If you want to win more interviews and job offers, you need to have a keyword-optimized resume. There are two ways to find the right keywords:

Here's how it works:

Highlight Reels: A Proven Way To Start Your Resume And Win More Jobs

The Highlight Reel is exactly what it sounds like.

It's a section at the top of your resume that allows you to pick and choose the best and most relevant experience to feature right at the top of your resume.

It's essentially a highlight reel of your career as it relates to this specific role! I like to think about it as the SportsCenter Top 10 of your resume.

The Highlight Reel resume summary consists of 4 parts:

  • A relevant section title that ties your experience to the role
  • An introductory bullet that summarizes your experience and high level value
  • A few supporting “Case Study” bullets that illustrate specific results, projects, and relevant experience
  • A closing “Extracurricular” bullet to round out your candidacy

Customer Service Resume Summary Example

The next two bullets are “Case Studies” of specific results they drove at their company. Finally, their last bullet focuses on a volunteering stretch project that led to some amazing results.

This candidate has provided all of the info any employer would want to see right at the very top of their resume! The best part is, they can customize this section for each and every role they apply for to maximize the relevance of their experience.

While the content in this example is a bit more light, you can see all of the elements of a great Highlight Reel (especially the emphasis on measurable outcomes and results!).

Bullets make up the majority of the content in your resume. If you want to win, you need to know how to write bullets that are compelling and value-driven.

Unfortunately, way too many job seekers aren't good at this. They use fluffy, buzzword-fill language and they only talk about the actions that they took rather than the results and outcomes those actions created.

The Anatomy Of A Highly Effective Resume Bullet

If you apply this framework to each of the bullets on your resume, you're going to make them more compelling and your value is going to be crystal clear to the reader. For example, take a look at these resume bullets:

❌ Responsible for increasing client satisfaction rates. 

✅ Improved customer satisfaction rates by 15% in 6 months through proactive communication and timely issue resolution, boosting retention and revenue. 

The second bullet makes the candidate's value  so much more clear, and it's a lot more fun to read! That's what we're going for here.

In the past, customer service was my jam. I loved working the service desk because each day brought new challenges, allowing me to flex and develop my customer service skills. If you’re a customer service representative, you know how technical and specialized your job can be.

And, you need a resume that speaks directly to your skills and training. Not any resume will do, though. A generic resume leaves out critical information that signals to the hiring manager that you are the right fit for the role and what unique value you can bring to the role.

Let’s look at the elements of a customer service representative resume, so you can understand how to best highlight your skills for your own resume.

1. Professional Summary

There’s debate on if a summary is a necessary element of your resume. In my opinion, if you’re applying for a role within customer service, you need a quick summary. Customer service duties vary from one position to the next, so summarizing your skills and work experience can be a great way to showcase your expertise.

2. Contact Information

Theoretically, when a hiring manager reviews your application, they most likely have all your materials in hand, including your application, resume, and cover letter. But this doesn’t mean you should skip adding your contact information to your resume.

Think of your resume as your calling card. Adding your contact information to your resume makes it easier for the hiring manager and eliminates potential frustration from the need to search for your info.

I cannot stress this enough: make sure your contact information is easy to find.

3. Professional Experience

The professional experience section of your resume is your place to explain your past work history. Be careful not to over explain your work history, though, as space is limited on your resume.

4. Education and Training

Depending on the role within customer service, the position might require an advanced degree or technical training. Be sure to include this information on your resume. You can also mention any relevant achievements in this section, like awards or certifications you may have received.

5. Key Skills

Recruiters only spend about six to eight seconds looking at your resume. That’s not a lot of time, so it’s safe to say most recruiters skim resumes without initially looking at them too closely.

One section of your customer service representative resume should highlight your skills that are relevant to the job description. Matching your skills to the job description helps recruiters quickly understand your qualifications. Plus, with the increasing use of AI for applicant screening, matching your skills to the job description is a must.

5 Customer Service Representative Resume Writing Tips

Here are tips to help you craft a winning resume that will increase your chances of landing an interview.

Tip # 1: Write a compelling resume introduction

Recruiters have to go through several resumes every single day. They might even read dozens of them before they finally get to yours. The fact that they all look almost the same doesn’t help. Make your resume stand out with a brief introduction .

Keep your introduction short ⁠— two or three sentences max. You can use this section to display your :

  • Professional summary.
  • Professional profile.
  • Career goals and objectives.

Remember that this is a snapshot of you as an applicant ⁠— what are your career goals? Why do you want a job in customer service? What do you bring to the table?

Tip # 2: Avoid using generic language

Generic buzzwords tend to feel more like fluff, and they don’t tell hiring managers anything they haven’t heard before. They don’t provide much relevant information about your skills and previous achievements. You should avoid stock phrases and cliches like:

  • Result-oriented
  • Hardworking

Use action words that actually showcase what you’ve done. Try using:

  • Restructured

Tip # 3: Keep your entries short and straight-to-the-point

Your prospective employer will spend mere seconds looking at your resume before deciding to grant you an interview or not. Writing never-ending walls of text in each section of your resume won’t do you any favors. You need to make it skimmable and easy-to-read. This way, you’ll allow the hiring manager to come to a quick decision about your application.

Use bullet points to describe your previous responsibilities — three to six per entry should suffice. The older the position, the fewer bullets it should get. This will give you more space to talk about your most recent experience. ‌

Remember to use active voice exclusively throughout your resume to keep your sentences concise. If you have an entry like:

  • “The problem was solved by me.”

Use active voice instead, and turn it into:

  • “I solved the problem.”

Tip # 4: Scatter your customer service skills throughout your whole resume

Including a “Skills” section is an excellent idea . You can use it to tailor your resume to the specific job opening . However, use it only to highlight your most relevant abilities. If you make it too extensive, it becomes overwhelming and difficult to parse.

If you have more skill keywords that you want to use, incorporate them across your education and experience sections, or put a few more in your introduction. That way, it doesn’t look like you’re trying to stuff your resume full of keywords just to get through the ATS.

Tip # 5: Don’t let a typo get between you and your dream job

We all make mistakes here and there. However, your resume is not the right place for human nature. If you submit a document packed with spelling and grammatical error s, you’ll come across as negligent and unprofessional. Always proofread your work before submitting your final application. If you’re in doubt, ask a friend to look at your resume or use a spellchecker.

This resume summary is jam-packed with specific achievements and a clear eagerness to do the same (or even more) for the new employer.

Note how the resume summary mentions the company’s name! This is important because it proves that the resume is written with a specific company in mind—as opposed to making a generic resume and mindlessly sending it to every company that advertises an open position.

What about this example?

This resume summary provides zero proof that this candidate is the right person for the job. First, no one tends to care about the reasons for the move. Second, if they’re sending in a resume, it’s obvious they’re looking for a job, so why mention it? Third, “motivated and eager to learn” is just too generic and vague to have any specific meaning.

Recruiters probably won’t even read the rest of this resume—unless they have a lot of spare time on their hands, which is pretty rare.

Now, what about resume objectives?

You should opt for a resume objective rather than a resume summary if you’re just starting out in the field of customer service and don’t have many relevant achievements to show.

A resume objective follows the same basic formula as a resume summary. However, a resume objective focuses on skills rather than achievements. Like this:

This candidate used to work in retail, but now they want a customer service job. Their resume objective highlights their transferable skills and relevant achievement. It also mentions the company’s name, which is an important strategy for targeting a resume.

But what about this resume objective?

4. Craft a Work Experience Section

The work experience section is the highlight of your customer service resume, so feel free to take your time crafting it.

List your work experience from the latest to the earliest, always providing the employer's name and location, your exact position, your start and end dates, and a few bullet points.

Sounds simple? Well, too many customer service reps fall into the trap of just pasting their job description into the bullet points. As a result, recruiters get dozens of near-identical resumes saying what the candidates were “responsible for.”

Here’s what to do instead:

Last but not least, it fits the employer’s requirements like a glove! What about this one, then?

  • Responsible for resolving queries and escalating when necessary.
  • Responsible for updating my product knowledge and helping new hires.
  • Tried to persuade people who wanted to cancel their subscriptions.

This example covers the same ideas as the previous one, but notice how vague the job description is. Being responsible for something doesn’t automatically mean being good at it! Before we move on to the next resume section, there’s one more thing to keep in mind when writing your customer service job description for your resume.

Since the resume must be targeted to each position, you’ll have to write several versions of your work experience section if you’re applying for several positions. This sounds like a lot of work—but sending in a generic copied-and-pasted resume won’t get you far. It’s like blindly following a script without even listening to what the customer is saying!

5. Identify the Best Skills for Your Customer Service Resume

Now, what  skills to put on a resume  for customer service jobs? You might be tempted to re-use the skills list from one of your old resumes or even copy and paste a list of customer service skills you found on the internet.

Spoiler: This won’t give you a high recruiter satisfaction rate.

Just like the rest of your resume sections, your skills section should be targeted to a specific job ad. Here’s how to do it:

  • Read the job ad carefully, highlighting any skills-related keywords you come across.
  • Think about which of these skills you actually have (be honest with yourself here!).

Most large and medium-sized companies use a kind of software called ATS (Applicant Tracking System) to parse all incoming resumes and filter out irrelevant applications. How to Write a Customer Service Resume

If you’d rather make your own customer service resume from scratch, follow our tips below to make sure yours is just as good as a professionally made resume.

With all resumes it’s critical to pick the right format.  We find that the right format is relative to experience.  If you have tons of experience in customer service, you may want to use a  combination resume format  to highlight both your years of experience and accolades.

2. Common Skills

Customer service software.

Most experienced customer service representatives have worked with customer service software systems, like ZenDesk and Kayako.  If you have worked with this kind of technology, be sure to clearly state that you know it and are versed in its use.  This means less training time for any company you go to work for, so it’s a huge bonus to a hiring manager.

Communication Abilities

In customer service, your job basically boils down to talking. As such, you need to be good at this, whether it’s over the phone, email, in person, whatever.  You’ll also have to be able to stay professional when customers are unruly and unreasonable , which is certain to happen eventually.

Salesmanship

Beyond just communication, however,  you’ll have to learn to sell your companies products and services . You’ll need to know how to upsell and mention related products and special offers while you assist customers, and you’ll also have to convince customers just in search of information that the right time to buy is now. These are skills that are only gathered through experience, so if you possess them, make sure you mention it on your resume.

Soft Skills

There are a bunch of soft skills you should cultivate if you plan on working in customer service. Here are a few to mention in your skills section:

Self-motivated Patience Positive attitude
Takes direction Persuasive Empathetic and understanding

3. What to emphasize

Communication skills and experience are your biggest weapons when writing your customer service resume.  Make sure you highlight and talk up those skills – forgetting to do so may get your resume tossed in the round file cabinet.

Also,  ensure your resume looks clean . Use lines to separate sections. Use bigger and bolder fonts for company and school names. Smaller fonts and bullets for duties and achievements. The biggest thing on the paper should be your name at the top. And stick with a single font, or if you switch, at least be consistent between serif and sans serif fonts. Mixing them can look tacky.

4. Emphasize Key Points with Adjectives

Using adjectives is one of the easiest ways to emphasize and enhance the important points in your resume. We’ve compiled some of  the best adjectives for customer service positions  below:
