On this page:
Upload videos to My Media
Publish videos to the media gallery in bulk, enable and disable comments and moderation, add video from my media to the media gallery, upload videos directly to the media gallery, approve pending uploads in moderated galleries.
- Organize content in Canvas with channel playlists
Use the Embed Kaltura Media tool in the Canvas Rich Content Editor
Kaltura 's integration with Canvas consists of three primary tools that make it possible to upload and share video, audio, and image files within any Canvas class:
- My Media is a searchable repository for viewing and managing your personal media content.
- Media Gallery is a searchable gallery of media content assigned to one or more courses.
- Embed Kaltura Media is a tool in the Canvas Rich Content Editor for embedding Kaltura content wherever the editor is available.
For more, see the Kaltura Video App for Canvas User Guide .
Use My Media
Your My Media repository gives you direct access to your personal media collection, including both unpublished and published content. When you upload content to My Media, you can then publish it to multiple classes at once or embed it within the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE) .
To upload a video to My Media:
In the Canvas global navigation menu, choose Kaltura: My Media .
If prompted to authorize Canvas to access your Kaltura account, choose Authorize .
- On the "My Media" screen, open the Add New menu and select Media Upload .
- Select Choose a File to Upload , locate the file on your computer, and then select it. Kaltura will display a green progress bar as the file uploads.
- On the "Upload Media" page, confirm or update the display name ("Name") for the uploaded field and optionally enter a description and tags.
- Choose Save .
- By default, the video is private and can only be viewed by you. To publish to the Media Gallery in one or more Canvas courses, choose Published . Kaltura will show a list of courses you are enrolled in. Check the desired classes and choose Save .
Your My Media repository provides access to the video, audio, and image files you've uploaded to Kaltura via the tools in Canvas, as well as the Kaltura web application, MediaSpace. In My Media, you can select multiple files and publish all of them to the Media Gallery in one or more classes.
To publish in bulk:
- On the "My Media" screen, use the sort, filter, and search options at the top to locate the items you want to publish.
- For each item you want to publish, check the box to the left of the thumbnail to select it. After selecting all the items you want to publish, open the Actions menu and choose Publish .
- Kaltura will show you a list of courses you are enrolled in. Check the desired classes and choose Save . The files will now appear in the Media Gallery for the courses you selected. Note: If you select many courses, files belonging to courses that appear later in the alphabet may not be published to the My Media gallery.
Use the Media Gallery
Every course site in Canvas has its own Media Gallery. Anyone in the class can upload and/or publish files to the Media Gallery, as well as add comments to files. If needed, instructors can disable commenting and turn on a moderation feature, which then requires files to be approved by an instructor before they are visible to the entire class.
To enable or disable comments and/or moderation:
- In the course navigation menu of your Canvas course, choose Kaltura: Media Gallery . Note: If Kaltura: Media Gallery is not available in the course navigation menu, an instructor will need to add it via Settings > Navigation . For more, see How do I manage Course Navigation links?
- On the "Media Gallery" screen, open the Actions menu and choose Edit .
- On the "Edit Media Gallery" screen, check the boxes in the "Options" section to enable moderation ( Moderate content... ) and/or comments ( Enable comments... ).
You can add any media that you've uploaded to My Media to a course Media Gallery. To add media to the Media Gallery:
- On the "Media Gallery" screen, choose Add Media .
- On the "Add Media" screen, use the sort, filter, and search options at the top of the screen to locate the item(s) you want to add to the current gallery.
A blue progress bar will display. When all items have been added, you will be returned to the main "Media Gallery" page.
To upload videos directly to a course Media Gallery:
- In the course navigation menu of your Canvas course, choose Kaltura: Media Gallery . Note: If the Kaltura: Media Gallery is not available in the course navigation menu, an instructor will need to add it via Settings > Navigation . For more, see How do I manage Course Navigation links?
- On the "Add Media" screen, open the Add New menu and choose Media Upload .
If moderation is enabled in your Media Gallery, student contributions to the Gallery must be approved by an instructor or TA. To approve pending files:
- On the moderation page, select each thumbnail to view the file. Choose Approve to add the file to the Media Gallery or Reject to reject and remove it. You can also remove or reject files in bulk by checking the boxes to the left of each thumbnail and then choosing Approve or Reject at the top of the screen.
You can embed Kaltura video, audio, and image files in any Canvas tool that uses the Rich Content Editor, such as Pages, Assignments, Quizzes, and so on.
To embed a Kaltura file:
- In Canvas, open the tool and item where you want to embed the Kaltura media.
- Place your cursor where you want the embedded file to appear.
- To select from My Media, choose My Media at the upper left, locate the item from the list, open the Select menu next to the item, and select the desired size for the embedded object.
- To select from the class Media Gallery, choose Media Gallery at the upper left, locate the item from the list, open the Select menu next to the item, and select the desired size for the embedded object.
- Open the Add New menu and select Media Upload .
- Choose Back to browse and embed .
- Locate the file you just uploaded in My Media. It should be at the top of the list.
- Open the Select menu next to the item, and select the desired size for the embedded object.
- You'll be returned to the editor and a preview of your file will appear. Note: The size of the preview may not be indicative of the size of the video once the content has been saved.
- If you wish, continue to edit the page. Remember to save or submit it when you are finished.

Working with Video (Kaltura, Canvas, Zoom, and PowerPoint)
Embedding a video from Kaltura into Canvas
In Canvas, you can embed a video from Kaltura into Assignments, Discussions, or anywhere you have access to a text box with the rich content editor . The rich content editor (RCE) is the toolbar at the top of a text box that shows you formatting options such as bold, italics, font size, list formats, etc.
Instructions
- Your video will be placed in the text editor. You can add any necessary text below your video and then click “Post Reply,” “Save,” or “Next” as appropriate.
If your video has been recently uploaded to Kaltura you will see a “media is being processed” animation where you expect your video to be.
Processing time depends on the length of the video and the number of other videos Kaltura is processing. It will appear once it has completed processing, though you may need to refresh your page to see it. You can embed a video that is still processing in Kaltura.

Kaltura - Adding Kaltura Media to a Canvas Course
This tutorial will cover the process of adding Kaltura media to a Canvas course. For guidance on adding media to Kaltura, please consult the Uploading Media to Kaltura in Canvas tutorial .
Kaltura media can be added anywhere in the course where the Rich Content Editor appears. The Rich Content Editor can be used in Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Quizzes, and Syllabus. The recommended way to share a video file with your course is to add it to a new Page. That page can then be added to modules and organized in a sequence. If you don’t need to organize your videos or add them to modules, you may consider using the Kaltura Media Gallery for a more streamlined approach to sharing your content with students.
Note: My Media is a private user-specific video repository. Any media published only to My Media is not visible to anyone else in the course until you add it to a Page, Announcement, Discussion, or other published content visible to students.
Navigate to the part of your course where you would like to add the media. You can insert Kaltura media anywhere there is a Rich Content Editor (Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Quizzes, and Syllabus).
Select the Apps icon .
Choose Embed Kaltura Media .
The Embed Kaltura Media dialog box will open. If you have already uploaded the content you wish to use via My Media, locate it under My Media and choose Select .
For guidance on uploading media to Kaltura, see the Uploading Media to Kaltura in Canvas tutorial .
If you have previously uploaded content to Kaltura, the media is still available under the Shared Repository tab. Select it, and search for your content, then choose Select to add the media.
The video will now appear in your Rich Content Editor window. Select Save to save your new content item.

Kaltura: Upload and Share Media
Last Updated Friday, May 3, 2024, at 4:29 pm
Uploading/sharing the file
- Yes, it's already uploaded to My Media. Please proceed to the directions entitled "Upload and Embed Media in Canvas Course."
- No, I need to upload it to Kaltura My Media (continue to the next question).
- Yes! Save a step by uploading and embedding your media at the same time. Check out the section called "Upload and Embed Media in a Canvas Course."
- No; I don't know or am not sharing it in Canvas at all. See the section called, "Upload media to your Kaltura repository, not to a specific course."
Upload and Embed Media in a Canvas Course
- Log in to Canvas in a browser (Google Chrome or Firefox are preferred) and access the Canvas area in which you are sharing/embedding your media (for example, navigate to the specific assignment or page).
- Click Edit or Reply to access the Rich Content Editor.
- To upload a file, click the + Add New button found on the top right of the page.
- If this is the first time using the uploading feature, check the box to agree to the terms and conditions.
- On the Upload Media page, drag and drop your file or click the blue button “+Choose a file to upload."
- Find the file on your computer and double-click or click "Open" to upload.
- The blue progress bar will turn green when the upload is complete. Large files may take minutes to upload. TIP: Kaltura has a 2GB limit, but sometimes the Firefox browser will allow larger uploads. A good Wi-Fi connection is very helpful.
- Change the name of the file to accurately represent the video content. TIP: If you are uploading a video created by a Kaltura recording tool, it will automatically default to a date and timestamp. It is helpful to determine a naming convention that makes sense for the organization of your files (such as Course #_unit/assignment) is recommended.
- Choose Player: This allows you to choose which player you would like to use. Choices range from the default player, download and share player, simplified player, and transcript player. Unless options are needed, most embeds should use the default player.
- Max Embed Size: The size in which the media player can be selected. The larger the number the larger the video will embed. Choices for embed sizes are: 400x225 (recommended), 608x342 (half page), and 900x507 (full page). TIP: All players include a full-screen viewing button.
- If you would like all videos to embed within the settings selected, click the "Set as my default setting for media type: video" box.
- Finish editing the Canvas item and select Post, Save, or Save and Publish.
Embed Previously Uploaded Media in Canvas
- Access the Canvas item in which you are sharing/embedding your media (such as a specific assignment, discussion, or page).
- Click Edit, if you are editing a page, discussion, assignment or announcement to access the Rich Content Editor. TIP: If you are replying to a discussion post, select "Reply," to access the Rich Content Editor.
- Find the file you want to embed in your list of media. The most recently added are at the top.
- Before you embed your media, click the gear icon to set up default settings for all media.
- Click the blue "Embed" button in the embed settings popup or the "Save and Embed" button found within the My Media integration popup.
Upload Media to Your My Media Repository in Canvas, Not to a Specific Course
- Log in to Canvas.
- Select Media Upload.
- On the Upload Media page, click Choose a file to upload.
- Find the file on your computer and double-click the file or click Open to upload.
- The blue progress bar will turn green when the upload is complete. Large files may take minutes to upload.
- Edit the name of the file by selecting inside the Name box. TIP: If you are uploading a video created by a Kaltura recording tool, it will automatically default to a date and timestamp. It is helpful to determine a naming convention that makes sense for the organization of your files (such as Course #_unit/assignment) is recommended.
- Add a brief video description within the textbox provided. This provides a general overview or purpose of the video.
- Add a tag to help identify a course in which this video relates (i.e. COURSE#). Tags allow owners and viewers to easily search for and find a video.
- Keep the publishing status marked as "private." This allows the media page to be visible to the content owner and the selected viewers (such as students in the course in which the video is embedded) to see the video. If you select "published," media will only be published to the course(s) selected. In this instance, the video will need to be published in a new course every semester.
- Select Save.
- Optional: Once the video is saved, you will have the option to +Add Collaborator. This can be used to add others to your video as either co-editors, co-publisher, or co-viewers. To learn more, follow the instructions for Adding a Collaborator to a Kaltura Video: https://kb.uwec.edu/articles/kaltura-adding-a-collaborator-to-a-kaltura-video.
Share a URL or Download Media
- Login to Canvas
- Find the media you want to share.
- Click on the thumbnail or the name to open the media file.
- Once you have clicked on the media, a download and share icon will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Creating a Video Response with Kaltura
Canvas provides the options to respond to discussions, assignments, and announcements using text, media uploads, or videos recorded within Canvas. I'm going to use a reading response discussion as a sample to demonstrate the process of recording a video in Canvas using Kaltura.
NOTE: Canvas does have a native recording system, but people have reported issues with it, so Kaltura is the safest method for this type of response.
To begin your response, click in the Reply field. This will bring up a response entry box. If you want to type something into this field, you can. To start a video, click the plug-in icon (shaped like a plug and circled below), and choose "Embed Kaltura Media" from the drop down menu.
Click the "+Add New" button in the pop-up window that appears.
Select "Express Capture" from the drop down menu that appears.
This will open a video window. You may need to scroll down within this pop-up. If you have multiple webcams and microphones and don't like the ones that Kaltura selects, click on the video camera and microphone icons to select the correct options. When you are ready to begin recording click the red button. Wait for the 3-2-1 countdown and then begin.
Once you have finished, click the red button on the video to stop. The screen will give you the options to record again, download a copy of the video, or use the video you have created. If you are happy enough with the recording, click the "Use This" button.
The pop-up window will allow you to rename your video, scroll down in the window if you want to see the other options. However, you can just click the "</> Save and Embed" button without any adjustments.
This will take you back to the content entry box. You can add text before or after the video by typing into this box. You may need to wait for your video to be processed. Once Canvas is finished, you will see your video in this content entry box. At this point you can click "Post Reply" (the red button at the right below the content entry box) to submit your response.
Uploading Files to Canvas
If you want to upload audio or video files (or any other type files) that you have created outside of Canvas, click on the "Insert" button once you have opened the content editor box. This example uses a reading discussion assignment for demonstration.
Using the drop down menus, navigate to Media > Upload/Record Media.
This will open a pop-up window where you can select your file. Be sure to click the "Submit" button on this window. Then be sure to click the "Post Reply" button when you have finished your response.
NOTE: If you plan to upload audio files, we recommend creating them on your computer, rather than in Canvas, then uploading your files.

Click the Add New Elements tab if not already selected
Select Image from the Basic Content panel
This will insert an image placeholder at your cursor position. Note: You can also search for “image” or, if used recently, it may also appear in Recently Used Tools.
Select the image source where your image is located in the Edit Current Element tab
You may have to click the up arrow next to Change Image to expand the image options. You can choose from:
- User Images : Select the image to upload and embed the image in your Canvas page. If you are choosing an image file from a course other than the current course, you will be prompted to import the file into the current course. Select the destination and click "Copy to Course". This will import the file and update the image source path in the Rich Content Editor, so it is viewable by anyone in the course.

(Optional) Click on Add Link to add a link to the image
Doing so will load the Link tool so that you can update the URL.
Use the Style panel to add borders, shadow, or round the edges
In the style panel you can adjust the dimensions of an image, float an image around text, and specify the maximum width settings.
- Image Alignment floats the image left or right, centers the image, or resets the image to the default alignment.
- Fill Container Width fills the entire width of the container with the image. Max Width Fill will display an image at a set width. The image will be responsive and will reduce in size as your students’ browser size decreases, but it will never expand beyond the size set. This is helpful for images that are not high resolution and may become pixelated as your students’ browser size increases.
- Border Options applies the selected border to the image.
Click Save to keep your changes
The DesignTools Sidebar also provides a panel where you can update alt text (alternative text) for all images embedded on a page. Alt text is an alternative (non-visual) way to describe the meaning of an image. Alt text should be specific and not overly descriptive. Good descriptions are concise, but describe what's in your images accurately enough to understand their context.
Select the page you want to review for Alt Text
Click Edit
Click on the Accessibility/Usability tab
Select Image Alt Checker from the Accessibility panel
The Image Alt Checker interface renders a list of all images found in the page contents. A red border is used to flag any image alt text that should be reviewed.
Scroll through your images to set alt text or mark as decorative
When image alt text is updated, the red borders and warnings will be removed.
Click Save to keep your changes
You can use the DesignTools Sidebar to add an image with captions. Captions allow to you add additional information to an image or better describe what is happening in the photo. An image caption is different from alt text in that it displays on the screen. Alt text is read aloud to someone using assistive technology but is hidden from a sighted user.
Click + Pages
Select Image & Caption from the Basic Content panel
This will insert a placeholder for an image and caption at your cursor position.
Select an image from the Edit Current Element tab
Enter your caption text from the Content Panel
(Optional) Adjust the caption appearance and settings in the Style panel
Once your image is added, you can use the Style panel to set your Caption Style and Border Options.
