Speech on Career Guidance

Choosing the right career path can feel like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right tools and guidance, it’s a journey full of exciting possibilities. Your interests, skills, and dreams can shape a fulfilling future.

Career guidance is like a compass, helping you navigate the world of work. It’s about making informed decisions, understanding your options, and finding the best fit for you. Let’s explore this together.

1-minute Speech on Career Guidance

Ladies and Gentlemen, we’re here today to talk about something that will shape our future – Career Guidance. It’s like a roadmap that helps us navigate the big, wide world of work. Think of it like a GPS for your life!

Firstly, let’s talk about why career guidance is important. Choosing a career is a big decision, right? It’s not like picking what to eat for lunch. This decision will affect your whole life. That’s why it’s important to get some guidance. It helps you understand your strengths, your interests, and the jobs that match them.

Next, let’s think about how career guidance works. It’s not just about picking a job. It’s about finding out who you are and what you love. This might mean taking some tests, talking to professionals, or even doing some work experience. It’s about exploring the world of work and finding your place in it.

But career guidance doesn’t stop once you’ve picked a career. It’s a lifelong journey. As you grow and change, so might your career interests. Career guidance helps you adapt and evolve. It’s not a one-time thing, but a continuous process.

In conclusion, career guidance is not just a tool but a trusted friend. It helps you make informed decisions, find your passion, and navigate the ever-changing world of work. So let’s embrace career guidance and let it guide us towards a fulfilling and successful future. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Career Guidance

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let’s talk about career guidance, a topic that is important to everyone, whether you’re a student, a teacher, or a parent. Career guidance is like a map that helps you find the right path in your journey of life. It’s a tool that helps you understand yourself, your skills, your dreams, and how you can make those dreams come true.

Think about when you’re planning a trip. You need to know where you’re going, the best way to get there, and what you’ll need for the journey. Career guidance is just like that. It helps you decide what job or career you might want to have in the future, what you need to do to get there, and what skills you need to develop.

Career guidance starts with self-exploration. You need to understand your interests, your strengths, and your passions. If you love animals, maybe you could be a vet or a wildlife photographer. If you love numbers, maybe you could be an accountant or a mathematician. Knowing what you love and are good at is the first step in choosing the right career.

Next, career guidance helps you understand the world of work. There are so many jobs out there, some that you might not even know about! Career guidance can introduce you to different industries, different roles, and different paths. It’s like a big book of opportunities, showing you all the amazing things you could do in the future.

Once you know what you want to do, career guidance helps you plan how to get there. It’s like your personal GPS, guiding you step by step. It can tell you what subjects you need to study, what qualifications you need to earn, and even what experience might be useful. It’s your roadmap to success.

Finally, career guidance doesn’t stop once you’ve started your journey. It’s a lifelong process. As you grow, learn, and experience new things, your dreams might change. And that’s okay! Career guidance is there to help you navigate those changes, to help you find new paths, and to help you keep moving forward.

In conclusion, career guidance is not just about finding a job. It’s about finding your passion, your purpose, and your path in life. It’s about making your dreams come true. So, embrace career guidance, explore your interests, understand the world of work, plan your journey, and remember, it’s okay to change your mind. After all, life is a journey, not a destination. Thank you.

Speech on Career Choice (Short & Long Speech) For Students

Speech on career choice, introduction.

Respected Principal Sir/Madam, teachers and dear fellow students. Before this beautiful day I have been given a lucky chance to address you all. In my full effort and power I intend to say a few words regarding my topic- “Career Choice”.

We grow up fast, just a few years and we are at adulthood looking to empower ourselves and the world around us. Although our growth might not be that fast from biological view but for world in a subtle kind of way we grow up fast. We study in schools and in colleges, we graduate and go for the next step, that is job seeking. In short you can say with ending of our formal education begins a new search. Search for a proper and favorable career.

There are many students and their needs and expectation are different, and so is their choice of career. Some go for defense sector, some opt for private sector and some go for business and finding a suitable career isn’t a small task. It is definitely not that easy to assess ourselves from so many angles, through the perspective of so many available career options and job.

The most difficult part of this endeavor is being sure about anything in particular. Sometimes we decide something but life takes us to different paths and we stumble on things more suitable for us. We fall in love with something sometimes and that may be out of conventional career choice but it is good for us as far as our satisfaction is concerned. But above all we must not forget that each and every career choice and field of trade is a golden opportunity, a chance to make a difference in this world, to change the way things are, their very roots and form. In a way our career choices reveal a lot about our own nature. Our qualities are tested in every way. Students are forged in the fire of their passions and responsibilities as a leader and they make way for the generations to move on with their moral duty. For such important decisions to be taken by student alone isn’t a very wise thing to do I think, and I suggest we take counsel from our parents, teachers, and career counselor. Schools must provide career counselors for students to seek appropriate advice regarding choosing careers based on their preference.

Career counseling can provide children with proper assessment of their abilities and talents. We might not be able to know properly what are our strength and weakness but teachers can prove to be a great guiding hand. Careers are many and many, students chase them for wrong reasons, like social acceptance, money, etc. Chasing these things is not a bad thing because ultimately these are the only important things most people are interested in nowadays but chasing them in a shortcut path, without any skill development is a wrong approach. This approach will be disastrous and students will not benefit from it.

In the end I want to say that life is more than mere our trade and careers, life is full and colors, wishes, love and ambition. We should always strive to be better than yesterday. And believe me we can change our situations and life for better if we try more. Thanks for being such a patient crowd.

Love it it’s really helping

20 Career Speech: Tell Them Who You Are and Why You Matter to Them

Man carrying briefcase

A very excited college senior came to me and said, “Dr. Meade, I have the opportunity of a lifetime, will you please help me?” She went on to tell me she was a finalist for a very prestigious internship with a major magazine in New York. They were flying her out at the end of the month where she and three other finalists would each make a 3-5 minute presentation. The prompt was, “Tell us about yourself.”  Her dream internship hung on the outcome of her three-minute speech. That was a lot of pressure. There wasn’t a lot of information out there on how to succeed at such as speech, so I pulled resources from career centers, from persuasion theory, and from models of good speech practice and created a template for her. It worked– she got the internship! Since that time, more students have come with similar speech tasks, and each time we have applied this template with great success.

There are many ways employers determine which person is the right candidate for a particular position. You are likely familiar with the cover letters, resumes, and interviews, however, the concept of giving a speech as part of an interview may be new to you.

Let me share a few examples of what this speech “looks like.”

Example from a Student

E-MAIL FROM A STUDENT:

I learned a ton last semester and I have my first chance to put your teachings to work in a real-world situation. I recently interviewed with a company (XXX Oil Services) and what do you know I got called back for another interview! They are flying me out to Houston, and they will hold interviews over two days. Part of the requirements for the interview process is that I give a 5-7 minute speech. Here is a little sample of the e-mail they have sent me, and I have attached a short PowerPoint© guideline they have sent as well:

Student Presentations As part of the interview process, you are required to do a 5 – 7 minute presentation about your life accomplishments. Please review the attached PowerPoint for details and bring your presentation on a flash drive to your interview. Please prepare a presentation (5-7 minutes) in which you
Summarize the accomplishments of your life so far,
Explain what your goals are and
Demonstrate that you are the ideal candidate for XXX  Services

Example from a Human Resource Manager Regarding an Oral Resume

We give candidates 30 minutes to prepare for the exercise, but we have already informed the candidates that they should put together an oral resume presentation ahead of time.  That is to say, a few weeks prior to the assessment center I meet with the candidates and tell them that they will have this exercise.  They should put together a presentation of about 8 minutes in length that presents their qualifications for the job.  I typically emphasize that a simple listing of every course they’ve ever taken or every certification they hold is not very effective.  Instead, they should focus on how both their educational and experiential backgrounds have contributed to who they are, how they perform in their current position, and how they will perform in their promoted position. During the 30 minute preparation period, candidates are given the instructions that tell them they will have 8 minutes for their initial presentation on their resume (this time varies depending on the overall length of the exercise and maybe as long as 15 minutes), and the remaining 12 minutes (or longer depending on the overall length of the exercise) will be devoted to answering the interview questions which are presented to them on the next page.  Typically, for a 12-minute answer period, we would provide them 4 interview questions. We inform them both during the candidate orientations and the instructions that the assessors will be asking follow-up questions.  I believe this is an essential aspect of a good oral resume and a good assessment center.  I encourage follow-up questions from the assessors.  So often it is not the initial response that is revealing but rather the candidate’s rationale behind the decision that is so important in evaluating the candidate.

Example from a Career Services Specialist

I interviewed Renee Clay Director for Career Services and Students Programs, Walton Career Services and she said companies are asking students to give speeches at follow-up interviews. She said she has even encountered situations where they ask applicants to give a ten-minute speech on a topic of their choice.

What does this look like in the “Real World”?

  • Companies are using career speech by asking applicants to give a speech with the prompt: Why are you a good fit for this company?
  • Religious groups (Mostly, Christian Churches) are using career speeches by asking the applicants to give a speech with the prompt: What is your ministry philosophy?
  • Educational groups are asking future teaches to give a career speech with the prompt: Show us a lesson plan and talk us through the pedagogy.
  • Not for Profits are using this career speech by asking applicants to give a speech with a prompt: Tell us how your ideals align with our mission statement.
  • Internships are using career speeches by asking applicants to give a career speech with prompts such as the following: What do you hope to get out of this internship?

This Speech Is Important

This may be one of the most important speeches you have to give.  Most of you will spend four to six years in college and this is the speech that can make all that studying finally pay off.  Resist the temptation to under prepare for this speech. Don’t put it off and don’t let the fear of failure or fear of success stop you from giving the best speech possible. You should put more work into this speech than the papers and tests you did in college.  “Procrastination is the fear of success,” according to motivational speaker Denis Waitley. “People procrastinate because they are afraid of the success that they know will result if they move ahead now. Because success is heavy, carries a responsibility with it, it is much easier to procrastinate and live on the ‘someday I’ll’ philosophy.”

Let’s get started on building the speech.

Step One: Learn Everything You Can About the Company.

All good speeches begin with knowing your audience. Start with the job posting and write down the specific things they are looking for. What are the specific skills, what values are represented, what can you learn about the company from what they say about themselves in the job posting?  Go to the company’s mission and values statement and add it to your research. If it is a larger company, look at the individual division and research its mission and purpose. If you are a college student, check with your career services office and see what information they know about the company. Many career service groups keep databases on major companies and what they look for in candidates, who they know are alums, and many even have lists of the most frequently asked items in their interviews.

If possible, find out who will be listening to your speech. Lauren Rivera, Associate Professor of Management and Organization conducted 120 interviews of hiring professionals and found interviewers are looking for people who are similar to themselves. She suggests there are three reasons for this:  (1)  interviewers believe the person will be the best fit, (2) interviewers look for people who define merit the same way that they do because it validates their own self-image, and (3) interviewers get excited about candidates that share their same passions. The more you know about those doing the interview, the more you can make connections.

You have three goals at this point:

  • Research the company so you can make direct references to it in your speech.
  • Familiarize yourself with the core competencies they are looking for so that you can match them to your skillset.
  • Learn enough about the company and interviewees so you can find similarities.

Man taking notes

Step Two: Brainstorm What You Have to Offer

They liked your resume, they interviewed you, and now they are inviting you back to see if you are a good fit for the company. At this point, it does not benefit you to stand and reread your resume to them.  You are qualified or they would not ask you back for another interview.  They want to know you will pull your weight in the company, but they also want to know if you are someone they would want to spend time with at the office and after work. Now, they are trying to decide if they LIKE. Y ou should pass the  Airport, Holiday Party, and Convention Tests.

  • Would the interviewer want to be stranded in an airport in a snowstorm with you?
  • Would the interviewer want to introduce their family to you at the holiday party?
  • Would they want to have dinner with you at the three-day business convention?

Your goal is to be MEMORABLE, LIKABLE, and to DEMONSTRATE you have characteristics they NEED. In order to do that, you need to take a good, hard look at what you have to offer and I’m not talking about your previous jobs or even your GPA.

1. Take Personality, Leadership, and Career Assessment Tests

I suggest taking a version of the Myers-Briggs, Jung Typology. http://www.humanmetrics.com/personality.  *  Use the results to highlight some strengths you might not have thought of in your brainstorming. Once you get your results, cut and paste them into a document and highlight everything that applies to you that might be of value to the employer. For example, when I look up my type it says that I am creative and I like to come up with original solutions. Yes, that fits.

Let’s work with that for now. If I am trying to think of attributes that stand out about me, my creativity and ingenuity might be something that I want to highlight. I would check that attribute against what the company looks for and if it were something that the position would require, then I might decide to develop that. I will write that on my list of possible things to focus on–CREATIVITY and INGENUITY.

Take a variety of tests that you have access to.  Consider taking a leadership test and a personality test. If you are a college student, your career center likely has paid for those tests so you can take them.  If you have access to Strengths Quest© ,  Enneagram©, or the Myers-Briggs© Test, take them.  Use whatever test you can access to complete a worksheet of your strengths.

2. Ask Your Friends, Family, and Coworkers

Find those who know you and ask them a series of questions. Resist the temptation to disagree or defend when they share, just listen, and write the responses.

What could I bring to ___ company? Why would someone hire someone like me? What would set me apart from other candidates? What do you think is my strongest attribute?

3. Figure Out What Gets You Up in the Morning

A career advisor for the Walton College of Business asks students, “What gets you up in the morning?” and “What is your why?”  Think about what really drives you and make it part of the story you tell.

Step Three: Match Your Strengths to What the Company Needs

Now comes the deep thinking. Look at some of the words that came out from your personality tests and from the words that your friends used to describe you.  Look at what special qualities you have to offer. How can you match those with what the company is looking for? How do they relate to the core competencies that the company needs?   Try to find three strengths about you that will be valuable to the company.

Most speech prompts (and interview questions) can be answered with “these are my three strengths.”

Question: Tell me about yourself.

Answer: These are the strengths that set me apart.

Question: Why should I give you the job over someone else?

Question: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Answer: These are the strengths that set me apart and where they will take me.

Question: Why do you think you are a good fit for the company?

Answer: These are the strengths that make me a good fit.

Question: What is your leadership style?

Answer: These are the strengths that make me this type of leader.

Most of the time, you can develop your career speech by highlighting your three main strengths. It is worth mentioning that when colleges poll employers and ask them what they are looking for, they list problem-solving skills and the ability to work as a team at the top of the list. If these would be considered valuable where you are interviewing, you should talk about those.

Figure 1: Attributes Employers Seek on a Candidate’s Resume

Step Four: Develop Your Strengths into a Narrative

Let’s face it. Most of the time, the answers people give whether in an interview or speech are boring, they lack substance, and they sound like a form letter. “I am a people person who demonstrates good customer service. I believe in hard work and ….bla, bla, bla.” Meaningless words bounce off the ears. Nothing memorable.

If you want to be remembered, tell a story. First, start with your attribute. I had a student who said he was hard-working. He was worried because he didn’t have any “real” work experience they might not think of him as hard-working. Once we brainstormed, he realized that he spent every summer on his grandpa’s cattle farm. He was out mending fences before the sun rose and many days he would work until dark. He said, “Cows don’t care what day of the week it is.”  He told a story about how his grandfather taught him to work hard and how it was a family legacy to take pride in the work that was done–hard work was a badge of honor. By the time he was done with his story, I would have hired him for just about anything. By storytelling, he convinced me that he would give it his all. He didn’t tell me he was a hard worker, he proved he was a hard worker. His story was detailed enough that we could see him in our mind’s eye. He told a story we could remember. The added benefit of storytelling is that stories make us feel something. When your story is done, the audience doesn’t just know something about you, they feel something about you.

Anytime you apply for a position, think about the people tasked with listening to interviews all day long.  Get into their heads. The fact they need to hire someone means work is not getting done. Maybe, they are having to do extra work until you are hired. Maybe this is a new position, and they are hoping to make changes in the company once they get someone hired. The fact they are hiring often means they have a lot going on and they are eager to get it going, but they also may be feeling cautious because they need to find the right person.  In addition, to meeting with you, they have to do their own job, answer their own emails, deal with customers or coworkers, and figure out what to make for dinner. They may even have to coach the soccer team or volunteer at the food bank.  You get it– they are busy. They are busy, they may be stressed so do them a favor and make it easy for them to listen. Be interesting. Do not waste their time.

Imagine when you are writing this speech, that in addition to listening to you, they must listen to at least three other speeches. Imagine after hearing all these speeches that they are going to do their job, go home and do their home time, listen to the news on the way to work, and then come back 24 hours later to make their decision. After time and all those distractions, will they remember you and your strengths? If you only said, “I’m hardworking,” then probably not. If you told a story proving you are hardworking, they will remember your story; they will remember you, and they might even tell someone about this incredible presentation they heard.

When building this story, it can be one big story that hits on the three strengths that you want them to remember, or it can be three stories–one for each strength. I once had a student who took the three main ideas from the company’s mission statement and told one story of how she exemplified each of those. It was very direct and very audience-centered, and she used that speech to start a new career with her dream company right out of college.

If you are successful, any person listening should be able to repeat your main strengths and repeat your story.  Most importantly, they should feel you are competent and motivated.

Step Five: Start Writing and Write it Bird by Bird

It is hard to write about yourself and you are going to have to summons the courage to do it well. Writer Anne Lamont writes about this struggle.

Every writer you know writes really terrible first drafts, but they keep their butt in the chair. That’s the secret of life. That’s probably the main difference between you and them. They just do it. They do it by prearrangement with themselves. They do it as a debt of honor. They tell stories that come through them one day at a time, little by little. When my older brother was in fourth grade, he had a term paper on birds due the next day, and he hadn’t started. So my dad sat down with him with an Audubon book, paper, pencils, and brads — for those of you who have gotten a little less young and remember brads — and he said to my brother, “Just take it bird by bird, buddy. Just read about pelicans and then write about pelicans in your own voice. And then find out about chickadees, and tell us about them in your own voice. And then geese.” So, the two most important things about writing are bird by bird and really god-awful first drafts. If you don’t know where to start, remember that every single thing that happened to you is yours, and you get to tell it.

You too should write your really terrible first draft and you should tell a story in your own voice. With all your research in front of you, you should start writing bird by bird, story by story.

Professional standing in front of a whiteboard

Step Six: Begin Strong

The very first sentence of your speech should be powerful. You should pluck that sentence out and you should test it on a trusted mentor. Each word in that sentence should be intentional. Soon after that strong first sentence should be your name. You want them to link the strength of those words with your name. You should memorize your opening so you can deliver it with strength.

I didn’t choose teaching, teaching chose me.  When I came home from kindergarten, I set up school in the back yard and taught the neighborhood kids their ABC’s. I guess you could say, I’ve always been a teacher. Good morning, my name is Frankie Lane, and I want to tell you why I am a good fit for the teaching position. As a teacher, I am enthusiastic, innovative, and encouraging and I would like to demonstrate those attributes to you today.  The regional manager flew into Northwest Arkansas to meet with me. He flew in so he could ask me face to face how my sales strategy resulted in 12% increase in computer sales. He brought with him a team that was ready to listen.  My name is Bob Smith, and I would like to share with you what three things I shared with them that day.  If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams.  I believe this quote summarize my leadership philosophy that I want to share with you today. Good morning my name is Frankie Lane, and I would like to tell you how this quote defines my leadership style and why I am a good fit for Amazing Example Company.

Not only should that first sentence be written to have an impact, but it should also be delivered well. Memorize your opening. Know it so well that you could recite it easily. Practice it in the car, practice it in the shower, practice it while talking to your pet.  Resist the temptation to start with “ok so” or “um.” You have been working up to this speech all your adult life, you spent hours studying for tests, writing papers, and completing assignments so you could get to this moment. You owe it to yourself to put in the work and to make this speech work for you.

Step Seven: Refer to the Company Throughout

Remember,  this is not really a speech about you, it is a speech about them and what they need.  Because of this, it is important to talk about the company throughout your speech. “As I was researching your company, I came across a headline that said you were developing one of the largest interactive art displays in the area. As a consumer of outdoor art, I…” or “Your organization’s commitment to the environment is inspiring. I became active in environmental issues as part of a collegewide initiative…” A career services specialist suggests, “Don’t tell me who you are, tell me why you matter to me.”

A common mistake is when speakers act as if they are informing the audience instead of talking to an audience that is familiar. Let me explain. I had a student say, Walmart’s mission statement is “to save people money so they can live better.” This sounds like the speaker is informing the audience of something they should already know. Instead, they should say “as you already know…” or “we can agree on a key component of the mission statement.”

Step Eight: Practice Your Speech

You have researched the company and decided on how to present yourself.  Make yourself brief notecards outlining your presentation and begin practicing. You need to practice your speech enough that you could say most of it without notes. Memorize the opening and the closing because those can be the most difficult parts and tend to be the places where the audience is most likely to build impressions of you. If you are required to use presentation slides, be sure to practice with your slides, and perfect the timing. ( For more help on slides refer to the chapter: Making Presentation Slides)

In addition to practicing by yourself, you should practice your speech in front of a trusted professional and ask them for honest and detailed feedback. You should also record your speech and watch it as if you were the hiring team. Oftentimes when I practice, I will draw a smiley face on a piece of paper and put a name under it President of the company, and then another with a smiley face and a name, future co-worker. It reminds me that I’m not delivering to a wall but to people. When you practice, tape your smiley audience around the room and speak to them directly, “The director of development will be happy to know that I have successfully…”

For more: Refer to the Chapter on Delivery Advice: Do Not Imagine the Audience Naked! Managing Eye Contact, Movement, and Gestures

Step Nine: End Strong

The very last sentence is where you “seal the deal.” Most of the time, this sentence will not come easily. I once read a book where the writer talked about sitting on the floor rocking back and forth wondering why she even bothered and why nothing good was coming to mind. Maybe writing the closing, is not quite that hard for you, but it will be for the rest of us. We will feel self-doubt and inadequacy and will even question why we are bothering in the first place.  If that happens to you, walk away and do something you love, and remember your “Why.” Why are you pushing yourself? Remember how hard you worked to get here. Remember what gets you up in the morning. After you walked off the self-doubt, come back and write that perfect ending. Look at the last three words and make sure they are words with power.

Example from a Career Speech

SPEECH OPENING

A job isn’t just a job. It’s who you are. I’m Kelsey Gomez, and today, I’m not going to tell you why I think I’m best suited for this job—I know I am. Instead, I’m here to prove to you that this isn’t just a job to me, it’s a position that I feel best brings out what I was born to do in life. Company’s Name is working to make America a better place to be a child and raise a family.  To do this, a person needs to have passion, strong communication skills, enthusiasm to learn and gain experience, and the flexibility to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment—and here’s how I possess all of these qualities.

She told 3 stories to prove her attributes

SPEECH CLOSING

My whole life, I never dreamed of success—I worked for it.  I did this by helping others, educating myself, and handling everything that came my way with poise and determination. A job isn’t just a job, it’s who you are. And, who I am is a passionate, flexible, and driven person who yearns to make a difference in people’s lives.  The best way to predict the future is to create it.  And I believe, if you hire me, Company’s Name and I can create something worthwhile.

Step Ten: Present the Total Package

Your speech begins the moment they see you. Your “speech” begins whether you are speaking or not. I once worked for a firm that would have candidates wait in a waiting room before the interview. The administrative assistant would offer them water while they waited. Little did the job candidates know that the assistant was taking notes on their behavior in the waiting room. Were they polite when offered a drink? Were they poised while in the waiting room? Were they prepared? Another strategy I have witnessed firsthand is a business that had applicants write something, if they had to borrow a pen, they clearly weren’t prepared. I’ve even heard of interviewers who watched the applicant pull up to see if the person’s car is clean. It does little good to say you pay attention to details and drive up in a dirty car.

Potential employers begin sizing you up immediately. Are you dressed properly? Are your shoes clean?  Are you sitting attentively? Are you preoccupied with your phone in the waiting room? Are you walking with confidence? Are you picking your nails? Are you listening respectfully? Everything they see you do or say is part of the interview.

In nonverbal communication terms, trappings are those artifacts that enact stereotypes–a stethoscope around the neck means the person is a doctor or nurse, a briefcase means the person is a business professional.  It will benefit you to consider trappings and what yours say about you.  Think about the difference between a sports watch and a fancy watch and the message it sends. Depending on the job, one may be preferred. For example, I had a student who researched the group she was interviewing with and realized that high fashion handbags seemed to be important. She borrowed a friends’ name-brand bag and then was delighted when someone in the group commented about it in the interview meeting. She wrote me a message afterward that said, “They hired me over other candidates who had higher GPA’s and more experience and I think it is because I researched them so well that I knew what they were looking for. I really think my bag helped close the deal.”

It is worth noting that many career specialists suggest not carrying a bag–in this situation it was an intentional decision based on her research.

Dress the part. Research the standard dress for the organization. Be cautious, however, because they may wear athleisure wear to work each day, but they expect job candidates to wear a suit for interviews. As a college student, you have a big advantage because you likely have a career center that keeps records of the clothing suggestions for interviewing and many will even have places that will loan you professional clothing items for interviews.  Pay close attention to your shoes–they are very important. If at all possible, buy new shoes.  Yes, it may be an expensive item, but so was your education. Time and time again human resources directors and career specialists tell me that the way that people know whether you pay attention to important details is to look at their shoes.

Handshake Matters

In American business, you should shake hands with the interviewer and key members of the group. Several things go into a good handshake. First is the condition of your hand.  You should have neatly manicured nails and clean hands. If you are prone to have sweaty hands, it is a good idea to keep a napkin in your pocket to wipe the sweat off your hand before you shake.

Next, have a firm but not overly aggressive grip. When you reach for someone’s hand, you should open your hand wide enough that the web of skin between your pointer finger and thumb is aiming for the web of their hand. Hands should be so neither person’s hand is on top. Pump your hand two to three times.  When you shake hands, look them in the eye and try to say the person’s name and something nice. “Mr. Jackson, I am so glad to have the opportunity to talk with you today. ”

When you shake hands with someone that it gives them a positive feeling (if it is an appropriate handshake). When you attach that handshake with their name, you activate even more positive feelings. Research even suggests that other people in the room who see you give a nice handshake will get positive feelings about you. Before an interview, it is a good idea to practice your handshake with friends.

Finally, handshakes vary by culture, so if you are interviewing in a different culture, you should research greeting traditions.

Career speeches are always about you being the best version of yourself. I never have more self-doubt than when I’m doing a job search. I usually have to remind myself that I am smart enough and good enough to apply for this job.

I want you to know, you are good enough. You have worked hard to get here, you are ready.  I give you permission to be powerful and confident–it’s time to shine.

How to Write a Perfect Elevator Speech

“What’s an elevator pitch, and how can it help your career? An elevator pitch —also known as an elevator speech—is a quick synopsis of your background and experience. The reason it’s called an elevator pitch is that it should be short enough to present during a brief elevator ride.

This speech is all about you: who you are, what you do, and what you want to do (if you’re job hunting).

Your elevator pitch is a way to share your expertise and credentials quickly and effectively with people who don’t know you.

Done right, this short speech helps you introduce yourself to career and business connections in a compelling way. It can help you  build your network , land a job, or connect with new colleagues on your first day of work.”

Inspiring Career Guidance Messages for Students

In the journey of career exploration and guidance, it’s crucial to provide students with inspirational messages that foster a sense of motivation, determination, and resilience. The path towards a successful career is paved with both triumphs and setbacks, and it’s through the unwavering perseverance to succeed that one can truly carve out their own path. As Steve Jobs once said, "Find out what you like doing best, and get someone to pay you for doing it." This quote epitomizes the essence of career fulfillment – the alignment between passion and profession. Furthermore, it’s vital to instill within students the belief that opportunity isn’t something that simply knocks on their door; rather, it’s a door that they’ve the power to build themselves. As the great entrepreneur, Milton Berle once stated, "If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." Taking action and seizing opportunities are crucial components of shaping a future that’s defined by growth and accomplishment. Ultimately, the future of one's career depends on the actions they take today. As Mahatma Gandhi beautifully said, "The future depends on what you do today." It’s through the deliberate choices and efforts made in the present that one can shape a future that’s brimming with limitless possibilities. Additionally, it’s important to recognize that opportunities may not always present themselves naturally; rather, they’re created through initiative, drive, and a sense of resourcefulness. As entrepreneur Chris Grosser succinctly put it, "Opportunities don't happen, you create them." By fostering a mindset that embraces innovation and proactivity, students can unlock their full potential and become the architects of their own success.

What Is Career Guidance?

In an age where career queries are not uncommon, it’s important to answer queries related to career guidance or career, in general.

Who can benefit from Career Guidance?

Student Of Class 9th - 10th

Setting the basics right solves a lot of confusions that might arise later. Whether it is choosing the correct stream to the correct board, and mapping career goals, a right start at the right time makes all the difference.

Student Of Class 11th - 12th

One chooses one’s stream out of the four possible options (non-medical, medical, humanities, commerce), however the career options possible for a student to opt for are more than hundreds. To make sure that the entire process from choosing the right career options to achieving those goals goes smoothly, it is important that one seek career guidance from an informed (and experienced) mentor (read: career guide)

College Going Students/ Working Professionals

For people who have already made a career decision need to work towards it, to attain the maximum results. A guide informs them of the best career opportunities and ways to do the best in the field they have chosen for themselves. Generally, people end up taking the wrong paths in order to achieve their goals. Either they realize that the career option they have chosen isn’t meant for them, or it dawns upon them that the option they have chosen isn’t strong enough to keep them motivated or excited throughout their professional lives. As a result, they tend to rely on an expert’s advice, and that is where a guide steps in.

Do I Need Career Guidance?

One must definitely go for career guidance if one’s thoughts align with any of the ones mentioned below:

Choosing The Right Career

For people who find it difficult to realize the right career meant for them; a career guide helps them sort this confusion. There are infinite career options available to choose from, and without an expert’s proper guidance, one might stick to a few that his/her friends or relatives ask him to pursue. An informed career guide makes one aware about the scope of every career option in detail, which widens the horizon for the student. For people who think they are clear on their career paths and have attained enough clarity to work towards a chosen career option, career guides ensure that they achieve their goals without any distractions.

Realization Of Making A Wrong Career Decision

Making the right career decision at the right time makes a lot of difference. For instance, one might realize that engineering is not the best-fit career option for them, after having worked as an engineer for ten years, or one might realize the same quite early in life. Either way, the person has the option of realizing where his/her true passion lies and working towards the same, or continuing working on the current one. Since changing streams and discovering something completely afresh requires a lot of planning and discussions on the scope of the new career option, it is always advisable to take guidance on choosing the right career, right from the beginning.

Focused Career Route

A risk-averse student generally keeps a few career options available for him/herself. While it is not a bad route to follow, many students fall prey to career confusion. Their focus gets shifted, and as a result, they find themselves not performing up to their potential. A career guide not only helps a student decide the career route, h/she also guides the student about the path, maps his/her career, helps him/her clear the confusion and distractions coming along the way.

What Are The Elements of Career Guidance?

In order to understand Career Guidance a little better, let us look at its most important elements:

A Qualified Career Counsellor

The first and foremost element of any career guidance process is the presence of a qualified guide (read: counsellor).

An Agreement Of Trust And Confidence

The Process of Modern-Age Career Guidance

1. Online Assessment To Remove Human Error Or Biasedness:

An advanced and trusted online assessment doesn’t let one choose just between the few tried-and-tested career options. Psychometric assessments developed by researchers and psychologists ensure that career queries and problems are dealt with sincerity and backed by experience, knowledge and research. They are modern, and reveal the best-fit career matches on multiple parameters, such as interest, personality, emotional quotient, aptitude and orientation style. With such research and algorithms backed by the expertise of leading psychologists, the chances of falling into the wrong career decision trap minimalize.

Find all that you need to know about career assessments here .

2. Career Counselling And Extended Support From Experts:

A career discovery report may not be enough to help decide what one’s true career calling is. One needs proper advice for career selection, and by proper advice - we mean an expert’s advice. Parents, teachers and friends might be knowledgeable and want the best, but it takes a little more to know what the heart wants, what the brain says and what the career demands. An expert career counsellor and guide would be right beside the student, guiding him/her for the right career and helping him/her work towards it.

Find all that you need to know about career counselling here .

Career guidance is a two-step process and a great guide would always recommend students to follow both the steps in order to decide on the right career option meant for them. One spends almost 70% of one’s lifetime working. The proper career guidance, ensures that the career chosen is the right one and thus results in emotional, social and financial happiness.

How to Write Self-Introduction Speech for Professionals

Author Avatar

Introducing oneself is crucial for anyone who is actively searching for a job. If you go to job fairs, career expos, or have been invited for an interview it is to be expected that they would ask you to introduce yourself. May you be talking to a potential employer or someone who knows hiring, you have to deliver your self-introduction speech. Meanwhile, if you’re not looking for a job but open for better opportunities it is still good to have a ready one since you might just bump into a person who can help you take your career to the next level. A number of occasions in your professional life will require you to introduce yourself, that’s why having this speech pre-prepared helps you to be ready in those instances when you need to provide a snapshot of who you are and what you do. This enables you to be confident in those introductory meeting and a good way to break the ice in interviews and social situations you might find yourself in.

Self Introduction Speech is a short pre-prepared speech that provides a quick summary of your background and experience. It is a concise version of your response to ‘Tell me about yourself’. Despite that it is always delivered verbally, it still has to be planned and written carefully. If you are in a stage wherein you are currently crafting your speech or need some updating on your current one, you may use the guidelines below to draft a speech that you can use in a variety of situations.

Guidelines in Crafting your Elevator Speech

  • If you already have a personal branding statement, you may use it as a reference to draft your self-introduction speech. All you have to do is to extend and tweak it according to occasion and audience.
  • If you don’t have a personal branding statement yet, then start by writing down everything you would want someone you’re meeting to know about you.
  • Once you have the details that you need, filter it. Identify what should be included and what should not. Think of what would you prioritize to say for a first interaction. Omit any redundancies.
  • Remember to prepare two versions of your speech. One is using your first language, while the other is using English. Since English is a business language and sounds more formal, some recruiters would prefer to converse with you using this language. Moreover, in cases when you have to speak with a foreigner, you can introduce yourself easily knowing that they would understand you because you used a common language. If you are having difficulty in writing the English version of your self-introduction speech you may seek the help of English tutors .
  • After determining the details that you want to include in your speech, put it all together. Use the content guide below.  What you do – start by presenting a short, descriptive explanation of what you do in an interesting way.

          a. What industry – Tell them the industry that you are still or used to be affiliated with.

          b. Why you do it – You may mention the results that you enjoy achieving for others when you do what you do.

          c. What makes you different – Talk about your uncommon strategy that makes you different from others or best in what you do.

          d. What do you want – Express what’s your objective.

I’m a content writer for travel websites. I provide quality content to help readers know the best destinations to visit, the best accommodations to stay in, the best restaurant to dine in and the best activities to do in certain places. My passion is to provide reliable and useful information to readers that will make them consider my clients’ website as a credible authoritative resource and help boost their SEO efforts. Now I’m looking to branch out and do consulting work so I can apply this expertise to many more companies and improve the understanding of the advantage of providing quality travel content.

  • After drafting your speech, read it aloud and time how long it takes. The length can actually vary, but ideally, it should be less than one minute. The point is, when you deliver it, you can talk comfortably without rushing to say all the details that you wanted to share. Keep it concise to avoid monopolizing the conversation. Also by talking too long, you risk losing the person’s interest as attention spans nowadays are shrinking. Make it strategically short to ensure that you can get your message across any time and anywhere.

On occasions when you need to have a really short version of your self-introduction speech, you may use this formula as a guide.

I do [what you do] for [target market] so that [value].

This is best used for brief encounters. It tells concisely ‘what you do’. If you have more time to speak, then you can add more details about yourself. Remember not to limit yourself when writing your speech as you can structure it in many different ways

I write 10x articles for travel websites to help them become a credible authoritative resource among their target readers and boost their SEO efforts.

          a. For anything that doesn’t absolutely need to be there, cut it out. Your speech should be snappy and compelling. You don’t need to get too specific and overly targeted since your speech will be used in many circumstances, and with many different types of people. Delete the sentences that are too long or unclear. Erase and edit any repeating any words.

          b. Remember to add transitions to connect the concepts and make it flow smoothly and conversationally

          c. Tailor it depending on the situation and audience. Tweak the details slightly to provide information that matches your audience’s knowledge. Use words that are easy-to-understand and a language that’s common to most people’s vocabulary. Avoid jargon or too technical words. While these can demonstrate your industry knowledge they may also be off-putting for those who find these words unfamiliar. Keep it simple and focused, after all, you want your speech to be easily understood by your audience.

B efore using your self introductory speech, make sure to test it out. Remember that how you say it is just as important as what you say. Make it sound natural as if something you would say in a normal conversation. Avoid sounding like too formulaic or reciting something you carefully wrote. To determine how you sounded, you may record your voice while delivering your speech and objectively assess it. If you are really having difficulty in making it sound conversational then you may seek coaching advice from tutors or enroll for conversational courses.

Career guidance operates within a tradition of concern for the welfare of the individual and a respect for the dignity of each person. It eschews a haphazard or serendipitous approach to career choice for one that is more coherent and structured. The aim is to maximise the vocational potential of each person for themselves and the world-at-large. Over time, career guidance has evolved not only as a field of professional activity but also as a major area of academic research that focuses upon one’s vocational adaptation to life. This second edition of the International Handbook of Career Guidance is addressed principally to researchers in that discipline and reflects not only developments in career theories or guidance practices but also methodological approaches. This chapter sets out some broad influences on career guidance in terms of individuals, the society at large, occupation, and changes occurring in the world. The aim of this Handbook is to provide an up-to-date overview of the field of career guidance on the world stage. The argument is advanced that the fundamental intention of career guidance is to ensure that the individual maximizes lifelong career satisfaction. With this as a founding tenet, it considers prominent contemporary issues that confront career guidance services and practitioners, including the presence of the informal labour markets and changing formal workplaces, accelerating digital transformation and automation of processes, and the need to accommodate the work-based experiences of people on the margins. It is argued that there is scope for professional guidance in this changing, complex, and competitive labour market.

Career Guidance for Students – The Ultimate Manual

career guidance introduction speech

Share to Inspire:

We spend countless hours learning the theories of our academic curriculum and give our hundred per cent to achieve good grades. It is somehow made to believe that good marks are everything (though it is important.), but it is just a part and not everything that makes the career.

The world is quite complex, and career excellence does not depend only on academic mastery; you have to be good at problem-solving, soft skills, and communication. Also, at the end of the day, what matters is your liking and happiness.

Thus, the right guidance for a career is of utmost importance.

Hence, intending to help students and young professionals, we have compiled some important tips and guide points in this post to choose the right career path (part I). Also, we have added some actionable tips on improving soft skills for young professionals (part II).

Table of Contents:

Part 1: Choosing a career path

  • Talk with people who are in your aspiring position
  • Look for Internships
  • Self-introspection for career guidance
  • Career change

Part 2: Improving soft skills

  • Written and oral communication
  • Presentation skills
  • Time management and productivity
  • Emotional Intelligence

Part 1: Choosing a career path

Two people standing with confusion to choose the right path for career.

If you do a simple search online or go through a dictionary, you will know that career is the activity for which you get trained and do most of the day to earn money. A career is a very integral part of any person. If you are spending most of your time on it, then it’s a no-brainer that you must be interested or feel happy about it. Yet, the reality is quite different.

As per a survey of 857 people , one in every five people think that they chose the wrong career path. Here are the most common reasons for choosing the wrong road of career:

  • Choosing the career track that someone else chose and found success
  • Peer and parental pressure
  • Followed a certain track due to ongoing mass trends and lucrative job offers associated
  • Lack of career coaching and guidance while studying

Also, many times people don’t know how to act in real working conditions. They spend most of their study years acquiring knowledge about the subject but forget to learn the skill set required to work in an organization. So, here are some guidance points to choose your career path.

1.1 Talk with people who are in your aspiring position

Most of the time, we focus on the perks that someone is enjoying. We intend to follow the same path, which is one of the disastrous mistakes to commit. Don’t rush things; the task here is to ponder not perks but the work that people do to get those perks.

If you want to navigate your career in the same direction that a person chose, have a conversation with them. Try to ask questions about the function that they do in the organization. Ask questions as follows:

  • What is your daily routine in the office?
  • How do your position and work stand in the value chain?
  • What are some challenges that you face?
  • What skills other than academic knowledge are required for this position?

Ask open-ended questions. Once you get the inputs, try to align them with your fields of interest and capabilities. This simple conversation will clear a lot of doubts and false perspectives that you have. This also helps in knowing the work of liking and extra-curricular stuff that you need to do.

But what if you don’t know someone…

There are many students, who don’t have anyone in their acquaintance to have this conversation in their career. Under such conditions, utilize the following tips to find suitable sources:

a. Alumni network:

It’s a very underrated channel to get the right guidance for your career development. Alumni are those who can give advice that is quite relevant to your background and academics. They have already gone through your stage and know mistakes to avoid or things to do once passed out of college.

If you are fresher or in your final years, try to connect with your alumni. Ask them about the real scenarios of the industry and job functions. Try to open up and tell them about your interests and strengths. Alumni can recommend your job roles and companies that can leverage your true potential and interest.

Remember, a person always has a soft corner for the school or college they attended. They feel good talking with someone from the same alma mater. Thus, they will help you with the best intentions.

b. Connect on Linkedin

LinkedIn is a true hub of professional and career growth. On LinkedIn, you will find people working in almost every sector and job function. Also, LinkedIn gives you the ability to connect with people based on their job role, company, and location.

Try connecting with people in your aspiring position and field. Don’t be hesitant or think that people will not help. Linkedin is a professional platform, and people are very kind to solve professional doubts and have conversations.

After connecting, have conversations on career growth, guidance, and doubts via direct messages. It’s a very effective approach if done right with an intention to learn.

c. Interact on other social platforms:

Apart from popular social channels like Linkedin, there are platforms like Reddit or Quora. Reddit has subreddits that have tons of information and the facility to ask questions about careers. Especially follow subreddits like r/careerguidance to ask questions or read threads that clear your queries. It’s a community of 400k+ people.

As a fresher, these career tips , if followed rightly, can help you a lot in shaping your decision. One thing to remember, it’s common not to know the right career path. So, don’t be afraid to seek help or advice from experienced people.

1.2 Look for internships

One thing that is overlooked by many students and young professionals is ‘internships’. Many do it for curriculum requirements, but it is very important for your career development. Internships are like giving the sense of water depth (real-world job environment) without actually getting wet.

Here are certain advantages of doing an internship.

  • Gives you the first-hand experience of working in an organization.
  • Helps you understand the current trends and demands of your sector.
  • Know practical approaches to solving problems.
  • Hands-on experience with tools, products, and software.
  • Soft skills and communication skills.
  • Know the reality of job roles, and one of your interests.
  • Enriches your resume with practical experience.
  • They are the foundation to success in the first job.

There are paid and unpaid internships; but if you are freshers , your intentions should be to learn as much as possible. Don’t hesitate to have long working hours. Hard work is the foundation of success.

Both good and bad experience is a part of learning that can help you decide your future course. Internships also help in knowing positions that align with your strengths and liking. It’s like a self career guidance.

Here are certain tips to find an internship with maximum learning.

a) Try to connect with alumni, as they can help you in getting one.

b) Look for startups over multi-national companies; as the learning curve in new companies is very steep.

c) Utilise social platforms like Linkedin. Post status with your need, many people will share this post with the right people.

d) Check career sections of your favourite companies from time to time. Also, send a mail to HR for future references.

e) Utilise the power of the internet, but with caution. There are many online job portals, but read everything carefully and verify companies’ requirements. Don’t share personal information anywhere. Also, avoid responding to emails that are not custom.

An internship is a wonderful opportunity for testing your abilities, and skills and knowing your field of interest. If your college doesn’t help with internship search, look for yourself; but don’t miss them.

1.3 Self-introspection for career guidance

After going through previous steps like talking with alumni, people on desired positions, or doing internships. It’s time to do some self-introspection. The whole experience needs to be analysed and structured to decide on your professional journey.

At this stage, you can ask yourself some questions to make the final decision. The questions can be,

  • Which department gets me excited about doing work?
  • How my personality will help in my chosen field?
  • What has my practical experience taught me about the industry?
  • What is the future scope in my field?
  • Which false perception did my internship or talk with the alumni break?

You can also discuss with your parents and close friends the learnings that you had and the decision that you are making. But remember to discuss with people with optimistic attitudes, and not those who confuse more. The whole aim of introspection is to take time and not take decisions in the surge of emotions.

The learnings from the internship, conversations with industry people, and your introspection can clear the career path you want to take.

But, what if there comes a situation where you want to make a career change, and you are not happy with the current path. The following tip is for you.

1.4 Career change

Before going further, it’s important to know that changing career paths have been quite common and more frequent in recent years. So, don’t feel guilty. Instead, you should feel proud of yourself to acknowledge the need to change.

Career change is a gradual process, and you don’t need to make an immediate change and get into a regretful situation.

First, analyze the reason for giving up on your previous career field. If the reason seems genuine and not an emotional surge, then you are good to move. But remember that every field has some drawbacks, and you definitely can’t change your career with the perception of a rosy situation in the other field.

You must stick to the present field till you don’t find a concrete future path. During this time, you must talk with people working in your desired field. You can also follow the previous steps mentioned for the same.

In this present time of easy digital access, there are tons of free courses in all fields. Try to leverage this opportunity, and complete these free courses. Once you find an interest and generate a liking, look for paid professional courses and post-graduation courses.

In this way, you can make a successful career change without falling into a dead end or a trap of confusion.

people doing interaction and work together

Apart from choosing the right field to work in, many people face the problem of ineffective communication and a lack of presentation skills. So what is a soft skill?

Soft skills are interpersonal abilities and approaches to handling work, communications, and other workplace duty that doesn’t include your field knowledge. Your intelligence and knowledge are nothing without soft skills. They are the medium between your knowledge, thoughts, and the outer world.

Numerous surveys and research conducted by imminent institutions revealed that soft skills are in demand. One such study conducted by Udemy in 2021 concluded that the need for communication skills is on the rise.

Thus soft skills and effective communication are an integral part of career development. They are also called power skills; as they have a huge importance in the corporate world. Some of the important soft skills are:

  • Time management and Productivity
  • Emotional intelligence

So here are some tips that you can find helpful to improve your soft skills and accelerate your career success.

2.1 Written and oral communication

It is a mandatory skill to become a successful professional. Communication mastery comes from practice, and you have to have a daily commitment to become better at it. What you should remember is that your communication depends on the audience, objective, and message. A message is always SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.

a) Written communication

Written communication has simplicity, clarity, and brevity. Use frameworks like opening-body-conclusion to write formal emails, reports, and proposals. Which means,

  • Opening: Greeting with introduction
  • Body: Actual message that is clear and SMART
  • Conclusion: Summing your message and future course of action.

Work on your grammar, and use tools like Grammarly to avoid mistakes in writing. After writing, sleep over it, and read it after a while. This helps you in making corrections. Write short sentences, and avoid jargon and lengthy paragraphs.

Remember to read a lot about your topics and try to get in-depth knowledge. Reading and writing are synchronous,  and you can get better if you do it regularly.

b) Oral communication

Oral communication is an inseparable part of your job, and you must be better at it. Mastery over communication comes with initiative. You can’t keep quiet or sit in a corner in a meeting; you have to take initiative to become a better speaker.

One thing that is most overlooked in oral communication is listening. Listening is an art, and you have to not only listen to the words but understand the motive behind others’ speeches. Effective listening is the foundation of good communication.

If you are about to give a speech, try to write a small note sheet, and keep it in front of you to keep your talk in line. Have a straight posture; as confidence in speech comes through confident body language. Keep your shoulder, chest, and chin up. Maintain eye contact, and speak clearly.

In oral communication, your effectiveness depends 55% on body language, 38% on vocal and voice modulation, and 7% on verbal. Don’t consider communication as a burden, but as an opportunity to express your talent, and skills. Practice the above-mentioned steps, and you will feel more confident in your work.

2.2 Presentation skills

Presentation skills are most sought after in the corporate world. Your mastery and brilliance can’t be known to your colleague; if you don’t have good presentation skills. As most of your presentation will involve a slide show; here are certain actionable tips to remember:

  • Make T/2 number of slides, where T is the allotted time.
  • Create your script of the presentation by using frameworks like opening-body-conclusion, then move on to slide creation.
  • Make two versions of your presentation. One with less text to use during the actual presentation; the other with description to distribute in the form of PDF to others.
  • Write page numbers on each slide, and don’t forget to give credits to the images.
  • Utilise a visual-text combo, where half the slide is for an image/video, and another half for text.
  • Don’t forget to check spells at the end. Also, refrain from adding vibrant fonts and colours. Stick to brand colours and template.

Presentation is all about expressing your thoughts, opinions, and learnings. So, try to gauge the audience’s attention with your talk, rather than simply reading from slides.

2.3 Time management and productivity

Suppose you are working in your desired position where you can positively utilise your knowledge and passion. But what if the workload is high, and you are unable to tackle it? Time management and productivity are skills that are desired by every employer but not taught in schools.

Everyone has twenty-four hours, and the way to utilise is what time management is all about . Thus, if you are a master in it, you are a precious asset to any company.

a) Planning

One of the important aspects of time management is planning your tomorrow today. Every night try to plan and chalk down the tasks that need to be done tomorrow. But, seeing a huge list can be overwhelming. That’s why you have to micro-plan each hour of the day.

Suppose you have to write a report or create a presentation that has a deadline coming. You can break this activity into hours, and set the goal of writing 250 words in an hour or a certain number of slides. This breaks that big task into the small task and motivates you to take tiny steps to achieve that big goal.

b) Don’t mix two contrast tasks

One of the mistakes that many people commit is that they mix two contrasting tasks. Like, surfing on social media or talking over the phone while at work. This not only hampers productivity but also increases your working hours, which affects the work-life balance.

Try to build your work environment such that; time-wasting task becomes difficult. Like using focus apps that lock the phone or social sites for specific hours.

Assign each hour of your day to a specific task, and maintain discipline. You have to work on your habits and behaviour to become good at time management. It is also recommended to follow the teachings of people like James Clear to get actionable insight on time management, habits, and productivity.

2.4 Emotional intelligence

Let’s move on to the last skill and the most underrated one that is emotional intelligence. People will high emotional intelligence are better at leadership, teamwork, and handling real-life problems. A student or young professional must work on EQ. Here are certain aspects on which you must take action.

There come situations where you will feel an upsurge of emotions, and want to make decisions instantly. These impulsive decisions can be regretful, and you must avoid them. Throughout evolution, our brain has mastered split-second decisions, as it helped in surviving in the wild. But, in modern it can be harmful.

To avoid impulse, try to understand the message behind constant thoughts. You might find that it’s just insecurity and not reality. Thus, it’s recommended to press pause on your activities when you feel impulsive. Let this anxiety go, and think calmly to take the right future action.

Empathy is getting rare, which is an integral quality of a true leader. Due to our grading system in education, we get familiar with thinking only about our benefits and results. But, in an organization, success lies in caring for colleagues and team members.

Empathy comes when you get out of self-centeredness and put yourself in the position of others. If someone is not in a good mood, don’t blame them, instead let them have a free space, as they must be going through personal problems in life.

Due to constant target chasing, sometimes we focus on numbers and not the person behind them. Thus, it is far better to have a talk and understand the reason for their productivity. Empathy creates bonds of trust and care which makes a human or a group of people do great things.

c) Happiness

Happiness is the driving force behind most of the things that we do. But, there is an aspect of happiness that needs to be said. Sometimes, happiness can overestimate our potential to commit things that are far fetched.

Thus, in happy moments, don’t make decisions or commit to doing certain things for someone. These are small mistakes that can create future problems and image damage. Always take decisions when your mind is calm, and you are in the position to analyse the situation in front of you.

Emotional intelligence is a vast field, and we have covered a few aspects here to help you become more human and professional in the workplace . Apply some of the tips in your daily life; to see positive changes.

Here are some points to sum up the whole career guidance manual.

  • Many people feel guilty about choosing the wrong career. Thus, career advice plays a crucial role for freshers and students.
  • Talk with people in your aspiring positions, and alumni via face to face and social media to know the situation in the industry.
  • Career change is a gradual process, and you must make a tiny transition rather than a big leap.
  • Soft skills are in huge demand, now termed power skills.
  • Communication mastery comes with practice. Align it with your audience, and use a framework like opening-body-conclusion.
  • Presentation is a supplement to your knowledge showcasing. You are the real star of a presentation.
  • Time management requires planning, focus, and discipline.
  • Emotional intelligence requires you to understand your thoughts and the message behind them. Calmly take decisions, and have empathy for others.

Speech Writing: Format, Tips, Examples & More (How to Guide)

Speech Writing

Table of Contents

introduction to speech writing.

The ability to speak a powerful and inspiring speech is a valuable skill. These kinds of speeches leave an impression on the listener, and people remember them for days. This skill is necessary not only at the school level but also at the workplace. However, not many people can verbalize a speech on the spot. Speech writing is also an art, as is giving speeches. The words must be carefully chosen to invoke the right emotion in people. One wrong word or phrase and the momentum of the speech is broken. To help students and people write the best speeches of their lives, a list of tips, outlines, and samples will help.

How to Start a Speech?

Starting a speech the right way can be the success of the entire speech. Not only with the audience will be engaged and interactive, but they will also remember it. Speech writing to include a solid start to the speech is an art that is worth exploring. Per the format of a speech, the starting or the conclusion of the speech is short and at the beginning.

One way for a strong start to a speech is to state a quote. A quote that is relevant to the topic from a well-known person should be chosen. It will grab the listeners’ attention and set the tone for the rest of the speech. For example, one good quote that can be included regarding speech writing in English is “It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech”- Mark Twain.

Many speakers also include a question, in particular, a rhetorical question, at the start of their speeches. They then attempt to answer the said question. One advantage of including questions at the start of the speech is that it prompts an answer. Even though the speaker is not calling for answers from the audience, one tends to think of the answer immediately. For instance, “Who wouldn’t like to live on a beach?”

A Scenario

Another way to put the audience straight into the topic of the speech is to create a scenario. Create a situation, add details, a situation and then ask questions. Being able to visualize situations will engage the audience and also get them excited for the speech. This is because the entire speech now seems like one continuous conversation. A light and entertaining mood is set in the room. For instance, “Imagine you are on a beach. The sun is shining, the wind is blowing. It is not too hot, and the weather is pleasant. How do you feel?”

Statistics or Current Event

Quoting a statistic is an excellent way to start the speech. One must make sure to make the statistic relevant not only to the topic but to the audience as well. Similarly, one can also state some news or a piece of a current event. It will trigger people to feel the way the speaker wants them to. For instance,” Over 90% of the people where will…”

Powerful Statement

Speakers, especially politicians, often start their speeches with a powerful statement. The statement can be a shocking or a powerful one. The goal here is to let the audience guess what will be spoken next. Following the statement, take a moment of silence to let the statement sink in and make a more impactful effect. For instance,” We cannot win, (pause)…is what everyone will tell you.”

Speech Writing Format

Any good speech is made as per a speech format. There is a start of the speech, the main body of the speech with all the facts. In the end, the conclusion of the speech summarises the entire speech. Any speech, when made properly, can capture the listener’s attention. To master the art of speech writing, students and working professionals must know the format of a good speech.

The greeting or the introduction is the first part of the speech. It is a quick greeting to the audience while introducing the speaker and the topic of the speech. This initial part of the speech is especially important. A proper attention-grabbing introduction will set the tone for the rest of the speech. When writing the introduction, remember that the goal is to persuade the listener to pay attention. A good greeting has a brief overview of the topic. For instance, “Today, I will be talking about… “. A quick quote relevant to the topic, an incident or a joke to relax the audience can also be put here. For example, ” Today’s topic reminds me of this one incident…”. Be sure to keep the introduction brief but interesting. Also, in the speech, the date is written at the start.

With the initial introductions out of the way, the next is to tackle the meat of the speech. The main body of speech writing is the section where the actual topic will be talked about. Here, the main body has all the main features or points of the speech topic, along with pros and cons. This is where the speaker talks about most of the reasoning and objections of the topic. Speech writing in the main body must be done slowly and carefully. Cover around five to seven points about the topic and include plenty of examples. Prepare a flowchart of the main body and ensure a general understanding of the topic. For example, when talking about stress management, start by explaining what stress management is and why it is important. Finish it up with some techniques for managing stress.

Factual data

To further persuade the audience during speeches, including statistics and facts is the best to go about it. Statistics included during speech writing prove arguments and support the speaker’s ideas. It will also give more credibility, showing that the writer has done their research. Numbers will also impact the listener, and they will remember the presentation. It is also important to include the right type of statistics in speeches. The source of the fact must be credible. Government websites, academic journals and scholarly websites are good places to look for statistics. When speaking, also remember to cite the sources to give due credit. Some speech writing examples for facts is to look for actual pollution levels when talking about pollution.

The speech’s ending or conclusion is just as important as the introduction. It is something that the audience will take away with them and remember. Generally, in speech writing, the ending must include a summary of the entire speech. This is so to remind the audience of all the points made. A call to action, in line with the rest of the speech or a simple story, is also a good way to wrap up the speech. Like in the introduction, the speaker can also end with a quote at the conclusion.

Furthermore, all speech endings should have an acknowledgement of the audience and the guests. Thank them for their time and express gratitude. For instance, “Finally, I would like to thank the audience and the guest of honour for lending me your time.”

Outline for Speech Writing

To continue the discussion of speech writing, the next step is to understand the format for writing speeches. The format and outline are general and different depending on the speech’s content. However, generally, the outline has a greeting, the main body, factual data and an ending or conclusion.

Tips to Keep in Mind for Speech Writing

Speech writing takes time to perfect. Good speeches are researched and leave the audience with things to take away from the speech. One could, however, also benefit from some tips to ace writing speeches.

Understand the audience.

Take time to understand the type of people listening to the speech. Evaluate if the chosen speech topics would be interesting or appealing to them. How big of a group is it, and what are their experiences and expectations from the speech? Is a more in-depth and fact-based speech appropriate or a more light-hearted inspirational one?

Choose the message of the speech.

Decide on a core message of the speech that will resonate with the topic. All points made within the speech must be around this core message. Shape the message to be relatable to the audience. Put enough content and research into it to show that the speaker cares about the topic. Also, the message should not be too hard or advanced to avoid confusion.

This is the part that will take the most time. Take the time to do in-depth research. Exhaust all known resources on the topic. Write up all the ideas together and try to connect them. Look up numbers and statistics from Government websites. Put the content together in a rough format and rearrange them. Look for holes in the speech and fill them up.

Format of the speech

Depending on the goal of the speech, create a structure or an outline. Generally, most speeches have an introduction, the main body and a conclusion. Pace the speech to let the audience think, get their interest and drive into the main message. Do not make it too long, as people tend to have shorter attention spans.

All the most popular speakers in the world have taken the time to perfect their craft. They have had failures where their speeches did not work out as they intended. However, they got up and started again through practice. Get a friend or a mentor who can give honest opinions. Practice by standing in front of the mirror. Adjust the tone and the volume as necessary.

Examples for Speech Writing

Let’s see what good speeches can look like with the help of a few speech examples.

If I Had a Superpower

Good Morning Everyone. Thank you for allowing me to talk on such an exciting topic. You hear the word superpowers, and one immediately thinks of being selfish. I wish I could be strong, I wish I were the smartest person etc. But what if we were to choose a superpower that can help the people around us?

I have the option to choose my superpower, I would choose the ability to find cures for diseases like Cancer. Of course, there is the topic of natural selection, but I have a reason why I want this superpower. So many people have been taken away from life-threatening diseases due to pure neglect. They could have gone on to make important discoveries and save more people. So many people would have been able to contribute positively to society had they not attracted a disease and passed.

With power comes great responsibility. I feel a superpower like this can be easily misused. I would therefore prefer not to have any superpower and find my way through my struggles.

 Yoga and Its Benefits

Good Morning Principal M’am, teachers, and my classmates. On the occasion of Yoga Day, I prepared a short speech on the benefits of yoga. Hopefully, by the end of my speech, we will be doing yoga every day, not one day in a year.

On June 21, the world celebrates the ancient art of Yoga. Yoga is much more than a means of exercising. Our lives are super busy these days, and the stress builds up in us. Combined with our poor diets, we manifest diseases that stay with us for years. All of these can be tackled with Yoga. We have better immune systems and normal blood pressure levels and are healthier.

Who wouldn’t want to run around and play with our grandkids someday? I would surely like that. I plan to do yoga every day. What about you?

Speech Writing is an art.

How often have people observed politicians on television giving awe-inspiring speeches? One common thread in most of these speeches is that they are brief, simple and leave an impact. These are speeches often prepared by an expert and leave one wondering how to give a speech with a similar impact. However, it is also possible to replicate it at home for a speech at work or college. Writing speeches is easy. It includes proper structure, basic grammar and framing of the speech to grab the audience’s attention.
