World University Rankings 2024 by subject: physical sciences

The physical sciences subject ranking uses the same trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

It highlights the universities that are leading across the following disciplines: mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, and earth and marine sciences.

This year’s table includes 1,370 universities, up from 1,307 last year.

View the World University Rankings 2024 by subject: physical sciences methodology

The California Institute of Technology leads the physical sciences subject ranking, replacing Princeton University, which drops to joint sixth place.

The University of Cambridge is the only institution outside the US to make the top five, ranking in fifth place, up from seventh.

The US’ Yale and Columbia universities switch places to rank 10th and joint 12th respectively.  Columbia shares the spot with the National University of Singapore, which is the highest-ranking university from Asia.

With nine institutions, Germany follows the US and the UK in the list of the most-represented countries in the top 100. In 22nd place, the Technical University of Munich is its top-performing institution.

PhD in Theoretical (Bio-)Physics: Physics & chemistry in plant adaptation at Heinrich Heine University in Germany; Studying for a PhD at Heinrich Heine University (HHU) in Düsseldorf, Germany, offers a rich academic experience with various structured programs and individual research opportunities across different faculties.

While there’s no tuition, living costs in Düsseldorf, especially for international students, should be considered. However, the lack of tuition fees makes it financially attractive compared to many other countries. Düsseldorf, known for its liberal atmosphere and as a business hub, provides a vibrant backdrop for academic life. The city’s cultural scene might appeal to those looking for a balance between rigorous academic work and cultural exploration.

PhD in Theoretical (Bio-)Physics: Physics & chemistry in plant adaptation :

Join the pioneering team at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf as we embark on a groundbreaking journey with our ERC-funded project, “MechSys”. This project offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of developing the world’s first comprehensive plant models built entirely on the principles of physics and chemistry, with a particular focus on thermodynamics. We want to revolutionize our mechanistic understanding of plant anatomy and physiology; we want to understand how plants adapt to different environments and microclimates; and we want to provide blueprints for the engineering of crops that can feed a growing world population.

About the Position: The PhD position, under the guidance of Prof. Martin Lercher in the Computational Systems Biology group, is a gateway to innovative research in theoretical biophysics. With a contract initially for one year and the possibility of an extension to 3.5 years based on mutual satisfaction, you’ll dive deep into the mysteries of plant life, exploring different types of photosynthesis and beyond. We offer a stimulating work environment at 65% TV-L E13 public tariff level, inviting you to contribute to groundbreaking research.

  • Engage in high-impact research that aims to solve complex biological puzzles through physics and chemistry.
  •  Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of physicists, engineers, mathematicians, biochemists, and biologists.
  • Contribute to pioneering models based on differential equations and optimal control frameworks, focusing on the plant’s interaction with its environment and the theoretical optimization of enzyme kinetics.

What we’re Looking For:

  • Passionate individuals with a strong background in physics, biophysics, chemical engineering, or related fields.
  • Creativity, analytical skills, and a keen interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Previous experience in modeling, simulation, or computational research is a plus.

How to Apply:

Are you ready to make a significant impact in theoretical biophysics and be part of our next big discovery? Submit your application today! Apply now by sending the following documents to [email protected] : Closing date:  11 Oct 2024

  •   A detailed CV
  •   A compelling cover letter explaining your interest in the project
  •   Contact information for at least two academic references
  •    Copies of academic transcripts

Join us at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and push the boundaries of computational systems biology, making crucial contributions to understanding and engineering plant life. Let’s explore the uncharted territories of plant adaptation and photosynthesis together!
