Using TED Talks to convey an important message or spark creativity might be more effective in teaching students than an individual agenda or preconceived notion of what should be said. Sample Motivational Speech for Teachers to Kick off the Year!

Summer is in full swing and with fall just around the corner, schools are busy planning back to school professional development events. Every year, school administrators need to find new ways to motivate and inspire teachers . It's important to start the year with excitement and energy, so below are some thoughts pulled together in a motivational speech that can be borrowed to motivate educators. I am a keynote speaker for over 10 education events per year and I find educators and support staff need inspiration more than ever.

Below is a basic script( not one of my own motivational speeches) that will build momentum in the school year

Motivational Speech for Educators

As we kick off the new year, many of you come here will new enthusiasm, excitement, and energy. 

Every new year you stand in front of your classroom, and you ask, how am I going to take this group from where they are to where they need to be?

Because every student deserves a great education. However, building people up takes energy, Building people up takes passion and grit. Building people up takes determination.

We've heard all of this before, and if you say it long enough, and if you say it with passion- people start to believe it. 

Many days you come to work when you don't feel like it -but you fake the enthusiasm and muster the energy anyways. Because you won't let your students down.

Teaching requires passion and joy . We know passion is contagious; Energy is contagious, Ambition is contagious.

We are grateful for the positive motivation you bring to each school year.

The most valuable thing we have is time and attention. If time is the most valuable and precious thing we have, it's also the most precious thing we can give. Every day you give that to a student, a student that may not get much of anyone's time or attention.

Today students spend too much time on technology, instead of connecting and building real relationships. 

However, when you talk about a world of instant gratification, there’s a problem with it.

If you grow up in a world where you are instantly gratified to do what you want to do, a lot of things that build success don’t require that.

Now we need to teach students delayed gratification, because If you don’t sacrifice for something you don’t value it.

One of the most important things we bring to the classroom is the work ethic. Are we working harder? Are we getting better?

Let’s teach students to solve problems , instead of looking for opportunities.

This year, let's bring the energy, passion, and determination back to our school. Students deserve the best education they can get, and we are prepared to give it to them.

Leaders Must Address Teacher Well-Being With Action, Not Just Self-Care Talk

By listening to educators and building supports that reflect their genuine needs and concerns, these leaders are shifting school cultures in ways that go beyond lip service.

There’s nothing wrong with boxes of sprinkle doughnuts and one-off stress management workshops. 

But they can give school leaders the illusion that they’re doing enough to improve teachers’ working conditions, offering “perfect self-care moments” to fuel teachers up before they return to the classroom focused and refreshed. 

As the demands of the job and the school year accumulate, crowded classrooms, heavy workloads, and the ongoing emotional and physical needs of students can lead to distress, exhaustion, or burnout among educators. Brief moments of self-care cannot alleviate these burdens, says Chase Mielke, a teacher and speaker focused on preventing teacher burnout . As a teacher, “I’m not going to breathe my way out of this one—I can’t,” Mielke says. “The massage is great during my planning time, but that’s still not going to change my perception of how the school’s culture treats me, how parents are treating me right now, how students are functioning and behaving.”

Meanwhile, principals around the country are exploring solutions that go beyond “ cutesy wellness ,” taking the responsibility of workplace well-being off teachers’ shoulders in favor of larger system changes within the school building. Among the leaders we interviewed, they too seemed tired of superficial gestures—and the term “self-care” now pushes everyone’s buttons: “To be just brutally honest, I'm tired of hearing about it,” says principal Mathew Portell. 

Genuinely supporting educator well-being is “less about initiatives and more about setting a tone that we approach everything collaboratively,” says Karen Bacigalupo, an executive principal at Fall-Hamilton Elementary in Tennessee. A healthy school culture signals to adults at all levels that they “have ownership, have decision-making power, and a voice in what the school community looks like,” says Jill Bohnenkamp, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine and faculty at the National Center for School Mental Health. “We’ve got great evidence that that shared approach really helps to foster a work environment that people want to be a part of.”

We interviewed leaders from California to Maryland about how they’re working to transform school culture so it’s collaborative, supportive, and, most important, sustainable.

Start With Teachers 

Effective teachers survey their students and assess their progress regularly. The same is true, Mielke says, of good school leaders: “If I’m not assessing the state of my culture, the state of how teachers are feeling, and I’m not responding to that, then I can’t expect growth and change to happen.” 

Multichannel feedback: Regularly assessing teacher well-being through one-on-one meetings or anonymous surveys is a good place to start, says Michele Lew, a California-based high school principal. The practice allows her to “see the themes and trends when it comes to what would be most supportive,” and respond accordingly. Former principal Adam Drummond suggests asking each teacher the same set of questions —including “What is the most frustrating aspect of being a staff member in this school?”—which helps identify overlap in responses and tease out priorities to act on first. 

In addition to keeping an open-door policy, Ryan Daniel, principal of Fort Foote Elementary School in Maryland, does daily morning walks around the building. It’s an opportunity to forge and strengthen relationships while also allowing her to provide impromptu support. “I not only want to see how everyone is doing and feeling,” she says, “but if something happened the previous day, I’m following up and checking in on that.” 

Basic needs first: Maslow before Bloom doesn’t just apply to students, it’s relevant for teachers too. “We know you can’t help others until you help yourself,” says Natalie Vadas, a special education teacher at Fall-Hamilton Elementary. “Sometimes you just need a minute.”

When Mathew Portell was principal at Fall-Hamilton, he implemented a “ tap-in/tap-out” system : Teachers submit a request via text message—no explanation needed—and within minutes two adults arrive; one adult takes over the class while the other checks in with the teacher. It’s been so successful that he’s brought it over to his new school, Goodlettsville Elementary, and the practice remains in place today at Fall-Hamilton. “We utilize it for basic needs, but also when teachers need time and space to regulate themselves,” says Karen Bacigalupo, Fall-Hamilton’s executive principal. 

Likewise, the essentials—like having time to use the bathroom and eat lunch— writes Sarah Miles , a former educator and now director of research for the nonprofit organization Challenge Success, are nonnegotiable, and leaders should prioritize scheduling time for teachers to meet basic human needs. This communicates that leadership prioritizes “stopping to fuel your body” and encourages staff to “take a break, slow down, see friends, and break bread together,” Miles says.

Found time: For teachers, it can feel as if the task conveyor belt never stops, Mielke says. Occasionally, leaders should allow the schedule to flex by identifying little windows of free time for staff to catch up on workloads. On days allotted to professional development, for example, Mielke says, some leaders allow half the day to remain unscheduled so that staff can use the time as needed. “That was in response to when leaders would ask staff, ‘What do you need?’” he says. “A lot of them said, ‘I am having a hard time keeping up.’”

Meanwhile, spending hours creating substitute coverage plans is often enough to convince teachers to just work the day—even when they’re in desperate need of a sick or personal day. One of Alex Shevrin Venet’s former school administrators carved out time for teachers to create emergency sub plans: “She gave us a folder, a format, and then set aside time during professional development in-service so that we could put everything together.” It wasn’t a perfect system, Venet acknowledges, because “the sub plans you make during in-service aren’t always going to be relevant,” but “it was really nice to just have the problem acknowledged.”

A parent sounding board: Communicating with families can be challenging for teachers and, especially for new educators, sometimes goes off the rails. Daniel encourages staff to seek her assistance as needed, whether it’s reviewing and editing a response to a parent or, occasionally, she’ll even craft a message on the teacher’s behalf. Staff also know they can BCC her on emails so that she’s in the loop and CC her when they need her more directly involved. 

When staff make a mistake while communicating with parents and caretakers, Daniel uses the opportunity to address issues collaboratively rather than punitively. “When teachers are wrong, I let them know, but we handle it together,” she says. “We apologize for the behavior and we learn from the experience. I never leave them hanging out to dry.” 

Adopt a subtraction mindset: When considering ways to improve a system, research suggests that people often default to identifying what they can add rather than what might be beneficial to remove . Gather the team together and discuss “what you can get rid of,” suggests educational consultant Michelle Blanchet . “Provide a space for teachers to talk about what matters to them—and what doesn’t—so that you can figure out how to spend time accordingly.”

For example, Daniel, the Fort Foote Elementary principal, has no qualms about nixing a meeting from the schedule if it’s not needed. She asks herself what is important at that moment and if staff “need a thought partner to unpack it.” If it’s information they can parse on their own, it becomes an email or is disseminated through her weekly staff newsletter. And when meetings drag on, she’ll often cut them short so that staff can make better use of their time: “You have to be able to read the room and know when their tank is full.” 

Treat Teachers Like Professionals

“A good principal never forgets what it’s like to be in the classroom ,” says Carise Echols, principal at Theodore Jones Elementary School in Arkansas. Likewise, a principal never forgets that educators inside the school building are skilled practitioners , writes instructional technology specialist Mary Beth Hertz. “The best way to appreciate a teacher is to appreciate the hard work that they do and their high level of expertise.”

Rethink dress codes: Alexis Neumann, the superintendent of Rapoport Academy Public Schools, doesn’t have a problem with staff wearing jeans to work . On many days, she joins them. “We’re not worried about what you wear,” Neumann says. “We’re really only worried about the learning that’s happening in the classroom. We treat our staff as professionals, and they respond as such.”

Erika Niles, principal of Green Trails Elementary School in Missouri, believes that teachers should have the freedom to dress according to their daily needs and preferences, and she addresses any issues that arise privately on a case-by-case basis. “The pushback I’ve heard is, ‘Well, what if they wear a Speedo?’ Quite frankly, I trust my teachers to make those professional decisions,” Niles says. “Teachers are professionals. They should be given autonomy and trust unless they prove otherwise. And then, it’s a conversation and not a reprimand. We are in this together.”

Include flexibility in PD: A lack of buy-in on professional development doesn’t just hurt teachers; the impacts trickle down to students, writes educator Sarah Elia: “Student achievement has been found to increase by up to 21 percent as a result of teacher participation in well-designed professional development.” As with any compulsory task, attaching a degree of independence helps , says middle school teacher and curriculum coordinator Heather Wolpert-Gawron, especially concerning “choice in what teachers can learn about and choice in how to learn it.” 

As an instructional coach, Mielke worked with school leaders to make professional learning opportunities more customizable. Teachers could opt in to create a portion of their own professional development hours; those who didn’t want to do that could follow a predetermined path set by the school leader. “We allowed a little bit of choice and set staff up; ‘Here’s how you can spend those 15 hours pursuing something that’s really relevant to you or that you’re passionate about,’” he says. 

The impact can be substantial: Before shifting to a more flexible, choice-based PD model, less than 30 percent of staff reported that professional learning “met their needs and supported them as educators,” writes Tracy Dabbs, a district coordinator of technology and innovation in Washington. Now that teachers have more say , that percentage consistently sits at 95 percent.

Protect planning time: When planning periods get consumed by meetings or administrative tasks, there’s a higher chance of teachers bringing work home, Mielke says, eroding the boundaries of work-life balance. There are ways to prevent this. After extensive preplanning with the master scheduling team, specialist teams including physical education teachers and library staff at Fort Foote Elementary coordinated a plan to move students between rooms while classroom teachers attended a 90-minute weekly collaborative planning block each Wednesday. “Second graders may have media for the first 45 minutes, and then they have P.E. for the next 45 minutes,” Principal Ryan Daniel says.

Fort Foote Elementary teachers know that if they have a problem on Monday or Tuesday, they have Wednesday to sit with their colleagues and troubleshoot. “If I’m a second-grade teacher, I have a third-grade teacher in the room, a first-grade teacher in there,” she says. “I’m able to bounce ideas off of everyone.”

3 Things Principals Can Do to Make Teacher PD Better

There is a wide gap between how teachers and school leaders view professional development. For many teachers, PD conjures up images of boring, one-sided lectures that have little to do with their classroom reality.

In fact, almost half of the 1,498 teachers surveyed by the EdWeek Research Center in October 2023 said they found their PD “irrelevant.” In stark contrast, only 16 percent of the 659 school leaders surveyed during the same period thought the same about teacher PD.

School leaders have tried different things to make the PD they offer more relevant and engaging for teachers. Some have encouraged teachers to pick a topic they’re passionate about, while others have moved mandatory PD modules online for teachers to complete at their convenience. Some school leaders believe frequent follow-up check-ins with teachers can help them apply what they learn in their PD sessions.

Still, it’s a struggle for school leaders to design the PD teachers want as they juggle district-mandated trainings and initiatives needed to meet their schools’ goals, said Brooklyn Joseph, a lead program facilitator with Lead by Learning, a program at Northeastern University where she partners with schools to design professional learning.

With all this information coming at them, teachers feel like they’re ingesting a lot of content that doesn’t always link back to their classroom practice, Joseph said during an Education Week K-12 Essentials Forum on school leadership last month.

Getting PD right isn’t just a time or resource challenge, Renee Gugel, an assistant professor of teacher leadership at the National Louis University in Chicago, said during the forum. To make PD fun and engaging for teachers, principals also need to build their own capacity.

“Sometimes, [the obstacle] is not knowing how to go about it,” Gugel added.

Gugel and Joseph made three key recommendations to school leaders on designing PD that’s useful to teachers. Their session can be viewed in the above video.

Surveys at the start of the school year are a good way to pick up information on the kind of PD teachers want. The challenge is that school leaders seldom share or reflect on the results with teachers, Gugel said.

“It can be hard [for school leaders] to share the results. Teachers are going to say stuff you don’t agree with or feel offended by, because you planned the PD [sessions],” Gugel said.

But if school leaders can be transparent about the feedback in staff meetings, it can signal to teachers that they’ve been heard and their concerns are being addressed. “It’s an immediate climate shifter,” Gugel said.

The information loop shouldn’t be restricted to surveys. Joseph recommends creating “design teams” of veteran and new teachers across grades and subject areas who can help school leaders plan PD based on past survey feedback. Teachers may respond to PD better if their peers help plan it, Joseph said, and design teams can help make these sessions more relevant to their needs.

“School leaders don’t have to plan all the PD by themselves in a vacuum,” Joseph said.

Teachers should also have the option to answer survey questions anonymously, Gugel said, if they are nervous about openly critiquing a PD session planned by their principal.

Strike a balance between teacher agency and a school’s instructional goals

Effective PD should focus on one or two key topics chosen by teachers, Joseph said.

“Just like we provide structures and routines for students in classrooms to do their own independent learning, once we allow that choice [to teachers], we find that they want to explore [more] about their instructional practices. [Teachers] have to care about what they’re learning,” Joseph said.

Gugel added that PD should be actionable—teachers should be able to apply practices they learn during PD in their classrooms shortly after the session takes place.

The PD that emerges from this process, though, should not be completely detached from the school’s instructional goals.

The process to find the best PD should be grounded in a school’s data, Joseph said. School leaders and teachers can look at test scores as well as internal school indicators like student behavior. Teachers and school leaders should look at these data together and determine areas for improvement.

By doing that, Joseph said, teachers have the agency to choose their own PD but are still guided by the school’s overall instructional goals.

Some school leaders can be wary of giving too much choice to teachers. Gugel warned against this: “When teachers hear that their school leaders trust them to use their [PD] time well, that’s motivating in itself.”

The most popular form of teacher PD

The most exciting form of PD, both experts agreed, is when teachers can learn from each other.

Teachers learn from each other informally through observing classrooms or catching up over instructional strategies in their free time. But Gugel and Joseph recommended that school leaders also create more formal PD spaces for such sharing.

Then, teachers can share their experiences trying out new teaching methods and discuss new patterns of student learning. For instance, teachers can use these spaces to drill down on specific tactics like how to best organize a classroom to encourage student learning in smaller groups.

These “collaborative groupings"—as part of smaller professional learning communities or larger PD sessions—can also help newer teachers get a feel for what’s going on in their peers’ classrooms, and how they can adapt some of these instructional strategies in their own teaching, Joseph said. This type of PD is a useful way, too, for veteran teachers to share their experiences, instead of spending time going over trainings they’ve already had.

Arranging this opportunity for PD might be yet another task on a leader’s to-do list, but Joseph said it’s worth the effort.

“We want to have a vision for where we are taking teachers,” she said. “But we also want to provide space and time for teachers to take us on a different journey … [to] the place where they are feeling inspired and passionate.”

Logies key moments: Larry Emdur wins Gold Logie, Sam Pang lauded for his opening monologue and Raygun makes a surprise appearance

Larry Emdur has taken out the Gold Logie for the most popular person on Australian television.

Sam Pang delivered plenty of zingers in his opening monologue and took aim at Olympian Rachael "Raygun" Gunn who made a surprise appearance. 

There were tears. There were cheers. There was plenty of laughter, and there'll be some tired people heading to work tomorrow following a lengthy ceremony.  

The Logies have wrapped for another year with the Gold Logie for the most popular person on Australian television going to Larry Emdur.

In his acceptance speech he reflected on 40 years in the business.

Emdur said he was television's most axed man and had experienced moments of doubt.

"I was so convinced that I wasn't going to win this that I said that if I did win it, I would have all the nominees' initials tattooed on my arse live tomorrow morning," he said 

"So, we'll see you on The Morning Show tomorrow morning."

He said while the ABC's Tony Armstrong was "Australia's boyfriend," he was "Australia's dirty, old grandpa." 

Earlier when Emdur won the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter, it was the first ever Logie win for the man who was Australia's youngest national newsreader when he first appeared on screens at age 19.

"This is lovely recognition," he said. 

"Recognition for me is usually someone yelling out on the street, 'you wanker, come on down.'"

Here are some of the other key moments from the 64 th Logie awards. 

Raygun makes a surprise appearance 

Raygun may have received zero votes when she represented Australia in breaking at the Olympic Games in Paris , but she was met with rapturous applause when she appeared at the Logies via video link.  

"Hello, Australia, Raygun here," the human meme/global sensation said.

"I just want to say congrats to all the Logie nominees and best of luck tonight. 

"Please feel free to pull out one of my signature moves in celebration.

"Have fun and look after each other."

Earlier in his opening monologue, host Sam Pang had a dig at Raygun after he said Australia's youngest-ever Olympics Gold Medal winner Arisa Trew's parents promised her a pet duck as a reward.

"Meanwhile, Raygun's parents have promised to get her breakdancing lessons," Pang said.

No holds barred in Pang’s opening monologue

It was an opening monologue that hit all the right notes when Pang resumed hosting duties for a second year.

"There was no guarantee that I would return, especially after some of the reviews last year," Pang said.

"The Sydney Morning Herald said I delivered a stellar performance. The Herald Sun said I had a sensational monologue and charmed a nation. And Sky News said stop immigration. Asians are taking our jobs!"

He didn't stop there. Channel Seven also copped it.

"Channel Seven, well, I'm just letting you all know I'm going to say whatever I want tonight," Pang continued.

"I stand before you safe in the knowledge that whatever I say, this network will defend me in court.

"And with their impeccable record in defamation cases over the last 12 months I reckon I'll be fine.

"Full disclosure, I'm not getting paid by Channel Seven tonight. Instead, for the next 12 months, they're paying my rent, which is handy as they'll know what address to send the Thai masseuse to."

Nine did not escape scrutiny with Pang taking aim at former chair Peter Costello, too .

"The incredible Sigourney Weaver, hey, nominated for The Lost Flowers Of Alice Hart," Pang said.

"Now, unfortunately, Sigourney is not here tonight. She's in hospital after running into Peter Costello at the airport."

Pang continued with the zingers. His targets during the monologue and later in the show also included:

• Larry Emdur: "Larry has an incredible connection with viewers trapped in nursing homes, hospital waiting rooms and the long-term unemployed. They're your people, Larry."
• Robert Irwin: "A win for Robert would be a fitting reward for his long, hard eight months in the industry." 
• Another Raygun barb: "Apart from our world-leading television industry, we're world leaders in mining, agriculture and of course breakdancing."
• Julian Assange: "This [reaction] here [is] from someone named Julian. 'After watching that opening monologue, I'd like to go back to the Ecuadorian embassy.'" 

Bluey fetches its third Logie for Best Children’s Program 

Without a doubt, Australia is great at making children's television.

As if to drive the point home, The Wiggles played a starring role in the ceremony before presenting the award for Best Children's Program to none other than Bluey.

Executive producer Daley Pearson said the Bluey crew were seated so far away from the stage, he didn't think they'd win.

"This is a genuine surprise," Pearson said.

"Thank you for letting Bluey into your homes and making the show that we make."

Tears for the boy who swallowed the universe 

The wholesomeness continued when Felix Cameron took out the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent.

It was the first Logie for the 15-year-old for a series that clocked seven million views globally in its first two weeks.

Overcome by emotion, Cameron used his 30-second acceptance speech to "try and thank as many people as possible".

"I'd love to thank Nadia Townsend, my drama teacher," he said through tears.

"I couldn't have done it without you. She had a saying that we were climbing a mountain.

"She never, ever clarified whether it was Everest or the Dandenongs but I think we got there."

Cameron also won Best Lead Actor in a Drama.

When Boy Swallows Universe won the Best Miniseries or Telemovie award, author Trent Dalton gave a rousing speech to mothers across Australia.

"I just want to send a shout out to all the mums who were a bit like Frankie Bell," Dalton said.

"And they're out in the suburbs tonight and they're feeling a bit lost in the darkness and I just want to tell you, please believe me when I say that when your children look at you in the darkness, all they see is your light. 

"Keep shining. We see you."

Rebecca Gibney inducted into the Hall of Fame 

It's among the Logie's highest honours.

But actor Claudia Karvan reminded the audience that Rebecca Gibney is only the fourth woman to be inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame since its introduction in 1984.

The others were Ruth Cracknell, Noni Hazlehurst and Kerri-Anne Kennerley.

Gibney's son Zachary Edison Bell gave a heartfelt speech ahead of introducing his mum to the stage.

"Please welcome the newest member of the TV Week Logie Awards Hall of Fame, my mum, Rebecca Gibney," Bell said to applause.

"If someone had told 16-year-old me who suffered crippling anxiety and severe body dysmorphia that one day I would be standing on the stage with this award, she wouldn't have believed it," Gibney said.

John Farnham tribute

Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy sang some of John Farnham's hits to honour the man known as The Voice.

Farnham has sold over six million albums in a career that has spanned 60 years. Finding the Voice was the highest-grossing Australian documentary of all time. He wasn't at the ceremony, but his doco won Best Factual Documentary Program.

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
