Cameron Highlands
Cameron Highlands , Malaysia
Cameron Highlands in Pahang is the biggest and arguably the best highland resort in Malaysia. Popular amongst both locals and tourists, it provides a cool respite from the sweltering heat of the lowlands. The sprawling lush valleys about the size Singapore has much to offer nature lovers. My family stayed 2 nights in Cameron Highlands and did a full day local tour of the beautiful countryside. We visited tea plantations , strawberry farms , Rose Valley , Lavender Garden , Bee and Butterfly farms, the Brinchang night market and more. Here are 10 places to visit or things to do in Cameron Highlands .
1. Tea Plantations
Visiting a tea plantation is the top thing to do in Cameron Highlands . We visited the Sungai Palas Boh Tea Plantation which offered an educational tour of the tea factory.
No visit to a tea plantation is complete without sipping a cup of tea while enjoying the view of the plantation. We had a lovely English-style breakfast with aromatic tea, scones and pastries at the Boh Tea Centre at Sungai Palas.
Here is a better view of the stunning vistas of rolling hills where the tea plantations are tendered. Did you know that Cameron Highlands got its name from a British surveyor called William Cameron back in the 1800s?
It is also worth exploring the scenery just outside the Boh Tea Centre .
There was another Boh Tea plantation in Cameron Highlands which was further away from other attractions and where you have to traverse a windy road to get there. Definitely not suitable for my kids who would throw up or get a headache. Apart from Boh Tea, there were two other tea plantations in Cameron Highlands – Cameron Valley and Bharat tea plantations . Both had tea cafés overlooking the plantation and stores to buy tea as souvenirs. I especially liked the strawberry tea from the Cameron Valley tea plantation , pictured below. Cameron Valley tea plantation was the easiest to get to, although the carpark was rather small.
2. Strawberry Farms
3. Rose Valley
Located at Kea Farm, a short distance from the Sungei Palas Tea Plantation , the Rose Valley is filled with more than 100 variety of roses and other types of flowers. The Rose Valley is perched on slopes along a small hill. Flower lovers would enjoy the Rose Valley .
4. Cameron Lavender Garden
More flowers bloomed at the Cameron Lavender Garden . As we entered the garden, we saw a sea of purple, red and yellow flowers sheltered under a large canopy.
On the higher slopes, there were rows and rows of gerberas in all sorts of colours. Visitors could also pick strawberries there.
5. Vegetable Farms
Our local day tour also brought us to visit the Watercress Valley , and a local vegetable farm that grew tomatoes and cauliflowers.
6. Bee and Butterfly Farms
Apart from flowers and vegetables, Cameron Highlands also has Bee Farms and the Butterfly Farms . See more pictures of the beautiful butterflies and bees here – Cameron Highlands Bee and Butterfly Farm .
7. Cameron Highlands Time Tunnel
The Cameron Highlands Time Tunnel is a local museum with lots of vintage items and memorabilia. At first, I didn’t think we would enjoy the Time Tunnel much, but to my surprise it was actually quite educational for the kids. My trio kept asking “What’s this?”, “How does it work?” or “Why?” There were also things that I haven’t seen for ages and have totally forgotten about them, like the old light switches. The Time Tunnel even had a photo of Singapore’s father and son PM,
8. Sunrise on Gunung Brinchang & Mossy Forest
Something really worth doing while in Cameron Highlands is waking up at around 4.30am, drive up to the top of Gunung Brinchang , climb up a watch tower with the cool crisp wind blowing at your face, and wait patiently while the sun reveals itself and the spectacular scenery. Read more .
9. Brinchang Night Market (Pasar Malam)
We went to the Brinchang night market (locally known as “Pasar malam”) near Star Regency Hotel. It normally opens on Fridays and Saturdays but during Malaysian school holidays, it opens every night. Local produce like strawberries, vegetables, and fruits were sold in abundance at the night market. There were also many stores selling vegetable fritters, crab fritters and prawn fritters. One thing to try was the corn with the white kernels. The white corns could be eaten raw and surprisingly, it was sweet! Apart from food, there were lots of value-for-money stuff and souvenirs on sale. If you are driving, you need to go there early to find parking.
10. Enjoy the local delights
Apart from the food at the Brinchang night market , steamboat restaurants seem to be quite a hit in Cameron Highlands . We only ate at the steamboat restaurant once, though. Most of the time, we ate the local food fare there. Our favourite was Nolina food. The food was cheap and good. Try the blue nasi lemak with sambal chicken. Nolina Food was just 5 minutes from Copthorne Hotel at the bend towards the direction of Ipoh.
Tips on visiting Cameron Highlands
- If you are coming from the North-South highway, drive up from Ipoh instead of from Tapah. The road from Ipoh is less windy than the one from Tapah.
- Don’t plan on visiting the Sungai Palas Tea Plantation on Monday because they are closed.
- Do consider joining local tours, especially to the Boh tea plantations and Gunung Brinchang, if you are not comfortable driving or if you don’t want to risk damaging your car. The road was too narrow for bi-directional traffic. Other attractions were easier to drive to. I joined the local tour CS Travel and Tours which I booked from the Hotel travel desk www.cstravel.com.my .
- Don’t plan on going strawberry picking in the afternoon, especially after other tour buses have come and gone. There won’t be much red and juicy strawberries to pick. Try going for one which only opens on certain days a week (e.g. Thursday-Sunday). Go on the first day and first hour of the opening to get the best pick of strawberries. I went to the one just outside Copthorne Hotel on Thursday morning when they just opened for the day and got the best pick of plump and juicy strawberries.
- Copthorne Hotel (formerly known as Equatorial Hotel) – It has 2 and 3 bedrooms with terrific view of the sunrise
- Strawberry Park Resort – It has family suites for up to 6 guests
- Other Cameron Highlands accommodations
We also went to enjoy the hot springs at the Lost World of Tambun, Ipoh, Malaysia before going to Cameron Highlands.

I really miss the cool weather of Cameron and having tea and scones at the Sungai Palas Tea House
Did you guys join a local tour or hired a driver for the day to cover all these places?
If its a local tour, what is the name of the travel agency?
Hi HJ, We joined a local agricultural tour which we booked through the Hotel Travel Desk. The tour company is called CS Travel and Tours and their website is http://www.cstravel.com.my . They have different types of tours around Cameron Highlands, with some more adventurous than others.
Thanks for the wonderful tips!
1. May I know did you join a full or half day tour with CS Travel and Tours?
2. If it’s half day, what time did it start and end?
3. Do they pick you up from your hotel? If yes, which hotel? Or is there a specific meeting place you have to be at?
I’m planning to visit Cameron Highlands later this year, trying to see if I can join a local half day tour in the morning. Thanks for your help!
Hi Cheryl, I booked two back-to-back half-day tours with CS Travel with our own lunch in between. The morning tour starts at around 8.30am and ends around 12-1pm. the afternoon tour starts at 2.00pm. The tour guide picked us up from our hotel. At that time the hotel was known as Equatorial Hotel, now it is called Copthorne Hotel.
May I know does the Pasar Malam in Cameron Highland open on Sunday also ? This is our first time to visit Cameron and we want to avoid the crowd during weekend and school holiday. Does Sunday too crowded and does road will have heavy traffic jam ?
We plan to visit on 28-Jun-15(Sun) to 30-Jun-15(Tue) and we around 18 ppl (13 adults and 5 small kids). Is there any recommended apartment or homestay or resort for such a big family ?
Hi Marcus. The Pasar malam only opens on Fridays and Saturdays. There are accommodations for 13 people, however, now they are already booked. You can find accommodate your group in two 3-bedroom apartments. Check out the available listings here – Cameron Highlands.
Hi! I have read the comments and also checked the CS Travel and Tours website. May I ask if a half day tour would be enough? Our stay is limited for one day and we want to go back to Kuala Lumpur by evening. Could you help us suggest alternatives if there is any? Thank you so much!
Hi Myka, The tours are mostly half days. The most popular one is the one that goes to the tea plantation. I would choose that if you can only spare half a day.
This is my first time travelling to Cameron Highland via Singapore. How do you move around from the hotel to night market and different attractions? Is there taxi services? I look through Google map and I think the places are far from Copthorne Hotel. Please advise. Many Thanks!
Hi Alex, we joined a local tour to bring us around the attractions, including the night market. Within walking distance of Copthorne Hotel, there is a strawberry farm and also a number of shops.
Thank you very much for your updates! How about walking from Copthorne Hotel to the night market at the shopping areas at Tanah Raja? Is it walking distance? Many Thanks!
Hi Lex, Copthorne Hotel is in Brinchang, whereas Tanah Rata is another area about 20 minutes away by car. It is too far to walk. However, if you are referring to the Brinchang town, it is possible to walk, but if I recall, it may be up the hill.
How do you get to Cameron Highland from Singapore? By driving a car or taking a coach? Many thanks.
Hi Timothy, we drove, but not directly from Singapore. We stayed at Ipoh’s Lost World of Tambun before driving up to Cameron Highlands. On the way back, we stayed in Malacca before driving back to Singapore.
Nice write-up and great pictures! I wrote about some beautiful places in Cameron where you can take awesome pictures. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments. 😀 Best Places To Take Pictures In Cameron Highlands Take care and cheers!
hi, any suggestions for car rentals from Ipoh? we are coming from SIN-IPOH. from there how to go to IPOH. any idea?
Hi, you might want to try online car rental companies or Expedia which will search through several car rental companies for you. The link to Expedia is to the right or bottom of this page.

One day trip to cameron highlands in malaysia.
Cameron Highlands is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Malaysia . Cameron Highlands is 1500 meters above the sea level, and the temperature is low throughout the year. The largest 274.97 sq mi scenic hill station is located in Pahang and worth to visit for all. I loved my one day trip to Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur. I was surprised to explore many farms to lush green tea plantations all around Cameron Highlands.
Cameron Highlands is almost 300 km away from Kuala Lumpur. It takes 3 hours to reach the Highlands by road. I made a group tour with IVY Holidays and arranged by Hotel Sentral Pudu. At early morning we started our journey and took the Tapah route to reach Cameron Highlands. All together it was almost 12-13 hours long day trip and cost me 350 RM.
The route is scenic and loved the mountainous sunrise view from the taxi window. On the way had breakfast from Pak Tam with Nasi Lemak and Lemon Honey juice. The whole trip was interesting. Details inside.

Many lush tea plantations are the main attractions of Cameron Highlands. The cool temperature of Cameron Highlands is also perfect to grow many vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Ringlet is the main agricultural hub of this hill station. Tanah Rata is the main and popular town in the Cameron Highlands and best for budget hotels and restaurants. Another popular town among tourists is Brinchang for good food and shopping.
When To Visit
As the weather is cooler, so the popularity of Cameron Highlands is high always among tourists. The average temperature is 18 °C and dropped at night. To avoid more tourists better not to visit in the peak season. During weekends students visited more for educational tours. Mainly locals do visit Cameron Highlands during local holidays. If you want to escape from too cold, then visit during summer time (June-July). I visited in August, found a few tourists and the weather was fine enough.
How To Reach
A road trip by car is the best way to explore Cameron Highlands. Either you can take the west (Tapah/Ipoh) or east (Gua Musang/Kuala Lipis) route to reach Cameron Highlands. Public transport service by bus is also standard. Buses stopped in almost all towns of Cameron Highlands. The rental taxi service is also not a bad idea to take. It depends on your choice and interest.
Top Things To Do & See
Lata Iskandar Waterfall
Visit Scenic Tea Plantation
Some of the popular tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands are BOH Tea Plantation, Cameron Valley Tea Plantation, Sungai Palas Tea Plantation, and Bharat Tea plantation. I visited BOH Tea Plantation. BOH is a famous tea brand in Malaysia and established in 1929. This oldest tea garden and tea centre was worth to visit for many reasons.
The main attraction of BOH Tea Estate is the BOH View Point. The beauty of BOH plantation and blue mountains is simply breathtaking from 4787 feet above the sea level. You’ll enjoy a short trek to reach the view point. Then you can visit the tea center to see the whole tea processing of BOH Tea Plantation. There is one nice tea outlet to purchase BOH tea products.
And one cup of fresh BOH tea is must drink from BOH Restaurant. BOH Heritage Tea Centre is closed on Monday and the opening hour is 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Pick Your Own Strawberries
Cameron Highlands is the main hub to grow and harvest strawberries in Malaysia. There are many strawberry farms and open for all visitors to visit and buy fresh strawberries. Many farms offer to pick your own strawberries and sell different strawberry food products. After tea plantations, strawberry farms are the main attractions for tourists in the Cameron Highlands.
I visited Raaju’s Hill Strawberry Farm and enjoyed to taste fresh strawberries. Some other popular strawberry farms are Healthy Strawberry Farm, Big Red Strawberry Farm, and Kasimani’s Strawberry Farm. April to June is the best time to visit strawberry farms in the Cameron Highlands.
Pick & Buy Cactuses
First time preferred to give more love over flowers to cactuses. It was worth to visit Cactus Point Cactus Farm in the Cameron Highlands. There are huge collections of many cactuses here. I had no idea about colorful cactuses and they look like flowers only. You can pick and buy cactuses from this farm.
Enjoy A Walk at Rose Valley
There are few rose collections at Rose Valley. The admission fee is 5 RM per person. Rose Valley is like a garden and not that worth besides enjoying some moments and walking through the walkway. But remember not to pick any flower by mistake.
Have Good Lunch From Tanah Rata
There are many Asian restaurants particularly Indian restaurants at Tanah Rata. I had a quick lunch with Arab Salad and French Fries from Cameron aa Curry House Restaurant. This particular spot beside this restaurant is perfect for hangouts, less crowded and you can have good food at a reasonable price.
Besides, there are Bee Farm, Kea Farm, and Butterfly Farm to visit in the Cameron Highlands.
However, for staying some days in the Cameron Highlands, you should book hotels before a tour. Mostly in the peak season, all hotels are booked very fast, and the price became high.
Undoubtedly Cameron Highlands is one of the scenic holiday destinations in Malaysia. A delightful and pleasant hill station to lose you in nature.

Cameron Highlands Itinerary – How To Make The Most Of Your Trip
What should you know before planning a trip to Cameron Highlands?
Whether you’ve only got one day or 3 days to spare, having an itinerary to fall on will benefit you in more ways than one. Take it from us as we’ve been to Cameron Highlands countless times.
Read this post if you want to know when to go, how to go and where to stay. As well as how long to stay! And it doesn’t hurt to have some handy travel tips in your arsenal before you go.
Main Highlights Of Visiting Cameron Highlands
When you’re in Cameron Highlands, there’s no need to rush from one attraction to the next!
The point of it all is to take your time and appreciate the natural beauty around you!
- Visit a Cameron Highlands tea plantation
- Pick strawberries at a strawberry farm
- Stroll through Lavender Garden (we do prefer the newer attractions like Agro Market over this one)
- Visit a local market like Brinchang Night Market or Kea Farm Market
- Admire how big flowers get in a rose garden
- See plenty of cacti – maybe buy a couple
- Enjoy British cream tea at a colonial-style tea house
- Do some hiking (e.g. mossy forest, Gunung Brinchang, Robinson Falls, Gunung Jasar etc)
- Have a steamboat meal
And if you run out of things to do in Cameron Highlands , don’t fret! There’s more that we did not cover in this post!
Our Suggested Cameron Highlands Itineraries
Unless you plan to do some serious hiking or visit Brinchang Night Market :
You can cover most of the main highlights in Cameron Highlands in one day! Provided that the weather behaves, and that traffic is not too crazy.
The peak time for most attractions seems to be 10am to 12pm. At the same time, you should avoid passing back and forth through Kea Farm to save yourself the trouble of getting through the traffic again.
It really pays to plan your route carefully before starting on your journey. Check Waze too before you begin your journey. You never know when a tree or landslide is holding up the traffic!
Classic Itinerary (Great For Families Too)
This is a classic itinerary for first timers to Cameron Highlands! The order in which you see these attractions depends on your priority and how much you detest being stuck in traffic.
This itinerary assumes that you are making a day trip from Ipoh.
- Have an early morning local breakfast at a kopitiam or dim sum restaurant in Ipoh
- Head up to Cameron Highlands ( ~2 hours with light traffic)
- Stretch your legs at Sungai Palas BOH tea plantation (closed on Mondays) – we recommend having brunch here – their nasi lemak is good.
- Stop by the Kea Farm Market ; Visit the Sheep Sanctuary if you don’t see a long queue at the ticket counter
- Visit Agro Market (you can replace this with Lavender Garden, but we think Agro Market is better)
- Lunch at Delicious & Happiness Kitchen 有口福美味小厨
- Pick some strawberries at Big Red Strawberry Farm
- Have scones, tea, and cake at Cado Cafe
- See large specimens of cacti at Cactus Valley
- Check out the Brinchang Night Market – usually only open on Friday or Saturday evenings

Essay_an education trip to cameron highlands.
These are three essays I copied from other websites for your reference.
An Educational Trip to Cameron Highlands
On 21 June 2010, the Geographical Society of our school made an educational trip to Cameron Highlands. Thirty students/ members of the society accompanied by four teachers went on the trip. We set off at 6.30 am by coach and reached there at 9.00 am sharp.
The main purpose of the trip was to enable the members of the society to study nature and build better rapport among them. In addition, the students would be able to gain first hand knowledge on what they have learned in their Geography lessons. This would enable them to understand their lessons better.
The weather there was cool and refreshing. All the way up the hill, we saw beautiful lush greenery on the hill slopes. Our first stop was at a huge rose garden, probably one of the best in our country. Many varieties of roses were planted there. It was a fascinating sight to see shades of red, pink, yellow and orange roses swaying gently the breeze! There, we observed the workers working in the farm. Some were aerating the soil; while others were watering and trimming the plants.
After the rose garden, we visited a large tea plantation. There we saw vast areas of green tea shrubs growing on the hill slopes. The scenery was beautiful and refreshing! We witnessed women workers plucking young tea leaves with their nimble fingers, throwing them into the baskets strapped on their backs.
At 6.00 p.m. we headed home. We found the trip educational and beneficial. The members saw for themselves highland features such as hills and waterfalls and the co-relation between the cool climate and the economic activities.
