Alice munro's daughter says her mother did nothing to stop abusive stepfather.

The daughter of renowned Canadian author Alice Munro has revealed that she suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather and that her mother, a Nobel Prize winner, turned a blind eye to it.

In an op-ed published Sunday in the Toronto Star, Andrea Skinner wrote that Munro’s husband at the time, Gerald Fremlin, started abusing her in 1976 when she was 9 years old.

She wrote that she was visiting her mother that summer at her home in Clinton, Ontario, when, while Munro was away, Fremlin “climbed into the bed where I was sleeping and sexually assaulted me.”

Alice Munro, Nobel Prize-winning short story author, dies at 92

Munro died earlier this summer at the age of 92. The author was best known for her short stories , often placing her characters in rural Ontario — where Munro grew up. She was called the "master of the contemporary short story" by the Swedish Academy that awarded her the Nobel in 2013.

Since Skinner's op-ed was published, the literary world has expressed shock and sorrow, with authors publicly grappling with the formative work of Munro with the impact of her daughter's allegations.

Rebecca Makkai, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for The Great Believers , posted on X of Munro and the allegations, "I love her work so much that I don’t want to lose it, but am also horrified to see the meanings of many favorite (foundational, to me) stories shift under us."

Skinner said she is coming forward now because she wants her story “to become part of the stories people tell about my mother. I never wanted to see another interview, biography or event that didn’t wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me, and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with, and protect, my abuser.”

Skinner said the abuse continued for years, with Fremlin often exposing himself to Skinner, telling the young girl about her mother's sexual needs and the “little girls in the neighborhood” that he told her he liked.

Skinner confided in her stepmother, who told James Munro, Skinner's father. James Munro did not confront his ex-wife about the abuse, and the assault continued with no adult intervention, Skinner wrote.

The abuse, and the heavy secret and silence she was forced to keep, took a drastic toll on Skinner, who developed debilitating migraines and bulimia as an adult. When she was 25, she wrote a letter to Munro, finally coming forward about the abuse.

Munro told her she felt betrayed and likened the abuse to an affair, a response that devastated Skinner, she wrote.

Canadian Alice Munro Wins Nobel's Literature Prize

In response, Fremlin wrote letters to Munro and the family, threatening to kill Skinner if she ever went to the police. He blamed Skinner for the abuse and described her as a child as a "home wrecker." He also threatened to expose photos he took of Skinner when she was a girl.

Munro went back to Fremlin and stayed with him until he died in 2013, Skinner wrote. Munro allegedly said “that she had been ‘told too late,’ she loved him too much, and that our misogynistic culture was to blame if I expected her to deny her own needs, sacrifice for her children, and make up for the failings of men. She was adamant that whatever had happened was between me and my stepfather. It had nothing to do with her," Skinner wrote in her essay.

In 2005, Skinner could stay quiet no longer. She reported Fremlin, who was 80 at the time, to police in Ontario, using letters he sent to the family as evidence. He pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault and received a suspended sentence and probation for two years.

Skinner said she never reconciled with her mother, but has since rebuilt a relationship with her siblings.

Munro's Books, the company that Alice and James Munro started together when they were married, issued a statement of support for Skinner. The company has been independently owned since 2014 and wasn't speaking on behalf of the family.

The company said, "Learning the details of Andrea’s experience has been heartbreaking for all of us here at Munro’s Books. Along with so many readers and writers, we will need time to absorb this news and the impact it may have on the legacy of Alice Munro, whose work and ties to the store we have previously celebrated. It is important to respect Andrea’s choices over how her story is shared more widely."

The statement continued, "This story is Andrea’s to tell, and we will not be commenting further at this time."

The youngest daughter of celebrated Canadian author Alice Munro has opened up about the sexual abuse she experienced by her stepfather and the deep hurt she felt when her mother chose to support her husband instead of her child.

In a first-person essay published in the Toronto Star on Sunday, Andrea Robin Skinner described how the Nobel Prize-winning short story writer remained in her marriage to second husband Gerald Fremlin even after she learned of the abuse.

In the Star piece, Skinner said she opted to tell her story so Canadians could have a more nuanced picture of the Nobel Laureate, who was revered as a literary icon long before her death in May.

"I ... wanted this story — my story — to become part of the stories people tell about my mother," she wrote. "I never wanted to see another interview, biography or event that didn't wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with and protect my abuser."

Skinner wrote in the Star that the abuse began in 1976 when she was nine and visiting her mother in Ontario for the summer after she spent most of the year in British Columbia with her father. She wrote that Fremlin climbed into the bed where she was sleeping and initiated sexual contact while Munro was out of the house.

On the final day of her visit, she said Fremlin began asking for details about her sex life and sharing aspects of his own while driving her to the airport.

Skinner said she initially told her father and stepbrother what had happened, but neither she nor her father informed Munro right away.

She said Fremlin continued to expose himself to her and proposition her for sex until he lost interest when she reached her teens.

Skinner said she experienced "private pain" for many years due to Fremlin's predatory behaviour, suffering from bulimia, insomnia and migraines, and dropping out of an international development program at the University of Toronto.

Daughter says she received no sympathy from Munro

In her 20s, Skinner wrote Munro a letter detailing Fremlin's abuse, but she said she received no sympathy from her mother.

"I ... was overwhelmed by her sense of injury to herself," Skinner wrote in the Star. "She believed my father had made us keep the secret in order to humiliate her. She then told me about other children Fremlin had 'friendships' with, emphasizing her own sense that she, personally, had been betrayed. Did she realize she was speaking to a victim and that I was her child? If she did, I couldn't feel it."

She reported the abuse to police in 2005 and Fremlin ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault.

But, Munro remained with Fremlin until he died in 2013. Munro said she had been "told too late" about the abuse, that she loved him too much to leave him and that she couldn't be expected to "deny her own needs," Skinner wrote in the Star.

She said the abuse she suffered remained an open secret in the Munro family for years and, for a time, led to estrangement from her entire family.

Now, as a meditation and mindfulness teacher, Skinner said she has reconciled with her siblings but never with her mother.

Bookstore supports daughter

Munro's Books, a bookstore Alice Munro founded in Victoria with her first husband, James, posted a statement on its website supporting Skinner. The bookstore has been independently owned since 2014.

"Munro's Books unequivocally supports Andrea Robin Skinner as she publicly shares her story of her sexual abuse as a child," the store said. "Learning the details of Andrea's experience has been heartbreaking."

The bookstore also released a statement on its website from Andrea, her siblings Jenny and Sheila, and her step-brother Andrew.

"By acknowledging and honouring Andrea's truth, and being very clear about their wish to end the legacy of silence, the current store owners have become part of our family's healing," they said. "We wholly support the owners and staff."

A Lehigh University student with a full scholarship pleaded guilty to a forgery change and was expelled after admitting online that he faked admissions documents and used ChatGPT to write his essay.

Aryan Anand, 19, was expelled from the private Pennsylvania university this spring after falsifying documents, including his father’s death certificate, tax documents and an email address to impersonate a school principal, according to a report from the Northampton County District Attorney’s Office obtained by Inside Higher Ed .

“Lehigh University revoked his status as a student and his admission was rescinded,” a university spokesperson said in a statement to Inside Higher Ed . “A thorough investigation by Lehigh University police revealed significant fraudulent materials submitted for admission, leading to charges.” 

Anand was admitted to Lehigh in August 2023 and shortly after created a post on the social media site Reddit titled “I have built my career and life on lies.” In the post, he detailed his fabrications of multiple documents to gain a full-ride scholarship to the university. 

A Reddit user sent the post to the Lehigh University Police Department, which conducted an investigation and found the claims were true. 

Anand was arrested in April and faced multiple charges that could have resulted in more than 30 years in prison. Last month, he pleaded guilty to one count of forgery. Lehigh officials decided to not seek restitution, which totaled roughly $85,000, on the condition he return to his home in India. 

Anand admitted to using ChatGPT to write his admissions essay, according to The Hindustan Times . He applied to several universities and got rejected from Ivy League institutions but was successful with Lehigh University.

Alice Munro’s Daughter Andrea Skinner Shares “Terrible Secret” of Stepfather’s Sexual Abuse—and Munro’s Silence

Andrea Robin Skinner , daughter of the late Nobel Prize–winning author Alice Munro , revealed that her stepfather, Gerald Fremlin, sexually assaulted her as a 9-year-old, and that her mother knew about the abuse and chose to stay with him, in an essay for the Toronto Star published Sunday.

The news comes weeks after Munro’s death on May 13, following a flood of remembrances and praise for her incisive prose. Skinner, her two older sisters, and her stepbrother revealed the family secret that has been swept aside and concealed from the public during a nearly 50-year timeline of confessions, threats, estrangements, and trauma. Fremlin sexually assaulted Skinner in 1976, and Skinner told her mother in 1992, after which Munro remained married to Fremlin until his death in 2013.

In 2005, Skinner reported the past abuse to police, using Fremlin’s own threatening letters as evidence. Fremlin pleaded guilty on arraignment without trial to “indecently assaulting” Skinner. Fremlin, then 80, was sentenced to two years of probation, she wrote.

Alice Munro divorced her first husband and Skinner’s father, Jim Munro, in 1972, and Alice married Fremlin in 1976. She lived with Fremlin in Clinton, Ontario, where Skinner would spend summers, living in Victoria, BC with her father during the school year.

It was that first summer of 1976, Skinner wrote, on a night her mother was away, that Fremlin climbed into her bed and touched her and himself while she pretended to sleep. Other times, he’d make inappropriate comments to her, talk to her about his and her mother’s sexual activities, and ask her about her own.

Skinner said she told her stepbrother Andrew about the assault, as well as inappropriate comments and questions from Fremlin, when she returned to the Victoria home they shared with her father, “trying to make a joke of it.”

“He didn’t laugh,” she wrote. “He said I should tell his mother right away. I did, and she told my father, who decided to say nothing to my mother.” Her father never spoke directly to Skinner about it, and he told her two older sisters to not say anything to their mother either. Her older sister Sheila Munro said that she was sent along with Skinner to make sure she wasn’t left alone with Fremlin.

“I don’t remember the exact conversation, but my father told me that Andrea had been molested, or something to that effect,” Sheila said. “There wasn’t a lot of detail about what happened to her.”

Still, on those summer visits, Fremlin would make inappropriate comments and sexual advances. He didn’t touch her again, Skinner said, but he would expose himself when they were alone and sometimes masturbated.

“I thought I was doing a good job of preventing abuse by averting my eyes and ignoring his stories,” she wrote.

Through the years, Skinner suffered debilitating migraines—the first of which struck her the morning after Fremlin’s sexual assault, the one he said her mother couldn’t find out about because “it would kill her,” she wrote—and grappled with bulimia. When she told her mother she was struggling at the University of Toronto, Skinner said that Munro cried and told Skinner she was wasting her life. Finally, in 1992, a 25-year-old Skinner decided to tell her mother, in the form of a letter, what had happened all those years ago.

Initially, upon learning of the assault, Munro left Fremlin, fleeing to a condo in Comox, BC. In her wake, Fremlin found the letter. When Skinner spoke to her mother, she wrote, it seemed that Munro was “overwhelmed by her sense of injury to herself.”

“When I tried to tell her how her husband’s abuse had hurt me, she was incredulous,” Skinner wrote. “‘But you were such a happy child,’ she said.”

One of Skinner’s sisters, Jenny Munro, called the immediate aftermath “chaos and mayhem and hysterical actions all around…But the focus was not on Andrea.”

Instead, there was concern that Fremlin would follow through on threats to kill himself. Then, he sent a series of letters that described the abuse and directly compared Skinner to Vladimir Nabokov’s titular Lolita. He felt “dishonorable and deeply disgusted with myself,” he wrote, but not for assaulting his stepdaughter, which he detailed in the letter, but “for having been unfaithful to Alice after I had committed myself to her,” he wrote. He called Skinner a “home wrecker” and threatened to kill her if the police were contacted. Munro, too, was devastated, but according to Skinner, more focused on her own pain than her daughter’s.

“She reacted exactly as I had feared she would, as if she had learned of an infidelity,” Skinner wrote.

After a few months, Fremlin came to visit Munro, and when he returned to Clinton, Munro went with him.

“She said that she had been ‘told too late,’” Skinner wrote of Munro. “She loved [Fremlin] too much, and that our misogynistic culture was to blame if I expected her to deny her own needs, sacrifice for her children, and make up for the failings of men. She was adamant that whatever had happened was between me and my stepfather. It had nothing to do with her.”

The family continued to have a relationship with Munro and Fremlin, sidestepping the subject at least partly due to Munro’s public profile and what Jenny called “the fame factor. That was a big deal.”

In Skinner’s words, “We all went back to acting as if nothing had happened. It was what we did.”

In 1994, Munro granted a lengthy interview to The Paris Review for the publication’s “The Art of Fiction” series. She admitted to worrying about her children and acknowledged that she’d prioritized writing over motherhood.

“Some part of me was absent for those children, and children detect things like that." she said. "Not that I neglected them, but I wasn’t wholly absorbed. When my oldest daughter was about two, she’d come to where I was sitting at the typewriter, and I would bat her away with one hand and type with the other. I’ve told her that. This was bad because it made her the adversary to what was most important to me. I feel I’ve done everything backwards: this totally driven writer at the time when the kids were little and desperately needed me. And now, when they don’t need me at all, I love them so much. I moon around the house and think, There used to be a lot more family dinners.”

In 2002, however, something changed: Skinner became pregnant with twins, and told her mother that her stepfather could never be allowed to be around the children. A screaming match ensued, with Munro saying it would be “inconvenient,” since Munro didn’t drive. The next day, Munro called Skinner, she said, “to forgive me for talking to her like that ... and I realized that I was dealing with someone who had no clue who needed to be forgiven. And that was the end of our relationship.”

An October 2004 New York Times Magazine profile of Munro , in which she spoke glowingly and frequently of Fremlin, agreeing he was the love of her life, and described herself as having “no moral scruples,” admitted ambivalence as a parent, and said that she was close with her three daughters (including Skinner, no mention of their estrangement) who got together “mostly to discuss me,” was the next catalyst for Skinner: She reported Fremlin’s abuse to the Ontario Provincial Police and gave them the letters he had sent as supporting evidence. In March 2005, he pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault and received a suspended sentence, and was ordered away from parks, playgrounds, and all contact with Skinner, as well as being ordered to submit a DNA sample for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s database.

Skinner remained estranged from Munro and the rest of her family of origin after the conviction, she wrote. In Munro’s sphere, despite Skinner’s hope that “this story, my story, [would] become part of the stories people tell about my mother,” the conviction didn’t make its way into the media or public eye, and the family danced around the topic.

“The family went back to socializing with the pedophile,” Jenny said. “My mother went on a book tour.”

Fremlin died in 2013, the same year Munro was selected for the Nobel Prize for literature. She was unable to travel to accept the award.

Skinner never reconciled with her mother.

“I made no demands on myself to mend things, or forgive her. I grieved the loss of her, and that was an important part of my healing,” she wrote.

By coming forward with her reality, Skinner is working toward the same goal she stated about reporting Fremlin’s abuse to the authorities in the first place: “I also wanted this story, my story, to become part of the stories people tell about my mother. I never wanted to see another interview, biography, or event that didn’t wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me, and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with, and protect, my abuser.”

Now, after Munro’s death, Skinner and her siblings have reconciled. Her children worry about the impact that this will have on her legacy, but the need to air the truth is greater. “I still feel she’s such a great writer—she deserved the Nobel,” Sheila Munro, that eldest daughter whom Munro recalled shooing away from her typewriter, said. “She devoted her life to it, and she manifested this amazing talent and imagination. And that’s all, really, she wanted to do in her life. Get those stories down and get them out.”

Which is also what Skinner wants to achieve now.

“I want so much for my personal story to focus on patterns of silencing, the tendency to do that in families and societies,” she said. “I just really hope that this story isn’t about celebrities behaving badly ... I hope that ... even if someone goes to this story for the entertainment value, they come away with something that applies to their own family.”

When Should You Capitalize Dad, Mom, And Other Family Titles?

It’s natural to want to give family members all the honors—after all, in our lives, they are some of the most important people. But are their titles capitalized? Is it proper to address mom as Mom or refer to your favorite aunt as Aunt Viv ?

✏️ Should family member titles be capitalized?

Family member titles are capitalized when used as a title immediately before a person’s name ( I adore Aunt Lisa ) or when the title is used in place of their name ( Where’s the milk, Mom? ). Do not capitalize names that refer to common nouns: Those two men are fathers or This class is for expectant mothers .

When to capitalize family member titles

You should capitalize family member titles when addressing your own relatives: hello, Mother . A good rule to follow is to capitalize them if they are used as proper nouns , as in the previous example. The word Mother  is a proper noun standing in for the mother’s name.

Even if a title isn’t being used to directly address someone, it is always acting as a proper noun—and should be capitalized—if it replaces a person’s name. For example, the word Dad is capitalized in the sentence I went fishing with Dad this morning even though the speaker is not talking directly to their dad. You can easily see that Dad is a proper noun if you switch in a name, as in I went fishing with Brian this morning .

Family member titles are also capitalized when used immediately  before a family member’s name: I invited Uncle Chet to the baseball game . In this case, this is not a direct address.  Instead, the title is being used as a proper noun similar to other respectful titles such as Miss, Doctor, Captain, or Professor.

Examples of capitalized family member titles

• Hey, Mom , where’s the remote control?
• Dad , I’m going to the store now.
• Grandma , are you joining us for dinner tonight?
• Grandad drove Audrey to the airport.
• I lived with Ma and Pa on the farm.
• Daniel will finally meet Uncle Maurice at the family reunion.

When not to capitalize family member titles

If used as common nouns , don’t capitalize, as in: We honor all mothers in May . In other words, capitalize words such as Mother , Father , Grandmother , Grandfather , Son , Daughter , and Sis when they are used in place of the person’s name. But there is one exception: they are not capitalized when they follow possessive pronouns such as  her, his, my, our, your .

Whether or not a noun is a common or proper noun often depends on how the sentence is written. Make sure you know how a noun is specifically being used in a sentence so that you’ll know whether to capitalize the family member title or not. For example:

Common noun: I went to the mall with my cousin , Jenny. Proper noun: I went to the mall with Cousin Jenny .

Examples of family member titles not capitalized

• Margo and her mom are going to the museum .
• My brother is visiting from Chicago until Sunday.
• Several fathers volunteered to help clean up the playground.
• The children interviewed their grandparents for a class assignment.

So go ahead and capitalize the names of those important family members in your life, but remember not to capitalize when using a possessive pronoun  or talking about family in general .

Father or Mother, who is more important? The debate regarding the importance of fathers and mothers in the family or society is one that can not be settled by taking a particular stand. Even till today, many people argue that mother/father is generally more important than the other, but a critical look at their arguments will show that their assertion is based on personal experiences.

Nevertheless, in this article, I will take my time to explain this debate topic. I will also make a final conclusion regarding the topic, father or mother, who is more important in the family. I highly recommend that you pay attention to the words used in this article so that you will be able to grasp everything contained here. Now here we go!

Imagine that both your Mom and Dad are in near-death situations, who will you save first? Say your Mom is drowning and at the same time your dad is about to fall off a cliff. What will guide your choice of who to rescue?

One might pick the Mom over the Dad and vice versa but that only depends on the circumstances and peculiarities surrounding each case scenario. You’ll agree with me that parents are an indispensable part of any individuals life and contribute imersely to an individual’s overall personality, perception and to a large extent decisions in life.

However,there are people who grew up having just one parent in their life example, a single Mom or Dad was all they ever got to know and live with. Where as, another percentage (most time referred to as orphans) had only guardians and others just themselves to look out for them. This is sad but a reality. Nonetheless, our focus is on parents, the roles they play , who is most preferred, more important and the reason(s) for this/these prefence.

Who Are Your Parents?

The term parent, in this article, encompasses other sub terms i.e, mother and father. A parent is one who cares for, protects and nourishes a child. The health, safety and total  well being of the child is the responsibility of the former.

The society in fact expects parents to raise their children to become better adults and good citizens instigating positive changes in their present environment which hopefully would extend  beyond their present dispensation for the purpose of making the world a better place.

Four (4) Important Roles of Fathers and Mothers in the Family

1.They provide food, shelter and clothing: This is true for both fathers and mothers. In an African setting, it is typical for one to assert that it is the duty of the father to provide money for food and clothing whereas the mother is expected to prepare the meal or buy the clothes.

The man again is seen as the figure that is saddled with the duty of providing a roof over the heads of his family. But this is not true in other parts of the world and even in Africa there are exceptions to this notion.

2. Education and vocational training: One may safely postulate that education is the most common (and in most instances) the only legacy that parents bequeath their children.

Parents (even those not educated) strive to ensure that their children get a very good education and for whatever it’s worth they strive to ensure that in the absence of the former, the child should at least learn a trade or skill. The goal generally is to secure a good and indeed bright future , a level of independence at the long run for the child with a mindset that when they’re frail and old that such child can take proper care of them (i.e, reciprocate their kindness).

3. Guidance and counseling: Parents are the first contact a child makes with the society and world at large. The society automatically expects that the parents should teach the children behaviors that are acceptable in the society and by extention how to relate properly with everyone; elders, age mates, younger ones, same and opposite sex alike and parents in turn are fully aware and carryout this duty to the best of their ability.

Parents also help their children make certain important decisions in life, example they help the child discover their interest/passion and improve it, they guide them in making career choices e.t.c.

4. They provide love and security: Parents nurture their children with love and ensure their safety both within and outside their home for example they try to know and provide what their children like,  where they are, whom they’re with, what they’re doing, whether or not it is safe for them and so on.

Why People Prefer Their Mothers to Fathers

A local research shows that 8% of every 10% of children would easily pick their Mom over their Dad, the reason for this is quite simple, mothers have a way of living in the moment with their kids hence becoming a part of their day to day activities and lives in general.

This is in apposition to fathers who are so engrossed in their daily struggles and desire to make ends meet as the expense of a beautiful relationship with their children. The children in response to this perpetual absence cultivate and indeed become acquainted with an insane level of distance from their fathers all be it unintentionally (by default).

However, it is pertinent to state that the opposite might infact be the position in scenerios covered by the remaining 2%. Suffice to say that, this is not an attempt to render the roles or importance of fathers inexistent or negligible.

Mother or Father, Who Is More Important In The Family?

Fathers and Mothers are equally important in the family. There’s no gain saying that the role of former preceeds or overrides the latter. Nonetheless, both of them are of essence in every individual’s life and the absence of one whether or not expressly stated by the child in question actually has an effect on the child on the long run, perhaps not financially but emotionally.

The child always feels that there’s something missing and of course such child is right. Again, in the case of orphans this assertion is more clearly potrayed as they’re often conscious of the absence of their parents and this absence to a large extent has a negative effect on their overall life ,behavior and sadly defines/ limits in most cases their level of success and achievement in life.

Parents generally are equally important in every individual’s life though they might contribute in different ways to the well being and development of a child. Individual contribution is nonetheless desirable and essential and should not be neglected. Ask single parents who double both functions and they would confess to you that a little (or maybe tiny) but of them actually crave help from their partners in raising their kids.

The Kidnapping I Can’t Escape

On Nov. 12, 1974, my father’s childhood friend Jack Teich was kidnapped out of his driveway in the nicest part of the nicest part of Long Island. He was arriving home from work at Acme Steel Partition and Door, the steel-fabrication company that his family owned in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It was 6:40 p.m., and it was raining. He pulled up to the house and killed the engine of his Lincoln coupe but saw that the white exterior of the garage door still glowed even though he had turned his high beams off. He twisted around in the driver’s seat and saw another car in the driveway, its headlights blinding him.

“Excuse me,” a man called. He was now outside the car, but Jack could see him only in silhouette because of how bright the headlights were. “You know how to get to Northern Boulevard?”

Jack stepped out of his car. He was surprised. His street was so far off the commuter path that it would be hard to get lost and end up there looking for Northern Boulevard. In fact, when Jack saw headlights in his rearview mirror as he approached the house that night, he thought how strange and rare it was to be on that same road with anyone.

“Excuse me?” Jack asked.

But now the man was approaching. As he grew closer, Jack saw that he was wearing a ski mask and holding a long-barrel silver pistol. That’s when he also saw a second man, taller, this one holding a shotgun and also wearing a ski mask.

“You’re coming with us,” the first man said. “Get over here or we’re going to blow your head off!”

Jack froze for a moment. He considered running behind the house, into the thicket of trees there, but he thought about his wife, Janet, and his two small sons, 6-year-old Marc and 2-year-old Michael, who were in the house right then, how running might put them in danger.
