The Star Wars Trilogy: Complete Summary

  • The Star Wars Trilogy: Complete…

The First of the three-part series, Star Wars, is the tale of a band of heroes who team together for the good of the universe and the money. The story begins as Princess Leia is held hostage by the Galactic Empire in order to crush the rebellion against them. During the attack on Leia’s ship two droids, R2-D2 and C-P30, escape through an escape pod. They landed on a foreign planet and were captured and sold to their new master Luke Skywalker. The Empire chases the droids because they have a secret map detailing the whereabouts of the rebel base.

As the empire searches for the map they destroy Luke’s home. With nowhere to go R2-D2 leads Luke to Old Ben. One of the last Jedi Knights Ben takes Luke and the droids across the universe to the planet Orion in search of help. They meet Han Solo and Chewbacca who have a ship to get them there.

At this time in an attempt to get the co-ordinates for the Rebel base from Princess Darth Vader, A leader of the Empire, Destroy Orion with their new space station the Death Star. As Luke and Han Aboard the Falcon get near the old planet they are caught by the Death Star. Once inside they escape their captors and seek to escape the Death Star. While doing this they find Leia and free her. Ben also found his long-time student turned evil, Darth Vader, and fights to the death. Vader wins but Ben’s spirit remains with Luke. The others escape but the Empire has already found the location of the rebel base and is on its way to destroy it.

The heroes flee to the rebel base to warn them and a last-ditch attempt to destroy the Death Star is made. Luke is chased by Vader and Solo comes to the rescue. Luke destroys the Death Star and wins.

The Second movie , The Empire Strikes Back, sees the return of all the characters from the previous movie. The rebel base is now on an ice planet. The Empire again attacks and the rebels fled. Leia, Solo, Chewie, and the Droids find themselves stranded in the Falcon from the others and Luke heads out to find Yoda, Bens Master, and learn the force. The Falcon lands in a mining colony run by Lando Calrissian. There they are caught by the Empire in an attempt to catch Luke and turn him to the Dark Side. Luke has found Yoda and has a vision that his friends are in danger. He goes to save them against Yoda’s warning and not knowing of the trap.

Solo is frozen and sent to Jabba the hut who he owes money. The others escape. Luke and Vader fight. Vader frustrated that Luke won’t change cuts off his arm and jumps out to the waste shoot. There he hangs on to his life as he waits for the others to rescue him. While heading back to the rebel fleet Vader telepathically contacts Luke And tells him he is his Father.

The Third Part , The Return Of the Jedi, starts as Leia, Luke, Chewie, Lando and the droids head of to rescue Han. After a Battle, they kill Jabber and rescue Han. During this time Luke shows us his new skills. The others return to the fleet but Luke and R2-D2 go to Yoda. Once there Luke sees Yoda die and is told that his father is Darth Vader and he has a sister, Leia. He then returns to the fleet who have discovered the Empire has a new Death Star and the rebel will attempt to destroy it.

To destroy the Death Star first they must destroy its shields from the Endor Moon. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, and the Droids lead a team to do this. Lando takes the Falcon for the assault on the Death Star. While on the Endor moon they are captured by Ewoks. They make friends with them and help them to fight the Empire. Luke tells Leia they are related and about Vader and surrenders himself to fight his dad and become a Jedi.

Luke goes up to the Death Star and is confronted by the Emperor. Luke fights Vader but this time he wins and cuts off his arm. Now knowing that he has lost the Emperor starts to kill Luke but Vader kills him to save his son. The other destroys the shield then the death star and Luke escapes leaving his father behind to finish dying on the Death Star. The final scene shows all the main characters together with The Ghost of Yoda, Ben and Anakin Skywalker (Vader before he turned to evil).

This article details a subject that is considered canon.

A Padawan , also known as a Padawan learner , Padawan apprentice , Jedi apprentice , or apprentice , was the stage of Jedi training where a Force-sensitive of the Jedi Order trained under a Jedi Knight or Master . A Padawan's master was meant to choose their apprentice, although, during the galactic Clone Wars , the Jedi High Council began to assign Padawans. In order to become a Knight, the Jedi in training needed to complete their time as a Padawan and the Trials .

During the Clone Wars, Padawans were trained in combat and served as military commanders of clone troopers . At the end of the war, however, Order 66 was enacted by Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine , forcing the clones to turn on the Jedi Order. Still, some Jedi survived and, under the guidance of two survivors, Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda , Luke Skywalker was trained as a Jedi. Skywalker attempted to rebuild the Order, but the majority of his apprentices were killed and Ben Solo turned to the dark side of the Force . Years later, Rey , a scavenger from the world of Jakku , became the apprentice of Skywalker and later Leia Organa .

Overview [ ]

Caleb Dume Depa Billaba training

Padawan was a rank of the Jedi Order, given to apprentices who trained to become Jedi Knights.

A Padawan was a Force-sensitive who trained in the Jedi Order to one day become a full-fledged Jedi . Padawans were known as Jedi younglings at first, and trained in classroom settings with multiple students and a teacher. [5] Once they were ready for combat training and intensive study [6] and reached a certain age, Padawans were normally apprenticed to a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master , beginning their one-on-one training. [1] Just as a Padawan learned from their master, often times the teacher could learn from their student. Indeed, a master and apprentice needed to work together to be a true team and learning pair. [7]

Much older than the typical youngling and almost rejected because of his age, Anakin Skywalker was welcomed into the Jedi Order at the age of nine. Immediately upon his initiation into the Order, he was named the Padawan learner to the newly-Knighted Obi-Wan Kenobi . Despite his own experience as a young Padawan, [1] Skywalker, during his days as a Jedi Knight, expressed surprise at [2] the fourteen year old [8] Ahsoka Tano being a Padawan, questioning whether she was old enough for the position. Indeed, Kenobi had at first assumed Tano to be a youngling when he first saw her. [2] During the High Republic Era , the Jedi Vernestra Rwoh was a Padawan at a young age [9] and so much of a prodigy [10] that she was named a Jedi Knight at age fifteen, turning her into one of the youngest Knights in a generation. In fact, she would take on a Padawan of her own, Imri Cantaros , the following year. [9]

No matter their experience or age, all Jedi generally associated meditation with whoever had trained them; despite having been taught the basic principles of the matter during their time as younglings, it was only after becoming a Padawan that a Jedi truly began to understand the process of meditation, spending time, ranging from hours to weeks , sitting next to their master in meditation to uncover the truths of the Force . As such times created an unbreakable bond, it was often the case that a Jedi, even if years had passed since they had last meditated with their master, would find the process difficult after their master died . While it was indeed possible to recover and begin meditation again, the experience was never the same for the affected Jedi. [11]

AnakinAhsokaFreefalling-DotD

A Padawan would undertake missions alongside their master as part of their training.

A Jedi was meant to choose the Padawan whom they wished to train. [12] Even though a Jedi could choose not to take on an apprentice, it was nevertheless considered part of a Jedi's responsibility to train the next generation of the Order. [2] Apprentices would often go on missions with their masters as part of this one-on-one training. The Code forbade a Jedi from training more than one Padawan or apprentice at a time . Most of the Padawans were known to grow or wear Padawan braids to symbolize their rank. After completing the Jedi Trials , a Padawan would be promoted to the rank of Jedi Knight. [1] It was rare for a Padawan to not advance to the rank of Jedi Knight, [13] but the struggles a Padawan faced on that journey, and the time it took to over come them, varied person-to-person. [14]

History [ ]

High republic era [ ].

HRAAnnualHarvey

Padawan Bell Zettifar was trained by Jedi Master Loden Greatstorm.

During the High Republic Era, a common training experience for Padawans was to be placed at a Jedi outpost alongside their master in the Outer Rim Territories , helping to uphold justice in the yet to be explored region. Nevertheless, they were sometimes given off-world assignments that took them away from the outpost. Padawan Bell Zettifar and his master, Loden Greatstorm , were stationed at the Elphrona Outpost . When they were meant to be rotated back to the capital of Coruscant , Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh established a hyperspace blockade due to the Emergences , forcing the two Jedi to stay on Elphrona for some time . During the Nihil pirates ' raid on Elphrona , Greatstorm informed his apprentice that he was worthy of the title of Jedi Knight, but—after Greatstorm was captured by the Nihil—Zettifar refused to go through the Jedi Trials until he was rescued, wanting his mentor to attend the ceremony. [15]

In the aftermath of the Battle of Grizal , during which the Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro unleashed the Great Leveler , which turned Greatstorm to stone and left other Jedi on the battlefield, including Zettifar, mortified, [11] Jedi Padawans were asked to step up and help the Jedi Order in whatever way they could, just like the more experienced Knights and Jedi Masters. As such, a number of Padawans aboard the Starlight Beacon left to help defend the Jedi Temple of the planet Takodana from a Nihil attack . [16] The stress of battles against the Nihil led to Masters Torban Buck and Kantam Sy re-establishing the " Great Jedi Rumble Race " for the Padawans of Starlight Beacon. [17] As the conflict carried on, Padawan Ram Jomaram found that masters were more willing to have their apprentices learn by "doing" and reasoned the previous generation of Jedi had not had the chance to take on as much duty as current Padawans needed to. He theorized to fellow Padawan Reath Silas that their mentors wanted the new generation to have an easier time during missions. Indeed, Silas's master, Cohmac Vitus , reflected to Sy that fighting dangers across the war-torn Galactic Frontier was not the life the two of them had been raised for. [18]

Fall of the Jedi [ ]

AhsokaBarriss-WF

During the Clone Wars, Padawans served in the Grand Army of the Republic as Jedi Commanders.

During the Clone Wars , the Jedi High Council began to assign Padawans to Jedi Knights, instead of allowing them to choose. [12] During the war, Padawans were trained in combat and forged into officers [19] of the Republic Military partly because of a lack of military leaders. Padawans held the rank of Jedi Commander and could lead forces of clone troopers as large as a regiment . [20] This led to cases where young and inexperienced Padawans, many of them still teenagers, outranked clone troopers with far more experience in combat. At the end of the conflict, in 19 BBY , Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine , secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, issued Clone Protocol 66 , [21] forcing [22] the troopers to turn on their Jedi Generals and Commanders. [21]

After the establishment of the Galactic Empire , a few ex-Padawans that had survived Order 66 or left the Jedi Order before the purge joined the nascent Rebel Alliance . [23] This was the case of Anakin Skywalker 's former apprentice, Ahsoka Tano , [24] as well as Depa Billaba 's former apprentice Caleb Dume , [25] who became known as Kanan Jarrus [26] and later took on a Padawan of his own, Ezra Bridger . [27] By 0 BBY , Luke Skywalker , the son of Anakin Skywalker, began training under Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi [28] and later Yoda . [29]

Rebirth [ ]

Rey TLJ

Luke Skywalker trained Rey as his final Jedi apprentice.

Sometime after the Liberation of Lothal , Ahsoka Tano took on Sabine Wren as her Padawan and taught her for a time. [31] After the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY , which saw the deaths of both Emperor Palpatine and his apprentice Darth Vader, Skywalker attempted to rebuild the Jedi Order. However, his new generation of Jedi were killed by his nephew, Ben Solo , who fell to the dark side of the Force . Following this, Skywalker isolated himself to the First Jedi Temple on the Temple Island on the distant planet of Ahch-To . [32]

In 34 ABY , [33] Rey , [30] a scavenger [32] from Jakku , arrived at the island to enlist him in the Resistance 's fight against the First Order , and later became his apprentice. Despite his misgivings about the Jedi Order, Skywalker trained her on the Temple Island and had his faith in the Jedi restored after a conversation with Yoda's Force spirit . [30]

Following the Battle of Crait , General Leia Organa referred to Rey as having been Skywalker's apprentice to Ambassador Yendor of Ryloth . [34]

By the time of the return of Darth Sidious, in 35 ABY , [35] Rey had begun training under Organa on Ajan Kloss , where the Resistance had established a secret base . Using her training, Rey would eventually go on to redeem Ben Solo and defeat Darth Sidious once and for all. [36]

Behind the scenes [ ]

The term "Padawan" first written as "Padawaan" appeared as far back in George Lucas 's first story treatments for the 1977 film Star Wars : Episode IV A New Hope , then titled as Journal of the Whills . [37] It wasn't heard, however, before the filming of the 1999 film Star Wars : Episode I The Phantom Menace , the first installment of the prequel trilogy . [1] In all previous works, including the original movies or early Star Wars Legends stories, the concept was referred to as "Apprentice."

Set after the events of Star Wars : Episode VI Return of the Jedi , the Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine VR experience released by ILMxLAB featured an unidentified hopeful Padawan who hoped to become part of Luke Skywalker's new Jedi Order. In an ensuing mission to Tatooine , however, the Padawan found themself attacked by an Imperial remnant force. In the end, the Jedi would be victorious. [38]

Reddit-Inspired Star Wars Physics Homework

Image may contain Building City Town Urban Metropolis Architecture Hangar Transportation Vehicle and Aircraft

Everyone loves Star Wars. And what goes better with Star Wars than a nice side dish of physics? Nothing.

I recently did a Reddit AMA on the Science of Star Wars . If you like, you can check some of the very interesting questions (along with my answers). Or even better, I will list some Reddit inspired questions in Star Wars that you can turn in for homework. The usual rule applies, if you wait too long to turn in the homework, I might answer them instead.

Before I get to the Reddit questions, here is one from Chad Orzel (from Uncertain Principles) . He couldn't make it to the AMA, so his is a tweet.

@ rjallain I'll be teaching then, so: How long would it take the Emperor to fall all the way down to the reactor core of the Death Star? — Chad Orzel (@orzelc) February 14, 2013

Since this is the first question, let me give a hint. Here is a post regarding something falling through the Earth . The key point is that the gravitational force will decrease the closer you get to the center of the Death Star. If you want bonus points, you will include air resistance on Emperor as he falls.

Actually, I think you could do a video analysis of the actual scene from RoTJ. It wouldn't be perfect, but you could get some data.

Now for the questions from Reddit. You might want to take a peek at my answers on the AMA, but that won't be good enough for a full homework answer.

  • How hot is a light saber? (from roguepublichealth) I think you have to first figure out what a light saber actually is and why it glows.
  • How much material would be needed to build the Death Star (from astanisic) You will obviously need some estimates here. If you want a second question, how long would it take to put this Death Star together. You can answer for both the first (Episode IV) and second (Episode VI) Death Stars - which are different sizes.
  • How can you make artificial gravity in a spaceship (other than spinning) (from awhit13). I think this question might be accomplished with a literature review. Surely someone out there has come up with an explanation for how these spaceships could have artificial gravity in them. Oh, and if you just say "interial dampeners", you will fail.
  • What is more deadly, blasters or kinetic weapons (conventional bullets) (from JimmyDeLaRustles). I guess you need to first figure out what a blaster bolt actually is made of. My guess is that it is plasma. Next you need to say how something is deadly - is it the kinetic energy, the total energy, the momentum?
  • Why doesn't an AT-AT fall over when it walks? (from RagingLlamas) You might want to examine the Hoth battle scene from Episode V.
  • How far in the past do the Star Wars movies take place? Clearly, there isn't an exact answer. You can get a range of ages though. Also, how far away is this galaxy - a range is fine too.
  • Where is the center of mass for a light saber that is thrown? (from BrooklynKnight) Check out the scene where Vader throws his light saber.

There you go. No cheating.

Oh, a bonus essay question: Compare and contrast the physics of Star Wars vs. the physics of Star Trek.

Star Wars Workbook: Preschool Number Fun (Star Wars Workbooks) Paperback – June 17, 2014

Purchase options and add-ons.

The Force is strong with this series! Introducing a line of workbooks that marries the iconic popularity of Star Wars with the unique mix of editorial quality, fun presentation, and rigorous educational standards that Workman applied to the BRAIN QUEST Workbooks. Twelve titles launch the series―three each for Pre-K through 2nd Grade―and dig deep into core subjects, including numbers, ABCs, phonics, and reading readiness for younger grades, and math, reading, and writing for the older ones. The material, which aligns with national Common Core State Standards, is designed to reinforce essential concepts and lessons taught in schools. Any child, not just fans of Star Wars ―but yes, those fans will be especially delighted (as will reluctant learners)―will love the “A” is for Anakin approach to phonics. Kids will practice learning numbers by counting and circling X-wing starfighters and clone troopers. Master place values by sorting groups of Wookiees. There are math problems― Yoda is holding 7 lightsabers. 5 of the lightsabers are blue. The rest are green. How many green lightsabers is he holding? And Language Arts― Circle the correct homophone in this sentence: Luke is a Jedi knight/night. Featuring favorite characters like Luke Skywalker, Queen Amidala, Yoda, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and other creatures, monsters, Jedi, and Sith, the workbooks are filled with thousands of original illustrations drawing from all six Star Wars movies and the expanded Star Wars universe. Learn well, you will.

A Back-to-School Guide for Padawans

{:title=>"Fans + Community", :url=>"https://www.starwars.com/news/category/fans-+-community"}

A back-to-school guide for padawans.

Jennifer Landa

The time is here, my young Padawans, to head off to Jedi training.  Or as some people call it, “go back to school.”  Ah yes, I can hear you cheering now.  School is a fantastic place to learn, challenge yourself, and interact with all different types of people.  But for some younglings, heading back to school can be a scary time.  When I was a kid, going back to school made me as nervous as Ben Quadinaros in a podrace.  So when the going got tough, I watched Star Wars .  Star Wars gave me hope and many valuable life lessons along the way.  In Master Yoda, I had the greatest after-school tutor ever!

If you're feeling a little nervous this Fall, have no fear my young Padawan.  I’ve been in your shoes and can tell you that your K-12 experiences will make you a strong Jedi Knight one day.  I thought I’d share some of my favorite Star Wars quotes (along with some tips of my own) that have inspired and challenged me throughout the years.  I hope they do the same for you and remind you that the Force will be with you.  Always.

“Never tell me the odds” – Han Solo, The Empire Strikes Back

Asteroid Field

In life you may encounter a naysayer (or Protocol Droid) who will give you reasons why you can't or won't succeed.  If you can’t turn off their power, simply tune out their negative comments.  Some of the world’s greatest inventors, athletes, and artists were told they couldn’t achieve their dreams.  Rather than giving up, they dug deep within themselves, put in the hard work, and believed they would succeed.  Focus on the possibilities rather than the odds, and you can do the same.  Even if there's a giant asteroid in your way.

"Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son.” -  Darth Vader, The Empire Strikes Back

Darth Vader & Luke

There may come a time when someone may want you to join the Dark Side.  It may be tempting---especially if they wear a cool cape and helmet.  But giving into peer pressure isn't the way to make or keep friends.  A true friend will like you even if you're on opposite sides of the Force.  It may be difficult to say no in the moment, but afterwards you'll be thankful you didn’t give into someone or something you weren't sure about.  Heck, Luke chose to fall down an air shaft rather than giving in to his dad's pressure.  Talk about a tough decision!

"Size matters not.  Look at me.  Judge me by my size, do you?" - Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

Size Matters Not

Yoda was only 2 feet tall but he was one powerful Jedi Master.  (Remember that lightsaber battle in Attack of the Clones ?)  Power and strength doesn’t just come from muscles---it comes from your mind.  Don’t let your size, physical limitations, or stature limit your dreams.  At this year’s Olympics, runner Oscar Pistorius made history by becoming the first double amputee to compete on the track.  He believes, “you’re not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have.”  I’m sure Master Yoda would agree.

“Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they…if once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will…" - Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

Untitled-1

Do bullies make you angry?  When I run into a bully (in person on online) I certainly feel my blood begin to boil.  So what do you do if you encounter someone who belittles, humiliates, or threatens you?  Don’t immediately go for your lightsaber or seek revenge like a Sith.  You can  1) tell the bully that their behavior is hurtful  2) walk away and ignore them  3) tell an adult, parent, or person of authority about the situation.  Whatever you do, don’t let your anger and fear fester inside you.  Whenever a bully really got to me, I always found it helpful to vent my frustrations with someone I trusted, like my mom.  It’s important to feel supported during those tough times.  Because Force-choking someone (even if they are a bully) is never the answer.

“But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!” – Luke Skywalker, Star Wars

Tosche Station

How many times have you wanted to go to Tosche Station, or watch TV, or hang out with friends but your parents wouldn’t let you because of you have to do….homework.  It may be annoying now but you’ll thank your parents later.  And no, your parents didn’t pay me to say that.  ;)  Getting your work done before play is an important time management skill that you’ll use for the rest of your life. Procrastination often leads to scrambling at the last minute.  So don’t get distracted and leave your work hanging.  Do what Gold Five said and, “stay on target”!

“Do, or do not.  There is no try.” – Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

Yoda

I have 3 words for you:  GO FOR IT!  Don’t second guess yourself or worry about a perfect outcome.  Do put all of your energy and effort toward your goal.  You know that old saying, “you get what you give?”  That pretty much sums it up.  Now you may not score a home run every time, but you’ll feel good knowing that you gave it your best effort.  Who knows, if you commit 100% you just might score an A on that test or make the soccer team.  Or better yet, win the podrace against Sebulba.  :)

Since 1977, Star Wars has been entertaining audiences around the world. 4 Star Wars Tech Tools for Teaching

With Star Wars Day (May the 4th) fast approaching, it's a good time to appreciate how far edtech has come

star wars teaching tools

Star Wars Day — otherwise known as May the 4th — is fast approaching and this year I can’t help but think about how some of the technology depicted in the films and TV series has now become commonplace in classrooms and teaching. (Yes, when I’m not thinking about the Roman Empire , I’m often thinking about Star Wars.)

Tech & Learning has already written a guide to Star Wars teaching tips for May the 4th , but here I’m going to focus on how many of us — myself very much included — are increasingly incorporating Star Wars-style tech into the classroom. In many cases, this technology once would have seemed extraordinary except now seems commonplace.

Hopefully, this article reminds you of just how cool some of the teaching tools we currently have are. May the tech be with you!

1. These Are The Droids You're Looking For

In the last two years, generative AI has become, for better or worse, a part of every classroom. When I’m not trying to prevent students from submitting AI-generated papers , I often marvel at just how spectacular the technology is. ChatGPT and other similar chatbots might lack the personality and seeming sentience of C-3P0 but at least they can speak in words rather than beeps like R2-D2 and BB-8.

While there are downsides to this technology, AI also has the potential to really help students learn. In other words, the force is undeniably strong with generative AI, let’s just hope it does not succumb to the dark side.

Oh, and speaking of droids and robots , these devices are now common in classrooms everywhere, providing hands-on STEM learning opportunities and potential SEL support that I could only have dreamt of as a kid.

2. Holograms

Modern hologram technology isn’t quite as advanced as the Princess Leia hologram recording in Star Wars: A New Hope, but it’s getting better and better. Today’s hologram systems are being used by select universities and K12 schools to provide experiences that allow speakers to beam into rooms that they are not in, or prerecord presentations, all with a lifelike presence that goes way beyond Zoom or a standard recording.

Tech & Learning Newsletter

Tools and ideas to transform education. Sign up below.

You might not have access to this technology yet, but discussing how it works and its limitations can be a great Star Wars-themed lesson. As a holographic recording of Princess Leia might say, “Help your students [insert your name here], you’re their only hope.”

3. Video Conferencing

This technology went from cool and new-ish to absolutely despised in a few months in the spring and summer of 2020. But as frustrating as Zoom and other video conference meetings can be, the ability to communicate with video over vast distances is nothing at which to scoff. When Emperor Palpatine make his first on-screen appearance The Empire Strikes Back it is via video call. And much like with many of your video calls, the connection is kind of spotty.

The term “Zoom classes” may still give many teachers PTSD, but don’t forget about this technology. It’s a great way to bring in guest speakers and connect with students who can’t be physically present. And now that we're on the other side of the pandemic, teachers can resurrect this technology to strong and truly futuristic effect — just try and put more thought into this resurrection than the writers of The Rise of Skywalker did to Emperor Palpatine’s in that film. (Like, seriously, how did a major studio, presumably with adult employees allow that?)

4. Phones and Tablets More Powerful Than Lightsabers

The phones and devices most students have these days not only come fully equipped to make the cool lightsaber swoosh and buzzing sound, but are a vital piece of technology that can help guide young jedis in training on their educational journey. If the pen is really mightier than the sword, than the smart phones and other internet devices are mightier than lightsabers!

We often don’t use these devices or try to limit student use, which can be a mistake. Sure, these can be misused or a distraction, but imagine if a teacher from 1977, the year the first Star Wars film came out, was told that students would one day have devices that could instantly provide them with summaries of almost all human knowledge. How would this teacher utilize these devices? They certainly wouldn’t ban them, and would be excited by their educational potential.

So put these real-life lightsabers to good use. And, yes, I’m fully aware that Star Trek’s tricorders are a better comparison point for smartphones, but how many Star Trek-themed holidays are there? Oh wait, there are multiple Star Trek-themed holidays …

Anyhow, live long and … er , I mean, May the Force (or 4th) be with you!

Make Star Wars and Marvel Fun Again: Turn Homework Into Recess!

Make Star Wars and Marvel Fun Again: In a galaxy far, far away, and within the intricate web of the Marvel Universe, lies a challenge that many young fans face: understanding the complexities of Star Wars and Marvel.

As these iconic franchises continue to expand and evolve, the task of comprehending their vast lore can often feel like homework rather than playtime.

But what if there was a way to turn this educational journey into a recess of fun and excitement?

Stay tuned as we explore how bridging the gap between learning and leisure could be the key to reigniting the joy of Star Wars and Marvel for fans of all ages.

Table of Contents

Introduction and Background

In setting the stage for the cinematic landscape’s shifting tides, the article delves into the current challenges faced by major Hollywood franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. With declining ticket sales and mixed critical reception, these behemoths of the silver screen are facing turbulent waters.

Theories abound, pointing fingers at possible culprits such as superhero fatigue and market oversaturation. But perhaps the simplest explanation lies in the complexity of these franchises themselves. Imagine trying to hop into the latest Marvel or Star Wars installment without the background knowledge acquired from previous movies – it’s like trying to solve a calculus problem without knowing basic arithmetic.

This struggle to keep up with the intricate web of storylines and characters may be turning off audiences, leading to the decline in both box office numbers and viewer enthusiasm. As Hollywood juggles these challenges, the future of these beloved franchises hangs in the balance, waiting for a spark of innovation to reignite the magic of cinema.

Marvel’s Complex Universe

For those navigating the intricate web of Marvel’s interconnected universe, transforming homework into recess proves to be the ultimate escape. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has evolved from standalone stories to interconnected crossovers, challenging fans to keep up with character developments across various movies and TV shows.

Take, for example, the upcoming film ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ which delves deep into the complexities of the MCU. To truly grasp the nuances of these narratives, one must invest time in immersing themselves in the entire Marvel universe, including sidekick appearances and subtle references. This complexity acts as a double-edged sword, offering depth for dedicated fans while potentially alienating newcomers who find the extensive lore daunting.

Best For: Those dedicated Marvel fans who enjoy immersing themselves in the interconnected universe and are willing to invest time in watching multiple movies and TV shows to fully understand the character developments.

  • Offers a depth of storytelling and character connections that enrich the viewing experience for dedicated fans.
  • Provides a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment for those who enjoy unraveling intricate narratives and spotting subtle references.
  • Fosters a strong sense of community and shared enthusiasm among fans who are deeply engaged with the Marvel universe.
  • May be overwhelming for new viewers or casual fans who find the extensive lore and interconnected nature of the MCU daunting.

Challenges of Understanding Star Wars

Navigating the intricacies of the Star Wars franchise presents fans with a unique set of challenges, particularly when it comes to understanding characters like Boba Fett. Boba Fett’s storyline spans multiple Star Wars properties, making it essential for fans to delve into various films and series to grasp the full scope of his character. To illustrate this complexity, let’s explore the required viewing for understanding Boba Fett:

Each of these entries provides crucial context for Boba Fett’s journey, shedding light on his motivations, alliances, and transformations throughout the Star Wars narrative. For those seeking a comprehensive understanding of this iconic character, immersing oneself in these interconnected storylines is essential. As with Marvel, the intricate web of Star Wars lore adds depth to the characters and their arcs, but also poses a challenge for newcomers trying to make sense of the galaxy far, far away.

Critique and Conclusion

Critically assessing the evolving landscape of franchise consumption reveals a growing demand for dedicated engagement with intricate storylines, potentially reshaping the viewing experience for both casual and committed fans alike.

  • Overwhelming Preparation: The article critiques the extensive preparation needed to fully enjoy new Marvel and Star Wars content, suggesting that this may deter casual viewers.
  • Nostalgia vs. Complexity: It contrasts the nostalgia for self-contained films like The Dark Knight with the current complex interconnectivity of franchises, posing a challenge for viewers.
  • Full-Time Job Comparison: The piece suggests that keeping up with Marvel and Star Wars has become akin to a full-time job due to the vast amount of prior content needed to understand new releases.
  • Alienating Casual Viewers: The conclusion proposes that the increasing complexity and amount of content required may alienate casual viewers, potentially impacting the popularity of these franchises.

In essence, the article calls for a reevaluation of the balance between intricate storytelling and accessibility to ensure the enjoyment of franchise content for all types of viewers.

News in Brief

Navigating the expansive realms of Star Wars and Marvel can sometimes feel like homework, dampening the joy for fans. The intricate web of interconnected storylines and characters in these beloved franchises has led to declining ticket sales and mixed reviews. Marvel’s complex universe, with its interconnected crossovers, offers depth but may overwhelm newcomers. Meanwhile, understanding Star Wars, particularly characters like Boba Fett, requires delving into various films and series. Critics argue that the extensive preparation needed may deter casual viewers, posing a challenge for the future of these cinematic giants. The call is for a reevaluation, seeking a balance between intricate storytelling and accessibility to rekindle the magic for all fans.

Did Star Wars save Marvel?

Marvel’s publication of the earliest Star Wars comics played a crucial role in saving the company from financial troubles in the late 1970s, as highlighted by former Marvel Editor-in-Chief, Jim Shooter .

Is Marvel more popular than Star Wars?

In a recent survey conducted by online community and data firm Fandom, Star Wars emerged as the top franchise, surpassing Marvel, reflecting the enduring popularity and influence of the iconic space opera.

Did Secret Wars reboot the Marvel Universe?

The upcoming Marvel film is anticipated to draw inspiration from Jonathan Hickman’s acclaimed 2015 event, Secret Wars. This storyline served as a soft reset, integrating beloved character Miles Morales into the primary Earth-616 Marvel Universe. The adaptation is eagerly awaited by fans.

Star Wars actor says Rian Johnson didn't do "his homework" for The Last Jedi

"You can't reinvent Star Wars without knowing Star Wars first."

The eighth movie in the main Skywalker saga proved very divisive among fans when it was released back in 2017, many criticisms focusing on how characters such as Luke Skywalker were handled.

Witwer – who has voiced a number of characters in the franchise's TV shows and video games, notably Darth Maul – seems to be among those voicing their displeasure at the movie.

" Last Jedi , to me, felt like a movie made by a guy who hadn't quite done his homework," he suggested during a Twitch livestream. "I think Rian Johnson's a talented guy, but Bruce Lee didn't develop Jeet Kune Do without learning Kung Fu first.

"You can't reinvent Star Wars without knowing Star Wars first and he didn't, for me, make a compelling argument for why Luke wouldn't go and help his sister.

"Or if indeed Luke is hiding out on that island because he feels so badly for how he handled Kylo Ren — then why is Luke trash talking Kylo Ren at the end of the movie? Which is it, do you feel bad that you hurt this boy or do you trash talk him?"

He went on to note that it was his "opinion" while also praising some aspects of the movie, adding: "There were a lot of things in The Last Jedi that I think was compelling in a Rian Johnson filmmaker point of view. They just didn't fit into Star Wars .

"I don't think he did his Star Wars homework. I'm talking like the themes, what it's about, what the characters are about. But as a standalone film, if I don't know what the Jedi are or who Luke is or what he represents, I think there's some compelling things in there. If that's meaningful to you, that's awesome."

While many have hit out at The Last Jedi , Johnson has defended his movie numerous times, arguing last year that the risks he took were in keeping with franchise traditions.

10 surprising facts about Star Wars you didn’t know

Thanks to its status as one of the most popular franchises in the history of movies,  Star Wars  has a hoard of fans that rivals any out there.

Obi-Wan was supposed to survive

The opening crawl was done practically, mark hamill made $1,000 a week for the first film, the empire strikes back caused a guild controversy, the battle of endor was supposed to take place on kashyyyk, r2-d2 was originally supposed to speak english, return of the jedi could have ended very differently, nsync was almost in attack of the clones, the porgs were created to hide puffins.

  • Qui-Gon’s communicator is a woman’s razor

It’s also got plenty of trivia that has accumulated for decades, and if you’re someone who digs deep on everything from Star Wars shows to even the Star Wars movies that don’t happen , then you might be interested in some of the facts we’ve assembled here. Here are 10 facts about the mega-franchise that may surprise even some major fans.

There were numerous changes from Lucas’s first draft of  Star Wars to the movie we ultimately saw, but one of the most significant has to do with the fate of Luke’s mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

  • If you have to watch one Star Wars movie this May the 4th, stream this one
  • 10 surprising facts about Stranger Things you didn’t know
  • The 10 best lightsaber duels in Star Wars, ranked

In early drafts, Obi-Wan was supposed to survive his fight with Vader and live to see the end of the movie. Of course, the ending we got was hugely impactful, and Alec Guinness (who famously hated Star Wars ) was probably glad that his screen time would be much more limited in the sequels.

Although there are now plenty of programs you can use to simulate the Star Wars opening crawl, the crawl for the first film was actually done without the help of any computers at all.

Instead, they placed two-foot wide yellow paper letters over a black background and moved the camera to simulate the crawl. Ultimately, the opening crawl took 3 hours to shoot, but the effect was instantly iconic in a way that has endured for almost 50 years.

Star Wars gave Mark Hamill his career, so the actor doesn’t really have anything to complain about. Even so, it’s remarkable to think that he only made $1,000 a week to star in what would become one of the biggest films of all time.

That was plenty of money to get by in 1977, and Hamill would make $1 million for  Empire  alone, but that salary speaks to how low-budget the original film was. It may have become a huge hit, but nobody knew it would be one.

It used to be incredibly common for most or even all of the credits for a movie to play at the beginning, but A New Hope   was a huge part of the shift toward showing those credits at the end. When Lucas tried to do the same thing for  The Empire Strikes Back , several major Hollywood guilds, including the Writer’s Guild, tried to have the movie pulled from theaters.

Guild rules stated that the writer and director’s names had to be at the beginning of the film. Ultimately, Lucas just had to pay a fine, but he was so annoyed by the controversy that he withdrew his membership from all the major Hollywood guilds.

Lucas eventually realized his vision for the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk in Revenge of the Sith , but he initially wanted that planet to be the setting for much of  Return of the Jedi . Lucas eventually scrapped the idea because he felt that the Wookiees were too advanced as a society for it to work.

He wanted the Battle of Endor to be thematically about a low-tech, primitive civilization proving that it had what it took to take out the Empire. That’s how we got the Ewoks, which really just look like smaller Wookiees if you squint.

Another change from an early version of the script, R2-D2 was originally supposed to speak English and be kind of a jerk on top of that. Of course, you could argue that R2 remained a jerk into the finished product, just one that was much harder to understand.

At one point in the initial scripts, R2 tells C-3PO: “You’re nothing more than a dim-witted, emotion-brained intellectual. Why you were created is beyond my logic systems.” Probably better to stick with random boops and beeps.

During an initial story meeting for Return of the Jedi , Lucas suggested to Lawrence Kasdan that the movie could have a very dark ending. “Luke takes [Vader’s] mask off. The mask is the very last thing — and then Luke puts it on and says, ‘Now I am Vader.’ Surprise! The ultimate twist. ‘Now I will go and kill the [Rebel] fleet, and I will rule the universe,'” Lucas reportedly said.

Kasdan loved the idea, but Lucas ultimately decided that a more conventionally happy ending was the right way to go.

The early 2000s were a strange, heady time filled with boy bands and Star Wars prequels . Briefly, it seemed like those two may cross over when George Lucas’s daughter asked her dad to bring NSYNC to the set of  Attack of the Clones  for a cameo.

Justin Timberlake and Lance Bass declined, but the rest of the band actually filmed as Jedi Knights during the movie’s final battle. Were they any good? We may never know, as their scenes were cut out of the movie’s final cut.

The miracles of modern computer graphics mean that even filming issues can turn into something memorable. When The Last Jedi   was filming in Ireland, it was impossible to get a wide show that didn’t include the hundreds of puffins that are native to the island.

Puffins don’t exist in Star Wars, though, so the team got creative and created a creature called a Porg that resembles a puffin but could be native to the island where Luke had been hiding out. Porgs became a meme in their own right, and all because of those darn puffins.

Qui-Gon’s communicator is a woman’s razor

By the time  The Phantom Menace rolled around, Lucas essentially had a blank check to make whatever he wanted. Even so, there were still some times when the easiest answer was to just use something that already existed instead of building a totally custom prop.

As it turns out, that’s exactly what they did for Qui-Gon’s communicator, which was built using the molds for a woman’s razor.

The Mission: Impossible franchise is about to unleash another blockbuster event with the upcoming release of Dead Reckoning - Part One. The hype surrounding this film is palpable, as audiences will surely see what is just the beginning of IMF's most formidable mission to date and quite possibly Ethan Hunt's final adventure.

As the world prepares to witness this espionage extravaganza, readers can brush up on their knowledge of the franchise with these 10 surprising facts about the Mission: Impossible series. It's based on a TV series

The Legend of Zelda franchise has left fans wanting to see Link and the titular princess go on an adventure on the big screen. This desire has only been intensified by the popular release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and debunked rumors that Illumination Entertainment was making an animated adaptation.

It may be a long time before Nintendo makes a Zelda film, but for those who enjoyed their latest gaming masterpiece, these five movies should give audiences a similar cinematic experience. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986)

On May 25, 1977, the original Star Wars film premiered in theaters and changed cinema forever. That's a seminal date for fans of the franchise, especially with the 45th anniversary coming up this year. With that in mind, Disney+ and Lucasfilm have set May 25 as the premiere date for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi mini-series.

Ewan McGregor will headline the Obi-Wan Kenobi series in the title role, which he previously filled in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. McGregor also lent his voice for cameo appearances in the sequel trilogy, but this will mark his first on-camera appearance as Obi-Wan since Revenge of the Sith in 2005.

Ahsoka Season 2: Story, Updates, Everything We Know

Ezra bridger actor eman esfandi explains why ahsoka was right not to bring back one more rebel, cobra kai’s final season can do something all original karate kid movies failed to.

  • Eman Esfandi's portrayal of Ezra Bridger in Ahsoka has garnered praise for its accuracy and has been validated by both viewers and fellow cast members.
  • Esfandi studied the later seasons and episodes of Star Wars Rebels to prepare for the role of Ezra, skipping the younger version of the character to maintain a connection with the older version.
  • As the story develops and Grand Admiral Thrawn's return is explored, Ezra will play a significant role, potentially becoming one of the main Jedi leading the fight against Thrawn in the future of Star Wars.

Eman Esfandi's performance as Ezra Bridger in Ahsoka has earned him nothing but praise from viewers and critics alike, specifically for how accurately he portrays his animated Star Wars Rebels counterpart. Esfandi made his Star Wars debut at the end of Ahsoka episode 6 , and in the two episodes following, he proved just how perfect he was for the role of Ezra. Ever since, Esfandi has been told " You're so Ezra " by nearly everyone - viewers, fellow cast members, and now, even creator Dave Filoni himself. Despite this, Esfandi has shared just how much he actually studied Ezra's character prior to filming Ahsoka , and his answer makes perfect sense.

Ahsoka season 2 has finally been confirmed by Star Wars, and the story is now in development. Here's everything we know about the project.

In a video shared by sabine ☽☾ , Esfandi revealed at LA Comic Con exactly how much of Rebels he watched, and as it turns out, the actor only studied the later seasons and episodes of the animated show. He jokes viewers " might have taken my head off " prior to his debut as Ezra if they knew this, but that his reason for foregoing the earlier seasons of the show was because " I didn’t want to get too caught up in the younger version of Ezra ." Esfandi shares he felt " connected " to the older version of Ezra and how the character was written, especially in the episodes where Ezra most intimately shared moments with Sabine, Ahsoka, and the " Spectre crew ."

Esfandi also pays tribute to his fallen master, Kanan Jarrus, assuring viewers he's seen his tragic death repeatedly thanks to TikTok. He adds that he found validation in not finishing the series from the praise he received on set, with everyone insisting the very same thing audiences have done ever since his debut as Ezra: " No, yeah, that’s Ezra. Oh, that’s also so Ezra."

Eman Esfandi's Ezra Bridger Is Too Perfect To Ignore

Esfandi focusing on the older version of Ezra before his Ahsoka performance not only makes perfect sense, but it also proves the true thought and care Esfandi has put behind this role. This has been made clear through his incredible performance in the role, something that's even started to bleed into the way he carries himself around viewers and interacts on social media. Everyone everywhere continues to insist he's just like Ezra, and this makes it impossible to see a Star Wars future where Esfandi's Ezra isn't important to every story surrounding him.

Ezra will become increasingly important as the ramifications of Grand Admiral Thrawn 's return to the galaxy are felt, especially as the one who was trapped with the Imperial mastermind on Peridea for so many years. There's no doubt Ezra will be one of the main Jedi leading the fight against Thrawn when the time comes, especially heading into Filoni's upcoming The Mandalorian -era culmination movie. Esfandi has proven in Ahsoka alone that his character will be both an important and a fun person to follow as this story goes on, and thus the future of Star Wars will more than likely see his character appear time and time again.

Chemist explores the real-world science of Star Wars

A professor at the University of Warwick is exploring the chemistry of the galaxy far, far away this Star Wars Day, May the 4th.

Science fiction is meeting science fact, as Professor Alex Baker discusses the captivating inspiration real-world reactions have had on the Star Wars universe.

The chemist from the University of Warwick explores what may underpin the freezing of Han Solo, the colors of lightsabers, the reactions that power star ships and much more.

The common elements found in the Star Wars realm, Professor Baker notes, are also exploited for their explosiveness and combustibility here on Earth. He has demonstrated how the elements are used in a series of experiments, which he will showcase at a talk at The Royal Institution tomorrow evening.

According to Professor Baker, the Star Wars galaxy, like our own, uses liquid oxygen in rocket engines. "By igniting fuels with oxygen in the engine of a rocket you can produce huge amounts of thrust.

"This is demonstrated in a 'purple cannon fire' reaction that produces oxygen as a product. The oxygen formed then catches light as it passes through a flame. You can see the incredible violence caused by the burning of just a small amount of oxygen gas and fuel."

A common element found in our own universe, sodium, is used as a fuel in the Star Wars universe. "Sodium reacts with water to produce hydrogen gas, often leading to an explosion," said Professor Baker.

Here on Earth sodium has other uses too, for example in some nuclear reactors to transfer the heat generated from the nuclear reactor to turbines that produce electricity.

Chemicals containing nitrogen are also fundamental to warfare in the galaxy far, far away, suggests Professor Baker.

"Baradium nitrate can be found in every Imperial stormtrooper's kit, in their thermal detonators, and also as star ship fuel."

While Baradium is fictional, nitrates and other nitrogen-containing compounds are found in our own galaxy in explosives such as TNT or in rocket fuels—particularly those produced by Soviet scientists. As demonstrated by Professor Baker, the reaction of nitric acid with nitrogen-containing compounds has incredibly violent results.

While cryogens might sound other-worldly, they are used on Earth in freezing. For example, liquid nitrogen and solid carbon dioxide are common examples of cryogens which can be used to freeze objects, such as human eggs in IVF treatment.

Professor Baker suggests that compounds like this could have inspired the freezing of Han Solo—a famous scene in the Star Wars saga.

Professor Baker also reproduces the bright colors of lightsabers by flame test experiments—a staple in most school chemistry classes—which show how different elements produce different colors when heated.

He said, "Elements commonly found in salts are used in these flame tests. They're responsible for the colors in fireworks, so the Star Wars universe could use similar science in lightsabers.

"The colors are created when the elements are heated, causing them to release light in different colors, from bright blues to deep reds. The atoms of these elements house even smaller, negatively charged electrons.

"When these elements are heated, such as by someone lighting a firework with a flame, the electrons become excited. This means they have increased energy resulting in them jumping from their original location (known as a ground state) to another excited state location within the atom.

"As electrons drop back down from their excited state, they release the energy they initially absorbed—in the form of heat and light. What is particularly interesting is each electron drop, and the release of light, is unique to each element.

"Atomically, bright blue and violet lights are highly energetic, the electrons have dropped a relatively long distance (albeit in tiny subatomic scales). Red light is less energetic, dropping shorter distances. This means that a Jedi's blue lightsaber is higher energy than a Sith's red lightsaber."
