An Unforgettable Trip Essay

My most unforgettable Trip occurred about 3 years ago during the summer vacation, when I and my sister were embarking on our journey to Spain due to relocation. The day of the trip I laid in bed thinking about the friends of mine whom I was going to leave behind. Thoughts kept coming in. A night before we planned the journey from a city in Nigeria to the capital to catch the plane the next day. We didn’t book to take a van.

So thought of waking earlier to get to the station were they hire cars and taxis for travelling because we could drive down due to the far distance. So the day came when we had to travel and got to the station as planned.

When we arrived at the hire station we seemed to have some problems with our luggage because they were too much for a car our taxi so we had to book for a van to be able to take our luggage.

We waited for a long period of time to find the perfect car that would fit our luggage but they seemed to too small or parked up. My aunty who was going to accompanied me and my sister to the airport got so angry because she tend to get very hot tempered because we didn’t have a very long period of time to waste before our plane could take off because the journey from were we where to the airport was about 3 hours long.

And we had to be their before 7pm. It was about 12pm we hungry so we went for food everyone looking frustrated at the time hoping we leave soon. We where about to leave to another hire company when they assigned us to the perfect van that could take us to the place and fit our entire luggage. Before leaving we had to pray, and I felt very bad because I was going to a different country and was going to miss all my friends and family. I was not comfortable and I cried and wished I never moved. I then got used to the fact that I could come and visit them often and call them.

So we took some pictures and we where very happy. The journey was almost perfect but they rain started and it was extremely heavy the drivers driving couldn’t see as far due to the rain and that caused a huge traffic jam. I was sitting close to the window with my can of coke and eating my lunch which I had purchased earlier on from the shop. My aunty and my sister fell asleep. During that time I was bored and thinking about other things that were bothering me. My eyes moved into seeing the hill at were in font of us.

A bus suddenly came into the picture and which was very close to us. Every car speeding by passing, no limit what so ever. At my side I could say lakes which were very deep inside: I wondered to myself ‘what if something someone fell in side it’ Then suddenly the bus that was in front of our van suddenly stopped, due to the rain and the speed those cars where taking no one could see what was going to happen and, ‘Boom’ we smashed into each other. Our car tumbled and we were in luck that the car didn’t stumble into the lake.

People came across to help us get out of the car because we where stocked and the driver was half dead. We struggled to get out of the car and our entire luggage went lost. Everything was very strange; I had never had that kind of experience before. It was like watching a horror movie. Some people who also participated in the accident started crying, looking for their children, tears beginning to increase, and my leg was deeply injured, my aunty was seeking some help, and my sister was full of injury.

It almost seemed that the strategy was never going to end. It felt that I was dreaming and was confused. I was losing a lot of blood and then the emergency aid came and took me and some other people to the hospital where we where treated. We had to pay for some fees but someone came to our aid and did the payments. That was miraculous because we didn’t have any money on our hands. We finally got to where we where headed to. And rested but didn’t miss our flight. We were happy that we made it through because someone could have lost their life.

Every trip is an adventure and gives us joy. Going out on vacation may not mean a trip. A trip with adventures is completely different. Sometimes the vacation trip also becomes adventurous. Lots of things happen that amaze us. Also in adventures, many dangers take place.

I remember such an adventure I had. It was a horseback ride in the mountains. I was very young when we visited Shimla. We went to the Rohtang Pass. It snowed heavily that day. There was snow all around. So we had to take horses. We climbed high up the mountain. It was so lovely to see nature. I loved it. I remember my horseback ride till now.

I still remember one thrilling adventurous trip I had. I got scared when it happened. But I also enjoyed it a lot. I was very young when I visited Shimla. I did not know that the adventure would happen. So I just went on a vacation. We had a wonderful train journey to Shimla. Reaching there, we decided to visit Rohtang Pass.

I was so excited! We took a car and went to the slopes. I looked out of the windows. The car was gradually rising to the top. The road was spiel, like a big snake. Soon we reached the hilltop. I jumped out. That day it snowed. So it was all white. I was so happy to see the scene. Then we took a horse to ride. That was the greatest adventure I ever had. It slowly walked up the mountain.

I looked at the sides and saw how deep it was. I felt scared. Suddenly I could not breathe anymore. I felt sick and almost fell off the horseback. My father immediately held me and we came down the slopes. I fainted due to no air. When I got well, the people served me hot soup. He said I was too little. So I easily caught a cold. I still remember how dangerous it was. But still, this adventure is a great memory.

Adventure and trip are closely connected to each other. It is really hard to avoid adventure from a trip. We often go on vacations. But these are only for fun. So a trip with adventure is different. Adventure makes us a different person. We become strong and brave in an adventure. It is very important to have it in our lives. An adventure is always exciting and amazing.

I was also lucky to have an adventure in my life. I was very little then and did not know about it.  It suddenly happened. We went to Shimla that year. Shimla is always a great place to have fun. And it was the best vacation of my life. My father got us the tickets and we packed our bags. We took the train and went straight from Kolkata to Shimla. I enjoyed the view outside. It was wonderful. When we reached there, I jumped in joy. After two days of reaching Manali, All of us decided to visit it.

We planned to go to Rohtang Pass first. We started our journey. A car was booked. We took it and went to Rohtang. The road was like a snake. It was the first adventure I had there. It went slowly to the hilltop. I felt the cool breeze and looked out. It was so pretty. When we reached the top, I jumped out. It snowed that day. I started playing with it. 

But the biggest adventure came after this. We had to take horses to go to the hilltop. I have seen horses in books. But had never ridden them. I clapped my hands in joy. My father and I got onto one. It slowly started moving. I touched the soft mane of the horse and it neighed. Soon we were at the top of the mountain. I looked down and got scared. It was dark. Long waterfalls were falling from the top. I stared at it. Suddenly I could not breathe. I tried hard but failed.

I soon fainted and was about to fall off horseback. But my father immediately caught me and we came down. The people nearby helped me and I opened my eyes. I had turned blue for no air. The people gave me hot soup to drink and feel warm. Gradually I felt better. After this, we left for our hotels. That day I was scared, but today I feel it as my best adventure. I will never forget this wonderful trip.

Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

“The most memorable trip I have ever had was when I was 17 traveling to Vietnam alone. I was living and working in Vietnam for 4 months as a bartender (and ended up meeting my amazing girlfriend there too!). The most emotional part of the trip was when I was leaving back to Australia to visit my Grandmother who had been very sick. I felt like I lost everything (and even being able to see the person who I had come to love). I worked hard for 6 months and was able to find my way back here.  3 years later I live in this beautiful country and able to speak the native language while living with my girlfriend.”   – Lachlan Gordon

“My most Memorable travel memory was from a Christmas I spent in China. I was able to travel to a leper colony in one of the very rural areas outside of Guangzhou. There was one lady in particular who has rocked my world even to this day. After learning that they only have to eat what they can grow and the large bags of rice my friends and I brought them, she offered me and every person I was with this bowl of oranges. She had nothing by our standards – but was still willing to give all that she had. It’s moments like this that keep me hungry for travel.” – Arden Shanklin

“My sister and I went on a Contiki to Scotland and Ireland. There was one night in Loch Ness when it was raining cats and dogs, so we were forced to stay at our hotel. Everyone was bummed at first, but then we didn’t really care, because we were cooped up in a hotel with some pretty awesome people. We sat and played card games and drinking games all night. It was probably one of the most fun nights in the whole trip!” – Kandyce Lauren

The Crazy Adventure Of Travelling With Friends

WHAT A RIOT!

Travelling with friends is a whole different dynamic than travelling with family or with a partner.

It seemed unavoidable that our trip turns was going to be filled with a  series of mishaps, complications, and unending laughter.

     It is a crazy adventure and one that I have not experienced in a while.

The last time I went on a trip with friends was in May 2011….come October 2015, here we are, six friends heading out to Barcelona for a destination birthday. Four of us flew from Vienna, two from London.

The plan was to meet at Barcelona El Prat Airport, then head over to our Air BnB Apartment. Needless to say, our plans didn’t turn out to be so simple. 

I left my darling hubby and little one and embarked on my two-hour flight from Vienna with two of my besties, and headed off to Barcelona. The flight was great. We talked for the duration of the flight even though it was 06:30 am and we said all we were going to do was sleep on the flight.

Arrival in Barcelona would bring on the adventure! We couldn’t find the rest of our “crew” at the El-Prat Airport. After almost two hours of searching, looking, turning on roaming, sending text messages, Whatsapp, Facebook messages in order to find each other, we finally made our way to the apartment. Got there at 11:30/12:00, our check-in was at 15:00, but at this point nothing could faze us.

           We were hungry and ready for TAPAS TAPAS TAPAS! 

It was 25 degrees (centigrade) outside, sunny, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me. I had hardly slept for three days before this trip, wondering if I was doing the right thing for leaving my baby at home for TWO NIGHTS!!!  I know it seems like a short time, but for a new mum, and likely all mums, the first time away from your child, no matter their age it was going to be tough!

So grateful for a supporting hubby who knew I needed a break. OK – back to the story.

We had lunch at Trobador  at Rambla Catalunya. For me, t he food was a 6 on a scale of 1-10.

It is at times hard to figure out how much food will actually be served on the Tapas plate. Having been to Barcelona before, I knew that at times all you get are little finger bites, other times it is a plate large enough food to fill you for a few hours!

Walked around, took pictures of some of the sights along the way, went back to our apartment and relaxed. Stopped briefly for our group selfie.

That night, after a few more miscommunication, false directions from the receptionist, and a crazy walk and taxi ride, we had dinner at Boca Chica , in the heart of Barcelona’s Eixample.

The website does not do the restaurant justice for its’ grandness, but definitely worth going to if you are ever in Barcelona.    Make reservations as you won’t be seated without.

This restaurant was a recommendation of a friend of a friend. The restaurant is very…..antique, unusual, and the bathroom is the best place in the establishment. Sounds crazy, but it is the truth!

I LOVED the tapas, however the main course was very mediocre. In my opinion…..overpriced, but worth it for the ambiance!

Boca Chica has four floors, we ended up missing out on a floor because the place is so big. We had drinks after dinner in the Lounge, which we confused for the Bar. Too many cocktails maybe – it did turn out to be the better choice though.

Did I mention that one of us set the menu on fire with the candle placed on the table? OH GOSH!

Beautiful Barcelona At Night

Our last  day in Barcelona was spent sightseeing on the Hop On Hop Off bus, which was a great way to see the main sights of the city. There are two routes, East and West, so depending on what you want to see, you make your choice.

We chose the East Route which takes you to the Gothic Quarter, the Aquarium, the seafront, Agbar Tower, the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell.

Of course, you cannot visit Barcelona without seeing the Sagrada Familia !

Although the final stages of construction are still underway, the beauty of this building is beyond fascinating, over 100 years since its foundation stone was laid and 90 years after its designer, Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi died. 

We also visited the Park Güell which is absolutely gorgeous if you visit on a day with great weather and sunshine. Greeted by the Gaudí dragon fountain at the entrance, you can take a beautiful walk through the park with stunning gardens and amazing scenery.

We met this guy on the way up – he insisted on a kiss – this is a close as he got.

Did you notice that he is just sitting there in the air?

Once you get to the top the park, you find a terraced area with a wonderful view of Barcelona City.

We had a great day out, went on a quick shopping spree then headed back to our apartment.

Dinner was more relaxed as we were all exhausted. I decided on taking an early flight home on Sunday, I missed my boys too much. So first thing in the morning I headed back to Vienna, while the others stayed on for a last full day in Barca, before heading home on evening flights.

They had a blast at the beach – and I got to come home to hug and kiss my boys again.

I love Barcelona! The vibe and the city’s architecture are incredible. And with friends even better and more fun!

Traveling with friends can surely make or break the relationship. Stressful times can be difficult but so worth it to experience the world together!

This sounds like so much fun! I don’t have a kid of my own but I left my husband behind as I went to Tulum last year with my friends. I love him and the experience would have been wonderful with him there but there’s something special about sharing experiences with your friends. I’ve never been to Barcelona but I’ve always wanted to go!

Traveling with friends is a very memorable moment. Sagrada Familia is love. I’d love to visit this one too with hubby. I think traveling with friends is a lot of fun as long as you have common goals. I’ve just started my fourth year of nomadic life. In the past three years, I’ve been to 25 countries (if not for the pandemic, it would have been at least 10 more!) and had some of the most wonderful experiences of my entire life. Here are a few of my favorite experiences in some of the countries I’ve had the privilege to visit:

1. Seeing My First Leopard In South Africa

I was deeply moved by the visceral connection I felt with the land and the people while in South Africa. However, I didn’t expect to become obsessed with seeing a leopard before I left. I went out on several safaris, including Chobe and Etosha national parks, where I missed out on seeing a leopard the first time and was robbed of seeing leopards the second time. Thus began my obsession.

It wasn’t until I got to Kruger National Park that I finally saw one. In fact, I saw five. The first was a mother and cub, but it was dark so impossible to take good photos. The next day, we stopped for one by the side of the road, stalking an impala. Its perfect, sinewy muscles quivered in anticipation, and I felt like I saw the most beautiful animal I had ever encountered. Lean, the perfect killing machine, and yet also stunningly beautiful. Eventually, she walked with a swift, confident gait, and disappeared into the tall, dry grass. I will never forget that leopard.

2. Drinking Yerba Mate And Malbec In Argentina

Last year was my first in Argentina, and it became one of my favorite places in the world. Drinking yerba mate was an experience of sharing culture, intellectual conversation, and making new friends. In Bariloche, I took a class and learned the proper way to prepare it, and that there are many different brands and flavors. I shared many cups with strangers and learned about their lives, and even developed lasting friendships. In my opinion, you cannot truly understand the culture of Argentina without trying at least one cup of this drink, which boosts many healing properties as well!

Before heading to Argentina, I was an avid fan of malbec wine. But there’s no comparison to drinking it in Mendoza. I went to the Uco Valley, famed for the best malbec wines in the world, and they were all excellent. The experience is divine — you can take a bus, a local train, or a bike, depending which vineyards (called bodegas) you plan to visit. I had a glass most days of the four months I spent in Argentina.

3. Nail Art, Massages, And Learning Motorcycle Culture In Vietnam

Vietnam was a combination of sights, sounds, and smells. Prices were so cheap I simply couldn’t comprehend how I could make it through an entire day spending so little.

One day, a friend treated me to a manicure and pedicure with nail art. I pulled up complex nail art photos on Instagram I liked, thinking they would make a modified version. Instead, my manicurist made a perfect, highly detailed copy of the designs I showed her. In fact, they looked better on my nails than they did on Instagram. The whole process took her two hours, and cost $20 USD. It remains the most incredible manicure and pedicure I’ve ever had.

When I look back at my time in Vietnam, I still can’t believe I managed to cross a street, ever. And yet, somehow, I found the rhythm of the motorbikes and survived. Looking at my photos, I’m amazed that entire families rode their motorbikes together. The motorbike seemed to be a mode of transportation as well as a way families spent time together. One of my favorite photos is of a woman kissing her son as she drives along.

Who doesn’t love a massage? How about a really excellent, hour-long massage for less than $10? I got a few massages a week, they were so good and affordable. My favorite massage parlor was in Hanoi.

4. Eating Honey And Red Kiwifruit, Seeking Greenstone, And Learning About Maori Culture In New Zealand

Now marooned in New Zealand for almost a year, I’ve had a lot of time to get familiar with the culture. I’ve had a few surprising lessons on the food front. Firstly, being raised in America, I thought kiwifruit only existed in green. As it turns out, it comes in gold and red as well. The red is the sweetest, and perhaps one of the best, fruits I’ve ever tasted. It is only available during March and April, so you have to time your visit to New Zealand just right! The other surprise for me was honey. When I’ve gotten it at home, it crystallizes long before I finish a jar. In New Zealand, I’ve learned to use honey almost every day. Whether that be in my tea, on toast, plain, or as a skin remedy, I’ve gone through many jars.

When I first arrived, I noticed all the stores sold jewelry made out of a green stone. I learned it’s called pounamu and is found on the South Island. While, at first, it seemed like a tourist souvenir, it now seems like a rite of passage. I had no idea the greenstone came in so many shapes, colors, hues, and varieties. I’ve already bought two pieces because they represent a deeper connection to the country for me, and my time here, which I will never forget.

I didn’t realize the movie  Moana  was based on this area of the world. Locals I’ve spoken with believe the fictional Polynesian island of Motunui is based on New Zealand, since the story is partly based on Maori legends. Looking at the landscapes, I can certainly believe a demigod pulled mountains out of the sea!

The indigenous people came here via the sea, as Moana’s community did in the film, and their history and culture are fascinating. This is the first country I’ve been to where tattoos signify family and tradition and are specific to the tribe each person descended from. In fact, the Maori tattoo artists have to study the designs of over 100 tribes to do their job properly.

5. Playing With Highland Cows And Getting Heathergems In Scotland

If you’ve read any of my other articles, you may know that I love cows! I have to admit that the Highland cow stole my heart. With a crop of hair over their eyes leaving one to wonder how they see past it, and babies that look like giant blobs of fur, it’s impossible not to fall in love with them.

Scotland is also known for my namesake growing on hills. I’ve seen the Heather plant, but what’s wonderful in Scotland is that a company found a technique to color the roots of the Heather plants and make beautiful jewelry. Heathergems is located in Pitlochry, Scotland, where you can visit the factory store, but their jewelry is available throughout the country. I still treasure the pieces I bought there.

6. Seeing The Moai On Easter Island

Easter Island struck me as one of those places most people see photos of but don’t actually go. It’s a tiny island, a four-hour flight from Santiago, Chile, and seems so remote and impossible to get to from the U.S. that I’m sure I wouldn’t have gone if I didn’t quit my job. On my way to Santiago, I found a round-trip flight on a Dreamliner for less than $300 USD. I snapped it up and had an incredible experience.

The island is expensive and touristy, but no matter, there are layers of intrigue to it. Most people stay only a few days, but I stayed almost a week, giving me more time to see the stone statues, called Moai, and learn about the island’s history and people. Seeing the Moai in person, you really understand how huge they are — and that they weigh a lot. Therein lies the intrigue. They were built long before we had the modern technology to move them (and it’s still not easy, proven by the tsunami that knocked many down in the 1960s). All the statues were built in the one quarry on the island and then moved to their current resting places. But at the time they were built, there were warring tribes inhabiting the island. So not only did the statues get moved, they got transported safely. The mystery will make you believe in aliens.

7. Learning Monks Aren’t That Different Than The Rest Of Us In Cambodia

While in Asia, especially in Cambodia, I developed a minor obsession with the monks. I loved the orange color of the robes most of them wear, and the energy they carry with them as they walk. Even the young boys with shaved heads seem somehow dignified and full of purpose. Their robes provide a beautiful contrast to the aging stone of the temples they live in.

For me, it was the contrast of holy and normal life blending together that really fascinated me. Seeing a monk shop for groceries like any non-holy person was humbling. For a moment, we had something in common. I had some silly idea that monks still led more sequestered lives, so seeing them smoke cigarettes and use smartphones was a real surprise! I enjoyed their presence everywhere I went.

There are so many beautiful experiences to be had in every country. I feel lucky and blessed to have had these, and know many more await me!

Have you seen those friendship breakup TikToks? You know, the ones where a group of girls come to Miami as friends and leave as enemies? Yep, those videos have traumatized me from taking trips with my besties.

Everyone from TikTok to Reddit is trying to crack the code of these friendship breakups. Some point to the different travel preferences—getting to the airport four hours early; rigidly sticking to the itinerary and allowing zero flexibility—while others highlight the lack of conflict resolution skills among peers. I believe it's a mixture of both.

Remember, conflict is a normal and natural part of life. Not knowing how to handle conflict is the problem. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to minimize fallouts or arguments with your friends—and this article has a few of them down below.

Communicate, communicate, communicate! Have conversations before you board the plane. Talk about things like what you’re hoping to get out of the trip, what you do and don't want, and your non-negotiables. It’s best to get everything all out in the open sooner rather than later.

Also, be aware of everyone's habits and preferences. For example, some friends might need alone each day, others might need to rest in bed before dinner. You might have friends who like to sleep in. Take all of this into account when arranging an itinerary, so you can meet everybody’s needs. Ideally, everyone will be involved in the planning—making decisions collectively is important!

And (!!) plan your budget beforehand. People’s financial situations can vary a lot, so important to be on the same page with finances before the trip.

Know who's doing what and why. If you're bad at organizing but your friend swears by their Google calendar, give them the itinerary. Similarly, if your bestie has an eye for photography, they're the designated cameraman. Assign every person the role and responsibility tied to their strength. And make sure things are equal amongst the group, so nobody feels resentful about taking on too much.

These roles don't have to be set in stone—you can decide who takes care of what throughout the trip (or leading up to it). The goal is to keep everyone happy with the tasks they've been delegated.

Among the roles you may allocate each other are:

• Organizer: The person who does the planning (e.g. printing things off, forwarding emails, downloading apps)
• Navigator: The person responsible for directions 
• Photographer: The person behind the camera
• Budget manager: The person who keeps track of the finances

Choosing Activities and Destinations

“Combining different interests and energies of friends may be a little challenging but still can be taken care of with a little planning,” says Niloufar Esmaeilpour, MSc RCC SE, a clinical therapist and the founder of Lotus Therapy . 

Planning ahead is best. But also try to remain flexible when it comes to creating your itinerary. Don't forget that it’s fine if you don’t do everything together as a full group (you're not attached to the hip all the time!). If some of you want to explore while others rest, why should that be a problem?

Esmaeilpour sums it up: “By inviting friends to express their needs and preferences, most people can be accommodated. Remember, the goal is for everyone to have a good time on the trip, so flexibility and understanding are paramount.”

Keeping clear, open communication around everyone's expectations should help to make sure the group dynamic is managed well.

However, it can be good to allow for some spontaneity, too, says Dr. Daniel Glazer , clinical psychologist and the co-founder of UK Therapy Rooms , “Have a loose outline yet build in ample room for detours and improvisations based on surprise local recommendations or hidden gems you organically discover,” he says. “It breeds collaborative problem-solving, agility, and an overall spirit of adventure—widely underrated bonding tools.”

“I would recommend having a plan around what happens if there is a conflict before you go,” says Carolyne Keenan , PsychD. “It’s natural to want to assume that everything will be great and there won't be arguments, but traveling can be intense and at times a bit stressful and that doesn't always bring out the best in us.”

She recommends agreeing on communication rules beforehand. Like if you need space after an argument or how to talk to someone if they're doing something that annoys you. (“I” statements, anyone?)

Keeping things in and not communicating can lead to more explosive arguments further down the line, particularly if people are drinking alcohol or are tired from traveling. “Managing it before it gets to that point by addressing the problem or taking the space you need to work through it will help to resolve it more quickly,” Keenan adds.

There will likely be a disagreement—it’s only natural when you spend a lot of time with the same people. The important thing is that these conflicts are handled properly. Keep an open mind and allow everyone involved to say what they want to say. 

If the conversation seems to be getting heated, it might be a good idea to let it rest, give everyone time to calm down, and then pick it back up later on. “The key is to compromise and find out a middle path where you both feel heard and respected,” explains Esmaeilpour. “There are times in life when agreeing on the point of disagreement is appropriate for peace to prevail.”

“Even the closest of friends need some personal space and time to recharge, especially during a trip,” says Esmaeilpour. She recommends incorporating alone time into the itinerary, noting that “it can be as small as an hour in the morning and one afternoon where people can do their thing.”

By respecting everyone’s needs for personal space, feelings of suffocation can be avoided, which makes all the time you spend together even better! Reiterate to everyone that needing personal space isn’t a reflection on any of the relationships you share; it’s just that some people may need more alone time than others. 

Traveling With Couples

Something else to consider when traveling with a group of friends is whether there are any couples in the mix. You may vacation in a group of three or four couples or have a mix of couples and singles. Maybe there's a person whose partner isn’t coming along. Regardless, couples may want some time to themselves as a two. This shouldn't be a problem as long as it's factored into the trip itinerary, Dr. Kennan notes.

“Couples can have a different way of communicating to groups of friends,” she says. “If a couple has a particularly volatile relationship or they have a tendency to bicker a lot, then that dynamic might not compliment a group trip too well.  Generally, though, I don't think it will automatically cause problems. Keeping clear, open communication around everyone's expectations should help to make sure the group dynamic is managed well.”

Nobody wants to be a downer and talk about how to handle money. But these are conversations that need to be had. Not everyone handles finances the same way—and if you've never traveled with this group of friends before, you might not realize how your budgeting styles differ.

“I know groups who always do a whip when they travel and pool their money so everything comes from one account and makes things easier when paying for a group,” explains Dr. Keenan. If pooling all the money together isn't an option, Dr. Keenan recommends apps like Split Wise that record everything you’ve bought and who’s bought it, so you know who’s spending what. 

Regardless of what you decide, it’s important that everyone can afford the events on the itinerary, plus have a contingency fund, just in case. Taking everyone’s financial situation into account will minimize the chances of some people feeling resentful or awkward that they've underbudgeted and have to bow out of exercursions because they can't afford them.

Whether you're traveling in a group, with family, as a couple, or solo, safety is paramount. 

You can never be a hundred percent safe when traveling, but you can minimize the risks of something going wrong. If somewhere unfamiliar, make sure you stay together with each other—particularly if it’s dark or people in your group have been drinking alcohol or taking recreational substances—and familiarize yourself with common scams in your destination.

How to Be Safe While Traveling

Always have emergency contacts—including your destination's emergency number—and don't forget about travel insurance, either. (Insurance can come in clutch if you can't afford unexpected travel costs like medical emergencies or cancellations from inclement weather). If you're in a non-English speaking country, try to learn some common phrases to make communicating easier.

Traveling with friends can certainly be stressful but it can be so much fun, too. Encourage your friends to enjoy the experience and make some unforgettable memories, even if everyone has to occasionally compromise.

If you’re going somewhere new, immerse yourselves in the local culture and try things you aren’t used to. If things don’t go entirely to plan, don't fret. It’s unlikely to ruin the whole trip. You might just have to change one or two things on the itinerary. It’s best to be flexible and keep an open mind!

Keep In Mind

Put the work in before your trip by planning carefully, and it’ll pay off when you’re actually on vacation. “The friends who thrive together on the road aren't simply the luckiest—they're the ones who put in the work upfront,” says Dr. Glazer. “Long before any backpacks get shouldered or luggage stowed, the stage is set by proactively discussing travel styles, personal boundaries, and a commitment to flexible communication. With that foundational roadmap in place, even the most harrowing relationship detours have guideposts for realignment.”

Not everyone is a good travel buddy. They might not like traveling or they don't enjoy the same types of trips as you. For example, you might have a friend who’s great company on a cruise but hates a vacation that involves a long flight. Or, you and your friend may be more suited to nights out and day trips rather than anything longer—and that’s okay!

EXCLUSIVE: The prestigious Camden International Film Festival has announced a surprise addition to its 2024 lineup: The Shepherd and The Bear , a documentary described as a “modern folk tale.”

The film directed by Max Keegan and produced by Keegan, Elizabeth Woodward, and Emmy winners Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, will serve as the closing night film for CIFF’s 20 th edition. CIFF notes that Keegan moved to France and spent three years there working on his film, “learning French from scratch,” adding, “The production of this immersive vérité project was intensive, both technically and physically… The team lived full time as part of the mountain community for two years during production, filming in some of the most remote and treacherous mountain terrain in France. The film was cut by French editor Sabine Emiliani, known for her work on the Oscar-winning March Of The Penguins . The film is scored by renowned French composer Amine Bouhafa ( Four Daughters ), and performed by the 12 Ensemble, who collaborated with Johnny Greenwood on the Oscar-nominated score for The Power Of The Dog .”

Producers Moss and McBaine ( Boys State , Girls State , The Overnighters ) commented, “We knew we wanted to get involved in this project from the start because this kind of ambitious filmmaking is important and risky. This film was a hugely challenging proposition, particularly for Max, a first-time director, and we were excited to mentor new talent. We are glad we took that risk. It’s a beautiful, bold film which we feel belongs in its own category, ‘mythical realism.’”

The Shepherd and The Bear is directed and written by Max Keegan, and produced by Elizabeth Woodward, Amanda McBaine, Jesse Moss, and Max Keegan. The film is a Salthill Films and WILLA production, in association with Mile End Films, Impact Partners, and Pinky Promise. Executive Producers are Johannes Arver, Jessamine Burgum, Kara Durrett, Lauren Haber, Jenny Raskin, Bill Reedy, Emily Reedy, Robina Riccitiello, Rick Rosenthal, Nancy Stephens, Christine Woodhouse and Andrea Van Beuren. Submarine is handling sales.

CIFF annually welcomes some of the most important nonfiction filmmakers from around the world, as well as nurturing emerging talents through its artists program. “The festival attracts one of the largest industry gatherings of the documentary film community in the U.S.,” CIFF observes. “It is recognized as both an important stop on the beginning of the Oscar campaign trail and as an entry point for international filmmakers to find U.S. audiences, distributors and production relationships.”

This year’s edition of the CIFF includes 31 features, 22 short films, and two immersive experiences originating from 37 countries. Sixty percent of the features in the program are either U.S., North American or world premieres, CIFF notes.
