"As educators, not only must we refuse to settle for easy consensus, to simplify, to neutralize, or to translate; we must also accept and assume the responsibility to ‘think, speak, and act’ within aporetic situations…. Most of all, we must engage students in a quest for knowledge which should take them way beyond the boundaries of their immediate socio-politico-cultural contexts in space and in time. We must encourage them to take risks in learning and discovering the other, the unknown while building a greater sense of responsibility." Denise Egéa, NUGSE Professor

College of Education faculty among MSU’s 2024-25 Faculty Leadership Program cohort

Tuesday, august 27, 2024.

Headshots of three faculty members

Three faculty members of Mississippi State’s College of Education are part of a university cohort developed to enhance skills in preparation for future leadership roles. The Faculty Leadership Program’s Class of 2024 features 20 faculty from a variety of departments.

“While faculty members may be leaders in their specialty areas, many may not have had the opportunity to develop their skills and deepen their knowledge about managing institutions,” Vice President for Research and Economic Development Julie Jordan said.

Members of this fall’s cohort from the College of Education include Daniel Gadke , College of Education associate dean of research, professor and Department of Counseling, Higher Education Leadership, Educational Psychology, and Foundations head; Jeffrey Leffler , associate professor, Meridian Division of Education; and Stephanie Lemley , associate professor, Department of Teacher Education and Leadership.

The Faculty Leadership Program exposes faculty standouts to the skills, processes and mindset needed to lead the university forward in its learning, service and research mission, Jordan said. The Office of Research and Economic Development and the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President spearhead the program each year.

During the eight-month program which begins in September, participants attend various presentations and engage in roundtable discussions with top administrators. Session topics include leadership styles, organizational change, building winning research teams, organizational evaluation and assessment, and student access and success.

“I am proud of Drs. Daniel Gadke, Jeffrey Leffler and Stephanie Lemley for their commitment to growth and leadership,” said Teresa Jayroe, dean of the College of Education. “Their participation in the Faculty Leadership Program reflects their dedication to advancing our College’s mission.”

Eligible applicants include employees preparing for mid- to senior-level leadership roles; directing major tasks, projects and initiatives; and having at least one year of service in their current position and support of their dean, director or department head.

Feedback on the program from past participants includes an appreciation for university-level budgetary considerations, the opportunity to network with other faculty and university leadership, and the understanding of the pathways into administration.

Applications for the 2025-26 Faculty Leadership Program open in March. The deadline to apply is May 1. For more information about the Faculty Leadership Program, visit  https://www.research.msstate.edu/initiatives/faculty-leadership-development-program .

Osu completes ethiopian higher education program.

Tuesday, August 27, 2024

Media Contact: Hailey Williams | Communications Specialist | 405-744-5496 | [email protected]

Dr. Randy Kluver, associate provost and dean of Oklahoma State University Global , recently represented OSU at the closing workshop for the Ethiopian Higher Education Leadership, Management, and Governance program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The LMG program is funded by the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, the nation’s capital. It is a three-year project to strengthen higher education leadership in Ethiopia’s public universities by providing senior leaders with insight into global trends in higher education and to develop strategies to improve the quality of Ethiopian higher education.

Along with Texas Tech University and Ohio State University, Oklahoma State partnered with the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Ministry of Education and Ohio State Global One Health.

The program is the result of a U.S. Department of State grant .

Throughout the program, participants received training in Ethiopia. They participated in visits to the three partner universities to meet with leaders and learn how American institutions develop strategies to meet challenges in higher education leadership and administration.

The closing workshop brought representatives from these organizations together with the program participants to reflect on its lasting impact on Ethiopia’s higher education.

“With the university’s connections and history with Ethiopia, OSU Global was glad to play a part in this program,” Kluver said. “This workshop was a fantastic opportunity to connect with each other and review everything that has been learned over the course of the project.

“I look forward to seeing the effects the LMG program will have on the future of Ethiopian higher education.”

If I had to do it again, I would.”

  • “Prior to registering for the two day Academic Leadership, I was wondering if this would be a good use of my time.  It seemed like a very large time commitment and given other demands I must admit I was hesitant.  However, after attending, I can firmly state that this was in fact an excellent use of my time.  The training was extremely well thought out and employed a variety of learning experiences.  The course materials continue to serve as an excellent resource to me.  The small group size was also beneficial as we received a lot personalized attention.  I would highly recommend this training for new department chairs.”
