Project Requirements
For this project, you are to create a report about one of the musical artists/groups that you discovered during this trimester. Because it is impossible to cover every Rock artist, there are a few names included of people we were not able to cover, but would still qualify. If you have another band/Rockstar in mind, you must get it approved by me before proceeding.
The report you make will be submitted as evidence of your work and learning.
Your report will be presented to the class.
The product you create for this presentation may look like: • A Video “Rockumentary” OR • A PowerPoint OR • A Publisher brochure/Newsletter/Traditional Book report OR • Develop your own idea and get prior approval for it before starting
- Full Project Overview Project expectations and requirements, project ideas, etc.
- Project Rubric Check to see that you have completed everything for the project
Research Reminders
- Your notes and final product MUST be in your own words. Putting other people’s work into your notes or project, without paraphrasing into your own words is plagiarism . Use quotation marks wisely.
- You must give credit to the source when you find information.
- Use CTRL + F to search for your term within an online article or website
- ASK for help if you aren’t sure about your research process. We can help!
Suggested Resources
- Encyclopedia Britannica Basic background information about a variety of topics. This is a link to the paid subscription that WT has and will likely include more information than the free online version.

K-8 Art Lessons Inspired by Great Artists
Artist Research Project
A culmination of my middle school students’ Art History education, this is one of my school’s favorite projects.
Students learn about and take notes on a different "Artist of the Month" all year (or for several years when the student has been at my school for their whole middle school education).
In the spring of their 8th grade year, students choose one artist to write a paper on and create artwork in the style of.
A crucial step before beginning an Artist Research Project is to decide how students will learn about the artists. I teach my students about a variety of artists using PowerPoints from my TpT store . If you teach a student about an artist of the month every month from grades 6-8, you could cover 30 artists by the end of 8th grade! Or you could teach one artist every week to cover even more!
My students take notes on the artists we learn about using a note-taking worksheet , which asks for just about all the information they need in order to write their papers. At the middle school level, I prefer this method over having students independently research artists using books and the internet, because it gives them the practice of writing papers without the temptation of plagiarism. Students may be intimidated by the idea of writing a research paper, and using the internet to search for information makes it way too easy to just "copy and paste". Having them take notes on the artist first forces them to form their own sentences and paragraphs, helping them develop the necessary skill of putting information in their own words. If you do choose to allow your students to independently research their artists, I suggest spending some time addressing plagiarism with your class.
The second part of the project is creating artwork in the style of the artist. Students can replicate one of the artist's most significant works, or create artwork in the artist's style. The artwork students choose to recreate should be discussed in their paper. These finished artworks make a stunning end-of-the-year art display!!
This full Artist Research Project , with the Student Instruction Handout, a Grading Rubric, and the note-taking worksheet, is available on my TpT store, All About Art !

Famous Artists and Musicians Lesson Plan: Who Inspires YOU?
In this artists and musicians lesson plan, which is adaptable for any grade level, students use BrainPOP or BrainPOP Jr. resources to explore the life and works of a self-selected musician or artist. Students will research their chosen musician or artist and then create an original composition inspired by the person they researched.
Lesson Plan Common Core State Standards Alignments
Students will:.
- Explore the life and works of a self-selected artist or musician.
- Create an original composition inspired by their selected artist or musician.
- Computers with internet access for BrainPOP or BrainPOP Jr.
- Materials for students to create their own piece of art or music
Preparation:
Lesson procedure:.
- Tell the class the name of one of your favorite artists or musicians and share examples of his or her work. Explain what you like about the musician or artist's work. You might also want to share a few examples of things that you've created that were inspired by your selected person's style.
- Show students the names of all the reading level-appropriate artists and/or musicians featured on BrainPOP and/or BrainPOP Jr. Facilitate a discussion around their work. Have students seen or heard of any of these artists' creations?
- If students are not familiar with many of the artists or musicians, show some of the movie features (the Related Reading and Q&A for BrainPOP movies or Background Information page for BrainPOP Jr. movies) to familiarize the class with various artists' lives and backgrounds. You can also provide time for students to explore these resources on their own to find an artist that is relevant to them.
- Ask students to select an artist whose life or works are intriguing to them, and provide the guidelines for their projects. If you have previously studied the techniques of famous artists, discuss these experiences with students, and encourage students to use the analyzation strategies they've learned.
- Allow students to watch the BrainPOP movie on their chosen artist and explore the related resources. Students should use this information to guide them in creating their original composition.
- Confer with students as they begin their compositions. Guide students to understand qualities that make the artist's voice and ideas unique, and talk about how students can build upon those qualities with their own creations.
- When all students have completed their artwork or musical composition, allow the class to spend time exploring one another's creations. Invite other faculty and parents to attend and celebrate your students' work!

Description
This art project explores the use of pouring acrylic paint onto parchment paper and when dry, peeling it up to cut and layer to create interesting landscape images. First students will research the life and work of artist, Rebecca Green, and will complete the "see-think-wonder" method when explaining her work. Thumbnail and full page sketches as well as a small experimental piece will be completed before the work begins on the large piece of art. After the project is done students will complete a journal reflection.
NOTE: You will need to provide white pencil crayons for this project.
NOTE: You will need to do a demonstration or give instruction as to how to work with watercolour paints as this project does not cover this.
