  • Business in the Liberal Arts

About Our Program

Business leaders—from Wall Street to Silicon Valley—increasingly look to liberal arts graduates because they know they have skills that are coveted in today’s corporate environment. Surveys of top executives indicate they value what is taught at a liberal arts college, such as creative and critical thinking, the ability to work in teams, and communicating well. Our business in the liberal arts curriculum is rooted in the premise that a liberally educated individual will bring to bear multiple perspectives and deploy multiple strategies toward solving a wide variety of problems.

Successful, innovative business leaders come from all backgrounds. That’s why we don't view business as a standalone area of study; instead, you will capitalize on your strengths and interests — and build new ones — by pairing your study of business with another major.

Prepare for Your Career With Real-World Learning

  • Liberal Arts Advantage
  • Learning Experiences
  • Internships & Networking
  • Clubs & Organizations
  • Alumni Network & Outcomes

We believe that tomorrow's business leaders must understand their role within a business organization (both for profit and not-for profit) and how individuals interact within an organization, as well as be engaged citizens of the world. We've designed the elective portion of our major to ensure you graduate with the tools you need for success in business.

Every business in the liberal arts major is required to complete one course from three of the following four areas.

Social Responsibility

In order to become a successful business leader, you will need to be mindful of the full implications of your products and services, work environments, and relationship to your communities. We will require you to take courses that challenge you to think through all the implications of business decisions as well as evaluate the implicit values in the seeking of profit. We want our students who become future business leaders to be voices for more holistic decision-making that balances civic obligation, environmental sustainability, and profitability.

Social Context

If you plan to enter the business world, you must be cognizant of the social contexts within which all businesses operate. Courses that examine the complexity of society and social interaction, human learning and or personality will prepare you to be mindful of social contexts and, where appropriate, your place within them. Such preparation will help you appreciate the ways in which business functions internally as well as part of a larger whole. The courses available to students in this elective area address domestic and/or global social contexts.

Analytical Thinking

Business leaders must be prepared to confront new innovations that continuously arise in a dynamic world. To this end, we believe that you must have exposure to scientific and analytic methods and should be prepared to evaluate the costs and benefits brought forth by an innovation. The courses in this area inherently foster analytical problem-solving skills and will prepare you to make informed choices regarding innovations.

Global Citizenship

The high degree of global economic activity and communication that characterizes the world of the 21st century demands that those entering the business world come prepared for that reality. As a business in the liberal arts major, you will take at least one course that introduces you to global cultural, historical, or political economic issues. We want you to maximize the opportunities to familiarize yourself with global issues or particular areas of the world beyond the one course requirement.

Experiential Learning Component

The required experiential learning component of our business in the liberal arts major provides you with an opportunity to understand the critical questions confronting business leaders of the day. This can include an internship, Community-based Learning experience, or taking part in off-campus study.

Community-Based Learning

Community-based learning courses allow you to bring a business mindset to a good cause. You’ll apply what you’re learning in real-life situations, while also helping a local organization fulfill its mission.

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 7:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

Map shows area affected by earthquake centered in New Jersey

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter.

image-1.jpg

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake.

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said.

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out,"

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake.

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884.

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

School rating (community visitors).

  • Currently 4.50/5

Rating: 4.5 /5 (2 votes cast)

TrueSchools Ratings

School ratings are based on state standardized test scores and comparing those results to other schools in the same state. TrueSchools ratings range from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest school rating and 1 being the lowest. Ratings are meant to give an overview of a school's performance in the most recent state standardized tests TrueSchools has records for.

Each school's rating is determined by comparing it's test scores to those of other schools in the same state. Composite scores are determined by combining a school's results for each test and grade and weighting scores by the number of students taking each test. Tests taken by fewer than 10 students are not calculated in the composite score.

Private Schools & Schools Without Ratings

Private schools do not have ratings because private schools are not obligated to report their test scores to the public. Some public schools may not have ratings because either the school did not report its results, the results were incomplete or there was not enough data available to calculate an accurate rating.

Other Criteria to Consider

Keep in mind ratings are solely based on a school's performance on its state's standardized tests. Ratings do not take into account other important factors you should consider when evaluating a school. Such factors include class sizes and student-teacher ratios, the quality of teachers and amount of personal attention given to each student, school programs and extracurricular activities provided, amount of funding a school receives and how much is spent per student and other available resources. These are among a few of the qualities to consider when choosing a school to send your child to. [close window]
