What Is Research Methodology? A Plain-Language Explanation & Definition (With Examples)

If you’re new to formal academic research, it’s quite likely that you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all the technical lingo that gets thrown around. And who could blame you – “research methodology”, “research methods”, “sampling strategies”… it all seems never-ending!

In this post, we’ll demystify the landscape with plain-language explanations and loads of examples (including easy-to-follow videos), so that you can approach your dissertation, thesis or research project with confidence. Let’s get started.

What is research methodology?

Research methodology simply refers to the practical “how” of a research study. More specifically, it’s about how  a researcher  systematically designs a study  to ensure valid and reliable results that address the research aims, objectives and research questions . Specifically, how the researcher went about deciding:

  • What type of data to collect (e.g., qualitative or quantitative data )
  • Who  to collect it from (i.e., the sampling strategy )
  • How to  collect  it (i.e., the data collection method )
  • How to  analyse  it (i.e., the data analysis methods )

Within any formal piece of academic research (be it a dissertation, thesis or journal article), you’ll find a research methodology chapter or section which covers the aspects mentioned above. Importantly, a good methodology chapter explains not just   what methodological choices were made, but also explains  why they were made. In other words, the methodology chapter should justify  the design choices, by showing that the chosen methods and techniques are the best fit for the research aims, objectives and research questions. 

So, it’s the same as research design?

Not quite. As we mentioned, research methodology refers to the collection of practical decisions regarding what data you’ll collect, from who, how you’ll collect it and how you’ll analyse it. Research design, on the other hand, is more about the overall strategy you’ll adopt in your study. For example, whether you’ll use an experimental design in which you manipulate one variable while controlling others. You can learn more about research design and the various design types here .

What are qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods?

Qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods are different types of methodological approaches, distinguished by their focus on words , numbers or both . This is a bit of an oversimplification, but its a good starting point for understanding.

Let’s take a closer look.

Qualitative research refers to research which focuses on collecting and analysing words (written or spoken) and textual or visual data, whereas quantitative research focuses on measurement and testing using numerical data . Qualitative analysis can also focus on other “softer” data points, such as body language or visual elements.

It’s quite common for a qualitative methodology to be used when the research aims and research questions are exploratory  in nature. For example, a qualitative methodology might be used to understand peoples’ perceptions about an event that took place, or a political candidate running for president. 

Contrasted to this, a quantitative methodology is typically used when the research aims and research questions are confirmatory  in nature. For example, a quantitative methodology might be used to measure the relationship between two variables (e.g. personality type and likelihood to commit a crime) or to test a set of hypotheses .

As you’ve probably guessed, the mixed-method methodology attempts to combine the best of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to integrate perspectives and create a rich picture. What is sampling strategy?

Simply put, sampling is about deciding who (or where) you’re going to collect your data from . Why does this matter? Well, generally it’s not possible to collect data from every single person in your group of interest (this is called the “population”), so you’ll need to engage a smaller portion of that group that’s accessible and manageable (this is called the “sample”).

How you go about selecting the sample (i.e., your sampling strategy) will have a major impact on your study.  There are many different sampling methods  you can choose from, but the two overarching categories are probability   sampling and  non-probability   sampling .

Probability sampling  involves using a completely random sample from the group of people you’re interested in. This is comparable to throwing the names all potential participants into a hat, shaking it up, and picking out the “winners”. By using a completely random sample, you’ll minimise the risk of selection bias and the results of your study will be more generalisable  to the entire population. 

Non-probability sampling , on the other hand,  doesn’t use a random sample . For example, it might involve using a convenience sample, which means you’d only interview or survey people that you have access to (perhaps your friends, family or work colleagues), rather than a truly random sample. With non-probability sampling, the results are typically not generalisable .

What are data collection methods?

As the name suggests, data collection methods simply refers to the way in which you go about collecting the data for your study. Some of the most common data collection methods include:

  • Interviews (which can be unstructured, semi-structured or structured)
  • Focus groups and group interviews
  • Surveys (online or physical surveys)
  • Observations (watching and recording activities)
  • Biophysical measurements (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, etc.)
  • Documents and records (e.g., financial reports, court records, etc.)

The choice of which data collection method to use depends on your overall research aims and research questions , as well as practicalities and resource constraints. For example, if your research is exploratory in nature, qualitative methods such as interviews and focus groups would likely be a good fit. Conversely, if your research aims to measure specific variables or test hypotheses, large-scale surveys that produce large volumes of numerical data would likely be a better fit.

What are data analysis methods?

Data analysis methods refer to the methods and techniques that you’ll use to make sense of your data. These can be grouped according to whether the research is qualitative  (words-based) or quantitative (numbers-based).

Popular data analysis methods in qualitative research include:

  • Qualitative content analysis
  • Thematic analysis
  • Discourse analysis
  • Narrative analysis
  • Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA)
  • Visual analysis (of photographs, videos, art, etc.)

Qualitative data analysis all begins with data coding , after which an analysis method is applied. In some cases, more than one analysis method is used, depending on the research aims and research questions . In the video below, we explore some  common qualitative analysis methods, along with practical examples.  

Moving on to the quantitative side of things, popular data analysis methods in this type of research include:

  • Descriptive statistics (e.g. means, medians, modes )
  • Inferential statistics (e.g. correlation, regression, structural equation modelling)

Again, the choice of which data collection method to use depends on your overall research aims and objectives , as well as practicalities and resource constraints. In the video below, we explain some core concepts central to quantitative analysis.

How do I choose a research methodology?

As you’ve probably picked up by now, your research aims and objectives have a major influence on the research methodology . So, the starting point for developing your research methodology is to take a step back and look at the big picture of your research, before you make methodology decisions. The first question you need to ask yourself is whether your research is exploratory or confirmatory in nature.

If your research aims and objectives are primarily exploratory in nature, your research will likely be qualitative and therefore you might consider qualitative data collection methods (e.g. interviews) and analysis methods (e.g. qualitative content analysis). 

Conversely, if your research aims and objective are looking to measure or test something (i.e. they’re confirmatory), then your research will quite likely be quantitative in nature, and you might consider quantitative data collection methods (e.g. surveys) and analyses (e.g. statistical analysis).

Designing your research and working out your methodology is a large topic, which we cover extensively on the blog . For now, however, the key takeaway is that you should always start with your research aims, objectives and research questions (the golden thread). Every methodological choice you make needs align with those three components.

According to Dawson (2019),a research methodology is the primary principle that will guide your research.  It becomes the general approach in conducting research on your topic and determines what research method you will use. A research methodology is different from a research method because research methods are the tools you use to gather your data (Dawson, 2019).  You must consider several issues when it comes to selecting the most appropriate methodology for your topic.  Issues might include research limitations and ethical dilemmas that might impact the quality of your research.  Descriptions of each type of methodology are included below.

Quantitative research methodologies are meant to create numeric statistics by using survey research to gather data (Dawson, 2019).  This approach tends to reach a larger amount of people in a shorter amount of time.  According to Labaree (2020), there are three parts that make up a quantitative research methodology:

  • Sample population
  • How you will collect your data (this is the research method)
  • How you will analyze your data

Once you decide on a methodology, you can consider the method to which you will apply your methodology.

Qualitative research methodologies examine the behaviors, opinions, and experiences of individuals through methods of examination (Dawson, 2019).  This type of approach typically requires less participants, but more time with each participant.  It gives research subjects the opportunity to provide their own opinion on a certain topic.

Examples of Qualitative Research Methodologies

  • Action research:  This is when the researcher works with a group of people to improve something in a certain environment.  It is a common approach for research in organizational management, community development, education, and agriculture (Dawson, 2019).
  • Ethnography:  The process of organizing and describing cultural behaviors (Dawson, 2019).  Researchers may immerse themselves into another culture to receive in "inside look" into the group they are studying.  It is often a time consuming process because the researcher will do this for a long period of time.  This can also be called "participant observation" (Dawson, 2019).
  • Feminist research:  The goal of this methodology is to study topics that have been dominated by male test subjects.  It aims to study females and compare the results to previous studies that used male participants (Dawson, 2019).
  • Grounded theory:  The process of developing a theory to describe a phenomenon strictly through the data results collected in a study.  It is different from other research methodologies where the researcher attempts to prove a hypothesis that they create before collecting data.  Popular research methods for this approach include focus groups and interviews (Dawson, 2019).

A mixed methodology allows you to implement the strengths of both qualitative and quantitative research methods.  In some cases, you may find that your research project would benefit from this.  This approach is beneficial because it allows each methodology to counteract the weaknesses of the other (Dawson, 2019).  You should consider this option carefully, as it can make your research complicated if not planned correctly.

What should you do to decide on a research methodology?  The most logical way to determine your methodology is to decide whether you plan on conducting qualitative or qualitative research.  You also have the option to implement a mixed methods approach.  Looking back on Dawson's (2019) five "W's" on the previous page , may help you with this process.  You should also look for key words that indicate a specific type of research methodology in your hypothesis or proposal.  Some words may lean more towards one methodology over another.

What is Research Methodology?

Research methodology is the underlying framework that guides your research . Research methodology must be systematic and intentional. This does not mean that it needs to be overly complex; it simply means that there must be some thought behind the methods that you choose to base your research on.

In the context of academia, an explanation of the research methodology that was followed  forms an essential part of any article or study.

The research methodology of an academic publication helps readers understand:

  • What data was collected
  • How the data was collected
  • How the data was analyzed
  • Why was the study conducted the way it was

Why is research methodology important?

Let’s take an example. Suppose you are studying the effects of drug X on a specific disease. You find one study that claims drug X is very effective for people who have the disease and another that claims drug X is only effective for people who have not had the disease for very long. In such a case, how do you figure out which study is reliable?

The truth is, although studies sometimes simply find conflicting results, usually, the reasons behind such different results can be found in the research methodology section. There is a possibility that the first study that found drug X to be very effective only studied people who had a milder form of the disease.

Perhaps the first study only examined women, while the second study examined an equal number of men and women. Maybe the drug dosages administered to the study group were different in the two studies. All of this information can be found in the research methodology section of a study and is essential for understanding what the research really means and determining how significant the results are.

There are different types of research methodologies. One methodology is not necessarily better than another. Rather, each methodology is suitable for different purposes.

Quantitative research methodology examples would include studies like the one above on drug efficacy, with efficacy measured in numerical terms (how much percent did a tumor shrink? how much did the white blood cell count increase? how many days did it take for the patient to regain consciousness?).

Qualitative research methods are used to determine how many people support a political policy or how much rising oil prices have impacted food costs for the average consumer.

Qualitative research methodology examples include studies in which people are asked about their perceptions (who they think won an electoral debate, whether they consider themselves middle class), their understanding of an idea (what does kindness mean to you?), or identity concepts (do you consider yourself male, female, or neither?).

Quantitative research methods are used to understand phenomena that cannot be easily quantified. Mixed methods research examples include the use of both broad representative survey data and key informant interviews, where the public is asked their opinion on an issue and then experts are interviewed in-depth to provide a bigger picture of the issue.

The primary driving factor behind your choice of research methodology is simple: what do you want to know, and how can you know it . If you want to find out whether American children prefer lemon or apple-flavored candy so that you can sell more candy in the US, perhaps a survey of a representative sample of children would give you your answer in numerical form; therefore, you should choose a quantitative research method.

However, if you want to understand why so many engineering terms in Korean are of German and Japanese origin, perhaps a review of historical documents and interviews with engineers in Korea might help, in which case, you should choose a qualitative research method.

When you write a research methodology section in your research study, you will need to make sure that you clearly explain what method you chose, why you chose it, and how you went about implementing it.

If you performed a survey among children, how did you find those children? What questions did you ask them? Why did you ask those particular questions? How did you analyze their answers? Did you quantify the data results? How?

All of these elements must be included so that readers can both understand what you did and why you did it. Ideally, someone else who reads your study should be able to replicate it exactly after reading your methodology section and examining your data.

Although it sounds a little overwhelming, writing a research methodology section well is not very difficult. Scientists in Japan Give Robots a Fleshy Face and a Smile

Researchers at the University of Tokyo published findings on a method of attaching artificial skin to robot faces to protect machinery and mimic human expressiveness.

Engineers in Japan are trying to get robots to imitate that particularly human expression — the smile.

They have created a face mask from human skin cells and attached it to robots with a novel technique that conceals the binding and is flexible enough to turn down into a grimace or up into a squishy smile.

The effect is something between Hannibal Lecter’s terrifying mask and the Claymation figure Gumby.

But scientists say the prototypes pave the way for more sophisticated robots, with an outward layer both elastic and durable enough to protect the machine while making it appear more human.

Beyond expressiveness, the “skin equivalent,” as the researchers call it, which is made from living skin cells in a lab, can scar and burn and also self-heal, according to a study published June 25 in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science.

“Human-like faces and expressions improve communication and empathy in human-robot interactions, making robots more effective in health care, service and companionship roles,” Shoji Takeuchi, a professor at the University of Tokyo and the study’s lead researcher, said in an email.

The research comes as robots are becoming more ubiquitous on factory floors.

There were 3.9 million industrial robots working on auto and electronics assembly lines and other work settings in 2022, according to the International Federation of Robotics.

Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for research.

Qualitative research is the opposite of quantitative research , which involves collecting and analyzing numerical data for statistical analysis.

Qualitative research is commonly used in the humanities and social sciences, in subjects such as anthropology, sociology, education, health sciences, history, etc.

Qualitative research is used to understand how people experience the world. While there are many approaches to qualitative research, they tend to be flexible and focus on retaining rich meaning when interpreting data.

Common approaches include grounded theory, ethnography , action research , phenomenological research, and narrative research. They share some similarities, but emphasize different aims and perspectives.

Qualitative research approaches

Note that qualitative research is at risk for certain research biases including the Hawthorne effect , observer bias , recall bias , and social desirability bias . While not always totally avoidable, awareness of potential biases as you collect and analyze your data can prevent them from impacting your work too much.

Each of the research approaches involve using one or more data collection methods . These are some of the most common qualitative methods:

  • Observations: recording what you have seen, heard, or encountered in detailed field notes.
  • Interviews:  personally asking people questions in one-on-one conversations.
  • Focus groups: asking questions and generating discussion among a group of people.
  • Surveys : distributing questionnaires with open-ended questions.
  • Secondary research: collecting existing data in the form of texts, images, audio or video recordings, etc.
  • You take field notes with observations and reflect on your own experiences of the company culture.
  • You distribute open-ended surveys to employees across all the company’s offices by email to find out if the culture varies across locations.
  • You conduct in-depth interviews with employees in your office to learn about their experiences and perspectives in greater detail.

Qualitative researchers often consider themselves “instruments” in research because all observations, interpretations and analyses are filtered through their own personal lens.

For this reason, when writing up your methodology for qualitative research, it’s important to reflect on your approach and to thoroughly explain the choices you made in collecting and analyzing the data.

Qualitative data can take the form of texts, photos, videos and audio. For example, you might be working with interview transcripts, survey responses, fieldnotes, or recordings from natural settings.

Most types of qualitative data analysis share the same five steps:

  • Prepare and organize your data. This may mean transcribing interviews or typing up fieldnotes.
  • Review and explore your data. Examine the data for patterns or repeated ideas that emerge.
  • Develop a data coding system. Based on your initial ideas, establish a set of codes that you can apply to categorize your data.
  • Assign codes to the data. For example, in qualitative survey analysis, this may mean going through each participant’s responses and tagging them with codes in a spreadsheet. As you go through your data, you can create new codes to add to your system if necessary.
  • Identify recurring themes. Link codes together into cohesive, overarching themes.

There are several specific approaches to analyzing qualitative data. Although these methods share similar processes, they emphasize different concepts.

Qualitative research often tries to preserve the voice and perspective of participants and can be adjusted as new research questions arise. Qualitative research is good for:

  • Flexibility

The data collection and analysis process can be adapted as new ideas or patterns emerge. They are not rigidly decided beforehand.

  • Natural settings

Data collection occurs in real-world contexts or in naturalistic ways.

  • Meaningful insights

Detailed descriptions of people’s experiences, feelings and perceptions can be used in designing, testing or improving systems or products.

  • Generation of new ideas

Open-ended responses mean that researchers can uncover novel problems or opportunities that they wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.

Researchers must consider practical and theoretical limitations in analyzing and interpreting their data. Qualitative research suffers from:

  • Unreliability

The real-world setting often makes qualitative research unreliable because of uncontrolled factors that affect the data.

  • Subjectivity

Due to the researcher’s primary role in analyzing and interpreting data, qualitative research cannot be replicated . The researcher decides what is important and what is irrelevant in data analysis, so interpretations of the same data can vary greatly.

  • Limited generalizability

Small samples are often used to gather detailed data about specific contexts. Despite rigorous analysis procedures, it is difficult to draw generalizable conclusions because the data may be biased and unrepresentative of the wider population .

  • Labor-intensive

Although software can be used to manage and record large amounts of text, data analysis often has to be checked or performed manually.

The specifics of each step depend on the focus of the analysis. Some common approaches include textual analysis , thematic analysis , and discourse analysis .

Novel surgery meets bionics in breakthrough for limb amputation

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts ‒ Leg amputations haven't changed much in a very long time.

Civil War-era textbooks describing them look pretty similar to contemporary ones, said Dr. Matthew Carty, a staff surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "You could even dial it back as far as 2,000 years ago," he said, and the standard approach to limb amputation wouldn't be "all that different."

But in recent years, a small number of surgeons, including Carty, have been trying to find better methods.

Collaborating with Hugh Herr, an MIT technologist and double-amputee, Carty developed a new surgical approach, linking pairs of muscles involved in flexing and turning the ankle.

Now, the two have a new paper, published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine , showing their success with seven patients. All had both the surgery, called AMI (for antagonist myoneural interface) and a bionic prosthetic.

The combination, the study shows, allows the seven to walk naturally, at a normal pace, even up stairs and on uneven surfaces, as if the legs were their own.

Amy Pietrafitta, 47, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, was one of the seven.

"This gives me so much mobility, I love it," said Pietrafitta, a para athlete who runs marathons, dances, is a member of The Boston I.C.E. Storm sled hockey team and will compete in the 2024 World Coastal Rowing Championships in Italy in September.

But she was only able to use the bionic lower leg in Herr's MIT lab at the K. Lisa Yang Center for Bionics. Now she's back to her regular prosthetic.

"It did make me a little teary eyed," she said of leaving the bionic leg behind. "It's slightly heart-breaking."

A different way to amputate

In the AMI surgery, muscles typically involved in flexing and extending the ankle are linked, as are those involved in inverting and turning out the ankle.

About 60 patients worldwide have received the amputation procedure since the pair developed it about a decade ago, Carty said.

The surgery takes about twice as long as a typical amputation ‒ about 3 hours as opposed to 90 minutes ‒ but isn't much more technically complicated, he told USA TODAY. It doesn't need to be done at an academic medical center. Any modern hospital is good enough, he said.

"Our hope is this or something like this becomes the standard way of doing amputations around the world," Carty said.

The AMI can also be done after an amputation ‒ even years later ‒ as a revision surgery, as long as the needed muscles haven't atrophied.

Herr, who had his own amputation surgery in 1982 after a climbing accident, said he is interested in getting an AMI procedure himself, though only one of the two muscle pairs remains functional.

Bionic limbs

Movements with the bionic limb are much more natural thanks to the AMI, Pietrafitta and Herr said.

With a regular prosthetic, "your foot fights you back," Pietrafitta told USA TODAY. She's adapted to the pushing she gets from her passive prosthetic, but the bionic one felt much more like a part of her.

She was able to go on point dancing ballet and stay up even longer on the bionic foot than her natural one. "That was amazing. That brought tears to my eyes as well," she said.

Today's most advanced prosthetics typically use electronics to move a synthetic ankle, propelling the person forward. The person essentially has to respond to the signals from their prosthetic.

By contrast, the device Herr developed includes electrodes placed on the skin above the point of amputation, outside the muscles paired by the surgery, and is responsive to them. When the muscle normally involved in lifting the ankle contracts, the prosthetic ankle lifts up, when its opposite muscle contracts, the ankle flexes.

Connecting to the person's own muscles also allows them to sense where their prosthetic limb is in space in a way that is not possible with standard surgery and devices, Herr, Carty and Pietrafitta said.

Eventually, Herr said, he hopes to replace surface electrodes with implanted small magnetic spheres that can more accurately track the movements of the muscle pairings with higher fidelity to better control the prosthesis.

The combination of the AMI surgery with the bionics is particularly powerful, said Dr. Benjamin "Kyle" Potter, who was not involved in the study, but who does similar research and is the incoming chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia.

"The magic here is really in the surgery," said Potter, who recently left the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after 23 years. "What they've demonstrated here is that, although customized, a relatively simple bionic limb can help the patients walk better."

The research proves that natural walking won't require $1 million worth of technology, Potter said. "The synergy of the novel surgery with a prosthesis that can harness that power is probably the real breakthrough here."

The best thing about the surgery, Carty said, is that it enables amputees to take full advantage of available technological advances.

"Longer term, as this experimental technology moves from the lab hopefully to the commercial realm, they will have access to technology that they will be albe to use better than a standard amputee can," Carty said. Herr expects it will take about five years for the bionic limb to become commercially available.

A long, painful journey with a happy ending

Pietrafitta was injured on June 9, 2014, when superheated water fell on her at her job as a restaurant server. She was burned over a quarter of her body, including her torso and left leg.

She had skin grafts and surgeries to reconstruct her damaged leg but was left with something called complex regional pain syndrome.

On a 50-point scale, complex regional pain syndrome is said to register at about a 42 , higher than pregnancy and double the pain of a toothache. "It's called the suicide disease because you can't live in that kind of pain forever," Pietrafitta said.

Her doctor eventually determined said she needed an amputation because her injured leg was no longer functional, but her insurance company kept turning her down for the surgery, saying her pain syndrome made her a poor candidate. For more than two-and-a-half years, she and her doctors fought with the insurance company before a judge finally allowed Carty to give her the AMI amputation on Feb. 27, 2018.

Before the surgery, she took multiple oxycontin, diazepine, clonidine and zoloft every day to cope with the pain. She hasn't needed any since her recovery. "It's been amazing. I have no pain at all," she said. "From one extreme to the other."

She's able to stand in the shower again and even flip her long hair forward and back without falling. If she ever trips, it's because of her natural foot.

"I feel like I still have my limb," she said. "I know I'm an amputee, but my brain forgets in a way, because it feels like so natural."

Herr has long sought to "rebuild bodies, to give persons back after amputation their full limb restoration, where they view the synthetics not an an external tool but as part of their bodies, as self," he said in a call last week with reporters.

"This study is a critical step forward, pun intended, toward that embodiment."
