Table 1 defines the minimum qualifications required for admission to full-time Ph. D. programmes at IIT Delhi. Please note:

These are Institute minimum requirements and any Department/Centre/School operating through their DRC/CRC/SRC can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.

This table includes most of the degrees, but each DRC/CRC/SRC is free to specify the qualifications and disciplines acceptable for admission to their programmes.

Candidates in the final year of their programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance until the preceding semester (preceding year if their programmes are year based) would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In any case, all admissions are provisional at first and it is confirmed only after all certificates and previous records are duly checked and verified, a process which may take a few weeks into the starting semester.

Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

Indian institute of technology madras, ph.d. programme.

The DoHSS has a vibrant research community. Ph.D. admissions are carried out twice a year, in January and July. The range of research topics encompasses fields as diverse as Advertising, Agricultural Policy, African/American/English/Indian Literature, Discourse Analysis, ELT, Economics & Econometrics, German Studies, Health Care, Modern Indian History, History of Science, Technology and Medicine, International Relations, Linguistics, Philosophy, Policy Studies, Science, Sociology, Theatre, Film and Media Studies, Technology and Development, and Science and Technology Education.

Research in HSS – the scholars’ perspective

As researchers from the Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences situated within the interstices of a technological institute, there is a constant dialogue between questions of technology with those of society and humanity. We as researchers keenly observe critique and act as an interface between these different paradigms. We believe that as a generation of curious Social Scientists and Liberal Humanists, the need of the hour is to establish consilience among diverse academic spaces. As a department, both the members of faculty and research scholars engage in a broad spectrum of research, which is largely interdisciplinary in nature. Being a part of a technological institute of national repute provides us with immense opportunities to witness and evaluate the interaction, transformation and synthesis that occur between technology, society and humanity.

The department of Humanities and Social Sciences, has scholars who pursue research activities in multiple fields including Language testing, Gandhian philosophy, Migration, Public Finance, Development Studies, Alternative education, Film Studies, Environmental evaluation, Sociopragmatics, Dalit and Minority education, European and Chinese studies, Speech and Communication, Ecocriticism, Deep Ecology, Health Economics, Diaspora and Cultural studies.

The department provides opportunities to scholars to work in areas outside of their specific discipline, thereby opening up avenues for innovative researches of interdisciplinary nature. The specially designed courses help the scholars to pursue their specific interests and decide on their research questions. This facilitates the study to evolve over a period of time and lays a sound foundation for the beginning of research. An evaluation of the scholar’s research progress at regular intervals not only facilitates his/her research but also prepares the scholar to engage with greater focus and rigour.

The scholars of the department have been awarded several reputed fellowships like The Fulbright Fellowship, The Erasmus Mundus Fellowship, The Jenesys Fellowship and have visited various countries, with opportunities to pursue research in world class Universities. The institute provides funds for research activities and extracurricular activities and several scholars have also availed these fellowships to attend international conferences during their program of study. The scholars have also published in reputed national and international journals.

The scholars of the department organize a weekly lecture series which serves as a meeting platform for both the faculty and the scholars. This forum allows scholars to share their research interests and outputs, both with members from within the department and also from other departments in the institute. The presentations are followed by discussions.

As a community the scholars also organize informal talks, film/book reviews, seminars and conferences including an annual theater production in collaboration with the post-graduate students of the department.

Being a research scholar in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences is both an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Research Scholars spend their work time producing novel research. They read about the latest advances in their area, propose and experiment with novel ideas, critically analyse their results, and publish and present their findings at highly selective international conferences and journals for peer-review and information dissemination. While doing so, they develop, under the apprenticeship of their faculty supervisors, skills for critical reading, ideation, experimental design, implementation, analysis, synthesis, writing, and communication. Many Research Scholars also help their faculty supervisors in informally guiding Master’s and Bachelor’s students on smaller projects, write proposals for research funding, and actively pursue collaborations with other research groups from around the world. PhD students are expected to take their own initiative and transition to become independent researchers over the course of time. To obtain a PhD, the Research Scholars have to publish their research in reputed journals and conferences, and produce a PhD thesis (dissertation).

PhD studies is also a time to develop a well-rounded personality by pursuing extra-curricular activities. Mumbai provides a cosmopolitan and metropolitan lifestyle, being the financial capital of India, with its experience of diverse cultures, cuisines, and industries. Most students can find accommodation in one of the hostels of the IIT Bombay campus. There are also studio apartments available for married students. The campus is well-equipped with numerous sports facilities and it has numerous student interest clubs.  .

The overall process for a successful Ph.D. includes completing the required coursework, qualifying, annual progress seminars, pre-synopsis, synopsis, provisional acceptance of the dissertation, dissertation defense, and final submission of the dissertation.

International students

Limited seats are available for international students to pursue a Ph.D. at IIT Bombay. More information for international students can be found below.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The award of Ph.D. degree is in recognition of high achievements, independent research and application of scientific knowledge to the solution of technical and scientific problems. Creative and productive inquiry is the basic concept underlying the research work. In order to overcome any deficiency in the breadth of fundamental training or proper foundation for advanced work, special preliminary or pre-doctoral courses are given by this department.

These courses are given either by faculty members or by guest-speakers and specialists in the profession.

Course requirements:

The requirement of pre-Ph.D. Course Credits/work for Ph.D. student having B.Tech. or equivalent degree will be 20 credits. In case the Ph.D. student having completed 20 credits is unable to complete the research at the Ph.D. level for any reason whatsoever, he/she be allowed to complete M.S.(Research) degree requirement.

M.Tech. or equivalent degree holders are required to complete a minimum of 6 credits. The department may require a larger number of credits in general or in specific cases. The course requirement will be determined by the Department Research Committee (DRC) on the recommendations of the supervisor after due consideration of the background of the student in relation to the proposed topic of research. These courses can be prescribed from existing M.Tech. courses, special pre-Ph.D. courses including laboratory, seminar, foreign language, etc. Normally, no independent study course will be allowed for Ph.D. students.

Full-time M.Tech. and M.S.(R) students of IIT Delhi interested in joining the Ph.D. programme within two years of completion of their M.Tech./M.S.(R) will be granted waiver of residency period. The course work requirements be made up by either additional credits (6 credits as per present norms) taken during their M.Tech./M.S.(R) period (over and above their minimum Degree requirements) or in the summer semester (first or second) by identifying courses. In all cases, such credit transfer be recommended by the concerned DRC as relevant to their Ph.D. programme. The minimum CGPA requirement for the course work is 7.50. If the CGPA at the end of any semester is above 7.00 but less than 7.50, he/she will be asked to take more courses in order to make up the required CGPA. If the SGPA at the end of the first semester and CGPA at the end of any subsequent semester is below 7.00, he/she will have to discontinue the doctoral programme. The course work must be completed within the first two semesters of joining the programme.

A student shall be formally registered/admitted to the candidacy of Ph. D. degree only after he/she has cleared the comprehensive examination. Students would be permitted to take the comprehensive examination only after they have submitted a research plan and have completed the course work (including compulsory audit course - HUL 810 Communication Skills). Full-time and part-time students must clear the comprehensive examination within a period of 18 months and 24 months, respectively, from the date of joining. A maximum of two chances will be given to any student to clear the comprehensive examination. Every student, after having completed the comprehensive examination must formally register for the candidacy on a form obtainable from the PG Section.

  • Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
  • Academic Programs

With a recent 10-year re-accreditation decision from the American Psychological Association , Illinois Tech’s Ph.D. in clinical psychology offers intensive training based on the Boulder Scientist/Practitioner model and cognitive-behavioral theoretical foundations. The program emphasizes a balance of clinical practice and the understanding and conduct of clinical psychological research, generally preparing you for licensure eligibility (although licensing requirements vary by jurisdiction). Practice experiences include exposure to diverse populations. A student’s training in practice and research begins in the first year and continues throughout their graduate career.

Clinical Psychology Program Statement Against Racism, Police Brutality, and Systematic Oppression Against Black People

Program Overview

Illinois Tech trains students from the cognitive-behavioral framework to be scientist-practitioners. You'll learn the scientific process of psychological research, and receive extensive clinical training to prepare you to become a clinical psychologist and thought leader in the field.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates typically work in universities, medical centers, and multidisciplinary clinical settings in the following roles:

  • Research/scholarship
  • Clinical practice
  • Supervision
  • Administration
  • Program Development

This program incorporates a series of substantive courses required by the American Psychological Association, in addition to research requirements, electives, and clinical training . Information on course requirements can be found in the  Graduate Bulletin .

Research training is an important aspect of your education. Here you will be educated in the scientific process of psychological research. Training begins in the first year working with faculty on their projects and continues through conducting your own research. This will prepare you to present posters and papers at conferences, which will provide valuable experience and professional contacts. Research activities are normally conducted with your adviser, but you may also work with other clinical and non-clinical faculty members. You also have flexibility to change your primary research mentor if your interests change during the course of training.

Clinical practicum experiences  will prepare you for work as a clinician and provide you with valuable contacts in the field. They also allow you to develop your clinical expertise by working in the community, reinforcing skills taught in the classroom. In addition,  an American Psychology Association (APA)-accredited internship  culminates your training as a practitioner. This year-long experience will facilitate the integration of your graduate training with valuable real-world experience. Optional participation on a variety of program committees provides an additional professional opportunity for students.

The clinical psychology doctoral program is also pleased to partner with our counseling and rehabilitation science faculty to offer a concentration in rehabilitation. This concentration includes APA-accredited clinical psychology doctoral training plus a unique emphasis for students who are interested in working with people across the lifespan affected by any injury or chronic condition that leads to disability.

Admission Requirements

Illinois Tech's Ph.D. in clinical psychology accepts applications for fall entrance only. Each year the program typically admits five to seven students.

The psychology faculty recruiting clinical psychology students to mentor in their research labs beginning fall 2024 include:

  • Dr. Nicole Ditchman
  • Dr. Steff Du Bois
  • Dr. Arryn Guy  (joining core clinical faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Fall 2024)
  • Dr. Alissa Haedt-Matt
  • Dr. Eun-Jeong Lee
  • Dr. Nicole Legate
  • Dr. Lindsay Sheehan

Please submit your online application as soon as possible. Your supplemental material cannot be entered into our database without a completed application. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by January 1, 2024 .

Requirements for admission to the program include:

  • Bachelor's degree with 18 hours of undergraduate psychology, including successful coursework in research methods or statistics
  • Completed online application, including payment of application fee
  • Professional statement of 1,000 words or fewer outlining academic and career goals, academic potential, and relevant research and/or applied experience
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, which referees will upload directly into the application system
  • Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions; transcripts must be uploaded directly into the application system. Please do not send them by mail.
  • A curriculum vitae (CV)

The clinical psychology Ph.D. program at Illinois Tech no longer requires students to submit general GRE scores.

Please do not submit any extra materials, including writing samples, thesis papers, books, etc.

The clinical psychology faculty will review all applications and then invite a portion of applicants for virtual interviews at a later date. Invited applicants will receive more information closer to the interviews.

Tuition and Student Funding

Tuition for the clinical psychology program at Illinois Tech is detailed on the Graduate School website on the  Graduate Costs and Aid  page.

Illinois Tech provides partial funding of Ph.D. students through a variety of mechanisms. Funding is typically arranged on a year-to-year basis.

Funding Opportunities

Incoming first-year clinical students have an opportunity to participate in a clinically relevant experience through Illinois Tech’s Center for Research and Service by testing children applying to the Chicago Public Schools Selective Enrollment Program. This is an assistantship opportunity with tuition assistance and compensation. There is an expectation of participation. After the first year, limited testing and supervising positions may be available with the center for students.

A limited number of departmental teaching assistantships are available each semester for graduate students. More advanced doctoral students (i.e., those who have completed the master’s degree) may have opportunities to teach undergraduate psychology courses as an adjunct instructor.

Individual faculty members may have research grants that fund student effort. Although not guaranteed, the Department of Psychology often offers funding opportunities to help cover costs of student research projects (e.g., recruitment expenditures, material costs, participant incentives).

Many clinical students work part-time in a clinical research setting for at least some of the time they are at Illinois Tech. Although not arranged by Illinois Tech, these positions are typically excellent psychology experiences (e.g., as research assistants or neuropsychology testing technicians) and are often passed down from Illinois Tech student to Illinois Tech student.

Although not guaranteed, the Department of Psychology often offers funds for student travel to conferences to facilitate the presentation of student-authored research.

Standing Program Committee Opportunities for Students

Committee work is an important component of a job description in most clinical psychology settings (e.g., university departments, clinical practices or hospital settings, and professional non-profits organizations such as the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies). For this reason, we highly encourage doctoral students to participate in several of the program’s standing committees.

Diversity Committee

The Diversity Committee promotes activities and program priorities that emphasize the integration of knowledge and practice related to respecting human diversity of all kinds, such as different ethnicities, cultures, nationalities, sexual orientations, genders, and religions (a non-exhaustive list).

Colloquium Committee

The Colloquium Committee organizes lectures and talks for students and faculty in the program to enhance professional development and education.

Social Committee

The Social Committee organizes activities in the service of promoting a sense of community and cohesion in the program.

Ad Hoc Technology Committee

The Technology Committee facilitates the web-based presence of the clinical psychology doctoral program and other technology-driven tasks.

Illinois Tech's Ph.D. in clinical psychology has been fully accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1982. For more information on APA accreditation, please visit  the  APA's accreditation website  or write to the address below.
