रिव्यू - 'गांधी-गोडसे: एक युद्ध'

फ़िल्म के आख़िरी सीन को छोड़ दें, तो गांधी पूरी फ़िल्म में एक 'बिगर पर्सन' ही दिखते हैं..

सबसे पहले एक तस्वीर देखिए. 

ये तस्वीर हमारे साथी अनुभव ने खींची है. जगह: इंडियन कॉफ़ी हाउस, इलाहाबाद. जब से ये इमारत है, तब इलाहाबाद ही था. एक पुरानी दरकती इमारत, जो कभी उत्तर भारत में राजनीति और साहित्य का केंद्र हुआ करती थी. नेहरू के ज़माने में, फ़िराक़ के ज़माने में, हरिवंश राय बच्चन के ज़माने में. तीनों ही गांधीवादी थे. इस देश में सबके अपने गांधी हैं. किसी के लिए 'राष्ट्रपिता', किसी के लिए 'बंटवारे का ज़िम्मेदार'. अनुभव के भी अपने गांधी हैं. और, राजकुमार संतोषी के भी. 'गांधी-गोडसे: एक युद्ध' वाले गांधी. राजकुमार संतोषी ने इस फ़िल्म के ट्रेलर लॉन्च में कहा था कि वो 9 साल बाद आ रहे हैं, ये ज़रूरी नहीं है. क्या लेकर आ रहे हैं, ये ज़रूरी है. हमने उनकी पिक्चर देख ली. क्या लाए हैं, ये बताते हैं.

फ़िल्म में उतरने से पहले: वक़्त के हिसाब से, फ़िल्म कुछ-एक से ज़्यादा लोगों को आहत कर सकती है. लेकिन ये एक ज़रूरी फ़िल्म है, जो संवाद में सिंसयर भरोसा रखती है.

मेरे जीवन में गांधी कैसे आए? 2 अक्टूबर की छुट्टी से. स्कूल की किताबों से. दफ़्तरों की दीवार पर टंकी तस्वीरों से. चौराहों पर लगी मूर्तियों से. रुपए के नोट से. निबंध और भाषण के विषयों से. 'लगे रहो मुन्ना भाई' से. वॉट्सऐप और यूट्यूब से. सत्य के साथ उनके प्रयोग से. इधर-उधर के लेखों से. और, ट्विटर से. ठीक इसी क्रम में. जितने आए, वो ये कि एक दमदार बूढ़ा आदमी है. जिसे लोग 'महात्मा' कहते हैं, क्योंकि उसे मनुष्य कहने से झेंपते हैं. वो हठी है; ग़लती करता है. ग़लतियां स्वीकारता है. अपने विचारों पर दृढ़ है, लेकिन खुलता रहता है. पक्का वैष्णव है. पढ़ा-लिखा व्यक्ति है. कभी वकील रहा. उतना 'भोला' है नहीं, जितना समझा जाता है.

राजकुमार संतोषी को भी कुछ-कुछ ऐसा ही लगा. उन्होंने गांधी को बख़्शा नहीं है. उन्हें 'राष्ट्रपिता' होने का प्रिवलेज नहीं दिया. न गोडसे के पक्ष में रहने का प्रयास किया, न गांधी के. मुद्दे को डॉयकॉटमी या द्विधाकरण में नहीं ले गए. दो विचारों का आमना-सामना करवाया है.

30 जनवरी 1948. नाथुराम गोडसे ने महात्मा गांधी की हत्या कर दी थी. 75 साल बाद इसी दिन के चार दिन पहले ये फ़िल्म आई है. 

फ़िल्म का कॉन्सेप्ट बेजोड़ लगा. मैंने ट्रेलर नहीं देखा था, तो प्रयोग के लिहाज से मेकर्स का काल्पनिक विस्तार ग़ज़ब लगा. अगर गांधी गोडसे की गोलियों से ज़िंदा बच जाते, तो क्या होता? क्या करते? कांग्रेस के साथ क्या करते? सरकार के प्रति उनका क्या रुख रहता? अपने हत्यारे नाथुराम गोडसे से बात की होती, तो क्या बात होती? फ़िल्म ने इन सब सवालों के जवाब खोजने की कोशिश की है. हो सकता है कुछ जगहों पर आप उनकी कल्पना से इत्तेफ़ाक़ न रखें, मगर कल्पना की ख़ूबसूरती यही है. कुछ भी सोच सकते हैं.

जब उस सोच पर फ़िल्म बनानी हो, तो मेकर्स उस सोच को पॉलिश करते हैं. एक नैरेटिव देते हैं. 'यूं होता तो क्या होता' पुराना शगल है. लेकिन इसमें हमेशा ही रिस्क रहता है, कि आप किसी की तरफ़ दिखने लगते हैं. मेकर्स ने प्रयास किया है कि इससे बचें. फ़िल्म के आख़िरी सीन को छोड़ दें, तो गांधी पूरी फ़िल्म में एक 'बिगर पर्सन' ही दिखते हैं.

वैसे इस सोच का पूरा क्रेडिट जाता है प्ले-राइट और स्क्रीन-राइटर असग़र वजाहत को, जिनके नाटक पर ये फ़िल्म बनी है. असग़र वजाहत ने ख़ुद इस फ़िल्म में डॉयलॉग्स लिखे हैं. राजकुमार संतोषी के साथ.

फ़िल्म की बेस-लाइन ये है कि गांधी से जुड़े सारे कंटेंपरेरी आरोपों और बहसों को अड्रेस किया जाए. मसलन, गांधी का बोस के लिए क्या रवैया था? नेहरू और पटेल के बारे में क्या सोचते थे? बंटवारा किसने करवाया? अखंड भारत पर क्या सोचते थे? कुल मिलाकर बात ये कि पिछले कुछ सालों में वॉट्सऐप पर जो भी आरोप लगे, गांधी उससे कैसे डील करते?

गोडसे को एक अडिग हिंदू का ही रोल दिया गया है. उसके अपने विचार थे. उसने इंपल्स में गोली नहीं चलाई थी. वो समझता था कि उसका क़दम देशहित में है. उसे लगता था कि गांधी ओवर-रेटेड हैं. देश को अपनी सोच पर चला रहे हैं, किसी की नहीं सुनते, सबसे ऊपर हैं. ये भी सोचता था कि केवल कॉन्ग्रेस और गांधी ने देश को आज़ादी नहीं दिलाई. भगत सिंह, चंद्रशेखर आज़ाद जैसे कई लोगों ने क़ुरबानी दी; गोली खाई.

तब भी गांधी को हिंदू विरोधी, अंग्रेज़ों का एजेंट, मुसलमान प्रेमी और बंटवारे का ज़िम्मेदार कहा जाता था. तब भी ऐसी बातें होती थीं की गांधी ने अहिंसा और चरखे में उलझा दिया है. गर्म दल को समर्थन मिलता, तो 20 साल पहले ही आज़ादी मिल जाती. और, गांधी को इन सवालों के साथ कनफ़्रंट किया गया है.

फ़िल्म के संवाद अनुपम हैं. लिखाई की नज़र से नहीं, मुद्दे की नज़र से. गांधी और गोडसे का एक संवाद है, जिसमें गोडसे उन्हें अखंड भारत का नक्शा दिखाता है और कहता है कि उसका सपना है अखंड भारत. गांधी मुस्कुरा के पूछते हैं, "तुमने इस नक्शे में तिब्बत, बर्मा और अफ़ग़ानिस्तान को भी शामिल कर लिया है. तुम कभी वहां गए हो? क्या उनकी संस्कृति के बारे में जानते हो?" गोडसे चुप हो जाता है. क्यों भाई, जानते हो?

ख़ैर. फ़िल्म में गांधी और उनके कांग्रेस से मोहभंग की बात भी बताई गई है. गांधी ने अपने जीते जी कांग्रेस को भंग करने की बात कही थी. उनका मत था कि कांग्रेस स्वतंत्रता के लिए एक खुला मंच था, अब इसके नाम पर लोगों से वोट मांगना ठीक नहीं है. एक संवाद में गांधी कहते हैं:

"सरकारें सेवा नहीं करतीं. केवल हुक़ूमत करती हैं."

साइकोलॉजी में एक पुरानी पंक्ति चलती है - 'पावर करप्ट्स'. यानी ताक़त का बेसिक नेचर है कि वो आपको भ्रष्ट कर देती है. गांधी प्रतीक हैं कि असीम ताक़त होने के बावजूद उसे एक्सप्लॉइट करने की कोई वजह नहीं हो सकती. उस व्यक्ति के एक इशारे पर सरकार बन सकती थी, गिर सकती थी. अगर वो अपनी सरकार से ही तन जाते, तो एक और जनांदोलन हो जाता. लेकिन उन्होंने किसी पर एक पत्थर नहीं चलाया. किसी पर हाथ नहीं उठाया.

फ़िल्म में गांधी और गोडसे, दोनों को खुलते हुए दिखाया गया है. कैसे वो दोनों एक-दूसरे की सोहबत में रहकर कुछ-कुछ बदले. केवल गोडसे नहीं, गांधी भी.

सिनमैट का काम अव्वल है. कैमरे का काम फ़िल्म के नैरेटिव के साथ घुला हुआ लगता है. एकाध शॉट्स बहुत ही बारीक़ी से बनाए गए हैं.

ऐक्टर्स की बात देर से हो रही है, इसके लिए माफ़ी. मगर विषय को तवज्जो देना ज़रूरी थी. गांधी के रोल में दीपक आंतनी का काम जानदार है. ख़ैर, गांधी का रोल प्ले करने में वो पारंगत हैं. पहले भी कई प्रोजेक्ट्स में उन्होंने गांधी का रोल किया है. वो मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी के नुआंसेज़ पकड़ते हैं. गोडसे का किरदार किया है चिन्मय मांडेलकर ने. माने हुए ऐक्टर हैं. पहले भी अच्छा काम किया है, और इस रोल के साथ भी जस्टिस करते हैं. बाक़ी कैबिनेट ने भी अपना योगदान कैबिनेट-नुमा ही दिया है.

दो-एक सीन बहुत ही ज़रूरी हैं. जैसे कैबिनेट सहित गांधी कुछ रजवाड़ों से मिलने आते हैं. स्वाभाविक है कि क़ानून मंत्री बाबा साहेब भी आए थे. उनका संवाद तो दमदार है ही, जाने के बाद वो रजवाड़े अपने घर में हवन करवाते हैं. जातिवाद की तब की स्थिति को दिखाने का बहुत सटल प्रयास है. और, आपको स्पून-फ़ीड नहीं किया जाता कि देखो, आम्बेडकर आए थे, इसलिए शुद्धी हवन हो रहा है. वो नेपथ्य में है, लेकिन साफ़-साफ़ दिख रहा है.

फ़िल्म का आख़िरी सीन सांकेतिक तौर पर बहुत अच्छा हो सकता है, लेकिन मैं उससे इत्तेफ़ाक़ नहीं रखता. चाहते-न चाहते उसमें गांधी और गोडसे को सम पर ला दिया गया है. जिससे मेरी असहमति है. आपकी नहीं भी हो सकती है.

Gandhi godse ek yudh public review in hindi: 9 साल के लंबे इंतजार के बाद दिग्गज फिल्म मेकर राजकुमार संतोषी फिल्म 'गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध' की रिलीज के साथ वापसी कर चुके हैं. फिल्म में महात्मा गांधी और नाथूराम गोडसे के बीच वैचारिक युद्ध को दिखाया गया है. आइए जानते हैं कि फिल्म लोगों को कैसी लगी., होम -> सिनेमा.

'पुकार', 'बरसात', 'दामिनी', 'घायल', 'अंदाज अपना अपना', 'लज्जा', 'खाकी', 'चाइना गेट' और 'अजब प्रेम की गजब कहानी' जैसी फिल्में बनाने वाले फिल्म मेकर राजकुमार संतोषी 9 साल के लंबे इंतजार के बाद वापसी कर चुके हैं. उनकी नई फिल्म 'गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध' सिनेमाघरों में रिलीज हो चुकी है. बॉक्स ऑफिस पर शाहरुख खान की 'पठान' की आंधी के बीच ये फिल्म आर्थिक मोर्चे पर संघर्ष करने के साथ ही समीक्षा के स्तर पर भी औसत नजर आ रही है. इस फिल्म की रिलीज से पहले इसे लेकर बहुत ज्यादा चर्चा थी. फिल्म के टीजर और ट्रेलर को देखने के बाद कुछ लोगों को लगा कि इसमें महात्मा गांधी को नाथूराम गोडसे के आगे नीचा दिखाया गया है. वहीं कुछ अन्य लोगों को लगा कि इसमें नाथूराम गोडसे का महिमामंडन किया गया है. लेकिन रिलीज के बाद लोगों को पता चला कि इसमें ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है, जो कि लोगों ने सोचा था.

फिल्म की कहानी में कल्पना का समावेश है. इसका सच्चाई से बहुत ज्यादा संबंध भी नहीं है. बस किरदार असली हैं, लेकिन उनके आसपास जो परिस्थिति बुनी गई है, वो बस एक सोच है. यदि ऐसा होता तो क्या होता, यदि वैसा होता तो क्या होता. उदाहरण के लिए यदि गांधी जिंदा होते और उनको पता होता कि गोडसे उनको मारने की योजना बना रहे हैं. ऐसी स्थिति में दोनों एक-दूसरे के सामने होते तो क्या-क्या बात करते. उनके विचार क्या होते. दोनों के बीच किस तरह का वैचारिक अंतर था. पूरी फिल्म लगभग इसी पर बात हुई है. फिल्म की कहानी राजकुमार संतोषी और असगर वजाहत ने लिखी है. इससे पहले भी दोनों ने कई फिल्मों के लिए एक साथ काम किया है. फिल्म में दीपक अंतानी, चिन्मय मंडलेकर, तनीषा संतोषी और अनुज सैनी लीड रोल में हैं. दीपक अंतानी ने महात्मा गांधी, तो चिन्मय मंडलेकर नाथूराम गोडसे का किरदार किया है.

फिल्म 'गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध' को लेकर समीक्षकों और दर्शकों को मिली जुली प्रतिक्रिया देखने को मिल रही है. हालांकि, ज्यादातर लोग इसे औसत दर्जे की फिल्म बता रहे हैं. कुछ लोगों का मानना है कि यदि ये फिल्म पठान के साथ रिलीज न होती, तो शायद इसे ज्यादा हाईप मिल सकता था. सोशल मीडिया पर ज्यादातर लोग फिल्म के कलाकारों के अभिनय की तारीफ कर रहे हैं. ट्विटर पर मनीष त्रिवेदी ने लिखा है, ''यदि आप अच्छी फिल्म देखना चाहते हैं तो 'गांधी-गोडसे एक युद्ध' जरूर देखें. फिल्म राजकुमार संतोषी ने बनाई है और संगीत दिया है एआर रहमान ने. बेहतरीन अदाकारी आपका दिल जीत लेगी.'' मृणाल केजे लिखते हैं, ''दीपक अंतानी ने गांधी के किरादर में गजब का अभिनय किया है. राजकुमार संतोषी ने शानदार निर्देशन किया है. फिल्म का कॉन्सेप्ट मुझे बहुत बढ़िया लगा है. इस तरह की फिल्में ज्यादातर हॉलीवुड में बनती रही हैं.''

राहुल शिंदे लिखते हैं, ''फिल्म 'गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध' का एक लाइन में यही रिव्यू है कि ये पूरी तरह झूठ और प्रोपेगैंडा पर आधारित है. एक तरफा फेक नैरेटिव है. मैं आशा करता हूं कि बहुत जल्द गांधी और गोडसे पर आधारित एक ईमानदार फिल्म देखने को मिलेगी.'' जितेंद्र प्रताप सिंह ने लिखा है कि फिल्म कहानी, पटकथा और संवाद बेहद कमजोर हैं. कलाकारों ने ओवरएक्टिंग की है. कुछ सीन अच्छे लगे हैं लेकिन फिल्म का ज्यादातर हिस्सा खींचा हुआ बोरिंग लगता है. बहुत ही खराब संपादन और निर्देशन फिल्म को औसत से नीचे पहुंचा देता है. ट्विटर पर एक यूजर गुरविंदर सिंह का कहना है कि राजकुमार संतोषी की सियासी फिल्म बेअसर रही है. उनके खराब निर्देशन की वजह से दीपक अंतानी और चिन्मय मंडलेकर की मेहनत पर पानी फिर गया है. महात्मा गांधी और नाथूराम गोडसे के बीच वैचारिक युद्ध बहुत सरल और उपदेशात्मक है.

गूगल मूवी रिव्यू में पल्लव अंजारिया ने फिलम को 5 में से 5 स्टार देते हुए लिखा है, ''मुझे ऑफबीट सिनेमा हमेशा से पसंद रहा है. गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध एक शानदार विचार पर बनी फिल्म है, जो कि भले ही यह एक कल्पना है, लेकिन वास्तव में राजकुमार संतोषी की महान सोच है. गांधी का किरदार निभाने वाले दीपक अंतानी वास्तविक लगे हैं. उन्होंने जिस तरह से सूक्ष्म स्तर पर काम किया है वह असाधारण है. गांधी जी के चलने, बोलने, बैठने, बोलने, उच्चारण करने, वाणी में उतार-चढ़ाव सब कुछ काबिले तारीफ है. गोडसे के किरदार में चिन्मय ने भी शानदार काम किया है. ऐसी भूमिका को स्वीकार करना अपने आप में एक चुनौती है. उन्होंने वास्तव में एक विरोधी के रूप में उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन किया है. हो सकता है कि ये फिल्म व्यावसायिक रूप से सफल न हो, लेकिन फिर भी यह बॉलीवुड के इतिहास पर अपनी छाप जरूर छोड़कर जाएगी.''

क्रांथि शंकू ने फिल्म को 5 में से 3 स्टार देते हुए लिखा है, ''फिल्म की रिलीज से पहले कहा गया कि इसे मोदी समर्थक और बीजेपी द्वारा प्रमोट किया जा रहा है, जबकि फिल्म देखने के बाद लोगों को सच्चाई का पता चलेगा. हमें गांधी के बारे में बहुत कुछ सिखाया और बताया गया है. अनावश्यक रूप से उनके तथाकथित अच्छे कार्यों का महिमामंडन किया गया है, जबकि उनके कई निर्णयों के बारे में कभी बात नहीं की जाती है, जिन्होंने देश को सदमें में छोड़ दिया. किसी व्यक्ति के सामने दिखने वाले कृत्य से उसे शर्मिंदा करना लोगों के लिए इतना आसान होता है. गोडसे इसका सबसे अच्छा उदाहरण और सबसे बुरा शिकार है. यह एक बहुप्रतीक्षित फिल्म थी जिसने गांधी के सभी अंधभक्तों के सामने सच्चाई लाने की कोशिश की, जो इतने मूर्ख थे कि उन्होंने नेहरू को अपना पहला प्रधानमंत्री बनाया और भारत को एक बड़ी विफलता के लिए खड़ा कर दिया.''

अमर उजाला में मेघा चौधरी ने राजकुमार संतोषी की फिल्म को बेअसर बताया है. उनकी वजह से दीपक अंतानी और चिन्मय मंडलेकर की मेहनत पर पानी भी फिर गया है. मेघा लिखती हैं, ''गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध पूरी तरह से गांधी और गोडसे की बातचीत पर आधरित है. इस फिल्म में यह बताने की कोशिश की गई है कि यदि गांधी से गोडसे की पहले मुलाकात हुई होती तो शायद वह गांधी को नहीं मारते. फिल्म चूंकि संवादों पर ही पूरी तरह आधारित है तो ये फिल्म न लगकर पूरे समय दो लोगों का संवाद ही रहती है. संतोषी इसके लिए कलाकारों का चयन अपने हिसाब से बहुत सही किया है, लेकिन चूंकि दोनों चेहरे हिंदी सिनेमा के लिए अनजाने हैं, लिहाजा वे दर्शकों का ध्यान खींच पाने में विफल हैं. गांधी की भूमिका में दीपक अंतानी ने बढ़िया काम किया है. गोडसे की भूमिका में चिन्मय भी पूरी तरह से फिट हैं. बस दिक्कत दोनों के साथ एक ही है कि वह सिनेमाई करिश्मा नहीं रखते हैं. बड़े परदे पर संतोषी की वापसी प्रभाव नहीं रही है. वह अब भी 'द लीजेंड ऑफ भगत सिंह' वाले समयकाल में ही अटके हैं.''

नवभारत टाइम्स में धवल रॉव 'गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध' को देखने लायक फिल्म बता रहे हैं. वो लिखते हैं, ''फिल्म में गांधी और गोडसे का युद्ध शब्दों से चल रहा है. दोनों अपनी अपनी विचारधारा और एक्शन पर बात करते हैं. लेकिन ये शब्दों का खेल कमजोर सा लगता है. अभिनय की बात करें तो दीपक अंतानी और चिन्मय मंडलेकर ने गांधी और गोडसे के किरदारों के साथ न्याय किया है. इनका उच्चारण भी जंचता है. इनके अलावा जवाहर लाल नेहरू की भूमिका में पवन चोपड़ा, बाबसाहेब अंबेडकर, मौलाना आजाद, सरदार पटेल (घनश्याम श्रीवास्तव) के किरदारों में सभी कलाकारों ने फिल्म में अपना योगदान ठीक ठाक दिया है. राजकुमार संतोषी इस ड्रामा पर ग्रिप ठीक बनाते हैं. निर्देशन में कई बार उतार चढ़ाव देखने को मिलते हैं. लेकिन फिल्म का ट्रीटमेंट, ऋषि पंजाबी की सिनेमैटोग्राफी, लाइट प्ले और मैक्रो वीडियोग्राफी ठीक लगती है.''

राजकुमार संतोषी की फिल्म गांधी गोडसे- एक युद्ध बड़े पर्दे पर रिलीज हो चुकी है. महात्मा गांधी की पुण्यतिथि से महज चार दिन पहले रिलीज हुई ये फिल्म उनके बारें में हर दिन ‘व्हाट्सअप फॉरवर्ड’ के जरिए वायरल होने वाली अफवाहों पर ब्रेक लगाते हुए दर्शकों के सामने हकीकत प्रस्तुत करने की कोशिश करती है. इस फिल्म के साथ राजकुमार संतोषी ने 9 साल बाद बॉक्स ऑफिस पर कमबैक किया है.

जानिए क्या है कहानी

30 जनवरी 1948 को नाथुराम गोडसे ने महात्मा गांधी को तीन गोलियां मारीं थीं, जिसके बाद गांधी जी ने इस दुनिया को हमेशा के लिए अलविदा कह दिया था. इस फिल्म की कहानी में निर्देशक ने इस घटना के बाद की काल्पनिक दुनिया ऑडियंस के सामने पेश की है. फिल्म में दिखाया गया है कि गांधी गोडसे की गोलियों से बच जाते हैं, गोडसे को गिरफ्तार किया जाता है.

गांधी बचने के बाद खुद को गोली मारने वाले गोडसे को माफ कर देते हैं. ये वो समय है जब देश को आजादी तो मिली थी, लेकिन लोगों का संघर्ष जारी था. ग्राम स्वराज की स्थापना करते समय गांधी फिर एक बार गांव के जरूरतमंद लोगों की भलाई के लिए एक मुहिम शुरू करते हैं. इस दौरान गांधी की इच्छा पर उन्हें गोडसे के साथ जेल में बंद किया जाता है. गांधी को अपने बैरक में देख गोडसे दंग रह जाता है और उनके बीच शुरू हो जाता है विचारों का युद्ध.

गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध में ‘युद्ध’ तो है, लेकिन विचारों का युद्ध है. कहानी कमज़ोर है, जिससे गंभीर विषय पर बनी फिल्म कई जगह हल्की लगती है. इस फिल्म से राजकुमार संतोषी की बेटी तनीषा संतोषी ने डेब्यू किया है. उन्होंने सुषमा का किरदार निभाया है. इसमें सुषमा और नरेन (अनुज सैनी) के बीच एक लव स्टोरी भी दिखाई गई है, लेकिन कई बार गांधी गोडसे के विचारों के युद्ध के बीच अचानक लव स्टोरी पर कहानी का जाना आपको खटक सकता है. फिल्म देखने पर आप सोचेंगे कि आखिर ये क्यों बनाई गई? निर्माता निर्देशक का क्या उद्देश्य था? वो क्या दिखाना चाहते थे? क्योंकि काल्पनिक बातों को छोड़ बाकी सब इतिहास में है ही, और उसे भी ढंग से परोसा नहीं जा सका है.

फिल्म का एक नया पहलु ये है कि इसमें कल्पना के ज़रिए वो दिखाया गया है, जो शायद आप कभी देख नहीं पाते. गांधी जिंदा होते तो क्या करते? वो गोडसे से मिलते तो क्या करते? इन सवालों के कई जवाब हो सकते हैं, जिनमें से एक राजकुमार संतोषी ने फिल्म के ज़रिए दिया है. एक अलग विचार लेकर लेखक ने इस फिल्म में अलग दुनिया बनाने की कोशिश की है. जहां उन्होंने इतिहास के दो बड़े किरदारों को जीवित करते हुए उनकी नई कहानी बनाई है. इस तरह का एक्सपेरिमेंट विदेशी फिल्मों में देखा गया है. इसके ज़रिए इतिहास में कल्पना मिलाकर पेश किया गया है जो कि फिल्म का प्लस पॉइंट माना जाना चाहिए.

अभिनय कैसा है

लेखक असगर वजाह के एक नाटक से प्रभावित होकर राजकुमार संतोषी ने फिल्म बनाई है. राजकुमार संतोषी ने असगर वजाहत के साथ ही मिलकर इसकी कहानी लिखी है. हालांकि सेकंड पार्ट में जहां गोडसे द्वारा गांधी को गोली मारी जाती है, इस घटना के बाद लिखी गई स्क्रिप्ट और ज्यादा दिलचस्प बनाई जा सकती थी. फिल्म की कास्टिंग और सभी कलाकारों की एक्टिंग शानदार है. नाथुराम गोडसे की भूमिका निभा रहे चिन्मय मांडलेकर ने भी गोडसे के पक्ष को लोगों के सामने काफी सुंदरता से पेश किया है. दीपक अंतानी फिर एक बार गांधी की भूमिका में सबको प्रभावित करते हैं. तनीषा की एक्टिंग भी संयमित रही है. पहली फिल्म के लिहाज से देखें तो उन्होंने अच्छा काम किया है.

फिल्म के गाने और गांधी के भजन ऑडियंस को पसंद आ रहे हैं. फिर एक बार ए आर रहमान का संगीत दिल छू जाता है. 50 साल पहले के लोकेशंस, पुरानी बिल्डिंग्स फिर एक बार फिल्म में जिंदा कर दिए गए हैं. सिनेमाटोग्राफर को उनके काम के लिए पूरे मार्क्स दिए जा सकते हैं.

नया एक्सपेरिमेंट

इस फिल्म के साथ भारतीय सिनेमा में ‘व्हॉट इफ’ स्टाइल का इस्तेमाल किया गया है. यानी कि इतिहास की एक ऐसी घटना सोचना जो घटित ही नहीं हुई है. पहली बार बॉलीवुड में इस तरह की फिल्म बनाई गई है.

‘Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh’ movie review: A timely dialogue on the idea of India 

At a time when the hindutva ideology has seen a spike, director rajkumar santoshi denies godse the pleasure of martyrdom and allows him to evolve. at the same time, he attempts to humanise and critique gandhi in his parallel universe.

At a time when history is being fictionalised, director Rajkumar Santoshi uses creative licence to bust the canards that have been allowed to fester over the years to delegitimise Mahatma Gandhi in public conscience. From being called a pawn of the Empire to faking fasts, a notion has been created that Gandhi forced the first government of independent India to release Rs 55 crore to Pakistan. 

The film suggests that it triggered Nathuram Godse to kill Gandhi on January 30, 1948. Santoshi revisits the events leading up to Gandhi’s assassination and then takes a leap into an imaginary space where Gandhi survives the three bullets that Godse pumped into his chest and seeks a dialogue with him. 

Based on prominent Hindi scholar Asghar Wajahat’s play, one could question the need to provide a platform to Godse and create a false equivalence with Gandhi, but as the film progresses it becomes clear that Gandhi and Godse are just metaphors. The idea is to initiate a dialogue on the idea of India that got diminished at the time of the partition of the country. Instead of brushing the divide under the carpet of euphemisms, it experiments with the bitter truths and seeks to find a middle ground. 

When Gandhi tells Godse his ideology has weakened both Hindustan and Hinduism and impaled the idea of inclusivity that defined India for centuries, he answers Godse’s supporters who keep selling the majoritarian fear for vested interests. When charged with appeasement of Muslims, he simply asks Godse to travel across the country to get a sense of the diverse culture he loves to protect. When a prisoner asks Godse whether he threw any stone at the British government before firing at Gandhi, the disciple of Savarkar doesn’t have any answer. 

At a time when the Hindutva ideology has seen a spike, Santoshi, who once upon a time brought Bhagat Singh back into national imagination, denies Godse the pleasure of martyrdom and allows him to evolve. At the same time, he attempts to humanise and critique Gandhi in his parallel universe. 

Unlike Richard Attenborough, the film probes Gandhi’s personal space and questions his idea of celibacy where physical love is seen as a disorder and how he inflicts psychological violence on those close to him. He also addresses how the Gandhian idea of gram swaraj would have come in the way of government functioning as he could see the poor and the marginalised were yet to be freed. Here is a who man doesn’t allow non-violence to become a cover for lack of courage. 

It provides space to figures like Bhimrao Ambedkar who had ideological differences with him and questions Congress leaders on their decision to turn a movement into a political party.  But the bottomline is in the battle of ideas; you don’t silence people with bullets. As Gandhi says, you can’t achieve goodness by evil means. 

Deepak Antani as Gandhi gets the gait and smile of Gandhi right and manages to provide an insight into the Mahatma’s mind. Chinmay Mandlekar is not bad either but gets theatrical at times. However, the support cast could not display the depth required to convey complex ideas and layered characters. Tanisha Santoshi is impressive as the woman whose devotion to Gandhi comes in the way of her love life. In a stroke of brilliance, Santoshi uses the prayer “Vaishnav Jan To” as a hymn for heartache.   

There are portions in the film that lumbers as Santoshi could not get rid of the staginess of the play on screen. The preachy portions and a dated technique make the film inconsistent, but still it is an important film for it seeks middle ground in an increasingly polarised world.

महात्मा गांधी और नाथूराम गोडसे की मुलाकात कभी नहीं हुई, लेकिन 'गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध' में वही दिखाया गया है कि अगर गांधी गोली लगने के बाद बच गए होते तो क्या होता? अगर महत्मा गांधी और गोडसे की मुलाकात हुई होती तो उनके बीच किस किस तरह की बात होती। फिल्म का विषय थोड़ा अलग है लेकिन मुद्दा वही दिखाया गया है। ये फिल्म हॉलीवुड से शुरू हुए नए प्रयोग ‘व्हाट इफ’ जैसी फिल्म है। मतलब ये कि इतिहास की एक ऐसी घटना सोचना जो घटित ही नहीं हुई। कहानी देश के बंटवारे से शुरू होती है। गांधी आमरण अनशन पर हैं। गोडसे को लगता है कि गांधी मुसलमानों का पक्ष ले रहे हैं और अगर वह जिंदा रहेंगे तो वह आमरण अनशन के जरिए लोगो से अपनी बात मनवाते रहेंगे।

In the middle of this epic film there is a quiet, small scene that helps explain why “Gandhi” is such a remarkable experience. Mahatma Gandhi, at the height of his power and his fame, stands by the side of a lake with his wife of many years. Together, for the benefit of a visitor from the West, they reenact their marriage vows. They do it with solemnity, quiet warmth, and perhaps just a touch of shyness; they are simultaneously demonstrating an aspect of Indian culture and touching on something very personal to them both. At the end of the ceremony, Gandhi says, “We were thirteen at the time.” He shrugs. The marriage had been arranged. Gandhi and his wife had not been in love, had not been old enough for love, and yet love had grown between them. But that is not really the point of the scene. The point, I think, comes in the quiet smile with which Gandhi says the words. At that moment we believe that he is fully and truly human, and at that moment, a turning point in the film, Gandhi declares that it is not only a historical record but a breathing, living document. 

This is the sort of rare epic film that spans the decades, that uses the proverbial cast of thousands, and yet follows a human thread from beginning to end: “Gandhi” is no more overwhelmed by the scope of its production than was Gandhi overwhelmed by all the glory of the British Empire. The movie earns comparison with two classic works by David Lean, “ Lawrence of Arabia ” and “ Doctor Zhivago ”, in its ability to paint a strong human story on a very large canvas. 

The movie is a labor of love by Sir Richard Attenborough, who struggled for years to get financing for his huge but “non-commercial” project. Various actors were considered over the years for the all-important title role, but the actor who was finally chosen, Ben Kingsley , makes the role so completely his own that there is a genuine feeling that the spirit of Gandhi is on the screen. Kingsley’s performance is powerful without being loud or histrionic; he is almost always quiet, observant, and soft-spoken on the screen, and yet his performance comes across with such might that we realize, afterward, that the sheer moral force of Gandhi must have been behind the words. Apart from all its other qualities, what makes this movie special is that it was obviously made by people who believed in it. 

The movie begins in the early years of the century, in South Africa. Gandhi moved there from India in 1893, when he was twenty-three. He already had a law degree, but, degree or not, he was a target of South Africa’s system of racial segregation, in which Indians (even though they are Caucasian, and thus should “qualify”) are denied full citizenship and manhood. Gandhi’s reaction to the system is, at first, almost naive; an early scene on a train doesn’t quite work only because we can’t believe the adult Gandhi would still be so ill-informed about the racial code of South Africa. But Gandhi’s response sets the tone of the film. He is nonviolent but firm. He is sure where the right lies in every situation, and he will uphold it in total disregard for the possible consequences to himself. 

Before long Gandhi is in India, a nation of hundreds of millions, ruled by a relative handful of British. They rule almost by divine right, shouldering the “white man’s burden” even though they have not quite been requested to do so by the Indians. Gandhi realizes that Indians have been made into second-class citizens in their own country, and he begins a program of civil disobedience that is at first ignored by the British, then scorned, and finally, reluctantly, dealt with, sometimes by subterfuge, sometimes by brutality. Scenes in this central passage of the movie make it clear that nonviolent protests could contain a great deal of violence. There is a shattering scene in which wave after wave of Gandhi’s followers march forward to be beaten to the ground by British clubs. Through it all, Gandhi maintains a certain detachment; he is convinced he is right, convinced that violence is not an answer, convinced that sheer moral example can free his nation as it did. “You have been guests in our home long enough,” he tells the British, “Now we would like for you to leave.” The movie is populated with many familiar faces, surrounding the newcomer Kingsley. Where would the British cinema be without its dependable, sturdy, absolutely authoritative generation of great character actors like Trevor Howard (as a British judge), John Mills (the British viceroy), John Gielgud , and Michael Hordern? There are also such younger actors as Ian Bannen , Edward Fox , Ian Charleson, and, from America, Martin Sheen as a reporter and Candice Bergen as the photographer Margaret Bourke-White. 

Gandhi stands at the quiet center. And Ben Kingsley’s performance finds the right note and stays with it. There are complexities here; “Gandhi” is not simply a moral story with a happy ending, and the tragedy of the bloodshed between the Hindu and Muslim populations of liberated India is addressed, as is the partition of India and Pakistan, which we can almost literally feel breaking Mahatma Gandhi’s heart. 

I imagine that for many Americans, Mahatma Gandhi remains a dimly understood historical figure. I suspect a lot of us know he was a great Indian leader without quite knowing why and such is our ignorance of Eastern history and culture we may not fully realize that his movement did indeed liberate India, in one of the greatest political and economic victories of all time, achieved through nonviolent principles. What is important about this film is not that it serves as a history lesson (although it does) but that, at a time when the threat of nuclear holocaust hangs ominously in the air, it reminds us that we are, after all, human, and thus capable of the most extraordinary and wonderful achievements, simply through the use of our imagination, our will, and our sense of right.
