Research Assistant – Brastorne

Job description.

Gathers data to meet specific project objectives by using various informational sources.

Collects information and establishes a database to catalogue, update and retrieve data. Analyzes data to determine trend, discrepancies or other specific departmental business issues. Coordinates meetings with targeted audiences to identify or clarify departmental issues, which may include committees, consultants, citizen’s groups

Duties and Responsibilities

• Carry out experiments and research according to protocols laid out by CBA
• Collect and log data
• Conduct statistical analyses of data sets
• Prepare graphs and spreadsheets to portray results
• Create presentation slides and posters to help CBA present findings
• Review print and online resources to gather information
• Check facts, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy
• Provide ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researcher and/or supervisor
• Summarize project results
• Prepare progress reports
• Develop or assist in the development of interview schedules; contact potential subjects to introduce and explain study objectives and protocol and to arrange interviews, either in person or by telephone
• Identify and compile lists of potential research subjects in accordance with study objectives and parameters, as appropriate to the individual position

Competencies

•  Analytical skills; Research assistants are often asked to collect and analyse data and to manage and update existing databases.
• Technical skills: Research assistants may need to set up and carry out  surveys
• Observational Skills:  Research assistants need to be able to work in a highly accurate manner, paying close attention to detail and keeping records of their work.
• Time -management skills : When dealing with data and statistics, it’s important to be able to meet project deadlines and manage your time to accomplish your goals.
• Excellent administrative skills
• Knowledge of research methods
• Ability to work under pressure
• Excellent time management skills

Qualification

• diploma from an accredited institution (preference will be social sciences or any related fields)
• certificate in data analytics will be an added advantage

RESEARCH ASSISTANT (1 POSITION)

FACULTY OF MEDICINE

DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

PROJECT PATHWAYSS IN BOTSWANA

Key Performance Areas

The successful appointees will be required to perform tasks necessary for the safe and complete delivery of the procedures outlined in the protocol to the highest standard. Amongst other responsibilities, the appointee will be required to:

• Complete all data entry points as required by the study protocol and data management plan entering this data accurately into the electronic data collection database
• Contribute to the resolution of any ensuing data queries in a timely manner
• Provide regular updates on study progress.
• Communicates with the Researchers for the data collection visit schedule; travels to designated locations to complete on-site data collection visit as scheduled.
• Collects data as per protocol
• Obtain study related samples (e.g., wound swab)
• Provide constructive feedback in terms of logistics related to data collection.

Qualifications and experience

• Diploma/certificate in a health-related subject
• At least a minimum of 2 years’ post qualification experience working as a Research Assistant in a study involving patients (required)
• Certificate in Good Clinical Practice
• Previous work experience in clinical research setting

Competencies

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Excellent time management
• Strong presentation skills
• Computer literate

Duration of contract :12 months

Remuneration :

The research project offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

LIFE AS A RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Being a wildlife researcher in a camp in the middle of the bush takes lot of courage, passion and dedication to collect all the necessary data needed. As a research assistant the main job is to collect data in the field which means spending a couple of hours with the animal (mostly African wild dogs) in any given day in the middle of nowhere, taking photos and recording behavioural observations (collecting data).Identifying each wild dog at an individual level is very important because it gives us the necessary information on which individual dog is present and,importantly, who is missing. Information like who is dominant, who is hanging out with who, who is scent marking and where, and who is doing most of the hunting, are all important to record and are part of what it takes to monitor the success (or failure) of a pack. All this requires us having the necessary tools, skills and equipment to keep up-to-date with the unusual work required of a wildlife researcher. These include a camera, GPS, tracking gear, note book,pen, android data logging device and a reasonably reliable 4×4 vehicle among other things.
