While all that choice — colors, formats, visuals, fonts — can feel liberating, it‘s important that you’re careful in your selection as not all design combinations add up to success.

In this blog post, I’m sharing some of my favorite PowerPoint tips and templates to help you nail your next presentation.

In my opinion, a great PowerPoint presentation gets the point across succinctly while using a design that doesn't detract from it.

Here are some of the elements I like to keep in mind when I’m building my own.

1. Minimal Animations and Transitions

Believe it or not, animations and transitions can take away from your PowerPoint presentation. Why? Well, they distract from the content you worked so hard on.

A good PowerPoint presentation keeps the focus on your argument by keeping animations and transitions to a minimum. I suggest using them tastefully and sparingly to emphasize a point or bring attention to a certain part of an image.

2. Cohesive Color Palette

I like to refresh my memory on color theory when creating a new PowerPoint presentation.

A cohesive color palette uses complementary and analogous colors to draw the audience’s attention and help emphasize certain aspects at the right time.

Mesmerize your audience by adding some neon colors and effects to your PowerPoint slides. Adding pops of color to your presentation will create visual interest and keep your audience engaged.

What I like: Neon will add personality and depth to your presentation and will help the information you're providing stand out and be more memorable.

2. Use an interesting background image.

Do you have some interesting nature photos from a recent road trip? Or maybe a holiday passed, and you have gorgeous photos to share? If so, consider incorporating them into your PowerPoint.

What I like: PowerPoints don't have to be stuffy and boring. They can be fun and a unique or interesting background will enhance the experience of your presentation.

3. Or be minimal.

Have you ever heard of K.I.S.S.? Not the band! I mean, Keep It Simple, Sweetheart. If you're worried too many colors or visuals could take attention away from the message of your presentation, consider going minimal.

Pro tip: Stick to no more than three colors if you're going for a minimalist design in your slides.

4. Incorporate illustrations.

Illustrations are a great way to highlight or break down a point in your presentation. They can also add a bit of whimsy and fun to keep viewers engaged.

5. Use all caps.

Using all capital letters can draw your audience's eyes to where you need them, helping cement your message in their minds. It can also just be aesthetically pleasing.

Pro tip: If you choose to use all capital letters, use varying fonts so readers can tell which information is important and which are supporting details.

6. Alternate slide layouts

You don't want readers to grow bored with your presentation. So, to retain visual interest, use alternating slide layouts. The example above shows PowerPoint slides alternating between vertical and horizontal layouts.

This keeps things interesting and ensures your presentation isn't monotonous.

7. Inject a little humor.

Humor is a great way to drive a point home and help people remember the information you're presenting. People remember a good joke, so if you have a funny pun to connect to a concept in a presentation, why not use it in a slide?

Pro tip: Remember you're in a professional setting, so keep your jokes appropriate. If you're worried a joke can get you a meeting with HR, then keep it to yourself.

8. Use duotones.

Duotones (or gradience) can take the aesthetic of your PowerPoint to new levels. They can provide a calming energy to your presentation and make viewers feel relaxed and eager to stay focused.

9. Include printed materials.

Let's say you have a PowerPoint you're proud of, but you want to go that extra mile to ensure your audience understands the material. A great way to do this would be to supplement your presentation with printed materials, as such as:

Pamphlets
Printed slides
Short quizzes on the material

10. Keep it to one chart or graph per slide.

This is both a design example and a warning. Graphs and charts are an excellent way of displaying quantitative data in a digestible format.

However, you should have no more than one graph or chart per slide so your presentation doesn't get too confusing or muddled.

11. Use a large font.

Just like capital letters, a large font will help your shift your audience's focus to key points in your presentation.

Pro tip: You can combine large fonts and capital letters to boost its effectiveness.

12. Include videos.

Embedding a video into your PowerPoint can help you expand on a point or effectively break down a complex topic. You can either embed a video from a platform like YouTube or TikTok or use HubSpot's Clip Creator to make your own.

Pro tip: Try to keep videos short, like, under a minute, and don't use more than one or two.

13. Use GIFs.

GIFs add more visual interest, and they can be a great way to add humor or personal touch to your PowerPoint presentation.

14. Use contrasting colors when comparing two ideas or arguments.

Contrasting colors can convey the difference between two opposing thoughts or arguments in a way that is visually appealing.

15. Add a touch of nature.

If you want your presentation to exude a calming energy to your audience, including images of trees, flowers, and natural landscapes can do the trick.

PowerPoint Theme Ideas

Covering a more creative subject for a younger or more energetic audience? I’d recommend using the cover slide design below. Its vibrant red color blocks and fun lines will appeal to your audience.

This simplistic presentation example employs several different colors and font weights, but instead of coming off as disconnected, the varied colors work with one another to create contrast and call out specific concepts.

What I like: The big, bold numbers help set the reader's expectations, as they clearly signify how far along the viewer is in the list of tips.

10. “Pixar's 22 Rules to Phenomenal Storytelling,” Gavin McMahon

This presentation by Gavin McMahon features color in all the right places. While each of the background images boasts a bright, spotlight-like design, all the characters are intentionally blacked out.

What I like: This helps keep the focus on the tips, while still incorporating visuals. Not to mention, it's still easy for me to identify each character without the details. (I found you on slide eight, Nemo.)

11. “Facebook Engagement and Activity Report,” We Are Social

Here's another great example of data visualization in the wild.

What I like: Rather than displaying numbers and statistics straight up, this presentation calls upon interesting, colorful graphs, and charts to present the information in a way that just makes sense.

12. “The GaryVee Content Model,” Gary Vaynerchuk

This wouldn‘t be a true Gary Vaynerchuk presentation if it wasn’t a little loud, am I right?

What I like: Aside from the fact that I love the eye-catching, bright yellow background, Vaynerchuk does a great job of incorporating screenshots on each slide to create a visual tutorial that coincides with the tips. He also does a great job including a visual table of contents that shows your progress as you go .

13. “20 Tweetable Quotes to Inspire Marketing & Design Creative Genius,” IMPACT Branding & Design

We‘ve all seen our fair share of quote-chronicling presentations but that isn’t to say they were all done well. Often the background images are poor quality, the text is too small, or there isn't enough contrast.

Well, this professional presentation from IMPACT Branding & Design suffers from none of said challenges.

What I like: The colorful filters over each background image create just enough contrast for the quotes to stand out.

14. “The Great State of Design,” Stacy Kvernmo

This presentation offers up a lot of information in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming.

What I like: The contrasting colors create visual interest and “pop,” and the comic images (slides 6 through 12) are used to make the information seem less buttoned-up and overwhelming.

15. “Clickbait: A Guide To Writing Un-Ignorable Headlines,” Ethos3

Not going to lie, it was the title that convinced me to click through to this presentation but the awesome design kept me there once I arrived.

What I like: This simple design adheres to a consistent color pattern and leverages bullet points and varied fonts to break up the text nicely.

16. “Digital Transformation in 50 Soundbites,” Julie Dodd

This design highlights a great alternative to the “text-over-image” display we've grown used to seeing.

What I like: By leveraging a split-screen approach to each presentation slide, Julie Dodd was able to serve up a clean, legible quote without sacrificing the power of a strong visual.

17. “Fix Your Really Bad PowerPoint,” Slide Comet

When you‘re creating a PowerPoint about how everyone’s PowerPoints stink, yours had better be terrific. The one above, based on the ebook by Seth Godin, keeps it simple without boring its audience.

What I like: Its clever combinations of fonts, together with consistent color across each slide, ensure you're neither overwhelmed nor unengaged.

18. “How Google Works,” Eric Schmidt

Simple, clever doodles tell the story of Google in a fun and creative way. This presentation reads almost like a storybook, making it easy to move from one slide to the next.

What I like: This uncluttered approach provides viewers with an easy-to-understand explanation of a complicated topic.

19. “What Really Differentiates the Best Content Marketers From The Rest,” Ross Simmonds

Let‘s be honest: These graphics are hard not to love. I especially appreciate the author’s cartoonified self-portrait that closes out the presentation. Well played, Ross Simmonds.

What I like: Rather than employing the same old stock photos, this unique design serves as a refreshing way to present information that's both valuable and fun.

20. “Be A Great Product Leader,” Adam Nash

This presentation by Adam Nash immediately draws attention by putting the company's logo first — a great move if your company is well known.

What I like: He uses popular images, such as ones of Megatron and Pinocchio, to drive his points home. In the same way, you can take advantage of popular images and media to keep your audience engaged.

It’s time to customize your chosen PowerPoint template for photography. Follow the steps below to make a great photography presentation with a PPT template.

For the purposes of this tutorial, I’m using the Contrast template from Envato Elements. It's got a clean design and three premade color schemes.

1. Choose Your Slides

Choose which slides you’re going to use in your presentation about photography. To do this, go to View > Slide Sorter and delete all the slides you don’t want to keep by right-clicking and deleting them.

2. Add Your Content

Here's where you can add your picture presentation ideas. Switch back to the Normal view and then go back to the Home tab. Now, double-click on any slide you want to edit.

Select all the text and replace it with your own as seen in the screenshot of slide #2.

3. Insert Your Images

Adding your own images is easy when you’re working with image placeholders. Click the picture icon on the placeholder.

Locate the image on your computer and add it to the PowerPoint photo presentation as I’ve done on slide #13.

4. Customize Colors

To change the color of the text, all you've got to do is select the text and then choose a color from the text color menu.

To change the color of the grey background, click on View > Slide Master . Then, select the grey background layer, right-click and select Format Shape .

Choose your preferred color under Solid Color Fill .

5. Customize Fonts

Customize the fonts by highlighting the text you want to customize.

Then choose a different font from the drop-down menu as I've done on slide #13.

Beyond hiding background graphics in the Layout Slides, you can also opt to hide the title or any footers.

Go to the Slide Master tab.

Unlike the previous functionality, these changes are made manually on each slide.

Create a New Layout Slide

What if you want different settings for only one Layout Slide? Well, you can break the rules a bit.

Let's say you desire to incorporate a different background color from your Master Slide, and you'd rather use a white Stencil font for the headings –but just for a particular Layout Slide.

Luckily for us, PowerPoint is flexible enough to make this happen . Here's what you need to do:

Click on the layout you want to edit. In this example, we will change the Title Slide Layout (the layout immediately below the Master Slide).

To change the color of the background , right-click on the slide and select "Format Background."
To edit the font style and color , highlight the text and the Shape Format tab will appear. There, you can customize it with the tools Text Fill, Text Outline, and Text Effects.

8. SXSW 2018 – Top Trends by Matteo Sarzana

People love visuals and this is an undeniable fact. The whole PowerPoint presentation is built on high-quality photos, each including a little tagline in the middle. We love the consistency, we love the factor of surprise, and we love the high engagement level this presentation creates. Just make sure to back up such presentation type with a good speech!

9. How to study effectively? by sadraus

Semi-transparent overlays, geometric shapes, a video inside… Everything about this PowerPoint presentation screams “modern”. The grayscale coloring is accompanied by a fresh green color accent. How to Use These Presentation Images

So now that we’ve shown you over 700 of the thousands of presentation images we have available for free use, we know what you’re thinking.

How can you use these photos in a presentation? And furthermore, how can you use them and ensure your slides still look well designed ?

There are several different ways to use images in your presentations, so let’s go over how you can do these right in Visme’s presentation maker.

Color Overlay

A color overlay is a transparent color on top of a photo. These are great to use when you want to add a photo onto a slide for emphasis, but you still need to include text on the slide.

Because it tends to be difficult to see text directly on top of a bright, busy photo, a color overlay is a great way to soften the photo and ease it into the background.

You can create a color overlay in Visme by clicking the Filter setting, choosing your color and selecting the opacity percentage. Check out a few other photo filter options here .

Create an accent in your slide by using an accent photo. The photo can be in the corner of your slide, covering the top or bottom half, taking up the left or right side or even right in the middle of your slide with your content surrounding it.

You can easily create an accent photo by selecting your photo from our photo library or uploading your own, then sizing it and dragging it to the area you want to accentuate.

You can easily upload a background photo by clicking the slide background and selecting a photo from the stock image library.

If the photo doesn’t fit perfectly, you can drag it around to ensure the area that you want to be visible is shown in your slide.

When using a background image with no color overlay, it’s a good idea to choose a photo with a lot of white space. This allows you to add visuals to your presentation slide while also including copy from your slide content.

If you’ve found a photo that is partially perfect, don’t worry. You can quickly and easily crop photos directly in the Visme design dashboard so that you’re only showcasing the part of the image that you want to be visible on your slide.

To crop a photo, select the Crop setting and drag the corners until the area that you want to see is selected. Then click Apply .

Last, but not least, is our feature image.

If you’ve found a photo that conveys your messaging perfectly, but you don’t want any text to distract your audience, you can include it as a feature image on a slide.

All you do is upload it as a background image or resize it so it covers the entire screen and let your words speak for themselves.

Not every slide needs to have copy on it. You can include feature images every few slides so that your audience still has something engaging to look at while you continue speaking.

To start off, here’s a video on the 10 essential presentation design tips to make sure that your presentations don’t fall under the YAWN category.

1. Use a minimalist presentation theme

CREATE THIS PRESENTATION TEMPLATE

The best designs can also be some of the simplest you see. In the Airbnb pitch deck below, they use a minimalist color scheme and font selection.

A minimalist design is sleek, organized and places the most important thing in focus: your information. There are no distracting stock images, icons, or content. Everything on this unique presentation feels like it belongs and works together perfectly.

2. Use a consistent design motif throughout your presentation

Here’s a go-to tip to for a cohesive presentation design: use a design motif. The motif could be a recurring shape (like circles, lines or arrows) or symbol (like a leaf for “growth” or a mountain for “goals”). For more ideas, check out our guide to common symbols and meanings used in design .

For example, this presentation template uses circles as a design motif. The same circle icon is used in three different colors to add a bubbly touch to the design. The team photos are also incorporated using circle frames:

7. Break your genre mold for a fun presentation idea

When I first clicked on this creative presentation from SEMrush, I was not expecting to be transported into a comic book. I’m glad I clicked because it may be the most unique slide deck I have ever seen. Going this extreme with your presentation ideas may seem a bit risky, but to be able to break the mold in this age of cookie-cutter presentations is worth it.

To leave a lasting impression on your audience, consider transforming your slides into an interactive presentation. Here are 15 interactive presentation ideas to enhance interactivity and engagement.

8. Make your presentation cover slide count

As I was scrolling through all of the presentations, this one made me stop in my tracks. It could be that I have a life-long love of Star Wars, or it could be that their presentation cover slide was designed to do just that: grab your attention. That’s why you should not stick with a boring, text-only title slide. Don’t be afraid to use icons and illustrations to make a statement.

9. Alternate slide layouts to keep your presentation engaging

Keeping your audience engaged throughout an entire presentation is hard, even if you have been working on your presentation skills . No one wants to look at slides that look exactly the same for an hour. But on the other hand, you can’t create a unique masterpiece for each slide.

That’s why I’m very impressed with what the designers did in the presentation example above. They use a consistent visual theme on each slide, but alternate between vertical and horizontal orientations.

The swapping of orientations will show people that the presentation is progressing nicely. It can help you make a strong, almost physical, distinction between ideas, sections or topics.

10. Make your audience laugh, or at least chuckle

Sometimes you need to not take your business presentations too seriously. Not sure what I mean? Go check out slide number 10 on this slide deck below.

If you did not actually laugh out loud, then I don’t know what to tell you. Small illustrated embellishments can be very powerful because they evoke an emotional response and to gain your audience’s trust.

11. Supplement your presentation with printed materials

Printed takeaways (such as brochures and business cards ) give audience members a chance to take home the most important elements of your presentation in a format they can easily access without using a computer. Make sure you brand these materials in a way that’s visually consistent with your slide deck, with the same color scheme, icons, and other iconic features; otherwise, your recipients will just end up scratching their heads.

If you’re giving people multiple materials, try packaging them all into one convenient presentation folder. There are over 100 styles with a wide range of custom options, so feel free to get creative and make your folder stand out. Sometimes a unique die cut or an unusual stock is all you need to make something truly memorable. Here are some brochure templates to get you started.

12. Only use one chart or graphic per slide

Having too much information on a slide is the easiest way to lose the focus of your audience. This is especially common when people are using graphs, charts or tables .

In this creative slide deck, the author made sure to only include one focal point per slide, and I applaud them for it. I know this may sound like a simple presentation tip, but I have seen many people lose their audience because the slides are too complex.

13. Keep your employee engagement presentations light

Sometimes you need to get away from stuffy, professional presentation ideas to capture your audience’s attention. In this case, Officevibe used some very colorful and playful illustrations to stand out from the crowd.

14. Feature a map when talking about locations

Including a map in your creative presentations is a fantastic idea! Not only do they make an interesting focal point for your slide layout, they also make location-based information easier to understand.

This cool presentation example by our pro designers at Venngage uses maps to visualize information. This map both dominates the screen, and also displays all the locations being covered.

15. Use a font that is large and in charge

If you are presenting to a small group or a packed stadium, make sure your audience can see your text! Use a large and in charge font that can be read from even the nosebleed seats.

Honestly, you really never know where your unique presentation will be seen. It could be seen in a conference room or conference hall, and everything in between. Be ready to present almost anywhere with a bold and easy to read font.

16. Use pop culture references to build a fun presentation

Using a meme or pop culture reference is another way that you can jive with your audience. It can be used to quickly get a point across without saying a word or create a moment that you can connect with the room. For example in this presentation, they used Napoleon Dynamite to give the audience feelings of nostalgia.

17. Use more than one font weight on your presentation cover slide

Just like you would never use one font on an infographic, you should never use just one font on your presentation (for more tips, read our guide on how to choose fonts ). In this presentation example from HubSpot, they use a bunch of different font weights to add emphasis to key words and ideas.

As you can see, they use a bold font on the presentation cover to bring attention to Steve Jobs name. This makes it easy for the audience to know what your presentation is going to be about from the beginning as well.

18. Use a color theme for each idea

Color is another extremely powerful nonverbal tool that you can use to guide your audience. By using a different color for each section of your creative presentation, Dell is able to clearly indicate when they are switching points or ideas. Going from green to orange, and even red almost effortlessly.

This is a great way to design a list, guide, or a how-to presentation as well. And each color can be assigned to a different step or number with ease.

19. Use illustrations instead of pictures

An easy way to keep your design consistent throughout your unique presentation is to use illustrations like in this slide deck by Domo.

They used illustrations instead of pictures to show off their subject on slide numbers 4-10 and it looks fantastic. This will ensure that the audience focuses on the content, instead of just the photo they could have used.

It also helps that illustrations are a top design trend for 2020 .

20. Use contrasting colors to compare two perspectives or sides of an argument

Contrasting colors can be used to quickly show each side of topic or an argument. For example in this presentation, they use this trick to show the difference between their company and the competition.

They use color very effectively in this example to show their company is better, in a nonverbal way. With a lighter color and illustrated icons, the company is able to position them as the better choice. All without saying a word.

Now if they would have used similar colors, or a single color the effect wouldn’t have been as strong or noticeable.

21. Include your own personal interests

This example is one of the most interesting and cool presentations I have seen in awhile, so I suggest checking out the entire thing. The creator inserts a bunch of his personal interests into the slide to make his presentation about education fun and relatable. And they even use a Super Mario Bros inspired presentation cover, so you know it has to be fantastic!

22. Try to stick to groups of three

How many major ideas should be present on your presentation aid? Never break your presentation layout down into anything more than thirds. This means there should be at most three columns, three icons, three ideas and so on. A great example of this idea starts on slide number 9 in this slide deck and continues throughout the rest of the presentation.

23. Add a timeline to help visualize ideas

One of the best ways to visualize a complex process or historical event is to use a timeline presentation. A list of all the steps or events is just not going to cut it in a professional setting. You need to find an engaging way to visualize the information.

Take the presentation example above , where they outline the rise and fall of Athens in a visually stimulating way.

24. Label your graphs & charts

If the people at Pollen VC had not added those annotations to the graphs on slide number 5, I would have definitely not known what to make of that graph.

But when you combine the visuals on a graph with descriptive text, the graph is able to paint a picture for your audience. So make your graphs easy to understand by annotating them (this is a chart design best practice ).

25. White font over pictures just works

There is a reason that you see so many quotes or sayings in a white font that are then overlaid on an image. That it is because it just works in so many situations and the text is very easy to read on any image.

If you do not believe me, look at the slide deck example above where they use a white font with a few different fonts and about 100 images. Plus the presentation template is chocked full of other tips on how to create a winning slideshow.

26. Color code your points across the whole presentation

27. Use a simple flow chart to break down a process

If you’re a fan of the movie Step Brothers , you may have heard of Prestige Worldwide before. In this fun presentation example they are back to sell you on their business model and growth plans.

This time, the presentation will be effective because it actually talks about what the business does.

As you can see in the example above, the designer used minimalist icons that fit the slide designs. All of the other graphics, charts and visual elements fit together nicely as well.

Plus the icons don’t distract from the content, which could ruin a stellar presentation.

31. Use a consistent presentation layout

In this example from Bannersnack, they use a consistent layout on each of their slides to help with the flow by using the same margins and text layout.

32. Use loud colors as much as possible

This means your content needs to answer a common question and your design needs to be clutter-free. For example, look at this very social media-friendly. 40. Use shapes to integrate your photos into the slides

Want to include a bunch of images in your presentation? I say do it!

Now most of the time you would add a raw image directly to your slide. However, if you want to present images in a professional way I would recommend using an image frame .

Like in the example above, you can use these frame to create a collage of images almost instantly. Or provide a similar visual theme to all of your slides.

Overall, I believe it’s a great way to add a new visual component to your presentation.

41. Hijack someone’s influence in your marketing slides

It could be a case study, a collection of ideas or just some quotes from the influencer. But what makes it effective is that the audience knows the influencer and trusts them. If you haven’t noticed, illustrated icons are having a revival in 2020 and beyond. This is likely because minimalist icons dominated the design world for the past decade. And now people want something new.

Brands also like using illustrated icons because they are seen as genuine and fun.

And because they are so eye-catching you can use them as focal points in your presentation slides. Just like they did in the creative presentation example above.

Picking the perfect icon is tough, learn how you can use infographic icons like a pro.

45. Use a quirky presentation theme

This caught my eye immediately because of the amount of work that I knew was behind this. It’s a good idea to summarize your points before you end your presentation , especially if you’ve covered a lot of information. In this presentation example, Deanta summarizes exactly what they do on slide numbers 16-18. They also provide their contact information in case their audience has any more questions. If you are looking for useful insights into the topic of your presentation, talk to some influencers in your niche. These are called “expert roundups” in the content marketing world and they are incredibly shareable.

Plus, they are pretty easy to create and have a great shelf life. In the example above, we talked to a gaggle of marketing experts about what makes a SlideShare great.

55. Use bold & brash colors throughout

It should not require a Master’s degree in statistics to understand the graphs that someone uses in a presentation. Instead, the axis should be easy to read, the colors should enforce the point, and the data should be clearly plotted.

For example, in this presentation on slide numbers 14 and 25, the graphs nail all of those tips perfectly.

57. Condense your presentation into a memorable line

If you can, try condensing your information into a simple one-liner to help the message stick with your audience. In slide number 36 of this presentation, Mika Aldaba does just that and shows that “Facts + Feelings = Data Storytelling.”

He does this again a few times throughout the presentation with other memorable one-liners.

58. Bring attention to important figures with colorful icons

In the presentation example above, all that’s used is a simple circle to make each figure a focal point. It’s really that easy, but many people leave it out of their presentations.

59. Anchor Your Text With Icons

A neat way to keep your slide deck organized is to number your slides or points using semi-opaque lettering in the background.

67. Overlay stock photos with color

An easy way to edit photos to make them consistent is to add a transparent color overlay. In this example, Change Sciences uses a blue overlay on all of their photos. Plus, the color you choose can also help convey a particular mood.

68. Use black and white blocks

An easy way to make your text pop, particularly on a photo background, is to use white font on a black blog background (and vise-versa). Check out this slide deck by Abhishek Shah, which uses this trick in an effective way.

Sometimes the best way to get your point across is to throw some diagrams into the presentation mix. But be sure to make is something that the audience can pick up on in three to five seconds tops.

71. Get experts to share tips

If you want to provide even more value to your audience than you can offer yourself, why not call in some expert reinforcement? See what experts in your field have to say on the topic of your presentation and include their tips and insights. Plus you can hijack their influence and expand your audience fairly quickly.

72. Mimic a popular presentation style

Uber’s pitch deck helped them raise millions of dollars in venture capital eventually leading to the glorious moment when they IPOed this year.

And who knows? Maybe you might start the next Uber. But to raise money, you will need to create flawless business pitch decks to impress investors and raise those dollars.

73. Plan your presentation idea ahead of time

I know that minimalist designs are all the rage this year, but there is a big difference between a well-thought-out minimalist design and a lazy design without the finish touches. The same goes for a cluttered design with too many things going on at once.

That’s why it’s worth it to take the time to really plan out your presentation ideas and design concepts. Take this slide deck about storytelling by HighSpark. A quick glance will tell you that they put a lot of thought into designing their slides.

74. Use tables to compare your brand to the competition in sales presentations/pitch decks

There are a lot of ways to visually compare similar things in this day and age. You could use a comparison infographic , or even a venn diagram!

However, when it comes to presentations I think that the simple table is best. Especially if you are comparing more than two things, like in this presentation example.

75. Blend icons & content effortlessly

Usually, icons are used as eye-catching objects detectors or anchors for text in a slideshow. But they can be used for so much more than that!

76. Make your audience want more

This tactic has been used by everyone since the idea of marketing was invented (or close to that). In this presentation example called “100 Growth Hacks, 100 Days” the creator only shows the audience the first 10 days of it and then uses a call to action at the end of the presentation to encourage them to seek out the rest.

The only risk with these kinds of presentation ideas is if your initial content is not great, you can’t expect your audience to seek out more information.

77. Use memes (for real, though)

Usually, memes do not have a place in a serious business setting, so maybe don’t use them for formal presentations. But if you’re covering a lighter topic, or if you’re going for a fun presentation that will connect with your audience, don’t be afraid to throw a meme or two into the mix.

The audience immediately knows what you are trying to say when you use a popular meme in your presentation. For example, on slide number 7, the creator uses a meme to show that it will be hard to create great content

78. Include a slide that introduces your team in pitch decks

In this presentation example, the creators decided to include their team on a slide. I think it’s a great gesture.

Showing your team can help the audience put a face to your brand and make the whole company feel more genuine. So if there is a team that has helped you get where you are today, give them some recognition!

79. Feature a complementary color palette

Even though I am not a formally trained designer, I still understand that proper color usage is the base of any good design. Although not all of the tenets of color theory work great for presentations, complementary colors are always a great pick.

Take a look at the color usage in this business presentation from Gary Vaynerchuk below . The purple and Snapchat yellow, which are complementary colors, look fantastic and the content jumps off the screen.

80. Use a heavy or bold font

The very back of the room should be able to read your content if you are giving a group presentation. To ensure that your entire audience can read the slides I would not only use a large font, but also use a heavy font. If you are confused by what I mean by a heavy font take a look at this unique presentation example by Slides That Rock.

81. Do the math for your audience

If you are going to use a graph in your presentation to compare data you should do the match for your audience. Do not make them do the calculations in their head because you will quickly lose their attention. For example, on slide number 5 the people at Sickweather lay out exactly what figures they want the audience to take from the slide.

82. Use unique colors for different sections

The example below has 145 slides but it does not feel overwhelming or confusing.

That’s because each section has a different corresponding color, which makes it easier to flip through the slide deck and find a particular part.

83. Give your presentation a catchy title that anyone can remember

What I really love about the presentation example above is that it features a catchy tagline on the second slide–“The 3S Framework.” It’s simple but it works!

This motto helps outline the structure of the presentation, and each slide referring back to it. Plus, the tagline will give the audience something to latch onto and remember from the presentation.

84. White backgrounds are not always bad

A lot of people think that plain white background is a boring presentation faux pas. So the first thing they do is add color or image, which is not a bad thing at all.

But I also think that when used correctly, like in this example, plain white backgrounds can lead to beautiful presentations.

85. Split the header text from the body text

This idea is very similar to the one-two punch tactic that I talked about above, but it spreads the content over two slides as opposed to a single slide.

Use this design choice when you have fairly easy to follow presentations, like the one below from Steve Young. I know that this is effective because it allows the audience to focus on the main point before he drives it home with the supporting details.

86. Feature circle image frames

I am a big fan of the design choices that Frank Delmelle uses in this slide deck about content strategy. He uses circles as his main design motif and frames his images in circles as well.

87. Talk directly to your audience

This slideshow tops out at 70 slides but it’s a breeze to flip through. That’s because the creator, Ian Lurie, decided to present it in the form of a conversation instead of a classic slide deck.

While each slide only has one or two sentences, it flows just like a friendly chat. He also includes the necessary pauses, breaks and other conversational tics that helps make it even more convincing.

88. Illustrated icons are key this year

In the presentation example above, Contently uses that exact tactic to bring more attention to key numbers.

90. Use a gradient as your presentation background

Just like bold color schemes, gradients are a current social media graphic design trend . They may feel retro to some, but I believe they will be around well into the future.

Gradients are perfect for presentation backgrounds because they are so versatile and eye-catching. I mean, you can literally create a gradient with any colors you can think of! And they look a lot more interesting than a simple flat background.

So embrace the future and use a gradient in your next presentation!

91. Track the steps in a process

In this example, the creators from O.C. Tanner add a very interesting feature to their slides, starting on slide number 6. If you take a look at this business presentation template, you will see that they number the steps in a process and track which step they’re on at the bottom of the slides.

92. Use mind blowing font pairings

The creator of this slide deck uses at least 10 different types of fonts. And it looks fantastic because they know that one font choice is boring. But this does not mean that you should use a bunch of random fonts–pick font pairs that play well together and keep your font choices for different types of information consistent throughout the presentation.

93. Make your ideas as obvious as possible

Your audience shouldn’t be guessing at what you mean. That is why I think that this presentation example from In a Rocket is so powerful because they make the information easy to digest.

Learning to code can be challenging, but they break the information down with simple diagrams and clear examples. Heck, I have not touched CSS in a few years and I could still follow what they were instructing.

94. Use images that will actually scale

A large mistake that you can make in your slide deck is using low-quality images. They may look great on your computer, but as soon as the slides are put up on a screen, the low quality will show. In this example by ThoughtWorks, all of their presentation background images look great and will scale well to a bigger screen. And that is even after the image compression that LinkedIn most likely does!

95. Take risks with your presentation layout

I honestly was blown away the first time I saw this presentation because it capitalized on such a risky design idea. The creators from Weekdone literally turned their presentation into an 8-Bit video game. A nd if you are looking for something that will stick with your audience, I would take a few creative cues from them!

96. Seriously, you better use memes

In this day and age memes are mainstream, so why wouldn’t you use them in a creative presentation? These do not have to be the coolest meme that all the hip kids are sharing, they can be some of the classics. Like the one that Dana DiTomaso uses on slide 16 to emphasize that it’s a trap!

97. Follow a clear design rhythm

I really like how this presentation introduced each new point in three or four steps, using the same design. It gave the presentation a rhythm that flowed almost like a song!

99. Give each slide its own spark

I know this goes against earlier points I had about creating a cohesive theme in your presentation layout, but everyone knows that rules are made to be broken (if you can do it better)!

100. Use LARGE header cards

An easy way to stick to that “one piece of content on each slide rule” is to use header cards. They are basically the header that you would normally use in a blog post or article, but it gets is own slide before the content. Here is an example of that idea in the real world in this presentation from Brian Downard.

101. Ask your audience questions

I think one of the most common elements I saw in all the slide decks was that they asked the audience questions. You can use questions to engage with your audience and get them thinking a bit harder about the topic. The Site By Norex team did an exceptional job of this when they explored what the topic of what makes up a brand.

102. Introduce yourself and your brand

I would say that a majority of presentations that I looked at in this list just jumped right into the content without an introduction to the author or brand in the actual slide deck.

I only saw this presentation idea used a few times throughout my research, but I believe it should be used a lot more. A table of contents will help the audience know what to expect and keep their focus throughout. Especially if you are creating a presentation that is a bit longer than normal.

Screenshots of a program or app are very common in any blog post, but I think you can do a little better when it comes to presentations.

Clip Art or Stock Image References

There are special requirements for using clip art and stock images in APA Style papers.

Common sources for stock images and clip art are iStock, Getty Images, Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Pixabay, and Flickr. Common sources for clip art are Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint.

The license associated with the clip art or stock image determines how it should be credited.

Sometimes the license indicates no reference or attribution is needed, in which case writers can reproduce the image without any reference, citation, or attribution in an APA Style paper.
Other times, the license indicates that credit is required to reproduce the image, in which case writers should write an APA Style copyright attribution and reference list entry.

Follow the terms of the license associated with the image you want to reproduce. The guidelines apply regardless of whether the image costs money to purchase or is available for free. The guidelines also apply to both students and professionals and to both papers and PowerPoint presentations.

Although for most images you must look at the license on a case-by-case basis, images and clip art from programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint can be used without attribution. By purchasing the program, you have purchased a license to use the clip art and images that come with the program without attribution.

1. Image with no attribution required

If the license associated with clip art or a stock image states “no attribution required,” then do not provide an APA Style reference, in-text citation, or copyright attribution.

For example, this image of a cat comes from Pixabay and has a license that says the image is free to reproduce with no attribution required. To use the image as a figure in an APA Style paper, provide a figure number and title and then the image. If desired, describe the image in a figure note. In a presentation (such as a PowerPoint presentation), the figure number, title, and note are optional.

2. Image that requires an attribution

If the license associated with clip art or a stock image says that attribution is required, then provide a copyright attribution in the figure note and a reference list entry for the image in the reference list. Many (but not all) images with Creative Commons licenses require attribution.

For example, this image of a sled dog comes from Flickr and has a Creative Commons license (specifically, CC BY 2.0). The license states that the image is free to use but attribution is required.

To use the image as a figure in an APA Style paper, provide a figure number and title and then the image. Below the image, provide a copyright attribution in the figure note. In a presentation, the figure number and title are optional but the note containing the copyright attribution is required.

The copyright attribution is used instead of an in-text citation. The copyright attribution consists of the same elements as the reference list entry, but in a different order (title, author, date, site name, URL), followed by the name of the Creative Commons License.

Using PACS for teaching radiology to undergraduate medical students

Traditional radiology education for medical students predominantly uses textbooks, PowerPoint files, and hard-copy radiographic images, which often lack student interaction. PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is a crucial tool for radiologists in viewing and reporting images, but its use in medical student training remains limited.

This study investigates the effectiveness of using PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) for teaching radiology to undergraduate medical students compared to traditional methods.

Fifty-three medical students were divided into a control group (25 students) receiving traditional slide-based training and an intervention group (28 students) using PACS software to view complete patient images. Pre- and post-course tests and satisfaction surveys were conducted for both groups, along with self-evaluation by the intervention group. The validity and reliability of the assessment tools were confirmed through expert review and pilot testing.

No significant difference was found between the control and intervention groups regarding, gender, age, and GPA. Final multiple-choice test scores were similar (intervention: 10.89 ± 2.9; control: 10.76 ± 3.5; p = 0.883). However, the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher improvement in the short answer test for image interpretation (intervention: 8.8 ± 2.28; control: 5.35 ± 2.39; p = 0.001). Satisfaction with the learning method did not significantly differ between groups (intervention: 36.54 ± 5.87; control: 39.44 ± 7.76; p = 0.129). The intervention group reported high familiarity with PACS capabilities (75%), CT principles (71.4%), interpretation (64.3%), appropriate window selection (75%), and anatomical relationships (85.7%).

PACS-based training enhances medical students’ diagnostic and analytical skills in radiology. Further research with larger sample sizes and robust assessment methods is recommended to confirm and expand upon theses results

Introduction

Radiology is a fundamental component in basic medical education, bridging the gap between anatomy and clinical practice. Like other fields of medical education, radiology education faces the challenge of transitioning from passive learning to interactive and experiential learning [ 1 , 2 ]. With the expansion of the field of radiology, radiology education has undergone a revolution. Doctors used to carry plain films and show them using projectors or view boxes because plain films were the only main diagnostic method in radiology during the 1970s. Since the introduction of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the late 1980s, the increase in the amount of image data associated with these imaging modalities has led to a greater demand for compatible information storage systems. Therefore, the picture archiving and communication system (PACS), capable of storing, retrieving, distributing, analyzing, and digitally processing medical images, has become an essential tool in clinical work today [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. However, due to hardware and software limitations, the use of PACS in radiology education remains somewhat limited [ 6 , 7 ]. Currently, most radiology education still relies heavily on textbooks and traditional computer media such as PowerPoint or Word files both of which lack student interaction. PACS offers advantages such as interactive image viewing, 3D reconstruction capabilities, and the ability to simulate real-life radiology practice, which traditional methods lack. These features enhance students’ understanding and interpretation of radiological images, addressing the shortcomings of conventional methods. There is a minimal probability for a medical student to see whole images like a real radiologist in class. It is often a challenge for them to understand 3D anatomical images, as well as a comprehensive view of diseases. Consequently, some students may attempt to independently identify abnormal findings and analyze and formulate radiological diagnoses. According to one study, only a limited number of final-year medical students had satisfactory basic radiology interpretation skills, which necessitates the search for a more effective method of training [ 8 ].

Recent advancements in radiology teaching methods have previously been reported in addition to face-to-face teaching, including problem-based learning (discussion of a case or scenario consistent with curriculum objectives and students’ independent research to complete subject knowledge and share findings), case-based learning (showing several radiographs of the same subject and discussing them), and team-based learning (student collaboration by creating learning groups) [ 8 ].

In contrast to these conventional methods, a new method was created under the concept of learning from experience. This virtual method is based on individual learning in the PACS software environment, enabling students in the role of radiologists to interpret and diagnose radiology in a simulation environment. All common items are shown to the student using PACS instead of selected specific images. Students are allowed to see the whole image, do basic reconstructions of the images freely, and find specific features of the image by themselves. During this process, students can access PACS and clinical information, integrating clinical knowledge and 3D reconstruction ability, essential to arriving at radiological diagnoses PACS enables efficient archiving and transfer of medical images. Initially developed in the U.S. in the 1980s, it later expanded to Europe and Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea [ 9 ]. Iran has also implemented PACS, improving its medical imaging infrastructure with global DICOM standards.

The goal of this learning method was to compare the effectiveness of practical radiology training through traditional face-to-face interactive lectures with the virtual practical radiology training method based on individual learning in the PACS software environment for medical students.

The use of PACS in healthcare in Iran has only recently become widespread, primarily for patient management and diagnosis, and is rarely used for educational purposes. Iran, as a country with a rapidly developing healthcare system, faces unique challenges in medical education. This study seeks to compare radiology education in Iran with existing literature and to understand its context in relation to the region and worldwide. Managing medical education effectively is a significant challenge. And this research addresses this by introducing innovative teaching methods. Specifically, current study investigates the effectiveness of using PACS on medical students radiology education compared to traditional methods.

The research population was the medical students of the Islamic Azad University of Mashhad during the academic year 2021–2022. The entry criteria were: being a medical trainee student, consent to enter the study, and the exclusion criteria were: students who had previously graduated in radiology or other medical sciences and students who had renewed their course in radiology. participation in the study was voluntary, and students were informed that it would not impact their end-of-section evaluation After obtaining informed consent, they participated in the study. Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Virtual University of medical sciences with the reference number [IR.VUMS.REC.1400.022]. This proposal was implemented after being approved by the ethics committee and obtaining the code of ethics.

Participants

The sample size was calculated using power analysis to ensure the study had sufficient power to detect a statistically significant difference between the control and intervention groups. Assuming an effect size of 0.5, a significance level (alpha) of 0.05, and a power of 0.80, it was determined that at least 50 participants were needed. To account for potential dropouts and ensure robustness, a total of 53 students were included in the study. According to the calculated sample size, four rotations of radiology internship students were included in the study for each of the control and intervention groups (each rotation is about 5–10 students). Due to the prevention of contamination, the first four rotations were assigned to the control group and the next four rotations to the intervention group.

The validity of the tools used in this study was established through expert review and pilot testing. Content validity was confirmed by 10 faculty members specializing in radiology. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s Alpha, yielding a coefficient of 0.91, indicating high internal consistency. In this study, three tools were used: measuring the level of knowledge, measuring the level of performance, and measuring the satisfaction of students in both groups (Appendix 1 ) and self-evaluation for PACS learning in the intervention group (Appendix 2 ). After one month of class, the final exam was taken which was a combination of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 short answer type questions (description and image recognition). The scores of the questions were collected as an objective assessment. To provide a subjective assessment of radiology learning, all students were invited to complete a satisfaction questionnaire on how radiology was taught. Also, the students of the intervention group were invited to complete a questionnaire for their self-evaluation of the amount of PACS learning. A 5-point Likert scale was used in both researcher-made questionnaires. The questionnaire used was created for this study. Informed consent was obtained from each patient whose data was used in the study, ensuring they were fully aware of how their medical images would be utilized for educational purposes.

Familiarization with PACS

Before starting the study with the PACS system, students were given an introductory session that covered the basics of PACS functionality, including how to navigate the software, view and manipulate images, and use the various tools available for image analysis.

Knowledge and performance measurement tools

In the knowledge section, questions evaluated theoretical content, and the performance section involved diagnosing radiographic image. Students described the type of radiography, pathological signs, and the final diagnosis. Multiple-choice questions and short answer questions were used to assess knowledge and performance The specific type of radiography used in this study included plain radiographs, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These imaging modalities were chosen to cover a broad spectrum of radiological techniques relevant to the medical curriculum. In the subject of knowledge, 20 multiple-choice questions were proposed based on the objectives of the lesson and the blueprint, which was approved by two colleagues of the radiology department, which must have been consistent with the objectives of the lesson. In the discussion of the performance of 5 of radiology images, which again corresponded to the objectives of the lesson and the blueprint, and it was approved by two colleagues of the radiology department that the objectives of the lesson were covered, they were provided to the students, and the students had to describe and diagnose the radiographies. The radiology images in both groups adequately covered the goals, but they were taught to the students in two different ways described.

Student satisfaction questionnaire

This questionnaire aimed to determine student’s satisfaction with the educational method. It consisted of ten questions graded on a 5-point Likert scale the range of scores was between 10 and 50 and higher scores indicating greater satisfaction. The content and form validity were confirmed by 10 faculty members and reliability was obtained by Cronbach’s Alpha test of 0.91.

Student self-assessment questionnaire

This questionnaire evaluated the learning rate of the PACS teaching method. It consisted of twelve questions graded on a 5-point Likert scale, and the range of scores was between 12 and 60, and higher scores indicate learning. Content and form validity were confirmed by 10 faculty members and reliability was assessed with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.91.

Implementation method in the control group

The teaching strategy involved traditional face-to-face interactive lectures using PowerPoint presentations. The practical part included demonstrating selected radiographic images on slides and discussing their interpretation.

This method aimed to develop the student’s ability to diagnose and interpret radiographs through structured lectures and guided discussions. A pre-test was conducted in the first session to determine the student’s initial knowledge and performance levels. The classes were held daily in person. After teaching the theoretical part with a PowerPoint presentation, radiographic images were shown to the control group for interpretation and discussion. This conventional method aimed to develop the ability to diagnose and interpret radiographs. The post-test to determine knowledge and performance was performed and the education satisfaction questionnaire was completed at the end of each rotation.

Bias caused by human factors during the teaching of the two groups was controlled by standardizing the teaching materials and methods across both groups. Additionally, the instructors were blinded to the group assignments to prevent any conscious or unconscious bias in teaching and assessment.

Implementation method in the intervention group

The stages of developing the training course using PACS software and DICOM were as follows: 1). Initial planning and curriculum alignment, 2) Selection of relevant radiographic cases, 3) Configuration of PACS workstations, 4) Training faculty on PACS software, and 5) Implementation of PACS-based learning sessions for students, followed by assessment and feedback.

After the control group, the rotations of the intervention group were included in the study, and the pre-test was administered to the students of the intervention group. Assessment of knowledge with multiple choice questions and performance with radiographic images was with short answer questions. The classes were held daily in person. In the intervention group, after participating in the theoretical part of the course, which was similar to the control group and was held face-to-face, for the practical part, they were trained in a virtual way with Adobe Connect software, and there was no face-to-face class for radiography images. In this way, students were given access to PACS Radiant software (installation on personal desktop). Following the teaching of the theoretical part, based on the goals of the radiology course for medical trainees, a number of images of the brain, lungs, bones, urinary tract, and digestive system (including radiography, CT and MRI) were assigned to the students of the intervention group, and the images of these patients were completely at their disposal.

The computers used were personal desktops with standardized configurations. Adjustments and calibrations were made to ensure all students could view images with consistent quality and brightness, replicating the clinical environment as closely as possible. This software enables students to perform basic operations with images, such as windowing, comparing different MRI sequences, and performing cross-sectional reconstruction (MPR) or 3D reconstruction, exactly as a radiologist does and has the facilities. After studying the material and checking the images, the students were required to announce the completion of their study to the teacher and they were given the opportunity to review the pictures, ask questions, and solve problems with the teacher in the virtual space.

The post-test to determine knowledge and performance was performed in the intervention group. The education satisfaction questionnaire was completed at the end of each rotation. The self-assessment questionnaire for PACS learning was completed at the end of each rotation.

Data analysis

The data was analyzed with SPSS-17 software, IBM, US. Central and dispersion indices were used in the descriptive statistics report, and a T-test was used in the analytical section, independent t-test, paired t-test and, chi-square test were used to compare the data. The confidence level was set at p < 0.05.

A total of 52 students entered this study, 28 students in the intervention group and 25 in the control group. The students were similar in terms of age, gender, and overall academic average ( p = 0.05) (Table 1 ). The average age in the control group is 26.04 ± 3.96 and in the intervention group is 24.29 ± 2.14. The result of the independent t-test shows that the average age in the two groups is not different ( P = 0.060). The average overall academic grade point average of the medical course in the control group is 15.73 and in the intervention group is 16.01, which has no difference ( P = 0.383) (Table 1 ).

The control group included 25 people, 16 of whom were women and 9 of whom were men, and the intervention group included 28 people of whom 16 were women and 12 were men. The result of the chi-square test shows that the two groups do not differ in terms of gender ( P = 0.610). Evaluation result: At the beginning of the exam, there were two parts of a multiple-choice test and a short answer for the interpretation of radiology images (pre-test). The same exam was done twice at the end of the one-month session (post-test). It was a multiple-choice test to check knowledge and a short answer test to check performance.

The result of the independent t-test shows that the score of the multiple-choice test before and after the intervention, as well as the changes in the test score, are not different in the two groups. ( P = 0.084, P = 0.883, P = 0.764) The result of the paired t-test shows that the multiple-choice test scores of the students before and after the intervention differ between the case and control groups, and it is higher after the intervention. ( P < 0.001, P < 0.001) (Table 2 ) The result of the independent t-test shows that the score of the student’s short answer test, which was for the interpretation of radiology images, is not different before and after the intervention ( P = 0.002 and P = 0.444, respectively). The changes in the test scores are different in the two groups and are more in the intervention group. ( P < 0.001) The result of the paired t-test shows that the score of the short answer test of the students before and after the intervention is different according to the case and control groups, and it is higher after the intervention. ( P < 0.001, P < 0.001)

The result of the independent t-test shows that there is no difference in the level of satisfaction with the teaching method between the two control groups with a score of 39.44 ± 7.76 and the intervention group with a score of 36.54 ± 5. ( P = 0.129) (Table 3 ).

The analysis of the satisfaction questionnaire in the intervention group showed that most students were satisfied with the organization (64%) and interaction of the learning activity (64%) (Table 3 ). Most students use this learning activity to learn radiology (85%). They found it useful. More importantly, a large percentage of students stated that PACS training encouraged personal interest in radiology (82%) as well as satisfaction with the quality of learning (71%). Also, in the intervention group, based on the self-evaluation form, they stated that with the abilities of PACS (75%), the principles of CT (71.4%) and its interpretation (64.3%), choosing the appropriate window (75%), the location of different organs in the image (82.9%) and their vicinity (85.7%) are familiar (Table 3 ). An evaluation of the impact of the intervention on participants’ knowledge is included, showing significant improvements in their understanding and diagnostic skills, highlighting the effectiveness of the PACS-based training method.

Traditional practical radiology training that continues to be used today provides only a cross-section of the entire routine imaging. While this teaching method may be useful in helping students manage the features of routine imaging, it may be inadequate for learning anatomy [ 10 ]. Hence, students may have difficulty interpreting images independently during clinical practice when they are expected to do so [ 11 ]. Although a variety of radiology educational models such as problem-based learning and the use of dynamic images can solve part of this problem, images of the main workplace are the most ideal learning method [ 12 , 13 ]. The experiential learning theory, developed by Dewey, Kolb and others provide explanations for how students learn things in their own way as they react to their perceptions of a real experiences. This concept is explained by principle of constructionism, which is the base of experiential learning [ 13 ].

During this study, a training course using PACS software and DICOM viewer was developed to simulate a work environment that reflects the typical clinical work of a radiologist. The results of the study indicated that this educational approach allows for better clinical guidance, which is necessary to help students form a holistic view of anatomy and pathology. Most importantly, this educational method helps students to develop critical thinking and a systematic approach to formulating imaging interpretation and differential diagnosis, which may be partially due to the exploratory atmosphere of the experiential learning mode. Apart from the objective improvement in imaging descriptions and interpretations, subjective improvements in self-confidence from students’ feedback to self-assessment questionnaires, as well as skills including determining the order of imaging reading, choosing the appropriate window, and also choosing the reconstruction method, which may result under the influence of direct activity during The course of learning and discussion should be free. In addition, the experiential approach allows for better interactions that increase interest in radiology [ 14 ].

To provide students with access to the Radiant PACS software (installed on their personal desktops), following the theoretical section and based on the objectives of the radiology course for medical trainees, a number of images from the brain, lungs, bones, urinary, and gastrointestinal systems (including radiography, CT, MRI) were assigned to the intervention group. These patient images were fully available to them. This software enables students to perform basic operations on images, such as window adjustment, comparing different MRI sequences, and performing multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) or 3D reconstruction, exactly as a radiologist does within the PACS system.

To resolve the issue of patient confidentiality, all patient identifiers were removed from the images before they were made accessible to students. Additionally, access to PACS was restricted to ensure that students could only view and analyze the images without accessing sensitive patient information.

Undergraduate students had limited access to PACS, ensuring they could not modify or delete any content. Additional software controls were implemented to restrict access and prevent any unauthorized changes. This ensured that the integrity of the medical images was maintained, and patient care data was not compromised.

Our study shows the effectiveness of PACS in training in the study of anatomical imaging. Anatomy is the basis of radiology training. In theory, reading CT and MRI images is a good way to study anatomy because continuous scanning helps students understand the three-dimensional concepts of the relative adjacencies of body parts [ 15 , 16 ]. Globally, they concluded that anatomical imaging increases the quality and efficiency of teaching human anatomy [ 17 ]. However, it is difficult to discern the entire anatomical structure from a single cross-section of the image, which increases students’ confusion [ 16 ]. The results of this study provide evidence that continuous scan reading improves students’ comprehensive understanding of anatomy. Furthermore, by using multiple reconstruction methods, 3D images are more comprehensively examined by students, which has been confirmed by other studies [ 18 ].

The integration of PACS in medical education has been shown to enhance the learning experience by providing students with interactive and practical tools for understanding radiological images. Recent advancements in healthcare technology acceptance highlight the importance of user-friendly interfaces and training for successful implementation [ 19 ]. Moreover, the current state of medical education in the UK emphasizes the adoption of advanced technologies like PACS to improve educational outcomes and prepare students for real-world clinical environments [ 20 ]. The utilization of big data technologies in conjunction with PACS further enhances the management and analysis of medical images, facilitating a more personalized and effective learning experience for medical students [ 21 ]. Additionally, recent market reports indicate a steady growth in the adoption of medical imaging technologies, including PACS, driven by advancements in AI and machine learning, which are poised to revolutionize medical education [ 22 ]. These developments collectively underscore the critical role of PACS in modernizing medical education and improving the quality of training for future healthcare professionals. Also, the implementation of PACS could significantly enhance radiology education by providing access to digital imaging resources that may otherwise be unavailable.

Compared to Chen et al.‘s study [ 1 ], the study was conducted on 101 students, but our study was on 52 students. Satisfaction with PACS training in Chen’s study was on average 80% and in our study, it was about 65%. The percentage of being interested in radiology in this study and Chen’s study was almost similar. Also, in our study, similar to Chen’s study, there was no difference in pre-test scores between the two intervention and control groups. Also, the final scores in Chen’s study and our study were not significantly different, but the scores of interpretations of pictures, which in our study were equivalent to a number of stereotypes in the form of PowerPoint with short answer questions, showed a significant difference in both our study and Chen’s study.

In the study of Restauri [ 6 ] and Soman [ 23 ], as in our study, PACS was used to teach medical students, and at the end of the course, only a survey form was filled by the students, and the impact of using PACS on the ability to interpret radiology images by students was not done. In the above two studies, after using PACS, students stated that they gained more confidence on interpreting images and would use PACS in the future, which was similar to the survey results in our study. It takes a lot of effort to do this kind of training. PACS and a suitable DICOM viewer represent basic software requirements for training and to protect patient privacy, DICOM data from PACS rather than linking to the original PACS. Copied In this way, a PACS simulation for medical education was obtained [ 6 ]. In addition, teacher guidance is a vital element in education. A minimum of 3 instructors with experience in standard radiology training is required for a class, as team discussion is a major component of the training. In experimental courses, students need educational help both to guide reading the picture and to answer the questions. Therefore, teaching professors need specific work experience in the radiology department. Having said that, the lack of a radiology professor prevents the use of this training and this training model acts as a limitation on a larger scale. There are several limitations to the study. First, due to the limited number of supervisors, the sample size was correspondingly limited. Secondly, it was a single study center. Thirdly, due to the limitation of the operation, some students did not answer some of the questions in the questionnaire. Although the probability is very low, it still has the chance to bias the result. Fourth, although we control for faculty and teaching standards between the two groups, human bias is still a factor that cannot be completely avoided in practice. Fifth, although we used objective assessment measures, the study also revealed the weakness of our assessment system in radiology education. The study instrument consisted of paper and pencil tests, with most questions consisting of objective items that test memory, such as multiple-choice questions and short answer questions. Furthermore, the mental items used to test application ability are limited. As a result, only a small part of the final test reflects the difference between the experimental training group and the control group. Other test forms such as bedside examinations and multi-station examinations should be used in the future for better evaluation [ 24 , 25 ]. In this study, according to the curriculum, students entered the radiology department with different numbers during different periods, and 4 periods of students were entered into the study for each group. The exams were held at the end of the one-month section, so the exam was held in the control group and in the intervention group at different times, although we tried to make the questions the same in terms of number and content similarity. In the study of Chen et al [ 8 ], the test was conducted at the end of the semester and simultaneously for two groups. If this study is conducted with a larger number of students and in multiple centers, the results will be more valid.

PACS-based training is beneficial for medical students, enhancing their diagnostic and analytical skills in radiology. Further research with larger sample sizes and robust assessment methods is recommended to confirm and expand upon theses results. We believe that our findings suggest that PACS which is used routinely in healthcare diagnostic context, can also be used in medical students’ education and healthcare can be integrated in education.
