Do I really need to write a cover letter? In my role as a pharmacy recruiter and career coach, I am often asked whether a cover letter is a necessary accompaniment to a CV as part of a job application. Some people believe that cover letters just repeat information from their CVs — others are concerned that recruiters never even read them. However, if you can write a cover letter that explains why you are the right candidate for the job you want, you can ensure that your application stands out for the right reasons.

Cover letters — what’s the point?

Traditionally, you would send a CV and cover letter by post in response to a job application or as a speculative approach. Your cover letter would introduce you in a professional sense, explain why you were applying for the position and provide some evidence of your competency for the role.

Nowadays, applications are less frequently sent by post — they are usually emailed or completed online. Despite this, presenting a professional cover letter is still part of the established protocol. If you are responding to a job advertisement in today’s competitive pharmacy jobs market, it is likely you will be one of many applicants (sometimes one of hundreds). Therefore, you need to do everything you can to ensure your application stands out, which includes an excellent cover letter.

Consider the hiring manager’s point of view

Before you start writing your CV and cover letter, you need to ask yourself: “What would the hiring manager want to see in the application?”

One way to find out is to simply call and ask the hiring manager or recruiter exactly what they would like to see. A recent survey of US employers by Saddleback College in America has shown that they can have differing views on whether a cover letter is important, how long it should be and what information it should contain. By asking the employer directly, you can find out their specific views and tailor your cover letter accordingly.

Laying out your letter

There are no set rules for your cover letter, but a good structure is important. The cover letter is telling a story about you and, like all good stories, it should have a beginning, middle and end.

The beginning

If the application is being posted then use a standard letter format, with your own address and date on the right and the organisation’s contact name and address on the left. For email applications, put your cover letter in the main body of the email and add your CV as an attachment. Your cover letter can be ignored more easily if you attach it as a separate document.

You should always try to address your cover letter to a specific person when possible. This will be easier if you have already called the hiring manager. Research by Forum3 (now called Charity People), a not-for-profit recruitment company for the third sector, suggests you are 10–15% more likely to receive a reply if you address your application to a person and 5% more likely to get an interview [1] . If you do not know the name of the person, then use a professional address such as “Dear Sir or Madam”.

Immediately after addressing the reader, you should state the purpose of the application, so that the reader can quickly understand the reason for the email. For example, “Reference: Application for Band 6 hospital pharmacist role”. This could also be included as the subject line of the email.

The first paragraph should describe what your current professional situation is and why you are applying for the position. This paragraph should also include any research you have done into the role or organisation, including anyone you have spoken to, any site visits you have undertaken and the name of anyone who may have referred you. If you have taken the time to research the organisation and the role, this could be a key differentiator for your application. However, you should avoid making generic statements, such as “I want to join your esteemed company”. Make sure anything you say about an organisation is relevant to them and based on the research you have undertaken.

Your cover letter should demonstrate to the reader that you have the key skills and experience relevant to the particular role. You can do this by providing specific examples, tailored to the requirements listed in the job description, of when you have demonstrated these from your own experience to date. Choose three or four of these relevant examples that each tell a story about your skills, experience or traits and provided a positive outcome for the stakeholders involved in the situation.

These examples could come from any part of your life, as long as they are relevant. Newly qualified pharmacists will likely use examples from their pharmacy placements, academia, part-time work and also extra-curricular activities, in order to demonstrate a range of skills. A more experienced pharmacist candidate would generally choose examples from their work history because it is the most relevant. However, sometimes it is appropriate to bring in other examples, such as voluntary work.

Always try to use an active voice when explaining your achievements, because this serves to make the reader feel that you were in control in these situations. Additionally, try to avoid making vague or generic statements that could apply to any applicant.

If an achievement is strong enough to be included in your cover letter, it should be repeated on your CV. Try not to repeat examples word-for-word on both documents — instead, try to interpret them differently. Sometimes, due to time constraints, the hiring manager may bypass your cover letter and go straight to your CV, which could mean they miss your best examples. In addition, repetition will serve to reinforce these key messages like a sales brochure would, which is, in essence, what your CV and cover letter are.

In your final paragraph, thank the reader for taking the time to read your application and summarise why you feel you are a good fit for the role, based on your skills and experience. State how and when you can be contacted with regards to arranging an interview and then make sure you are available when you say you will be.

Sign off the letter professionally with “Yours sincerely” (to a specific person) or “Yours faithfully” (to an unnamed person), followed by your name.

Formatting your letter

In terms of format, a cover letter is usually written as a traditional letter, laid out in paragraphs. It is different to your CV, which is an abbreviated document that uses various techniques to draw the eye to the most important parts quickly and make the document as succinct as possible. In your cover letter, keep your language concise and purposeful. To achieve this, you may need to redraft your letter several times.

The grammar, spelling and formatting of your cover letter is just as important as the content of the document, so make sure it is perfect. Particularly, ensure you have spelt names and company names correctly and there are no typing errors. Research from student recruitment website StudentGems.com suggests half of employers discard job applications that contain spelling or formatting errors.

Choose a standard, well known and professional font, such as Arial, Verdana, Calibri, Times New Roman or Trebuchet. This will make the letter easier to read and will also support applicant tracking systems that may not be able to pick up lesser-known fonts. Keep your font size between 10 and 12 for ease of reading.

Through my own experience of recruiting pharmacists, I have observed that the standard of today’s pharmacy job applications is generally quite poor. If you spend time putting together a strong application, which includes an excellent cover letter, then it will stand out to an employer and increase your chances of securing the role.

US biopharmaceutical companies have been running drug trials with the Chinese military for more than a decade, a House committee shockingly revealed in a Monday letter to the Food and Drug Administration.

Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party wrote to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf, demanding information about the clinical trials for new drugs.

“These collaborative research activities raise serious concerns that critical Intellectual Property is at risk of being transferred to the [Chinese military] or being co-opted under the People’s Republic of China’s National Security Law,” said Chairman John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), Rep. Neal Dunn (R-Fla.) and Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.).

“Conversely, there are also concerns with the trustworthiness of clinical trial data produced overseas from [People’s Liberation Army] institutions,” the lawmakers added.

Hundreds of the clinical trials have taken place in China at Chinese military-affiliated medical centers and hospitals, the letter notes, including one ongoing test for an advanced Alzheimer’s treatment.

Those include the PLA’s General Hospital and Medical School, the PLA’s Air Force Medical University and the Hospital of the PLA, which is operated by the PLA’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS).

The US Commerce Department has already banned companies from swapping tech with AMMS over concerns that it could threaten national security.

Other trials have been conducted in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where China has been carrying out a genocide against the Muslim Uyghur population.

Some female victims have been raped or sterilized in the abominable “re-education camps” while others have reportedly even had their organs harvested .

“​​As we know, there is simply no ability for firms to conduct due diligence to ensure that clinical trials done in XUAR are voluntary,” the House select committee members point out in their letter.

“Given this, we believe that U.S. biopharmaceutical entities could be unintentionally profiting from the data derived from clinical trials during which the CCP forced victim patients to participate,” they said.

The lawmakers have asked the FDA commissioner to answer by Oct. 1 whether the agency has formally reviewed any of the clinical drug trials or uncovered the extent of the collaboration with the Chinese military.

“The FDA has received the letter and will respond directly to the members of Congress,” a spokesperson for the agency told The Post.

Older Americans on Medicare who take 10 widely prescribed drugs such as Xarelto or Eliquis will get a break on the medications' list prices beginning in 2026.

The Biden administration announced Thursday that Medicare had negotiated discounts with pharmaceutical companies on 10 drugs prescribed to treat blood clots, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. The  drugs  are Eliquis, Jardiance, Xarelto, Januvia, Farxiga, Entresto, Enbrel, Imbruvica, Stelara, and the insulins Fiasp and NovoLog.

The discounts will range from 38% to 79% when the negotiated prices take effect in 2026. The bargaining will save Medicare $6 billion when the price cuts are implemented in two years, according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates.

Medicare enrollees can expect to save $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket costs, HHS said.

The list price of Merck's diabetes drug Januvia will be slashed to $113 for a 30-day supply from $527 as of 2023. Eliquis, a blood thinner from Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer, will cost $231 for a 30-day supply, down from $521. Consumers can see a list of the 10 discounted drugs here .

Under President Joe Biden's 2022 climate and health legislation called the  Inflation Reduction Act , Medicare was empowered to negotiate prices with pharmaceutical companies on a limited number of medications. Another 30 drugs will be selected over the next two years for negotiated prices that will be rolled out in 2027 and 2028.

"For the first time ever, Medicare negotiated directly with drug companies, and the American people are better off for it," HUD Secretary Xavier Becerra said.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who delivered the tiebreaking vote in the Senate to pass the legislation in 2022, was expected to tout the cost savings for seniors in a campaign stop Thursday.

The discounts won't apply to most working-age Americans insured through the workplace. An analysis by KFF, a private nonprofit health policy organization, found that of the 167 million people with employer health insurance, 3.4 million took one of 10 drugs negotiated by Medicare. Employers typically bargain for lower-cost prescription drugs through insurance companies and pharmacy managers.

Other provisions of the federal law allow Medicare enrollees to get recommended vaccines with no cost-sharing and limit out-of-pocket costs at $35 for covered insulin products. In 2025, enrollees in Medicare's Part D drug plans will have their out-of-pocket expenses for prescriptions capped at $2,000 a year.

Drug companies warn legislation could delay lifesaving cures

Drug companies and their industry allies have filed several lawsuits  challenging different aspects  of the federal law. But so far, the drug companies have not halted negotiations.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a trade group representing drug manufacturers,  has argued  the federal efforts to negotiate prices have lacked transparency, discounted patients' input, and could reduce drug industry investments to research lifesaving cures. According to one survey of PhRMA members , 78% of drug companies said they expected to cancel early-stage drug research projects because of federal legislation.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said the 2022 federal law will bring financial relief to millions of older Americans who struggle to pay for prescription drugs. In a media call Wednesday, Klobuchar said more than 70% of Americans favor Medicare drug price negotiations.

"They've been trying to stop us in court," Klobuchar said Wednesday. "We've got the law on our side, we've got the facts on our side, and we have the people on our side. We're going to get this done."

A House committee is investigating whether brand drug companies are collaborating with the Chinese military when they run clinical trials in that country. 

“For over a decade, it appears that U.S. biopharmaceutical companies conducted clinical trials with China’s military organizations, and specifically with medical centers and hospitals affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army’s,” according to an Aug. 19 letter that the House China committee sent to the Food and Drug Administration.

The bipartisan inquiry jeopardizes yet another aspect of drug development for which drugmakers increasingly rely on China, where it’s cheaper. However, the letter is focused on trials involving hospitals affiliated with the Chinese military and trials run in the Xinjiang region, where the Chinese Communist Party has been accused of human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities.

Medicare announces lower prices on 10 common, high-cost drugs

The Biden administration said Thursday that it had reached an agreement with drugmakers to lower prices on the 10 costliest prescription drugs under Medicare.

It's part of the federal government's first-ever drug pricing negotiations, a cost reduction it claims could help ease the financial burden on the estimated 1 in 7 older adults in the U.S. struggling to pay for their medications.

Here are the negotiated prices for the drugs, based on a 30-day supply:

• Eliquis, a blood thinner from Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer: $231 negotiated price, down from $521 list price.
• Xarelto, a blood thinner from Johnson & Johnson: $197 negotiated price, down from $517 list price.
• Januvia, a diabetes drug from Merck: $113 negotiated price, down from $527 list price.
• Jardiance, a diabetes drug from Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly: $197 negotiated price, down from $573 list price.
• Enbrel, a rheumatoid arthritis drug from Amgen: $2,355 negotiated price, down from $7,106 list price.
• Imbruvica, a drug for blood cancers from AbbVie and Johnson & Johnson: $9,319 negotiated price, down from $14,934 list price.
• Farxiga, a drug for diabetes, heart failure and chronic kidney disease from AstraZeneca: $178 negotiated price, down from $556 list price.
• Entresto, a heart failure drug from Novartis: $295 negotiated price, down from $628 list price.
• Stelara, a drug for psoriasis and Crohn’s disease from J&J: $4,695 negotiated price, down from $13,836 list price.
• Fiasp and NovoLog, diabetes drugs from Novo Nordisk: $119 negotiated price, down from $495 list price.

The new negotiated prices were compared to the 2023 list prices of the drugs.

It's important to note that these numbers do not represent a direct comparison between the new negotiated prices and what Medicare and enrollees would have originally paid, said Stacie Dusetzina, a health policy professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. The list price is the full retail price of a medication and doesn't include any discounts or rebates a drug company may have offered.

Still, Dusetzina said, these are "pretty big discounts."

"I think that it shows that they're taking these negotiations very seriously and they're trying to get much lower prices," she said.

The lower prices are the result of months of heated negotiations between the federal government and drugmakers over the pricey medications.

The prices won't take effect until 2026, but the measure is a landmark for Medicare. The federal government has never been able to directly haggle with drugmakers over the prices of their prescription drugs.

“It is a historic moment,” White House domestic policy adviser Neera Tanden said on a call with reporters Wednesday night. “Millions of seniors and others on Medicare will soon see their drug costs go down on some of the most common and expensive drugs that treat heart disease, cancer, diabetes, blood costs and more.”

Medicare provides health insurance coverage to more than 65 million people in the U.S.

On Wednesday's call, administration officials said the new negotiated prices are projected to save Medicare enrollees $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket costs in the first year.

The negotiations — as mandated under the Inflation Reduction Act — began in earnest in January, when Medicare presented its opening prices to drugmakers.

The $1.5 billion is in addition to the savings from other provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, which include a $35 monthly cap on the out-of-pocket cost of insulin and an annual cap on out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, officials said.

Officials said the negotiations are also expected to save Medicare $6 billion in the first year.

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra described the negotiations as "intense" Wednesday.

"I had the privilege to work closely with our HHS team to oversee the negotiations," Becerra said. "It took both sides to reach a good deal."

Drugmakers fight lowered prices

The federal government will have until March 2025 to publish an explanation of how it reached the negotiated prices. If a drugmaker refused to negotiate, they faced a tax penalty, which could be lifted if the drugmaker chose to withdraw their drug from the Medicare program.

All of the drugmakers subject to negotiations have been asked for comment.

A spokesperson for Novartis called the negotiations "unconstitutional."

It "will have long-lasting and devastating consequences for patients by limiting access to medicines now and in the future," the spokespersons said in a statement.

In a statement, Steve Ubl, the president and CEO of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the drug industry's trade group, said the Biden administration is using the negotiations to "drive political headlines."

"There are no assurances patients will see lower out-of-pocket costs," he said.

The administration plans to leverage the negotiations to bolster Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign ahead of the presidential election against former President Donald Trump. Harris and President Joe Biden are scheduled to appear together Thursday to tout the savings from the program.

Wednesday’s call included Becerra, Tanden and Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Worried about unaffordable medications

A study published Wednesday in JAMA found that more than half of older adults reported being very concerned about the costs of medical care and prescription drugs ahead of the election.

Nearly 9 in 10 adults ages 65 and older say they take at least one prescription drug, according to KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues.

An analysis from the Commonwealth Fund , a nonprofit health care research institute, found that U.S. retail prices — prices pharmacists charge to patients or insurers before discounts or rebates — for the 10 selected drugs were three to eight times higher compared with prices in other countries of similar size and wealth.

Together, the 10 selected drugs accounted for more than $50 billion of Medicare Part D spending from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, or 20%, according to the CMS.

Medicare recipients spent $3.4 billion out of pocket for those drugs in 2022, with average out-of-pocket spending for the most expensive drugs as high as $6,497 per enrollee, according to the agency.

The 10 negotiated drugs are just the start: In 2027, negotiated prices will go into effect for 15 more drugs, followed by another 15 drugs in 2028 and 20 more in each subsequent year. It's possible that seniors could save even more in the next few years.

The outcome could be jeopardized if the drugmakers succeed in their lawsuits to block the law, which have so far been unsuccessful.

"It's a big deal that they reached an agreement with all 10 drugmakers," Dusetzina wrote in an email. "No one opted to leave Medicare and Medicaid in protest over their negotiated prices. That’s a success!"

The negotiations are limited to drugs under Medicare Part D, which covers medications used at home.

In the coming years, however, drugs under Medicare Part B, which are administered in medical facilities — such as chemotherapy drugs — will also be subject to negotiation.
