Cold Case is a horror investigation thriller, directed by debutant Tanu Balak and starring Prithviraj and Aditi Balan in the lead roles. Written by Sreenath V Nath, Cold Case is shot by Gireesh Gangadharan.
A crime thriller, spun around a horror setting, the film involves the investigation of a complex murder by a journalist, Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan) and ACP M Sathyajith (Prithviraj). The crime that has shaken the entire state affects Medha’s life as she moves to a new rental house that has a demonic possession. What happens when both try to unravel the mystery and where it takes them forms the rest of the plot.
Cold Case is technically ace and gets you involved with its fine making and moving screenplay. Among the best things about the film are the details and the scientific nuances. The writer has sunk his teeth into the forensic and the scientific processes that help dissect a case. Kudos to that effort.
Though the film has fine cinematography and minute details to keep you hooked, it gets itself into trouble with clichés common to thrillers. The supporting cast could have been better. The twist vis-à-vis the antagonist wasn’t exciting and the pivotal point of the climax could have been much better.
Besides the lead actors, the cast includes Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli and Anil Nedumangad. Though the cast was promising, their characterizations could have been stronger for the desired impact.
Gireesh Gangadharan’s cinematography is a big save for this flick. It is one of the ropes that tries to save this flick from falling off the cliff. With his frames, he has poured in the right emotions and tone, making the viewers ready for the next scene. The colour tones work well, though more of the spooky lights and colouring could have helped with the film’s total appearance.
Sreejith V Nath’s screenplay is moving and keeps a hold. But the credits go to not writing exactly, but the technical department. The film is held together by its engaging visuals and story treatment. The premise missed out on an innovative thought and is not impressive enough, ergo making it an average plot.
Tanu Balak’s directorial debut is a decent attempt that can be appreciated for its making and research.

Cold Case treads the thin line between supernatural horror and crime-mystery genres. It is told through two perspectives: the investigative bits via ACP Sathyajith (a suave-but-deadpan Prithviraj Sukumaran) and the paranormal bits via journalist Medha (a sleepwalking Aditi Balan). Cold Case isn't a character-driven film - both Sathyajith and Medha are mere plot-forwarding devices with no real arcs to themselves (wait, Medha's kinda got one that isn't fully explored?). The horror elements of Cold Case backfire big time, right from the props (a funny-looking refrigerator with a bluish backlight) to the generically staged jumpscares. The procedural scenes lack punch while the dialogues come across as highly superficial. The final twist, while not entirely predictable, feels half-baked with lots of missing…

Cold Case movie review: A lousy horror-thriller where Prithviraj and Aditi Balan are sleepwalking
Cold case movie review: this film has a very conventional premise of a dead person seeking justice from beyond the grave or, in this case, out of a rickety fridge..
Cold Case movie star cast : Prithviraj, Aditi Balan Cold Case movie director : Tanu Balak Cold Case movie ratings : 1 star
If director Tanu Balak and writer Sreenath V Nath thought making a film that combines the elements of crime thriller and horror was challenging, they should try writing a review of Cold Case without making it sound like a rant coming from depths of despair. Where does one even begin to complain about this film? Should we begin with the giant plot hole? Or the general pretentious tone of narration? Or the endless flow of logical errors that make a mockery of the audience’s intelligence? How about Tanu Balak’s failure to string together a meaningful sequence of images despite being a cinematographer himself?
Cold Case has a very conventional premise of a dead person seeking justice from beyond the grave or, in this case, from a rickety fridge. The film opens with sequences of rituals of exorcism followed in different religions. It is part of an “investigative” news report about how the dead use the living as the medium to bring those who have wronged them to justice.
The TV show is put together by Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan). She is going through a lean phase, both professionally and personally. It seems her ghost stories are not bringing enough eyeballs for the channel, and she is also in the midst of her divorce. Not long ago, she lost her young sister to suicide. However, she is not troubled by the drop in ratings, her failed marriage or the mysterious death of her sister. She has no inner demons to fight or emotional turmoil to overcome. She makes for an excellent candidate to teach how not to allow personal tragedies affect a good night’s sleep. But, she makes for a poor lead character for a drama.
In a scene, Medha narrates the incidents leading up to the death of her sister in a shockingly casual manner to her lawyer Haritha (Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli). Aditi performs the scene without hinting at any residual pain or regret in her character. Not just Aditi, none of the actors add depth to their characters. Everyone seems to be sleepwalking in the film, including Prithviraj.
A fisherman hauls in a garbage bag, which holds a mutilated skull. The incident captures the media’s attention, forcing the police department to dedicate its best resources to the case. Enter, Prithviraj’s ACP M. Sathyajith. A media-savvy, clean-shaven top cop, who is seemingly still in awe of himself over his recent weight loss. Seriously, Prithviraj seems so preoccupied flaunting his shrunken waistline that his performance takes a back seat. Every scene focuses on how glamorous Prithviraj look in a cop’s uniform as he broods standing at the window of his office, or travelling in his car. None of the actors has really committed to their characters.
The grimness and pretentious tone of the film is a dead giveaway of Sreenath V Nath’s cluelessness about the material he’s dealing with. The screenplay is full of errors that ruins the interest of the audience in the movie. The puzzles are too easy to solve, and narrative errors are so depressingly silly to forgive. The editing senselessly jumps from one scene to another and we are treated to camera movements, which have no meaning and do nothing to improve a mediocre story.

A sequel to Prithviraj's Cold Case: Tanu Balak opens up on ending the film on an uncertain note
Malayalam cinema industry has always warmed up to debutant film makers and writers who prove their mettle in their first movie itself. Latest movie Cold Case starring Prithviraj in the lead role too is directed by a newcomer. The film that was released on the streaming giant Amazon Prime is helmed by Tanu Balak. Though this is his first outing as a director, Tanu is no stranger to the cinema industry.
'Bhramam' is funnier, more wicked than 'Andhadhun': Prithviraj
Shaji Kailas is excited to return to Malayalam after eight years with ‘Kaduva’
Tanu has directed hundreds of advertisements and had wielded camera for many Malayalam movies too. The film maker says he wished to direct a movie only when he wouldn’t be able to resist an amazing screenplay. In a candid interview with Onamanoram, Tanu Balak opens up about Cold Case and his future plans too.
What took you so long to turn into direction?
I have wielded the camera for super hit movies like Train and Of The People. Meanwhile, I mostly did advertisements for television. It is only now that a good screenplay came my way. The script of the movie is penned by Sreenath V Nath. When I showed it to ace cinematographer Jomon T John, he too liked it. It was he who spoke to Prithviraj about this story. Anto Joseph, Sameer and Jomon agreed to jointly bankroll the movie. That is how this movie took shape. I decided to turn to direction when I got a screenplay which I really liked and wished to direct.
The movie has been garnering great reviews. What do you feel?
Everyone feel happiness when they hear great comments about their works. The audience in around 250 countries can watch the movie at the same time since it had an OTT release. Besides, the movie got amazing visibility on the first day itself. Lots of people are calling to congratulate and express their opinion about the film. I am really excited about it. This movie was shot amid the Covid pandemonium. When a movie is released on OTT, huge number of people would watch it on the first day itself and say their comments. It indeed is one of the most amazing advantages of having an OTT release.
Why did you blend the horror and thriller genres in the screenplay?
People are always interested in watching thriller movies. Such movies would instantly attract attention. The initial thread of the movie only had a horror track. It was only later that it got transformed into an investigative thriller. In the plot, two types of investigations happen in a parallel manner. We are not commenting whether any faith or beliefs are right or wrong. Each person can decide based on their own beliefs and conviction.
On one side, an investigation based on scientific facts takes place. It has a full proof approach where faith has no place. In case, I experience paranormal activities as shown in the movie, I would probably die of heart attack. One would experience paranormal activities based on what he/she thinks and believes. One’s imagination can be stretched to any extend. Prithviraj’s character handles the case based on scientific proof until the end of the movie. We had done really good homework before making this movie.
How was your experience filming during the pandemic times?
Everything was well planned as the pandemic restrictions were still on. The crew members had stayed at a single location, without going home or breaching the bubble. On some days, we had to film wearing PPT kits. The indoor scenes were shot first. We had planned to shoot the outdoor scenes and the shots that involve crowds in the end. I must say that there were difficulties. Some of the locations were abruptly turned into containment zones. So, we had to look for new locations. Fortunately, no one in the crew had tested positive while shooting. Everyone was careful and we shot the movie by strictly following the pandemic protocols.
Was Cold Case exclusively shot for OTT?
No, Cold Case isn’t a movie that was shot for OTT. We wanted to have a theater release. This is a movie that has great significance for sound effects. As it is a horror thriller, the sound effects would work only if the movie is enjoyed on big screen. But, no one expected a second wave of Covid 19, right? We decided to go for an OTT release as we realized that it wasn’t possible to release the movie in theaters, in the present situation. OTT too has its own advantages.
Was it difficult to find producers during the pandemic times?
We didn’t face such difficulties as Cold Case is a movie with amazing star value. The project was on as soon as Prithviraj liked the script. There is a scope for business when a big star like him comes on board. Besides, lots of newcomers too have worked in this project. I am proud that a handful of newcomers, including me, have been part of the movie. Producers Anto Joseph, Jomon and Shameer were very supportive.
The story takes place during the Covid times. However, no precautions have been shown in the scenes.
The character uses masks and gloves in the scenes that take place in Varanasi. However, the rest of the plot has been shown as happening during the post Covid times. “This is a work of fiction that takes place in a mask free world that has survived the dreaded pandemic”, is shown before the movie begins. While shooting, we had hoped that we could release the movie when the pandemic subsides and every one walks freely without wearing masks. Unfortunately, we still haven’t been able to survive the pandemic. Besides, this is a movie and a star like Prithviraj cannot be shown as wearing mask in the scenes.
The casting was spot on. How did you manage it?
Aditi Balan’s debut movie Aruvi was noticed in Tamil Nadu and here as well. She has the personality and mannerisms of a journalist. Aditi did a brilliant job playing her character perfectly. Meanwhile, the new artists were cast after screen tests and auditions. So, there is freshness in the casting.
Prithviraj had clear ideas about the movie as soon as he read the script. It was impressive seeing him mouth long dialogues in a single stretch. I have often wondered how he could effortlessly by heart such lengthy dialogues. He is not just an amazing actor but a talented director too. I didn’t have to explain the scenes too much to him. Moreover, that character hasn’t been given any unrealistic superhuman like qualities. The character is designed to perfectly suit the screenplay. Besides, his personal life isn’t shown in the movie. Sathyajith is a brilliant police officer.
Meanwhile, the female lead Medha’s personal life has been shown, just to explain why she is living alone. But, her husband isn’t shown in the movie. We haven’t included any unnecessary character in the film.
The movie ends on an uncertain note. Can we expect a sequel?
I cannot say whether there would be a sequel to Cold Case. It is true that some questions have been left unanswered. It was done deliberately. The movie ends as if the story continues. However, I don’t contemplate a second part as of now. It would happen if it is meant to happen.
What do you have to say about Sreenath as a screenwriter?
Screenwriter Sreenath V Nath is my brother in law. This is mine and his first movie. Both of us live in the same house. So, we discussed a lot while the script was being written. The scientific angle of the movie has been written after doing good research in the forensic and other departments. Lots of data was collected from many places. Both of us had gone together to a few places and offices to collect information. He is the one who penned the script. Meanwhile, I, being the director was able to ask many questions and clarify my doubts. His screenplay was perfect and complete. We didn’t have to rework it.
Did the expenses shoot unexpectedly owing to the pandemic?
No, the expenses didn’t shoot much. It is true that we had faced minor difficulties. We had traveled to Varanasi with a very small group. Travel restrictions were there due to the pandemic. Besides, we were expecting such difficulties. However, we were able to wrap up the filming within the stipulated time itself.
What are your plans for future?
I do not wish to do another movie as soon as my first movie is released. I would commit a film only if I like the script. I had waited for so long only because I was looking for a good script. I am listening to many stories and narrations. But, I would take it up only if I like the theme and the story. I am really happy that my debut movie just got released. Those who have watched the movie is calling me and saying great comments. Now, my main job is speaking to them. Besides, I take rest and sleep a lot. I would request everyone to watch Cold Case and let me know your opinions.

Cold Case(Malayalam) Movie Review
Released in 2021, Cold Case is a Malayalam mystery thriller directed by debutant Tanu Balak. The movie is a touch of supernatural elements with a blend of investigation on the other end. The movie stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Aditi Balan, Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli and Anil Nedumangad in pivotal roles. It is produced by Anto Joseph, Jomon T. John and Shameer Mohammed and the music is composed by Prakash Alex.
Beginning on a confusing note, the story of this movie follows a series of paranormal incidents when a fisherman discovers a human skull scraped in a cover. The case is taken over by a Local Cop, ACP Sathyajith (Prithviraj Sukumaran) and he starts investigating to trace down the people involved in the mysterious muder. The rest of the movie moves on the lines of how the cop deals with the procedural investigation and an interlaced horror element linked with the case.
The major plus of the movie is that, the Director has roped in 3-4 acclaimed Malayali actors in the lead roles including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Aditi Balan, Anil among others. They add much required advantage to the film with their excellent performances. The major plot of the film deals with a mysterious homicide and the consequent horror element. The blend of investigation and horror is fresh to watch.
Minus Points:
Many of them believe in the saying that, if you try too hard you will end up having nothing. In this movie the director tries really hard to infuse a lot of elements like- horror, drama, suspense and other elements but at last ends up overcomplicating the main plot. Anyways the foundation looks promising but unnecessary subplots ruin the flow of events.
The first half has a few intriguing moments here and there, but later on things turn out to be boring and flattering in the latter part. But then, the big disclosure at the end seems to be unrealistic in nature. The formation of the climax also does not guarantee.
On the whole, this Malayalam movie is poorly articulated but still it holds the attention of the audience all the way through, despite its interesting set-up. The main lead delivers a top notch performance and a few scenes in the first half rake up the curiosity factor. But every now and then the tempo keeps dropping down with very few surprise elements.

Cold Case Movie Review: Stiff performances, colourless storytelling
Rating: ( 2 / 5).
Cold Case is yet another film that boasts big names in the cast and technical crew but eventually ends up not doing justice to their stature and talents. It feels more like a TED talk on forensic science than a movie. It takes more delight in relaying information to the audience than moving organically from one plot point to another. You expect engrossing storytelling but what you end up getting is an experience akin to listening to the audiobook version of a crime novel. Or how about a two-hour CID episode with better production values and photography?
Director: Tanu Balak
Cast: Prithviraj, Aditi Balan, Suchitra Pillai
Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video
As in The Priest, Cold Case blends two different genres. It opens with two episodes of exorcism to suggest the possibility of crime-solving through it. We first meet Medha (Aditi Balan), a television journalist grappling with domestic issues and a supernatural presence trapped in her new home. On the other hand, Prithviraj's ACP Sathyajith, a cop, is tasked with uncovering the identity of a skull discovered from the bottom of a lake and, subsequently, the person responsible for the murder. But given the absence of the rest of the remains, the unknown gender of the victim, and lack of an immediately discoverable clue, Sathyajith and team have an extremely challenging job ahead. But they behave as though it isn't.
The best moment in the film involves two characters in opposite parts of the city simultaneously making the same discovery. But there is also the nagging feeling that Cold Case would've been a better film had it concentrated only on the investigation track. After everything is said and done, you ask if the parallel horror track is necessary when Sathyajith can solve everything by himself. You ask why the film had to include Medha and a creepy-looking fridge with, err, a life of its own. (If you had ever switched off your food-laden refrigerator for weeks on account of an emergency and then returned home to find yourself dreading the thought of opening it, some scenes in the film might creep you out.)
I have to admit that the film does a fairly decent job of showing us what routes the investigators would usually take in a one-of-a-kind situation, even though not all of it adds up. To be fair to the film, it manages to keep us curious about where everything is going. It succeeds in concealing the killer's identity till the end. The final twist is not one we see coming from a mile away, but the revelation is only moderately chilling. Despite offering a small degree of satisfaction, the payoff doesn't clear up all loose ends either. We recall the characters bringing up some names, doubts and suspicious behaviour earlier and question their relevance in light of the final developments. After a point, it simply becomes an I-know-someone-who-knows- someone kind of situation. The coincidences seem too convenient. The film's eagerness to get to the final twist comes at the cost of engaging storytelling.
The casting choices in the film rarely make any sense. With everyone acting so stiff and delivering stilted dialogues, it often gets on your nerves. There is the sense of watching the Malayalam-dubbed version of a film made in another language. The characters sound like they stepped out of a Shaji Kailas thriller made post-2000, minus the fiery dialogues. (I don't think adding 'mass' dialogues or fight scenes would've helped the film either.) Imagine listening to a line like, "Let me suggest an officer, one Mr....," in this day and age. A few supporting players like Lakshmipriya Chandramouli, Kannan Nayar, and Srikanth K Vijayan manage to make the best out of the material given to them.
And don't get me started on the other annoying aspects, such as the little girl singing to her creepy-looking doll or the done-to-death Ratsasan -inspired musical box tunes accompanying a kid's voice. How many times are we going to see the same thing? Also, for a "fictional story set in a post-pandemic world where masks are unnecessary" (as said in the opening titles), how come only a couple of characters wear masks but not the others? I give up.
Those familiar with Prithviraj's entire filmography will inevitably compare Cold Case to the far superior thrillers he did in the past, such as Memories or Mumbai Police , in front of which Cold Case looks like a weak, grossly underwhelming experience. In the promos for Cold Case , the makers conveyed the impression of the film being more plot-driven than character-driven. But what do we do when the plot is so colourless?

Where to watch Prithviraj's new Malayalam movie Cold Case
This direct-on-OTT platform release will stream from June 30
Malayalam movies are, for all intents and purposes, the big winners on Indian OTT platforms. And Malayalam actors like Fahadh Faasil and Kunchacko Boban have had great success with direct releases on the OTT space. And Malayalam movies have also made the investigative crime thrillers their own genre in recent times.

Just a few months back we had Mohanlal's much-acclaimed Drishyam-2 becoming a big winner on streaming platform. Now another top star from Malayalam, Prithviraj Sukumaran, has his new film Cold Case --- needless to say, a cop probe story --- ready to stream from June 30.
- Netflix allows partial downloading on Android
- Zee5 launches in the US with 130,000-plus hours of content
What is Cold Case all about
Cold Case is a complex murder case, the investigation of which is taken on by ACP Satyajith, played by Prithviraj. As he chases the mystery, the case takes a rather ‘cold’ turn with emergence of supernatural forces. Thrown into the mis is investigative journalist Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan), who is also out to unearth secrets.
Cold Case is produced by Anto Joseph Films and Plan J Studios, directed by Tanu Balak and written by Sreenath V Nath.
Prithviraj has carved a niche for himself playing different types of police officers. One of his breakthrough movies early in his career was Vargam . That cop story kind of set him on this path, as it were. He has subsequently played myriad cop characters in films like Memories, Mumbai Police, Ravanan, Police, Police .
But in Cold Case , the role is a bit different. Or so he says. "Playing the role of a cop was different this time as all my earlier cop films were character based, but this one is plot based. When I heard the story, it was an immediate yes for me as this is a hybrid genre film that is really well-written. It has been a great learning experience for me as well," Prithviraj said.
Cold Case to stream on Amazon Prime Video
Cold Case will stream on Amazon Prime Video from June 30. Prithviraj's previous releases on Amazon Prime Video Driving Licence and Ayyappanum Koshiyum are hugely popular among the audience.

‘Emilia Pérez' Review: Leading Lady Karla Sofía Gascón Electrifies in Jacques Audiard's Mexican Redemption Musical
SPOILER ALERT: The following review contains some spoilers.
Like a rose blooming amid a minefield, it's a miracle that Jacques Audiard's "Emilia Pérez" exists: a south-of-the-border pop opera about a most unlikely metamorphosis and the personal redemption it awakens in a stone-cold criminal.
With a Palme d'Or already to his name and the cojones to tackle his third movie in a culture and language that are not his own (after "Dheepan" and "The Sisters Brothers"), the director of "A Prophet" takes audiences into the macho realm of Mexican cartels, where Manitas del Monte - a fearsome drug lord with a silver grill and voice like gravel - wants out, not because he's had a crisis of conscience, but because he's decided to embrace his true self … as a woman.
Pardon me if I've mixed up the pronouns there. Audiard's dazzling and instantly divisive film - which stars Zoe Saldaña as the lawyer who helps Manitas transition and Selena Gomez as the mother of their two sons - doesn't strictly adhere to the codes set by GLAAD and other LGBT advocates, and yet, "Emilia Pérez" emerges as a powerful, unfiltered portrait of someone who challenges several stereotypes at once. That's a testament to leading lady Karla Sofía Gascón (who plays Manitas/Emilia) and Audiard's audacity, which had the good sense to incorporate Gascón's personal experience into the character.
The filmmaker got the idea from Le Monde editor Boris Razon's novel "Écoute," wherein the character's mission is but one of countless questions raised about identity (in the book, Manitas wants to become his first love, who was murdered years before). But primarily-Spanish-language "Emilia Pérez" isn't an adaptation so much as a totally different interpretation of that out-there idea: What if you took the poster boy for toxic masculinity and made them a woman - not à la Griselda Blanco ("Cocaine Godmother"), but in such a way that eclipsed the aggressive original persona?
One of the helpful notes the trans community has shared about films such as "Girl" and "The Danish Girl" is that general audiences tend to be more preoccupied with transition itself than the people fulfilled by that process. In "Emilia Pérez," it's critical to the character's journey, but just the first act of a much larger story. Who knows how society will judge Audiard's depiction two years or two decades from now, though the project is consistent with a career spent imagining milieus far from his and immersing audiences in those worlds, without reductive psychology or judgment.
Audiard starts by introducing Saldaña's character, Rita, a defense attorney who helps scumbags go free, justifying her misgivings through song. Overstressed and undervalued, Rita accepts a potential client's shady proposal, which means being driven out to who-knows-where with a hood over her head. Always moving in order to evade potential assassination, Manitas swears Rita to secrecy before telling her why she's been summoned: "I want to be a woman," growls a man who looks like he wouldn't hesitate to have her killed. And then Manitas opens his shirt and reveals his commitment to Rita (but not the camera).
At this point in the film, my political correctness sensors were still wary. Early on, all references to Manitas are masculine, which is true even among the doctors Rita flies around the world to interview. One can easily imagine such an assignment sparking a "Some Like It Hot"-style farce about the Witness Protection Program, and the film still feels like it could go either way (toward triumph or catastrophe) during an early number called "La Vaginoplastia," which suggests "Myra Breckinridge" as Busby Berkeley might have staged it. "Changing the body changes society," Rita sings to the surgeon in Tel Aviv (played by Mark Ivanir), who finally agrees to conduct the procedure, tipping off where the story is headed.
It's not like Manitas can tell anyone what he's doing, counting on Rita to stage his death and relocate his family to Switzerland. In fact, when Emilia reunites with Rita a few years later in London (unrecognizable without her beard), the lawyer is convinced the ex-capo has come to erase the last trace of her past. Instead, Emilia asks Rita to bring her wife/widow Jessi (Gomez) and sons back to Mexico. According to press notes, Gascón (who plays Emilia) still lives with her daughter's mom, and a similar dynamic emerges here, as Emilia presents herself as a long-lost aunt.
The scene that played best at Cannes finds Rita watching this reunion warily, as Emilia welcomes Jessi and the kids back into her life. Will they recognize her? "You smell like papa," one of their sons tells Emilia in a lovely reverse lullaby. "Emilia Pérez" would have been a very different movie if Manitas had found the courage to confide in the family. Not doing so sets the stakes for the rest of the film: Can Emilia continue to serve as their guardian? What happens if Jessi, who thinks she's dead, should run off with new flame Gustavo (Édgar Ramírez)?
The Jessi-Gustavo subplot justifies what's sure to become the film's anthem, Selena Gomez scorcher "El Camino," the lyrics of which translate as "I want to love myself completely" (Clément Ducol and Camille co-wrote the film's songs with Audiard). And where does Rita's personal life fit into all of this? If "Emilia Pérez" weren't a musical, audiences might not accept such a glaring oversight, and yet the form allows Audiard to exclude huge swaths of backstory - like nearly the entirety of Emilia's criminal past. Renouncing her identity as a cartel honcho doesn't mean she wasn't responsible for countless murders in her previous life. Emilia wants to selectively reset what came before, spending the dirty money earned before her transition and lavishing attention on her kids while all but ignoring their mother.
Such double-standards add fascinating dimensions to the film's second half, especially after Emilia decides to start La Lucecita, an NGO designed to help grieving family members find their "disappeared" relatives. In the process, Emilia also finds love. Apart from one scene where Rita worries that Emilia's partner (Adriana Paz) may have figured things out, Audiard doesn't distract himself with that old trope. Again, it would have been nice to see Emilia confide in others, but the film doesn't treat fear of discovery as a point of suspense. Instead, Audiard wonders how much people really change when they transition. In Emilia's case, less than she'd like, but enough to inspire positive change in society.

SLED says concerns over SC election integrity ‘unfounded’ following review
COLUMBIA, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced that agents found that allegations that state agencies were attempting to “illegally register non-citizens to vote” were unfounded following an initial review of the situation.
The situation began earlier this month when State Representative Adam Morgan, a member of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus, said a refugee reached out to him after her family repeatedly received a packet, which included a voter registration declination form, from the South Carolina Medicaid Office.
SLED began investigating after South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster asked them to evaluate the allegations.
SLED’s report explains that the South Carolina Voter Registration form they received asks, “Are you a citizen of the United States of America,” and clearly states in bold, “ DO NOT complete this form ” if they check “No.”
According to SLED’s report, the forms were sent to refugees from Ukraine who were residing with a family member in Spartanburg, SC, through the Uniting for Ukraine program.
Morgan said he’s glad no evidence of fraud was found, but said SLED only addressed part of his concerns.
“How do we fix this issue of state agencies repeatedly sending these forms to non-citizens? They either should not be sending them to non-citizens, definitely not repeatedly. Or, if they are required by federal law, well, my word, change the federal law and at least on the state level add a citizenship question because there’s nothing in the federal law that would prohibit us from adding a citizenship question to these voter declination forms,” Morgan said.
SLED’s report states that individuals received the forms because they were receiving numerous benefits from state agencies, including Security Numbers, Identification Cards, a driver’s license, food stamps and cash assistance for eight months.
SLED’s report also showed that the Legislative Audit Council found no instances where non-U.S. citizens with state IDs or driver’s licenses had voted from 2022 to 2023.
After SLED’s report was released on Thursday, Governor McMaster issued the following statement regarding the situation.
SLED has concluded its investigation into allegations that non-citizens are being provided with voter registration forms. The report confirms the integrity of South Carolina's voter registration system, as previous official audits have confirmed. Read my full statement here: pic.twitter.com/ZmzRXLjTa7 — Gov.
