The end of conference championship weekend sparks a new question for fans in the college football world: Who will win the Heisman Trophy for the 2023 season?

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels is the current favorite to come away with the trophy after throwing 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season, earning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors from numerous voting bodies, including the USA TODAY Network , the Associated Press and the conference itself . He has also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given annually to the nation's top upperclassman quarterback.

However, three other finalists have put up strong cases to be considered for the Heisman Trophy as well.

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr . led his Huskies to an undefeated season and the No. 2 seed for the College Football Playoff. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix threw 40 touchdowns and three interceptions and earned the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year award. Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. grabbed 15 touchdowns and swung the momentum of several games into the Buckeyes' favor from the receiver position.

The Heisman Trophy ceremony will return to the Lincoln Center in New York City for the third straight year. The ceremony has bounced around different locations in New York since its inception in 1935. The lone exception was 2020, a COVID-stricken year that forced the ceremony to be broadcasted from ESPN Headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, with all finalists tuning in virtually.

The four Heisman Trophy finalists will will receive invitations to New York City for the Heisman Trophy Weekend, where the player with the highest point total in the voting will be presented with the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Here is a list of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy:

A total of 928 voters helped decide the 2023 Heisman Trophy recipient. The voters are broken down as such:

870 media votes (145 each in six different regions, including Far West, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, South and Southwest)

57 former Heisman Trophy winners

One national fan vote

Each of the voters votes for their top three preferred Heisman Trophy winners, with a first-place vote worth three point; a second-place vote worth two point; and a third-place vote worth one point. The player with the most points at the end of the voting is declared the winner.

When is Heisman Trophy Ceremony Tonight?: Start time, TV channel, odds, finalists for 2023 award presentation

The wait is over. The 89th Heisman Trophy Ceremony is finally here. ESPN's Chris Fowler will host the show. This will be ESPN's 30th year hosting the ceremony. Fowler will be joined by reporters Marty Smith and Holly Rowe, along with former Heisman winners Tim Tebow, Andre Ware, Desmond Howard, and Robert Griffin III.

The four finalists, Jayden Daniels (LSU), Bo Nix (Oregon), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington), and Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio), will be in the spotlight tonight. Moreover, voting has already been concluded as the players eagerly hold their breaths.

This is the third consecutive year that the ceremony is being held in The Appel Room. The Greek amphitheater, with a backdrop of Manhattan and Central Park, offers the audience a great view and ambiance.

Who is the Heisman Trophy favorite in 2023?

All four finalists have played their hearts out for their respective teams this season. However, LSU QB Jayden Daniels leads the race as the favorite. The signal-caller has thrown for 3,812 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, and three interceptions this year.

Interestingly, not only did he impress everyone with his passing, he was one of the best runners on the team. Jayden recorded 1,134 rushing yards for 135 carries and ten touchdowns. He is ranked No.1 in ESPN's quarterback rating with a 95.7 score. And despite his team not making the playoffs, Daniels has been named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and was awarded the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm honor.

Moreover, he was declared AP College Football Player of the Year on Dec.7, which made his case stronger as the favorite. FanDuel sportsbook also has Daniels as the favorite for the Heisman Trophy at -1500.

Based on odds, Michael Penix Jr. is the second favorite at +1200, followed by Bo Nix at +2500.

How to watch the Heisman Ceremony

The University of Georgia has been home to some historic names in college football over the past 20 years. Names such as Matthew Stafford, Nick Chubb, AJ Green, Todd Gurley, and numerous others have been at the forefront of college football and have won a plethora of accolades over the years. However, despite the revolving door of elite talent. It has been nearly 40 years since Georgia has had a Heisman Trophy winner. 

Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV will look to end the drought this Saturday night. Bennett was named a finalist for the trophy on Monday night along with quarterbacks Max Dugan, CJ Stroud, and Caleb Williams. He is the first finalist for the Bulldogs since running back Garrison Hearst earned the honors in 1992.

Should Bennett win the award, he will become the 1st Bulldog to win since Herschel Walker in 1982. He will also become the first former walk-on to win the award since quarterback Baker Mayfield did in 2017 with the Oklahoma Sooners.

While Vegas odds currently have Bennett as a heavy underdog to take the hardware home. The Bulldog faithful have still been in full support of their National Championship quarterback since he landed in New York earlier this afternoon.

Heisman Trophy ceremony 2022: Caleb Williams leads finalists, live stream, watch online, TV channel

The heisman trophy will be awarded on saturday night with four finalists in attendance.

On Saturday night, college football's best and brightest converge on New York City as the winner of the 2022 Heisman Trophy will be revealed. Four finalists earned invitations to the prestigious ceremony: USC quarterback Caleb Williams , TCU quarterback Max Duggan , Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV and Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud . 

Unless Bennett takes home the top honor, the Heisman winner will be a player who lost his last game heading into the ceremony. The last recipient to do that was Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, who compiled some of the most insane video game numbers of all time. This group is different, however, and features players whose teams went a combined 47-4 in the 2022 season. 

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young took home the award in 2021, and this year's winner will mark the sixth quarterback to take home college football's highest honor in the last seven years. The 2022 Heisman Trophy ceremony will begin at 8 p.m. ET and air on ESPN. It can also be streamed live on  fuboTV  (Try for free). 

Odds for Heisman Trophy candidates are not presently available from Caesars Sportsbook, likely due to Williams being such a large favorite. However, you can see results from our Heisman straw poll here . 

Caleb Williams, QB, USC: Williams took over as the overwhelming favorite before conference championship weekend. Despite losing to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game to miss out on a College Football Playoff spot, Williams' case remains strong. The sophomore threw for more than 4,000 yards and posted 47 touchdowns to statistically stand above the rest of the field. He led game-winning drives against Oregon State and UCLA before capping off the regular season with a four-touchdown performance against Notre Dame . The Utah loss throws the slightest shred of doubt into Williams' candidacy, but he is the overwhelming favorite. 

Max Duggan, QB, TCU:  Duggan wasn't even the starter at the beginning of the season, but snatched the spotlight once he got his shot. The senior posted career-best numbers with 3,321 yards passing, 404 yards rushing and 36 touchdowns. However, the moment that really clinched his candidacy was an unbelievable game-tying drive against Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship Game to send it to overtime. Duggan put his body on the line and won the hearts of college football fans with his exhausting effort. The quarterback fell quite literally six inches shy of the goal line on what could have been a championship-sealing run -- if he trips a second later, this might be Duggan's trophy. Regardless, he has a real shot. 

Stetson Bennett IV, QB, Georgia: After acting as a game manager during Georgia's 2021 national championship run, Bennett became a serious offensive weapon for the No. 1 Bulldogs in 2022. The former walk-on threw for 3,425 yards and added seven rushing touchdowns to his 20 passing touchdowns. More importantly, the senior is the face of the best team in the country after leading Georgia to its first SEC championship since 2017 and a 27-1 record over the past two seasons. 

C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State: Stroud is the most efficient passer in the nation who stars for one of the best offenses in the country. The Buckeyes rank No. 2 nationally in yards per play and scoring offense, while Stroud tied for the lead in passing touchdowns (37). However, his candidacy fell apart after throwing a pair of interceptions during a disappointing performance against No. 2 Michigan . Ohio State is still 22-3 with Stroud as starting quarterback, and he has thrown for nearly 7,800 yards and 81 touchdowns in his career.

The Heisman Trophy ceremony in 2021 will return to its in-person format for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Heisman Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding player in college football, is not lacking in intrigue this year. It was considered a wide-open race for much of the 2021 season, with several quarterbacks leading the way in terms of pure offensive volume. Other positions weren't nearly as represented, but players such as Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III and Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr. garnered significant discussion as well.

That intrigue has transformed into controversy with the announcement of the Heisman Trophy finalists. Despite featuring four players for the third time in as many years, college football fans bemoaned what they believed to be snubs of players such as Walker and Anderson, among others. That takes nothing away from the four finalists in 2021, however; all had spectacular seasons while leading each of their teams to at least 10 wins apiece.

With that, here's everything you need to know about the 2021 Heisman ceremony, including time, TV channel and betting odds.

The Heisman Trophy ceremony takes place on Saturday, Dec. 11, returning to its traditional host city of New York.

The Heisman finalists were announced on Monday, Dec. 6. They comprise Alabama quarterback Bryce Young; Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson; Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett; and Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud. ESPN will reveal the players who finished fifth through 10th in the Heisman voting in a televised event at 9 p.m. ET. They will not attend the 2021 Heisman Trophy ceremony.

Where is the Heisman Trophy ceremony held?

The Heisman ceremony will be held at the Lincoln Center in New York. The 2020 presentation was produced virtually out of Bristol, Conn. due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, it was held, in person, at the PlayStation Theater in New York's Times Square from 2005-19.

How does the Heisman voting process work?

The Heisman winner is selected by 870 media members from across the country: 145 voters in six separate regions (Far West, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, South and Southwest). Each region constitutes 16.67 percent of the total Heisman vote.

Each voter selects three finalists in order of preference: A first-place vote is worth three points; a second-place vote is worth two; and a third-place vote is worth one. Each of the previous 57 Heisman Trophy winners get a vote apiece, as does the college football fandom at large. Once the deadline for voting has passed, points are tabulated to determine the winner.

This year's ballots were distributed to voters on Nov. 29, two days following the completion of Rivalry Week. That means voters were allowed to select their preferred players before conference championship weekend, which took place on Saturday, Dec. 4. The deadline to submit votes was 5 p.m. ET on Monday, Dec. 6. Only one finalist, Stroud, did not participate in a conference championship game.

The 2023 Heisman Trophy will be awarded at a ceremony in New York City on Saturday night. And one of LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix or Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. will head home with the sport's most prestigious honor .

Daniels is the betting favorite to be named college football's most outstanding player after a stellar second season with the Tigers. The senior quarterback tied with Nix for the most passing touchdowns in the nation (40) and ranked third in passing yards (3,812) -- all while boasting a 72.2 completion percentage and throwing just four picks. And Daniels also rushed for 1,134 yards, which were the most of any quarterback, and 10 scores as No. 13 LSU went 9-3.

Penix, meanwhile, made a compelling Heisman case by helping No. 3 Washington become the first Pac-12 team ever to enter bowl season at a perfect 13-0 mark. The senior signal-caller led the nation in passing yards (4,218) and was tied for third in touchdown passes (33) while sporting a 65.9 completion percentage and throwing nine picks.

Nix was the Heisman betting favorite before the Ducks fell to Washington in the thrilling (and likely final) Pac-12 Championship Game. The senior Ducks quarterback led the nation in completion percentage (77.2), was tied with Daniels for the most touchdown passes (40) and ranked second behind Penix in passing yards (4,145). And he was only picked off just three times. Nix and the No. 8 Ducks lost two games, both of which were to Penix and the Huskies.

Finally, Harrison is looking to become just the fifth wide receiver to earn the Heisman Trophy. The junior wideout recorded 67 receptions for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns with the No. 7 Buckeyes. Harrison ranked ninth in the nation in receiving yards and was tied for second in touchdown catches.

The Heisman Trophy presentation is set for Saturday, Dec. 9. The presentation will be live streamed on fuboTV (free trial) , SlingTV (half off first month) and DirecTV Stream (free trial) .

LSU’s Jayden Daniels, Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., transfer quarterbacks who have all played at least five college seasons, and Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. were announced as the Heisman Trophy finalists.

The Heisman has been given to the nation’s most outstanding college football player since 1935. This year’s winner will be announced Saturday in New York. The top four vote-getters determined by more than 870 voters, which include members of the media and former Heisman winners, are selected as finalists.

With Nix and Penix, the Pac-12 has two Heisman finalists for the first time since 2010 when Stanford’s Andrew Luck was the runner-up to Auburn’s Cam Newton, and Oregon running back LaMichael James finished third in the balloting.

The Pac-12 is in its final season with its current membership before 10 schools depart, including Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten.

When is the Heisman Trophy presentation?

The Heisman Trophy presentation will air Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. (8 p.m. ET).

The Heisman Trophy will be handed out for the 89th time on Saturday night at Lincoln Center in New York City. After Caleb Williams failed to become the second player ever to win college football 's most prestigious individual award as the USC quarterback didn't even crack the Top 10 in voting, another player will have his name put into immortality in the sport.

It was a Heisman Trophy race for the ages in the 2023 season with several quarterbacks making their case time and again throughout the season. But we also had several skill position players try to insert their names into the conversation along the way.

Now, the dust has all settled, though, and we're ready to crown a new Heisman Trophy winner who will hoist the award alongside some of the best players in college football history.

What do fans need to know to catch the Heisman Trophy Ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 9? We've got you covered with all of the information you need, starting with when the award winner will be announced.

What time will the Heisman Trophy winner be announced?

The Heisman Trophy Ceremony broadcast will begin at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Dec. 9. However, you'll have to wait a bit before the actual Heisman winner is announced. The broadcast is an hour-long affair that will highlight the remarkable seasons and feature interviews with each of the four finalists, and will then conclude with the winner being announced. As such, the Heisman winner will be announced at approximately 8:50 p.m. ET, but to be safe fans should tune in around 8:45 p.m. ET so to not miss it.

Daniels enters the Heisman ceremony as the heavy favorite after Nix fell short against Washington for the second time this season in the Pac-12 Championship Game. However, this was a tight three-player race up until the end of the season between the three quarterbacks. Still, anyone other than the LSU quarterback winning the award on Saturday night would come as a massive shock to the college football world.

Heisman Watch 2024: Top Heisman Trophy candidates in 2024

1. jalen milroe, quarterback, alabama crimson tide (+1400).

• Jalen Milroe stats ( ESPN ): 2,834 pass yards, 80.5 QBR, 23-6 TD-INT, 65.8% completion, 12 rush TDs

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe made himself a Heisman Trophy candidate at the end of the 2023 season with his play down the stretch. From November-December, he posted a 10-1 TD-INT ratio, rushing for over 300 yards with seven rushing touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback rushed for 100-plus yards twice in November and recorded signature wins over Tennessee, LSU and Georgia.

We also have every reason to believe in Milroe being maximized by Kalen DeBoer. There are things to work on, as evidenced by the 5 fumbles in his last two games, but Milroe’s dual-threat ability can be the centerpiece of DeBoer’s offense. With an even better supporting cast in 2024, Milroe can become the latest Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

2. Dillon Gabriel, quartebrack, Oregon Ducks (+700)

• Dillon Gabriel stats ( ESPN ): 3,660 pass yards, 87.3 QBR, 30-6 TD-INT, 69.3% completion, 12 rush TDs

It’s almost unfair the amount of talent Dillon Gabriel gets to work with in the Oregon Ducks offense. With that said, we’re also believers that he can be an even better quarterback than Bo Nix. One of our Heisman Trophy candidates early last season with the Oklahoma Sooners, Gabriel finished with seven 300-yard performances. He also delivered 100 rushing yards in a Red River Rivalry win over Texas. We know the passing and rushing stats will be there for Gabriel. If Oregon lives up to its potential, the signature wins will be there. At the very least, Gabriel should be one of the finalists at the Heisman Trophy presentation this winter.

2. Quinn Ewers, quarterback, Texas Longhorns (+1000)

• Quinn Ewers stats ( ESPN ): 3,479 pass yards, 78.3 QBR, 22-6 TD-INT, 69% completion, 5 rush TDs

Injuries are the one thing that has really prevented Quinn Ewers from generating more buzz for the Heisman Trophy. However, he was one of the most effective quarterbacks in college football in 2023 with a 70.7 percent completion rate, 162.6 QB rating, 9 yards per attempt average and 26 touchdowns. Ewers also delivered in signature victories over Alabama and Oklahoma State. There’s also the whole boost that comes from being the Longhorns’ quarterback when Texas is a national championship contender. Plenty will need to go right for Ewers in 2024, but he’s one of the leading Heisman Trophy candidates this fall.

4. Carson Beck, quarterback, Georgia Bulldogs (+750)

• Carson Beck stats ( ESPN ): 3,941 pass yards, 86.0 QBR, 24-6 TD-INT, 72.4% completion, 4 rush TDs

The starting quarterback for the best team in college football immediately holds a chance of winning the Heisman Trophy. What separates Carson Beck from someone like, Stetson Bennett, is that Beck can put even more of the offense on his shoulders and there’s more upside for this passing attack because of his talent. Beck completed 72.4 percent of his passes and accounted for 26 total touchdowns. He also delivered in big games against Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri. Beck will need to elevate his game in 2024, showing more consistent accuracy and making some bigger plays downfield, but the tools are there. So, while he is fourth on our Heisman Watch right now, Beck could easily be No. 1 in the Heisman Trophy rankings in mid-September.

4. Jaxson Dart, quarteback, Ole Miss Rebels (+1400)

• Jaxson Dart stats ( ESPN ): 3,364 pass yards, 78.5 QBR, 23-5 TD-INT, 65.1% completion, 8 rush TDs

The Ole Miss Rebels aren’t just running it back in 2024, Lane Kiffin is bringing in quality defensive talent via the transfer portal. Kiffin’s scheme and the returns of wide receiver Tre Harris along with tight end Caden Pireskorn mean the Rebels’ offense should be firing on all cylinders in 2024. All Ole Miss needs is Jaxson Dart to return and elevate his game. We’ve seen plenty of breakout seasons from quarterbacks before and if Dart can take that next step, pushing Ole Miss up another level, he can be in the Heisman Watch. Frankly, the Rebels’ high placement in the top 25 rankings for Week 1 makes Dart’s path even clearer to competing for the Heisman this season.

6. Nico Iamaleava, quarterback, Tennessee Volunteers (+1400)

• Nico Imalaeava stats ( ESPN ): 314 passing yards, 79.3 QBR, 62.2% completion rate, 7.0 yards per attempt, 2-0 TD-INT, 71 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns

After taking five candidates with some of the highest Heisman odds in 2024, we reserve the sixth spot in our Heisman Trophy rankings for a wild card pick. Nico Imalaeava looked sharp in his first start, coming against the Iowa Hawkeyes defense in the Citrus Bowl. While he only threw 1 touchdown with 151 passing yards, he also scored 3 rushing touchdowns and the Volunteers won 35-0. Our confidence in Iamaleava is partially tied to that. It also has to do with what Josh Heupel’s offense does for quarterbacks, as evidenced by Hendon Hooker’s breakout season. Iamaleava is more talented than Hooker and he can help make this one of the best offenses in college football. At that point, it just comes down to how many games the Vols’ defense lets them win.

• Michael Penix Jr stats 2023: 83.3 QBR, 4,218 pass yards, 33-9 TD-INT, 65.9% completion, 3 rush TDs

Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is our 2023 Heisman Trophy winner. He doesn’t have the stats to rival Jayden Daniels or Bo Nix, but there’s another compelling argument for Penix. He never lost.

Washington was nearly a double-digit underdog in the Pac-12 Championship Game against Nix and Penix Jr. came out on top. He wasn’t perfect, with interceptions once again proving to be an issue for him. However, he delivered his best performance since October on the biggest stage. He found ways to win even in games when he threw an interception, unlike Daniels, and he beat Nix head-to-head twice. Plus, Penix Jr. played through injuries. That’s why he finishes the season atop our Heisman Trophy race.

2. Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU Tigers – 2023 Heisman Trophy winner

• Jayden Daniels stats 2023: 95.6 QBR, 3,812 pass yards, 40-4 TD-INT, 72.2% completion, 1,134 rush yards, 10 rush TDs

LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels had one of the best single-season performances ever. He shattered FBS single-game records, put his name in LSU’s record books and posted video-game numbers that made him the most exciting player to watch in college football. It will likely be several years before we see a quarterback have a season like this one. However, LSU still lost three games this season and Daniels had a 3-2 TD-INT line in two of those losses, with LSU losing by multiple scores.

Daniels is going to be the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner. Statistically, he delivered one of the best seasons in college football history and LSU is probably a five-win team without him. We have no issue with the Heisman voters who cast their ballot for Daniels, his numbers were deserving. However, in our evaluation process, Penix Jr. earned the award and finished atop our Heisman Watch after an undefeated season and Pac-12 title.

3. Bo Nix, QB, Oregon Ducks

• Bo Nix stats 2023: 90.9 QBR, 4,145 pass yards, 40-3 TD-INT, 77.2% completion, 6 rush TDs

If stats are all that determine the Heisman Watch leader, the award goes to Jayden Daniels. If it’s determined by the best player on one of the undefeated teams, then it goes to Penix Jr. That’s precisely why Nix is the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

Nix, who set the FBS record for most career starts as a quarterback, was excellent in the Pac-12 title game. He threw three-plus touchdown passes for the eighth time this season and set a season-high in rushing yards (69). The Ducks’ senior quarterback put 31 points on the board against Washington’s defense and finished the year with over 4,300 yards of offense with 46 total touchdowns. However, two losses to Penix Jr. put Nix in second.

4. Jalen Milroe, QB, Alabama Crimson Tide

• Jalen Milroe stats 2023: 84.5 QBR, 2,520 pass yards, 21-6 TD-INT, 66.4% completion, 12 rush TDs

In the first two months of the season, Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe had just 142 rushing yards with a 13-5 TD-INT ratio. Something changed at halftime against the Tennessee Volunteers. Milroe finished November with a 187.9 QB rating, rushing for 297 yards with another 909 through the air. He completed 69.4 percent of his passes, accounted for 15 total touchdowns and delivered his biggest play in the closing seconds of the Iron Bowl. It’s not enough to win the Heisman Trophy, but Milroe was one of the best players in college football in the second half of the season.

5. Marvin Harrison Jr, WR, Ohio State Buckeyes

• Marvin Harrison Jr stats 2023: 67 receptions, 1,211 receiving yards, 26 rushing yards, 15 total touchdowns

Marvin Harrison Jr. did. everything a wide receiver can do to beat the best defense in the nation. He found the end zone against a Michigans secondary that previously allowed just 1 receiving touchdown in the red zone this season. He also was the only Ohio State player who gave fans hope on the attempt at a game-winning drive. With the loss, the best thing for Harrison Jr. is to sit out Ohio State’s bowl game. If this is the end for him, he had a phenomenal career.

6. Jordan Travis, QB, Florida State Seminoles

• Jordan Travis stats 2023: 2,755 passing yards, 20-2 TD-INT, 8.4 yards per attempt, 64% completion rate, 176 rush yards, 7 TDs

Devastating. That’s the only word to describe the Jordan Travis injury. For the Florida State Seminoles, it erases any shot of the team competing for a national championship and potentially could keep them out of the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, just like with Hendon Hooker in 2022, the injury will take a few secondary Heisman Trophy votes for Travis. The senior quarterback finished his collegiate career with a phenomenal senior campaign, knocking out LSU in a thrilling season-opener, ending Florida State’s winning streak at Clemson and he won 10 consecutive games as one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation. Travis won’t even be a Heisman Trophy finalist, but he’s at least earned this recognition.

Jayden daniels wins 2023 heisman trophy.

The 2023 Heisman Trophy ceremony was awarded to Jayden Daniels on December 9, 2023. The LSU quarterback became the third LSU player to win the award and the first since Joe Burrow took home the award in 2019. 

Last season,  Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams took home the award , with Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and TCU quarterback Max Duggan the other finalists. A year prior, Alabama QB Bryce Young won  with 2,311 points. A Q&A With Heisman Trustee Jim Corcoran, Including Thoughts On Reggie Bush’s Return

Heisman Trustee Jim Corcoran joined the Official Heisman Trophy Podcast in this week’s first episode of the season and discussed a handful of topics, chiefly the reinstatement of USC’s 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush.

Below is a transcript of the interview. It has been edited for clarity.

Host Chris Huston : It’s been a very eventful summer for the Heisman Trust. Of course the biggest news has been the reinstatement of 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush. This was obviously something that has sort of been an asterisk for a few years.  We’re curious, what was your thought process? What was the Trust’s thought process?

Jim Corcoran : We’ve been closely monitoring all of the enormous changes that have been taking place in college football. The landscape has changed, including the Supreme Court decision in 2021, which questioned the legality of amateurism, as you know, and it has opened the door to a totally new world, whether it’s name, image, and likeness or the recent proposal to remove the cap on education-related payments. So just the total landscape, Chris, has changed. And the Trust thought it was time to get together and make a change.  

CH : How do you guys decide on something like that? Is it a voting process? Do you guys get together in a locked room and sweat it out until you come up with an answer?  

JC : It’s a vote by the Trustees. You know, there really wasn’t any question now. It’s been a long time coming. We all got together and we just thought it was time. We thought Reggie had paid his dues. And more importantly, the landscape has changed. I think that’s why you saw a good reception to the announcement of giving Reggie back his trophy.

So many people, when they talk about college football and they talk 2005, they definitely know who the best player was and we just thought it was time and the right thing to do to give Reggie’s trophy back.   

CH : Who made the call to Reggie and give him the news?  

JC : Our president, Mike Comerford, reached out to Reggie’s team to let them know.  

Reggie had not only a great college career, but he had a great pro career. He has his own foundation that still does a lot of great things to help others. I think it’ll be a great opportunity for people to learn a lot more about Reggie Bush and what he’s all about. We look forward to having him back on the dais with the greatest fraternity in the world, the Heisman Trophy winners.

CH : You guys all got together down in Florida when this announcement was made and you all sort of had a little powwow. Some of the winners were there. What were the emotions in the room like among the different various winners.

JC : You’d have loved it. We had maybe 15 former winners there and Mike Comerford got up there and made a speech to welcome him back. There were tears shed and there were hugs and so many people happy to have him back. It was exciting. He was very emotional.  

CH : Does Reggie plan on coming out to the ceremony this year and taking part in the fun things like the Nissan Heisman House?  

JC : I believe he is. I don’t think the world necessarily knows it out there, but you know, the Heisman presentation that happens on TV, when the winner gets the award on Saturday night, we end up throwing a black tie dinner the next night. I think we’re moving it to a brunch this year, moving it up because of the expanded college football playoffs. There’s probably going to be a number of contenders that are going to have to get back to their teams right away.

But the rest of the world should know that they can come to this event and when they do, you just buy a ticket and it works as a charitable donation because we’re a 501c3. The people that get to come to the dinner not only get a bird’s eye view, they can get pictures taken with winners and can get autographs and what not. We have 25 to 28 Heisman Trophy winners that are up on the dais.

CH : You know, one of the things I really loved about the decision to bring Reggie back into the fold was because the Heisman is the institution in college football that has probably changed the least over the years. It’s maybe the only institution left in the sport that is not going through catastrophic change at the moment. There’s also this reputation, fairly or not, for, for moving with deliberation and due process.   

And I think that the Heisman Trust showed some great true colors in this regard by showing it could be flexible, showing it could change, showing it’s not necessarily invested in being stuck.

JC : As a trust, we are very confident that reinstating the trophy to Reggie is the right thing to do.  And it is not going to diminish the value of the trophy or its well -earned reputation for integrity.  

CH : I just want to talk about the Heisman Weekend real quick. It looks like this year, with all the changes in college football, the ceremony, the weekend surrounding it, it’s going to be a little different. Like you mentioned, potentially going to a Heisman brunch on the Sunday after the ceremony.  Going into the future, do you see this year as kind of a little bit of a testing ground to see what works and then tweak it again going forward and maybe build some new traditions?

JC : Yeah, that’s a really good question Chris. We’ve been tweaking it a little bit over the last 20 years. You know, it started off as a four-day event. We have had private dinners for just the former winners and the contenders. Saturday we’ve had the telecast and then Sunday, a big dinner. We feel that that’s a great time of year, after the season ends and   before the bowl games. But you have got to keep tweaking it.

CH : I love the fact that the Heisman is still a regular season award and if I had my druthers, the Heisman would remain that. So we keep that one tradition because one good thing about keeping it a regular season award is that everyone plays the regular season.

JC : Not everyone plays in a playoff. Chris, you are a hundred percent on it. I mean, if you, were talking to somebody from one of the top four schools, they would say, well, wait a minute, look what he did in the final game.

CH : But that’s the great thing about college football is that the whole premise of the college football is to be able to argue about this.  

CH : Let’s close it out by telling us a little bit about what the Heisman Trust does.   

JC : I love when you ask me that question. You know, as I said earlier, we are a charitable organization. And our mission is to grow the legacy and preserve the integrity of the Heisman Memorial Trophy.  

Our goal is to harness the power of the Heisman Trophy’s legacy of athletic excellence to positively impact our nation’s youth and provide more equitable opportunities for underserved communities. I’m on the Charitable Giving Committee . We give away somewhere in the vicinity of 3-to-5 million dollars a year.

It’s been going up every year. You can go on our website, heisman.com , and you can see all the charities we give to. We also support the Heisman Trophy winners’ and their charities. We also, every year, give out the Heisman Humanitarian Award to someone who meets the mission of what we’re doing and has done really good things in their lives.

Who wins the Heisman Trophy? Can a veteran QB or 1st-year starter break through the transfer trend?

The Heisman Trophy race appears wide open this season.

The top five players in last year’s Heisman voting, won by LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, and eight of the top 10 are currently in NFL training camps.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is the only player among 2023’s top-10 vote-getters to appear on a long list of players with Heisman odds by Bet MGM.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Georgia’s Carson Beck lead that list. Gabriel would add a new twist to the recent trend of transfer quarterbacks winning the Heisman (five of the last seven): After stints at Oklahoma and UCF, he would be the first two-time transfer to win the award.

Beck would be a true anomaly for this current era of college football if he wins the Heisman: A fifth-year senior who has never switched schools.

There is also a group of former five-star, first-year starting quarterbacks in Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava, Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold and Kansas State’s Avery Johnson who could vault to the top of the class the way Alabama’s Bryce Young did in 2021.

There is an entire season ahead but some predictions on how the awards season might go:

Heisman Trophy (most outstanding player)

Finalists: Carson Beck, QB, Georgia; Jaxson Dart, QB, Mississippi; Will Howard, QB, Ohio State; Avery Johnson, QB, Kansas State.

And the winner is ... Johnson. The expanded 12-team playoff should open the door to even more players being labeled Heisman contenders late in the season. Will SEC and Big Ten players get an extra boost by schedules that have potential to create even more big-stage games? If so, it will be even harder for players such as Johnson to break through, but his upside is massive and blonde flowing hair makes him hard to miss.

Chuck Bednarik Award (defensive player of the year)

Finalists: Rueben Bain, DE, Miami; Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State; James Pearce, DE, Tennessee.

And the winner is ... Bain. The second-year pass rusher cojures up memories of Jadeveon Clowney at South Carolina and has the tools to be the first player selected in the 2026 NFL draft.

Outland Trophy (best interior lineman)

Finalists: Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas; Will Campbell, OT, LSU; Mason Graham, DT, Michigan.

And the winner is ... Campbell, who then goes on to become the first offensive tackle selected in the draft.

Doak Walker Award (best running back)

Finalists: Ashton Jeanty, Boise State; Ollie Gordon II, Oklahoma State; Jaydn Ott, California.

And the winner is ... Jeanty, who becomes the first Doak winner to come from outside a power conference since BYU’s Luke Staley in 2001.

Biletnikoff Award (best receiver)

Finalists: Luther Burden III, Missouri; Jayden Higgins, Iowa State; Tetairoa McMillan, Arizona.

And the winner is ... Burden, who has said he wants to win the Heisman but will have to settle for this.

Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back)

Finalists: Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State; Will Johnson, CB, Michigan; Benjamin Morrison, CB, Notre Dame.

And the winner is ... Downs, the Alabama transfer who stands out on a loaded Buckeyes’ defense.

Extra points

Butkus Award (best linebacker): Barrett Carter, Clemson.

Mackey Award (best tight end): Luke Lachey, Iowa.

Groza Award (best kicker): Bert Auburn, Texas.

Ray Guy (best punter): Alex Mastromanno, Florida State.

Madden 25 review: this is the best madden game in a while, but it still feels incomplete, share this article.

After having had College Football 25 take over my life for the last few weeks, I decided to give Madden a shot. I’ve been a sporadic Madden player over the years but figured I’d give it another shot since we finally got another college football video game , and it was awesome.

After playing it for four days straight, my feelings are mixed.

Don’t get it twisted — this isn’t a bad game! Anyone who has been a fan of Madden will love this one. There were plenty of redeemable qualities that kept me coming back.

The first thing that you should know about it is that this is  not  a copy-and-paste job with CFB 25. The two games are entirely different. Madden actually does a lot of things better than CFB 25, if I’m being honest.

The first thing I did was go into a Play Now game. I chose to replay the Eagles’ first preseason game against the Ravens.

Big mistake, guys. That defense is excellent. It destroyed me. But, honestly, I was in awe at how alive it felt. The defense kept shifting around pre-snap. It was like the players were communicating with one another. It felt like watching an honest NFL game, which was nice.

The playbooks were also unique. The Eagles offense was fun. It was filled with a ton of run-pass option plays with intricate route concepts for Jalen Hurts to cycle through. It was impressive.

What I really wanted to play was the game’s Superstar mode. I’d been glued to Road to Glory on CFB 25 since the game came out and wanted to continue my player’s career on Madden.

Things started off pretty well! My player transferred over neatly. He looked exactly like he did on CFB 25, which was nice.

Once your player loads in, you select an archetype. Since this was a quarterback, I had four choices: field general, scrambler, improviser and power runner. Ultimately, I built a custom improviser mix.

From there, you play the NFL Combine and do various drills to improve your player. There’s also a Combine interview you can take that impacts your draft standing, too.

The questions are super silly and easy if you pay attention to Madden and the NFL in the slightest bit.  The questions aren’t about defensive coverages and how to attack them. Instead, they’re silly things like who won Kick Tac Toe at the Pro Bowl in 2023.

Pretty sure I still got this wrong, but whatever.

Ultimately, the Jets drafted me with the 11th pick in the first round. They do the whole draft thing, too, by the way. Robert Saleh called me to let me know the Jets were picking me. You also get to shake hands with Roger Goodell, which was nice.

But things got super weird, super fast. For some reason, New York traded Aaron Rodgers to the Rams after picking me, and, well, that didn’t make any sense mostly because my player kind of stinks.

This is what really irked me. You’d think that as a Heisman-winning quarterback who broke virtually every passing record at USC, I’d have been a pretty good prospect. But nope! He’s a 65 overall quarterback.

It felt like the work I did on CFB 25 kind of didn’t matter, which sucked. But the mode was still fun to play. I played the preseason and, after a few quick games, he’s already a 70 overall. It’s not hard to level up. You get skill points upon completion of “quests,” which are basically stat goals for the season. The progression system is also much better than CFB 25’s. It’s more granular, so you can improve individual “core” skills instead of broadly improving a swath of them without control.

The mode was a bit glitchy. I had to restart the game a few times to get some of the menus to work. It also just completely kicked me in the middle of a fourth quarter, which was irritating, but I still had fun with it.

The presentation was excellent. The commentators knew I won the Heisman, which was nice. They also gave me a sweet chyron, too.

I haven’t had much time to explore the rest of the game, but these two modes gave me a pretty good sampling on what to expect.

Ultimately, this game is good. If you like Madden or love football, you’ll have a good time playing it. It’s an immersive NFL experience that breathes a lot of life into the experience.

Me, personally? I think I’m going to slide back to CFB 25 for a sec. I miss those drums.

Not this year, Kap

If Colin Kaepernick does choose to come back to the NFL as a coach , it won’t be happening this year.

Harbaugh reportedly told Kap he had a coaching job waiting for him with the Chargers if he wanted it. The head coach reportedly offered Kaepernick that job back in January.

Now, it seems, it’s a bit too late to take it. Harbaugh told reporters that Kaepernick wouldn’t be coaching on the staff or playing on the team this year.

“I love Colin, but he’s not going to be on the coaching staff I set for this year, and he’s not going to be playing on the roster either,” he said.

That’s a reasonable position for Harbaugh, considering that the NFL season starts in a couple of weeks here. It’s a bit late to be adding names to the coaching staff.

It also seems he’s closing the window on Kaepernick playing for him, too, which is a bit disappointing. I guess Easton Stick is good enough? Whatever.

Maybe next year. We’ll see.

And, while that’s really dope, it’s probably the last thing she wants to hear following a loss. That’s something she’s said before — for example, after she broke the rookie double-double record — and it certainly wasn’t going to change on a night where the team mostly struggled without Chennedy Carter. As you might suspect, Angel rattled off an icy but blunt “I don’t wanna hear about no record” response to a reporter who asked.”

Record, schmecord. Angel is trying to make the playoffs.

Our Favorite Features in EA Sports College Football 25

It’s been a long decade, but the day is finally upon us: EA Sports College Football 25 is here, marking a triumphant return for gaming’s greatest college football franchise after 10 years away. By all accounts, College Football 25 isn’t just the best version of the game we’ve ever seen, but one of the best sports games ever . A big reason for that is the fact that the game has been overhauled from top to bottom, both by building on the lessons EA Sports learned from many years developing its storied Madden NFL franchise and by introducing brand-new elements never seen before in football games.

From its polished presentation to its dynamic gameplay mechanics, College Football 25 has a lot going for it, but let’s take a closer look at some of our favorite features.

The Game Day Atmosphere

There are few things in the world of sports more electric than game day at a college football stadium. The crowd is brimming with energy, the players are fired up, and the stadium is quite literally shaking. College Football 25 absolutely nails this in every way, to the point that it feels nearly identical to watching a game on television. This is, hands down, the best presentation I’ve ever seen in a sports game.

Homefield Advantage

While homefield advantage is present in nearly every sport, it’s different in college football. Homefield advantage has been proven to provide a significant impact in determining the outcome of a college football game, but that sort of thing can be a bit nebulous to capture in a game. That’s not the case here, as intense moments for the visiting team will see the crowd noise ratcheting up to ear-splitting levels, the screen shaking, and plays even displaying incorrectly. 

Confidence and Composure

This is a new system introduced with College Football 25 and it beautifully captures the way that experience can make all the difference when players have to maintain their composure in high pressure situations. Not only will players get hot or cold depending on the outcome of previous plays (which will in turn affect how they perform in future plays), but their experience will dictate those ups and downs. Freshmen are much more likely to be affected by those ups and downs, while upperclassmen will be more likely to keep their cool and perform in the clutch.

Long-time video game football fans are likely well-versed in things like player ratings, which provide numerical equivalents to players’ strengths and weaknesses. In College Football 25, players will also have mental and physical abilities that will give them advantages in certain situations. For example, a running back with the Downhill ability is more likely to break tackles after hitting max speed, while quarterbacks with the Field General ability can do things like identifying blitzers before the snap. There are 80 abilities in total, with each of them having four different tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum) depending on the player’s rating in a given category.

The Switch Stick

In most football games, it can be challenging to switch to a different player while you’re in coverage on defense. Cycling through players via button presses can be a challenge and there are inevitably times when you end up controlling a linebacker when you’d rather by a cornerback. Now, a simple flick of the right stick in the direction of the player you want will switch you to him, allowing you to quickly and easily manage multiple levels of coverage. Once the quarterback throws the ball, the right stick control will immediately switch back to the Hit Stick we all know and love.

The New Read-Option Mechanic

The Option is a much bigger element of college offenses than it is in the professional game, so the developers at EA Sports completely overhauled this system to feel more intuitive. In addition to a new pull/keep mechanic during the handoff (depending on the read), the quarterback can dictate how powerful the pitch to the running back will be, as well as whether or not to abandon the run entirely and keep it for a quick pass to an open receiver.

Road to the College Football Playoff Mode

Without a doubt, the biggest change to the college football landscape over the last ten years is the College Football Playoff, which kicked off in 2014 just as this series was taking its break. In this mode, you’ll take your team of choice through a number of divisions by earning ranked points as you try to work your way up the rankings. There are a couple of neat twists here, including the fact that it’s a head-to-head mode against other players and that you’ll earn more points by using teams that aren’t as highly ranked.

Road to Glory Mode

While not new to College Football 25 , Road to Glory is still one of the franchise’s best modes. You’ll play through an entire college career, from recruitment through the bowl game (hopefully!) in your senior year. Like any student-athlete, you’ll need to manage your class and practice schedule (including keeping that GPA up!) while earning the trust of your coach and teammates both on and off the field. As is the case with the real world college football landscape, this year features the transfer portal, which will give you an option to switch schools if you don’t feel like you’re getting the opportunities you deserve… or if you just think you look better in another team’s uniform.

Ultimate Team

Yes, there is a version of EA Sports’ Ultimate Team mode in College Football 25 and it’s a blast for anyone who loves the storied history of college football or enjoys the ins-and-outs of team building. Complete specific challenges, earn coins, then spend those coins to improve your team, whether that’s with current college players or legendary players from some of college football’s greatest teams.

The developers at EA Sports said from the beginning of the game’s development that their goal was for EA Sports College Football 25 to feel like a love letter to college football and it’s clear that they’ve succeeded. Want to see for yourself? Hit the gridiron now on Xbox Series X|S!
