Barbara Caras Memorial Scholarship for Film Students

The scholarship is open to students in Sarasota or Manatee County, Florida who have completed at least one full year at an accredited Florida College and are majoring in Film, Computer Animation, Creative Writing, Motion Design, or Illustration. Austin Peay State University Creative Writing Scholarships

The California Scholarship Federation is a program run for California middle and high school students all across the state. There are around 1,500 chapters in California run through individual schools. Unlike the other scholarships listed above, students must be nominated by their chapter staff adviser in order to be considered for awards. 

The two main awards offered through CSF are the: 

• $2,000 Seymour Award, given to 50 students annually - expires February 18
• $1,000 Michelson Award - expires December 22

The California Student Aid Commission offers several grant opportunities for California students pursuing higher education. A few of them are outlined below.  

The Cal Grants, similar to federal Pell Grants , are scholarships awarded to California students pursuing undergraduate and vocational degrees in-state that do not need to be repaid.

Chafee Grant for Foster Youth

The Chafee Grant program is available to any applicant who is or was in foster care between the ages of 16-18. Applicants may qualify for $5,000 a year for career and technical training.

Save on college tuition with the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

California is one of the 16 member states and territories (including Arizona , Colorado, Washington, and many others!) that participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange, which is a program designed to provide “steep nonresident tuition savings for Western students”. Over 160 colleges and universities across the 16 member states participate in WUE, providing Western students with many options for pursuing higher education outside of their home state while still being able to save money.

From there, students will need to complete and submit the scholarship application online. Students will need to submit a letter of recommendation, an unofficial transcript, a copy of their FAFSA report and SAI estimator.

4) Krishnan-Shah Family Scholarship

Amount Awarded : Up to $10,000

Eligibility : Students must be a graduating high school senior residing in the Silicon Valley Region. For example, the counties of Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, and Santa Cruz.

Additionally, students must be first-generation college students planning to enroll as a full-time student in a four-year college or university. Students must demonstrate extracurricular involvement and financial need. As well, students must have a maximum GPA of 3.75.

5) Hazel Reed Baumeister Scholarship

Eligibility : Students must be of African or African-American descent. Additionally, students must reside in the counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, San Francisco, or Alameda.

On a 4.0 GPA scale, students must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher and plan to enroll as a full-time student in a community college, vocational school, or four-year institution.

Application Process : Submission forms will be collected through an online portal that utilizes a Gmail account. Students must respond to an essay question, which can vary from year in year. These essays should be no more than 2 pages. In addition, students must provide two letters of recommendation and a high school transcript.

8) San Diego Chinese Women’s Association Scholarships

Amount Awarded : $1,500 (Students planning to attend a four-year university); $1,000 (Students attending community college or vocational program)

Eligibility : Students can be male or female students of at least one-quarter Chinese descent. These scholarships are open to students attending high school in San Diego County.

All students, regardless of their institution post-graduation, must demonstrate a GPA of at least 2.5.

Application Process : To apply, students will complete an online application form. Materials needed include a list of extracurriculars, a letter of recommendation, and an official high school transcript. Additionally, students will complete an essay on an assigned topic.

Eligibility : Most (but not all) of these scholarships are reserved for Jewish high school students. While eligibility varies by award, most of the scholarships look for students who demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. California provides an array of great colleges and universities with three main public segments that include the prestigious University of California, California State University, and California Community Colleges. It is a private institution located in Pasadena, California, and has a tuition fee of around $63,255 which is slightly higher than Stanford. Its acceptance rate is also lower being at 3%. The highest percentage of students are enrolled in Computer and Information Sciences majors and Engineering related majors. The student enrolment per semester is lower, around 1000, due to the low acceptance rate.

The University of California campus in Berkeley is a public institution and is ranked #15 among the top National Universities in the States. Being a public university, its tuition cost is much lower being around $15,891 per year for in-state students. For out-of-state students, the tuition costs are around $48,465 per year. The acceptance rate is also higher at 11% and around 32,831 undergraduate enrolments. The room and board, however, costs more than the other two universities mentioned being at around $22,402 in the year 2023-24. California State University East Bay is one of the public universities in California that accept applicants with a GPA that is around 3. Its average acceptance GPA is 3.2 and the admission approval chance is around 74%.

The Fresno Campus of California State University also has more lenient admission requirements. It not only accepts an average GPA of around 3.0 but also has a lower SAT score requirement starting at 890. Due to this, the acceptance rate of the university is also above 90%.

Life Pacific College is another option for students looking for a 4-year degree-granting institution that accepts students with 3.0 or slightly lower GPAs. It is a private institution located in San Dimas, California with a more than 90% acceptance rate. However, being a private institution, its average tuition per year is higher than public institutions. Currently, their tuition and fees are a little more than 20,000 per year.

You will need to already be enrolled in a qualifying major to be able to receive the scholarship, as well as have completed 18 units when you apply.

25. Louise Snyder Scholarship for Re-Entry Women

Are you returning to study after having left your studies hanging? Are you a California resident? The Louise Snyder Scholarship of $500 is intended for women who have decided to continue their studies and have re-entered the education system. You must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA and be between the ages of 25-55 to qualify.

26. Lois Olsen Memorial Scholarship

The Lois Olsen Memorial Scholarship of $250 is for any Fortuna High School female athlete who has maintained a minimum GPA of 2.75 or more and who is going to study a two to four year degree and shows a need for financial aid.

27. Wilson Wade Memorial Scholarships

This scholarship varies in the amount awarded to the student. If you are a female student in the state of California, are graduating from high school soon, have had a GPA of 3.0 or more, and are planning on attending school for a four year college degree starting in the following autumn, and are a California resident, you may qualify for this scholarship. You must submit an essay stating your goals and scholastic achievements, as well as information on your background and prove a financial need for studying. Submitted paperwork should also include a FAFSA financial aid application, SAT scores, and proof of the last income tax return filed by parents.

28. Women Health Care Executives

This $5,000 scholarship is designated for women who are graduate level students dedicated to their studies in public policy and public health and who have shown great potential in becoming leaders in the health care community. It is provided by the Women Health Care Executives.

29. M. R. Bauer Foundation Continuing Nursing Studies Scholarship

If you are a resident of Los Angeles County and you are looking into continuing your nursing studies, the M. R. Bauer Foundation Continuing Nursing Studies Scholarship may be able to award you an amount of $500-$2,000 towards your studies.

30. SFSB Fleischman & Floro Awards Scholarship

If you have shown remarkable progress in your academic achievements, you could very well qualify for this valuable scholarship of $1,000-$5,000 towards your studies. Financial need is not critical to be eligible for this scholarship, but you do need to be a resident of Santa Maria, Orcutt, Guadalupe, and Los Alamos. You need to have taken the SAT or ACT and also have maintained a GPA of at least 3.0. You also have to have had studied at a Santa Barbara school from grades 7-12.

31. Telacu Scholarship Program

Are you a student in high school or college who could really use some financial help to further your studies? The Telacu Scholarship Program may be just what you need. The program offers a variety of means of assistance from mentoring to leadership activities and more and is available to students in California and elsewhere. If you can prove that you have a financial need, you can be eligible to receive scholarship money towards your studies.

32. Latin American Professional Women’s Association Scholarship

As a Hispanic female student, you could very well be able to qualify for the Latin American Professional Women’s Association Scholarship. If you have been out of high school for around 5 years, are above the age of 23 years old, and are a non-traditional student, as well as a Los Angeles resident, you can apply to receive the $500 scholarship.

33. Louis Armstrong Jazz Scholarship Honoring Duke Ellington

If you are an undergraduate studying at the University of California and are studying jazz composition, this scholarship is specifically for you. While scholarship amounts vary according to students and their financial needs, you may very well be eligible for a fair award towards your tuition.

34. Ray Dale Memorial Scholarship

The Ray Dale Memorial Scholarship is designed to help students who are enrolled in Physician Assistants Programs. The student who wishes to receive the one-time $1,000 scholarship must show good standing with the California Academy of Physicians.

35. Joseph T. Desilva Scholarships

​If you are a child of members of UFCW Local 770 or a spouse or parent, you may be eligible for the Joseph T. Desilva Scholarships. In order to receive this scholarship, you must be a student enrolled at the University of California, and do well on your essay, GPA, interview, and show interest and involvement in your community and extracurricular activities. Those who receive the scholarship can expect $20,000 in funds towards their education.

Incoming and current college students who are at least 18 years of age and have a minimum GPA of 2.8 are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must be currently or planning to be enrolled in school majoring in a healthcare or education-related field. Applicants must submit a 500- to 750-word essay describing what motivates them in their career aspirations, and why they want to pursue or are currently studying for a healthcare or education-related degree.

Junior College/Trade School Scholarship // WTS

This scholarship awards community, technical, or trade college scholarships to women pursuing transportation-related study at community and trade colleges.

Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship // WTS

Amount: $5,000

This scholarship is available to women pursuing undergraduate studies in transportation or a related field. 

Innovation in Education Scholarship // LA Tutors

Deadline: Monthly; the 20th of each month

This monthly scholarship is open to high school or college students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and are tasked with designing a project that makes a difference in their community. Must “submit an essay describing the goal of the particular project and provide supporting documentation.” No minimum or maximum word or page count.

Rodeo Enthusiast Scholarship // Rodeo Ticket

Deadline: August 15, 2024

This scholarship is available to students who either grew up going to rodeos or went to one for the first time as an adult. Applicants must write a 700-1,500 word essay about the experience. Must include a photo of yourself with your essay submission. Scholarship available to students in all 50 states.

C.I.P. Scholarship //  College is Power

Amount:  $1,000

Deadline: August 31, 2024

Students ages 17 years or older who plan to start a program of higher education within the next 12 months or who are currently enrolled in a program of higher education are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must be citizens or residents of the U.S. and write a 150-word statement answering the following prompt: "What is your primary goal for going to school?"

Beauty and Wellness Professionals Scholarship // Beauty Schools Directory

Deadline: September 1, 2024

This scholarship is available to high school seniors and college students who are currently studying or planning to study at a beauty or cosmetology school. Both part-time and full-time students are eligible. All U.S. residents and DACA recipients are eligible to apply.

Cameron Impact Scholarship //  Bryan Cameron Education Foundation

Amount: Four-year, full tuition scholarship (actual dollar amount varies based upon school selection)

Deadline:  September 5, 2024

Applicants must be high school seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. Must "show proven excellence in extracurricular activities, be motivated leaders with a strong work ethic, demonstrate active participation in community service and/or civic minded arenas." Must submit two letters of recommendation. 

Edison Scholars Program //  Edison International

Amount: $50,000 over four years

Deadline: Application opens October 2024

This scholarship is available to high school seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must live in Southern California Edison's service territory. Must plan to pursue a degree in STEM, demonstrate financial need, and attend an accredited four-year college or university full-time during the 2024-2025 school year. 

Spotlight Scholarship // The Music Center

Amount: Varies

Deadline: October 14, 2024

This scholarship “provides cash scholarships and artistic development to empower high school students by emphasizing preparation, courage, critical thinking and perseverance while providing an invaluable opportunity for students to hone their performing skills.” Only high school students living in Southern California are eligible to apply. 

Stand Up To Distracted Driving Scholarship // Kanoski Bresney

Amount: $1,000

Deadline: November 13, 2024

This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate students who will be attending college through the fall. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Applicants must submit an essay on a given topic related to distracted driving.

Dr. Juan Andrade Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders // United States Hispanic Leadership Institute

Amount: $500-$1,000

Deadline: November 30, 2024

This scholarship is available to students enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student in an accredited four-year or two-year institution in the U.S. or U.S. territories. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a verifiable need for financial support. At least one parent must be of Hispanic ancestry. Non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply (DACA or undocumented).

Stephen J. Bradley Stop Hunger Scholarship // Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation

Amount: $10,000 scholarship and a $5,000 grant for your hunger-related charity

Deadline: December 5, 2024

This scholarship is open to students who are "using their creativity, academic studies, and organizational skills to help fight hunger in their communities." 

San Diego Chinese Women’s Association Scholarship // San Diego Chinese Women’s Association

Amount: $1,000-$1,500

Deadline: Application opens January 2025

This scholarship is open to high school students in San Diego County who are of at least one-quarter Chinese descent. The $1,000 scholarship is available for use at a two-year community college or vocational program, and the $1,500 scholarship is available for use at a four-year university. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible for both.

BECA General Scholarship // BECA Foundation

Deadline: February 1, 2025

Applicants must be a San Diego County high school graduate who is entering college in the fall of 2025. Must submit two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and transcripts.

Fifth Month Scholarship //  Unigo

Amount:  $1,500

Deadline: May 31, 2025

This scholarship is open to U.S. citizens and residents 14 years or older. Applicants must submit a maximum 250-word essay answering the following prompt: "May is the fifth month of the year. Write a letter to the number five explaining why five is important. Be serious or be funny. Either way, here's a high five to you for being original."

Two letters of recommendation showing proof of volunteer experience and a 500-word essay required.

This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who are Bay Area residents (San Francisco or within 50 miles). Applicants must submit a 500-word essay responding to the following prompt: "There are some lessons that just need to be learned through experience. What are the most important rules of the road that generally aren’t taught in driver’s ed?"

The Minerva Scholarship Program // Women in California Leadership

Amount: $3,000-$10,000

This scholarship is open to California residents enrolled in a full-time college program during the 2024-2025 school year. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and “must gender identify as a woman or girl, or are female regardless of gender identity.” Must write a 250-word personal statement.

Artistic Scholarship //  Against the Grain Productions

This scholarship is open to Asian high school seniors and current college students who are/will be pursuing a major in the performing and visual arts, journalism and/or mass communications. Applicants must be citizens, national or legal permanent residents of the U.S., and have at least a 3.0 GPA. 

There’s Space for Everyone Scholarship // Extra Space Storage

Amount: $3,000

This scholarship is open to incoming and current undergraduate students in the U.S. during the fall 2024 quarter/semester. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and submit an essay answering the following prompt: “How have you exhibited a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, or social justice through work, service, or other extra-curricular activities, and how will your education help you continue this commitment during college and beyond?”

LGBTQ+ students who are accepted to or enrolled in a college or university in the U.S. are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Financial need will not be considered.

Applicants must be high school seniors planning to receive their bachelor’s degree in a science-related field with hopes of building a career in healthcare. Must submit a personal statement detailing who you are, what drew you to healthcare, and your greatest accomplishments so far.

NCJW LA Scholarships // National Council of Jewish Women

NCJW’s scholarships are available to students who live and attend school in Los Angeles County. Personal narrative statement, transcripts, enrollment verification, and two letters of recommendation are required to submit application.

Incight Scholarship // Incight

Deadline : April 15, 2024

Disabled students who plan on enrolling in higher education (community college, four-year universities, etc.) for the 2024-2025 academic year can apply to Incight’s annual scholarship. Must live in Oregon, Washington, or California. Award amounts vary.

Chicana Latina Foundation Scholarships // Chicana Latina Foundation

Deadline: April 5, 2024

This scholarship is offered to Latina students in Northern California. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, university, or community college in one of the following California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, San Francisco, Sonoma, or Yolo. Applicants must have lived in one of the above counties for at least two years.

Ebell/Flint Scholarship Program // The Ebell of Los Angeles

Amount: $3,000-$5,000

Deadline: April 2, 2024

The Ebell/Flint Scholarship is open to male and female undergraduate students of any major who currently attend private or public non-profit colleges or universities in Los Angeles County. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on financial need, academic achievement, and community service/leadership.

CA Dream Act // California Student Aid Commission

This application is open to incoming and current college students who attended a California high school for a minimum of three years and will enroll in an accredited California college or university. Applicant must be a non-resident applying under AB 540 and AB 131.

First-Generation College Student Scholarship //  Kadzai Law Group

Deadline:  April 1, 2024

This scholarship is open to first-generation undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens. Applicants must also submit a 3- to 5-minute video answering one of the prompts provided that applies to them. 

Unboxing Your Life Video Scholarship //  Sttark

Amount: $4,000

Deadline: March 31, 2024

This scholarship is open to high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens. Applicants must create a 5-minute "unboxing" video of their life that showcases their originality and unique personality, as well as provide a 250-word biography with their application video.

“You Can’t Label People, but You Can Label Products" Scholarship // Sttark

This scholarship is open to high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens. Applicants must submit a 1,000-word essay responding to the following prompt: “You can’t label people, but you can label products,” as well as design their own label related to their essay that belongs on a product, but not a person. In addition to their essay and label design, applicants must submit a 250-word biography about themselves.

To be considered for these scholarships, applicants must be high school seniors of African descent with plans to pursue a degree in engineering, computer science, computer information systems, or select business programs. Must demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and higher. Must submit one letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a maximum 500-word essay.

Disability Scholarship //  Microsoft

Amount:  $20,000 over four years

High school seniors who are disabled are eligible for this renewable scholarship. Must be planning to major in engineering, computer science, computer information systems, law, business, or a related field. Must have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Women at Microsoft Scholarship //  Microsoft

Amount:  Up to $5,000 offered one time or renewable for up to four years

High school seniors who identify as women or non-binary and plan to attend a vocational school or college to pursue a career in STEAM are eligible for this scholarship. Students must have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Middle Class Scholarship //  California Student Aid Commission

Deadline: March 2, 2024

The Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) provides undergraduate students, including students pursuing a teaching credential, with family income and assets up to $201,000, a scholarship to attend University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) campuses. Students must file their FAFSA or CA Dream Act application before applying for the MCS.

Deadline: March 1, 2024

This scholarship is available to minority high school seniors and college students who are studying or plan to study in fields related to chemistry. Must be or plan to be a full-time student in an accredited college or university. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. 

Foundation 649 Scholarship // Foundation 649

Amount: $4,000 over four years

This scholarship is for Asian American and Pacific Islander students who are seeking a college degree and have a track record of involvement and interest in AAPI communities, issues, or causes. Applicants must write a maximum 1,000 word essay to be considered. Undocumented students are welcome to apply.

POE Scholarships // Pursuit of Excellence

Amount: $500-$5,000

POE offers scholarships to students from the South Bay Area. Individual scholarship eligibility requirements may vary. 

PCF Scholarships // The Peninsula College Fund

Amount: $3,000 per school year

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must attend a public or private high school in San Mateo or Santa Clara County, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8, be a first-generation college student, and demonstrate financial need.

This scholarship is awarded to minority students who transfer in the fall or spring following the award from Contra Costa County community colleges in California to junior standing in four-year accredited institutions.

• What’s one problem with the criminal justice system in the US and how would you fix it?
• Write an essay on access to legal services in the United States. This essay should focus on the need and affordability of legal services and propose ideas to help meet the demand of these services.
• With the advancement in technology, what are some of the threats to those charged with a crime?

Applicants to this scholarship must have been enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university between May 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Any BIPOC and/or female high school senior or undergraduate who is a first-generation, low-income student interested in STEM may apply for this scholarship. Applicants must write a 400-600 word-essay answering the following prompt: “What are some challenges you've had to overcome while pursuing your education and how do you plan on making a positive impact on the world through your STEM education?”

Applicants must write a minimum 600 word essay answering one of the following prompts: 1) Why are the academic results of minority youth (k-12), in the areas of reading and mathematics below the national average and what strategies do you believe school systems should implement to improve these statistics? 2) How should the minority community address the nation’s need for economic development? BEE, YOU Scholarship // Busy Bee's Virtual Assistance & Management, LLC

This scholarship is available to high school seniors and current college students with financial need. Applicants must be working part or full-time in addition to being students in order to qualify for this scholarship. Applicants must write a 500-word maximum essay responding to one of the provided prompts as well as submit a link to a 2-minute video sharing your experience as a working student.

First of Us Scholarship // Gutierrez Law Firm

This scholarship is open to any current high school seniors, vocational students, or college students in the U.S. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. and submit a 750-1000 word essay response to the prompt: Share with us a story of how you or a family member overcame hardships as a first-generation college student and the lessons you or your family member have learned along the way.

Western Regional Scholarship // Korean American Scholarship Foundation

Deadline: June 30, 2023

Full-time students who are of Korean descent are eligible for this scholarship. Students must be enrolled at a college or university in one of the designated Western region states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington) during the 2023-2024 school year. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and can demonstrate need for financial assistance.

Advocates Law Scholarship // The Advocates Injury Attorneys

This scholarship is open to current and incoming students currently enrolled in an accredited college in the United States. Applicants must submit a 300-500-word essay answering the following prompt: “What are some of the problems we face on the roads? How can you contribute to improving road safety? What laws (if any) could be changed to accomplish the goal of making streets safer for everyone?”

STEM Scholarship // NextStepU

This scholarship is open to students who are interested in pursuing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) major. Applicant must be 16-22 years old at the time of entry and be a registered user of NextStepU.com.

STEM Scholarship Program // IMEG

Deadline: May 15, 2023

This scholarship is open to college students in their sophomore through senior year. Applicants must have financial need and be actively pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field with an engineering focus. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Better Together STEM Scholarship Program //  PG&E

These scholarships are available to students pursuing STEM-related studies at universities in California and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the United States. Students must be California residents and PG&E customers at the time of application.

This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors in California that have expressed interest in pursuing a career in special education or a related field such as school psychology, social work, or counseling. Applicants must describe activities which demonstrate their support, involvement, and commitment to inclusive practices for students with special needs in educational and/or community settings.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Alumnae Chapter Scholarship // Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc

This scholarship is available to Black, female high school seniors in designated areas of San Diego County. Must have a minimum of a 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must submit a transcript, two letters of recommendation, and their application essay.

San Diego Association of Black Journalists Scholarship // San Diego Association of Black Journalists

Multiple scholarships will be awarded to Black high school and college students interested in pursuing careers in journalism, public relations, mass communications, or any other media-related field. Must write two short essays to be considered.

National Scholarship // National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs

This scholarship is open to African American high school seniors who have a GPA of 3.0 and above and submit a typed essay of no less than 300 words on the topic: “Explain the Benefits You Have Gained through the Contributions of Two (2) Trailblazers of African Descent within the past twenty (20) years, and How It Has Benefited You as a Person.”

Kim and Harold Louie Family Foundation Scholarship // The Kim and Harold Louie Family Foundation

Amount: Varies based on applicant factors

Deadline: March 17, 2023

This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and individuals entering their freshman year of college during the 2023-2024 academic year. Applicants must have at least a 3.7 GPA and demonstrate outstanding personal achievements, academic merit, leadership qualities and/or community service. Special consideration will be noted for applicants who have parents who are U.S. veterans or currently in the U.S. military, students with financial need, first generation college students, and students with a documented significant disability.

HOLA at Microsoft Scholarship // Microsoft

Deadline: March 15, 2023

This scholarship is available to Latinx high school seniors who need assistance paying for college. Must be planning to study Engineering, Computer Science, or Business in college. Must have a high school GPA of 3.0 and higher. DACA recipients are eligible to apply.

Virginia Smith Trust // Merced County Office of Education

Deadline: March 2, 2023

Students who resided and attended a public high school in Merced, California are eligible for this scholarship. Must be planning on attending a college full-time in the state of California.

1. ACWA Scholarship

Amount: $3,500

Deadline: N/A

Eligibility: attend an accredited University of California or California State University at the start of the academic year covered by the scholarship, commit to full-time enrollment for the scholarship year, pursue a degree in a field listed below

Application Requirements: two letters of recommendation, official college transcripts, essay

The Association of California Water Agencies offers two scholarships to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in a water resources-related field related to engineering, agricultural and/or urban water supply, environmental studies, or public administration at the start of the academic year covered by the scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on motivation, scholastic achievement, and application materials.

2. Bobette Bibo Gugliotta Memorial Scholarship for Creative Writing

Amount: up to $1,000

Eligibility: high school senior or graduate of a public or private high school in San Mateo County or Santa Clara County planning to enroll in a four-year college or university full-time, must demonstrate creative writing ability or be majoring in creative writing

Application Requirements: two writing samples, personal statement, financial need documentation, two letters of recommendation, transcripts

Established in 1995, this scholarship honors the late author Bobette Bibo Gugliotta. Up to two on-time scholarships are awarded to creative writers who want to pursue writing as a major or career. Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

3. California Assn. of Collectors Educational Scholarship Foundation

Amount: $2,500/$2,000/$1,500

Deadline: June 30, 2022

Eligibility: current high school juniors and seniors enrolled in a CA high school and planning on attending any accredited public or private college, university, or trade school within 12 months of graduation

Application Requirements: essay

CACESF offers first, second, and third-place awards to students who are able to describe the importance of establishing and maintaining good financial credit during your college years. Semifinalists attend the CAC’s annual meeting and read their essays in front of a panel of judges, who will determine placement.

4. California Association of Winegrape Growers Foundation

Amount: varies

Deadline: March 6, 2022

Eligibility: must have a parent or legal guardian employed by a California wine grape grower during the current or past growing season, graduating high school seniors

Application Requirements: N/A

Annually, the CAWGF awards several scholarships:

• two 4-year scholarships of $8,000 for four-year school attendees
• four 2-year scholarships of $2,000 for two-year school attendees
• one Robert Miller Memorial Scholarship of either $500 (Alan Hancock College) or $1,000 (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo)

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, demonstrated scholastic ability, community involvement, leadership and/or work history, and determination to succeed.

5. Central California Asian Pacific Women

Eligibility: must be from Asian or Pacific Islander, woman-identifying, from a county listed below, entering or continuing undergraduate or graduation or re-entry to college/university

CCAPW provides scholarships for Asian and Pacific Islander (API) women Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, or Tulare to help fund their college education. Applicants are evaluated based on criteria like academic achievement, first-generation status, diversity, and contributions to the API community. You may receive a special award if you’re planning on studying business and/or health.

6. eQuality Scholarships

Amount: $6,000

Deadline: January 31, 2022

Eligibility: graduating high school seniors, community college transfer students, medical students, residents of northern or central California

Application Requirements: varies by level of education/program

For over 30 years, the eQuality Scholarship Collaborative has honored students for their service to the LGBTQ+ community, with a cumulative awards amount surpassing $1,700,000 in 2021. Applicants of all sexual orientations and gender identities are encouraged to apply. This year, eQuality awarded 11 scholarships.

7. Golden State Minority Foundation Scholarship

Deadline: varies

Eligibility: must be an underrepresented ethnic minority, must be a full-time student at a four-year college or university, minimum 3.0 GPA

Application Requirements: varies

The Golden State Minority Foundation, though not the granting institution, provides programmatic services that support education for underrepresented students. These awards are given to students who qualify as underrepresented minorities who demonstrate community service.

8. Good Tidings Community Service Scholarship

Amount: $10,000

Deadline: November 12, 2021

Eligibility: high school senior residing in a county listed below

Application Requirements: application, letter of recommendation

The Good Tidings Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors residing in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, SanMateo, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, or Yolo. The scholarship is aimed at helping students committed to community service achieve their dreams, regardless of financial status, ethnic background, religion, or gender. 

9. Honmyo Nguyen Family Trust Scholarship

Amount: up to $1,500

Deadline: May 4, 2022

Eligibility: must reside in Santa Clara County planning to attend a four-year California public university, minimum 3.3 GPA

Application Requirements: application packet and financial documentation

This fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation awards up to two annual scholarships to students who plan to address the most challenging problems and improve the quality of life in Silicon Valley. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic leadership, and academic excellence. Applicants should be committed to addressing the most challenging problems and improving the quality of life within Silicon Valley.

10. LA Clippers Stay in School Scholarship

Amount: $4,000

Deadline: February 15, 2022

Eligibility: residents of greater LA area, seniors planning on attending a four-year college

The basketball team the Los Angeles Clippers (LA Clippers) assists college-bound students by offering six scholarships to Los Angeles area residents. Recipients must plan on attending a four-year institution in the fall after the scholarship is awarded.

11. Larry Acterman Public Education Award

Deadline: N/A (opens in January 2022)

Eligibility: high school senior, intention of enrollment in full-time four-year degree program at a public college or university in California, graduating from Long Beach Unified School District

Application Requirements: transcript, essay, three letters of recommendation

This award honors late teacher and mentor Larry Acterman, who was an advocate for public education. The scholarship is meant to encourage and support students who intend to pursue a career as a public school teacher in California. Selection is based on a commitment to teaching and a demonstration of academic achievement.

12. Ralph Hale and Martha L. Ruppert Educational Scholarship

Amount: up to $10,000

Eligibility: must have a maximum 3.3 GPA, demonstrate financial hardship, show academic promise and continuous GPA improvement, graduating senior or graduate of a public or private high school in San Mateo County, San Francisco County, or Santa Clara County

Application Requirements: personal statement, financial need documentation, two letters of recommendation, transcript

This scholarship was created to help young people who are “late bloomers,” meaning they have shown academic promise in late high school or early college but have low GPAs because of earlier academic difficulties. Up to 30 scholarships are awarded to students who are planning to enroll or are already enrolled in a two- or four-year university, college, or vocational school, and previous recipients may reapply.

13 (Bonus). CollegeVine Scholarships

Amount: $2,000

Deadline: Quarterly

Eligibility: high school student and US resident

Application Requirements: create a free CollegeVine account or fill out chancing profile if you already have an account.

CollegeVine provides a quarterly, no-essay scholarship of $2,000. All you have to do is sign up for a free account, which allows you to see your chances of acceptance at 1,600+ schools, get your essays reviewed by a peer, ask questions in our community forum, and more. If you already have an account, just make sure your chancing profile is filled out.

Applying for scholarships takes time and effort, but when you receive your awards, it will be well worth it. To maximize your chances of success, follow these tips.

• Research each scholarship to ensure you meet the requirements and understand the application. Then you can put your best foot forward!
• Apply to many scholarships for which you qualify, including niche ones geared toward different demographics. If the pool of applicants is smaller you have a better chance of getting the scholarship. 
• Have someone else proofread your application before you submit. A second pair of eyes is critical. 
• Create a spreadsheet with deadlines, required materials, and other information.

Dr. Paul McFetridge (1954–2014) was an integral part of the Linguistics Department for over three decades, first as a student, and then as a faculty member since 1990. Paul was a talented computational linguist and served the department as Chair for two separate terms. More recently he was an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (2007–2014). Paul’s work was greatly valued, and he is deeply missed by colleagues, staff and students alike. Donations to the Paul McFetridge memorial fund can be made through this secure link .

Curious about the 2023 recipients of this scholarship? Meet Josh Thompson and Ellie Dueck, two Linguistics students (Josh has since graduated) who are passionate about the scientific study of language. Here, we discuss their academic journey at SFU and the impact that winning the Paul McFetridge Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship in Linguistics has had on them.

What prompted you to apply for the Paul McFetridge scholarship? Were you applying to several or did you target this one specifically?

Ellie: It was while I was browsing through an SFU pdf of available scholarships when my eyes caught the word ‘linguistics’. Since I met all the requirements I figured, “Why not apply?” Out of the ones that were listed there, it was the only one I was eligible for, and therefore the only one I applied for. I feel so lucky and grateful to have won it.

Describe the impact that the scholarship had on your academic career.

Josh: It felt really good to receive the scholarship! It definitely motivated me to continue to try and get good grades.

Ellie: Beyond resulting in a week’s worth of smiles, it also gave me a big boost in confidence. I tend to underestimate my own abilities and almost didn’t apply for the scholarship because I thought there was no way I would be chosen out of everybody. However, I clearly did end up getting it and I cannot be more grateful. I have also felt more empowered in my studies since finding out I won, knowing that I really am somebody with the potential to do well in Linguistics. 

Have you received any other awards or scholarships from SFU or other institutions?

Josh: SFU Undergraduate Open Scholarship

Ellie: SFU Undergraduate Open Scholarship SFU International Mobility Award 

Have you participated as a Research Assistant in any of our Linguistics Research Labs ? 

Josh: I was a Research Assistant at the Phonological Processing Lab . Being an RA at the Phono Lab was an amazing experience. Getting a firsthand look at how research is conducted was interesting and I think it gave me an advantage when it came to writing research papers in my classes. I also learnt a lot of collaboration skills as well as how to use certain programs such as Excel, Access, and Praat. 

Tell us about the next steps in your academic journey. 

Ellie: I am hoping to graduate in Summer 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics. I’ve been considering the Accelerated Masters in Linguistics at SFU and contemplating whether that might be a good fit for me going into my final year. 

Josh: I’ve just started at UBC’s Master’s of Library and Information Studies program this Fall 2024. I chose to pursue Library and Information Studies as I am really interested in the facilitation of information as well as the preservation of information. I’d like to eventually become an academic librarian, but I am also interested in community librarianship. 

Which Linguistics course has been your most memorable? Have you been inspired by a particular instructor?

Ellie: I really enjoyed Introduction to Linguistics (LING 220-3). I feel that this course made me really excited to discover all that Linguistics has to offer and to experience each branch of linguistics more in depth. I must also mention Communication and Language (LING 100-3), which was the course that made me fall in love with linguistics. When I started this course I was a History Major, but by the end of the semester, I knew that I would be switching to Linguistics. Both these courses were so fascinating and taught me just how much of our communication and language is engrained into who we are and how we think. Dr. Ivelina Tchizmarova was my instructor for LING220 as well as later for Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults (LING 362-3). I found her very inspiring in both of these courses. She is very committed to her students and spent time getting to know everybody in the class. Eva eagerly answered any student questions whether it was about course material or about which vowel sounds she associated with most. I truly felt supported in her classes and knew I could come to her if I needed any assistance or advice. 

Last question is for Josh. Looking back at your time as an SFU undergraduate, what activities did you pursue just for fun when not engaging in academics?

Josh: I spent a lot of time either playing table tennis or walking around Burnaby campus.
