THE BEST. I've tried many STT extensions. This one is awesome. Well integrated with the browser, loads text into the page when it can, easy copy button, activates the target after you copy, and TINY 66k! Only thing missing is punctuation/auto-cap.

Great and useful extension. Very responsive and accurate. The only thing needed is Punctuation marks (period, comma, exclamation mark, question mark).

Voice to Text (VTT), sometimes called Speech to Text, is more than just a useful feature. For those with hand injuries or disabilities that affect the hands, it's a lifesaver. Modern VTT technology is accurate and smooth-flowing.

It can accommodate accents, speech impediments, and even background noise. You can use them with any kind of microphone, including an internal laptop mic. Voice-typing is easier than ever!

These five Chrome extensions let you use your voice to type online and navigate the internet.

Lipsurf doesn't stop at dictation, it adds full voice control to Chrome. With this extension, you can fill in text fields, click buttons, navigate pages and tabs, and more. You only need your voice. When you first install it, you'll go to its Options page. From there, you can access an easy and quick tutorial.

Several helpful features make Lipsurf easy to use. You can easily select anything on the page with the Tags command, which applies a simple letter tag to every object. You can then name the tag to select the associated button, image, link, text field, or other item.

Lipsurf has a robust support system. The built-in Help command opens a contextual pop-up menu, showing support for the feature you're currently using. Any feature you could expect from a full VTT app is in this extension. This includes text formatting, custom shortcuts, and more.

Related: The Best (Free) Speech-to-Text Software for Windows

The Custom Shortcuts are how Lipsurf gets around individual voice quirks. With them, you can fix issues such as the extension misunderstanding the word you say. You can also speed up long-form typing by using Shortcuts . For example, you can tell it to insert a prepared paragraph promoting your website when you say “website plug”.

Lipsurf also has several helpful background features. For instance, it can automatically disable itself if Chrome isn't in focus. That is, if you speak while Chrome isn't selected, Lipsurf will ignore it.

2. Speech Recognition Anywhere

This extension from Sea Breeze Computers leverages Google Voice to Text. This is the same software that powers Voice Typing in Google Docs . It's lightweight and simple, focusing on text alone. If you still want to use the mouse for clicking and scrolling, it might be the solution for you.

Clicking the extension icon will open a tab for it. You need to keep that tab open for Speech Recognition Anywhere to work. Once it's running, the extension will automatically detect text boxes, including search bars. You can also use the Click On command to click things, but this is somewhat less reliable.

Like many VTT Extensions, this one offers a variety of language and accent options. Unlike many, it also includes a lightweight Text-to-Speech function. This allows it to double as a simplified screen reader.

Download: Speech Recognition Anywhere for Google Chrome (Free)

3. DictationBox

Dictationbox floating over the extension's homepage, with an example of its mail templates.

DictationBox focuses on long-form text rather than fillable forms or web navigation. It opens a floating box that takes down your dictation. It also has a one-click Copy button that selects all your text and copies it into the clipboard for easy pasting.

It also allows you to pre-format text, save it, and set up a command word to insert it. This is very similar to Lipsurf's Custom Shortcuts . You can further automate it using a bit of code.

For instance, if you add [*] into the template, DictationBox will select that bracket. Then you can replace it by voice typing. This makes it especially good for composing long-form text or fillable forms.

However, this extension is not a voice control extension. It can't answer commands like “undo” or “select [text]” or click “submit” for you. So, this extension is only recommended if you are still able to use the mouse and backspace key.

4. SpeechAgent

Speech Agent active on a Google Search

Speech Agent detects the active text field and allows you to feed dictation into it. Your dictation also appears in the Speech Agent pop-up. Lastly, there's a one-click copy button for cases when it can't find the text field.

This software works on a wide variety of social media websites. However, it doesn't work on Facebook or in word-processing programs like google Docs. Therefore, it's better for short-form communication. Like DictationBox, this extension focuses on removing your need to type.

You'll still need the mouse to click-activate Speech Agent and navigate web pages. But if you can use a mouse, Speech Agent will take care of the keyboard concerns. It doesn't accept speech commands like “undo” or “delete text” though, so you may still need to press the backspace key sometimes.

5. Voice In

Voice In is another dictation app from the developers of DictaNote , a note-taking app made with dictation in mind. Voice In is more polished and robust with its commands than some of the more lightweight options.

It starts you off with a quick four-step tutorial. When you dictate, your dictation appears in a translucent popup before it goes in the text box. The text in this pop-up is larger, which means this app could also be nice for those with vision problems.

It also offers custom shortcuts through Dictation Box. This is a premium feature, though. Premium users can also switch between languages with keyboard shortcuts and use Voice In on more websites.

However, the free version already works smoothly. It functions on Facebook, Reddit, and other popular websites, and integrates with email clients like Gmail and Outlook. As a bonus, Its gray microphone icon looks like a natural part of the Chrome window.

Start Typing With Your Voice

With a VTT extension, you can continue to use all your favorite websites, even when you can't use one or more hands. With all these options and how efficient VTT technology has become, you're sure to find an extension that works for you.

And of course, voice control is also a great option for your mobile device.

How to use Chrome's speech-to-text

Chrome 11 comes with a new feature that converts your mellifluous voice into surprisingly accurate text in the browser, and we've got a quick guide on how to use it.

speech to text for chrome

Google has introduced a way that you can talk to your browser, as long as that browser is Chrome. It won't talk back, but it will do your bidding. These instructions cover the basics of the new speech-to-text feature, which is functional but has yet to be implemented widely.

speech to text for chrome

First off, be sure that you're using Google Chrome 11 ( download for Windows | Mac | Linux )or later, and that you've got a microphone. Next, you have to navigate to a site that supports the new speech API. Currently, that's limited to Google Translate , which itself is limited to translations that originate in English. Expect that to change as site developers begin to implement the feature. One other hitch is that because this is a brand-new feature, it's also limited at present in Google Translate to translations originating in English.

So: Set Google Translate to English, then click the microphone that appears in the lower right-hand corner of the input box. Speak the sentence you want translated. When you're done talking, Google will automatically translate it. You can also use the site's Listen option (to the right of the text field) to hear what's the translation sounds like.

Web sites that currently use the speech API • Google Translate • Web2Voice , which demonstrates embedded video playback, control, and search • HTML5 demo Web site

There are currently some unofficial options for playing with the Speech-to-HTML API. The Web2Voice site that I discovered in a Chromium HTML5 Google groups forum has implemented basic YouTube compatibility using the new speech API. Click the microphone icon and say, "Green Lantern trailer," to search for trailers from the upcoming movie. If you click and say, "Play official trailer" it will play the trailer with those words in the title. To pause it, click and say "stop." To resume, click and say "play."

This isn't an official implementation, since that would appear on the YouTube site. But this certainly gives a strong indication of what the API is capable of. Unfortunately, having to click the microphone for every input is a bit of a pain. You might as well just click the pause button yourself. Also annoying is that the feature has trouble distinguishing between audio playback from the computer and your voice.

What this likely will be extremely useful for is accessibility within the upcoming Google Chrome OS. If you're spending you're entire computing time in the browser, as you will be in Chrome OS, and using the keyboard isn't easy for you, then having on-demand speech-to-command options are a must.

If you discover more options for the API, let me know in the comments below.

Right-click on a blank area in the pane and make sure both "View Disabled Devices" and "View Disconnected Devices" options are checked. If "Stereo Mix" appears, you can enable it by right clicking on it and choosing 'enable'. If "Stereo Mix" hasn't appeared, it means it's not supported by your system. How to use the voice commands list?

custom voice commands

The voice commands list allows you to insert the punctuation, some text, or run some preset functions using only your voice. On the first column you enter your voice command. On the second column you enter a punctuation mark or a function. Voice commands are case-sensitive. Available functions: #newparagraph (add a new paragraph), #undo (undo the last change), #redo (redo the last change)

To use the function above make a pause in your speech until all previous dictated speech appears in your note, then say "insert a new paragraph" and wait for the command execution.

Found a mistake in the voice commands list or want to suggest an update? Follow the steps below:

  • Navigate to the voice commands list [↑] on this website.
  • Click on the edit button to update or add new punctuation marks you think other users might find useful in your language.
  • Click on the "Export" button located above the voice commands list to save your list in JSON format to your device.

Next, send us your file as an attachment via email. You can find the email address at the bottom of the page. Feel free to include a brief description of the mistake or the updates you're suggesting in the email body.

Your contribution to the improvement of the services is appreciated.

Can I prevent my custom voice commands from disappearing after closing the browser?

SpeechTexter by default saves your data inside your browser's cache. If your browsers clears the cache your data will be deleted. However, you can export your custom voice commands to your device and import them when you need them by clicking the corresponding buttons above the list. SpeechTexter is using JSON format to store your voice commands. You can create a .txt file in this format on your device and then import it into SpeechTexter. An example of JSON format is shown below:

{ "period": ".", "full stop": ".", "question mark": "?", "new paragraph": "#newparagraph" }

I lost my dictated work after closing the browser.

SpeechTexter doesn't store any text that you dictate. Please use the "autosave" option or click the "download" button (recommended). The "autosave" option will try to store your work inside your browser's cache, where it will remain until you switch the "text autosave" option off, clear the cache manually, or if your browser clears the cache on exit.

Common problems on the Android app

I get the message: 'speech recognition is not available'..

'Google app' from Play store is required for SpeechTexter to work. download [↗]

Where does SpeechTexter store the saved files?

Version 1.5 and above stores the files in the internal memory.

Version 1.4.9 and below stores the files inside the "SpeechTexter" folder at the root directory of your device.

After updating the app from version 1.x.x to version 2.x.x my files have disappeared

As a result of recent updates, the Android operating system has implemented restrictions that prevent users from accessing folders within the Android root directory, including SpeechTexter's folder. However, your old files can still be imported manually by selecting the "import" button within the Speechtexter application.

How to Use Speech to Text or Dictation on Chromebook

The speech-to-text aka dictation is an accessibility feature on Chromebook that lets you type text with your voice instead of using the keyboard. Anything that you say will be automatically converted to text. It’s known by many names such as speak to type, voice typing, voice to text, and voice dictation. If you enjoy typing using your voice, let’s check how to enable, disable, and use speech-to-text on Chromebook.

Table of Contents

How to Enable and Use Chromebook Voice Typing

You can type using voice on Chromebook in two ways. Firstly, use the system-wide speak-to-type feature, and secondly, use the voice typing on the on-screen keyboard. Let’s dive into both methods.

Chromebook Settings Open

2. Expand the Advanced section from the left sidebar and click on Accessibility .

  • If you click on the microphone icon again.

Best Speech to Text Chrome Extensions

By Med Kharbach, PhD | Last Update: May 10, 2024

Speech to Text Chrome Extensions

Speech to text Chrome extensions are the topic of our blog post today!

Speech to text, or voice to text, technology uses the power of speech recognition to enable you to navigate the web using simple voice commands. Several platforms have already adopted this technology popular among them is Google Search.

With a single click on the mic icon in Google Search box you will be able to voice type your query as Google types it out for you. The same with Google Docs, you can use its built-in voice recognition service to voice type an entire article.

There are also a wide variety of speech to text extensions to use on your Chrome for voice dictation. Below are some of the best titles to try out. Using these extensions, you and your students will be able to use voice commands to browse the web the way you want.

You can watch videos, click on hyperlinks, switch between opened tabs and web pages, fill in forms, write emails and blog posts, and more.

Use Speech To Text In Google Chrome With These Extensions

Google introduced a brilliant speech recognition engine in Chrome 11, which uses Chrome’s speech API to translate spoken words to text. All you have to do is click the small microphone icon on a webpage and you can type in words with your voice. This can be really useful when you are dealing with form fields, when you don’t want to type all the data and can use the microphone to communicate with the browser.

For example, if you are using the latest version of Google Chrome, you will notice a small microphone icon embedded at the right end of the Google search box. Connect a microphone to your computer, click the icon and Google’s speech recognition engine will convert your voice to text. The spoken words will be automatically entered in the Google search box. Here is an example:

Speech to text in Google Chrome

Once your speech has been converted to text, you may notice a few aberrations, spelling mistakes or transcriptional errors. For example, “app” may be translated to “map” or “ever” may get translated into “clever”. That’s okay, just click the misspelled word and you can edit it inline or add more words anywhere into the sentence.

And yes, you can copy the entire text to your Windows Clipboard and use the transcribed text wherever you may want to. The following video shows how Dictation actually works ( also refer to the official guide here )

Alternatively, you can use the Speech recognizer extension for Google Chrome which does the exact same thing and has support for more than 32 international languages. The advantage of Speech recognizer extension is that it can be used to translate words other than English e.g German, French, Chinese, Korean, Russian. Although same in functionality and features, I would prefer using Dictation as it is more accurate.

What are the practical uses of using speech to text in Google Chrome? You can write long emails, fill out form data in various sites, type in tweets and do all sorts of creative things, sometimes for fun, sometimes for a change and sometimes for sheer productivity. It takes some practice to get into the swing of the app but once you have learned and mastered the operation, the experience is well worth it. Here are a few tips to use the Dictation app like a pro:

  • Pronounce clearly.
  • Do not speak too many words one after another.
  • Keep pauses between words.
  • Use short sentences and break up long phrases into smaller chunks.
  • For best performance, use the app in a quiet environment, preferable the music turned off.

Troubleshoot

If voice typing isn't working, try these steps.

If you find an error message that says "We're having trouble hearing you," try the following:

  • Move to a quiet room.
  • Plug in an external microphone.
  • Adjust the input volume on your microphone.

If you can't get the microphone to work on your computer, try the following:

  • Make sure that the microphone isn't broken.
  • Check your microphone settings in your computer system preferences.
  • Check that your microphone is plugged in and is not being used by another application.
  • Restart your computer.

If voice commands aren’t working, try the following:

  • Speak more slowly and clearly
  • Pause before and after each command. The text of your command might show in the document for a moment. For example, if you say "select all," the words "select all" show up before your text is selected.
  • The microphone shows a bubble containing the most recent command. Verify that Docs or Slides heard the right command. If not, you can simply say "Undo."

Voice to Text with Chrome Web Speech API

  • Speech Recognition

Since 2013, when Google Chrome released version 25, the support of Web Speech API opened up a whole new world of opportunities for web apps to convert voice to text.

With the demo below, you can use Google Chrome as a voice recognition app and type long documents, emails and school essays without touching the keyboard.

Implementation

You might be thinking “functionality like Speech to Text is pretty complex to implement.” Well, you’d be right if you train the speech recognition model from scratch. But thanks to Google, they already did the hard work for you, by utilizing the Chrome’s build in Web Speech API, you can turn your Chrome browser into a Voice to Text app. Let’s explore more detail below.

Folder structure

chrome voice to text project folder structure

  • images – contain mic images
  • languages.js – list of languages supported
  • web-speech-api.js – main application javascript
  • style – contain css style file
  • index.html – main html file

# Step 1 : Check browser support

speech recognition api browser support

As you can see above, Chrome is the major browser that supports speech to text API, using Google’s speech recognition engines.

You can tell whether the browser supports the Web Speech API by checking if the  webkitSpeechRecognition  object exists.

# Step 2 : Create speech recognition object

The next step is to create a new speech recognition object.

# Step 3 : Register event handlers

The speech recognition object has many properties, methods and event handlers. For the full list, please refer to https://w3c.github.io/speech-api/#speechreco-section

Below I would highlight the import parts for this application.

When recognition.continuous  is set to true, the recognition engine will treat every part of your speech as an interim result. When recognition.interimResults is set to true, interim results should be returned.

Let’s explore this recognition.onresult event below, to get more understand of what would be return.

web speech api result

The recognition.onresult event handler returns a SpeechRecognitionEvent which contains below fields:

  • event.results[i]  – the array containing recognition result objects. Each array element corresponds to a recognized word on the  i  recognition stage.
  • event.resultIndex  – the current recognition result index.
  • event.results[i][j]  – the  j -th alternative of a recognized word. The first element is a mostly probable recognized word.
  • event.results[i].isFinal  – the Boolean value that shows whether this result is final or interim.
  • event.results[i][ j].transcript  – the text representation of a word.
  • event.results[i][j].confidence  – the probability of the given word correct decoding (value from 0 to 1).

# Step 4 : Language selection

Chrome speech recognition supports numerous languages, If your users are speaking a language other than English, you can improve their results by specifying the language parameter recognition.lang

# Step 5 : Start recognition

By calling the recognition.start() , it activate the speech recognizer. Once it begins capturing audio, it calls the onstart event handler, and then for each new set of results, it calls the onresult event handler.

That’s it! The rest of the code are just to enhance user experience. It shows the user some informative messages, and swaps the GIF image on the microphone button.

The Web Speech API is very useful for voice control, dialog scripting, data entry. But at the moment among the major browsers, it is only supported by Chrome on desktop and Android phones. It would be good to see this great feature can be supported by other modern browsers in the future.

Thanks for your article, I wonder to know whether it supports to read a local audio file and convert into text? Or should I only to use Google Cloud Speech API to do this? Thanks!

I would suggest you to use Google Cloud Speech API

chrome cannot activated the microphone?

Chrome should be able to prompt to grant access microphone on laptop and Android Phones, if you are using iPhone, then only Safari browser can access microphone

Language detection in Chrome with built-in AI

Thomas Steiner

Published: September 24, 2024

Before translating text from one language to another, you must first determine what language is used in the given text. Previously, this required uploading the text to a cloud service. With inference on-device, you can improve your privacy story. While it's possible to ship a specific library which does this, it would require additional resources to download.

The Language Detection API proposal aims to solve this challenge by fine-tuning a model to this task, with an API built-in to the browser.

Example use cases

The Language Detection API is primarily useful in the following scenarios:

  • Determine the language of input text, so it can be translated.
  • Determine the language of input text, so the correct model can be loaded for language-specific tasks, such as toxicity detection.
  • Determine the language of input text, so it can be labeled correctly, for example, in online social networking sites.
  • Determine the language of input text, so an app's interface can be adjusted accordingly. For example, on a Belgian site to only show the interface relevant to users who speak French.

Use the Language Detection API

The Language Detection API is part of the larger family of the Translation API. First, run feature detection to see if the browser supports the Language Detection API.

Model download

Language detection depends on a model that is fine-tuned for the specific task of detecting languages. While the API is built in the browser, the model is downloaded on-demand the first time a site tries to use the API. In Chrome, this model is very small by comparison with other models. In fact, it might already be present given that this model is also used by Chrome browser features.

To see if the model is ready to use, call the asynchronous translation.canDetect() function. There are three possible responses:

  • 'no' : The current browser supports the Language Detection API, but it can't be used at the moment. For example, because there isn't enough free disk space available to download the model.
  • 'readily' : The current browser supports the Language Detection API, and it can be used right away.
  • 'after-download' : The current browser supports the Language Detection API, but it needs to download the model first.

To trigger the download and instantiate the language detector, call the asynchronous translation.createDetector() function. If the response to canDetect() was 'after-download' , it's best practice to listen for download progress, so you can inform the user in case the download takes time.

The following example demonstrates how to initialize the language detector.

Run the language detector

The Language Detection API uses a ranking model to determine which language is most likely used in a given piece of text. Ranking is a type of machine learning, where the objective is to order a list of items. In this case, the Language Detection API ranks languages from highest to lowest probability.

The detect() function can return either the first result, the likeliest answer, or iterate over the ranked candidates with the level of confidence. This is returned as a list of {detectedLanguage, confidence} objects. The confidence level is expressed as a value between 0.0 (lowest confidence) and 1.0 (highest confidence).

Preview the Language Detection API in our demo . Enter text written in different languages in the textarea.

Sign up for the origin trial

Register for the Language Detector API trial to start testing this API with your users. This origin trial runs from Chrome 130 to 135.

Learn more about how origin trials work .

Standardization effort

The Language Detection API was moved to the W3C Web Incubator Community Group after the corresponding proposal received enough support. The API is part of a larger Translation API proposal . The Chrome team requested feedback from the W3C Technical Architecture Group and asked Mozilla and WebKit for the particular browser vendor's standards positions.

Share your feedback

If you have feedback on Chrome's implementation, file a Chromium bug . Share your feedback on the API shape of the Language Detection API by commenting on an existing or open a new Issue in the Translation API GitHub repository .
