Good Morning to one and all present here! Today I am here to deliver a speech about education. It is usually a belief that education is the foundation for all-round development. Life is based on development and that developing and growing is life. If we describe this view into the perspective of education, we can sum up that education is the all-round development of the individual’s personality. Thus, education is nothing but all-round development of the individual’s personality. Education is a process of man-making. Hence, education is necessary for all.

Importance of Education

As per the report of the Kothari Commission, “the destiny of India is being shaped in its classrooms.” Education ingrain civic and social responsibility among everyone. India is a land of diversities. Therefore, in order to bring unity, education is a means for emotional integration. We cannot do without any kind of education. Education is an essential aspect of human development. Education is a means of achieving a world of peace, justice, freedom, and equality for all. Thus, education is extremely necessary for all. No good life is possible without education.

It indorses the intelligence of human beings, develops his skill, and enables him to be industrious. It ensures his progress. Education also channelizes the undeveloped capacities, attitude, interest, urges and needs of the individual into desirable channels. The individual can adjust and modify his environment with the help of education as per his need.

Problems and Prospects

In a democratic country, education is necessary for all its citizens. Unless all the citizens get education, democratic machinery cannot work well. So we may emphasize that the problem of equality of educational opportunities in Indian. This situation is a very formidable one.

Our education system is at cross-roads. The Indian constitution enacted that there should be a universalization of primary education. In the order of the constitution, it was indicated that compulsory education must be for all children up to the age of 14. The universalization of elementary education has been implemented as a national goal. ‘Education for all’ is now an international goal.

The main problems are finances. Rural-urban disparity due to illiteracy. Women’s education, economic conditions of backward communities and non-availability of equipment are some other major problems.

Strategies and efforts at the national and international level

Universal elementary education has run the formulation of the project “education for all”. The provision of article 45 of the Indian constitution is a noble determination for the universalization of elementary education. Big efforts have been made to reach the goal of providing elementary education to every child of the country through, universal enrolment, universal provision, and universal retention.

Our constitution is making arrangements for free and compulsory education with the right of minorities to establish educational institutions. As well as there are education for weaker sections, secular education, women’s education, instruction in the mother-tongue at the primary stage, etc. These constitutional provisions are nothing but our effort to achieve the target of the project “Education for all”.

Thus, in the end, we find that education is a significant factor for achieving success, building characters, and for living a wholesome and happy life. True education always humanizes the person. In this reference, “Education for all” has become an international goal for both developed and developing countries.

The Joy of Education and Lifelong Learning

I am happy to be here with you today. I remember when I was a university student. Like some of you, I had trouble deciding what my major should be. First I thought about majoring in economics. That way, if I couldn’t get a job after I graduated, at least I would understand why.

Then I thought I might major in physical education. I went down to the gym to lift weights, but the laughter made it difficult to concentrate.

I sampled some classes, but I didn’t always do very well. For example, I took a photography class. I just about went crazy trying to take a close-up of the horizon. The teacher in that class gave me an F minus. He said that giving me an F would be unfair to the people who failed normally.

I studied chemistry, but I thought that there were only four elements on the periodic table: earth, air, fire, and water. I thought that fire had three electrons in the outer shell.

I thought about studying math. It has been reported that 60 percent of Americans cannot do basic math. Sixty percent! That’s nearly half! But we shouldn’t laugh—and most of you didn’t, and I appreciate that.

Seek Learning

Seriously, I would like to speak about the joy of education and lifelong learning. Life is a test, and life is also a school. The Lord has invited us to seek learning. He said, “Seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.” 2 He commanded early Church leaders to “study and learn, and become acquainted with all good books, and with languages, tongues, and people.” 3

Three reasons why we should learn are to develop personally, to increase our ability to serve others, and to be prepared in all things. Brigham Young said, “Our education should be such as to improve our minds and fit us for increased usefulness; to make us of greater service to the human family.” 4

President Thomas S. Monson taught:

Your talents will expand as you study and learn. You will be able to better assist your families in their learning, and you will have peace of mind in knowing that you have prepared yourself for the eventualities that you may encounter in life. 5

Learning helps us to be prepared in all things. The Lord said:

Teach ye diligently and my grace shall attend you, that you may be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand;

Of things both in heaven and in the earth, and under the earth; things which have been, things which are, things which must shortly come to pass; things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the nations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms—

That ye may be prepared in all things when I shall send you again to magnify the calling whereunto I have called you, and the mission with which I have commissioned you. 6

Being prepared in all things includes being prepared for the world of work so that you can provide for yourself and your family.

It is a great privilege to study at Brigham Young University. You have the opportunity to learn in an environment that is consistent with the principles of the gospel. Being a student here is a position of trust. As you know, the Church pays for much of your education. You have the responsibility to study hard, to obey the Honor Code, and to prepare for future service. Hopefully throughout your life you will look back on your time here with fondness and cherish the memories.

On Pursuing a BYU Education

I would like to offer some advice as you pursue your education here. I hope that I don’t sound like Polonius giving advice to Laertes in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet— especially when I remember what happened to Polonius. I am not referring to the fact that he was killed behind the arras, but rather to the fact that over the centuries he has been portrayed by literally thousands of bad actors.

First, do your best in school. You might recall a story about a person who was asked to build a house. He decided to cut corners, use cheap materials, and do a poor job. When he was done, the owner handed him the key and said, “I’d like to give you this house as a gift.”

Attending the university is like that. You can work hard and do a good job, or you can cut cor-ners and do a poor job. Be fair with yourself by giving your best effort. I encourage you to work diligently, to learn a lot, and to prepare well for the future.

Second, do things to enrich your education, such as having a mentored-learning experience with a faculty member, publishing an article, doing an internship, working in BYUSA, or participating in a student club. Perhaps you can be a teaching assistant or a research assistant or participate in a performing group. BYU offers so many opportunities to develop and grow. When you look back on your education here, these extra activities will have special meaning.

You might participate in intramural sports. Personally, I’m not very athletic. I tell my students that I played football in high school. They had a play designed especially for me. It was called “Pencilneck Right.” You know how BYU uses the run to set up the pass? Well, Pencilneck Right was used to set up the injury timeout.

When I was in high school I was in the chess club. I tell my students that I had a rook on my letterman jacket. Do you know what it says when you walk around campus with a rook on your letterman jacket? “Don’t mess with me, pal. Checkmate!”

Third, give service. It is important to fulfill Church callings and to perform other service. Y-Serve, the Center for Service and Learning, located in the Wilkinson Student Center, offers many opportunities to serve in the community. Service is important for its own sake, and it helps you to keep a broader perspective and to stay balanced.

Fourth, make friends. Even though your classmates are not as good-looking—and not as humble—as you are, they are bright, good, and interesting people. The friendships you make here can last throughout your whole life and can be a particularly sweet aspect of your university experience. Take time to make friends.

When I was in high school I didn’t have many friends. Once I told my dad that the other kids were giving me a hard time about my religion. My father sat down next to me, and, in his fatherly way, he said, “Son, it doesn’t matter what race you are or what religion you are. There will always be people who don’t like you—because you’re irritating.”

Fifth, attend devotional and forum addresses and other events, such as academic presentations, concerts, plays, and art exhibits. These are wonderful opportunities.

Sixth, enjoy your university education. It’s exciting, fascinating, challenging, and fun. The secret to happiness is not to look forward to some future time when all your problems will be solved. The secret is to be happy today.

The Joy and Sweetness of Lifelong Learning

There is joy in learning. In some Hebrew schools a special ceremony occurs on the first day of class. The teacher places a drop of honey on the cover of a book and gives the book to the student, who licks the honey off. The symbolic message is that learning is sweet.

Learning can also be challenging. Sometimes the learning curve is steep. When we are acquiring new knowledge or skills, we may feel uncertain, and we may make mistakes. However, being stretched means that we are growing. If we ask Heavenly Father in prayer, He will increase our ability to learn and help us to overcome our challenges.

Hopefully your university education will provide a foundation for lifelong learning. As The Aims of a BYU Education describes:

BYU should inspire students to keep alive their curiosity and prepare them to continue learning throughout their lives. BYU should produce careful readers, prayerful thinkers, and active participants in solving family, professional, religious, and social problems. . . . Thus a BYU diploma is a beginning, not an end, pointing the way to a habit of constant learning. In an era of rapid changes in technology and information, the knowledge and skills learned this year may require renewal the next. Therefore, a BYU degree should educate students in how to learn, teach them that there is much still to learn, and implant in them a love of learning “by study and also by faith.” 7

The most important area of lifelong learning is spiritual learning. We seek answers through prayer. We read the scriptures regularly so that they become part of our lives. Reading the scriptures reminds us of the Lord’s commandments, the covenants that we have made to keep them, and the blessings of the gospel. Studying the scriptures also invites the Holy Ghost, who guides our decisions and helps us to learn. Elder Russell M. Nelson said: “Faith is nurtured through knowledge of God. It comes from prayer and feasting upon the words of Christ through diligent study of the scriptures.” 8

Regardless of one’s opportunities for formal education, a person can engage in lifelong learning. My grandfather was Jim Gordon. His parents were Scottish immigrants. He was only able to finish the eighth grade before he went to work. He drove a delivery wagon in San Francisco when he was a young man.

Automobiles replaced horse-drawn wagons. Later my grandfather became a mechanic. He brought books about diesel engines home from work, and he read them. Eventually he became the supervisor over all the diesel equipment for a substantial company. Although his opportunity for formal education was limited, he kept learning on his own. His most important learning experiences occurred when, later in life, he decided to enter the waters of baptism and to receive the blessings of the temple.

When my grandfather was young, he drove a horse-drawn wagon. However, his world changed. During his lifetime he flew in passenger planes, and astronauts landed on the moon. Your world will change too. Many of the changes will be positive and exciting; others may present challenges. Will you be prepared to meet the challenges that will arise during your lifetime?

We need to continue to learn throughout our lives. President Gordon B. Hinckley told graduating BYU students:

We live in a world where knowledge is developing at an ever-accelerating rate. Drink deeply from this ever-springing well of wisdom and human experience. If you should stop now, you will only stunt your intellectual and spiritual growth. Keep everlastingly at it. Read. Read. Read. Read the word of God in sacred books of scripture. Read from the great literature of the ages. Read what is being said in our day and time and what will be said in the future. 9

Personally, I love to read. I tell my students that my first job was as a proofreader in an M&M factory. You have your own patterns for reading. One thing that helps me is that my wife, Nadine, and I belong to a book group with some friends. During the school year we meet almost monthly. We take turns: a couple chooses a book, hosts the book group in their home, leads the discussion, and serves refreshments afterward. We have read books about a wide variety of subjects. I had never even heard of many of these books before, but I have enjoyed reading them very much.

In addition, I have always enjoyed words. When I was a boy and I would encounter a word I didn’t know, sometimes I would ask my father what it meant. He would reply, “Look it up.” My father usually knew the answer, but he wanted me to learn how to look words up. So I would open the dictionary that sat on the bookshelf in our living room and look the word up.

Later I wanted to learn more words. One summer my friend John Tanner (who later became a BYU English professor) and I worked as groundskeepers at the Oakland California Temple. On some days we would each write five words and their definitions on an index card and put the card in our shirt pocket. Then we would share the words and use them in sentences during the day. My favorite word from that summer was halcyon. It means calm, peaceful, tranquil, or golden. As we pulled weeds and performed other physical labor on the beautiful temple grounds, we would exclaim, “Oh, those halcyon days of youth!” Now, as I look back, I see that they really were halcyon days.

In our busy lives, how can we make time to continue learning? I believe in consistent, incremental progress—small steps over time. For example, one doesn’t learn to play the piano in a single day. One must practice daily for several years. After many small increments, one can eventually play hymns, popular songs, or classical music. Lifelong learning is like that. We need to schedule some time each day to study the scriptures. We can also regularly read a little in other books. We learn “line upon line” and “precept upon precept.” 10

Elder Dallin H. Oaks and Sister Kristen M. Oaks wrote:

There are few things more fulfilling and fun than learning something new. Great happiness, satisfaction, and financial rewards come from this. An education is not limited to formal study. Lifelong learning can increase our ability to appreciate and relish the workings and beauty of the world around us. This kind of learning goes well beyond books and a selective use of new technology, such as the Internet. It includes artistic endeavors. It also includes experiences with people and places: conversations with friends, visits to museums and concerts, and opportunities for service. We should expand ourselves and enjoy the journey. 11

Two Stumbling Blocks of Learning

There are two issues connected with learning about which we must be careful. First, learning can lead to pride. In 2 Nephi Jacob wrote:

O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish.

But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God. 12

President Ezra Taft Benson taught:

Pride is the universal sin, the great vice. . . .

The antidote for pride is humility—meekness, submissiveness. (See Alma 7:23.) It is the broken heart and contrite spirit. 13

Humility opens our hearts and minds to learning. By contrast, thinking that we already know everything impedes our learning. King Benjamin taught that a person needs to become “as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.” 14

Second, we should expect that at times apparent conflicts may arise between secular learning and gospel principles. “[T]he gospel encompasses all truth.” 15 At the groundbreaking of the BYU Eyring Science Center in 1948, President George Albert Smith said:

I want to say that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accepts all that is true in the world from whatever source it may come, with the knowledge that it originated with the greatest of all scientists, our Father in Heaven. . . .

And so I congratulate the students of this great institution [BYU] to think that you have all the advantages that the people of the world have, plus the advantages of faith in God, a belief in the power of our Heavenly Father, and His inspiration. 16

The Aims of a BYU Education states:

Students need not ignore difficult and important questions. Rather, they should frame their questions in prayerful, faithful ways, leading them to answers that equip them to give “a reason of the hope that is in” them (1 Peter 3:15) and to articulate honestly and thoughtfully their commitments to Christ and to His Church. 17

When human knowledge and the gospel appear to conflict, we should remember that human knowledge is limited. Eternal truth is not limited, but our understanding of it is incomplete. After this life, if we are worthy, we will understand all truth. Meanwhile, we seek answers to faithful questions. We study, ponder, pray, and have patience. We exercise faith in God. He blesses us with greater knowledge, understanding, and peace in our lives.

We should be humble about what we know and what we do not know. An angel appeared to Nephi. Nephi wrote:

And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God?

And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things. 18

We do not know the meaning of all things, but we do know that God loves His children.

God’s wisdom supersedes human knowledge. Elder Oaks wrote:

We are commanded to seek learning by study, the way of reason, and by faith, the way that relies on revelation. Both are pleasing to God. He uses both ways to reveal light and knowledge to his children. But when it comes to a knowledge of God and the principles of his gospel, we must give primacy to revelation because that is the Lord’s way. 19

We should also remember to put the gospel, not our academic discipline, first in our lives. Jesus said, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” 20

The Strength in Learning

This is a wonderful time to be on the earth. There are so many opportunities for lifelong learning. If we do our best and seek Heavenly Father’s help, He will strengthen us beyond our natural abilities and help us to learn. That learning will enable us to develop personally, will increase our ability to serve others, and will help us to be prepared in all things.

I testify that the gospel is true. Heavenly Father lives and loves us, and Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior of the world. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Education is a term that we have grown up listening to since we were kids. Right from the beginning of childhood, till this very moment, we have been surrounded by Education and its need and importance. We have always been told by our parents, guardians and teachers that Education is essential and we should all take it seriously. But let us first address the matter of what is Education?

By definition, Education is the systematic mode via which students are instructed, and imparted knowledge in a school, college or any other institutional organisation. This is the theoretical definition of what the term Education implies. However, in practice, Education encompasses a holistic and wholesome training and development of an individual. Education is how an individual possesses knowledge about various aspects in life, becomes empowered and acquires the ability to think freely and uniquely.

Education is imparted to us in kindergarten, high school and throughout till university. But even apart from that, our very own lives teach us lessons. It is via the experience gathered in living daily life, through which we learn some of the most important and toughest lessons about life and existence. Education is essential because it leads to the development of the mind and the intellect. Education can hence be defined as a mode which helps in the overall growth and framing of an individual’s personality and intellectual potentiality. Keeping this view of Education in mind, we can well conclude that it is an essential phenomenon, and each human being should have the right to access proper and definitive Education.

The primary objective of Education is to impart knowledge. Education also has its fair share in building the thinking capacity of people’s minds. Hence, Education supplies people with knowledge and facts and also encourages them to integrate that acquired knowledge into practical and professional lives via necessary training. Education, thus, also plays a primary role in supporting the economic, social and cultural sector of a country.

The need to learn, develop and implement is yet another goal which Education fulfils. Apart from imparting knowledge, people are also vested in civic and social responsibilities. Education makes people aware of their duties and what is ethical and unethical in life. Training also helps in emotional integration. In a literary community, there exist no petty issues such as meaningless and irrational conflicts and contradictions. An educated population knows how to co-exist and cooperate with their peers and colleagues. Hence, to attain world peace, justice, freedom and equality, Education is essential. Everyone should have the right to educate themselves and grow life.

For the various reasons stated above, everyone must get access to Education. India, as a country, is the second-largest in terms of population. Out of its total demography, more than half of the people form a part of the growing community, aged thirty and below.

Thus for a country that is filled with new and young minds, Education is essential.

The solution to make this country flourish and progress is to make Education free for every individual. More than half the people in our country go without receiving Education due to lack of money and opportunities. Only a privileged few people are capable of attaining proper Education and making positive use of it.

Hence, Education is significant. It opens up people’s minds and makes them understand, develop and grow. As fortunate individuals, who have the privilege of attaining proper Education, we should all gather together and make it possible for the underprivileged individuals to become entitled to their right to learning and achieving Education.

I want to conclude my speech here. I could convey to all the purpose, need and importance of Education in life.

Thank you very much. I am delighted to be here with you today. Thanks so much for the invitation.

In my first weeks as secretary of state in this new government I have been resetting relationships across the length and breadth of education.

I want to refresh old partnerships and grow new ones, not just at home but around the world too.

By joining forces in education, we can build new bridges between our nations.

And I want to set the record straight on international students. I know there’s been some mixed messaging from governments in the past, from our predecessors most of all.

And for too long international students have been treated as political footballs, not valued guests.

Their fees welcomed, but their presence resented.

Exploited for cheap headlines, not cherished for all they bring to our communities.

This government will take a different approach and we will speak clearly.

Be in no doubt: international students are welcome in the UK.

This new government values their contribution – to our universities, to our communities, to our country.

I want Britain to welcome those who want to come to these shores to study, and meet the requirements to do so.

Now this is part of a wider sea change here in the UK.

Under this new government, education is once again at the forefront of national life.

Under this new government, universities are a public good, not a political battleground.

While this government is committed to managing migration carefully, international students will always be welcome in this country.

The UK wouldn’t be the same without them.

Arts, music, culture, sport, food, language, humour – international students drive dynamism on so many levels.

And of course, their contribution to the British economy is substantial. Each international student adds about £100,000 to our national prosperity.

This impact is not just a national statistic. It’s felt in towns and cities right across country.

I’ve seen it in Sunderland, where I have the privilege to serve as a member of parliament. The city is home to almost 5,000 international students.

Many come from China, flying across the world to study at the University of Sunderland. I welcome their presence and I value their contribution.

And students from all nations add to the city’s buzz.

More footfall on our highstreets.

More laughter in our pubs.

More conversation in our cafes.

International students contribute so much to my home city, so much to our country. And they get so much in return. The UK is a fantastic place to come and study.

Every student who steps off the plane in Manchester or arrives on the Eurostar in London is a vote of confidence in our universities.

Students come because they know they will receive a world class education. They come because they know it sets them up for success.

Many go on to positions of power. Above the desks of leaders around the world sit certificates from British universities.

They, and hopefully many of you, will know the joy of living abroad, the excitement of discovering a new culture, a new perspective, perhaps even a new weather system …

While students may not come to the UK for our weather system, they do come for our rich and varied culture.

They know this is a country that sparks genius, that has birthed innovation to the rest of the world.

What better place to study science than the land of Charles Darwin, Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing?

What better place to study English than the land of William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Zadie Smith?

And what better place to study music than the land of John Lennon, Stormzy, Adele?

Students benefit from coming to the UK, and we benefit from them being here.

But I don’t see this as a hard-nosed transactional relationship. It’s not just about GDP, balance sheets or export receipts.

No. My passion is for an open, global Britain – one that welcomes new ideas.

One that looks outward in optimism, not inward in exclusion.

In my university days I made some wonderful friends who came from around the world.

They broadened my horizons, challenged my views, and pushed me to be better.

Students come and build bonds with their classmates – and friendships between students become friendships between countries.

That’s what education is all about.

A force for good in people’s lives, a force for good in our world.

A generation of young people who have studied abroad and cultivated friendships with people from different cultures – those ties make the world a safer, more vibrant place.

This new government is mission-led. And I am leading on the mission to break down the barriers to opportunity.

I am determined to make Britain the international home of opportunity.

So I want genuine partnerships with countries across the world in higher education and beyond.

We already have deep education partnerships with countless countries around the globe, and I want to build more.

From our closest neighbours, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, to major regional powers, India, Nigeria, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, important allies, the US and Australia, to world leading systems like Singapore and Japan, and many others.

Whether that’s through British international schools abroad, or cross-border collaboration on skills training.

School trips and scholarships, exchange programmes and language learning, policy conversations that span the early years to learners with special educational needs.

And I want our universities to work with their international partners to deliver courses across borders.

Education must be at the forefront of tackling the major global challenges of our time.

Artificial intelligence, climate change, poverty, misinformation, polarisation, war and instability.

Education puts us on the path to freedom.

Intellectual freedom. Economic freedom. Social freedom. Cultural freedom.

Through education, we can enlarge and expand those freedoms, we can show that government is a power not just for administration but for transformation.

The answer is partnership. And the answer is education.

As I close, I want to extend an invitation to all your education ministers to attend the education world forum here in London next year from the 18th to the 21st of May.

You can expect a rich exchange of ideas, visits to schools, colleges and universities, and enlightening keynote speakers.

This is a time of change here in Britain. A new age of hope. A new era of optimism for our country.

A place where once again education and opportunity are the foundations of a better society.

A place where our universities are nurseries of global friendships, as well as places of economic growth.

A place where new ideas are prized.

Where Harris stands on Israel, abortion, climate change, education and the economy

[Editor's note: An earlier version of this story misstated Harris' proposed 2019 climate plan investment levels. The correct estimate is nearly seven times more than Biden's current proposal.]

Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the Democratic party’s presidential frontrunner after Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid Sunday.

Most Democrats have backed Harris, who announced her 2024 campaign for president shortly after Biden penned a letter explaining his decision to exit the 2024 race. Depending on who you ask, Harris is viewed as a moderate or a progressive reformer.

A former prosecutor, Harris was elected San Francisco’s district attorney with a “tough on crime” message in 2003 and worked in that role for seven years. She became the state’s attorney general in 2011 and served until 2017, when she was elected to represent California in the U.S. Senate.

Harris launched her own unsuccessful presidential campaign at a rally in her hometown of Oakland, California in 2019. She dropped her bid for the White House and joined President Joe Biden’s ticket in August the following year. In 2021, she was sworn in as vice president.

Decades in the public spotlight and on the public record, here is what we know about where Harris stands on key issues:

Foreign Policy

As Biden’s second-in-command, Harris has largely stood behind his foreign policy positions, but there are signs she could be tougher on Israel over the war in Gaza than the president.

Harris has not given reason to believe she will deviate much from Biden on issues relating to China , for example. She is also unlikely to sway from supporting Ukraine. Harris said earlier this year that Russia has committed “crimes against humanity” in Ukraine over the last two years.

Harris has not directly opposed Biden’s staunch support for Israel, but has expressed sympathy for the more than 38,000 Palestinian lives lost during the conflict. She was one of the first high-profile members of his administration to call for an immediate temporary cease-fire in March. She acknowledged the “immense scale of suffering” in Gaza and said the Israel-Hamas war is a “humanitarian catastrophe” for innocent civilians.

Harris’ support for women’s access to abortions has been a focal point of her tenure as the country’s first female vice president. She embarked on a nationwide Reproductive Freedoms Tour earlier this year to draw attention to attacks on abortion access following the Dobbs decision . She attended her first stop in Wisconsin on Jan. 22, the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade .

Harris proposed federal protections that would limit state abortion restrictions during her first presidential campaign. Under her proposal, states would need to clear laws regulating abortion with the Department of Justice, which would need to confirm they are constitutional before taking effect, she explained in 2019 .

“How dare these elected leaders believe they are in a better position to tell women what they need, to tell women what is in their best interest?” Harris asked during a visit to a Minnesota Planned Parenthood clinic in March. “We have to be a nation that trusts women.”

Harris has traveled on an Economic Opportunity Tour this summer to defend the Biden administration’s economic policy and attack former President Donald Trump’s economic agenda.

While on tour, she touted legislation passed during Biden’s time in office, including the American Rescue Plan and Inflation Reduction Act . Harris has tried to emphasize that wage increases have outpaced inflation since the pandemic and made the case that Trump has plans to give more tax cuts to the rich.

“Donald Trump gave tax cuts to billionaires,” she said in a June social media post . “President Joe Biden and I are investing in the middle class and making sure billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share.”

The vice president has made clear that climate change is a key issue a Harris administration would seek to address.

While running for president in 2019, she proposed a climate plan with a $10 trillion price tag — nearly seven times more than the $1.6 trillion Biden has invested in addressing the issue. She also called for a ban on fracking.

As a senator, she co-sponsored the Green New Deal , which called for a dramatic increase in the production of renewable fuels, including wind, solar, and hydropower sources. The 10-year mobilization plan pushed for a transition to energy systems less reliant on generating greenhouse gases, which are the primary contributors to climate change.

Harris has been an advocate inside the Biden administration pushing for the president to forgive student loan debt , which became a staple of his domestic policy agenda.

As a senator, she co-sponsored Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ legislation to make two-year college free for all students and waive tuition for middle-class students attending four-year public universities.

At a Pride Month event last year, she criticized Florida’s 2022 “Don’t Say Gay” law banning educators from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity in elementary and middle school classrooms. Shortly after she announced her presidential campaign Sunday, the American Federation of Teachers endorsed Harris.

How a Second Trump Term Could Turn Up the Heat on Higher Ed

Higher ed wasn’t a top priority for Donald Trump when he first took office. But now that he and the GOP see attacking elite institutions and regulating colleges as winning political issues, a second term is likely to bring more aggressive policies.

For America’s colleges and universities and the students they serve, the four years of Donald Trump’s first term as president were fraught, defined by threats to international students, allegations of “radical left indoctrination,” free speech controversies and far-reaching attacks on fundamental institutional values such as diversity.

Since Trump left office in 2021, universities have continued to grapple with the legacy of his term and the movement it spawned. His four years in office helped to pave the way for the Supreme Court’s decision last summer banning race-conscious admissions. A controversial executive order spurred a cascade of state laws banning diversity, equity and inclusion programs and policies. Meanwhile, the rise of MAGA Republicanism spawned supercharged culture wars, entangling campuses and prompting some state officials to get increasingly involved in how public universities are run and what’s taught in classrooms.

Now, Trump is back and seeking another four years in the White House, and higher education could be in for greater scrutiny and heightened pressure if he wins. Higher education wasn’t high on Trump’s priority list the first time around, but an increasing anti–higher education sentiment among Republicans and sectors of the public has shifted the political winds. That could open the door to more radical policy options.

Trump has already vowed to “fire” accreditors and reclaim colleges from the “radical left,” called for the creation of a free national online university paid for by taxes on wealthy colleges, threatened to deport campus protesters and backed extending green cards to college graduates. The Republican Party’s 2024 platform , which Trump’s team helped to write, calls for closing the Education Department and creating more affordable higher education options, along with deporting “pro-Hamas radicals and [making] our college campuses safe and patriotic again.”

In a second term, Trump would also have a sharp critic of higher education as his No. 2. His pick for vice president, Ohio senator J.D. Vance, has been an unsparing critic of universities, which he’s characterized as being dedicated to “deceit and lies, not to the truth” and controlled by “left-wing foundations.”

Brendan Cantwell, a professor of education at Michigan State University, sees a systematic approach in Trump’s agenda and other conservative plans for higher education. They want to make “deep, structural changes,” he said, and “convert the rhetoric about higher education that we’ve seen on the political right into policy.”

“I see the possibility of one or more of these levers being used to fundamentally remake the higher education sector as we know it,” Cantwell said. “Federal policy is what facilitated the creation of the higher education sector that we know today, and it’s the federal government that can undo it.”

Trump’s potential return to the White House comes at a time when colleges and universities are grappling with numerous challenges, from declining enrollment and shrinking budgets to campus tensions and a drop in public confidence. A potential second Trump term would likely exacerbate those challenges, according to interviews with a dozen liberal and conservative policy experts as well as college professors and leaders.

Why? Because the decrease in public trust over the last decade has made institutions more vulnerable. On top of that, President Biden’s efforts to forgive billions in federal student loans have infuriated Republicans, spurring lawmakers in Congress and the states to get more involved in higher ed policy. The campus protests in the aftermath of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel and the ensuing war in Gaza added fuel to the fire , triggering congressional investigations and combative hearings with college leaders.

“There’s a good chance that higher ed could be front and center because it has made itself a target of populist frustration,” said Frederick Hess, director of education policy studies for the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.

Experts generally expect that rolling back policies put in place by the Biden administration and overhauling accreditation to allow alternative providers of college credentials to access federal financial aid would be among the first priorities for the Trump administration.

On the chopping block would likely be new Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ students, along with Biden’s new income-driven repayment program that lowered monthly payments for millions of borrowers. A second Trump administration could also seek to scrutinize foreign funds that flow to colleges.

The agenda for a potential second term is in some ways similar to the first. The Betsy DeVos–led Education Department rolled back Obama-era policies that would have held for-profits accountable, stepped up enforcement of a federal law that requires colleges and universities to report foreign gifts and contracts, and rewrote the Title IX regulations, leaving a controversial legacy that hasn’t stood the test of time. Few of those changes have survived the Biden administration.

DeVos also criticized colleges and faculty members for telling students “what to think,” a claim higher education leaders have pushed back on. “They say that if you voted for Donald Trump, you’re a threat to the university community,” she said in a February 2017 speech. “But the real threat is silencing the First Amendment rights of people with whom you disagree."

Trump himself derided “radical left indoctrination” at elite institutions. He also threatened to review the tax-exempt status of nonprofit colleges and universities and to cut off federal funding to the University of California, Berkeley, for allegedly restricting the speech of conservative speakers. His Education Department discouraged the use of race in college admissions decisions and investigated Princeton University in fall 2020 after its president acknowledged that institutional racism exists on the campus.

But the first Trump administration was considered disorganized and chaotic. The Education Department struggled to run loan forgiveness programs such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Under that program, created in 2007, borrowers who work in public service jobs such as teaching can get their loans discharged after making payments for 10 years. Borrowers first became eligible for relief in September 2017—nearly a year into Trump’s first term—but few individuals received forgiveness.

This time around, the Trump team will be more prepared to govern. To assist in that effort, the conservative Heritage Foundation has spearheaded an effort known as Project 2025 to recruit and train employees to serve in the administration and provide a blueprint to radically reshape the federal government, higher education policy included. Trump has recently tried to distance himself from Project 2025, although several of its proposals—abolishing the Education Department, for one, and rescinding Biden’s Title IX rule—overlap with his own agenda and the party’s platform. Further, several former officials who worked in the DeVos-led department helped write the Education Department section of Project 2025.

“The incoming Trump administration will be more radical in what they want to do and hit the ground more quickly in what levers they want to pull,” said Amy Laitinen, senior director for higher education at New America, a left-leaning think tank. “That’s a bad combination.”

Shifting Political Winds

Before Trump took office, 57 percent of Americans had either a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in higher education, according to Gallup. Now, only about 36 percent of Americans express confidence, and the drop is starker among Republicans. A June Gallup survey found that 20 percent of Republicans are confident in higher education—a 36-point drop since 2015.

“I haven’t seen the public view higher education this negatively in my lifetime,” said Andrew Gillen, a research fellow at the conservative Cato Institute’s Center for Educational Freedom. “I think you could get a lot more support for something that the universities would have been able to brush off in the past. I think they are going to have a much harder time now.”

Policy ideas on the table range from the likely—rewriting or reversing the Biden administration’s regulations—to the more radical and far-fetched, like getting rid of the Education Department. More threats to tax institutions and strip their federal funding are expected.

“What should worry the higher ed community and the progressives is that the extent that Biden gets away with rewriting so many of the rules and laws around federal student aid is that you have created a landscape where I think it’s possible that a Trump administration would no longer feel particularly constrained by the letter of the law,” Hess said.

Republicans have already proposed bills to charge wealthy colleges for unpaid student loans and use that money for students in short-term workforce training programs. Lawmakers will likely redouble their efforts to restrict institutions’ diversity, equity and inclusion policies and penalize those that they find to be insufficiently protecting Jewish students.

Jason Delisle, a nonresident senior policy fellow at the Urban Institute’s Center on Education Data and Policy, said it all represents a sea change for Republicans. They used to take a hands-off approach to higher education and view a college degree as a pathway to good jobs and a way to grow the economy, he said, which justified the necessary federal investment. Now, “that calculus is gone from the thinking of most Republicans.”

The new thinking is reflected in a sweeping plan to overhaul higher education introduced earlier this year that would put colleges on the hook for unpaid student loans, use graduates’ earnings to evaluate programs and link some funding for institutions to their student outcomes, among other proposals aimed at lowering the cost of college and holding institutions accountable. The legislation, known as the College Cost Reduction Act, has 145 co-sponsors.

“The most interesting thing is the change among folks on the right, and I think I count the Trump people in this, for their skepticism of higher education—the skepticism of the value of it, their skepticism of culture war—in a way that did not exist in 2016,” said Delisle.

If Republicans control the House or Senate—or both—will likely continue to investigate campus antisemitism and hold hearings to question college presidents while branching out to other hot-button issues as well. Some higher education groups and advocacy organizations have argued that the hearings and investigations, which have included requests for troves of internal documents and communications from the targeted universities, have echoes of the McCarthy era and threaten academic freedom and institutional autonomy.

“If they were smart, they would double down on the culture war stuff. It works for them,” said Laitinen. “But they don’t need to do the policy. They can get the same wind [in their sails] from press conferences and hearings … The bully pulpit is enough for what they want to do.”

What Trump can accomplish on policy will depend in part, of course, on whom he picks to run the Education Department, if it survives. If the agency is staffed with populists and Trump loyalists, some observers predict a greater focus on culture war issues designed to rile up voters rather than substantive policy.

That group, Hess at AEI said, would be “more hard-charging and much less concerned about ruffling feathers.”

“These are people who thrive on the attack, but … the populist wing is not people who spent a lot of time worrying about the particulars of 400 Maryland Avenue,” Hess said, referring to the address of the Education Department. “They aren’t policy wonks. So part of the challenge is can they find policy wonks to help them figure out how to translate what they want to do into change.”

The scrutiny on higher education and culture wars could elevate the profile of the education secretary. The gig has not typically gone to ambitious politicians. But it could now be more attractive for someone interested in launching a bid for Senate or the White House in 2028, or at least to someone with a background in—and an agenda for—higher education policy.

“Certainly, education looms large enough, given the degree to which our ideological clashes are cultural. It could be a real opportunity for somebody who wants to set themselves up,” Hess said.

Can Institutions Fight Back?

The potential second Trump administration comes as university leaders, who pushed back on Trump’s policies and rhetoric in the first term, are bruised and battered. Already, some have signaled that they’re less willing to engage in political fights going forward. Harvard University, for example, said in May that it will no longer make statements on political issues. But the stakes for colleges and universities couldn’t be higher, and some leaders are already calling for stiffened spines in anticipation of what may be coming.

Underpinning the potentially sweeping policy changes is an anti-intellectual agenda that’s an “assault on the mission of higher education” and promises to usher in “a much more dangerous period” than the first term, said Patricia McGuire, president of Trinity Washington University and an outspoken critic of the Trump administration.

“Everything else is details that we will learn to live with,” she said. “I hope that my colleagues as presidents don’t get distracted by the bureaucratic agenda, because bureaucracies are all always with us. It doesn’t matter what the name of the bureaucracy is.”

While “higher education is the counterweight to government,” McGuire said, the academy can’t serve in that role without academic and intellectual freedom, which some officials are aiming to restrict. “If we don’t preserve academic freedom, that’s the ball game,” she said.

McGuire and others say that at a time when traditional higher education is threatened, they are worried that university leaders will stand on the sidelines rather than fighting back. They point out that when Florida governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican who briefly ran for president, made a number of reforms to the state’s colleges and universities and orchestrated a conservative takeover of the New College of Florida, no presidents in Florida spoke out.

“We’re caving in on our values without any fight,” McGuire said. “This is what bothers me more than anything else, and it tells me that we’re not ready for a second Trump term. Because it’s going to come fast and furious, and most of higher ed is going to lay down and hope it goes away. And it’s not going to go away.”

Keith Curry, president of Compton College, a community college, said he learned from the first term the importance of staying focused on his college’s mission to support students while standing up for them. No matter what happens in November, he said he’ll keep doing just that. “We have to be unapologetic, regardless of who is the president of the United States,” he said.

Curry acknowledged that not all college leaders are in a position to speak out, and that doing so is more difficult after Trump’s first term and the intensifying criticisms from state and federal lawmakers in the years since. Curry said some leaders are nervous and concerned, but “we gotta be thinking about what’s best for our students and how we stand up for our students. For some leaders, standing up for them and being unapologetic, some of us could actually lose our jobs.”

Trump’s first term amped up the age-old criticisms of “liberal” universities, putting them in the middle of contentious debates over what students are taught. The prime example was an executive order banning the promotion of so-called divisive concepts in federally funded programs, which disrupted campus diversity programs. State leaders responded with bans on what they called critical race theory and diversity, equity and inclusion programs. So far, 14 states have passed laws restricting DEI policies and offices on college campuses—legislation based on that 2020 executive order.

“It was a big signal that this was potentially fruitful ground for Republicans, and of course, it rippled out in a pretty significant way,” said Steven Brint, a professor of sociology and public policy at the University of California, Riverside.

Kaleb Briscoe, an assistant professor of adult and higher education at the University of Oklahoma who studies campuses’ racial climates and hate crimes, and other experts say the attacks on DEI and Trump’s time in office inflamed tensions on some campuses and spurred an increase in bias-related incidents, such as students leaving nooses around campuses or wearing blackface.

“We have not recovered within higher education,” she said, “and it would be catastrophic if he had another term.”

Those are two of the top takeaways from a new survey by Cengage Group, the education-technology company. The 2024 Cengage Group Employability Report is based on surveys of 1,000 U.S. employers and 974 recent graduates who received a 2- or 4- year degree and/or a skills certification within the last year.

The survey revealed some good news for higher education in general, countering the prevailing narrative that the general public is increasingly questioning whether going to college is worth it. It found that 73% of recent graduates viewed their education as being of good value, up from just 52% in 2023, 68% in 2022, and 56% in 2021.

The survey also showed a growing recognition among graduates about the importance of post-secondary education for career success. Two-thirds (68%) believe their education has positioned them for success in the current job market.

More than half of grads said a college degree or certification is necessary to perform their job, up from 42% in 2023. This belief was held by 63% of bachelor’s degree holders and 54% of those with graduate degrees. It was also relatively high among vocational training grads (56%), online certification recipients (51%) and those with a combination of higher education and online certification (54%).

Employers agreed as well, with 4 in 5 (79%) believing a degree still holds value for entry-level workers, and 70% believing a degree is a strong indicator of career readiness.

“Our 2024 Employability Report reveals post-secondary education is experiencing a pivotal moment,” said Michael Hansen, CEO of Cengage Group, in a news release . “The increased satisfaction among graduates and their improved perception of education’s value are encouraging signs that educators are listening and responding to the needs of both students and employers. As we continue to bridge the gap between education and employment, we’re not just preparing students for jobs – we are empowering them to build successful, adaptable careers in an ever-changing market.”

Nonetheless, 70% of graduates believe basic generative AI training needs to be integrated into their courses, and 55% said their degree programs did not adequately prepare them to use new technology tools in the workforce. Gen-Zers were most likely to feel this way (61%) compared to 48% of Millennials, 60% of Gen-Xers, and 50% Baby Boomers.

The rise of AI and other technologies also has recent graduates worried about their career choices, with more than 39% fearing that generative AI could replace them entirely. Employers reinforced this view with more than half (58%) saying they were more likely to interview and hire applicants with AI experience.

“The rapid adoption of GenAI in the workplace presents both a challenge and an opportunity,” added Hansen, in the release. “The data supports the growing need for institutions to integrate GenAI training and professional skills development. In doing so, institutions will not only enhance their value proposition but also play a critical role in shaping a workforce ready for the challenges of tomorrow.”

Good morning fellow students, teachers, and other faculty members. Today, I am standing before you to present a speech on education.

We all know that education is the magic pill to personal and professional success. To acknowledge the significance of education in our lives, let us first understand the definition of education. Education is learning new things, unlearning wrong information, and exploring the world around us. Therefore, it is a guiding light that helps us become better versions of ourselves.

Our learning process begins at home with our parents and family members. Then we enter the formal education system in school. Our school is the most significant place where the magic of education happens. In our school, our teachers are like magicians who guide us through the wonders of learning. They help us understand numbers, explore words, unearth history, experiment with the mysteries of science, and explore the world around us.

Knowing how pivotal education is important for us, we cannot imagine a world without education. If there is no learning in our lives, we will not be able to read, write, or communicate effectively. Thus, we can safely say that education arms us with the power to share ideas, understand society, and express ourselves. Thus, it helps us to become good citizens who contribute to our country’s growth.

Also, education helps us become kind and respect others. It also encourages us to become effective team members. These values shape us into empathetic and responsible humans. As we learn, we not only gain knowledge but also develop the skills to face the world with confidence.

We must remember that education is a privilege. Therefore, we must make the most of it. So, let us appreciate our educational institutions, teachers, and learning opportunities. Therefore, we must embrace all the possibilities that education opens for us.

In an energized 1st campaign speech, Harris makes her pitch for 2024

Vice President Harris has been out on the campaign trail countless times over the last year, but in Milwaukee on Tuesday, she was stumping, for the first time, as a presidential candidate.

The song “Freedom” by Beyoncé played as Harris greeted an excited crowd, holding up white and blue signs that read “Kamala” and chanting her name.

“So, Wisconsin, I am told, as of this morning, that we have earned the support of enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination,” she said through applause.

“I am so very honored,” Harris added. “I pledge to you I will spend the coming weeks continuing to unite our party so that we are ready to win in November.”

Harris’ speech marks the first campaign event she’s held since President Biden ended his campaign on Sunday. It comes as Democratic leaders have largely rallied around Harris to be the nominee as they launch a new party ticket just weeks ahead of their convention and around 100 days until Election Day.

Harris dedicated the beginning of her remarks to thanking Biden, praising both his presidential record and decades-long political tenure. The president is expected to deliver a primetime address on his decision to drop out of the race Wednesday evening.

“It has truly been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve as vice president to our president, Joe Biden,” she said.

“Joe's legacy of accomplishment over his entire career and over the past three and a half years is unmatched in modern history,” Harris added. “In one term as president, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who served two terms in office, and I know we are all deeply, deeply grateful for his continuing service to our nation.”

The campaign event in Milwaukee comes less than a week after Republicans gathered downtown for their own party convention – where former President Donald Trump officially accepted the GOP nomination and selected his running mate, Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance.

Trump has already ramped up verbal attacks on Harris on social media, criticizing her intelligence and mannerisms. The Trump campaign is also attempting to link Harris to Biden’s record on immigration and rising prices — key parts of Republican messaging to voters.

But on Tuesday in Milwaukee, the vice president didn't shy away from going on the offensive against the former president. Referencing her work as a prosecutor before entering elected office, she likened Trump’s legal woes to cases she worked on.

“I took on perpetrators of all kinds — predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain,” she said. “So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump's type.”

Harris also reflected on the momentum her campaign has had since launching, highlighting their record-breaking grassroots fundraising. In just over one day after she announced, her campaign recorded raising $100 million.

“Because we are a people-powered campaign,” she said. “That is how you know we will be a people-first presidency.”

Broadly ticking through her policy platform, Harris argued her campaign offers a vision of the future of the country, stressing the need for affordable health care, child care and paid family leave. She also raised issues she’s repeatedly championed throughout Biden’s presidency, including curbing gun violence and safeguarding reproductive access.

“We have to remember the shoulders on which we stand — generations of Americans before us led the fight for freedom. And now, Wisconsin, the baton is in our hands,” Harris said.

With Vice President Kamala Harris poised to replace President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.
