It is common for a speaker on stage to desire to control their own slide changes. Presentation Remotes or “clickers” can be a great solution for this. There are 3 main options for this: generic and cheap remotes, the production industry standard, and apps which can provide more flexibility and control.

Generic remotes: the Logitech R400, R800 and similar

Logitech makes a couple of very common models, and there are a ton of similar options on Amazon or the local office supply store. These work the way you’d expect: they have buttons to go forward/back, and maybe buttons to clear the screen, or a laser to point with. They generally use the same spectrum as WiFi, and have a range up to 100’ or so. They generally cost $20-$150 (the R400 is $70), and have a dongle that plugs into the computer over USB to receive the signal.

The downside is using the WiFi spectrum, so the range and reliability drops in WiFi-crowded areas, like office buildings with lots of Wifi routers. Some clickers do come with Bluetooth, which uses a different frequency spectrum, and could give better connection results depending on which class of Bluetooth device it is (Class 1 is over 100m, Class 3 is under 10m).

Pros: Easy to use, plug and play.

Cons: Can miss clicks or have complete dropouts in Wifi-crowded areas.

Gold standard: DSAN PerfectCue

DSAN makes the industry standard for presentation remotes in their PerfectCue system. It uses frequencies in the AM radio range, so there’s no conflicts with WiFi, and the transmitter range is more than 250’. The receiver can connect to 2 computers simultaneously, so a backup machine stays in sync. It also supports multiple systems in proximity to each other, if you’re doing a conference with multiple presentations in adjacent rooms. However there is one catch: the price tag starts around $350 and gets into the thousands pretty quickly.

Pros: It’s the best. Great range, great reliability, designed for mission-critical applications.

Cons: Cost. Starts at $350 and gets into the low thousands for more elaborate systems.

Modern option: ProRemote App

The ProPresenter Remote app is available on Android and iOS , and allows the presenter to control ProPresenter using the WiFi. It’s affordable, works well, and connects directly to ProPresenter. It also works on both tablets and smartphones and shows images of each of the slides, making it as simple as possible for speakers to control their own slides, especially if they bounce around a lot between slides.

Pros: Cheapest option, custom-built for ProPresenter, shows thumbnails of each slide, enables speakers to jump around easily.

Cons: Requires your mobile device to be connected to the same network as ProPresenter machine, and to be able to communicate. Bad WiFi, poor connectivity, and firewalls can block this.

Using a presentation clicker while giving your presentation is quite helpful in more ways than one. It not only allows you the convenience of moving around while delivering the presentation, but also allows you to completely focus on your presentation!

But, as you may have experienced, some presentation remotes don’t seem to work with Google Slides! That makes many of us wonder – “Do presentation clickers work with Google Slides at all?”

Most presentation clickers work with Google Slides. However, in some cases, you will need to install a free chrome extension called “Remote for Slides”. To download the extension, visit the chrome web store, search and add the extension. Once installed, you can click on the “Present with Remote” option.

In this article, I will guide you through the process of how you can set up your presentation clicker to work with Google Slides. I will also recommend some good clickers that I think you should check out and also teach you how you can use your smartphone as a presentation clicker as well.

Can You Use a Clicker Remote with Google slides?

Giving a presentation is quite common for most of us be it for a class or for work! If you happen to be someone who has to create and deliver presentations with Google slides every once in a while, then perhaps it’s time for you to learn more about a presentation clicker and how to make it work with Google Slides!

Interestingly, you can use a clicker remote to present the google slides. Most presentation clickers or remotes will work when you plugin their receiver into the USB slot of your computer.

However, make sure that you don’t lose the USB receiver as most remotes won’t work without it!

2. Beboncool RF Wireless Presenter [Most Budget Friendly]

The Beboncool is pretty budget-friendly and also has an integrated laser pointer. It is made out of unique ABS material which is environmentally friendly.

To use it, you do not have to install any software. Just plugin and it is ready for some action – which is quite helpful.

It has all the standard features available on the remote. It works with both Windows and Mac. Furthermore, it can also be used with PowerPoint and Keynote along with Google Slides.

The only drawback (if we can call it that) is that it doesn’t come with a battery. So, you really can’t just unbox and use it directly! But, for most people, that shouldn’t be a problem I suppose.

How to Use Your Phone as a Clicker with Google Slides?

If you don’t want to splurge on a clicker remote, then you can also use your phone as a clicker for Google slides! All you have to do is install a Google Chrome extension and you won’t have to pay any money for the clicker.

For Android

Below is the list of steps to give you a head start on how to use your phone as a clicker for Google Slides!

Step 1: Look for the “Remote for Slides” Extension

First thing first, you’ll have to install the Remote for Slides free chrome extension. Created by Google Developer Expert Henry Lim, this extension offers multiple features to help you ace your presentation.

Be it a forward or backward moving button, timer, or speaker note, this extension has it all! To install it all you have to do is launch the chrome browser and install the chrome extension.

Step 2: Add it to Chrome

If you are done installing the extension, now it’s time for you to add it to chrome. In your chrome browser, you’ll notice an add to chrome button. Click the add button in the confirmation box. After clicking the button if “Added to Chrome” appears, it means the extension is ready to use!

Step 3: Use it as a Remote

If you open your presentation using Google Slides you will notice the “Present with Remote” button on its top right. Wait till your presentation loads and use your phone as a clicker remote!

Now that you know the trick, start using the phone as a clicker remote in your next presentation!

Step 4: Open the Remote for Slides on your Phone

Once you click on “Present with Remote” option, Google Slides will enter in the presentation mode. You can open up the “Remote for Slides” pane, click on the link given using a browser of your phone. Then, enter the code and you will notice that your phone now converts into a presentation remote!

For iOS Devices

With Android out of our way, let’s find out how to use an iPhone as a clicker remote while giving presentations in Google Slides.

Step 1: Install the Google Slide app

Go to the apple store on your iPhone and install the Google Slide app. Once you are done with the install process, click the open button on your device.

Step 2: Sign-in

Now, it’s time to sign-in. Once you open the app, you will notice a sign-button at the bottom. Click it and sign-in to your Google account.

Step 3: Open the Presentation

After signing in to your Google account, click on the presentation you want to open. After it loads and opens on your device turn on the Apple TV using the Apple TV remote. After clicking the Apple TV on, swipe up on your screen and find the AirPlay Mirroring option.

Step 4: Bring the presentation on your screen

If you click on the AirPlay Mirroring option, a pop-up menu will appear. Now, select Apple TV to get your presentation on the screen. To make it full-screen click the right arrow on the menu and select “Present to external display”.

Step 5: Use thumbnails to move

After your presentation takes up the full screen, find the thumbnails right at the bottom and click to move your presentation. Once you are done presenting, turn off the AirPlay Mirroring.

And that’s all it takes to transform your iPhone into a remote clicker for Google Slides.

Roam freely while presenting. A pen can be a wireless remote control up to 30 feet away from your computer.

Got the right pen? Got Windows 10?

You need a digital pen, such as the Surface Pen 4 or the Wacom Bamboo Ink , that supports Bluetooth .

You need the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update installed on your computer.

Okay, now pair your pen and computer

On your digital pen, press and hold the top button for about seven seconds to turn it on.

Select Settings .

Select Devices .

Ensure that Bluetooth & Other Devices is selected on the left side.

A list of nearby Bluetooth devices is shown.

If you already see your digital pen in the list, marked as "Connected," then the pen is ready to use. Otherwise, continue with step 6.

Select Add Bluetooth or other device .

In the Add a device dialog box, choose Bluetooth .

This clicker has pretty much everything you would need. Along with the 60 foot range you have a nice ergonomic design, which fits into your hand comfortably.

The device will switch off to reserve battery when you’re not using it, which means you can keep the dongle plugged into your laptop or computer if you wish. It’s actually a little larger than it appears in the pictures online, but it is still quite light.

As wireless presentation remotes go, this one is very easy to set up and use. It works well with different operating systems, and there’s no need for you to install any presentation software either.

Using a presentation clicker in Anki SIMPLE

I have seen a lot of people inquire about the use of some sort of remote device to free up their hands while reviewing Anki cards. For people like myself who struggle to sit still, this alleviates having to hover over your keyboard with your hand on 3 keys. I picked up the Logitech R500 Laser Presentation Remote for cheap during the holiday season. In terms of initiating compatibility with Anki, I have seen several complex approaches that often utilize extra software and some background knowledge in coding (which for most of us science majors, goes over our head). The only basic understanding you need is the fact that clickers work by acting as right or left arrow keys. This clicker uses bluetooth so I dont have to deal with any computer connections with is nice.

After adding the add-on, open the add-ons window, double click on "customize keyboard shortcuts" to open the configuration window. Then I added "reviewer choice 1": "Qt.Key_Left" to reviewer_duplicates (duplicate because the original reviewer choice 1 is the number 1 key). DON'T FREAK OUT, I will post a picture of how it looks in the window (VERY SIMPLE, just copy what's in the window below). You can use Qt.Key_Left for reviewer choice 1 because reviewer choice 1 is always "bad/failed" card, whereas the "good" option fluctuates between option 2 and 3. For this, I changed

"reviewer flip card 3": "Qt.Key_Enter", to "reviewer flip card 3": "Qt.Key_Right",

This change reflects usage on a MAC, if using a PC, instead change the return option. This redundancy between enter for PC and return for MAC is nice as it allows us to utilize the other one for the right arrow. Let me know if you have questions or feedback.

Presentations are moving on, becoming more visual, animated, and interactive, but most of us are still stuck with using the same presentation remote that we’ve had for years. There are quite a few alternatives available now, so are any of them worth using over the standard clicker? We investigate to find the best presentation remotes.

There are many presentation remote options, but the most popular of the standard clickers is the Kensington Wireless Presenter . It’s small, simple, comfortable, and lets you go forward, backward, and blank the screen. It’s plug and play through USB, with no software to install. Two AAA batteries provide power, it has a range of 60 feet, and it works anywhere. Why would you need anything else?

Well, the best presentation remotes bring more to the table than simply advancing your slides. Interactivity is one reason you might want to switch. Air mice have been around for a while, but always remained fairly niche. They tend to look like normal computer mice, and work in the same way. However, when you pick them up, the cursor moves in line with your movement of the mouse in space – up, down, left, and right. Think of a Wii Remote, and you’ll get the idea. It means that now you can not only control the clicks in your presentation, but also control the cursor, opening up the ability to annotate on your slides using the pen function in PowerPoint show mode, or use hyperlinked or trigger menus to navigate around a slide deck, or open a webpage or another file. You aren’t constrained by the order of the slides, so you can make your story come to life, respond to your audience, and have a conversation with them – all in a pretty natural way without having to escape out of show mode, or pull up the thumbnail view (G key in PowerPoint 2013 and 2016) thanks to your presentation remote.

Gyration seems to be the leader in this category of presentation remote, with several models available. My preference was for their smallest mouse, the Gyration Wireless Air Mouse Mobile . It looks like a normal mouse and works pretty well. It’s plug and play, wireless, and uses a 2.4GHz radio antenna USB dongle to connect, so all pretty simple. It’s a decent enough mouse and comfortable on a table, but when you pick it up, it feels a little odd as the shape doesn’t fit in your hand in the way most people are used to, with things like TV remotes or phones, so it can take some getting used to. In its favour, rather than trying to awkwardly use the regular mouse buttons on top of the device, there is a trigger button underneath which you can click easily with your forefinger. It also positions your hand around the remote so it’s easier to move around and control your cursor. Given it’s dual purpose as a desktop mouse and a wireless presentation remote with cursor control, it’s pretty good. But, can you do more with the other options?

Smart TV remote

With the rise of Smart TVs and app-enabled media boxes, there have been a number of TV remote-style controllers released that are essentially air mice too. They don’t work as a desktop mouse, but they do control your mouse cursor and, as you move the remote around, the cursor moves as you direct it. They usually have quite a few function keys available, so you can not only go forwards, backwards, and blank the screen, but also control the volume of media, and even flip over the presentation remote for a full keyboard. The Wii Remote-style functionality that controls the cursor is somewhat easier to use and a little more intuitive than a traditional air mouse. The shape of these devices, the way you hold them in your hand, and the positioning of the buttons makes it feel pretty natural to move the remote around and control the cursor position. So it becomes very easy to navigate around your slide, and if you use hyperlinks or triggers , you can seamlessly move through your entire slide deck. This freedom of movement means that you can quickly respond to your audience and get to the content that’s useful.

As I mentioned, when you flip over these presentation remotes you get a full keyboard, so even if you’ve not put hyperlinks into your deck, you can use the number keys to type in the slide number you want and press enter to jump straight to that slide. Just print out a thumbnail view with numbers of all of your slides for a quick reference guide, and you’ll be moving through your presentation pretty seamlessly.

Another nice bonus about the keyboard is that it essentially gives you full control over your computer. If you want to bring up a new document and type in responses to questions, or show an Excel spreadsheet and update numbers, it’s pretty easy to do. You’re not going to do this in every presentation, but for some meetings it can be a useful ability making these types of devices some of the best presentation remotes.

There are quite a few options. The Aerb Mini Wireless Keyboard Mouse is about the size of a standard TV remote and has a lot of function buttons, but it’s mainly focused on TV controls. It’s comfortable enough, but a bit large and all of the buttons means that you’re more likely to press the wrong thing. The LYNEC C120 Mini Wireless Remote is smaller, narrower, and slimmer. The curved shape fits a little better in your hand, and it has just a couple of function controls that make it really easy to use as a presentation remote. It also uses a micro USB rechargeable battery, so a little more convenient than having to use AAA batteries. Both have decent sized keys, have a cursor lock so that you can reposition the mouse/cursor alignment, and disable the side that faces down when you flip over, so no accidental pressing of buttons on the reverse. They’re also about half the price of traditional presentation remotes and a third of the cost of normal air mice.

The form factor and added functionality mean that you should consider getting one of these instead of, or as a replacement for, a standard clicker.

Smartphone app

If you don’t want to buy something new, Smartphone apps are another option, giving you the ability to control your presentation on your phone through a Bluetooth or WiFi connection.

Microsoft has its own app called Office Remote, that allows you to control Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but with very limited functionality, so don’t get too excited about Word or Excel. In PowerPoint, you can go forwards and backwards through your slides, click by click, with haptic feedback each time, which is a nice touch. The app shows the current slide, on which you can trace a laser pointer that shows up on the main screen, although you’re probably better off interacting directly with your slide . You can see a thumbnail of the next slide which is neat and helps you to keep the flow but be aware of it becoming a distraction. You also get the speaker notes for your slides but be very careful you don’t just read them and present to your phone and not your audience. Otherwise, you don’t get a lot. Disappointingly, hyperlinks and triggers don’t work, so you can’t take advantage of interactive presentations. Although you can switch between presentations that are open on your computer, which could be useful.

Despite haptic feedback for ‘clicks’, the lack of physical buttons means that you end up spending too much time looking at your phone to check that you’re hitting the right area. The buttons on the screen are pretty large, but it takes some getting used to.

Connecting everything up is pretty easy. It requires a Bluetooth connection and a quick app install on your computer, which puts a new tab in the Office ribbon called Office Remote that has an on/off switch for the function. The Bluetooth connection is nice, as many of the other apps available work through a WiFi connection, which can be tricky if you can’t connect, although it does mean that the range can be pretty limited, so be wary of that if you’re in a large room.

The app gives you reasonable control, but compared with standard clickers or Smart TV Remotes, it’s not the best. Mainly because it’s awkward to hold your phone and click on the right areas of the screen without constantly looking down. The screen is always on so you can inadvertently press something mid-flow. Oh, and it only works for PowerPoint 2013 and PowerPoint 2016, and on Windows Phone and Android phones (Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony, HTC etc.), so if you’re an iPhone user with iOS then you’ll have to go for a third party app.

Update:  As of 2019 it looks like Office remote is only available with a Windows Phone.

Which is the best presentation remote?

It depends what you want to do, but the best balance of functionality, comfort, convenience, and cost probably makes the Smart TV Remotes the presentation remotes to choose.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

• Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
• Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
• Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
• Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

Low-stakes (or “formative”) assessments provide opportunities for students to practice, make mistakes, and get feedback on their learning without those mistakes greatly affecting their ultimate grade in the course.  Frequent, low-stakes assessments are more effective for long term retention than high-stakes (or “summative”) assessments (Roediger III, & Karpicke, 2006). Low-stakes assessments can be structured to help students prepare for high-stakes assessments, like exams or projects.

When deciding on what types of assessments to include in your course, think of low-stakes assessments as “keys” that help them to succeed on, or “unlock,” complex parts of high-stakes assessments, as described in the video and infographic below. Ask questions that will help you to adjust your instruction to suit the students’ real-time learning, like reviewing specific topics to clarify misunderstanings. Below are seven different types of classroom assessments that can be used in a wide range of courses.
