, powerpoint karaoke, presentation delivery, presentation skills

I’m sure you’ve tried karaoke to wind down with colleagues after a long day of work. But have you ever thought to give PowerPoint Karaoke a try?

In PowerPoint Karaoke, participants are challenged to take the stage and deliver a presentation based on slides they’ve never seen before. The rules are pretty simple. Instead of singing power ballads, participants will need to make sense of random slides, and connect it to an assigned theme. They will also be restricted by a time limit. The results are usually pretty crazy and absurd. To give you a clue, here are some slides from a PowerPoint Karaoke event held in Seattle last 2012:

As you can probably imagine, PowerPoint Karaoke can lead to some pretty hilarious situations. The best speakers are those who are willing to step out of their comfort zone, ready to have fun while practicing their improvisation skills. It’s the perfect game for anyone looking to deliver better and more engaging presentations.

Getting started:

If you’re ready to throw your own PowerPoint Karaoke party, here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Build your PowerPoint decks beforehand. Be creative and go for slides that will challenge the participants. If you want, you can find presentations online and edit them for your use. Five to seven slides per deck will do.
  • At the event, let the participants draw for their speaking order and assigned theme. This will give everyone an even playing field, and prevent people settling for topics they’re familiar with.
  • You can decide whether you want speakers to control their own deck, or have the slides auto advance.
  • Set a time limit that’s no more than 5 minutes.
  • Decide on a winner by letting the audience vote. You can prepare forms, or just ask them to choose their favorites by show of hands.

PowerPoint Karaoke is a great activity to try with your colleagues. Gather a small group in a room and start having fun. Urge everyone to test their improvisation abilities and improve their presentation skills.

This is a brilliant activity for presentation or speaking skills trainings. I suggest to keep the amount of text on the slide low, so participants don't have to spend time understanding the slide. Also works really well with images only for story-telling.

10 tips for better presentations according to Karaoke

Nicolas Vogtenberger

Nicolas Vogtenberger

From Zentrale Intelligenz Agency to presentation skills

I have recently been told about the concept of “PowerPoint Karaoke”. I loved it from the moment I heard about the concept and decided that I would organize a “presentation skills” workshop based on it.

The exercise is simple, there are only 3 rules:

1) The presenter cannot see the slides before presenting, 2) The presenter is only allowed to use the next slide button and is never allowed to go back, 3) When all slides have been presented or after 6 minutes (whichever occurs first) the presentation ends.

PowerPoint Karaoke is strongly tied to improvisational theatre and derives from a game called “That Talk’s today ?!”. In this game a presenter leaves the room while the audience and an animator construct a few slides with graphs and acronyms. Afterward the presenter uses this never seen before slides to make a speech about a given subject. a Berlin base design agency called Zentrale Intelligenz Agency , improved the game in 2006 and created the PowerPoint Karaoke as we know it.

In fact, it is easy to set up a PowerPoint Karaoke — you only need a slide deck and a timer — but also very powerful: it is a playful and interactive activity everyone can get involved in and learn. Regarding presentation skills it allows participant to disinhibit themselves. Indeed, since they do not know the content of the slideshow they just have the title of the presentation to build a story. Therefore, each new slide is a new piece of inspiration they can use to keep talking. The presenter can move away from what is written on the screen and focus on the format of her or his speech. By creating a benevolent and unusual environment usually less confident people can reveal themselves in front of an audience without fearing the judgement of someone else.

How to set the PowerPoint Karaoke trap

Therefore, still in love with the idea, I recently organized a workshop with some colleagues. The plan was the following:

1) Organize a PowerPoint Karaoke (30 minutes), 2) Ask for positive feedback on the performances (10 minutes), 3) Create a slide of synthesis with the audience (5 minutes).

The session was really funny with fantastic stories being told by the performers, the feedback were very positives from the audience and from the performers (at the end of the exercise some members of the audience requested to perform). At the beginning the performers had a hard time using the full 6 minutes to speak but after 2 or 3 performance the situation improved, and we had amazing 6 minutes long presentations.

I decided to buy the slides to have homogeneous presentations but you can find some great examples here .

10 tips for better presentations according to PowerPoint Karaoke

After the funny part comes the working part! Together we built the following list of recommendation to improve our — your — presentations.

1) Story telling is the key: captivate the audience by using emotions and feelings in your speech 2) The main messages are said again and again : pedagogy relies on repetition 3) Each slide contains no more than 1 message : keep your audience focused on what you say 4) The presentation is structured by a unique guideline and the transition between slide is natural: create a logical progression to convince your audience 5) The slides are impactful : choose a catchy title and use the slide comments to remind you of 1) the message of the slide, 2) the objectives of the slide, 3) some context elements 6) Graphical elements are easier to memorize: use pictures make your point 7) Charts are double edged: they can be used to simplify technical questions but can also be hard to explain 8) Breath with the stomach and stand on the legs (feet aligned with the shoulders): you will reduce unwanted variation in your voice intensity or rhythm 9) Speaking in a foreign language makes it harder to focus on the vocal technique: in return breath and take your time to think then speak 10) It is important to appropriate the space : you can walk to make breaks during the speech and think about what you are going to say next (but don’t speak while walking!).

Now, I will try to replicate this workshop with more participant and a more time for the synthesis part. This will allow me to see how this format can scale and I hope we can dive deeper into the mechanics of what make a good presentation.

There is another format of exercise I want to try: PechaKucha . By keeping presentation fast-paced and concise it emphasizes more on the content and the way message are designed. Thus, it looks like a perfect complement for PowerPoint Karaoke.

I will give feedback as soon as I have some on these 2 points. Meanwhile, if you want to replicate the workshop do not hesitate to keep in touch so we can share best practices and advices!

How to Create a Karaoke Using Powerpoint (with Sample)

Powerpoint karaoke – your final project.

The most probable reason why you’re here is that your professor required you to create a Karaoke using PowerPoint. This is the usual final project when you are learning PowerPoint. I’m not sure if it’s the correct project but you need it so here’s how to do it!

I have to warn you though that creating karaoke using PowerPoint is a tedious process. You need the patience to succeed in creating a Karaoke PowerPoint that will boost your grade.

Steps in Creating a Karaoke Using PowerPoint

1. Choose and download a song from websites that offer instrumental versions. If your professor allows your music to have vocals, you can download an mp3 from other websites.

3. Click on Insert > Audio > Audio from File .

This will open a window where you choose your audio file or the music that you want. In order to ensure that your music will be played even when you transfer your karaoke powerpoint to another computer, put your mp3 and powerpoint file together in a single folder.

Add a picture in the background to suit your song. You can also use pictures of beautiful beaches and other places.

Don’t forget to change the Start Option of the effect into After Previous . Do this for all the words in the slide.

9. If the lyrics are out of sync with the music. Click on Animations > Animation Pane and adjust the position of the orange rectangles after each effect. Keep testing until you get the correct positions of the effects. Change the Advance Slide option of each slide into After and leave it as 00:00:00.

The video was created by saving the Powerpoint file directly into WMV. It contains some errors like the color of the lyrics.

Tip: Choose songs that are not too long like Twinkle Twinkle.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask me in the comments section below.

How to Make Interior Design Portfolio in Powerpoint : A comprehensive guide to creating stunning interior design portfolios using PowerPoint

Creating an impressive interior design portfolio in PowerPoint can be a game-changer for showcasing your skills and attracting potential clients. Whether you are just starting your design journey or looking to enhance an existing portfolio, PowerPoint offers a user-friendly platform to present your work beautifully. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to craft a standout portfolio.

1. **Select Your Best Work**: Start by curating a selection of your best projects. Aim for a diverse range of designs that demonstrate your versatility and individual style. Include different types of projects such as residential, commercial, and any unique concepts you’ve explored.

2. **Plan the Structure**: Before diving into PowerPoint, sketch out the structure of your portfolio. A typical portfolio includes an introduction, your design philosophy, a project showcase, and a conclusion. Consider how you want to narrate your design journey.

3. **Create a Captivating Cover Slide**: Your cover slide is the first impression. Use a striking image of your favorite design project as the background and include your name, title (Interior Designer), and contact information. Keep it simple yet elegant.

4. **Include an About Me Section**: Follow the cover slide with a brief introduction about yourself. Highlight your background, education, and what inspires your designs. A personal touch can resonate with potential clients.

5. **Showcase Your Projects**: For each project, dedicate a slide or two. Use high-quality images to showcase your work. Include before-and-after pictures, design sketches, and any special features of the project. Accompany the visuals with brief descriptions explaining your role and the design process.

6. **Use Consistent Fonts and Colors**: Consistency is key to a professional-looking portfolio. Choose a cohesive color scheme and font style that reflects your design aesthetic. Avoid using too many different fonts or colors that can distract from your work.

7. **Incorporate Visuals and Graphics**: Use infographics, charts, or mood boards to illustrate your design process. This not only enhances visual appeal but also conveys your thought process and design philosophy effectively.

8. **Add Testimonials**: If you have worked with clients before, including a few testimonials can add credibility to your portfolio. A brief quote from a satisfied client can go a long way in building trust.

9. **Conclude Strongly**: End your portfolio with a strong conclusion that summarizes your design philosophy and invites potential clients to connect with you. Include your contact information again for easy access.

10. **Practice Your Presentation**: If you plan to present your portfolio in a meeting, practice your delivery. Being confident and knowledgeable about your projects will leave a lasting impression.

With these steps, you can create a compelling interior design portfolio in PowerPoint that effectively showcases your talents and attracts new opportunities. Remember to keep it updated with your latest work, and don’t hesitate to innovate with new design ideas!

Be sure to utilize high-quality images and maintain a clean layout throughout your presentation. This attention to detail reflects your professionalism as a designer.

Q: How many projects should I include in my portfolio? A: Aim for 5 to 10 of your best projects to keep your portfolio concise and impactful.

Q: What file format should I save my PowerPoint portfolio in? A: Save it as a .pptx for presentations and consider exporting it as a PDF for easy sharing.

Q: How often should I update my portfolio? A: Update your portfolio regularly, ideally every six months, to reflect your latest work and skills.

The Ultimate Guide to Hosting a Powerpoint Karaoke Event

If you’re thinking about hosting a Powerpoint Karaoke game, you probably have questions. “Will everybody have a good time?” “How do I make sure it’s a hit?”

In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know to put on a successful Powerpoint Karaoke event. We’ve surveyed hundreds of people who have organized these events and collected their experiences… both what worked, and what didn’t. Let’s see what they learned and use their lessons to plan the perfect event.

Before the event

You’ll want to make sure you have reserved a space that has the equipment you need to play. For most Powerpoint Karaoke games, that includes:

  • A large display (like a screen and projector) for displaying the slides
  • A computer that runs presentation software (like Microsoft Powerpoint , or Keynote )
  • A microphone and amplifiers, if the room is large

It’s best to test out the technology before your event, to make sure the slides are loading and everything is displaying properly.

You’ll also want to estimate how many people will be attending, so you can prepare enough seating for the audience. Powerpoint Karaoke really shines when there’s a good-sized audience. Make sure everybody will be able to both see the slides and hear the speaker.

Schedule your game for a time when people will be relaxed and loosened up:

“We added Powerpoint Karaoke as a fun option during our conference lunch break. It was a hit.” Cheryl L., Social Media Tulsa
“Do it at night, after drinks. We did ours as part of Creative Mornings, which means IT’S THE MORNING. People are going to work right after. It’s not the right time for crazy and absurd. Crazy works better after work, or at night, or following a happy hour where everyone is midway through letting off steam after a long day. Mornings mean people are going to work afterwards, they’re charging up, not winding down.” Scott Berkun, scottberkun.com

Getting volunteers

You’ll need volunteers to present. If your group isn’t used to improv, you’ll want to find volunteers in advance. For this, you can create a sign-up sheet or have people submit an online form . You can also recruit people individually, though keep in mind that the best presenters might not be who you expect:

“What we found was that some of the most introverted looked forward to getting on the stage for PK.” Cheryl L., Social Media Tulsa

The total number of presenters can vary widely depending on your event; We’ve seen anywhere from three to ten presenters in a given round. You can always leave a presentation slot open, for anyone who wants to volunteer on the spot.

Preparing the slides

There was a common thread in the feedback we received. The slides you use matter :

“I recently hosted a Powerpoint Karaoke event at my improv club in high school. It was a huge hit. Here’s what worked and here’s what didn’t: What worked: Two [slides] following each other that were direct contradictions. What didn’t work (most of the time): slideshows thrown together with just a bunch of random photos with no thought put into it.” Noah P.
“This year, our guy who had been updating our slides lost his edge… next year (and yes, we will do it again), we’ll take more care in the slides and topics we prepare.” (excerpt from one response)

You have several options when organizing slides:

  • Buy pre-built decks
  • Search for decks online
  • Build your own decks

Buying decks costs money, but it can save you time and it reduces the risk of playing something untested.

For those building their own decks, there’s a lot you can do to make them shine. So much, that we spun off a separate guide with tips and advice for making your own Powerpoint Karaoke slides . It has everything we know about building good decks, so check it out if you want to do it yourself.

Also, it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. You can get pre-built decks online and then customize them with your own images. This is a great way to tailor the game to your audience.

During the game

Start by introducing the game and explaining the rules to the audience. Be enthusiastic! Your energy will be contagious and will set the tone for the rest of the game.

Presentations

When it’s time to present, give the speakers everything they need to succeed. Make sure they can easily see the slides, remember the topic, and control the presentation:

“Let speakers control the slides. If you kept the [time] limit, but let the speakers control when a slide advanced, they’d have slightly more power over delivery. That adjustment would dramatically improve their ability to make the slides work.” Scott Berkun, scottberkun.com
“Make sure you have the technology that the presenter can see the slide shown as well as the topic at the same time” Sherry S., The Ohio State University

Something as simple as writing the topic on a card the presenter can see, can go a long way.

Do your best to help the presenter know where they are in the presentation. Adding slide numbers, a “final-slide” indicator, or a one-minute time warning will help keep presenters oriented.

Powerpoint Karaoke works well as a competition. As such, there are several approaches to scoring the players and deciding on a winner. These include:

  • Audience applause: Have the audience applaud for each presenter once all presentations are done. The name that gets the loudest applause is declared the winner. This works best for large audiences.
  • A panel decision: This can be unanimous, majority vote, or based on a scoring rubric. This works for games of all sizes.
  • Audience vote: This works best if you have a system for collecting votes like index cards or an audience polling tool.
“I’ve created special scoring cards for each player to score the other player. People felt this made it more ‘professional.’” Stefan van der Vlies

You can also come up with a prize for the winner, like a trophy or small gift. Raising the stakes adds some excitement and incentives to participate.

Game Variations

There are many ways to adjust the game to meet your needs. Here are some ideas that others have tried:

Presenting with a partner:

“We had so much fun that they asked to do it again, and then again with a partner.” Jean H., Creative Business Innovations LLC
“When two people had to share the presentation it was very insightful to see that they each brought out different information and in different ways.” Keith H., IAM/Boeing

Presenting remotely:

“The event I ran was probably somewhat unusual in that it was being done with a distributed team, over a Google Meet call. I was running the slides via screen sharing, and the presenter would see those slides at the same time as everyone else.” Jon W., Neos

(for more on remote play, see our guide for playing remotely )

Timed presentations, tag teams and more:

“We have multiple ways… Costumes and building the costume the presenter chooses into the slides that they get. Timed presentations, where a timer is set to random lengths that no one knows and the slide changes when the bell dings. You have to move fast and make the presentation flow under pressure. Tag team the presentation! At any point the presenter can tag in a team member to pick up the rest of the presentation. This is especially funny when a leader pulls in a team member that was clearly not paying attention!” Coni T., Code Science
