Canvas Rearranges Design Elements when Uploading
If you are a college student and you create a PPT on Mac and you save and then upload itt as an assignment on Canvas, a lot tof tthe design elements get moved around and it makes a mess of the presentaion. pics and texts boxes are no longer where you placed hem, so your design looks bad. What I have to do no is export the presentation to a PDF an dupload that as the assignment, and then email the instructor to tell them that Canvas is wrecking my presentaion so I sent a pdf instead. My college moved from Moodle to Canvas last year and I have had this trouble ever since. When the PPT presentation is saved as a PDF, you lose all the extras you added like voice narration and sound effects, music, notes, etc.
You're getting better but the product still has many frustrating parts. For instance the open folder is now gone on this version and on other versions I use with different customers, it's there and useful. The library of icons and art that you can use is also lacking. Why don't you allow all the types of icons that Visio uses? It would make it usable. Also, the section part is great but it's clumbsy and when you open you always have to collapse. Why can't you select a flag that lets you open collapsed. that would make the tool much more usable. Integration with teams is still terrible and with email if the product is open, you can't send the file. Why? just version it and send. Theres' much more but it's useful but not a product that has the power of things like Lucid, or visio, but it could be much more usable, so you get a three for teasing me with function and ideas, then falling short when I try to use it my way as the main unit. It's keeping this type of work, design and developent documentation, a dark art...who knows maybe AI might help you.
Printing Slides is a Joke
To my knowledge, this is mainly an issue with PowerPoint for Mac as my colleagues who use PCs don't have this issue. When you go to print the slides, they look fine if there are multiple on a page or if you print the notes version, but if you try to print 1 slide per page the images blur when printing! And not just a little fuzzy, they turn out with lines going through them and just look like they never completed loading. This also happens when exporting to a PDF. The PDF looks fine on the screen, and then as soon as you go to print it, a random image will blur out like that. Is it the same image everytime? NOPE! It picks and chooses which image it wants to blur out each time it prints. There is no rhyme or reason to this issue. I exported to PDF, Exported each slide to jpeg, even took screen shots as a last resort and had to just deal with the fact that the color was completely different on the printed screen shot slides. This has been an issue for MONTHS and is all over every forum - the fact that this hasn't been addressed by the MS team is unacceptable! If I'm printing client copies of proposal presentations it shouldn't take me all day due to troubleshooting!

What Is the Mac Version of PowerPoint?
While PowerPoint may be the most well-known program for making slides and creating presentations, it's far from the only one. Your Mac probably came with one of the alternatives pre-installed.
Apple makes a program called Keynote which is a direct competitor to PowerPoint. It offers all of the core features of PowerPoint—creating slides and presentations, animations, templates, presenter mode, etc. It integrates tightly with Apple's other software and services like iCloud.
Keynote comes pre-installed for free on all modern Macs. It's likely in your Applications folder as you read this. If it's not, and if your Mac and version of the macOS are compatible with it, you can download it for free from the Mac App Store by searching for "Keynote."
Need to make slides and want to avoid both PowerPoint and Keynote? There are many other PowerPoint alternatives , but one place to start is Google Slides , which is free, web-based, and integrates with your Google account and other Google productivity tools.
To print PowerPoint slides with Notes on a Mac, open your presentation and select Print . In the Print dialog box, select Show Details . In the Layout box, select Notes . Configure the rest of your printing options and select Print .
The easiest way to record a voiceover in PowerPoint on a Mac is to record by slide. Select the slide where you want to add the narration, then select Insert from the menu bar and click Audio > Record Audio . Enter a name for the narration, select Record , read your script, and select Stop when you're finished recording.
To convert PowerPoint to video on a Mac, open the presentation you want to save and select File > Export . In the export window, next to File Format , select a file format option, such as MP4 or MOV . Choose your video quality, choose whether you want to include narrations, adjust timing, and select Export .

Open PowerPoint, and you’ll be greeted with a range of templates to start your presentation. From here, you can add text, images, and animations to create an engaging slideshow. Once done, you can present directly from your Mac or save your presentation to share with others.
After you’ve completed your PowerPoint presentation on your Mac, you’ll have a professional and compelling visual aid to support your speech or lecture. You can also share it with others or export it into different formats such as PDF, video, or even a web page.
Introduction
Are you ready to impress your audience with a stunning presentation? If you’re a Mac user, fear not – using PowerPoint on your macOS is as smooth as on any Windows PC. Let’s be honest, presentations are a part of life: whether you’re a student, a professional, or just someone with a story to tell, at some point, you’re going to need to put some slides together. PowerPoint for Mac has all the tools you need to create a presentation that’s both visually captivating and content-rich.
Why is this important? Well, PowerPoint presentations are a staple in the professional world. They’re used for everything from business pitches to academic lectures. Whether you’re a newbie to presentations or a seasoned speaker looking to refine your skills, this guide will help you master PowerPoint on your Mac.
Step-by-Step Tutorial: Using PowerPoint on a Mac
Before jumping in, let’s clarify what you’ll achieve by following these steps. By the end, you’ll be able to create, edit, and present a PowerPoint slideshow on your Mac.
Step 1: Install PowerPoint
Install PowerPoint on your Mac from the App Store or through a Microsoft 365 subscription.
After installing PowerPoint, you’ll need to sign in with your Microsoft account to activate the software, then you’ll be ready to start creating your presentation.
Step 2: Open PowerPoint
Open PowerPoint and choose a template or open a blank presentation.
PowerPoint offers a variety of templates to suit different presentation styles. If you choose to start with a blank slate, you’ll have complete creative freedom.
Step 3: Add Content
Add slides and content such as text, images, and shapes to your presentation.
Remember to keep your slides simple and not clutter them with too much content. Visual aids should support your speech, not replace it.
Step 4: Customize Your Slides
Customize your slides’ design with themes, colors, and animations.
This step is where you can get creative with your presentation’s look and feel. Just be sure not to go overboard with animations – they should enhance your presentation, not distract from it.

Present your slideshow directly from your Mac or save it to share with others.
You can start your presentation by clicking the ‘Slide Show’ tab and then ‘Play from Start’. Make sure you practice your presentation beforehand to ensure everything runs smoothly.

PowerPoint: How to Add Audio to Powerpoint on Windows 10 and Mac
Last Updated Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 5:00 am
Known Issue (August 14, 2023):
Some Windows 11 users are experiencing issues with PowerPoint exports when they are turned into .mp4 files. Visuals within the exported PowerPoint are appearing as flipped, or upside down. We are working with Microsoft to find a solution.
As a workaround, please convert the file as a .WMV file option and save it in My Media. The following are directions on how to convert a PowerPoint Presentation with audio to a .WMV file . For more support or to help troubleshoot issues, please reach out to the LTS Help Desk at [email protected] .
Microsoft PowerPoint offers features to record audio narration and export it as a video. PowerPoint records audio slide-by-slide rather than in one continuous file, allowing creators to easily re-record a slide if they make a mistake or need to change something later. Exporting as a video and uploading to Kaltura or Canvas for streaming is advantageous since it standardizes file types, doesn't require a download to view, is in a format that can be captioned, and allows viewers to navigate more efficiently.
A recent update has made the process comparable on a Mac, but the specifics vary. Windows 10 instructions follow; Mac users can click the link below to jump to the appropriate instructions.
- Instructions for Mac users
Windows 10 Instructions:
The following instructions explain how to add audio to your PowerPoint presentation on Windows 10 and export that PowerPoint as an MP4. The text instructions cover the same information as the embedded video below.
NOTE: If you have an older version of PowerPoint, you may need to update it to access the features described below. If you do not have PowerPoint, you can download it and other Microsoft Office products for free by going to office365.uwec.edu. If you have questions about updating or installing PowerPoint, contact the LTS Help Desk at [email protected] or 715-836-5711.
- Design your PowerPoint TIP: Use images and limit text to better engage viewers/listeners.
- Click Record Slide Show NOTE: Audio may start recording automatically if you have an older version of PowerPoint. It will still work, but this version offers reduced functionality.
- Record narration and avoid reading text on the slide out loud to viewers. Click the blue Replay button to listen to the recorded audio and ensure it was recording.
- Press [Escape] or the ‘X’ button located in the top right of the screen when the audio recordings are finished. You will see a speaker icon on slides that have audio.
- Select Export (steps 10-14 are shown in screenshot below).
- Select Create a Video .
- Optional: Select Full HD (1080p) for the video quality; it is unlikely a higher quality is needed.
- Select Use Recorded Timings and Narrations.
- Follow prompt/pop-up window to save the video in a memorable location.
- How to upload and share with Kaltura (Instructors should use Kaltura. Students will need to use it if the file is over 500 MB, which a PowerPoint probably won't be and they can use Canvas.)
- How to upload and share in a Canvas assignment (students)
- How to upload and share in a Canvas discussion (students) - the instructions refer to the "rich content editor" which is just the features in the top of the discussion post reply.
Elaboration on the Recording Features:
- Timing Feature – there is a rolling time feature for the individual slide and the overall presentation. Allows the speaker/presenter to monitor how long they are talking.
- Microphone Feature - Click on Settings and select Microphone and then the specific device to set up before recording.
- Replay Feature - Use to check that the audio is recording properly before starting additional slides.
- Clear Feature - Select Clear to delete/re-record audio.
- Don’t set the camera to record - Make sure this button has a diagonal slash through it to avoid the problem.
Mac Instructions:
The following instructions will teach you how to add audio to your PowerPoint presentation on a Mac and export that PowerPoint as an MP4. The text instructions cover the same information as the video embedded below.
NOTE: It is essential to have the Office 365 version of PowerPoint or you will not be able to save your PowerPoint as a video. If necessary, you can download it and other Microsoft Office products for free by going to office365.uwec.edu. If you have questions about updating or installing PowerPoint, contact the LTS Help Desk at [email protected] or 715-836-5711.
- TIP: Use images and limit text to better engage viewers/listeners.
- Click Record Slide Show
- TIP: Before you begin recording your full presentation, do a practice recording to verify your microphone and other settings are correct.
- NOTE: Avoid reading the text written directly on the slide; use the slide to elaborate on the material being presented.
- Stop speaking for a second to prevent the audio from cutting out as slides change. Resume speaking when the time starts moving again under the Current slide timing feature to the left of the recording button.
- Click Stop or Pause at the top of the screen and then End Show in the top left corner when all the audio recordings have been finished.
- Check the audio by clicking on Play from Start under the Slide Show tab or the presenter mode icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Edit the name of the file and where you would like to save the video following PowerPoint's prompts.

Then if you are dealing with the file you created, follow the steps below:
- Click File on the upper left corner, then click Save as>Save a copy online.
- After opening OneDrive on portal, you can find the saved file in OneDrive.
- Click download to save the document on your Mac.

Save a presentation as a movie file or MP4
To run your presentation on computers that don't have PowerPoint installed, you can save your presentation as a video file.
MOV files can be played in any application that supports QuickTime movies. The MP4 format is an international standard, so it's supported more broadly, especially on hardware devices.
Save in a video format
Select File > Export .
(Don't use Save As , because it doesn't offer video options.)
Open the File Format list and select the video format that you want ( MP4 or MOV ).
If the MP4 and MOV options aren't in your version of PowerPoint, see Requirements below for more information.
Select the video Quality you want: Presentation Quality , Internet Quality , or Low Quality . The higher the video quality, the larger the file size.
If you have recorded timings and want to use them in the video you create from your presentation, make sure the box next to Use Recorded Timings and Narrations is checked. You can also choose to set the amount of time the video will spend on each slide if you don't have a set timing.
When you've made all your selections, choose Export .
Note: When you export your presentation as a video, any narrated audio that was recorded in Slide Show will play, but other embedded media files won't play.
After you've saved your presentation as a video, you can share it just as you would any other video, by using applications or devices that can open and play videos.
Requirements for saving in a video format
Limitations on presentations saved as movies.
When a presentation plays as a movie, each slide appears for a uniform amount of time unless you set individual timings, or record the slide show to establish timing for the entire presentation. For more information about setting slide timings, see Rehearse and set slide timings .
Several transitions play differently in a movie than they do in a presentation. Animation effects don't play in a movie at all.
Animate text and objects
Add, edit, or remove transitions
Record a slide show
Rehearse and set slide timings

Android file transfer: How to move data between your phone and computer
Moving files between your android device and a windows pc, mac, or chromebook doesn't have to be difficult — or dependent on any cloud services..
Your smartphone is a powerful computer in your pocket — and with Android, part of that PC-like muscle means being able to plug your phone into any Windows, Mac, or ChromeOS system and then drag and drop files either way.
Unlike iPhones, Android devices allow you to access their file systems directly from a desktop, without the need for any cumbersome interfaces or complicated procedures. In fact, transferring files to or from an Android device is basically no different than plugging an external hard drive into your computer and moving data to or from it.
All you need is your phone, your computer, and a cable to connect ’em — with micro-USB or USB-C on the phone side and USB-A or USB-C on the computer side, depending on the specifics of your devices. (Most current Android phones use USB-C, whereas most pre-2016 devices have the older micro-USB standard. USB-A, meanwhile, is the traditional connector port you’re used to seeing on computers, though more and more models now also offer USB-C .) There’s a decent chance that the same cable that connects your phone to its wall charger will work.
Got it? Good. Here’s what you need to do next, depending on whether you have a Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS system.
Android file transfers by operating system:
• for windows computers, • for macs, • for chromeos computers, • for any device: wireless transfers, android file transfers for windows computers.
With Windows, things are as simple as can be. Just plug your phone into any open USB port on the computer, then turn on your phone’s screen and unlock the device.
Swipe your finger down from the top of the screen, and you should see a notification about the current USB connection. At this point, it’ll probably tell you your phone is connected only for charging.
After you connect your phone to your computer, a notification will let you prepare it for transferring files.
Tap the notification and select “Transfer files” or “File transfer” in the menu that appears. If media files are all you’re planning to move, you could also use the “Transfer photos” (sometimes listed as “PTP”) option, which’ll treat your phone like a digital camera. Once you’ve made your selection, go to your desktop and open up a File Explorer window using the method that makes the most sense for your Windows configuration:
- Click the File Explorer icon in your taskbar
- Open the Start menu and click This PC or Computer
- Click the This PC, Computer, or My Computer icon on your desktop
Then look for an icon representing your phone alongside other portable devices and drives. Click or double-click that icon, and ta-da! You’re staring at your Android phone’s internal storage. You can now click around and browse folders, drag and drop files between your phone and PC, or manipulate the data in any way you want.
Your Android phone’s storage looks like any regular hard drive when viewed from a computer. (Click image to enlarge it.)
Android file transfers for Mac computers
Got a Mac? The Android file transfer process is a bit more complicated for you — but fear not, for it’s still pretty darn easy.
The main difference is that before things will work, you’ll need to download and install an official Google program called Android File Transfer . To use the program, your Mac must be running macOS 10.7 or later, and your Android device must have Android 3.0 or later — something that should hopefully be a given on both fronts at this point.
Once the program’s in place on your Mac, just plug your phone into your computer, turn on your phone’s screen and unlock the device, and then look for the same USB status notification described above.
Tap the notification and select “Transfer files” or “File transfer.” The Android File Transfer program should then automatically open on your Mac, and you should be able to browse your phone’s storage and transfer files to your heart’s content.
If the official Android File Transfer program doesn’t work well for you — a vexingly common complaint among Mac users these days — consider the favorably reviewed third-party Commander One Pro as an alternative. It costs $30 for a single license or $100 for a five-user team license.
Or — well, skip down to the final section of this story for one other option.
Android file transfers for ChromeOS computers
You’d expect file transfers between Android phones and Chromebooks to be as simple as can be, considering that Google’s the driving force behind both of those operating systems — and by golly, you’d be absolutely right.
Just like on a Windows system, all you’ve gotta do to connect your Android phone to a Chromebook is plug it into any open USB port, then tap the USB charging notification on the phone and select either “Transfer files” or “File transfer” from the prompt that appears — or select “Transfer photos” or “PTP” if you want your phone to be treated like a camera, with a focus exclusively on multimedia files.
Once you do that, the ChromeOS Files app should automatically appear on your Chromebook with your phone loaded as the active storage focus. You’ll find an option within the app’s menu (in the upper-right corner of the screen) to back up all of your phone’s media files to Google Drive, if you want to go down that road — or you can simply drag and drop files in either direction as needed.
Pulling up your Android phone’s storage on a Chromebook is easy as can be. (Click image to enlarge it.)
There’s really not much to it — nor should there be.
And if you want an even simpler way to take care of business…
Don’t like cables?
Hey, wait a minute — aren’t there apps and cloud services for this sort of thing? Sure there are, and we’ve got you covered there, too. Check out “ Transferring files wirelessly between devices ” in our in-depth guide to file management on Android for everything there is to know.
