How to Finish a Huge Assignment or Project Overnight

The great American writer Mark Twain once said,

“Never put off till tomorrow what may be done the day after tomorrow just as well.”

When we live by that advice, though, we sometimes find ourselves chugging concentrated coffee at 2 a.m. in a valiant effort to stay awake and finish a huge project that’s due in 6 hours.

As productive as I’d like to think I am… I’ve been there.

If you’ve been there as well – or maybe if you’re there right now – this week’s video is for you. I’m not going to waste time lecturing you about the importance of planning, there are other videos for that – let’s just look at the best plan of attack when you find yourself in a time crunch.

Now, we’re going to look at some specific concepts related to planning and willpower in a minute – The Impact Effort Matrix, Ego Depletion – but let’s start with the foundation: location selection .

I think your location is vital when you’re working under pressure, and personally I like to pick my study locations based on their “vibe” – that is, what’s going on around me. I tend to favor coffee shops and libraries – I still go to my university library at times even though I’ve graduated – because I work well when I’m surrounded by other people who are also working. Also, close proximity to caffeine is helpful.

The most important part of location selection, though, is avoiding the “call of the pillow”. When you’re studying in a time crunch, it’s likely you’ll be doing it late into the night. That’s why you want to get as far away from your bed as possible.

The later it gets, the more you’ll start rationalizing how good a nap might be and the more you’ll start deciding that certain parts of your project don’t matter. So pick a place where going to bed would be more effort than finishing the next part of your project.

That piece of business taken care of, it’s now time to plan your efforts . Before you start working, take some time to break down your workload into individual parts. Then, it’s time to figure out which ones should get the bulk of your attention.

Dwight Eisenhower often remarked that,

“What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.”

In the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People , Steven Covey popularized the “Eisenhower Decision Matrix”, which is based on this principle. In the matrix, tasks are categorized based on their importance and urgency.

When you’re in a time crunch, though, everything can seem urgent – so importance is the factor you should focus on in this case. To that end, let’s use a similar but more fitting tool – the Impact/Effort matrix .

Impact/Effort Matrix

Here, tasks in a project are given scores based on their impact to the overall success of the project and the effort it will take to implement them. To illustrate how this works, here’s an example from my life.

When I was a senior in college, one of my final projects was building a web app. My idea was called AMPanic, and it was an app that would require you to log in and tell if you’re awake before a certain time – otherwise it would send an embarrassing email to someone. This was actually the precursor to the early wake-up system I use now, which I detailed in this video .

With this project, though, I found myself in a time crunch trying to finish it. So I broke my project down into different parts that I’d have to code and prioritized them using this Impact/Effort matrix.

The core functionality – the code that would let you set an alarm and an email message, the code that would schedule and send the email on time, and the function to cancel the email if the user checked in on time in the morning – those required a lot of effort to build, but they also had the highest impact on the project.

On the other hand, some parts of the site – like the About, FAQ, and Contact pages – didn’t have as high of an impact, but they were low-effort tasks. Since they didn’t take much time to create, I made sure to include them to make the site look more complete.

The main element of the site that I chose NOT to focus on was the user registration and login system. A proper one needs functions for resetting passwords, but I decided that the core alarm setting functionality would be more important to my grade since that was the point of the whole project. So I used a login system I had written for an old project and didn’t bother creating a way to reset passwords.

In the end, it was a worthwhile decision; the alarm system was more advanced than most of the other projects in the class, so I ended up getting an A.

To assign Impact/Effort scores to each component of your project – or each assignment if you’re juggling multiple – consider the following factors:

  • What the core deliverables are
  • The grading criteria for the project, what which components count for the most points
  • What percentage of your grade each assignment counts for
  • How much each component will contribute to the knowledge you need to have for tests, which usually impact your grade the most

Once you’e assigned scores to each component, I think it’s a good idea to tackle the ones with the highest impact and highest effort first. This is due to Ego Depletion – a phenomenon explained in Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking, Fast and Slow . Citing research from the psychologist Roy Baumeister, he reveals that:

“…an effort of will or self-control is tiring; if you have had to force yourself to do something, you are less willing or less able to exert self-control when the next challenge comes around.”

Use the bulk of your willpower to complete the harder tasks first; that way, you’ll only have to deal with low-effort, high-impact tasks when you’re feeling drained.

That’s where we’re going to close for this week. If you select your location well, plan based on impact and effort, and tackle your tasks in a way that utilizes your willpower effectively, you’ll make if through your time crunch in one piece.

My assignment is due tomorrow and I haven't even started it yet!

assignment is due tonight

Well, if it really is due tomorrow, let’s do this and do it quick! You could have anything due tomorrow, so instead of a step-by-step guide let’s focus on some tips and tricks to pull off this craziness. Legions of students before you have done it and legions of students after you will do it so have faith—you can do it 💪.

1. Prioritise

This probably doesn’t need to be said but if it’s due tomorrow then clear your schedule tonight—this is absolutely your top priority right now! Normally we recommend getting plenty of sleep but if you have something due tomorrow, tonight's the night to push your bedtime back a little bit (still no all-nighters though!)

2. Get your head in the game

Okay, no matter how much of a mountain it seems, this has to be done tonight. Don’t let yourself even consider the option of handing it in late—just thinking that will make it even harder to finish in time.

It’s time to get your head in the game and focus on the task ahead. You want to grab some water and make sure you’ve eaten. Then, set yourself up in a clean, bright area, find a supportive chair and grab all of the resources you'll need to do your assignment.

You can check out our video on Study Spaces for everything you need to set up the perfect workspace.

3. Work out exactly what you need to do

To work as efficiently as possible you should first understand exactly what you need to do.

That means you need to think about exactly what ideas or topics you need to cover and what your approach should be. So, read the assignment and marking criteria carefully and identify any keywords. Also highlight any important details, like the word count or page limit, the submission format and any other info that will affect how you approach this task.

This will vary massively depending on the assignment. The point is basically just that you should make sure you know exactly what you need to do before you start. Trust me, it’ll make everything quicker if you do ⏰.

4. Do a brief plan

To make sure we can get this done properly in one night, the next step is to plan your answer. This will make it a lot easier to start writing and, if you have to do any research, you will know exactly what you’re looking for.

So, sketch out a brief plan onto a page. Work out what needs to go into your answer and how it’s going to be structured. It might feel difficult or pointless to plan at this point, but if you can get some of the hard work out of the way here it’ll become much easier to write!

5. Research efficiently

Now, this one is obviously only relevant if you need research for your answer. Gathering research for an essay or report can take time. By using the keywords from the syllabus and assessment notification, you’ll be able to focus on the resources that you actually need. As far as you can, drop your research straight into the plan and you’ll be moving much more efficiently.

Don’t forget to reference as you go! This will save you time and ensure you don’t make any mistakes 😅.

6. Quality over quantity

This is a seriously important tip. When you’re really under pressure, it can be tempting to just smash out as many words as possible so you can hit that word count—don’t do this! It’s just going to give you a whole lot of waffle and even worse marks.

Instead of waffling, stick to your answer plan, use your research and fall back on the ideas in our lessons . It will get you a much better result for not that much extra work ✅.

7. Do your final read over tomorrow morning

Once you’ve finally pulled off that answer, it’s time to go to bed. You’re probably going to be too tired, too stressed and too wrapped up in your answer to be able to give it a proper check and edit.

So, just get some sleep now, set the alarm 30mins earlier tomorrow and read over it again with fresh eyes and a clear mind. You should be able to pick up any little mistakes and make the whole thing read a lot better and generally end up with a stronger answer!

Even though this isn’t ideal, you can still pull it off! The secret is to be as efficient as possible. So, keep calm, find out exactly what you need to do, plan, research properly and don’t waffle.

Oh and next time, don’t leave your assignments to the last minute 😅. Instead, watch our lesson on Planning an Assignment and use the downloadable planner so you aren’t in this sticky situation again.

Homework, a necessary evil according to many teachers, has a lot of students tied up in knots. Some students can never seem to get things turned in on time. In fact, many students do not even realize that they  have  homework until a friend from class texts them or they overhear someone in the halls talking about Ms. So-and-so's terrible, no-good, awful, horrifying worksheet for Chemistry that is due the next day. These five tips for completing your homework on time, however, should help you get that homework finished on time.

Tip 1: Rely On a Planning System

Most of you by now are well acquainted with a homework planner. It has the dates, the school subjects you are taking, and a whole lot of blank space to write down your homework assignments. Use these planners if you have them. Writing with an actual pencil or pen may seem almost archaic what with technology virtually doing everything for us, but the kinesthetic movement of writing down an assignment into one of those little squares (Language Arts test tomorrow - STUDY TONIGHT), will actually help solidify that homework in your brain.

Plus, when you are packing up to go home at the end of the school day, all you have to do is open up that planner to see which books, folders, and binders need to go home with you so you will not miss out anything that you need to do that evening.

Some people  hate  using planners. They'd rather walk on a pile of crushed glass than actually write something down in a planner. That's quite all right. One student kept a wadded up piece of paper in his pocket where he'd scrawl his assignments. It worked for him, so it was fine. For those of you not keen on planners or crumpled up notes, your phone can come in really handy. Just download a productivity app and type your assignments in there. Or, keep track of all the work due in the notes section of your phone. Or, snap a picture of the homework board in each teacher's class before you head out into the hallway. Or, if you are really dead-set against anything planner-related, then just send yourself a text after each class with your homework assignments for the night.

No matter which planning system you prefer, use it. Check off each item once you get it in your backpack. Your brain can only process so much information at a time, so you absolutely must write your homework down if you plan to complete it on time.

Tip 2: Prioritize Your Homework Assignments

All assignments are not created equal. It's strongly recommended you use a prioritizing system when you sit down at home with your homework. Try a system a little something like this:

  • Examples: Studying for a major test coming up tomorrow. Finishing a major project due tomorrow. Writing an essay worth a LOT of points that is due tomorrow.
  • Examples:  Studying for a quiz coming up tomorrow. Completing a homework sheet that is due tomorrow. Reading a chapter that is due tomorrow.
  • Examples: Studying for a spelling test that will occur on Friday. Writing a blog and posting it on the class board by Friday. Finish a book upon which you will take a quiz on Friday.
  • Examples: Reviewing chapters for the midterm exam. Working on an on-going project, research paper, or long assignment due at the end of the quarter. Completing a packet that isn't due for two weeks.

Once you've prioritized the work you have to do, complete all the 1's first, then the 2's, moving down as you go. That way, if you find yourself pressed for time because Great-Grandma decided to stop over for family dinner and your mom insisted you spend the evening playing bridge with her despite the fact that you have hours of homework ahead of you, then you will not have missed anything vitally important to your grade.

Tip 3: Get the Worst Assignment Over With First

So, maybe you absolutely hate writing essays (But, why, though when all you have to do is follow these essay tips? ) and you have a major essay staring you in the face that  must  be completed before tomorrow. You also have to study for a major math test, complete a social studies blog by Friday, study for the ACT  next month, and finish up your science worksheet from class. Your "1" assignments would be the essay and the math test. Your "2" assignment is the science worksheet, the "3" assignment is that blog, and the "4" assignment is studying for the ACT.

Ordinarily, you would start with the science worksheet because you  love  science, but that would be a big mistake. Start with those "1" assignments and knock out that essay first. Why? Because you hate it. And completing the worst assignment first gets it off your mind, out of your homework cache, and makes everything that comes after it appears to be really, really easy. It will be an absolute  joy  to complete that science worksheet once you have written the essay. Why rob yourself of joy?

Then, once you've completed the stuff due first, you can focus on putting in a little bit of time on the ACT. Easy peasy.

Tip 4: Take Planned Breaks

Some people believe that sitting down to complete homework means that you literally park your behind in a chair and you don't move it for the next four thousand hours or so. That is one of the worst study ideas in history. Your brain only has the capacity to stay focused for about 45 minutes (maybe even less for some of you) before it goes on the fritz and starts wanting to make you get up and dance the Roger Rabbit. So, schedule your study time with breaks actually built in . Work for 45 minutes, then take a 10-minute break to do whatever it is people your age like to do. Then, rinse and repeat. It looks a little something like this:

Homework Time:

  • 45 minutes: Work on "1" assignments, starting with the absolute worst.
  • 10 minutes: Get a snack, play Pokemon Go!, surf Instagram
  • 45 minutes: Work on "1" assignments again. You know you didn't finish.
  • 10 minutes: Do some jumping jacks, dance the Macarena, polish your nails.
  • 45 minutes: Work on "2" assignments and maybe even finish with any 3s and 4s. Put everything in your backpack.

Completing your homework on time is a learned skill. It requires some discipline and not everyone is naturally disciplined. So, you have to practice checking that you have everything you need for homework when you are still at school, prioritizing your work, plunging into the assignments you loathe, and taking planned breaks. Isn't your grade worth it?

You bet it is.

How strict should you be? A guide to assignment due dates.

assignment is due tonight

Colleges typically require instructors to include a calendar of assignment due dates in every course syllabus. But most syllabi also include a disclaimer that assignment deadlines are subject to change.

So, how flexible should deadlines really be in a college course?

Be Flexible, or be Rigid, but Always be Consistent

Be consistent in your approach to deadline flexibility, whether you never accept late work or are always willing to make an exception. Nothing irritates strong students more than their instructor announcing, “Since so many of you asked for more time on the assignment that was due today, I’m extending its deadline to next week.”

Syllabi should always include a clearly stated policy about the circumstances under which late work might be accepted, if at all.

But should this policy be applied equally to low-stakes and high-stakes assignments?

Low-Stakes Assessments

If a course has many low-stakes assessments, like quizzes or homework problems, those assignments are usually due on the same day each week.

For example, if class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, there might a reading quiz due every Monday, to ensure that students are prepared for the week’s in-class discussions, and a homework problem due every Friday, to verify understanding of the week’s concepts.

Here are three solid approaches to deadline flexibility for low-stakes assessments:

1. Not flexible: Late work is never accepted

If a student misses a deadline, they receive zero points on that assignment.

This approach works best in courses that have many low-stakes assignments, such as reading quizzes on every textbook chapter, where missing one or two deadlines will not jeopardize a student’s understanding of the core concepts nor greatly impact their final letter grade.

2. Somewhat flexible: Late work is accepted, at a penalty

If a student misses a deadline, they can submit the assignment late, but their score will be penalized a specified amount (e.g. -5 points).

This approach works best in courses where content acquisition is scaffolded such that missing one assignment will negatively impact a student’s understanding of core concepts and successful completion of future assignments. In this case, students who miss deadlines should be permitted to complete the missed assignments, but with a small scoring penalty to encourage on-time submissions in future weeks.

3. Very flexible: Late work is made up, with instructor permission

If a student misses a deadline, they must contact the instructor and arrange an alternate way to complete the assignment (e.g. by taking a make-up quiz during the instructor’s office hours).

This approach works best in courses where low-stakes assessments are considered part of a student’s participation grade. In this case, missing a deadline is like missing a class meeting. Students should be encouraged to initiate contact with the instructor to arrange a way to verify their understanding of the missed assignment’s concepts.

High-Stakes Assessments

Every course has one or more high-stakes assessments, such as exams or research papers. These assessments are weighted more heavily (worth more of the overall course grade) than lower-stakes assessments because these are higher-level demonstrations of students’ proficiency in the course outcomes. Failure to successfully complete high-stakes assessments generally leads to failure of the entire course.

What kind of flexibility is appropriate then for key, high-stakes course assessments?

1. Not flexible: Deadlines do not change, under any circumstances

If a student misses a deadline, they receive zero points on that assessment.

This is the most common approach to deadlines for high-stakes assessments. It is rare for a college instructor to permit students to make up a missed midterm or final exam because students making up an exam would receive the unfair advantage of more time to prepare for the exam. Also, many final exams are scheduled for the very end of term, when there is no time remaining for make-up testing before instructors must report course grades to the college.

2. Somewhat flexible: Deadlines are extended, at a penalty

If a student misses a deadline, they can submit the assessment late, but their score will be penalized a specified amount (e.g. one letter grade per day).

This approach is more common for midterm assessments, or for courses with single high-stakes assessments, such as a research paper that students work on throughout the term. If students who miss the deadline for a high-stakes assessment can still submit their work, but their score is heavily penalized, the course grades will accurately reflect the students’ term-long proficiency in the course outcomes. For example, a student who earned “A” scores all term but submitted their final paper one day late could still finish the course with a “B” grade.

Remember, flexibility around assignments should be geared towards what makes sense in your course and for your students. While there are a lot of possible variations in regards to policy, the most critical element is to be clear and upfront with your students early in the term. This will help avoid confusion and complaints – and help you keep your sanity at the end of the term when students come looking for extra chances to make up missed work!

Assignment due next week: what do I do now?

Sand close up.

I’m not going to do well in this assignment, I don’t have enough time.

What if: you have an upcoming assignment deadline due soon, say in a week.

Now that you’ve started unpacking the question, and looking at the reading material, you realise it might take longer than a week to plan, research and write out the assignment.

What are you going to about it?

If this sounds familiar, you might want to take a step back to evaluate how you have come to this position. It might feel as though you have left things too late, but the situation might not be as bad as you think.

Rationalising your thoughts will help you to take the next step.

assignment is due tonight

Are you spending time worrying about your deadline instead of doing the work?

It’s okay to worry a little bit about your work. But you have to start doing something towards your goals otherwise you risk overthinking and delivering nothing. Do the smallest possible task related to your assignment, start with just half an hour of focused work. As you see yourself achieving this mini goal, you will feel more encouraged to continue.

  • Do you have other commitments that are taking up potential studying time?

Where can you delegate or let go of some commitments this week, just until your deadline is over?

That can help free up some time during your week.

  • Do you find some elements of this assignment much more challenging than others?
  • Are you put-off doing any parts of your assignment?
  • Can you be more accountable to yourself in making sure your assignment is progressing?

You don’t want to let the lack of discipline compromise the quality of your overall work. Not everyone will enjoy all parts of the assignments they are given, but that doesn’t mean you should give less attention to parts that you don't enjoy doing.

Try giving yourself something to look forward to at the end of the session, or the day, to keep you motivated. Break up your work into achievable, mini-tasks, or ask a friend to work with you where you can.

Look for the little things that will keep you motivated and focused towards completing these smaller tasks.

  • Do you feel that it is unrealistic to complete this task within the time you have been given?
  • Or, have you left it late, and now have to work with the time you’ve got left?

If you are unclear, speaking to your tutor might help you come to terms with the expectations of this assignment. This might also help you understand whether you need to refine the way you set goals leading up to your deadlines.

What can you do next time to avoid being in this situation again?

Sand castles on a beach.

If you really want to do well, you can with commitment.

Doubts and negative thoughts may arise, but how you choose to respond to them will determine how they impact your work.

It’s up to you to decide what you do with the time you have left.

The assignment is due tonight?: Limiting deadlines to next class can help students separate academic and personal time

Molly Phan , Opinion Editor | December 10, 2021

The Catalyst / Molly Phan

Juniors in math teacher Leonardo Bardomero’s classroom view lessons on their laptops, instead hard copy textbooks or handouts.

For high school students, it is not uncommon to be overwhelmed with busy schedules. Between heavy work loads from honors and AP courses, electives, clubs, sports and extracurriculars, it can be difficult for many to set time aside for themselves. One way to limit the stress that comes with students’ busy lives is to also limit the technology we use for assignments in and out of the classroom.

During the times of distance learning over the past roughly two years, the way students and teachers used technology to organize lessons and assignments has become much more advanced. But with the return to on-campus learning, this constant usage of online learning platforms, such as Schoology, seems to be both a blessing and a curse.

Although online lessons and assignments have proven to be an efficient and organized way of teaching and learning, students and teachers must realize that it is not essential all of the time. Through these platforms, teachers have the ability to assign strict deadlines at any time, which can be hard on students who have priorities other than their homework after school or on the weekends.

Take students who are involved in after school activities, for example. If a homework assignment is due at eight or nine P.M. online the day the work was assigned and they have other obligations, such as sports or club meetings during those times, they are put at a disadvantage trying to balance those assignments and their outside activities.

Even though it is more efficient to submit and assign work over platforms, such as Schoology, homework assignments should be due at the beginning of their next class period and not whenever the teacher decides they should be submitted. When students are asked to keep track of various homework deadlines for all of their classes, instead of just completing assignments before their next class, it can feel as if their school work is taking over their lives.

These challenges for students can be solved by simply reducing the amount we use the internet for assignments. Schools can choose to implement more physical or even handwritten assignments so students can physically turn in their work and not have to be overwhelmed with the scattered online deadlines. Through our months and months of being forced to learn through Zoom, it was made clear that staring at our computer screens was tedious and tiring.

We should take advantage of being back in the classroom by using worksheets, notebooks and pens, instead of Google documents. Through these changes, students will be able to show their work clearer and map out their thinking better than they are able to on their computers.

Even though our personal laptops are an essential resource to the students, teachers and faculty at NDB, the overuse of this technology can be harmful to everyone’s well-being, especially students.

Along with all they have to deal with, they should not be expected to constantly keep up with various deadlines and notifications from their classes while outside of the classroom. Time after school or on the weekends is personal time for students, so being bombarded with online school work can make it difficult to separate academic and personal life.

What Assignment Due 11:59 PM means: What Comes After

What Assignment Due 11:59 PM means: What Comes After

Assignment Due 1159 PM

Assignment Due 1159 PM

Assignment due dates are part of the assignment itself. The instructor/teacher/professor wants to determine whether their students can adhere to simple instructions.

This is the reason why assignments that are delivered late attract fines in terms of deduction in marks or even rejection.

assignment is due tonight

Yes, some of the instructors are very strict when it comes to assignment due dates and they can reject your assignment even when it is a few minutes late!

Now, instructors can give students various due dates that determine the date, hour, and minute in which they are required to submit their completed work.

They may decide to set those due dates or let the plagiarism-checking platforms such as Turnitin or Blackboard set default deadlines.

Note that some institutions only allow their students to submit their work through such platforms so that the assignments can be automatically checked for plagiarism.

That being said, let us explore what the most common due dates and times mean for students and the submission of assignments.

What does Due 11:59 PM Mean

11:59 PM is one of the most common assignments’ due time (deadline) given to students. I know you may be wondering why this is the case. Why not any other time of the day?

Well, the reason is that in the contemporary world, institutions of learning may have students from different time zones who may be attending online classes or are required to submit their homework at the same time.

In assignment submission, 11:59 PM means that the paper or essay is due at the very last minute of that day and not even a second or a minute late. If as a student you upload a file one minute after 11:59 PM, will have submitted on the next day 00:00 AM, and not the previous day, which is a minute earlier.

For example, if the instructor states that the assignment is due, let’s say, on Friday the 16th, students should deliver their work by 11:59 PM on Friday the 16th. If you upload it on Saturday the 17th then you are late because the time will be 00:00 hours, a new day.

11.59 pm

To coordinate the due time, a specific due date has to be set in which the final day to submit the assignments is set.

A complete day is made up of 24 hours with the start of the day being at midnight.

Midnight is written in 24hrs clock as 00:00 hours.

What this means is that when the clock reads 00:00 hours, we have entered another day.

Therefore, if students were required to submit on the previous day, it means that they are late.

Is 11:59 Pm Morning or Night?

am and pm

To some of us, determining whether 11:59 PM is morning or night can be confusing.

Some of the genuine reasons for this confusion are that the “PM” initials signify nighttime and most of the time zones in the world are within the dark side of the earth; meaning that they are experiencing night.

However, 00:00 hours or midnight is considered to be part of the morning because it is the start of a new day.

The problem is that 11:59 PM and 00:00 hours are separated by less than 1 minute (59 seconds) and the former is considered night while the latter is considered morning. Well, all the factors held constant, 11:59 PM should be considered night.

Don’t be confused by the aforementioned technicalities. What matters is the time of day. If it is 11:59 PM, the day has ended and a new day will begin at 00:00 hours midnight.

What Comes After 11:59 PM?

As aforementioned, 11:59 PM signifies the end of a complete day. A complete day is made up of 24 hours and 11:59 PM in 24 hours style clock is written as 23:59 hours.

This indicates that only less than a minute is left for the 24 hour-day to end. Therefore, when 11:59 PM passes, a new day comes when the clock indicates 00:00 hours or midnight.

What Does “Due Tomorrow At 11:59 PM” Mean?

As we have noted, a complete day is made up of 24 hours. What this means is that for us to experience a complete “today”, we must experience it from midnight (00:00 hours/midnight) to 23:59 hours/11:59 PM.

don't be late

Therefore, when someone tells you that they expect something tomorrow, it means that today must pass; or rather we must pass 11:59 PM and transition to 12 AM or 00:00 hours because that would be a new day (tomorrow).

Now, if your instructor tells you that your assignment is due tomorrow at 11:59 PM, it means that they expect the assignment the next day one minute before midnight.

For example, if today is Friday the 16th and the instructor has told students that their assignment is due tomorrow at 11:59 PM, they will have to submit their work by Saturday the 17th at 11:59 PM. If students submit their work one minute after that, they will have delivered on a Sunday morning (12 AM or 00:00 hours).

What Happens when you Submit an Assignment at 11:59 Pm?

If you submit your assignment at exactly 11:59 PM, you are okay because you have not breached the deadline.

An important thing you should note as students is that when your instructors ask you to submit your assignment, they tell you to do so via plagiarism-checking tools such as Turnitin or Blackboard. Such tools set their default deadlines at 11:59 PM because it is the end of a complete day.

They do not count the seconds between 11:59 PM and 12 AM. According to such tools, you only need to submit your work before the clock in your time zone reads 00:00 hours or midnight.

Tips on how to Submit an Assignment at 11:59 PM

1. upload one file.

upload one file

As noted, students should make sure that they upload their assignments before midnight because the assignments will be past due.

If you are submitting your assignment at 11:59 PM, it means that you only have less than 1 minute (60 seconds) to upload your assignment files.

To ensure that your assignment is successfully uploaded within a few seconds, it is best to upload it as one file to avoid wasting time. It takes more time to upload several files, meaning that you will be late.

2. Use Fast Internet

Bearing in mind that you only have a few seconds to upload your assignment files, you should use fast internet. Fast internet will allow you to upload your files within a short time and beat the deadline.

Slow internet is not only annoying but it can make you submit your work past the deadline because by the time it uploads the complete file, the 59-second window will have passed.

3. Ensure the Computer is Plugged

This should be an obvious thing to do. Your computer should be plugged in to ensure that there are no disruptions when uploading your assignment files.

4. Upload a Small Size File

Small file sizes can be uploaded faster compared to larger files. Additionally, if your internet is slow, the process of uploading a small-size file will be faster.

Larger files will take more time even when there is moderate-speed internet.

5. Do not Close the Window/tab

It is also very important to not close the window or tab of your browser as you are uploading your assignment. This is because if you close, the window or tab will take more time to reload the content and this will make you late.

6. Wait until the Upload is Confirmed

successful upload

Finally, it is important to wait until the uploaded assignment has been confirmed.

Do not be in a hurry to close the browser window/tab before confirming that the file upload has been successful.

This is because it might not be successful at times and you may be required to retry uploading the file again.

Therefore, to avoid submitting your assignments late and consequently being penalized, take note of the explanations and tips in this article.

Where are these sentences from? Although "assignment" has several meanings, here we imagine it is a piece of work as part of your studies. "Due" is the deadline for when it needs to be handed in. Of course, you can hand it in before midnight, so there is no need for this to get in the way of whatever you have planned for that time.

From youtube comments: Full sentence is: Me when I'm playing video games then suddenly remember that I have an assignment due at midnight.

Take a look up at the sky tonight, Iowa. You may see the northern lights

assignment is due tonight

You may want to look up in the sky this weekend, Iowans.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts the potential for a severe geomagnetic storm beginning Friday evening. Geomagnetic storm levels could continue Saturday evening, and possibly Saturday overnight, said Shawn Dahl, a service coordinator with the prediction center in an email to the Register.

When a coronal mass ejection, or an eruption of solar material, reaches Earth, a geomagnetic storm can occur, according to the prediction center.

Among the impacts of this storm is that an aurora borealis, often referred to as the northern lights, may be visible for people across America.

Here’s what to know so you don’t miss out on a striking display of lights in the sky.

Can I see the northern lights in Iowa?

Iowans can expect to see the northern lights this weekend, Dahl said.

The geomagnetic storm has the potential to be considered a G4 on NOAA’s Space Weather Scales, considered severe, beginning Friday evening and into Saturday, according to Dahl.

A G4, according to the scale of 1-5, means an aurora can be seen “as low as Alabama and northern California.”

Friday night will have a stronger possibility of seeing the aurora in Iowa, according to an updated forecast posted Friday morning by the Space Weather Prediction Center.

What time can I see the northern lights tonight?

To see the northern lights, you’ll need clear skies.

Friday night could see rain in the early evening in central Iowa before turning mostly clear around 7 p.m. For eastern Iowa, rain could stick around through about 10 p.m.

In Des Moines, Ames and Iowa City, Saturday night is expected to be “mostly clear,” according to the National Weather Service as of Friday morning.

To increase your chances of seeing the aurora, you should travel to areas where there is less light pollution, Dahl said.

Historically, the best time to see the lights is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

You may want to bring your phone with you when you step out to view the aurora. The camera on your device is sensitive and can pick up the lights better than your eye , USA TODAY reported.

What causes aurora borealis, aka the northern lights?

A geomagnetic storm is “a major disturbance of Earth’s magnetosphere,” according to the prediction center .

Earth’s magnetosphere protects our planet from solar and cosmic particle radiation and erosion of our atmosphere by solar wind, according to NASA .

The storm occurs due to a “very efficient exchange” of energy from solar wind — “the constant flow of charged particles streaming off the sun,” says NASA — into the space environment surrounding Earth, according to the prediction center.

A severe geomagnetic storm can cause problems for power systems, spacecraft operations and more.

Visit swpc.noaa.gov for updates on the geomagnetic storm.

What are the northern lights?

The word aurora refers to the light produced when electrons from space, traveling down Earth's magnetic field, collide with atoms and molecules of the upper atmosphere, according to the prediction center .

The colorful aurora forms when particles flowing from the sun get caught up in Earth's magnetic field. The particles interact with molecules of atmospheric gases to cause the famed glowing green and reddish colors of the aurora.

The latest on the massive solar storm

By Angela Fritz, Elise Hammond and Chris Lau, CNN

Incredible lighthouse picture from Maine

From CNN's Chris Lau

A long-exposure photo shows the aurora borealis over Portland, Maine, on May 10.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Watch the full interview with Williamson here .

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

By CNN's Chris Lau

The northern lights can be seen from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on May 10.

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle."

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe .

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

Bill Nye the Science Guy speaks to CNN on Friday, May 10.

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

From CNN's Angela Fritz

An infrared satellite image taken around 10:30 p.m. ET.

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour.

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

Aurora seen in Atlanta around 10:15 p.m. ET.

Tom Brady's First NFL Broadcast Assignment Revealed: All the Details Including His Record-Breaking Salary

Tom Brady

Tom Brady appeared at the Fox Upfronts on Monday, where details regarding his Fox debut were revealed.

Tom Brady is going to be putting his decades on the gridiron to good use as an analyst for Fox Sports , and it was revealed on Monday that his first broadcast will feature the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns.

The Week One matchup is set to be an exclusive broadcast window for Fox, putting an even bigger spotlight on Brady's debut as a sports analyst.

The official NFL schedule will not be released until Wednesday, but the league permitted Fox to announce that game ahead of time during upfronts -- thus promoting Brady's role as a color commentator.

Michael Strahan announced the news while on stage with Brady at the upfronts presentation, and Brady quipped that it will be difficult for him to get used to being impartial while covering games, but that he was excited to be a part of it all.

There are a lot of eyes on the iconic football star given the record-breaking contract Brady reportedly signed with Fox, to the tune of $375 million over 10 years.

This reportedly makes Brady the highest-paid sports broadcaster in history, and even exceeds his $30 million annual salary with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played for the last two seasons of his professional career.

With Brady in the broadcasting booth, it seems he's found a nice, new home in the world of the NFL, off the field for good.

The former NFL star spoke with ET earlier this month ahead of Netflix's The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady special, and addressed comments he made last month when  he said he "wouldn't be opposed" to someday making a comeback  and playing in the NFL once more.

When asked directly if he ever thought he'd return from retirement, Brady told ET, "No, man, I'm good. I'm in a great place."

He also addressed his forthcoming role as an analyst, telling ET, "I'm excited about working for Fox...  I've been working really hard to really understand the mechanics of what I have to do and be excited to be on TV."

Cubs Designate Richard Lovelady For Assignment

By Steve Adams | May 14, 2024 at 9:11am CDT

The Cubs designated left-hander Richard Lovelady for assignment Tuesday, per a team announcement. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to righty Tyson Miller , whose previously reported trade from Seattle to Chicago is now official.

Lovelady, 28, signed a minor league pact with the Cubs back in January and was selected to the big league roster in late April. He’s tossed 5 2/3 innings out of Craig Counsell’s bullpen and been tagged for five runs on nine hits and a pair of walks with six strikeouts. That marks the fifth big league season in which the southpaw has appeared; Lovelady made his MLB debut with the 2019 Royals and pitched in K.C. from 2019-21, and he logged 23 1/3 innings with the A’s last season. Overall, in 70 2/3 big league innings, he carries a 5.48 ERA but with a far more encouraging 22.7% strikeout rate, 8.8% walk rate and 49.8% ground-ball rate.

That blend of strikeouts, walks and grounders, coupled with a strong Triple-A track record, has made Lovelady appealing to MLB teams over the past year despite a history of success in the majors. The Cubs are his fourth organization since Opening Day 2023. Lovelady has been picked up by the Braves in a small trade, claimed off waivers by the A’s, and quickly selected to the big leagues with the Cubs.

In parts of six Triple-A seasons, Lovelady has a 2.95 ERA with a sharp strikeout, walk and ground-ball rates of 26.6%, 6.8% and 50.7%, respectively. He’s not a power arm, but he has added more than a mile per hour to both his four-seamer and sinker since last year’s showing with Oakland. He sat at 91 mph with both pitches last year but averaged 92.8 mph on the four-seam and 92.5  mph on his two-seam during his brief showing with Chicago.

Lovelady does have a minor league option remaining, so any club that picks him up via trade or waiver claim could send him to Triple-A without first passing him through waivers themselves. He’ll be traded, claimed off waivers or assigned outright to Triple-A Iowa within the next week (if he clears waivers). He’s been outrighted previously in his career, so Lovelady would have the right to reject a minor league assignment from the Cubs if he does go unclaimed.

No real surprise here with Little being able to be recalled and the Cubs needing a roster spot.

' src=

Little has definite long-term potential, but so far he lacks the control necessary to be a reliever on a contending club.I would also argue that I’d rather have Lovelady than Milller, given Miller’ propensity for the fly ball. As the weather gets warmer, that fly ball tendency isn’t going to “fly” at Wrigley Field.

Baseball has changed, teams want guys to give up fly balls. It’s pretty simple, fly balls have a BABIP well south of .200 where balls put on the ground now have a BABIP over 100 points higher and teams are more willing to give up the occasional solo home run vs the higher batting average.

Badeball has changed, implying what- that I don’t know that? Look, teams don’t want pitchers to give up fly balls when they have a strong defensive middle infield like the Cubs do (normally, when Dansby isn’t on the IL and is playing better than he has so far in 2024). And especially during hot summer days at Wrigley when the wind is blowing out ( and yes, I know the wind blows in as much or more than out).

' src=

Look it’s really just this simple. The Cubs are in a terrible stretch thanks to a crap schedule. They have 6 more games in a row and have a tired bullpen. They sacrificed a piece to get a guy who has been on the DFA list for a couple of days so he’s rested. If he makes it through the Pirate series and can get somebody out until some other pieces come back, Awesome. Either way I suspect he’ll be gone by Monday. He’s a fresh arm. Not a solution. Unless he’s a Hoyer pet, Which I doubt because they let him walk in the first place. Hoyer keeps his pets forever, Like luggage.

' src=

The bullpen issues started Day 1 of the season, and have been a nightmare ever since. It certainly hasn’t been a just a thing that recently started.

The front office thought Neris, who had a FIP like two runs higher than his ERA, was a solution for this pen. Sure, he could have been fine, if they added two other backend arms. I hate how much this front office gets stuck on developing bullpen arms from within.

Yeah? Is that why they signed Imanaga? Neris? Taillon? Traded for Almonte? Unhappy with Justin Steele? Assad?

Glad to see you STILL don’t know what you are talking about because the Cubs are signing, teaching and encouraging guys to pitch up in the zone. Soooo apparently you do, in fact, not know that.

I hate to break it to all the “should-a signed more” but Chapman, Hader, Moore, Robertson all the :”back end arms” that were available in free agency haven’t been exactly good.

So had the Cubs signed any of those guys, they would be in same position with less available money at the trade deadline.

BTW, complain about Neris but he’s been better than anyone of those guys.

Complain complain complain but it’s not the Cubs fault that Alzolay has tanked this season. He looked like a solid back end piece. They did the right thing by bring in Neris, a veteran insurance policy. Merryweather getting hurt is again, not on the Cubs. And who were you going to take off the 40 man roster to accommodate these two guys? By all means I would love for the complainers to elaborate on their insight.

' src=

It’s the other way around, Ryan—they have 5 or 6 guys that can help at the major league level in the minors that cannot come out without the risk of losing the guys above them.

They are extremely deep down to 40 men—it’s just a little more difficult when 14 of them have been on the inured list.

They would be nowhere near where they are now without the depth they have. Hopefully at some stretch they will be closer to 85-90% healthy as a team and then they can start moving guys like they really want.

You think Heart Attack Neris (name given by his teammates) has been good? He’s averaging nearly two baserunners per inning!

The Alzolay concerns started last year with his forearm strain. Pitchers that return from forearm strains without undergoing Tommy John Surgery have an ERA north of 6 in the 12 months following the injury (dating back to 2018). The Cubs should have been prepared for that.

Why do the Brewers have a solid bullpen despite losing their stud closer? Why do many other good teams not have a trainwreck of a bullpen? This isn’t a 2024 thing. This happened last year too. The Cubs clearly needed back end help, but instead they decided to pitch Leiter and Alzolay 15/30 days in August, and then can’t figure out why they both got hurt.

Cade Horton should be in the bullpen right now IMO. They can limit his innings, he would have the best stuff of anyone down there and it would give them a huge boost that they need right now.

Cuas, Little, Lovelady, Thompson and Brewer aren’t going to get the Cubs to 90-95 wins. So where’s the calvary? How does the pen get fixed before it blows another 8 games?

Not more but better use of the money he had. For instance next year let’s speculate. Gone Bellinger-? 30 million he has the opt out Gone Hendricks -16 million Gone Smyly- 11 million Gone Bote-5 million Gone Mancini,Barnhart 10 million off the books Miscellaneous-?

Needs- Starting P- Totally set Positions- PCA takes over for Belli so None Bullpen- Fine some needs

Available- Close to 80 million Dollars minus some arbitration raises

What will the fans clamor for? Spend all 80 million Smart? No F-in way.

Even if Belli opts in fine. That’s 50 million for a couple or bullpen arms. Be smart.

Without Bellinger, the Cubs would need 2 middle of the lineup bats. That’s one thing that kills this team – there’s not a big time hitter in the lineup. Even when Bellinger is in there, they need a BIG bat in addition to him. They have a deep lineup and deep farm system, but where’s the guy that makes the opposition worried when the lineup rolls over?

The Cubs have 7-8 players on their active roster that could be DFA’d or sent down tomorrow and it wouldn’t be a big loss. That’s not a recipe for success. They legitimately need 2-3 reliable bullpen arms. When they don’t make the playoffs by 1 or 2 games, people will look at games they could have won in September, but why not focus on the 8 games they blew in April and May?

7 or 8? No that’s way high. They have guys who are being paid way more money than they should but you can’t just release them and eat that money. Hoyer has made his own bed and now he has to sleep in it. Giving Smyly a player option, Re-signing Hendricks, Giving Mancini and Barnhart 2 year deals and cutting them loose after 2 months, Bote’s deal. Just wastes of money they could of used but can’t because they want to stay under the Tax. If they want to play under the tax it’s fine by me. But playing up to the tax because everybody expects a big time club to do that, You need to figure out your budget and signings better. He should take a lesson from Poles. Poles always has a fund left going into the season for emergencies. In fact if Bote was a LH bat, He’d be a Cub right now and Mastrobuoni would be gone. But it’s still dumb use of funds IMO and he has to take ownership of it.

Madrigal Gomes Mastrobouni Little Cuas Thompson Brewer

Would you be surprised if any of them were not on this roster at the end of the year? Gomes is probably the only one that will for sure be, because he’s a veteran catcher, although his bat is dead.

Bote will never be called up bc as long as he’s off the 40-man roster, his salary doesn’t count against the CBT.

Most of those guys have uses. Cuas is a project that probably won’t work because sidearm pitchers are iffy anyway. Gomes bat is better than Amaya’s right now but Counsell is doing everything in his power to get Amaya to take the job. Little? That’s ridiculous. Thompson is so inconsistent it’s concerning but he still has options. If he’s still that way when he’s out of them- fine.Madrigal plays 2 position and is valuable but brittle is my only beef with him but nobody in the Minors has stepped up to replace him. Brewer will probably be DFA’d soon enough when somebody comes back but until that happens he’s an arm right now in 26 in 27 day stretch. So no you’re wrong.

I said 7 or 8 guys that could be sent down OR DFA’d..

So how am I wrong considering 5 of those guys have already been back and forth this year? Amaya could be added to the list as well.

Sent down for who? The ones to call up are still struggling in AAA. They’ve tried everyone.

I’m not saying there’s solutions in AAA. My point is that their bullpen is full of AAA type pitchers and even a lot of their bench.

Botes salary absolutely does count against the CBT.

And Mastrobuoni and Thompson are the only two who the Cubs could/should/possibly expose to waivers.

I’ve read bad takes before but designated Little is one of the worst. Madrigal is a valuable bench piece and defensive replacement. Caus would be fine if used properly.

Caus would be lights out if he worked exclusively up in the zone, he gets in trouble because he doesn’t have the ability to run his sinker out of the zone.

Miller and Caus should only throw four seam fastballs up in the zone and sinkers out of it. Little should run his four seam above the zone and pound the bottom. Pitchers need to utilize their leverage to their advantage. Big tall pitchers with traditional deliveries need to work down, sidearm pitchers need to work up, let physics work in your favor.

Madrigal, Gomes and Little aren’t going anywhere. Someone may be traded, but I doubt anyone on that list will be dfa’d

Ryan, that’s not how DFA works—DFA and you mostly likely lose them AND have to replace them.

If you DFA or demote Amaya AND Gomes–do me a favor–scour all the other teams and tell me which catchers are available to just snag?

Do the same for Mastrobuoni, please? Madrigal?

They all have purpose.

It’s 100% OK to be frustrated with the way the bullpen has performed this season—BUT I am 100% certain that you would not have come up with the name Tyson Miller as a replacement to Mr. Lovelady before today.

The fact remains (pitching well or not) is that a lot of teams would covet the Cubs depth on their 40 man roster and the second that Gomes or Amaya get DFAd (they don’t have options) they would get swooped up by probably 25 out of the other 29 teams.

Lemme explain the word OR to you.. it separates two scenarios and indicates the choice of one or another.. so in this case, guys like Gomes could be DFA’d by the end of the year if they don’t start playing better… OR!!!! in the case of Mastrobouni, Brewer, Thompson, Cuas or Little, they could be sent down.

Crazy how the word OR works.

Jfc. It says COULD BE sent down or DFA’d, and wouldn’t be a big loss. It was a hypothetical statement. I’ve never had to explain such a simple sentence.

Amaya and Gomes would both be huge loses. Gomes is fantastic at game planning and is taking Amaya under his wing. Not sure if you noticed or not but the Cubs rotation happens to be fantastic and they were pretty good last season, a lot of that success is due to Yan Gomes.

Luck be a Lovelady tonight

' src=

A+ tier name, D tier reliever, and F tier person. Somehow he’ll try to blame the Royals for getting cut from the A’s too.

' src=

Good luck to dick lovelady

Bum A- We’re giving your roster spot to Bum B. Sorry. Not!

' src=

“Congrats, Mr. and Mrs. Lovelady, it’s a boy. Do you have a name in mind?”

“Dick. Final answer.”

' src=

Darn, I was hoping for “Maurice.”

Who speaks of the pompitus of love

Next Bud Light spokesperson?

' src=

He just loved the lady too much! Focus on baseball bro!

' src=

Finally, Hoyer get the lights -out reliever desperately needed since last year’s trade deadline! This is the move that puts us over the top, Cubs’ fans….. NOT!

' src=

The Cubs dicked him down

Look I’m not going to lose a whole bunch of sleep over this whole transaction. Slaughter was never going to be anything more than a decent utility player for the Cubs. He’s just blocked everywhere he plays. Lovelady was horrible, No big loss there. Miller will be DFA’d soon, Probably when Smyly comes back. The crap pitcher market revolves some more. It’s putting a Band Aid on a knife wound. Yeah it might slow the bleeding for a couple of minutes( At Best), But it’s really not solving anything at all. The real problem was the Cubs re-signed Hendricks in a year when they had hardly any room for error if they want to play the Luxury Tax game. The Bullpen was more of a need than a Starting P who can’t break glass. By the way that article on MLB.com that describes Hendricks 5 innings against the Pirates as a ” Gem”, Really didn’t watch the game.

I agree with you 100%

' src=

Somehow , I feel Getz on the Southside will be interested. He is a former Royal!!

' src=

I’m surprised none of his ancestors thought to change that last name and why did his parents add that unfortunate first name?

' src=

Because his parents are my age. We came home from class every day to watch Bart Simpson call Moe’s Tavern looking for Oliver Closehoff, Ben Dover, and Ivanna Mantekiss. We dreamed of the opportunity for clever and stupid names for the teacher to call out loud in class. We had to grow up with “Boy Named Sue” mentality, so did our future kids. Unfortunately, it backfired on us when our kids grew up softer and more sensitive, and now we have grandkids named Tyler, Skylar, Miler, Brayson, Grayson, and Maeve.

' src=

With a name like that, he was never cutout for Wrigley.

' src=

Talk about a Dick move from the Cubs.

' src=

I went straight to the comments and I am not disappointed.

'That was a big (expletive) win': Blue Jays survive clubhouse plague for extra-inning win

assignment is due tonight

BALTIMORE — John Schneider did not care about the calendar. Or that his Toronto Blue Jays simply improved to 19-22 with a tightrope-walk of a 3-2, 10-inning victory against the Baltimore Orioles .

With a vicious virus tearing through the clubhouse, just nine position players available, his starting pitcher still sweating out a fever in the morning and the American League's top team throwing their ace at him, Schneider was in no mood to downplay his club's triumph.

"That," he said Monday night at Camden Yards, "was a big (expletive) win."

Forget one day at a time, one of 162. The Blue Jays were in desperate need of some good karma, and they found it in the form of starting pitcher Jose Berríos, who pitched seven sterling innings after a breakfast buffet of electrolytes to flush his sytem of fever.

They found it in the form of center fielder Daulton Varsho, who hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning, four innings after robbing a home run on Ryan O'Hearn's drive over the center field wall at Camden Yards, and drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

And they found it in a whatever-it-takes mentality that saw two starting pitchers, Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman, prepared to enter the game as position players in case calamity struck.

With outfielders Kevin Kiermaier and George Springer and designated hitter Justin Turner still felled by the virus, and Schneider fighting it himself — his worst day was Saturday, he said — there was no wriggle room. Any margin for error vanished when catcher Danny Jansen came down with back spasms before the game.

Welcome to the no-man bench, which meant, among other things, 245-pound catcher Alejandro Kirk and 270-pound DH Daniel Vogelbach would get no courtesy runner.

"You don’t want to say May 13 is a huge game, but this was a huge (expletive) win," says Schneider. "We had nine guys. We obviously had no moves to make. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys that were out there tonight.

"I told them before the game, 'There’s no secrets here, boys — you’re not getting hit for, you’re not getting pinch-run for. Vogey, Kirkey, I hope you’re feeling fast.'

"Yeah, it’s May 13, but that’s a huge (expletive win)."

Perhaps Schneider is overdramatizing it just a bit, but hey, it's hard to blame him. The third-year manager has been looking for a foothold for his club — which lands somewhere between overmatched due to a blah off-season to underachieving on the early season spectrum — for weeks.

The signs of life peeked through the grass Monday. All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette — who came in batting .203 — rapped out three singles and drew a walk. Closer Jordan Romano — who began the year on the injured list with elbow inflammation — pitched a spotless ninth and stranded the ghost runner in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the win.

And Berríos gave up just a pair of Adley Rutschman solo homers and a harmless single in seven innings of work, the eighth time in nine starts he gave up two or fewer runs.

Berríos and Kirk exchanged text messages this morning, the burly catcher wondering if the emerging ace would make his post later that night. Shortly thereafter, the fever broke.

"Around 9:30, 10, I started sweating out the fever," says Berríos, who said he felt "pain everywhere."

"Then, I started feeling better and I said, ‘OK, now we can go out and compete. Now, we can go out there and do our thing.'"

Kirk did take a foul ball off the mask, but the Blue Jays mercifully stayed upright otherwise. They didn't need the services of Gausman or Bassitt, the former Ohio All-State point guard who now only has to worry about his day job — the starting assignment on Tuesday.

Perhaps the figurative virus that has gripped this club will break, too.

"I'm never going to win this game by myself," says Berríos. "We need everybody."

Even if everybody is just nine guys with no net.
