7. Register Your Business in Uganda

Once you’ve picked the perfect business name, it’s time to make it legal and protect your brand. Registration is done with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).

There are 3 Key activities when you’re registering a business:

  • Search for the business name with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau. This will take only 30 minutes. It is advisable to have at least 3 proposed business names.
  • Reserve the Company or Business Name. This is still done at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau. The Period estimate is 1 – 3 hrs.
  • Register and obtain a Certificate of Incorporation

When your name is successfully reserved, it’s time to sign the necessary forms provided by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). Some of the forms will include:

  • Form 1 – Notice of Beneficial Owners Particulars
  • Form 20 – Notification of Appointment of Director and Secretary For your Company.
  • Form A1 – Statement of Nominal Capital For your company
  • Form 18 – Notice of Situation of Office and the registered Postal address of your company

8. Get a Tax Identification Number

It is mandatory for any person, whether an individual or a non-individual, who earns income above the set tax threshold in Uganda to register for tax purposes.

To identify a person as a duly registered taxpayer, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) issues a Tax Identification Number (TIN). This 10-digit unique number is allocated and provided free of charge.

9. Apply For Licenses, Permits, & Finalize Secondary Clearances

Keep your business running smoothly by staying legally compliant. The licenses and permits you need for your business will vary by industry, location, and other factors. After creating your legal entity, you can go ahead and process all the other secondary clearances with statutory bodies like Posta Uganda, NSSF, KCCA, PPDA, and others.

It is important to obtain secondary clearances from regulatory bodies depending on the nature of your business.

For instance, the Bank of Uganda regulates banks, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) regulates telecom companies, UMRA regulates money lenders, NITA Uganda regulates ICT companies, and the National Drug Authority regulates pharmacies and drug stores. Therefore, it is crucial to research whether your intended business requires any specific permit to operate.

The following are mandatory permits and licenses you must obtain if your company will export products in any of the following sectors;

Visiting a salon for most people is now considered more of a necessity than luxury. Dorothy Nakaweesi explains what it takes to invest and earn from a salon business.

A good hair day can make you feel like you can rule the world, so they say. Due to this the demand for good salon services, the salon business is growing. This time, let us discuss the business idea of setting up a barber shop or hair salon. The idea is premised on making different hair styles and haircuts for both males and females. The business has a good market demand due to the changing fashion of hair trends among Ugandans especially the youth.

Investment capital So what do you require to start? Looking at a modest salon, it would cost one an investment capital of about Shs5 million. This is sufficient to purchase basic equipment such as combs, a dryer, a blow dryer, curling iron, perm rods, towels and styling products in addition to covering a month’s rent for a small outlet. Experts in the industry say with these items, you can also start the business in a spare room or garage at the confines of your home.

“Start with your family members and neighbours they will help you grow the clientele base,” Ms Clara Suubi a hair stylist at Monique Beauty Salon in Kireka a suburb in Wakiso District. However, for those looking out to start a modern salon it would require about $12,636 (Shs45.5 million) total project cost.

According to Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), depending on the customer’s desired style or service being sought for, the production costs assumed are for 312 days per year with a daily capacity of 30 customers. The revenue potential is estimated at $1,560 (Shs5.6 million) per month which translates into $18,720 (Shs67.3 million) per year. The net profit margin is estimated at 36 per cent and the payback period is four months. Depreciation is charged on electrical equipment and furniture and assumes two years life of assets written off at 25 per cent per year for all assets. Direct costs include: materials, supplies and other costs that directly go into production of the product.

Equipment Basically, you should have combs, a dryer, a blow dryer, curling iron, perm rods, towels and combs, as well as styling products. All these equipment can be purchased from the local market.

Demand According to UIA, a salon business has a great market demand in both rural and urban areas throughout the year and a higher demand during festive seasons. However, in order for you to attract more clients, a good location is very key. People who would want to do a makeover need an outlet in a place that is safe and convenient. Experts say in order to attract more and middle class clients who are visit a salon every week, the location of business really matters. If need be, add other social amenities such as a massage parlour, nail clinic and games for the kids. “Look for a spacious place with free parking with a 24/7 security guard to take care of your customers’ property,” Mr Daniel Joloba, the chief executive officer of Big Finance – a firm that does advisory and consultancy for small and medium enterprises, said.

Advice Customer care is very key just like it is in other businesses. “Having good equipment, parking and hair stylists or barbers will not make you retain the clientele when your employees lack customer care-so take note of this,” Ms Jackie Musoke, a beauty specialist shares. You should keep contact details of customers who visit your salon and remind them on when they would have a next visit or inform them of the new services you are introducing. All this shows that that you care about them.

This business is a sensitive investment which requires one to be up to date with the changes in style. This means your employees should often visit beauty schools to get well-versed with the latest trends.

Ms Musoke shares: “Besides the basic training on how to style, plait or cut people’s hair further hands on training will help you to attract customers and retain the old.

Besides some of the items you will be using have some chemicals. That is why your staff should know what they are going to apply to customers’ hair and in what quantities.”

Risk certainty However, the risks involved include fire outbreaks; which can be solved through insuring your business.

Any business regardless of how much you use as capital has the potential to grow into something big.

I mean, we all start somewhere and if your dream is to start a business, it doesn’t matter how much you have as seed capital.

Here are top businesses that you can start in Uganda:

1. Selling second hand clothes

This is among the business ideas in UGANDA that most Ugandans fear venturing into.

However, second hand clothes business is booming and if you are looking for a business to start, this would be the best place to.

The good news is that you don’t require a lot of capital to go into the business. With as little as 300,000 you can start selling 2nd hand clothes.

All you need is to get a good location and know where you will be buying clothes. Most people buy at Owino market in Kampala.

You can be assured that on an average day, you can make a profit of around 15,000 shillings.

2. Salon or barber shop While some people may underrate this business and assume that it is for the uneducated, it is in fact a lucrative business that has the potential of making you good money.

You can start by visiting clients in their home; make enough money to finally rent out a place.

A standard salon or barber stall goes for Ugsh.180,000 to 450,000. From there you can work on getting cash to buy the equipment you need.

3. Boda boda business

This is one of the lucrative business ideas in Uganda that young people especially are venturing into in large numbers.

If you are still looking for a job and have some money saved up, this is a good business start.

A motorcycle in Uganda costs from Ugsh 2,500,000 to 4,000,000. It means that with less the 3,000,000, you can go into boda boda business.

The good thing about this business is that you can be sure that at the end of the day, you can make a comfortable Ugsh 30,000.

4. Mobile money-business

M-money has grown tremendously and it is one of the lucrative business ideas in Uganda today.

Even if this business seems crowded, no matter where you are operating at, you can be assured that at the end of the day you will still make a profit.

Opening a Mobile money business requires you to have at least 3,000,000 but if someone gives you their line to operate with you only require around 1,500,000.

5. Poultry Farming

This is another one of the lucrative business ideas in Uganda that you can start with little capital. And I talk out of experience, being a poultry farmer myself.

Instead of keeping on sending numerous job applications without getting any response, why not better yourself by starting this business?

Starting a chicken rearing business requires a seed capital of as low as 600,000.

Profit increases as you increase the number of chicken.

6. Printing and photocopy business

If you are in college or university, this is one of the most profitable businesses you can start. You could also venture into the business if you are living near a college or university.

Starting such business will require a starting capital of less than Ugsh. 2,000,000.

7. Boiled eggs and smokies

If you have little capital and looking for small business ideas in Uganda, selling smokies and eggs is a business you can think about.

To start this business, sausage, samosa and egg business you need a capital of around 30,000 to start.

One egg goes for around 250 shs and then sell at 500shs. That’s 250 shs in profit. On a good day, you can make a profit of about Ugsh.15,000. in a month you are assured of an income of over Ugsh. 450,000.

All you need is to find a good location and you are on your ways to your first successful small business.

8. Manicure/Pedicure business

The truth is that every woman in Uganda wants to look beautiful and you can tap into this potential by starting a manicure and pedicure business.

I have a friend who is doing well in this business and only needed Ugsh.150,000 to start. Like him, you can start by doing house calls before you rent a place.

9. Car wash business

This is one of the best business ideas in Uganda right now. You don’t require much to start a cash wash, just an area with water supply.

The Ugandan culture is that people would rather pay someone to wash their cars than do it themselves.

If you charge 6000 shillings per car, you can manage to clean 100 cars per day again depending on where you are located. That is 600,000 per day.

Get a dedicated staff and you could be making around 12,000,000 in a month. Get over the mentality that car washing is for the lowly and uneducated people in the society, people are buying plots just from that business alone.

10. Movie shop

This is one of the top businesses you can start with 600,000 in Uganda. It is also one of the easiest and the returns are really good.

If you have a computer or a laptop already, you can just rent out a room and start selling your movies. Most movie shops make a profit of about 120,000 per day; make that 3,600,000per month. Before long you will be having your own chain of movie shops in various major towns.

11. Cleaning service business

One of the most profitable business, there is. It took Alex Nyaga the CEO of Parapet, one the biggest cleaning service provider only 300,000 to start.

He started by hiring women who would clean houses in estates at a charge of 30,000 shillings and would pay these women 15,000 shillings.

Before long, the business had grown and he was able to register a company and now makes over 150 million in a month.

As you can see, you don’t need much to start a home cleaning business.

12. Selling Ice Cream

This is another one of the top business ideas in Uganda you can start.

You need to find a good location like near a school, university or a street with a lot of traffic.

The starting capital for this business in Kampala is 600,000 which means it could be less in another town.

13. Juice blending/fruit business

With so many terminal illnesses like cancer, most people opt to stay away from processed foods.

You can help people adopt healthier lifestyles by starting a juice blending and fruit stand.

With a seed capital of 300,000 to buy a blender and other containers and you are off to go.

14. Selling women handbags

Women love fashion and looking good. You can start selling handbags which I hear fetches a very good profit. People who are in this business get their supplies from places like Eastleigh in Kenya.

And with the advent of social media, online business is booming. You can caret a Facebook page for your business, boost a few posts to reach as many people as you want.

The good news is that, you don’t have to stress about getting the city council permits or a stall when you are conducting this business online.

15. Cereals Business I have seen this work for a lot of people and it is one of the most profitable business ideas in Uganda. Choose a good location and you are on your way to a booming business. You can get your supplies from Eastleigh in Kenya and places like Nyamakima. You can buy them in wholesale and distribute to other sellers within your locality.

Hairdressing and Salon management

The hairdressing industry in Uganda is characterized by a substantial number of small businesses providing unique and complex hairdressing services to clients on a one-to-one basis. The industry suffers high rates of attrition and is nationally recognized as suffering skill shortages. Over recent years the industry has experienced significant structural change with closures and mergers leading to a rationalization of the number of operators. The industry has a very high business failure rate. Having significant hairdressing and creative skills is not sufficient to achieve financial success; these skills need to be complemented with basic business management skills.

Salon management

Salon management is one of the most important areas of education for students who wish to work in, manage, or own their own salon. With a variety of salon management programs available, there are numerous opportunities available to students. Salon management teaches the business aspects of managing a salon. This includes aspects such as human resources, marketing, and financial components. It does not teach practical skills to use such as massage or hair styling, though. Therefore, individuals who work in a salon and wish to manage it or wish to open their own facility may need to take a salon management course to get the skills necessary to do so. These courses can provide an opportunity for growth in knowledge, potentially leading to higher income. In relation to career improvement, some individuals may move into management positions within the salon leadership structures. Others may open or run their own business using the information taught in these programs.

Tailoring and Knitting classes

We offer hands-on informal training since the target beneficiaries of the vocational program are mostly orphans, adolescents living with HIV, and young mothers who did not have a chance to complete formal education. We give disadvantaged youth practical skills to start and manage their own business as an attempt to address the unemployment problem. Our training targets mostly vulnerable young adolescents and youth who are out of school.

We also integrate our training with entrepreneurship and small-scale business enterprise management skills to enable the youth to start and manage their own business. We keep in touch with young people who have successfully completed the training to give necessary support to our trainees in their business ventures.

Thus, the Tailoring and Knitting class courses offer an opportunity for youth to gain skills in using a manual and electric sewing machine, cutting cloth, and creating different designs and fashions, for different types of people.

Hands-on Classes

Our Tailoring and Knitting classes the following course components are offered:

Garment Cutting and making:

Trainees acquire skills in making different attires such as shirts, skirts, blouses, men’s and ladies’ suits, baby dresses, overalls, curtains, cushion covers, name it. We do quality work for our customers.

b) Machine Embroidery:

In this course unit, trainees are trained on how to embroider designs on different fabrics:  cushion covers, tablecloths, blouses, etc.

c)  Screen printing and surface Designing:

We train the youth to print banners, T-shirts for different occasions, badges, cushions, tablecloths, plain fabrics for casual wear etc.

They also tie and dye plain materials with different designs prompting their innovativeness and creativity.

d) Sustainability of the Skills and Vocational Training program

The sustainability of the Skills and Vocational Training program will also be addressed by sub-activities specifically designed to ensure its financial viability.

First, under the second activity, a business plan will be developed that will assess the costs as well as the potential revenues based on detailed market research in terms of technical and non-technical training services that could be provided to companies, individuals, and institutions. The business plan will also include capacity development plans for the training center .
