PhD, Professor, and Postdoc Salaries in the United States

The United States is home to several of the world’s best universities making it a top destination for international researchers. Here’s a breakdown of the most common American job titles and their associated average annual salaries. All salary statistics in this article are in American Dollars (USD) and are pre-tax.

PhD Student

A Master’s degree is not always required to do a PhD in the US. Several top universities offer direct entry PhD programs. An American PhD begins with two to three years of coursework in order to pass qualifying exams. During this time doctoral students are able to develop their research interests and hone in on their thesis topic. They will then write a thesis proposal which must be approved before they can start their dissertation. Most programs require PhD students to gain two to three years of teaching experience as well, either by leading their own class or as teaching assistants for a professor. It takes an average of six years to earn a PhD in the US.

Unlike some European countries, there is no mandated minimum salary or national salary scale for PhD students in the US. PhD students ear n between $ 15,000 and $30,000 a year depending on their institution, field of study, and location. This stipend can be tax-free (if it is a fellowship award) or taxable (if it is a salary e.g from a teaching position). American PhD students are usually only paid for nine months of the year but many programs offer summer funding opportunities. A PhD funding package will also include a full or partial tuition waiver.

After earning a PhD, many researchers go on to a postdoc. A postdoc is a continuation of the researcher’s training that allows them to further specialize in a particular field and learn new techniques. Postdoc positions are usually two to three years and it is not unusual to do more than one postdoc. There is no limit on the number of years you can be a postdoc in the US. The average salary (2023 ) for postdocs in the US is $61,143 per year.

A lecturer is a non-tenure-track teaching position. They often have a higher teaching load than tenure track-faculty and no research obligations. These positions are more common in the humanities or as foreign language instructors. Lecturers hold advanced degrees, though not always PhDs. The average salary for a full time lecturer in 2021-2022 according to the American Association of University Professors was $69,499.

Assistant Professor

This is the start of the tenure track. An assistant professor is responsible for teaching, research, and service to the institution (committee membership). Assistant professors typically teach two to four courses per semester while also supervising graduate students. They are also expected to be active researchers and publish books, monographs, papers, and journal articles to meet their tenure requirements. The average salary for assistant professors in 2021-2022 was $85,063 according to the American Association of University Professors .

Associate Professor

An assistant professor who has been granted tenure is then promoted to an associate professor. An associate professor often has a national reputation and is involved in service activities beyond their university. The average salary for associate professors in 2021-2022 was $97,734 according to the American Association of University Professors .

This is the final destination of the tenure track. Five to seven years after receiving tenure, associate professors go through another review. If they are successful, they are promoted to the rank of professor (sometimes called full professor). Professors usually have a record of accomplishment that has established them as an international or national leader in their field. The average salary for professors in 2021-2022 according to the American Association of University Professors was $143,823.

Salary Cap, Stipends, & Training Funds

Consult the latest salary cap and stipend levels when you prepare your grant application or contract proposal budget. For fellowship and training awards, learn how you may spend funds.

Congress restricts the amount of direct salary paid to an individual under an HHS grant, cooperative agreement, or applicable contract to a rate no greater than Executive Level II of the  2024 Executive Schedule Pay Table .

Effective January 1, 2024, the Executive Level II salary cap level is $221,900 . NIH announced this level and provided example salary calculations in a January 29, 2024, Guide notice .

Your institution may pay you beyond the cap with non-grant funds. Note that for a nonmodular, noncompeting award, you may not get paid beyond the salary cap by rebudgeting from other categories.

For historic levels, see NIH’s Salary Cap Summary (FY 1990-Present) .

NRSA Stipend Levels

The HHS Secretary sets National Research Service Awards (NRSA) stipend levels and adjusts them periodically to reflect increases in the cost of living, as specified in 42 U.S. Code § 288(b)(5). NIH announced the levels for 12 months shown below in an April 23, 2024 Guide notice .

What Do Training Funds Pay For?

You may use funds from Training Grants (T) and Fellowship Grants (F) to pay for the following:

  • Stipends—follow the amounts shown in the Stipend Levels table above.
  • Facilities and administrative costs based on 8 percent of modified total direct costs. State and local government agencies may request full reimbursement.
  • Predoctoral—60 percent of level requested by applicant institution, up to $16,000 per year. You may use 60 percent up to $21,000 for formally combined dual-degree training.

Questions & Answers

How does the salary cap apply to nih-funded awards, may i charge a higher salary to my grant than the cap allows, can my salary increase each year.

Each year, NIH sets a maximum for PI salaries, though your institution can use its own money to pay beyond NIH's limit.

If the limit changes, you can rebudget funds to pay for a higher salary without prior approval, but you can't get more money from NIH.

When NIH announces the levels in its  Guide , we notify you in the NIAID Funding News and post the salary levels on this page.

Can I increase my effort on a grant without increasing my salary and thus keep my budget the same?

Yes, but we expect you to budget for salary at a level that matches your level of effort, up to the salary cap.

Keep in mind that if increasing your effort will alter the scope of your research, you need NIAID's permission for the change in scope.

Read Changes to Project or Budget to learn more.

Salary for a PhD research associate

I recently got a position as an RA in Barcelona and they are paying me EUR 16.422,00 gross per annum for the first six months and then EUR 17.783,00 for the rest of three years. I will also be doing my PhD alongside from the Univ of Barcelona.

Being an international student from Asia, I am not sure if my monthly take home amount will be enough for lodging + transport + food +other expenses. I do know that Barcelona is an expensive city to live in.

Can anyone let me know if the amount of roughly EUR 1000-1100 will be enough for sustenance or not?

Thanks guys.

Application Deadline:

Open Until Filled. Review of application starts on September 30, 2024.

Position Details:

The English department at Texas Christian University seeks an Associate or Full Professor in Rhetoric and Composition to serve as Director of Composition. We are looking for a colleague with a commitment to directing composition programs based on decolonial and anti-racist approaches to writing. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on writing program administration and/or composition pedagogy, particularly in the areas of anti-racist writing assessment and/or social justice in the teaching of writing. Expertise in digital and multimodal literacies is also desirable. We seek especially applicants whose teaching and administrative practices are informed by the perspectives of underrepresented groups. This position follows several new hires in the English department committed to anti-colonial praxis. TCU offers approximately 150 sections annually of two required composition courses (ENGL 10803 Writing as Inquiry and ENGL 20803 Writing as Argument) taught by graduate students, full-time continuing instructors, tenure-stream faculty, and adjuncts. Primary responsibilities of the Director of Composition include curricular design and pedagogical development and working with the TCU Core Curriculum, the Center for Digital Expression, and the Center for Writing. Staffing and scheduling are handled collaboratively with other department administrators. The Director of Composition is a 9-month faculty position with an additional stipend for summer work. This position is supported by an Assistant Director of Composition, a yearly position held by an advanced graduate instructor. The successful candidate will join a cohort of seven tenure-stream rhetoric and composition faculty in a department with a strong commitment to a range of writing genres across the curriculum. Tenure line faculty have a regular 3/2 course load, and the Director of Composition receives one course release each semester (with additional releases available for graduate contributions). All faculty teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor undergraduate and MA theses as well as PhD dissertations, and serve on graduate student committees. The successful candidate will contribute to the dynamic graduate program in Rhetoric and Composition as well as support our undergraduate minor and major in writing and rhetoric.
