CPC for new professional lorry, bus and coach drivers

If you want to drive professionally you need an initial Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification. You’ll get a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) when you qualify. You must keep this with you when you’re driving professionally.

The Driver CPC initial qualification

The Driver CPC initial qualification has four parts:

  • part one - theory test (this includes two separate tests - multiple choice and hazard perception)
  • part two - case study test
  • part three - driving ability test
  • part four - practical demonstration test

You must pass all four parts to get your Driver CPC.

Book the theory test and case study test

You can book parts one and two online. When you book using this service, you only pay the cost of the test – there’s no extra booking fee.

  • Book, change, or cancel your theory test appointment

Book the driving ability test and practical demonstration test

You can also book parts three and four online. You can book online at the link below.

  • Book your practical driving test online

Order you take the tests in

You can take part one and part two in any order. You can also take part three and part four in any order. However, you must pass part one before you can take part three and pass part two before you can take part four.

Taking part one

Part one - you can take the multiple-choice and hazard perception tests in any order, on the same day or on two separate days. Remember, if you are taking both tests on the same day, make sure you leave some time between the two tests.

Receiving your DQC

A DQC will be issued automatically once you have passed the initial qualification. It will be sent to the address on your driving licence, so make sure that your details are up-to-date.

If the address is wrong and you are unable to get the DQC from the address on your licence, you will have to complete a DQC1 application form and apply for a duplicate licence at a cost of £25.

  • Keeping your driving licence up-to-date
  • Driver Qualification Card and Driver CPC

Driver CPC periodic training

You must do 35 hours of periodic training every five years to keep your Driver CPC.

You should not unnecessarily repeat the same periodic training module within a five-year rolling period. A range of different subjects should be covered over the driver’s 35 hours of periodic training. If unnecessary repetition of periodic training occurs, action may be taken against the driver and trainer.

When you don’t need Driver CPC

There are exceptions from the Driver CPC qualification if you drive certain vehicles. You can move in and out of an exemption, depending on the circumstances in which they are driving.

  • Exemptions and Driver CPC fees

John is the driver of a flatbed HGV and is nearing the end of a 9 hour driving day. He has taken appropriate breaks. As he negotiates a right hand bend he notices in his mirror that a roll of steel has fallen from his vehicle, resulting in a pedestrian being injured.

It has been noted that the fuel consumption of John’s vehicle is significantly higher than similar vehicles in the fleet.

What does CPC Module 2 assess?

Module 2 of the Driver CPC qualification consists of case studies based on real-life scenarios. These scenarios demonstrate situations you may face and need to be able to deal with in your working life. The case study test allows you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and assesses you on how to put your knowledge and skills into practice. Remember, this module requires you to use what you have learned to make your own judgements on each scenario. The CPC Module 2 assessment lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and tests you on 6 to 8 case studies. You will then be asked between 5 and 10 questions about the scenarios in each case study. Answers can be provided in 4 ways but will usually either be from a multiple-choice list or require you to click on certain areas of an image or photograph. As mentioned, you have to pass the Driver CPC Case Study Test before you are able to take Driver CPC Practical Demonstration Test ( CPC Module 4 ).

As a professional driver of large goods vehicles, you could encounter any of the circumstances in the case studies during your working life. The questions asked are designed to make you think about how you should behave in each scenario. The Driver CPC Module Case Studies also assess 3 key skills:

  • Your knowledge – You will be tested on your basic ability to recall factual information.
  • Comprehension – You will be tested on your basic ability to understand situations you may face in your working life.
  • Your application of knowledge – You will be tested on your ability to practically apply your knowledge and understanding to real-life situations.

What can you expect in the CPC Module 2 test?

As outlined above, the test will last 90 minutes and be made up of between 6 and 8 case study scenarios. Before the test starts, you have 15 minutes to get to grips with how the testing equipment works. This means you will have 75 minutes in which to answer the questions on the case studies. You will be using a Visual Display Unit (VDU) like the one used for the Theory Test.

Each case study has between 5 and 10 questions asked about each scenario. However, whether you have 6 or 8 scenarios in your test you will always be asked a total of 50 questions. To register your responses, you can either use the mouse or the touch screen functionality of the VDU.

If you have already sat the multiple-choice and hazard perception tests for Module 1, then you will be familiar with how to use the VDU.

CPC Module 2 Questions and Answers

There are four possible ways you will be asked to answer the questions appearing on the right of your screen. These four ways are detailed below:

1. Multiple Choice Questions

As in the Module 1 theory test, some questions will require you to choose just ONE correct answer from a list of possible options.

2. Multi-response Questions

You may also have been asked questions like these in the theory test. For multi-response questions, you are required to select more than one right answer from a list of options.

3. Audio Questions

Some questions about the case studies require you to listen to an additional audio clip. You will need to listen to an audio clip to be able to answer these questions. Audio questions require you to choose just ONE correct answer from a list of options.

4. Hot Spot

Hot spot questions require the use of the mouse or a touch screen to click on appropriate areas of photographs or illustrations.

During the 15 minutes before the test starts, you will have the chance to practice answering questions asked in each of these ways. However, the practice questions will not be scored.

Once you have answered all of the questions relating to a case study you can click on the ‘next’ button located on the bottom left of the screen. This will take you to the next case study until you have completed 50 questions. You are able to double-check or change answers in previous case studies at any time if you realise you answered something wrong.

The CPC Module 2 pass mark

As of 21 st March 2011, the pass mark for the Driver CPC has gone up to 40. You will be asked a total of 50 questions, so need a pass mark of 80% to pass your Driver CPC. Once you have passed Module 2 you will have 2 years to pass the Driver CPC 4 practical demonstration test.

How to prepare for the Driver CPC

In order to prepare for the Driver CPC module 2, there are a number of simple steps you can undertake. The key is to revise using example questions. However, note that the questions you will be asked during the test will not be exactly the same as the questions you revise. Nevertheless, they will be a variation of the questions and revising gives you the chance to be prepared with the knowledge required to answer the questions however they may have been asked. You should also:

1. Understand the Driver CPC

It will be useful to understand each of the different modules involved in the Driver CPC before taking this test. Make sure you understand the differences between Modules 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the Driver CPC.

2. Practice with our online resources

It is vital to practice with example questions. Our CPC module 2 practice material covers everything you need to pass the test. This includes:

  • Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving (SAFED)
  • Load safety
  • Securing loads
  • Regulations governing carrying certain load types
  • Regulations that govern the prevention of trafficking
  • Regulations that govern driver hours and tachographs
  • Health & Safety at Work
  • Keeping yourself fit for the job
  • Dealing with emergencies
  • The role of a driver in a company or organisations
  • Organisation of freight transport
  • Other techniques for safe driving

3. Make sure to read example questions

You will need to read example questions on each of these areas. Make sure to read a variety of questions for each topic area to ensure you richly understand the subject.

4. Practice

It is a good idea to randomly practice answering questions from each of these sections. You may find you are more comfortable in some areas than others. Once you feel you are ready, it is advisable to take a practice test.

5. Practice tests

Once you have practised answering questions for each of the sections, it is a good idea to practice under exam conditions. This will help you feel more comfortable on the day of the test.

You will receive the results on the day of the test as they are available within 10 minutes of completing the test. The pass letter is dated and you have two years to complete Part 4 of the Driver CPC from this date.

If you fail Module 2 of the Driver CPC, your results letter will explain why you have failed and provide feedback. You can book a re-test on the same day but this will take a minimum of three working days to be cleared and approved.

How2Become-Guideance-Since 2005-Icon

Why do I need to take a Case Study Assessment? The Case Study Assessment Test is a crucial component of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification for several reasons. Firstly, it assesses drivers’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, ensuring they can make informed decisions on the road. Secondly, it promotes ongoing learning and adaptation to changes within the transportation industry, enhancing drivers’ competency and professionalism. Lastly, the test standardises evaluation criteria, ensuring all CPC holders meet consistent standards of excellence, thereby enhancing public trust and safety. In essence, the Case Study Assessment Test plays a pivotal role in upholding the integrity of the profession and safeguarding road users by ensuring drivers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to operate safely and responsibly.

ABOUT THE DRIVER CPC  CASE STUDY ASSESSMENT

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Case Study Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to test drivers’ ability to apply their knowledge and expertise in real-world scenarios. Through a series of carefully crafted case studies, drivers are presented with challenging situations that they may encounter during their professional driving careers. These case studies cover a wide range of topics, including road safety, vehicle maintenance, driver health and well-being, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. By assessing how drivers analyse, prioritise, and respond to these scenarios, the Case Study Assessment provides valuable insights into their practical skills, decision-making abilities, and overall readiness to operate safely and effectively on the road.

Moreover, the Case Study Assessment serves as a dynamic learning experience for drivers, offering opportunities to deepen their understanding of industry standards, best practices, and emerging issues. By engaging with realistic case studies, drivers are encouraged to reflect on their own practices, identify areas for improvement, and stay abreast of developments within the transportation sector. The test itself is made up of 50 questions presented in groups of 6-8 questions per scenario. The test will contain six different scenarios.

Driver CPC Initial Qualification Parts 1 and 2

Driver cpc part 1 test: theory.

You can book the Part 1 Theory Test of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) as soon as you have received your provisional licence.

The test is made up of 2 parts; multiple choice and hazard perception. You have to book both parts separately, but you can take them on the same day. It does not matter which one you take first but you need to pass both within 2 years of each other to obtain your theory test certificate.

What to take to your test

You must take one of the following:

  • A Great Britain photocard driving licence.
  • A Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart.
  • An EU photocard driving licence and paper counterpart, if you have one.

If you do not have a photocard driving licence, take your paper licence and a valid passport.

Your test will be cancelled and you will lose your fee if you do not take the right documents.

Driver CPC tests and coronavirus (COVID-19)

You can choose whether to wear a face-covering for your test. If you are self-isolating because of COVID-19, you should not go to your test.

You can change your theory test appointment for free if you need to self-isolate on the day of your test.

  • Revision and practice

You can use books and software to revise for the theory test and take practice tests.

Multiple-choice questions

The multiple-choice questions in the theory test are based on 3 books:

  • The Highway Code
  • Know your traffic signs
  • The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles or The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Buses and Coaches

Study these to learn the rules and skills you will be tested on. You can buy them from most high street and online bookshops.

Take a practice test

Take a practice theory test  to check how much you have learnt. The questions are not used in the real test, but they are based on the same topics as the test.

Hazard perception test

To prepare for this test you can use the official guide to hazard perception. You can buy the guide in these formats:

CPC Case Studies: A Guide

Mon, July 22, 2024

The Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) case study test is a crucial part of the CPC certification process for professional drivers. It assesses the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world scenarios, ensuring that drivers are well-prepared to handle various situations on the road.

Understanding the CPC Case Study Test

What is the cpc case study test.

The CPC Case Study Test is an exam designed to evaluate the practical application of knowledge acquired during CPC training. It typically includes scenarios that a professional driver might encounter, requiring them to make informed decisions based on the given information.

What is the Pass Rate for CPC Case Studies?

The pass rate for CPC case studies varies, but it generally ranges between 45-50%. This reflects the challenging nature of the test and the importance of thorough preparation.

What is the Pass Mark for the CPC Case Study?

To pass the CPC case study test, candidates need to achieve a mark of at least 50%. This usually translates to 30 out of 60 marks.

Preparing for the CPC Case Study Test

How to prepare for cpc case study.

Preparing for the CPC case study test involves a combination of study methods and practical experience. Recommended study methods include:

  • Using official CPC study guides and materials.
  • Participating in CPC training courses offered by accredited providers.
  • Engaging in group study sessions to discuss and analyze case studies.

Understanding real-world scenarios is crucial, as the test often involves practical situations that drivers face.

CPC Case Study Practice Free

Numerous online resources offer free practice tests for CPC case studies. These practice tests can be invaluable for preparation, allowing candidates to familiarize themselves with the test format and types of questions they will encounter.

Practical Tips and Techniques

Is cpc case study hard.

The difficulty of the CPC case study test can vary depending on a candidate’s background and preparation. Common challenges include understanding complex scenarios and applying theoretical knowledge in practical contexts.

Effective Study Strategies

Effective study strategies include:

  • Creating a structured study schedule.
  • Breaking down study materials into manageable sections.
  • Practicing with past case study papers.
  • Seeking feedback from instructors or peers on practice tests.

Time management and careful reading of case scenarios are essential for success.

CPC Case Study Questions and Practice

Cpc case study questions.

The CPC case study test evaluates a candidate’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world driving scenarios. For example, in one case study, aspiring bus drivers must understand the requirements for obtaining a full PCV Driver CPC qualification, using course materials and practice case studies to prepare for the PCV (bus) module 2 test. Another scenario involves Trevor and John, drivers for TSD Haulage, who must navigate the logistics of multi-manning a lorry from the UK to France, including vehicle preparation, completing consignment notes, and managing driving schedules. These case studies test the candidates' understanding of regulations, procedures, and effective time management in professional driving contexts.

CPC Module 2 Case Studies Free

Many websites offer free access to CPC Module 2 case studies, providing valuable practice opportunities.

CPC Case Study Revision

Regular revision of study materials and practice tests is crucial to reinforce knowledge and improve test-taking skills.

Costs and Logistics

Cpc case study test cost.

The cost for taking the CPC case study test is £23. It is essential to budget for this and any additional study materials or courses.

How to Schedule and Take the Test

Scheduling the CPC case study test can be done through the official DVSA website or through approved test providers. On the test day, candidates should arrive prepared with necessary identification and study materials if allowed.

The CPC case study test is a vital component of the CPC certification, ensuring that professional drivers can effectively apply their knowledge in real-world situations. With proper preparation, practice, and effective study strategies, candidates can successfully navigate the challenges of the test and achieve their CPC certification.

Once you have a provisional licence you can book the CPC part 2 case studies test. It does not matter if you have yet to pass the Driver CPC part 1 theory test.

Licence for Driver CPC Case Study Test

After you book CPC module 2 (case studies test) you will need to take one of these driver licences with you:

  • Great Britain photocard driving licence.
  • Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart.
  • EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart if you have it).

Note : You may not have a photocard driving licence. In this case, take your paper driver’s licence and a valid passport. Failing to have the right documents means they will cancel your test and you will lose the fee.

How CPC Part 2 Test Works

Seven different short story case studies make up part two of the test. They are based on real situations that you may come across while driving Lorries or buses for a living . But, you will work through each of the scenarios on a computer.

Note : You need to answer between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions for each case CPC case study test. The CPC part 2 test will last for 1 hour and 15 minutes. The CPC module 2 pass mark is 40 out of 50 (at least 80%).

Driver CPC Part 2 Case Studies Test Result

You will receive a letter at the test centre with the results. It will show the grade for the particular part of the case studies test that you took.

There will be a test pass reference number written on the letter. You need the number to book the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test. The pass letter and reference number is valid for two (2) years.

Note : It is important to pass the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test within the two year period. Failing to do so means you would need to pass the part 2 case studies test again.

What happens if You Fail the CPC Case Studies Tests?

Several things will happen if you fail the CPC case study test. A result letter provides feedback informing why you failed. You can go ahead and book another case studies test straight away. But, you must wait at least three (3) clear working days before you can resit the tests.

DVSA Cancelled Tests

It is uncommon but the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency may cancel the test at short notice. In this case, you can apply for a refund to cover your out-of-pocket expenses.

CPC Module 2 is known as the “Case Study” and is a computer based test which you take at a Pearson Vue  test centre.

CPC Module 4 is also known as the “Show & Tell Demonstration”. Lloyds School of Motoring conducts training for this and will book your test at the DVA test centre in Belfast.

This half day course can either be delivered outdoors or indoors in our purpose built covered training facility.

Show & Tell Demonstration includes:

  • loading the vehicle and proper vehicle use
  • security of the vehicle and contents
  • prevention of criminality and trafficking
  • how to assess emergency situations
  • how to prevent physical risk

Module-4-Check-List-Bus

We will book the test and accompany you with the training vehicle on test day.

Extra training time is allowed on test day with our instructor to go through key points again to prepare you for a successful pass result.

The 40-minute test will be conducted by an DVA examiner at Balmoral test centre.

Acquired rights

If you’re already a professional driver, you may have ‘acquired rights’ to Driver CPC if you got your vocational licence (D, D1, D+E and D1+E) before 10 September 2009.

Having acquired rights does not exempt you from periodic training .

Renewing your Driver CPC for bus and coach

All professional bus and coach drivers must complete at least 35 hours of Driver CPC training every 5 years .

The training covers various aspects of professional driving and is delivered by independent training bodies.

What’s covered in your training is up to you and your employer, but it might include:

  • fuel-efficient driving
  • defensive driving techniques
  • health and safety
  • drivers’ hours regulations
  • using tachographs.

One day’s training every year is ideal. It allows you to respond to each year’s priorities for your own continuing professional development and your employer’s changing business needs.

It can severely impact business planning and keep you off the road if too much of your training is left to the end of your card’s validity period. You also might not be able to find a trainer if demand is high.

It is illegal to drive professionally if you fail to complete your 35 hours periodic training by the deadline .

Professional training courses for lorry, coach, and bus drivers

What is CPC Training?

Driver CPC is a certificate of professional competence designed to improve road safety and maintain high driving standards across Europe.

By law, drivers of lorries, buses, coaches and taxi’s must complete 35 hours of training every five years to keep their CPC valid.

  • CPC stands for Certificate of Professional Competence
  • 35 hours of periodic training required every 5 years
  • Professional lorry, bus or coach drivers need a CPC

Our LGV & Bus CPC Courses

Initial cpc qualification.

New drivers must complete an ‘Initial Driver CPC Qualification’ driving professionally.

Fail to complete the initial training course means you are driving illegally. If caught you could have your licence revoked, be fined or even face imprisonment.

The initial qualification is split into four parts: Theory test – split into multiple choice and hazard perception. Case studies – a series of seven studies based on real-life situations. Practical test – testing your driving ability. Vehicle safety demonstration – learning how to keep vehicles safe and secure

Periodic CPC Training

Periodic CPC Training must be undertaken after the Initial Qualification is completed. It is the individual drivers’ responsibility to ensure their training is up to date and they are legally compliant.

All drivers must complete at least 35 hours of Driver CPC training every five years on a continuous basis. This is what’s known as periodic training. Most drivers choose to complete seven hours of training each year, helping to spread the time effort and cost.

Each following five-year period begins from the expiry date of a driver’s current DCPC qualification, and not from the date on which they reached the 35-hour minimum training requirement.

In order to drive professionally you must also pass the driver CPC case study test (also known as the Driver CPC case study theory test - Step 2). Both the truck and the bus case study tests ask you to look at three real-life situations a professional driver might face.

Each case study test is computer-based and user-friendly, and works as follows:

  • you will be asked 15 questions on each of three real-life driver situations
  • to pass you must score at least 5 out of 15 in each situation and have an overall score of at least 28 out of 45.

You can prepare for the case study test by reading and learning the Rules of the Road. There are a wide range of official printed, digital and online learning materials available.

Case study test learning resources

To prepare for your case study test you should study the following:

  • The Official driver theory test truck and bus book , available online or in most book shops
  • The Rules of the Road

The RSA also has  approved Driver CPC Trainers  who can help you pass the CPC case study test.

How to book your case study test

If you want to become a category C (CPC truck) or category D (CPC bus) driver you must pass a case study test.

You must have passed the Driver CPC theory test (Step 1) in the relevant category before you can sit your case study test.

You have the option to sit it at any of the  40+ theory test centre locations nationwide.

If you're ready, you can go ahead and book your case study test online now.

Your case study test result

When you complete your case study test you will be given a score report. This will tell you whether you have passed or failed your test.

If you've passed

When you pass the case study test you are issued with a driver CPC case study test certificate. This is valid for up to two years. You should apply for a learner permit within that time. After two years the certificate will no longer be valid and you will have to pay for and sit the case study test again.

If you're unsuccessful

If you're unsuccessful at your case study test, you'll get a score report with feedback telling you where you went wrong. Pay attention to these areas as they will help with your revision and give you a better chance of passing next time.

You can  book another case study  test straight away, but you can't take it for another three clear working days.
