Television has brought the world of moving and talking images into our drawing rooms. This invention has with a single stroke taken oft half the population of the cities from the roads back into their respective houses. It has also done away with the necessity of creating fresh new means of recreation for the populace by the government and the municipalities. While the first act has to a large extent reduced loafers from the roads, the second consequence has resulted in ill-kept public parks and other family places. One can thus say that Television is both a boon and bane for our society. On one hand, it encourages values of home, while on the other it makes a couch potato of all of us. It opens up new vistas of knowledge for us. It also inculcates in us the values of non-tolerance and violence. As a medium of distance education television has played a pivotal role in educating thousands of children and adults. Unfortunately, as a medium of entertainment, it has impressed upon young minds the need for superficial luxuries. An objective analysis of the qualities of this medium clearly demonstrates that television cannot be categorized as good or bad. It is an inanimate object and therefore will bear the fruits that we want it to bear.

Call it the ‘idiot box’, call it the ‘window to the world’, call it by whatever name, it is an undeniable fact that the television has come to rule the world in a powerful way. The television has developed as a major social force, shaping the growth of children, bringing new exposure to adults, and swaying public opinions.

It is a media serving in a versatile manner: as an advertising medium, an entertainment medium, a public discussion platform, a weather forecast station, a center for cultural arts and music, and as a source of news and education. Various studies have been undertaken to examine the power of television as a social force and they all underline the fact that the television has a major impact on society – sometimes in a positive way and sometimes in a negative way. Thesis Statement: The innumerable benefits wrought by the advent of television far outweigh the negative aspects.

The positive social impacts of television are many. Television is a like a window to the world from each and every home on the planet. It brings in live news and information from around the world and even from outer space and depths of oceans. It highlights social problems to create a public awareness. The programs on starvation in Africa, abuse of Iraqi prisoners and coverage of the Iraq war are recent programs that have helped create global awareness.

Reading about thousands of children starving in Africa or some other country is one thing; actually seeing the misery is quite another. Television news is different from newspaper and print media as it brings in exact color, sound, time sequences and feelings of events. In democracies television is used for election campaigning and also for public discussion of electoral issues thereby allowing people to make informed choices. Through live coverage of certain events, television makes us all eyewitnesses to crucial events around the world.

This promotes formation of individual opinion around the world. Television is often decried as a negative influence on the sexual attitudes and behavior of America’s adolescents. A national sample of adolescents who regularly watched the television program Friends were surveyed about an episode that portrayed a pregnancy resulting from condom failure. Of 506 adolescents (age range, 12-17) who were surveyed, at least 155 had viewed the episode; 65% of viewers remembered the condom failure. Among those who changed their perceptions of condom efficacy as a result of watching, similar proportions came to view condoms as either more or less effective than they had previously believed. Ten percent discussed condom efficacy with adults after watching the show. This study just illustrates the effect that television can have on society as a whole.

But those who argue that television is harmful often cite the finding that television is harmful to children. Studies do show that even children below three can be affected by television. (Singer 40). According to a study in the July issue of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, television viewing before the age of three may have adverse effects on subsequent cognitive development (Singer 40). The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children younger than two and only high quality, age-appropriate viewing thereafter. Moreover, television has been viewed as being used to create a materialistic culture. According to Christen Fitzerald, television has polluted society by introducing “different ways of being, dressing, speaking and acting – vulgar, egalitarian, and immoral”.

However, while it might be true that children below three years must be exposed to indiscriminate television viewing, Frederick J. Zimmerman, Ph.D., and Dimitri A Christakis, M.D., M.P.H., of the University of Washington, Seattle, have found that television viewing between ages three to five years is beneficial in terms of outcomes of reading recognition and short-term memory. They say that parents should learn to manage the context of television viewing to maximize its potential benefit for their children. Marie Winn, author of “The Plug-in: Television, Computers and Family Life” says that children are more affected by the time devoted to television watching than to the actual content of these programs.

Thus time spent on TV watching affects children a lot and its not about the content at all. Educational programming can develop young children’s socialization and learning skills. News, current events and historical programming can help make young people more aware of other cultures and people. Documentaries can help develop critical thinking about society and the world. Moreover, a study titled “Student Achievement in California Schools” it was found that “children of professional and semi-professionals, even those that viewed four or more hours a day, did much better than children of the skilled and unskilled who watched little or no television” (Berger 174).

As for arguments pointed out by Christian Fitzgerald regarding vulgar dressing, speaking and acting, one must remember that culture as a whole is evolving gradually. During this gradual process made things acceptable now that were unacceptable years ago.

Television also provides much needed escape and relaxation to children and adults. Television audiences can become awestruck with the beauty and grace of the arts or get caught up in the frenzy and excitement of an athletic event. Shrum says: “Entertainment provides at least three gratifications according to Berger. These three gratifications are: “a respite from the anxieties and pressures of everyday life; the opportunity to compare oneself with the demeanor, possessions and behavior of others; and a means of keeping up with what is transpiring in the world” (Berger 193). These gratifications have been particularly well documented in the case of television (Berger 193).

According to a research conducted by R. Gorney, D. Love and G. Steele (174), in which they studied the effects of a week’s viewing of five types of television programs, including those with predominantly helpful or hurtful content, on the aggressive mood and hurtful behavior of adult men. Their findings show that there is a “significant decrease in aggressive mood and lower levels of hurtful behavior in viewers of helpful programs”(Gorney, 174-177).

Further, television brings in the latest in ideas and information around the globe in the realms of health, science, and technology. Without advertisements on television, no one would know about new products in the market, the latest offers and jobs. Included in this category are new products and services that will make our life easier or safer, new recipes, important safety procedures, and even instructions on home improvement and repair. In today’s competitive, information-centered world, to stand still is to fall behind.

Further, critics of television generally make the following arguments: television debases the arts and audience tastes, undermines moral standards, encourages escapism, engages in economic exploitation, exhibits a liberal bias, sets up false images of reality and distorts reality through omission. () All these arguments come true depending on certain conditions and it is the responsibility of the television producers and policy makers of television programming to see to it that these accusations do not become the standard.

Although there are many moral issues related to media content, sex and violence create the greatest debates. Many consider casual sex a sin and leading to life-threatening disease and unwanted pregnancies. However, it should be remembered sex education through the media is largely responsible for the two-decade decline in the rate of unwanted pregnancies in the United States. (Davis 1). “Regarding violence on television, U.S. children typically see 16,000 murders on TV by the time they are 18” (Davis 1). Most of these murders appear to be without consequence and most are represented as the ready “solution” to a problem.

The results of one of the most extensive studies ever done on the subject of violence and TV were released in 2003. It has been concluded that those who as children were exposed to violent TV shows were much more likely to later be convicted of crime. (Williams 55) Researchers said that, “Media violence can affect any child from any family,” regardless of social class or parenting. Further, the study exposed that girls who watched a large amount of violence tended to exhibit hysterical behavior with their husbands and boys who grew up watching violence tended to become physically abusive husbands. A summary of much of the research and its consequences can be found in the book Visual Intelligence—Perception, Image, and Manipulation in Visual Communication by Ann Marie Seward Barry.

Thus we can conclude that while television viewing has both beneficial and harmful impacts on society, the benefits of television are overwhelmingly high. In order to maximize the benefits of television, it is necessary that television viewers are given the right to choose what they want to view from a free flow of information, and parental guidance is provided for youngsters in viewing programs that are beneficial to them.

Nobody can deny that the Television (TV) is one of the most wonderful inventions of science. It is rather an improvement over radio broadcasting through which we can only hear the speech and songs, dramas and discussions etc.

In the modern age, television has become indispensable for everyone. None of the houses is complete without a television set as it renders an invaluable service (huge knowledge, entertainment etc) to the society.

Television is a good medium of providing information and knowledge, and make people aware with what is happening around the world. The things which we were not able to see before our eyes can now be seen on the television screen. It is due to the television that the children of today have huge spectrum of knowledge than their counterparts have in the past. Even an uneducated person can learns a lot and gets full knowledge about everything.

Our farmers, villagers, women and even the people who work as labour have been much benefited through the use of television. Their thinking ideologies, standard of living and means have improved a lot. Their visions and outlooks have undergone a great change, and have given a zoom to their way of thinking. In the schools, colleges and other educational institutions, the Television has become very popular as it is a good medium for learning and entertainment, and very helpful for studying many subjects because there are many education channel available for students who teach in live classes. Television also helps to keep boredom away from the students, and educational programs create an entertaining and healthy learning environment.

Television also plays an important role in improving the capability of students who have low I.Q. level because students find the television teaching more effective, interesting and entertaining. Students have been fully motivated by watching educational programs and have started taking interest in the studies.

Nowadays, we are surrounded with the problems of provincialism, communalism, regionalism and terrorism. Here the television is working wonder in educating the common people. It is a very valuable and sound medium of instruction to the general public.

But every rose has thorns because excess of everything is always bad. If it is used extensively, it will bear a direct impact on eyesight, and can cause other health issues. Vulgar visuals and vulgar songs (includes bad or abusive words) have a bad effect on the viewers, particularly on the children and students.

There is nothing wrong with the use of television, but improper or extensive use can put us into difficulties, and can create many problems including health, social as sometimes people become addicted of all this and disconnect with the society i.e. from the outer world. At last, we can say that television (TV) is good for everyone and we should use it for knowledge, entertainment, news etc. We should avoid extensive watching, and shouldn’t be an addicted of it.

Television is one of the greatest inventions of mankind. Since the invention of first ever electronic television in 1927, the television has undergone a number of changes in shape and size as well as in terms of transmission technology and picture quality. Today, the sleek, wall mounted televisions of different sizes are found in billions of houses across the world. They come in different sizes and are also equipped with latest technology, capable of showing hundreds of channels.

The television has gained immense popularity over time and today it is found in almost every household, the world over. Sure, it is good for entertainment purposes and is informative, but it also has its set of disadvantages, which we will discuss further in the essay.

World’s first electronic television was invented in 1927 by a 21 years old inventor – Philo Taylor Farnsworth. He used radio wave technology to remotely transmit images to a device with screen. His technology was way ahead of mechanical TV concept.

Today, the television has become most important household equipment, so much so that it is almost impossible to spot a house without a television set. It is great for entertainment purpose and could be really informative too, but also has certain disadvantages like addiction, explicit and violent content, social and psychological effects on a person etc.

Role of Television in Education

The role of television in education building has been acknowledged by many countries around the world. It is used as a tool for effectively teaching both formal and non formal education. A television could be synchronized with school curriculum and used to teach a specific subject.

Television is also an efficient method of effectively obtaining non formal education, for those youth and adults who didn’t have a chance to obtain formal education. It could be effectively impart skills, provide vocational training and other necessary cultural and civic education, when used properly.

Educational Television Programs

Today you don’t need to approach your physics teacher, after school hours to understand the Newton’s laws of motion. You just need to switch to educational section in your television and choose from a number of tutorial programs in Physics.

Despite subject oriented programs, a television offers various other non formal education programs which enhance your overall knowledge on issues other than subject matter. To state a few examples History Channel, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel and various other science based Channels do a great deal of imparting education.

The role of television in education building is being widely accepted across the world. The availability of television even in some of the remotest corners of the globe is an added advantage for education through television. People, who lack the access to formal education or school concept, have a glimmer of hope in television educational programs.

Reading Books is like a spiritual exercise, which satisfies your desire to be entertained in a silent but effective way. Watching Television on the other hand, after sometime will leave you stressed, looking for peace and silence. TV slowly drains your inner peace and tranquility, leaving you stressed and flabbergasted. Whatever the TV does to you, Books do just the opposite.

Reading a favorite Book in silence sitting on your favorite chair will relax your soul and mind, and the more you read, the more you will feel content and informed.

If a question- Is Television better than books? Is thrown at me, my answer would be “No” always for very obvious reasons as explained above. I will always choose to silently read my favorite book in my favorite environment, rather than watching Television amid noise and commotion.

Today, the television is found in billions of houses the world over. As per global statistics, nearly 79% of total households own at least one TV set. With such immense popularity and acceptability television has also hugely influenced individuals and even societies. In this essay we will discuss on the boon and bane factors of the television, ending with conclusion.

Television as a Boon

Television, when properly used is a vast sea of knowledge and information as well as the best source of entertainment. There are a number of ways to justify the usefulness of television in our lives. First of all, it is the most primary and most popular source of entertainment. It provides a number of entertainment programs, ranging from daily soaps, singing and dancing competitions, news channels, movie channels, science and fiction channels, business channels, automobile channels and lot more. Moreover, you can view these channels in the language of your choice.

Apart from being entertaining, television is also a tool to gain education and information. There are various channels based on subject matters for school and college going students as well as for the students of PhD level.

There are also a number of NEWS channels running live news from various corners of the world, covering every significant political, social and educational event. A Television set provides all of this useful information in the comfort of our homes, thus proving that television is a boon to humanity.

Television as a Bane

Despite of all the advantages that make television a boon to human race, there also are certain traits of television which could make it really annoying. Speak of the television as annoying and the first thing that flashes through our minds is noise. The sound of a highly emotional soap opera coming from the next room when you are trying to study or sleep could be quite frustrating and annoying.

Moreover, a television also transmits adult and violent programs which could be really misleading for youngsters. Exposure to such malicious contents impacts the personality and social skills of the youngsters, often making them arrogant, hostile, corrupt, violent and socially obscure. Also, addiction to television is an added disadvantage which along with the mentioned effects makes television a bane to humanity.

With regards to the above explanation, it is established that television is both a boon and bane to the humanity. How we use the television makes all the difference between it being a bane or boon. When used purely for information and knowledge purpose it’s a boon, while, when used for entertainment purpose beyond a limit, it could turn into a bane.

Though it is a source of information, the incessant use of Televisions has led to many medical conditions and a drastic change in the social fabric.

Television is Harmful to the Society

Today the younger generation is more susceptible to myopic vision (a medical condition in which person looses his/her normal eyesight) as a result of watching Television for longer duration than advised. Watching TV closely or for longer duration also results in tired eyes, headache and lost concentration.

In past few years there has been a reported increase in the number of children suffering from visual disorders, lost concentration and headache as a consequence of watching TV. Apart from injuring their eye sight, TV slowly makes them inactive turning them into introverts. Instead of going out and playing, mingling with other children, making new friends, they sit motionless and watch TV for hours. The effect that the TV has on their overall persona is not very hard to imagine. Television basically transforms fun loving, outgoing, little enthusiastic wanderers into dumb, visually impaired and introvert kids.

The TV ahs also affected the society in the same manner as it has affected the kids. Today if you visit any locality your town, city or village in evening, you will find closed doors with different sounds of Television coming from the houses. Instead of socializing in their free time, people have taken to watching their favorite program on TV, which provides no informational value at all.

In the past years, when there was no TV, people spend their time socializing, asking about each other’s health and well being, reading their favorite books or newspapers, playing sports and helping one another in the time of need. Now with the invention of TV, all the doors of socialization got closed and people are silently watching TV behind their closed doors, while there neighbor might be looking for help.

The social and psychological implication of TV is more severe than the effects that it has on health. We need to take strict initiative and change the custom of watching TV, if we desire for better health of our Children and want to give them a healthy and content life. Stipulate a short time for TV watching in your house and don’t let your child watch TV. e-media--a boon or bane?

There are a number of phenomena in human wold today which owe their existence to the unexpected and unprecedented advancement in science and technology; and one of them is electronic media. No doubt about the fact that media in its electronic form is one of the most incredible phenomena in this modern age in terms of providing cheaper and faster information to people. I must say that even lexicographers would flounder for words if it comes to say something in the praise of electronic media and its role in this present era. It is the window to unlimited information and knowledge for people from all walks and stages of life.

Despite all this there is a flip side as well to this modern age wonder which makes us to deplore over its invention. One of the most deplorable aspects of this form of media is that it exposes the ‘Joe Bloggs’ to glossy and glittering possessions of film stars, sports stars, business tycoons, etc. and allure them towards the dreams of such life. It does create a desire to rise but unfortunately it can not provide the resources to the underprivileged class which are prerequisite to achieve the success in this materialistic world. Mere desire for things can’t provide you access to them, howsoever strong and pure it may be. You need to have certain amount of support to enable you to achieve what you want to. If you think of getting things on the basis of desire only, it will be something like running an automobile on an uphill road without fuel and which every sensible mind will understand is next to impossible at least for a mortal man.

This unequipped and uncalculated pursuing leads the aspirants to failure and which consequently leads the kindled hearts to the deepest and the darkest layers of frustrations. When people get exposure to affluent life through media, they become extremely enthusiastic about it and start thinking of the means to get access to it. Countless youths of our nation who would have been the heroes of their own kinds, end up just as alcoholics or druggists and keep fluttering and swaying aimlessly just as dried leaves and blades due to their unfulfilled dreams which were created in their hearts by media exposure. I have reason to say that the media can educate, it can inform but at the same time it can mislead and misguide.

Another questionable and unjustified side of media is the disproportionate coverage to ordinary and undesirable events and incidents. It goes really disgusting when we see twenty four hour coverage of a Bollywood(Indian film industry) megastar‘s or a politician’s son or daughter’s wedding or divorce. Cricketing stars are also lionised and idolised by media. Sometimes even the perpetrators of as heinous crime as rape, extortion, murder and treachery become heroes through media coverage. All these things give reason to raise fingers at the most powerful and vital source of information i.e. electronic media. Of course media has to make us acquainted with what is happening in the world but that doesn’t mean that the wrong people and incidents should be popularised for the sake of television rating points.
