'Bro' movie review: A fantasy drama on time that makes two hours feel like forever

A still from the movie Bro.

Ten minutes into the film, Markandeya alias Mark (Sai Dharam Tej) dies in a car accident that he is seemingly responsible for. A shot of a white car tumbling across a highway cuts to darkness. We slowly see Mark emerge, unharmed, crying out for help. We then see the silhouette of a man, the superstar himself. Mark yells, “Who are you? Where am I? Show me your face.” No response. Then we get the cue. “Power ledha.” The lights shine on, revealing the power star himself, dressed in his famous Vayyari Bhama garb, dancing to the song. Then we see something downright farcical. The man is dancing, well, swaying lightly, as we see him morph into double, triple and multiple identical translucent figures, moving along to the acoustic hook from Vayyari… All the build-up and tease, followed by that one meta line acting as an OTP for the hero to emerge. Phata poster, nikla hero. Phir kya? It is all downhill from here, my friends, as the rest of the film goes on to replicate the heartbreaking mediocrity the Ameerpet edit of VFX Pawan Kalyans displayed.

For the most part, Bro is Mark’s story. He gets the Arjun Reddy style unlikeable-but-successful character arc. He finishes an entire workout but leaves his breakfast halfway. He will pay for his sisters’ education but never pays attention to them. He is also extremely fastidious with his time. He fires people on a whim because they have dared to waste his time. He sees his girlfriend Ramya (Ketika Sharma) as an appointment to be squeezed in between work and more work. Mark’s loved ones are the opportunity cost he voluntarily incurs for a coveted promotion in his company. Bro, in that way, is quite the apt title here, considering the whole ‘time is money, money is success’ mantra that drives Mark is also the beloved gospel of our podcast ‘bros’.

Samuthirakani and his writer-collaborator Trivikram are more inclined to present Mark in a grudgingly positive light, but more on that later. Pawan Kalyan is time, here. If Anne Hathaway suggested that time can be a physical dimension people can climb up and down like a hill in Interstellar — Samuthirakani wants us to know that time can also be reimagined as this demigod superstar we have all grown up loving.

But who really is this personification of time? This is where the movie entropies rapidly. Trivikram steps in to deliver some philosophical one-liners, which quickly turn into unsubtle digs against a certain Chief Minister. We also have Thaman’s rousing Sanskritised background score trying its best to defibrillate this otherwise comatose film. When we combine Thaman’s contributions with the fact that Bro is alternatively titled Bro The Avatar — we might just be talking about Kaala Bhairava, the Shaivite manifestation of time, reality and retribution. But this is a wasted conclusion since we see Pawan Kalyan’s character borrow his character traits from his own film-mythos-graph. In OMG (Pawan Kalyan features in this film’s Telugu remake), Akshay Kumar’s Sri Krishna apes the character traits of the latter. So we see this actor play the flute, carry a peacock feather keychain and inhale blocks of butter from Paresh Rawal’s fridge. But here, Pawan Kalyan’s Time mowa bro is a highlights reel of the actor in his prime. He prefers chai from a cutting glass (like his character from Thammudu), sings Aadavari Matalaku Ardhale Verule in a car and dances to Jalsa Jalsa in a pub. Costume designer Neeta Lulla chimes into the film’s overall meta-ness, her costumes are an ode to the actor’s clutter-breaking, forever cool fits from the 2000s.

At this point, a senior star paying meta lip service to his older, more iconic roles is not new. Lokesh Kanagaraj did it with Kamal Haasan in Vikram. Closer home, Bobby Kolli pulled it off with clap backs to vintage Chiranjeevi in Waltair Veerayya. But the trick misfires with Bro, especially considering Kushi, Jalsa and Tholi Prema had some wide and successful re-releases at a time as recent as last year. Speaking of which, how did a song from  Bheemla Nayak feature in this vintage mix? I get that time is relative and stories are subjective, but the only way ‘one year back’ would count as vintage is if human beings had a lifespan of three years. The shtick feels a lot more tired when you realise that Pawan Kalyan is running his own experiments with time, using his past career to propel his future one — cinema be damned.

The rest of the film does little to help its own case. Bro is a remake of a Tamil feature that was once originally a play, but that never meant actors should continue to stay in a single place, swapping the stage for endless green screenshots. Sai Dharam Tej is equally immobile in his acting, as he pantomimes in tandem with Pawan Kalyan’s sluggish and disinterested demeanour.

Surprisingly, Mark’s family left a greater impression on me than Tej and Pawan Kalyan. There is a sister who knows she is unfairly resented, but still respects her brother. The other sister and brother hide their own relationships, despite Mark being open with his. The film’s only redeeming grace is the way it treats patriarchy. Now when I say patriarchy, I don’t mean it in the way that word has earned its demonic status today. I mean it quite literally. Mark is the oldest child of his family, its sole breadwinner and patriarch after their father’s demise. When he rises to lecture the women in his household, the girls see their father. The mother sees her own father. Mark is riddled with anxiety, about getting his siblings ‘settled’. Turns out, his family needs no help from him. In one of the film’s only aha! moments, we see the ‘nobody needing Mark’ angle take a deterministic turn.

And when Mark realises that it is he who needs his family more than the other way round, he begins to redeem himself. The film though, not so much. This is an interesting time for Pawan Kalyan fans, to watch him transition from a place that made him the power star to a place that could give him actual power. We have seen him build a meta-narrative beneficial for politics in both Vakeel Saab and Bheemla Nayak. But Bro is a slippery beast. Star power means showing greatness, something mortals cannot achieve. But we have Pawan Kalyan in a film that has come down to our level, instead of us wishing to reach theirs, with all the Jaya Surya and Mavayya meme clapbacks.

It is not easy at all to watch this ‘torchbearer’ feature in a rather torturous film. It feels much more insulting when the star is content with scheduling this piecemeal effort film between politics the way Mark scheduled his time between work for Ramya. We have had 25 glorious years with Pawan Kalyan. Maybe, our time is over.

'Bro' Movie Review: What The Hell, Bro!

'Bro' Movie Review: What The Hell, Bro!

Movie: Bro Rating: 2/5 Banner: People Media Factory, Zee Studios Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Sai Dharam Tej, Priya Prakash Varrier, Ketika Sharma, Brahmanandam, Subbaraju, Urvashi Rautela and others Screenplay and dialogues: Trivikram Srinivas Music: S Thaman Director of Photography: Sujith Vaassudev Editor: Naveen Nooli Production design: A.S. Prakash Producer: T G Vishwa Prasad Directed by: Samuthirakani Release Date: July 28, 2023

Although there isn't as much hype surrounding it compared to Pawan Kalyan’s previous films, "Bro" is certainly one of the most anticipated films of the year. In the film, Pawan Kalyan played a god, and it also starred his nephew, Sai Dharam Tej.

Let's see how this film turned out.

Story: Mark (Sai Dharam Tej) is the oldest of three siblings, with two sisters and a younger brother. He lives with his mother and sisters, and he is always looking for ways to make money, never giving his time to anyone, not even his girlfriend Ramya (Ketika Sharma). In addition, he is a control freak.

He gets killed in a car accident on his way from Vizag to Hyderabad.

Mark begs Time, also known as Titan (Pawan Kalyan), the god of time, for more time so that he can complete his duties. Titan agrees, but only for the next 90 days.

How will Titan teach Mark the true meaning of life in the next 90 days, and what will Mark do in those 90 days?

Artistes’ Performances: Pawan Kalyan appears throughout the movie. Despite denying being God and referring to himself as Time, Pawan Kalyan's role is intended to be another version of "Gopala Gopala." His style, reminiscent of some of his older films, seems okay at first, but the role becomes more casual after a while. Pawan Kalyan's only activity in the film is walking or sitting and mouthing philosophical dialogues.

Sai Dharam Tej fits the bill. The main road accident in the story resembles his real-life accident. However, his performance is fairly routine, and he appears to be out of shape.

The banter between Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej contains moments of laughter, which may appeal more to fans than to the general audience.

Priya Prakash Varrier portrays Sai Dharam Tej's sister. Ketika Sharma's screen time is limited. Vennela Kishore, Prudhvi, as well as Tanikella Bharani play irrelevant roles. Raja Chembolu is okay.

Technical Excellence: Among the technical departments, cinematography is one that stands out. Sujith Vasudevan's work is especially noticeable in the sequences of Pawan Kalyan's entrance and the final scenes.

Thaman's songs aren't particularly catchy. The dialogues are merely adequate, nothing to write home about.

Highlights: The message

Drawback: No strength in the second half Pawan Kalyan’s character design Lack of strong emotions Weak songs

Analysis "Bro" is a remake of the Tamil film "Vinodaya Sitham," which was also directed by Samuthirakani. Simply put, it's the tale of a man who, after dying, is given the opportunity to make amends for his mistakes. The storyline is extremely familiar.

There are two major changes in the Telugu adaptation. In the Tamil version, the protagonist is a middle-aged man with a wife and two daughters. Here, the protagonist is a young man played by Sai Dharam Tej. Another difference is the casting of a major star like Pawan Kalyan in the part of "time." In the Tamil version, Samuthirakani played the role of "time."

Although these two alterations may have held promise on paper, they are not effective on the screen.

The first half of the film moves quickly, establishing Sai Dharam Tej's family and life, as well as the accident and his meeting with time. Time agreeing to give Sai Dharam Tej another 90 days to live, and so on, are narrated with a dose of comedy. Pawan Kalyan recreating some of his popular songs sounded funny at first. However, after the intermission, the film takes a complete 180-degree turn. It becomes too simple to take the proceedings seriously.

The writing's hollowness comes to life in the second half. All of the incidents or sequences are overly predictable. Furthermore, Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej's bar conversation and Tanikella Bharani's comedy track look ridiculous. The character of Prudhvi has no significance in the story.

Pawan Kalyan's re-enactment of old songs has also grown tedious at this point. In one scene, Pawan Kalyan simply rolls on top of a vehicle and laughs. Such sequences demonstrate that the team does not have enough material for the runtime.

Though the story's philosophy and message - everything happens for a reason and that we should treat others with kindness and compassion - are admirable, the resolution is too formulaic.

Attempts to make Pawan Kalyan's character more commercial have backfired and hurt the story. The soul of the original movie is gone. This is why the story loses its momentum in the important and final act.

Plus, the soundtrack is not the film's strong suit.

Overall, "Bro" has a promising start, and Pawan Kalyan's early sequences are entertaining, but the film loses steam as it becomes more routine. It also has plastic emotions. There is a lack of strength in the writing, and the important sequences feel rushed.

Bottom Line: Poor Writing

Bro Movie Review: A Good-Hearted Story Over-Powered By Fan Service

Bro Movie Review: A Good-Hearted Story Over-Powered By Fan Service

Director: Samuthirakani

Cast: Pawan Kalyan , Sai Dharam Tej, Rohini Molleti, Ketika Sharma, Priya Prakash Warrier

Writer-director Trivikram has always been fascinated with the concept of divinity. We can find overarching themes like God and humanity, in some capacity, spread throughout his filmography. Even in the mass-y, crowd-pleasing  Bheemla Nayak (2022), the official adaptation of  Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020), he brought a sacred quality to his rebel, non-conformist protagonist, also played by Pawan Kalyan. The inclusion of a myth centred on 'Kokkili Devera' was, without a doubt, the best part of  Bheemla Nayak .

Naturally, for Trivikram , who penned the adapted screenplay of  Bro , the remake of Samuthirakani 's fantasy drama  Vinodhaya Sitham (2021) ,  this story is the stuff of his dreams, with themes like morality and mortality served on a dazzling, mouth-watering platter. And the film's director Samuthirakani himself is vocal about the moral responsibility and social consciousness in his films. When these two forces come together, coupled with the power of a king-size star like Pawan Kalyan, we only expect the star power to give a thunderous boost to the film, not pull it back and settle for basic highs. This is where  Bro  falters. The makers had the opportunity and resources to create a missile but miss the mark by a mile and settle for flower pots and sparkles.

Sai Dharam Tej 's Markhadeyulu aka Mark is a busy and ambitious man. He is always running from pillar to post and barely has time for his family--a mother and two sisters. His agitation is such, that he fires an employee for forgetting to book a return ticket for his work trip from Vizag to Hyderabad. On his way back, Mark meets with a fatal accident. As his soul departs earth and waits for a transfer from our world to the afterlife, which is represented here with darkness all around, he and we are introduced to Time, played by Pawan Kalyan. Pawan first appears as a railway porter, a call-back to the iconic 'Vayyari Bhama' (which is played in the background), from  Thammudu (1999). When a distraught Mark pleads Time for... more time, so he can fulfill some of his responsibilities, he is granted an extension of 90 days to live. And Time, of course, accompanies him like, as put by a character, Bethaal.

It's a wonderful story that talks about the futility of our apprehensions about the future in the most practical way possible. We have seen many films that speak about the value of life, but  Bro  (or  Vinodhaya Sitham ) is that rare movie that underlines the bitter reality: our presence or life doesn't make much of a difference. Yes, it can be a hard pill to swallow but it's a perspective that's never explored or even addressed in our films. We, the Indian society, bound by familial values, only talk about loss and longing in our films, but never about moving on, a point that everyone arrives at invariably. This perspective, coupled with fantasy, is what lends novelty to the film. This is why the film soars in its final moments, when Mark faces the hard-hitting reality and accepts his fate. Kasarla Shyam's beautiful lyrics of 'Okasaari Putti' leave a lasting impact, even if they are elaborating and reiterating the essence of Pawan Kalyan's lines. The film does get the ending right, without a doubt. But to arrive at this heartfelt culmination, we have to endure numerous uninventive and forced attempts to create a high in an otherwise heartening story.

Every time the film remembers it has to appeal to the humongous fanbase of Pawan Kalyan, it resorts to a reference to a song from his filmography. And considering there is no paucity of moments to celebrate in his career, we get generous doses of fan service that runs the course of its time pretty soon, once the modus operandi of the film becomes apparent. This is my biggest problem with the film. Sure, there's nothing wrong with tipping hats to older films and including references to elicit a response from the audience but can that just be the only weapon in a writer's arsenal? I believe we, as movie lovers and fans, should be tripping on our favourite stars and the nostalgia associated with them. So when filmmakers make the stars themselves do it, we cannot help but wonder if they didn't have any better ideas to entertain us. Sure, the audience responded incredibly well to every popular reference in my theatre but it feels like the easiest way to achieve a mass moment. The interval shot, for instance, is a killer, and Thaman, as always, goes ballistic. I just wish there were more such moments, originating from the film's story and not the star's image.

The most disappointing moment in the film is the recreation of the 'La la Bheemla' from  Bheemla Nayak , which was released just a year ago. And neither did the makers have a fresh take on it or repurposed the song; they essentially recreated a bit from the song. Now, I wouldn't say the same about other songs used in the film because I understand the nostalgia value surrounding 'Killi Killi' from  Gudumba Shankar  (2004)   or 'Emi Sodhara' from  Tholi Prema  (1998) but  Bheemla Nayak  was just 17 months ago and I bet it's still fresh in our memory. It simply was an indication that the makers clearly ran out of ideas!

It was fun to see a nonchalant and cool Pawan Kalyan play around and have fun, especially after playing serious roles in  Vakeel Saab (2021) and  Bheemla Nayak , but every time the film fell back on a reference, I kept thinking that a star of his stature deserved better masala writing. And by now, the lines between Pawan's off-screen and on-screen personalities are blurred, giving the film ample opportunities to pen dialogues that smartly allude to his political career and  Bro  is no different— from his political party's symbol to his efforts, the writing accommodates all of it.

Trivikram's writing too is underwhelming, considering you'd expect the wizard of words to spin magic on a subject with such gravitas. Sure, there are some great lines about life and death but the thought behind it is more admirable than the dialogue itself. While that was my qualm with the film's writing and its tonality, the film's visual quality is far from perfect. Excessive usage of greenscreen is a major distraction and the keying is utterly visible, especially in the after-life sequences. Is visual finesse too much to ask for from a major production in 2023?

Despite all its flaws,  Bro  manages to harbour its noble intentions at the end and the final few moments are genuinely moving, when we see Mark embrace his flaws and the meaning of existence. The peril here is that  Vinodaya Sitham  never aspired for a larger-than-life quality. And Bro, on the other hand, cannot afford simplicity. The fact that the adaptation has to strike a balance between the 'nobility' of the source material and the 'bigness' expected from a big-ticket Pawak Kalyan entertainer yields mixed results. I wish the making complemented the vision and writing invigorated the intentions.

BRO Movie Review – An Average film

Bro Movie Review

Bro Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating: 2.5/5

Powerstar Pawan Kalyan and his nephew Sai Dharam Tej are teaming up for the first time in BRO. The film directed by Samuthirakani is inspired by the Tamil film Vinodaya Sitham. BRO is carrying decent expectations and is hitting the screens today. Ketika Sharma and Priya Prakash Warrier played other important roles. Top director Trivikram worked on the screenplay and dialogues for the Telugu version. Bollywood beauty Urvashi Rautela danced for a special number. People Media Factory and Zee Studios are the producers. Here is the review

Story: Mark alias Markandeyulu (Sai Dharam Tej) is the breadwinner of the family. After losing his father at a young age, Mark raises his brother and two sisters. Mark is a principled family head who is loved by all at home and in the office. The fantasy turn in the story is his happy life abruptly ending in an accident and since then backed by the TIME character (played by Pawan Kalyan). Mark gets a 90-day extension to his life and the rest of the story is what happens in the 90-day grace period.

BRO film has been adapted from a Tamil film called ‘Vinodhaya Sitham’. Directed by the same director Samuthirakani, who handled the original, this Telugu film ‘BRO’ outcome is a mixed bag. To improvise the film on the commercial front, the Telugu version team has overly dependent on power star pawan kalyan’s charismatic past. The writing team has compiled all Pawan Kalyan hit songs, and inserted them throughout the film sometimes perfectly syncs with the context, sometimes forcibly. In the first half the theme worked out and appeared entertaining. Pawan Kalyan as TIME shows up in various characters and entertains fans. His costumes and histrionics are of his top-class form. The subtle political flavor dialogues are smartly embedded without being out of place.

The main story is philosophical in nature, the climax summarizes the essence of modern days life very well. However, this essence of the film is overshadowed by elements added to appeal to Pawan’s fans. At some point, this film appears as if we are watching a Pawan Kalyan AV played in audio functions or in prerelease functions. There is not much scope for songs, but the songs that exist are decent. Production values by ‘people media factory’ are adequate. The VFX work could have been better though. Trivikram’s  improvisation doesn’t help much other than inserting fans stuff

Performances:

Pawan Kalyan rescues this film with his screen presence.  Sai Dharam Tej acted adequately as Mark. However, in the dance sequences apparently, he is not comfortable yet. Brahmanandam appears in one scene, and it is a good one. Vennela Kishore and Tanikella Bharani had very limited roles. Primarily the entire film is carried out between Pawan and Sai Dharam Tej.

Pawan Kalyan Screen Presence Pawan Hit Songs as a backdrop to a few scenes. Entertainment in the First half Crisp Run Time

Negatives :

Shallow story Overstuffed fans elements The original story lost its flavor.

Bro film works only for fans, subpar experience for all others. While trying to commercially elevate Pawan’s character, the writing team has overstuffed the fan elements aspect and lost the original soul of the film. Thaman’s energetic background score and Pawan’s past hit songs keep this film alive. An average film AT THE BEST!

Live while you live and take life as it comes is the concept of BRO. Pawan Kalyan agreed to be a part of this Sai Dharam Tej’s movie under Samuthirakani’s direction. BRO is an official remake of Vinodaya Sitham by the same director. The fantasy film was released today with good expectations and let us see If Sai Dharam Tej scores a hit again after his recent success Virupaksha. Here is the BRO movie review.

What Is It About?

Markandeyulu (Sai Dharam Tej) is a busy man whose priority is work and does not really have ‘time’ for others’ emotions or opinions. Mark meets with an accident that kills him and he then gets to meet the Time/God Titan (Pawan Kalyan). Titan gives 90 days for Mark as a second chance to change things. The rest of the story is what Mark realizes and how he manages to change the obvious.

Performances

Needless to say, Pawan Kalyan steals the show. His presence is the main asset of the film. Pawan’s vintage looks and enacting his own blockbuster songs from the past is a real treat for fans.

Sai Dharam Tej is decent as an ignorant workaholic. A few scenes between Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej are good.

Ketika Sharma, Priya Varrier, Rohini, Vennela Kishore, Tanikella Bharani, and others did their part. The role Priya Varrier did, does not match her popularity and it could have been done by anyone.

Technicalities

BRO shows Pawan Kalyan in super stylish looks. The background music is good by Thaman, however, the songs are not impressive. In fact, the old songs of Pawan Kalyan worked better in small bits.

The VFX work could have been a lot better. There were many scenes that showed poor graphics. The screenplay is clumsy at times due to the series of scenes rushing.

Pawan Kalyan Dialogues & BGM Climax and Pre-climax Song

Thumbs Down

Weak Narration VFX Songs Over-the-Top Scenes

The concept is not new, but a little different from what we have seen earlier like Yamaleela to the latest Ori Devuda that dealt with the ‘second chance’. In fact, the director here made the God most of the time stay in the picture to make it an elaborate one, unlike other movies.

A man who thinks he is the center of everything realizes how things actually work upon ‘time’, even if he is not there.

The first 20 minutes are over-the-top establishing scenes and the comedy also fails to work there before getting into the actual plot. The entry of God is a powerful one.

Pawan Kalyan as Titan runs the show until the interval with his swag and old songs now and then. His mannerisms enthrall his fans the best. The bonding between Markandeyulu and his girlfriend was not established well.

Sai Dharam Tej has most of the scenes in combination with Pawan Kalyan and the latter’s presence throughout the movie is one strong asset BRO has. But the VFX in most of their scenes is pathetic.

The narrative does not get impressive due to the lack of emotional connection and it continues until the pre-climax episodes. The second half gets predictable in most parts. The climax followed by the song actually made a lot of sense than it did in the whole movie. The life lessons taught by Titan in the climax and the message asking everyone to accept life as it comes are conveyed well.

Overall, BRO has a good storyline, but the weak narrative does not let it becomes great. BRO makes a good watch for Pawan Kalyan’s fans but ‘time’ will tell how it fares at the box office.

Bottomline: ‘BRO’ – Story Proposes, Narration Disposes

BRO is Pawan Kalyan’s latest film, where he plays a key role. Sai Dharam Tej is the main hero and the film has been directed by Samuthirakani, who has directed the original. The film has released today, and read our review to find out if the film is worth that hype or not.

Story: Mark(Sai Dharam Tej) is a family man who has the responsibility of getting his siblings settled. But he passes away in a tragic car accident. He then goes to the heavens and meets Time God played by Pawan Kalyan. Upset that he could not do anything for his family, Mark asks for one more chance to set things right. The Time God, not only gives him a chance but also comes along with him back in life. How Mark uses this opportunity to set things right is the story.

Performances: Sai Dharam has the major role but he does not do well with his performance. He had a very good role to showcase his emotions but Tej looks clueless in the film and gives the same funny expression for all the major scenes.

But it is Pawan Kalyan who steals the show with his histrionics. Be it his dialogue delivery or fun mannerisms, Pawan kills it and his fans will love his solid avatar. Rohini was good in her role and Ketika Sharma was impressive. The rest of the cast was just okay.

Technicalities: Thaman has given a very disappointing score for the film. Not one song impresses us. But his BGM was decent and lifted the film in key areas. The manner in which the film is edited looks good but in that a key emotional angle also goes missing. The screenplay by Samuthirakani is decent only in the second half. The camerawork and production values are decent.

Analysis: BRO is the official remake of the Tamil film, Vinodhaya Sitham. Trivikram Srinivas has given the dialogue and has added his touch to the film. While the adaptation is good, the execution is not that great. The key emotions in the film go for a toss. There are many scenes which could have been elevated well but that does not happen at all. One gets an empty feeling seeing all the family scenes. They look forced in many areas and the second half is rushed.

When compared to the second, the first half of the film is good. There are enough fan moments that the fans will enjoy and this part has been neatly pulled off. A lot is going through Sai Dharam Tej’s mind and he needs to show the pain which he got as a second chance in life. But as the film is rushed, the pain is not conveyed properly.

There are many ways to showcase realization scenes but the director Samuthirkani did not elevate this aspect. As Sai Tej holds the key, his performance would have lifted the film well. But in the end, he disappoints and hams in the film. But one should give credit to director Smauthirakani as he has showcased Pawan Kalyan superbly and that will be loved by the fans.

Verdict: Overall, BRO is for ardent Pawan Kalyan fans. The star hero does not disappoint the fans and he is a show stealer. But the rest of the emotions and execution in BRO is half-baked and ends as a rushed affair.

BRO Movie Review

Release Date : November 26,2021

123telugu.com Rating : 2.5/5

Starring: Naveen Chandra, Avika Gor, Sai Ronak, Sanjana Sarathy

Director: Karthik Thupurani

Producers: JJR Ravichand

Cinematography : Azeem Mohammad

Music : Shekar Chandra

Editor: Viplav Nyshadam

Naveen Chandra and Avika Gor starrer BRO is available for streaming on Sony Liv now. The film skipped theatrical release and premiered directly on OTT. Let’s see what the film has to offer.

Madhav(Naveen Chandra) is sent to Saudi Arabia at a very young age to work as a labourer by his parents so that his income can be used to cover the medical expenses of his terminally ill sister, Subbu(Avika Gor). But things take a turn for the worst after Subbu passes away. What happens later forms the rest of the plot.

Plus Points:

The film banks on the fine performances from the lead cast. Naveen Chandra and Avika Gor deliver natural performances. Naveen as a grumpy brother who goes through various hardships to fund the medical expenses of his sister comes up with a good act. Avika delivers a good performance as well.

Next come the aesthetically appealing visuals. The cinematographer Azim captures the visuals of the picturesque rural landscapes with great conviction. The visual storytelling is very good. The film is strong on the technical front.

Minus Points:

While the premise is fresh and novel, the narrative isn’t compelling enough. The show-paced screenplay doesn’t help the cause. The brother-sister track starts off well, but it turns monotonous after a point. The ‘bro’ ‘bro’ conversations between them become a tad annoying beyond a point.

Needless to say, the film doesn’t cater to all sections of the audience, given its new-age theme. The story isn’t rounded off very well towards the end. The film is a remake of a Malayalam film titled Koode and for those who’ve watched the original, the Naveen Chandra starrer might not make for an as compelling watch.

Technical Departments:

The film is directed by New York Film Academy alumnus, Karthik Thupurani and he tries to come up with something new for the Telugu audience. The storyline is fresh but the narrative is not so engaging. The background score is good. The real standout is the cinematography. The beautiful locales are showcased very well.

BRO is more of a coming of age film and it has a feel-good vibe. The brother-sister track is fresh. But the narration is way too slow to make for a compelling watch. The film progresses along on a predictable note from the start till the end. It makes for underwhelming watch.

Bro Movie Review: A Concoction Confused Between Serving Pawan Kalyan’s Stardom & Telling A Story

More than a film about a potent subject, bro is now a fan service.

bro movie review and rating

Star Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Sai Dharam Tej, Priya Prakash Varrier, Samuthirakani, and ensemble.

Director: Samuthirakani

Bro Movie Review

What’s Good: Pawan Kalyan’s swagger that translates so well on screen and how it compliments his character, is fun to watch.

What’s Bad: it is mostly a rehash and not something that you haven’t seen already.

Loo Break: there are numerous half-baked lazy songs; that’s your cue.

Watch or Not?: If you are a Pawan Kalyan fan, nothing can stop you. It’s a fan service and not even one that is shaped nicely.

Language: Telugu (with subtitles at selected theatres).

Available On: In Theatres Near You

Runtime: 134 Minutes

An arrogant man-child Markandeya (Sai Tej), dies in a road accident. God of time gives him a limited second chance at life, and now he has to fulfill his responsibilities before his time ends.

Bro Movie Review

Bro Movie Review: Script Analysis

How much control do we have over our life? Is a question that cinema has been exploring for a while. The concept where a man stands on the boundary between the real world and the afterlife is something that has been fascinating people for at least a couple of decades now. India mostly has seen it in more commercial movies like God Tussi Great Ho and Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!, The former was a remake of the Hollywood movie Bruce Almighty. Years later when Samuthirakani brought back the plot in his Tamil movie Vinodhaya Sitham, the reception was, as expected mixed.

Now with Bro, he remakes his Tamil story into Telugu and brings in a top star to drive his point home. With Trivikram Srinivas writing the Telugu version, they end up diluting their subject even more because now the responsibility to do a fan service arose the moment they cast Pawan Kalyan . The core of Bro is in the question about existence how one’s presence affects the world around him. It is a substantial question and one that can be explored pretty well. But the writer and the filmmaker here choose to rather focus on the casting coupe they have managed to pull off.

So now, more than a film about a potent subject, Bro is now a fan service that is filled with innumerable ‘King-like’ walking and sitting shots of Pawan Kalyan, and infinite references to his songs, movies, his political ideologies, and much more. This affects the movie in a massive way because he was introduced as the God Of Time with so much panache, but you have now associated him with Kalyan’s real self and the line has blurred. Post the first three references; he is now Pawan Kalyan and not the character you want me to see.

Add to this the urge to break into random weirdly composed and picturised songs every 10 minutes. Pawan Kalyan snapping is used as a device that controls the world, because he is Time, remember? But barring the 6-7 genuine snaps, he starts snapping randomly to break into dance numbers and one even brings in Urvashi Rautela , we deserved Thanos; he wasn’t wrong! The decoration that the makers lace Bro with kills its very essence and doesn’t let its subject breathe at all.

The last few scenes by the climax, where you meet the man in his most vulnerable moments, are good, but it is too late by then.

Bro Movie Review: Star Performance

Sai Dharam Tej is comfortable when it comes to being comical and kicking some goons, but the moment he has be emotional is when his ship begins to sink. He is a man-child who can sulk at anything and is also a control freak. Too rich for an AGM of a company. The character is written in broad strokes and with no realism to him.

Pawan Kalyan walks in with his swagger and owns it. But as said, he never becomes the character but remains his real self throughout. Priya Varrier gets nothing more than being a sister in love with a boy without her elder brother knowing and an emotional scene that concludes things.

Rest everyone is a one-tone part with not much as redemption.

Bro Movie Review

Bro Movie Review: Direction, Music

Samuthirakani’s direction is haywire and completely all over the place. One can see his struggle to tell a story and also cater to the fans of Pawan Kalyan. This ends up creating a weird mix that doesn’t do either. His idea of introducing an entire platter of songs that have no connection to the movie and its story is the most bothering part of it all.

The music is exactly the kinds we want to skip except two numbers, and you already know which ones.

Bro Movie Review: The Last Word

Bro tries to tell a story and be at service to Pawan Kalyan’s fandom but does neither by the time it ends.

(BRO Movie Review in telugu)

Bro movie review: A few good laughs and nothing more

A few good laughs in a movie that spans 2 hours 5 minutes is not enough. The film more often than not placed higher value on nostalgia than story telling.

Bro movie review: A few good laughs and nothing more

Director: P Samuthirakani

Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Sai Dharam Tej

Language: Telugu

The idea that death is the destination and life is nothing but a journey towards this destination is the grand idea that Trivikram has adapted from Tamil film Vinodhaya Seetham . Helmed by Samuthirakani, who directed the original, Bro starring Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej, brings to life the story of an arrogant, pompous young man who believes that only he is capable of shouldering responsibilities in his family.

He assumes that his absence would incapacitate his family, and bring them to the streets. In Markandeya’s (Sai Dharam Tej) case, his struggles to an extent quantify his fear, however, the fact that life does go on for those left behind is something that he is forced to accept.

Now, the story is simple enough and it was portrayed as such in Tamil. With Pawan Kalyan ’s entry into the mix, however, Bro takes on an avatar that doesn’t just include random dance numbers, but also multiple moments which idolize Pawan Kalyan. Each moment received attention from fans as the theater was peppered with hooting, screaming and clapping.

The film had to become bigger than the story to be befitting of Pawan Kalyan’s stardom and that is sad and unfortunate because the truly enjoyable parts in the film was the more subdued rapport between Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej. Their conversations are a mix of witty, thoughtful and outright hilarious. Especially the scene where Markandeya has to swallow his pride and return to work just moments after rage quitting is one worth mentioning.

Yet, a few good laughs in a movie that spans 2 hours 15 minutes is not enough. The film more often than not places higher value on nostalgia than story telling. It banks on the said nostalgia factor to elicit a reponse from the audience, not realizing the fact if more attention was paid to the story, it could have very well featured fresh iconic moments. The repurposing of popular songs from Pawan Kalyan’s filmography becomes tedious after a point, especially so when the film begins to delve into melodrama for an impactful ending.

I would obviously have preferred for Markandeya’s younger sister to have had a better relationship arc with her brother. In fact, the moments that really shined were of Markandeya learning time and again that he was indeed wrong, and he became more relatable with every punch that his ego took. If the film had more such nuanced moments instead of a rehash of songs from hit Pawan Kalyan movies such as Bheemla Nayak, Bro would have been so much more fun.

Also, inconsistent is the film’s dialogues and it’s intention. One moment it speaks for equality and the next moment we see an unnecessary set piece with an ‘item number’. I wonder if objectifying women falls under a different bracket. Then, there are dialogues such as “Only the rich usually get diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.” The jump in logic at this point has become something one has come to expect of Telugu commercial films. If only Bro was a simple commercial film, writing it off would have been simpler too. Instead, what we get is a brilliant idea with inferior execution.

BOTTOM LINE Not Enough, Bro!

OUR RATING 2.25/5

Pawan-Kalyan-BRO-Telugu-Movie-Review

Mark, aka Markandaya (Sai Dharam Tej), has too many responsibilities on his shoulders. He has to take care of his family, comprising of brother, sister and mother. Amidst all this, he forgets to live his life and always chases for a bigger position.

One day, unfortunately, Mark meets with an accident. The movie’s basic plot is what happens when God (Pawan Kalyan) gives him time to set things right.

Performances

Pawan Kalyan has a fully jolly role playing God. It is in the same zone as Gopala Gopala, but more energetic, filled with fan moments here. The energy and swag can’t be missed from his intro to the end. The styling is also the best post his comeback. It lifts the film’s mood but gets restricted to the first half only. There was nothing much to chew for him in the second hour, even though there was scope. He can only elevate things to a level, given the content.

Sai Dharam Tej has the role of actual meat. He has to do the heavy lifting as far as emotion and action are concerned. He is okay on his part. The physicality is an issue, but he looks better than on his previous outing. The effort to do well is there, but the situations make his act passable.

Bro’s narrative heavily depends on the chemistry between the two male leads. In this department, both Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej scored initially. It is not magical, but interesting nonetheless. However, after a point, the duo lack the content to take the chemistry to the next level.

Director-Samuthirakani

Samudrakani directs Bro. It is a remake of his Tamil original Vinodaya Sitham, released as an OTT outing. The movie is about God giving a second chance and making the person realise the value of time.

The director gets to the core point of the movie quickly without wasting much time. The characters and the world are established within the first few minutes, and God’s entry soon follows it.

The characterisation of God (played energetically by Pawan Kalyan) and the fun banter between God and Mark carry the first half. Entertainment is nothing out of the world but makes the narrative tick. The fan-pleasing moments related to Pawan Kalyan are integrated well into the proceedings.

The ride until the interval is smooth and makes one look forward to the second half despite the okayish nature.

Unfortunately, the second half of the movie falters in engaging the viewer. The writing and situations are the culprits here. The former lacks depth, whereas the latter lacks relatability. Both are essential to lift the narrative to the next level, but it doesn’t happen.

The bond between God and Mark, too, feels stretched here. The entertainment which worked in the first half feels stretched and lacks the punch. It feels like Trivikram is trying too hard and yet visibly failing.

And finally, the critical emotional block has zero connection. The whole setting and the actors go through the motions artificially. It all feels inorganic and formulaic, ticking the boxes to complete the narrative. The ending message is good, but it’s a little too late.

The second half has a lot of scope, but the utter lack of effort to deliver on either count – fun or emotion- is the biggest disappointment. It feels as if the writer and director thought it enough (when it isn’t) and didn’t try anything at all.

Overall, Bro offers somewhat fresh, yet familiar plot. However, the content fails to generate the emotions. It leaves one disinterested by the end. Give it a try for the theme and decent fun initially, but keep the expectations firmly under check.

SAi-Dharam-Tej-BRO-Telugu-Movie-Review

Kethika Sharma has a forgettable outing. She appears in a song in the first half and then a few scenes later disappears. She then appears in the second half intermittently and is gone. Priya Prakash Varrior, too, has a random part that fails to register.

Rohini has a vital role in the proceedings but has been entirely wasted. Vennela Kishore does his usual, whereas Pruthvi appears briefly in what looks like a clear dig at a politician in the news.

Music-Director-Thaman

SS Thaman has disappointed with the songs. There is no doubt in that regard. However, he makes up for it with the background score. It is pleasant and fresh and devoid of the usual cacophony associated with mass outings. However, the second half doesn’t register even on that count, as it lacks the meat.

Sujith Vaassudevan’s cinematography is neat without overemphasis on visuals. The narrative looks clean and crisp when the regular drama happens. The visual effects could have been better. Trivikram’s writing works in parts only. The comedy is alright, but it is still nowhere near his best. The emotional blocks lack his trademark depth. It doesn’t feel like he has put his heart into it. The production values are okay.

BRO Movie Review by M9News

Final Report:

Overall, BRO is partly entertaining with a somewhat fresh, yet familiar plot, but it lacks emotions and full-fledged fun. It ends up as a watchable fare at best. Not enough Bro!

First Half Report:

First half of BRO is decent. The PK-SDT combo generates humor, and Thaman’s BGM complements the theme effectively. PK’s popular songs are placed perfectly. Second half holds the key now.

— BRO show started. Sai Dharam’s character established quickly. Stay tuned for the first half report.

Whats' Behind

Naveen Chandra, Avika Gor's upcoming film titled interestingly as BRO attracted the attention of all with their unique promotions. The film directed by Karthik Thupurani is streaming on Sony Liv. Let us see what BRO offered to movie lovers.

Story Review

Since childhood Madhav (Naveen Chandra) loves his little sister Subhadra aka Subbu (Avika Gor) a lot. However, circumstances force him to stay away from her in Dubai. Where this leads to and whether his relationship with his sister will be the same when he returns after many years, how his childhood love Radha (Sanjana Sarathy) and Subbu's love Savyasachi (Sai Ronak) are connected should be found out on screen.

Artists, Technicians Review

Director Karthik Thupurani decided to highlight the brother-sister relation in a novel manner and in order to do so, he drew inspiration from Malayalam film Koode by Anjali Menon and is the remake of the Marathi film Happy Journey. Tollywood filmmakers touched upon brother-sister relationships many times and so coming to the story, offers nothing new.

However, Karthik Thupurani decided to balance the brother-sister sentiment blending them with good entertaining elements. Though the film boils down to fulfilling the last death wish, it doesn't turn melodramatic. But for all his hard work, he underplayed the emotions and the fantasy element did not connect chords with the viewers. The writing failed and he should have concentrated on elevating the emotions to another level.

Repetitive scenes creep in after an interesting start and the director loses track deviating from the main plot. He overdid by comparing Naveen Chandra to Krishna and lifting the problems of his family like Krishna lifting Govardhanagiri. Romantic elements are not elevated either in the case of Naveen Chandra and Sanjana or Avika Gor and Sai Ronak.

Naveen Chandra performed well in the emotional role. He showed variations as a youngster who loves football, who misses his sister dearly, works hard for his family, and then suffers the shocking loss. Avika Gor performed the role of Naveen Chandra's sister in a bubbly and lively manner. She attracted with her cute expressions.

Sanjana Sarathy and Sai Ronak got good roles to showcase their performances but they at times did well and at times faultered. Devi Prasad, Srilakshmi, and others performed according to their roles. Sekhar Chandra's music is good and soulful and the background score is in sync with the storyline. His background score gave a good feel to the viewers. Azeez Mohamad with his cinematography captured the scenic locations of Araku in an appealing manner. Viplav Nyshadham's editing could have been better are there are many repetitive scenes that dragged the film.

Rating Analysis

Karthik Thupurani on debut dared to be different and decided to highlight the brother-sister bonding in a romantic entertainer. He tried to rehash the Marathi and Malayalam films but despite his best efforts, he failed to take the brother-sister emotions to another level to connect chords with the viewers. He failed to do the same with the romantic elements. Thus it turned half-baked and as the story is routine, except for a few scenes and climax, Karthik couldn't propel Bro-to another level with his screenplay and direction. Considering all these points, CJ goes with a 2.5 rating, BRO.

  • Edgar Wright engages with fans by reading and reacting to Letterboxd reviews of Shaun of the Dead , celebrating the film's 20th anniversary.
  • Wright's distinct style and genre-blending talents have earned him a cult following, with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz leading in ratings.
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has the most fans of Wright's work on Letterboxd, showcasing his broad appeal.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Shaun of the Dead , director Edgar Wright has taken to reading and reacting to some of the most notable Letterboxd reviews of his beloved horror-comedy. As fans gear up for the film's re-release in U.S. theatres on August 30 , via Focus Features, Wright’s engagement with the community that has kept the film alive and well over the years adds a special layer of connection.

Wright, known for his distinct style and a penchant for blending genres, has always had a close relationship with his fanbase. This latest interaction only reinforces that bond, as the director dives into the reviews, offering his thoughts and perhaps even a few laughs as he revisits the film through the eyes of his audience. Shaun of the Dead , which has an impressive 4.0 average rating on Letterboxd, remains one of Wright’s highest-rated films on the platform. The film, alongside Hot Fuzz —which sits slightly higher with a 4.1 average—has cemented Wright as a cult favorite among cinephiles.

Interestingly, despite Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz leading in ratings, it’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World that boasts the title of Wright's film with the "most fans" on Letterboxd . With a 3.9 rating, Scott Pilgrim may not be his highest-rated work, but it clearly resonates deeply with viewers, earning it a spot as the 26th film with the most fans on the app. Wright’s engagement with Letterboxd doesn’t stop at reading reviews, his personal list of 1,000 favorite movies is featured on the platform , allowing patrons and pro members to track how many of Wright's favorites they’ve seen. This list, which Wright describes as a "personal and subjective" collection assembled for his own enjoyment, serves as a window into the director’s influences and cinematic tastes.

What Is 'Shaun of the Dead' About?

The film follows Shaun, played by Simon Pegg , a 29-year-old electronics store employee whose life is going nowhere. He spends his days at work, his evenings in the pub with his best friend Ed ( Nick Frost ), and is generally stuck in a rut. His girlfriend, Liz ( Kate Ashfield ), is frustrated by Shaun's lack of ambition and breaks up with him, pushing him to finally take some initiative in his life.

However, Shaun's attempt to win Liz back is complicated by the sudden outbreak of a zombie apocalypse. With the undead rising all around them, Shaun and Ed embark on a mission to save their loved ones, including Liz, Shaun's mother Barbara ( Penelope Wilton ), and a few other friends. Their plan? Hole up in their favorite pub, The Winchester, and wait for the whole thing to blow over.

As Shaun of the Dead returns to the big screen, fans both old and new have the perfect excuse to revisit the film, not just through a re-watch but also through the unique lens provided by Letterboxd and Wright’s own reflections on his work. Shaun of the Dead returns to theatres on August 30. Stay tuned to Collider for more.
