Find out how a high school teacher like Jamie Barkin uses Piktochart to improve learning in the classroom for her students.

Pro tip: make your presentation as interactive as possible. Students have an attention span of two to three minutes per year of age. To keep minds from wandering off, include some interactive games or activities in the lesson. For example, if you conducted a lesson on the respiratory system, you could ask them to practice breathing techniques.

Maintain eye contact with your students, and you’ll get instant feedback on how interested they are in the interactive presentation.

Make School Presentation Visuals Without the Hassle of Making Them From Scratch

School presentations, when done right, can help teachers engage their classes and improve students’ education effectively by presenting information using the right presentation topic.

If you’re pressed for time and resources to make your school presentation visuals , choose a template from Piktochart’s template gallery . Aside from the easy customization options, you can also print and download these templates to your preferred format.

Piktochart also professional templates to create infographics , posters , brochures , reports , and more.

What is a Presentation of Learning and Why Do We Do It?

Alec patton.

A Presentation of Learning (POL) requires students to present their learning to an audience, in order to prove that they are ready to progress. Effective POLs include both academic content and the student’s reflection on their social and personal growth.  They are important rituals – literally “rites of passage” for students.

At my school, every student gives two POLs per year – one at the end of fall semester, and one at the end of the year. They happen at the same time that most schools have their final exams, and serve a similar function. However, unlike exams, POLs happen in front of an audience that includes their teachers, parents, and peers. By requiring students to present to an audience, reflect on their learning, and answer probing questions on the spot, we are helping students build skills that they will use for the rest of their life. Taking an exam, on the other hand, is a skill that students will rarely, if ever, need to utilize after they finish college.

Every team’s POL expectations are slightly different, but they all fall into one of two broad categories: “presentation” or “discussion”.

Presentation

The presentation is the “classic” version of the POL. A student gives a prepared presentation on their own, and takes questions. Designing a POL structure is a balancing act for the teacher: require students to cover too much material, and every one of your students will march in and recite a near-identical list of assignments completed and skills learned. On the other hand, make the requirements too open-ended and the POL can become an empty facsimile of reflection – or, as students have described it to me, “BS-ing”!

I once saw a POL assignment that included the phrase “it has to have some magic”, which students were free to interpret as they saw fit. It led to unpredictable and delightful presentations, and inspired more thought and extra work than any rubric could have.

The “Discussion of Learning” trades the presentation structure for a seminar structure: a small group of students facilitates their own hour-long discussion, with the teachers initially just listening, then adding questions to enrich and drive the discussion. The parents are invited in for the final fifteen minutes, when the students summarize the discussion thus far and invite the parents to participate.

In my experience, this format tends to lead to meatier, more honest reflection than presentations. Especially when students are allowed to choose their own groups, they tend to make themselves more vulnerable than in other contexts. This format also opens up a space for students whose voices aren’t always heard in the classroom. The most memorable POL I’ve ever been a part of was a discussion by a group of girls, all  them native Spanish speakers, who talked about having been made uncomfortably aware of their accents by peers, and struggling to make their voices heard within our team. It was powerful, effective, thoughtful – everything I would have wanted from a POL, but it never would have happened if the structure had been different.

Which format should I choose, and when?

Students will be best-served by experiencing both the “presentation” and “discussion” format at some point in their academic careers.

I like to end fall semester with a presentation, because individual presentations give me the clearest sense of which skills a student has successfully developed, and what they will need more help with in the coming semester. I then end the year with a discussion, because at this point I know the students very well, and in a small-group setting we can speak frankly both about their successes, and the potential problems they will face in the coming year. I end this discussion with every student setting goals for the summer and coming year that I record and email to the student and their parents, so that they leave my class with the best possible trajectory into the future.

How a Simple Presentation Framework Helps Students Learn

Explaining concepts to their peers helps students shore up their content knowledge and improve their communication skills.

presentation for learning

A few years ago, my colleague and I were awarded a Hawai‘i Innovation Fund Grant. The joy of being awarded the grant was met with dread and despair when we were informed that we would have to deliver a 15-minute presentation on our grant write-up to a room full of educational leaders. If that wasn’t intimidating enough, my colleague informed me that he was not going to be in Hawai‘i at the time of the presentation. I had “one shot,” just a 15-minute presentation to encapsulate all of the 17 pages of the grant I had cowritten, but how?

I worked hard to construct and deliver a presentation that was concise yet explicit. I was clear on the big picture of what the grant was composed of and provided a visual of it in practice. I made sure the audience understood the “why” behind the grant. I showed how it worked, the concrete elements of it, and how they made it successful. I finished with a scaffold that would help others know how to initiate it within their context, giving them the freedom to make it authentically their own.

I received good feedback from the presentation, and more important, what was shared positively impacted student learning in other classrooms across the state.

A Simple Framework for Presentations

That first presentation took me over a month to prepare, but afterward I noticed that my prep time for presentations shrank exponentially from a few months to a few (uninterrupted) days. Interestingly enough, as a by-product of creating the original presentation, I created an abstract framework that I have used for every professional learning presentation I have delivered since then. The “What, Why, How, and How-To” framework goes as follows:

  • What? What can the audience easily connect to and know as a bridge to the unknown for the rest of the experience?
  • Why? Why should they care to listen to (and learn from) the rest of the presentation? What’s in it for them to shift from passive listeners to actively engaged? The audience needs to know why you believe in this so much that you are compelled to share it.
  • How? What are the key elements that make it unique? How is it effective in doing what it does? What are the intricacies of how it works?
  • How-to? How could they start doing this on their own? How could this knowledge serve as a foundational springboard? Connect it to “why.”

Benefits for Students

One of the best parts of presentations is that they help the presenter to improve their communication skills. The presenter is learning how to give a presentation by doing it. To prepare a presentation, the presenter must know the intricate elements of what they are presenting and the rationale for their importance. In the presentation delivery, the presenter must be articulate and meticulous to ensure that everyone in the audience is able (and willing) to process the information provided.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that preparing and delivering presentations could provide a valuable learning opportunity for my students.

I recall teaching mathematical concepts whereby students would immediately apply knowledge learned to accomplish the task in silence and without any deeper questioning. Only after I asked them to provide presentations on these concepts did they regularly ask me, “Why is this important, again?” or “What makes this so special?” My students’ mathematical literacy grew through preparing presentations with the “What, Why, How, and How-To” framework, which supported them in their ability to demonstrate content knowledge through mathematical rigor (balancing conceptual understanding, skills and procedural fluency, and real-world application).

  • The “what” served as the mathematical concept.
  • The “why” demonstrated the real-world application of the concept.
  • “The “how” demonstrated conceptual understanding of the concept.
  • The “how-to” demonstrated skills and procedures of the concept.

In addition to content knowledge, the sequential competencies of clarity, cohesiveness, and captivation ensured that the presenter could successfully share the information with their audience. When combined, these framed a rubric that supported students in optimizing their presentation deliveries. The competencies are as follows:

1. Content knowledge. The presenter must display a deep understanding of what they are delivering in order to share the “what, why, how, and how-to” of the topic.

2. Clarity. The presenter must be clear with precise, academic language. As the content they deliver may be new to the audience, any lack of clarity will alienate the audience. Providing multiple modes of representation greatly addresses a variety of processing needs of a diverse audience.

3. Cohesiveness. When making clear connections, the presenter bridges gaps between each discrete component in how they all work together as integral elements of the topic. Any gaps too large may make the elements look disjointed or, worse, the audience feel lost.

4. Captivation. The presenter must captivate the audience through any combination of audience engagement or storytelling . They make the presentation flow with the energy of a song , and in the end, they leave the audience with a delicate balance of feeling fulfilled and inspired to learn more.

Anyone can build an effective presentation with the “What, Why, How, and How-To” framework, along with competencies of content knowledge, clarity, cohesiveness, and captivation. The better we teach and coach others on how to create and deliver presentations, the more we learn from these individuals through their work.

In my class, one multilingual learner responded to the prompt “What are the non-math (life lessons) you have found valuable from this class?” with “I learn what is learning and teaching... I truly understood how teaching is actually learning when I had presentation. I found a bit of desire to being a teacher. I hope you also learned something from this class.” I always learn from my students when they present.

presentation ideas for learning and development teams

10 Presentation Ideas for Learning & Development Teams

Many learning and development presentation topics are standard across companies : leadership development, cultural competency and diversity appreciation, sexual harassment prevention, and onboarding. If you’re looking to expand your offerings, here are some presentation ideas to consider.

Training Topic Presentation Ideas

1. professional communication.

Different generations have different norms regarding what’s appropriate when communicating in a professional environment. Standards also vary by industry, company, and mode of communication. A primer on your company’s expected standards of written, email , text, and verbal communication will help get everyone on the same page. Address the basics but also touch on points like whether proper punctuation is expected in texts if emojis are appropriate in emails, and what fonts are ideal for your digital signature.

2. Giving and Receiving Feedback

Whether it’s a manager who regularly does performance evaluations or a new team member coming up on their 90-day review , every employee needs to know how to give and receive feedback appropriately.

3. Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and regulate one’s emotions and to recognize and respond appropriately to the emotions in others. An emotionally intelligent staff naturally cultivates a healthy workplace environment. Presentation ideas around this topic include self-assessments to identify one’s level of emotional intelligence and exercises to improve it.

4. Public Speaking

Even if a job doesn’t technically involve public speaking, nearly every employee could benefit from public speaking skills. Whether it’s speaking up to present an idea in a staff meeting, making a sales pitch to a small group of executives, or giving an end-of-year team status report, speaking confidently in public is an important skill.

5. The Intergenerational Workplace

There are many ages represented in most workplaces, each with its own set of norms, expectations, values, and assumptions. Most employees need a little help to view employees of a different generation as an asset rather than a liability, so HR presentations focused on navigating the intergenerational workplace can be very helpful.

6. Customer Service

Everyone needs customer service skills, even if they’re not dealing directly with customers. Help employees understand who their “customer” is (even if it’s an internal team) and how they can demonstrate top-notch customer service in every interpersonal encounter.

7. Digital Literacy

No matter how tech-savvy an employee is, there’s always room for improvement. Presentation ideas include screen-capture tutorials of a software or technology tool using a presentation maker, social media training, or email management.

Grit is a modern buzzword, but most people don’t have a clear understanding of what it means. Presentation ideas to encourage grit in your employees include goal-setting, perseverance, internal motivation, and re-framing failures for a positive purpose.

9. Change in the Workplace

Change is hard. It’s hard if you’re the one trying to initiate it, and it’s hard if you find yourself the “victim” of it. HR presentations on workplace change can help make the process smoother and more successful for everyone involved.

10. Influencing the Workplace Culture

Even if an employee isn’t a manager, they affect the overall workplace culture. Conduct presentations on being a positive influence, recognizing toxic employees, and how to cultivate a workplace environment that’s healthy and enjoyable for everyone.

What do you do when you need to share your knowledge with an audience? One of the best ways is to build a PowerPoint presentation for teaching . Use it as a supplement when you're speaking.

Planner Mission and Vision

It's often said that people have different learning styles. While some learn best by listening, others are visual learners. Other learners love trying hands-on exercises to learn the concept at hand. The best part of an effective presentation is you can combine all these into one package.

PowerPoint has carved out its place as the go-to presentation software for its ease of use. And when you're scrambling to quickly put together a presentation about education, you need all the help you can get to focus on the content instead of the slide designs.

In this tutorial, I'm going to share my techniques for building an education PowerPoint presentation . Even if you're a PowerPoint rookie, you can create a professional and informative education presentation.

Do you want to learn even more about creating presentations on education topics? Keep reading for a step-by-step guide with additional information and tips.

1. How to Write an Educational Presentation

Start by spending some time writing and planning the content for your presentation about education. It's hard to start with a blank slate for building an education PowerPoint presentation, but it helps if you can break down what you need to do with an easily repeatable set of steps.

Let's talk about key steps you can take to make writing a presentation feel more manageable:

Step 1. Set a Learning Objective

Every well-written educational presentation starts off the same way: by setting a goal for it. You need to set a learning objective,  the goal of what your audience will know after they've seen the presentation.

If you don't have a targeted goal for your education PowerPoint presentation, it's likely that your points will wander away from the central idea. Setting a single, focused learning objective helps ensure that everything you write supports that central idea.

Setting a learning goal and keeping it in mind helps ensure that your presentation has a tight focus.

There are many types of presentations, like persuasive, decision-driven, introductory, and informative (educational). The objectives that you set for these presentations are different because they each have different desired outcomes.

Here are some examples of three different learning objectives that would feel appropriate for an educational presentation:

  • This presentation will teach the audience the basics of personal finance and how to start investing.
  • The audience will learn how to write their first line of Javascript code.
  • The presentation will share the latest techniques for performing employee performance reviews.

Write out your learning objective so that you'll keep it in mind while writing the rest of the presentation about education.

Step 2. Write an Outline for Key Ideas

If the learning objective is the destination for what you want to accomplish, an outline is the roadmap that helps you make sure you arrive at the goal. Each of the points in your outline should be a supporting idea for the learning objective.

You don't have to use a complex tool to write an outline. In fact, a simple tool is better for drafting out these rough ideas in outline format.

Outline example in Word

I like to think of each of the outline points as key ideas for reinforcing the learning goal. Each of them should be different in some way.

Step 3. Build Supporting Points

Now, it's time to reinforce these key points by adding supporting points. These are just the details that illustrate the key ideas.

In my outlines, these are ideas for how I might teach the key ideas. One bullet point might be "chart that shows the power of compounding growth over time," for example. I usually put a second leave in the outline for each of the supporting points.

Remember that we want to teach concepts through a variety of lenses that accommodate different learning styles. You could use a second-level bullet point for a visual approach to teaching (charts and graphs), and a separate bullet point for an idea on an audience hands-on method to learning the idea.

2. Elements for Education PowerPoints

After you firm up ideas for the content that you'll include in the presentation on education, it's time to open PowerPoint. Start building the education PowerPoint presentation educational slides that support you while speaking.

So, what if you need to prepare a presentation for your classroom or audience, and you don't have the time to build out the presentation from scratch?

Elements PowerPoint Themes Example

In this tutorial, I'm going to use an educational PowerPoint template from Envato Elements. Elements offers unlimited downloads for a flat rate monthly fee. That includes more than 800 Microsoft PowerPoint templates. Use it to get a major head start.

Sure, PowerPoint has some built-in themes. But Microsoft's approach to custom themes is just different combinations of font styles, color schemes, and background images. The themes that Elements offers include pre-built slide designs that you can drop your own content into. These education PowerPoint presentation slides help you overcome the work of starting with a blank slate each time.

Education PowerPoint Theme

In this tutorial, I'm going to work with Envato Elements' presentation template titled,  Education PowerPoint theme .  The structure and simplicity of this theme makes it ideal for building an educational presentation theme.

If the template I selected isn't quite your style, don't miss out on the rest of Elements educational templates . Each of these pre-built presentations has plenty of ideas for building out an effective presentation on education PPT.

3. How to Build an Educational Presentation

Let's walk through building an educational presentation that'll drive knowledge to an audience.

We're going to build a presentation that familiarizes an audience with the basics of personal finance. This fictitious slide deck will stress the importance of how you handle your finances. It'll also educate the audience on how to get started.

Step 1. Introduce Yourself and the Subject

If someone has shown up for your presentation on education PPT, they likely have an idea of what it's about. But you can't guarantee that. So, it's important that you set the stage for the key ideas.

It's also important that you introduce yourself. I'll usually try to include at least a brief one-liner that establishes my knowledge on the subject.

For this slide design, let's start off with slide 2 in the Education deck. This has a placeholder for a professional image. If you've got one of yourself available, it's great to replace the placeholder with a self-image to personalize it.

Personal Finance Persona Example

Step 2. Give the Presentation About Education a "Why"

You're always competing for the audience's attention. An important part of building an educational presentation is capturing that interest near the outset.

To establish and hold that attention, you've got to show the audience the potential of following your advice and techniques.

Let's use slide design 6 for this purpose. A bit of inspiration sets the stage for the audience to soak up your advice in the rest of the presentation.

Personal Finance Slide

One of the other benefits of using Envato Elements is that you've got access to a huge library of stock photos. Instead of scouring the web for an image that you can use or paying to license one image after another, an all-you-can download subscription to Elements gives you access to the entire library.

In this case, I jumped back to Elements and pulled a stock photo selection for inclusion in the slide deck.

Elements Personal Finance

Step 3. Share Techniques and Tips for the Topic

I like to think of this education presentation as the meat of the matter. You've set the stage, created a sense of importance. Now, the audience needs ideas on what the steps are that they can take to succeed.

In the screenshot below, I've customized slide design 10. This includes four easy steps, illustrated by arrows to show a progression of the needed steps.

Step by Step Guide to Problem Solving

Plan on building out several education PowerPoint presentation slides to explain the key learning steps. This is one example of using a slide in the Education deck to drive your concept.

Step 4. Teach With Visualizations

For the visual learners in the audience, it helps to have a chart or graph that illustrates the concept at hand. You might have the most eloquent speaking points in the rest of the presentation, but a well-made chart could be the key to driving your point home.

In the screenshot below, I generated a chart that shows the power of compound interest. I used slide design 24, which already had a placeholder for a graph that I modified with my own data.

Power of Compounding Growth with Visualization

Step 5. Finish By Asking for Action

After you've spent the presentation sharing your advice and information, ask for an action from the audience.

In our case, the best step is to ask the audience to start budgeting to manage their finances. A simple, clean slide design that focuses on a single line of text is ideal for that.

Let's use slide design 31 to illustrate this concept. It's a great example of how you can take a slide that's for one purpose and easily transform it into an entirely different usage. I deleted the map graphic and increased the font size to make an impact.

Finish by Asking for Action

These are a few of the education PowerPoint presentation slides that you might want to build, but they showcase how easy it is to get started.

5 Great PowerPoint Educational Presentation Tips

Now that you know how to make an educational PowerPoint presentation, here are a few more tips. They'll help you make the most out of your presentation and your chosen PowerPoint template.

1. Customize Your Presentation With School Colors

A great way to make your presentation about education more custom is to use your school colors. Use them as accents to highlight heading elements or in charts, graphs, buttons.

2. Use Animations Carefully

Animation and slide transitions can add interest to your presentation. But avoid using them for each slide. Instead, save them to transition between different sections of your presentation.

3. Use Visual Aids

Make it easy for your students to follow along by adding plenty of visual elements throughout your presentation about education. This includes charts, graphs, photos, infographics, and other infographic elements.

Solar System Education Presentation

4. Focus On One Topic Per Slide

Avoid having many ideas on one slide. This will overwhelm your audience. It'll also increase the likelihood of them zoning out instead of listening to what you've got to say.

5. White Space Is Your Friend

Leave plenty of white space around various presentation elements. This will make it easy for your audience to focus on your presentation, not to mention you’ll avoid your presentation looking cluttered.

Still, one can ask: is it the same set of skills, or are they dependable on the type of presentation?

In this article, we will introduce the different types of presentations accompanied by the skillset required to master them. The purpose, as always, is to retain the audience’s interest for a long-lasting and convincing message.

The Importance of Presentation Skills

Persuasive presentations, instructional presentations, informative presentations, inspirational presentations, basic presentation skills, what are the main difficulties when giving a presentation, recommendations to improve your presentation skills, closing statement.

Effective communication is the answer to reaching business and academic goals. The scenarios in which we can be required to deliver a presentation are as diverse as one can imagine. Still, some core concepts apply to all presentations.

We define presentation skills as a compendium of soft skills that directly affect your presentation performance and contribute to creating a great presentation. These are not qualities acquired by birth but skills you ought to train and master to delve into professional environments.

You may ask: is it really that evident when a presenter is not prepared? Here are some common signs people can experience during presentations:

  • Evasive body language: Not making eye contact with the audience, arms closed tightly to the body, hands in pockets all the time.
  • Lack of interest in the presenter’s voice: dull tone, not putting an effort to articulate the topics.
  • Doubting when asked to answer a question
  • Irksome mood

The list can go on about common presenter mistakes , and most certainly, it will affect the performance of any presented data if the lack of interest by the presenter is blatantly obvious.  Another element to consider is anxiety, and according to research by the National Institute of Mental Health, 73% of the population in the USA is affected by glossophobia , which is the fear of public speaking, judgment, or negative evaluation by other people.

Therefore, presentation skills training is essential for any business professional who wants to achieve effective communication . It will remove the anxiety from presentation performance and help users effectively deliver their message and connect with the audience.

Archetypes of presentations

Persuasive presentations aim to convince the audience – often in short periods – to acquire a product or service, adhere to a cause, or invest in a company. For business entrepreneurs or politicians, persuasive presentations are their tool for the trade.

Unless you aim to be perceived as an imposter, a proper persuasive presentation has the elements of facts, empathy, and logic, balanced under a well-crafted narrative. The central pillar of these presentations is to identify the single factor that gathered your audience: it could be a market need, a social cause, or a revolutionary concept for today’s society. It has to be something with enough power to gather critiques – both good and bad.

That single factor has to be backed up by facts. Research that builds your hypothesis on how to solve that problem. A deep understanding of the target audience’s needs , concerns, and social position regarding the solution your means can offer. When those elements are in place, building a pitch becomes an easy task.

Graphics can help you introduce information in a compelling format, lowering the need for lengthy presentations. Good presentation skills for persuasive presentations go by the hand of filtering relevant data and creating the visual cues that resonate with what your audience demands.

One powerful example of a persuasive presentation is the technique known as the elevator pitch . You must introduce your idea or product convincingly to the audience in a timeframe between 30 seconds and less than 2 minutes. You have to expose:

  • What do you do
  • What’s the problem to solve
  • Why is your solution different from others
  • Why should the audience care about your expertise

presentation skills an elevator pitch slide

For that very purpose, using engaging graphics with contrasting colors elevates the potential power of your message. It speaks professionalism, care for details, and out-of-the-box thinking. Knowing how to end a presentation is also critical, as your CTAs should be placed with care.

Therefore, let’s resume the requirements of persuasive presentations in terms of good presentation skills:

  • Identifying problems and needs
  • Elaborating “the hook” (the element that grabs the audience’s attention)
  • Knowing how to “tie” your audience (introducing a piece of information related to the hook that causes an emotional impact)
  • Broad knowledge of body language and hand gestures to quickly convey your message
  • Being prepared to argue a defense of your point of view
  • Handling rejection
  • Having a proactive attitude to convert opportunities into new projects
  • Using humor, surprise, or personal anecdotes as elements to sympathize with the audience
  • Having confidence
  • Be able to summarize facts and information in visually appealing ways

In the case of instructional presentations, we ought to differentiate two distinctive types:

  • Lecture Presentations : Presentations being held at universities or any other educative institution. Those presentations cover, topic by topic, and the contents of a syllabus and are created by the team of teachers in charge of the course.
  • Training Presentations : These presentations take place during in-company training sessions and usually comprise a good amount of content that is resumed into easy-to-take solutions. They are aimed to coach employees over certain topics relevant to their work performance. The 70-20-10 Model is frequently used to address these training situations.

Lecture presentations appeal to the gradual introduction of complex concepts, following a structure set in the course’s syllabus. These presentations often have a similar aesthetic as a group of professors or researchers created to share their knowledge about a topic. Personal experience does tell that course presentations often rely on factual data, adequately documented, and on the theoretical side.

An example of a presentation that lies under this concept is a Syllabus Presentation, used by the teaching team to introduce the subject to new students, evaluation methods, concepts to be learned, and expectations to pass the course.

using a course syllabus presentation to boost your instructional presentation skills

On the other hand, training presentations are slide decks designed to meet an organization’s specific needs in the formal education of their personnel. Commonly known as “continuous education,” plenty of companies invest resources in coaching their employees to achieve higher performance results. These presentations have the trademark of being concise since their idea is to introduce the concepts that shall be applied in practice sessions.

Ideally, the training presentations are introduced with little text and easy-to-recognize visual cues. Since the idea is to summarize as much as possible, these are visually appealing for the audience. They must be dynamic enough to allow the presenter to convey the message.

presentation skills example of a training presentation

Those key takeaways remind employees when they revisit their learning resources and allow them to ruminate on questions that fellow workers raise.

To sum up this point, building presentation skills for instructional presentations requires:

  • Ability to put complex concepts into simpler words
  • Patience and a constant learning mindset
  • Voice training to deliver lengthy speeches without being too dense
  • Ability to summarize points and note the key takeaways
  • Empathizing with the audience to understand their challenges in the learning process

skill requirements for instructional presentations

The informative presentations take place in business situations, such as when to present project reports from different departments to the management. Another potential usage of these presentations is in SCRUM or other Agile methodologies, when a sprint is completed, to discuss the advance of the project with the Product Owner.

As they are presentations heavily dependent on data insights, it’s common to see the usage of infographics and charts to express usually dense data in simpler terms and easy to remember.

a SCRUM process being shown in an informative slide

Informative presentations don’t just fall into the business category. Ph.D. Dissertation and Thesis presentations are topics that belong to the informative presentations category as they condense countless research hours into manageable reports for the academic jury.

an example of a thesis dissertation template

Since these informational presentations can be perceived as lengthy and data-filled, it is important to learn the following professional presentation skills:

  • Attention to detail
  • Be able to explain complex information in simpler terms
  • Creative thinking
  • Powerful diction
  • Working on pauses and transitions
  • Pacing the presentation, so not too much information is divulged per slide

skill requirements for informational presentations

The leading inspirational platform, TEDx, comes to mind when talking about inspirational presentations. This presentation format has the peculiarity of maximizing the engagement with the audience to divulge a message, and due to that, it has specific requirements any presenter must meet.

This presentation format usually involves a speaker on a stage, either sitting or better standing, in which the presenter engages with the audience with a storytelling format about a life experience, a job done that provided a remarkable improvement for society, etc.

using a quote slide to boost inspirational presentation skills

Empathizing with the audience is the key ingredient for these inspirational presentations. Still, creativity is what shapes the outcome of your performance as people are constantly looking for different experiences – not the same recipe rephrased with personal touches. The human factor is what matters here, way above data and research. What has your experience to offer to others? How can it motivate another human being to pursue a similar path or discover their true calling?

To achieve success in terms of communication skills presentation, these inspirational presentations have the following requirements:

  • Focus on the audience (engage, consider their interests, and make them a part of your story)
  • Putting ego aside
  • Creative communication skills
  • Storytelling skills
  • Body language knowledge to apply the correct gestures to accompany your story
  • Voice training
  • Using powerful words

skills required for inspirational presentations

After discussing the different kinds of presentations we can come across at any stage of our lives, a group of presentation skills is standard in any type of presentation. See below what makes a good presentation and which skills you must count on to succeed as a presenter.

Punctuality

Punctuality is a crucial aspect of giving an effective presentation. Nothing says more about respect for your audience and the organization you represent than delivering the presentation on time . Arriving last minute puts pressure on the tech team behind audiovisuals, as they don’t have enough preparation to test microphones, stage lights, and projector settings, which can lead to a less powerful presentation Even when discussing presentations hosted in small rooms for a reduced audience, testing the equipment becomes essential for an effective presentation.

A solution for this is to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Ideally, one hour is a sweet spot since the AV crew has time to check the gear and requirements for your presentation. Another benefit of this, for example, in inspirational presentations, is measuring the previous presenter’s impact on the audience. This gives insights about how to resonate with the public, and their interest, and how to accommodate your presentation for maximum impact.

Body Language

Our bodies can make emotions transparent for others, even when we are unaware of such a fact. Proper training for body language skills reduces performance anxiety, giving the audience a sense of expertise about the presented topic.

Give your presentation and the audience the respect they deserve by watching over these potential mistakes:

  • Turning your back to the audience for extended periods : It’s okay to do so when introducing an important piece of information or explaining a graph, but it is considered rude to give your back to the audience constantly.
  • Fidgeting : We are all nervous in the presence of strangers, even more, if we are the center of attention for that moment. Instead of playing with your hair or making weird hand gestures, take a deep breath to center yourself before the presentation and remember that everything you could do to prepare is already done. Trust your instincts and give your best.
  • Intense eye contact : Have you watched a video where the presenter stared at the camera the entire time? That’s the feeling you transmit to spectators through intense eye contact. It’s a practice often used by politicians to persuade.
  • Swearing : This is a no-brainer. Even when you see influencers swearing on camera or in podcasts or live presentations, it is considered an informal and lousy practice for business and academic situations. If you have a habit to break when it comes to this point, find the humor in these situations and replace your swear words with funny alternatives (if the presentation allows for it).

Voice Tone plays a crucial role in delivering effective presentations and knowing how to give a good presentation. Your voice is a powerful tool for exposing your ideas and feelings . Your voice can articulate the message you are telling, briefing the audience if you feel excited about what you are sharing or, in contrast, if you feel the presentation is a burden you ought to complete.

Remember, passion is a primary ingredient in convincing people. Therefore, transmitting such passion with a vibrant voice may help gather potential business partners’ interest.

But what if you feel sick prior to the presentation? If, by chance, your throat is sore minutes before setting foot on the stage, try this: when introducing yourself, mention that you are feeling a bit under the weather. This resonates with the audience to pay more attention to your efforts. In case you don’t feel comfortable about that, ask the organizers for a cup of tea, as it will settle your throat and relax your nerves.

Tech Skills

Believe it or not, people still feel challenged by technology these days. Maybe that’s the reason why presentation giants like Tony Robbins opt not to use PowerPoint presentations . The reality is that there are plenty of elements involved in a presentation that can go wrong from the tech side:

  • A PDF not opening
  • Saving your presentation in a too-recent PowerPoint version
  • A computer not booting up
  • Mac laptops and their never-ending compatibility nightmare
  • Not knowing how to change between slides
  • Not knowing how to use a laser pointer
  • Internet not working
  • Audio not working

We can come up with a pretty long list of potential tech pitfalls, and yet more than half of them fall in presenters not being knowledgeable about technology.

If computers aren’t your thing, let the organization know about this beforehand. There is always a crew member available to help presenters switch between slides or configure the presentation for streaming. This takes the pressure off your shoulders, allowing you to concentrate on the content to present. Remember, even Bill Gates can get a BSOD during a presentation .

Presentations, while valuable for conveying information and ideas, can be daunting for many individuals. Here are some common difficulties people encounter when giving presentations:

Public Speaking Anxiety

Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking, affects a significant portion of the population. This anxiety can lead to nervousness, trembling, and forgetfulness during a presentation.

Lack of Confidence

Many presenters struggle with self-doubt, fearing that they may not be knowledgeable or skilled enough to engage their audience effectively.

Content Organization

Organizing information in a coherent and engaging manner can be challenging. Presenters often grapple with how to structure their content to make it easily digestible for the audience. Artificial Intelligence can help us significantly reduce the content arrangement time when you work with tools like our AI Presentation Maker (made for presenters by experts in presentation design).

Audience Engagement

Keeping the audience’s attention and interest throughout the presentation can be difficult. Distractions, disengaged attendees, or lack of interaction can pose challenges.

Technical Issues

Technology glitches, such as malfunctioning equipment, incompatible file formats, or poor internet connectivity, can disrupt presentations and increase stress.

Time Management

Striking the right balance between providing enough information and staying within time limits is a common challenge. Going over or under the allotted time can affect the effectiveness of the presentation.

Handling Questions and Challenges

Responding to unexpected questions, criticism, or challenges from the audience can be difficult, especially when presenters are unprepared or lack confidence in their subject matter.

Visual Aids and Technology

Creating and effectively using visual aids like slides or multimedia can be a struggle for some presenters. Technical competence is essential in this aspect.

Language and Articulation

Poor language skills or unclear articulation can hinder effective communication. Presenters may worry about stumbling over words or failing to convey their message clearly.

Maintaining appropriate and confident body language can be challenging. Avoiding nervous habits, maintaining eye contact, and using gestures effectively requires practice.

Overcoming Impersonal Delivery

In virtual presentations, maintaining a personal connection with the audience can be difficult. The absence of face-to-face interaction can make it challenging to engage and read the audience.

Cultural and Diversity Awareness

Presenting to diverse audiences requires sensitivity to cultural differences and varying levels of familiarity with the topic.

In this section, we gathered some tips on how to improve presentation skills that can certainly make an impact if applied to your presentation skills. We believe these skills can be cultivated to transform into habits for your work routine.

Tip #1: Build a narrative

One memorable way to guarantee presentation success is by writing a story of all the points you desire to cover. This statement is based on the logic behind storytelling and its power to connect with people .

Don’t waste time memorizing slides or reading your presentation to the audience. It feels unnatural, and any question that diverts from the topic in discussion certainly puts you in jeopardy or, worse, exposes you as a fraud in the eyes of the audience. And before you ask, it is really evident when a presenter has a memorized speech.

Build and rehearse the presentation as if telling a story to a group of interested people. Lower the language barrier by avoiding complex terms that maybe even you aren’t fully aware of their meaning. Consider the ramifications of that story, what it could lead to, and which are the opportunities to explore. Then, visualize yourself giving the presentation in a natural way.

Applying this technique makes the presentation feel like second nature to you. It broadens the spectrum in which you can show expertise over a topic or even build the basis for new interesting points of view about the project.

Tip #2: Don’t talk for more than 3 minutes per slide

It is a common practice of presenters to bombard the audience with facts and information whilst retaining the same slide on the screen. Why can this happen? It could be because the presenter condensed the talk into very few slides and preferred to talk. The reality is that your spectators won’t retain the information you are giving unless you give visual cues to help that process.

Opt to prepare more slides and pace your speech to match the topics shown on each slide. Don’t spend more than 3 minutes per slide unless you have to introduce a complex piece of data. Use visual cues to direct the spectators about what you talk about, and summarize the principal concepts discussed at the end of each section.

Tip #3: Practice meditation daily

Anxiety is the number one enemy of professional presenters. It slowly builds without you being aware of your doubts and can hinder your performance in multiple ways: making you feel paralyzed, fidgeting, making you forget language skills or concepts, affecting your health, etc.

Meditation is an ancient practice taken from Buddhist teachings that train your mind to be here in the present. We often see the concepts of meditation and mindfulness as synonyms, whereas you should be aware that meditation is a practice that sets the blocks to reach a state of mindfulness. For presenters, being in the here and now is essential to retain focus, but meditation techniques also teach us to control our breathing and be in touch with our body signals when stress builds up.

The customary practice of meditation has an impact on imagination and creativity but also helps to build patience – a skill much needed for connecting with your audience in instructional presentations.

Having the proper set of presentation skills can be quite subjective. It goes beyond presentation tips and deepens into how flexible we can be in our ability to communicate ideas.

Different presentations and different audiences shape the outcome of our efforts. Therefore, having a basic understanding of how to connect, raise awareness, and empathize with people can be key ingredients for your career as a presenter. A word of advice: success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes dedication and patience to build communication skills . Don’t condition your work to believe you will be ready “someday”; it’s best to practice and experience failure as part of the learning process.

PowerPoint 101: The Ultimate Guide for Beginners

In order to deeply understand this presentation design software, you need to recognize its main components. Now it's time to learn about the PowerPoint basics!

A quick note before going any further: when opening PowerPoint, some of the commands in the ribbons will look grayish and won't be highlighted when you hover the mouse over them.

This happens since some commands need to be selected in order to function. For example, if you want to change the color of a text, you first need to select it.

That being said, let's start with this Guide for PowerPoint beginners:

PowerPoint Main Window

The first aspect to learn is PowerPoint Main Window. To facilitate the explanation, we've organized its main elements with numbers from 1 to 10:

components of PowerPoint window

Based on that, the main components of PowerPoint window are the following:

1. Quick Access Toolbar: allows you to customize commands to have them at hand. You only have to select it and go to "More commands."

2. Title Bar: shows you the name of your file and other "Suggested options" like Slide Master View . These options will vary depending on the use you give to the commands.

3. File Tab: you will see the Home Menu (PowerPoint backstage) by selecting it. There, you can create a new presentation, save it, print it, export it, and many other options.

4. The Ribbon: it's where PowerPoint tabs and tools are. These tools can also be called "commands" or “features.”

5. More Button or Down Arrow: these arrows allow you to view more tools or layout options in PowerPoint.

6. Slides Pane: shows your slides in thumbnail size. By right-clicking, you can access additional options for customizing each slide. Perfect for PowerPoint beginners!

7. Slide: PowerPoint's blank canvas and the frame to be seen when presenting the file.

8. Placeholders: they are dotted boxes that will store your content.

9. Status Bar: allows you to view the slide number, grammatical errors, speaker notes, and the comments on your file.

10. Zoom: allows you to enlarge or minimize your PowerPoint workspace. The range goes from 10 to 400%.

PowerPoint Tabs

The PowerPoint tabs are the control desk of your presentation . Since PowerPoint's features are too many, they're organized in tabs.

You can come and go between tabs as you need. Once you click on a tab, it will open its ribbon, and there, you'll be able to see all the tools related to that particular category.

This PowerPoint tutorial for beginners will give you an overview of all PowerPoint tabs . Pay attention to the following list:

  • Transitions Tab

5. Animations Tab

A PowerPoint 101 Guide wouldn't be that useful with no examples. So, if you enjoy the step-by-step guides, this section is for you.

Below, we'll show you how to make a simple PowerPoint presentation. But first, here are some tips to be more efficient in the process:

  • Be clear about what type of presentation you're going to create (is it corporate, playful, or more creative?).
  • Make a draft with the most important information you need to add and, thus, generate a good structure in your presentation .
  • Get inspired by examples on the internet , but adapt them to your needs and audience.
  • If you will create a business presentation, keep in mind your brand identity .
  • Make sure your PowerPoint works , you may need to update to the latest version or pay for the subscription.

Step 1: Make a draft to structure your presentation

As we said before, writing a draft or script of your content will be vital to start on the right foot as a PowerPoint beginner.

This advice is so important that we choose it as the first step to learning how to make a PowerPoint presentation. Remember: Planning is key!

draft to structure a presentation in PowerPoint

Regarding the process of planning, we share some good practices:

  • If your presentation will be very long , write down all subtitles and content in a Word document. This will help you organize your ideas and give a correct sequence to your narrative. In addition to avoiding redundancies in the message you want to communicate.
  • If your presentation will use many visual resources , we recommend choosing high-quality images. This will help you have a starting graphic base. Some good free image repositories are Freepick , Unsplash , and Adobe Stock .
  • If your presentation is based on data , have all your results summarized or your most relevant conclusions at hand. The idea of making a PowerPoint presentation is to show your information in the simplest way possible for your audience.

Step 2: Create a new document in PowerPoint

Once you check that all the functions are working fine with the software, please open it and go to the File tab. If you've ever used Word or Excel, you'll probably find this Home Menu familiar.

In short, this is the main page of PowerPoint, where you can create a new presentation or open an older one. Let's see:

how to create a new document in PPT

  • If you don't find the presentation you're looking for, click on the “Open” option at the left bar and find older files.
  • Don't forget to save your presentation with a relatable name so you won't lose sight of it!

Step 3: Choose the perfect design for your presentation

With your information ready in a draft, it's time to choose the design of your PowerPoint slide deck. You must imagine that the available design options are endless!

How to Create Effective and Engaging Training Presentations?

presentation for learning

“Did you know businesses that invest in comprehensive training programs see a 24% higher profit margin compared to those that spend less on training?”

Training presentations are not just a formality in today’s workplace they are a strategic investment for improving employee productivity and a company’s bottom line.

Training presentations are designed to teach employees specific skills, knowledge, or procedures necessary for their roles within an organization. They cover topics ranging from onboarding to technical skill building to ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

However, creating a training presentation as simple as a few bullet points on a presentation slide doesn’t cut it today.

Modern training presentations need to be engaging, interactive, and tailored to employees’ diverse learning styles. They should include multimedia elements like voiceovers, videos, animations, and interactive quizzes to maintain employees attention and enhance information retention. Additionally, incorporating real-world scenarios and hands-on activities can make the training more relevant and practical.

In other words, the days of monotonous, one-size-fits-all presentations are over training needs to be dynamic, data-driven, and designed with the end user in mind.

In this blog, we will explore the benefits of training presentations, tips for creating an effective training presentation, and alternative approaches to making training more effective.

presentation for learning

Creating effective employee training presentations significantly impacts productivity, employee engagement, and overall business success. Here is how it delivers:

Effective training presentations combine visuals, storytelling, and interactive elements to cater to various learning styles (visual or auditory). This multimodal approach enhances the understanding and retention of information. How?

Interactive elements, like quizzes, real-world examples, and discussions, encourage active participation. This helps solidify learning as employees are not just passive recipients in the learning process. When employees see how the information applies to their daily tasks, they are more likely to remember and utilize it. It also makes the learning process more engaging.

Quality training presentations can improve job satisfaction by making employees feel valued and invested. When employees see that their employer is committed to their development, they are more likely to stay with the company.

For example, regular professional development workshops and career advancement training presentations can show employees a clear path for growth within the company, increasing their loyalty and reducing turnover rates.

Regular training sessions can help employees develop and refine their skills, leading to improved job performance and higher quality of work. They can also stay updated on current industry trends and adapt to changes in emerging technologies.

An effective training deck often includes assessment tools, such as quizzes and feedback forms, which help employers measure the effectiveness of the training session and identify areas for improvement.

Types of Training Presentation

Training presentations can be categorized into various types based on their content, delivery methods, and objectives. Here are some common types:

Informative presentations are designed to educate and inform the audience about a specific topic, providing them with detailed knowledge, facts, and insights. It is concise and to the point. The primary goal is to enhance understanding and awareness rather than to persuade or entertain. Informative presentations are the verbal and visual equivalent of a written report.

A good example of an informative presentation is an ‘employee benefits’ presentation that explains what benefits employees receive, how these benefits work, where employees can find more information, and so on.

A skill development training program is designed to enhance the specific abilities and competencies of employees within an organization. These presentations aim to improve job performance, foster professional growth, and equip employees with the necessary skills to meet current and future job requirements.

Skill development training presentations can range from technical skills to soft skills, depending on the needs of the organization and its employees.

Imagine you have to present your company to potential clients, and you need to convince them that your product is the best fit for their needs. A persuasion presentation is what you have to create.

Selling or persuasive presentations are designed to influence the audience’s beliefs or behaviors, with the ultimate goal of convincing them to take a specific action or adopt a particular viewpoint. They often present a problem and explain the solution using data.

These presentations are commonly used in sales and marketing to persuade an audience to buy a product, support a cause, or agree with a particular argument. The success of a persuasive presentation hinges on the presenter’s ability to effectively communicate key messages, address objections, and motivate the audience to take action.

A progress or reporting training presentation is used to update stakeholders, team members, or management on the progress of a project, initiative, or ongoing activities within an organization. These presentations typically include key performance indicators (KPIs), milestones achieved, challenges encountered, and plans for future actions, providing transparency, accountability, and visibility into the status and performance of the project or initiative.

Decision-making training presentations help individuals develop essential skills and competencies for making effective decisions in various contexts. The aim is to empower participants to make informed, rational decisions that align with their goals and objectives. These presentations share a problem, solution options, and their outcomes, helping speed along the process.

Let’s say a company is looking to improve engagement on its social media channels. They can host giveaways, dedicate more resources to creating Facebook posts or Instagram stories, and research the audience or competitors to see how they can improve to achieve this goal. However, a marketing campaign plan presented as a presentation can help inform and guide everyone involved in the meeting about the details of the problem, different options, and possible outcomes, helping them make informed decisions on how to move forward.

Designed to provide new hires with a structured introduction to an organization, its culture, policies, procedures, and expectations, an employee onboarding presentation is a vital component of the onboarding process. It familiarizes new employees with their roles, responsibilities, and the broader context of the organization, facilitating a smooth transition and helping them integrate into the company and become productive members of the team as quickly as possible.

Tips to Create Effective Training Sessions

An “effective presentation” is the right balance of two elements: the content and how it is delivered. The latter is where the real magic happens. A lot relies on how information is presented. It needs to be engaging, informative, and easily understood by the audience. Here are some tips to put together an impressive training presentation:

Start by researching the demographics, experience levels, and learning preferences of your audience. With this understanding, you can clearly define what you want your audience to learn or achieve by the end of the presentation. After all, clear learning objectives are the foundation of any successful training presentation.

For example, if you are creating a training presentation on improving customer service skills, a well-defined objective would be that by the end of the presentation, participants should be able to handle customer complaints effectively and use active listening techniques to enhance customer satisfaction.

Step two is to create engaging content that captures and maintains the audience’s attention throughout the training presentation. Instead of displaying a slideshow with a lot of text and little to no images, use a mix of high-quality images, infographics, short videos, and animations to illustrate key points and explain difficult concepts. Integrate audio clips, such as voiceovers, to add variety and depth to the content. Too much text can lead to an information overload that can cause participants to zone out. Whereas, a visually appealing presentation with a compelling narrative can keep the audience hooked from start to finish.

Frame your content within a narrative structure to make it more relatable and memorable. Start with a compelling introduction that outlines what the audience can expect from the training course. Organize the main content into sections that include the problem or challenge, present the solution, and highlight the outcomes. Conclude by summarizing the presentation in key points and provide a call to action or next steps. Sequentially structure the content to make it easier for learners to follow and understand.

To make on the job training presentations more engaging, include activities such as quizzes, group discussions, and exercises that encourage active learning. Ask questions to the audience and encourage discussions to make the session interactive. These allow participants to apply their knowledge and receive immediate feedback, enhancing retention and understanding.

Not everyone absorbs information in the same way, so by switching up the format of the session, you’re likely to reach more people.

Another important tip is to ensure each slide looks cohesive and aligned with the overall message of your training. Consistent slides help the audience focus on the content rather than being distracted by varying formats or styles. Choose one or two fonts for the entire presentation, typically one for headings and another for body text. Stick to a limited color palette that reflects your brand’s colors. Use consistent layouts for similar types of slides. For example, all title slides, content slides, and image slides should have the same layout. Remember to strike a balance between using brand elements effectively and avoiding overwhelming the audience with excessive visual elements.

Make Training Presentations More Engaging with Murf AI

Integrating voiceovers into training presentations elevates engagement, comprehension, and retention. Yet, the conventional method of recording and embedding voiceovers is costly and time-intensive and outdated in today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world. This is where text to speech platforms like Murf come into play. Employing cutting-edge algorithms, these tools provide a more efficient, cost-effective, and versatile alternative for  adding audio narration to presentations .

Let’s see how:

Murf automates the process of creating voiceovers by quickly converting text to realistic speech , saving significant time and effort. Users simply have to upload their presentation in jpg/jpeg/MP4 format on Murf Studio, type in their script or voiceover narrative to Murf’s text editor, choose an AI voice, customize features such as emphasis , pause, and pronunciation to add more depth , and click on ‘Build Audio’ to render the final voiceover.

Once recorded, audio files are static and difficult to edit or update. Any changes to the PowerPoint presentation content may require re-recording the entire audio track. However, Murf enables users to make changes to the script of their training material and regenerate the audio output quickly.

Murf seamlessly integrates with popular presentation software, such as Google Slides or PowerPoint slides, making the process of creating engaging presentations much easier.

Murf offers over 120+ high-quality, realistic, human-like voices that help capture and maintain the audience’s attention more effectively. The human-like intonation, rhythm, nuances, and emotions make the content more engaging and enjoyable to listen to, keeping participants focused throughout the presentation.

Users can choose from various voice options, including gender, age, and voice styles, to match the tone and style of the presentation. Modifying the pitch, speed, pause, emphasis, and pronunciation of the audio output allows users to fine-tune the narration to suit their preferences and the presentation’s specific requirements.

Murf offers AI voices in over 20 global languages, making the presentation accessible to a wider audience. Regardless of geographical location or native language, participants can access training materials in their preferred language, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder learning and comprehension.

Don’t let outdated methods hinder the effectiveness of your training initiatives. Embrace the power of Murf to  transform your training presentations into engaging  and impactful learning experiences. Try Murf today and take your training presentations to the next level!

How do you structure a training presentation?

A well-structured, good training presentation includes an introduction, main content sections, and a conclusion. Begin by outlining the learning objectives and providing an overview of what participants can expect. Then, organize the main content into sections, each addressing a specific topic or learning point. Incorporate interactive elements, such as quizzes or group activities, to engage participants throughout the presentation. Finally, conclude by summarizing key points and reinforcing the main takeaways.

What content should be included in a training presentation?

The content of a corporate training or business presentation should align closely with the learning objectives and the needs of the audience. It should cover essential information, concepts, and relevant skills, including background information, step-by-step procedures, best practices, case studies, and real-world examples. Additionally, consider incorporating multimedia elements like images, videos, or animations to enhance understanding and engagement.

How can visuals enhance a training presentation?

Visuals make complex information easier to understand and more memorable. They help reinforce key concepts, illustrate processes or procedures, and break up text-heavy presentation slides. Visuals such as charts, graphs, diagrams, and infographics can help convey data or statistics in a clear and engaging way. Additionally, incorporating images, videos, or animations can capture participants’ attention and stimulate visual learners.

How long should a training presentation be?

The ideal length of a training presentation can vary depending on the complexity of the topic, the learning objectives, and the audience’s attention span. It’s always best to keep the PowerPoint presentations concise and focused, aiming for a duration that allows participants to absorb and retain information effectively without feeling overwhelmed or disengaged. As a guideline, consider breaking the presentation into shorter modules or segments, each lasting no more than 20-30 minutes, with breaks in between to maintain participants’ attention and focus.

How can Murf’s voiceover help in creating engaging training presentations?

With a wide range of high-quality, human-like voices in 20+ languages and customizable options, Murf helps users create dynamic and engaging training business presentations. Modifying the pitch, speed, pause, emphasis, and pronunciation of the audio allows users to fine-tune the narration to suit their preferences and the presentation’s specific requirements. Users can also choose from various voice options, including gender, age, and voice styles, to match the tone and style of the presentation.

Creating engaging teacher presentations: tips, ideas, and tools

Get your team on prezi – watch this on demand video.

Anete Ezera August 21, 2024

Teacher presentations should effectively convey information, engage students, and enrich the learning process. While business presentations often focus on sales or data analysis, educational presentations aim to foster comprehension and spark curiosity. This article delves into the differences between teacher presentations and other presentation types, provides practical tips for educators, and shares design strategies for creating engaging teacher presentations. Additionally, we’ll highlight Prezi , a tool known for its format that offers a refreshing take on educational presentations.

Understanding teacher presentations

Purpose and audience.

The main objective of a teacher presentation is to educate. Whether the presentations are used to introduce new ideas, revisit old topics, or help students understand complex concepts, the main aim is to make the content easy to understand and interesting. In contrast, business presentations usually seek to convince or update stakeholders. A teacher presentation is tailored for the student audience. Ultimately, it should accommodate learning preferences, keep students engaged, and promote participation.

Design and structure

When preparing a teacher presentation, it’s crucial to maintain simplicity. Steer clear of overcrowding slides with information or incorporating flashy visuals that could divert attention from the main message. Opt for a balanced layout that leverages visuals to complement the delivery rather than overshadowing it. Using Prezi , with its non-linear format, empowers teachers to create compelling presentations that flow seamlessly and engage students effectively.

Tips for creating effective teacher presentations

1. know your audience.

Knowing the age, background knowledge, and learning preferences of your students is essential when creating a teacher presentation. Customize your material to suit their requirements, making sure it strikes a balance between being overly complicated and overly simplistic. When presenting to students, make sure to include plenty of visuals and interactive features, and focus on providing in-depth explanations and fostering discussions.

2. Focus on clarity and simplicity

Avoid cluttering your presentation with too much text or too many graphics. Use bullet points to break down information and keep the slides clean. Remember, presentation is a tool to support your teaching, not to replace your voice. The content on your slides should be clear, concise, and directly related to your lesson objectives.

3. Use engaging visuals and media

Using aids like pictures, videos, and diagrams can help improve comprehension and memory of information. Prezi enables you to design captivating presentations with zoom features that assist students in engagingly exploring the material. In contrast to slide decks, Prezi’s canvas offers a natural progression of content, simplifying the task of emphasizing relationships between ideas.

4. Encourage interaction

Incorporate interactive elements into your presentation to keep students engaged. Ask questions, use polls, or include discussion points that require student participation. Prezi’s format supports this by allowing teachers to zoom in on specific points for discussion, making the presentation feel more like a conversation than a lecture.

5. Rehearse and time your presentation

Practicing your presentation ensures that you can deliver it smoothly and confidently. Time your presentation to fit within the class period, leaving room for questions and discussions. A well-timed teacher presentation keeps students engaged and allows for a natural flow of information.

Things to keep in mind when creating a teacher presentation

When preparing a teacher presentation, it’s important to concentrate on developing a useful resource that improves student’s understanding. Here are some dos and don’ts to consider, especially when incorporating images and text, and designing the layout:

Teacher presentation dos:

Use high-quality visuals: Include clear, high-resolution images and graphics that support your lesson content. Visual aids can significantly improve understanding, especially for visual learners. Infographics, charts, and diagrams can be powerful tools to illustrate complex concepts.

Keep text minimal: When creating slides, opt for bullet points and concise phrases. Ensure that your slide content supports your spoken presentation rather than duplicating it. Also, highlight the points that students should keep in mind.

Incorporate multimedia: Use videos, audio clips, and animations where appropriate. These elements can help bring your lesson to life and maintain student interest. However, ensure that any multimedia used directly relates to and enhances the lesson.

Ensure consistent design: Maintain a consistent design throughout your presentation. Use the same font, color scheme, and layout style across all slides. Consistency helps create a professional look and makes the presentation easier to follow.

Use contrasting colors: Choose colors that contrast well, especially between text and background. This ensures that your content is easily readable, even from the back of the classroom. For example, dark text on a light background works well, as does light text on a dark background.

Teacher presentation don’ts:

Avoid overloading slides with information: Avoid overcrowding a slide with information. Too much content on one slide can be daunting for students, and it may distract from the key messages you intend to communicate. Strive for a clear design instead.

Don’t use distracting fonts or colors: Avoid using fonts or colors that clash. Opt for fonts and colors that improve visibility without taking attention from the content. Limit yourself to two or three fonts, and avoid using more than four colors in your presentation.

Don’t overuse animations or transitions: Avoid using too many animations or transitions when switching between slides. Although these elements can make the presentation engaging, excessive movement might become a distraction and take away from the educational material. It’s best to use them with intent.

Avoid irrelevant visuals: Avoid adding any pictures or illustrations that aren’t closely tied to the lesson. Even though visuals can improve a presentation, unrelated ones might perplex students and lessen the significance of your points.

Don’t neglect accessibility: Remember to take into account the learning requirements of students. Make sure your presentation is easy for all students to access by using clear fonts, including text for images, and providing transcripts for any video or audio materials.

By following these guidelines, you can create a teacher presentation that not only looks good but also effectively conveys your lesson material. Keep in mind that the aim is to leverage visuals and design features to enrich learning rather than detract from the information.

Exploring teacher presentation tools: spotlight on Prezi

When it comes to creating captivating teacher presentations, selecting the right tool is key. Although PowerPoint and Google Slides are commonly used, Prezi presents an option that can revolutionize the way educators deliver information.

What makes Prezi stand out?

Prezi’s unique presentation style allows educators to deliver information in a more captivating manner. Rather than following a slide progression, Prezi empowers teachers to explore various aspects of their presentations by zooming in and out, creating a storytelling experience rather than a traditional lecture. This method can engage students effectively and simplify subjects by visually emphasizing the relationships among concepts.

Prezi AI generated presentation example about visual storytelling

According to research from Prezi, this format is more engaging and memorable compared to traditional slide-based presentations. The study found that Prezi presentations are 25% more effective in keeping audience attention and 20% more effective in making content memorable.

Examples of engaging teacher presentations using Prezi

To illustrate how Prezi can be used effectively in the classroom, here are a few teacher presentation ideas that stand out:

Additional teacher presentation ideas

Teacher introduction presentation.

At the start of the year, teachers have a chance to introduce themselves to their students. Using platforms like Prezi, educators can create a narrative that showcases their personality, teaching style, and what learners can expect in the course. Incorporating anecdotes and engaging elements helps in building a rapport with students from the beginning.

Interactive lesson recaps

To enrich learning, think about using Prezi for making summaries of lessons. When wrapping up a unit or lesson, a recap presentation can go over aspects, pose queries, and even incorporate a quiz to improve comprehension. This method strengthens the content and maintains student interest and active participation in their educational journey.

Virtual field trips

The increasing use of tools in education has made virtual field trips more popular as a means to explore the world without leaving the classroom. Teachers can now create tours using platforms such as Prezi, giving students a look at different locations and providing them with an engaging learning experience that improves their knowledge of geography, history, and science subjects.

presentation for learning

Try Prezi for your next teacher presentation

In summary, preparing a teacher presentation entails capturing the needs of your audience, emphasizing clarity, promoting interaction, and sharpening your delivery skills. Through platforms such as Prezi, educators can enhance their presentations to captivate students with engaging content. Whether you’re introducing yourself at the beginning of the year, revisiting topics, or guiding students through a virtual excursion, a thoughtfully prepared presentation can enrich the learning experience and leave a lasting impact on your teaching.
