International Social Work Courses and Internships

Preparation for Global Social Work Practice

A growing number of social workers are choosing to live, learn and work abroad in nongovernmental organizations and service agencies. Whether you aspire to work abroad, study social work abroad or build your cultural competence to work with diverse populations in the U.S., the international social work courses and internships at Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) are a great place to start.

We approach international coursework in long-term partnership with communities, adjusting our course content to address what communities need most. Guided by the principles of human rights and global justice and with an emphasis on community impact, our international immersion courses and internships will help you understand the impact of global forces on the vulnerable populations we serve, both at home and abroad. You’ll gain critical skills such as problem solving, a deepening of empathy, and understanding of and respect for other cultures. Most important, you’ll build relationships with and provide support to communities that experience significant hardship.

35,000 Over the last 10 years, GSSW students spent over 35,000 hours learning and making a difference abroad.

International social work courses.

Bosnia in Transition: The Social Work Response  focuses on human services responses to the Bosnian War and genocide. Students learn firsthand about resilience, the dynamics of genocide, ongoing efforts to establish and maintain peace, and challenges posed by PTSD, economic hardships, a culture of genocide denial and thousands of unidentified missing persons.

As one GSSW student said, “Hearing survivor stories of loss and resilience was emotional, heartbreaking and oddly uplifting. This was because of one common theme across the country: hope.”

Social Work in Kenya: Context, Empowerment and Sustainability  emphasizes wildlife and biodiversity protection, sustainable development and community empowerment. GSSW partners with Africa Network for Animal Welfare, which allows students to build rich relationships with Kenyan citizens and tribal communities while promoting conservation and animal welfare. Students gain a global perspective on the connection between the health of people, animals and the environment. This One Health framework gives students a deeper understanding of vector points related to poverty, gender equality and social development in East Africa.

“A community’s capacity to advocate for itself and for environmental health is an important measure of social justice, and the empowerment of local people is at the heart of GSSW’s immersion service learning courses,” says course instructor and clinical professor  Philip Tedeschi .

In partnership with the University of Denver Josef Korbel School of International Studies,  Social Work and Latin American Cultures, An Intensive Practice and Spanish Immersion  explores human rights issues in Chiapas, one of the poorest areas in Mexico. Students meet with communities that are resisting local mining efforts and learn about alternatives to capitalist development projects. Students also speak with human rights nongovernmental organizations and service providers to understand the needs on the ground as well as the circumstances and economic policies that lead to migration to the U.S.

“It was one of those courses where the learning doesn’t end after the trip. I am going to be thinking about it and processing the information as I continue to move through the world,” says MSW student Sam Espinoza.

Watch a video  about this course.

Social Work and Social Justice in South Africa  exposes students to community-development challenges as well as environmental and social justice issues in a South African context. Students work directly with South African social workers to empower each other, exchange ideas and build coping skills.

“Sometimes we have to leave our familiar surroundings and immerse ourselves in a place far away that is different enough to make our eyes and ears and heart open wide to see, hear and feel what is going on in our own communities back home,” says course instructor and associate professor  Karen Bensen . “Learning about social justice issues in post-Apartheid South Africa and connecting deeply with South African social workers helps us learn about ourselves and racism in our own communities.”

In the course Social Work in Kenya: Context, Empowerment and Sustainability,   “We saw specific examples of how complex social issues are intertwined with environmental challenges and how we can and should develop interventions and policy that improve the health of people, animals and the environment. Courtney Brown, MSW ’15, Alumni

International Social Work Internships

Students work alongside community members, partnering with local and international organizations seeking to address local and regional issues, including prosecution of war crimes, protection of human rights and cultural–historical national heritage, advancing women’s rights, legal aid and more. Visit the  student blog  to learn more about the experience.

Our internships focus on the education and development of women and girls, accessing their potential and addressing gender inequalities within the slums of Kibera. Students engage in grassroots leadership directed at poverty alleviation through social work empowerment and strength-based practices, where communities can become their own agents of sustainable change and successfully address problems such as poverty in their entirety. Internships also focus on broader environmental and biodiversity issues, the humane treatment of all animals and the pressures facing communities in Kenya.

Social Work Study Abroad Programs

As a student of social work you are committed to improving the lives of other individuals and communities. This often involves interacting with people from cultures quite different than your own; and more often than not, it tackles issues such as poverty, human rights, and development. Of course, the United States is not the only country to face these issues and studying social work abroad may broaden your perspective and deepen your studies. People all over the world are suffering from social injustices, and every country approaches their problems with unique policies. Social work programs abroad may bring you a fresh perspective of how to approach things and a better knowledge of what works and what doesn’t.

Social Work Programs Abroad

Just as important as understanding the issues, however, is understanding how to communicate with people from other backgrounds. What better way to practice cross-cultural communication than by studying social work abroad? By spending time in another country, you may meet people from all walks of life. If you seek out social work internships abroad or volunteer opportunities, you may also learn how to best help the locals in need. You may return home with great stories and examples to share with friends and potential employers alike. Hands on experience in a social work internship may also provide you with guidance for where you’d like to go in the future.

Social work programs abroad for graduates

Depending on your current education program, you may also want to consider alternatives for your international social work experience. For instance, you could finish your current program and pursue your MSW abroad. Social work graduate programs abroad may offer different completion schedules or costs than a domestic program would while also giving you the international experience you want. If you are interested in pursuing your social work career internationally, studying abroad makes perfect sense and may provide you with the network and contacts to pursue your goals.

International social work programs abroad

You’ll also want to give some thought to where you might be most interested in finding international social work programs. Are you interested in working with a Spanish speaking population after you graduate? You may want to consider social work programs in Spain or Latin America. Dying to explore the land of Lord of the Rings between classes, consider studying social work in New Zealand. Have a passion for Oktoberfest or high quality cars, look into social work study abroad programs in Germany. The list goes on but you get the point. Studying abroad is a unique opportunity to combine your academic and professional goals and personal interests and find a program that inspires you.

One of the other key benefits to studying abroad is obviously the potential for language acquisition. You may find that you want to enroll in an intensive language program in conjunction with your social work abroad program. Even if you don’t have immediate plans to work with French-speaking clients after you graduate, you don’t know when that skill may be handy in the future.

International social workers play pivotal parts in addressing these issues along with natural disasters, sex trafficking, slavery, violence, and racial inequality.

Studying from a global perspective positions graduates for opportunities with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like the International Justice Mission and the World Health Organization.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that demand for social workers will spike faster than average by 7 percent through 2032. Additionally, according to recent data collected via UNICEF, 1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty and 750 million people lack adequate drinking water.

Why Does An International Social Work Degree Matter?

Why does international social work matter? International social workers can work in Africa, South America, the Middle East, and practically anywhere in the world where international aid and human compassion are needed. Many governments, in fact, welcome international aid and social workers.

Volunteers and employees of NGOs ensure that food, medication, and other assistance get to the people who need them the most. In addition, there are many other degrees available from accredited social work schools .

What Is Global or International Social Work?

Global social work describes a career path where students decide to dedicate their lives to alleviating suffering around the world. Most programs that target these students include topics such as displacement, migration, climate change, poverty, and similar training that will prepare students to provide aid without disrupting the culture.

Indigenous peoples often receive aid and mentoring from student volunteers. However, it’s important to understand the boundaries that define independence, dignity, and respect.

What is international social work practice? Many governments rely on aid organizations to provide infrastructure and deliver food as well as crisis management. This could include traveling to countries where floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters have left people without their homes, livelihood, or necessities. It’s different from typical domestic social worker positions which deal with families, community groups, or individuals on a micro level.

What is global social work in terms of employment opportunities? Many colleges and universities have relationships with international NGOs that are always on the lookout for qualified specialists such as social workers. With an MSW in international social work, students can also take on leadership positions on the administrative or operations end.

What is international social work practice? It could be a vastly different experience from one individual to another. Climate, demographics, and political and social constraints can make this job far harder in some parts of the world than in others.

What Can I Do With a Global or International Social Work Degree?

With a global MSW degree, graduates can qualify for international social work jobs. What can someone do with an international social work degree? Graduates seeking global social work jobs can look into employment opportunities with the United Nations or The World Health Organization.

There are also international MSW jobs that focus on the legal rights of target populations. International Justice Mission is one such organization. Global social work careers also include organizations that provide aid to refugees, such as the International Rescue Committee and the Danish Refugee Council.

To obtain international social work jobs, graduates must have the licensing, education, and work experience required by specific agencies. Typically, this means earning a bachelor’s degree in social work, speaking a foreign language, engaging in community organizing, or gaming social work experience at home. Additionally, global social work jobs have specific education requirements such as getting an international MSW.

Your Global or International Social Work Degree

To gain work experience as a social worker, students will need a license in their particular state. Most hiring organizations for MSW international jobs require at least five years of social work experience.

It is worth mentioning that students can hold undergraduate degrees in other fields and earn an MSW. Many MSW social workers have a bachelor’s degree in human services , psychology, or sociology.

International MSW jobs may also require cultural sensitivity. Global social work careers often require spending time in communities without some modern conveniences, such as indoor plumbing or running water.

Program Types

As you can imagine, there are study abroad programs all of the world that highlight and compliment different aspect of social work. These are some of our top picks.

Public Health in Thailand

Thailand is fighting on the front lines, and winning! Famous for their innovative public health campaigns (search “Mr. Condom in Thailand.” No, really! Seriously! We’ll wait.) Thailand provides a fabulous environment for students interested in an intensive immersion experience. Combine that with the fabulous food, student life and vibrant Thai history and culture, and Thailand is an ideal destination for anyone interested in social service.

Development in Brazil

As a rapidly growing country with huge disparities between rich and poor, Brazil is a fascinating place to help burgeoning communities. Students can work in many roles supporting education, rebuilding neighborhoods and organizing social campaigns.

Education in South Africa

South Africa provides a singular opportunity for students to see first hand the complicated healing process in a troubled country. Because of the extensive work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, as well as many grass roots organizations, South Africa is an incredible destination to see a nation rebuilding itself. Many programs offer chances to work in education and students can assist in the process of building a better tomorrow.

Planning Your Trip

Students interested in studying social work abroad will have a lot of options, and a lot of decisions! Courses relating to the fundamental aspects of this field are present in study abroad programs across the world. To choose a program, you'll have to consider your goals and what you would like to get out of the experience. Here are some important things to keep in mind.

Academic Life

The first major decision is what type of academic experience you're hoping to have. One choice is a more theoretical, classroom-based experience. This will be more similar to the classes you're used to taking at home. This is a great choice if you want to know what to expect and are willing to work hard - but also want to learn a lot! One great benefit of this program is that you'll be exposed to tons of important concepts from a totally different point of view, as you read textbooks created in another country and listen to professors who have worked in your host country's social work field. Another choice is a more hands-on program - this will certainly provide quite a different academic experience! You'll be working on a project in the field and will learn as you go.

This choice will be more of an adventure, as it's hard to predict exactly what you'll be doing going in, but it will certainly be eye-opening and valuable. Also, the experience will be great preparation for your career after graduation, and may even help you to narrow down your interests and figure out exactly what path you would like to pursue. Also, remember that many study abroad programs combine both of these options, which may provide you with the perfect balance.

This is a very important thing to consider as well. Many students heading abroad are really hoping to learn or practice a new language - this is a great goal and can certainly be combined with a social work program abroad! Working with people in the field is a great way to practice your conversation skills. If you're trying to choose a destination, review your future career goals and choose a language that will help you to communicate with future clients.

If you'd prefer to stick with English while abroad, this is totally possible, too! Consider heading to England, Australia, or another English-speaking country - you'll still be exposed to new culture and fun adventures but won't have to worry about the language barrier. Or, find an American University abroad. This way, all of your classes will be taught in English - taking some of the pressure off your coursework - but you'll still be able to pick up the basics of a new language when conversing with new friends and throughout the city.

There are tons of different housing options available, depending on what you're comfortable with. A homestay is a great option if you want to completely immerse yourself in the daily life of your host country. This is a great way to meet local people and really become a part of the community. Another option is living in a dormitory, which offers a more traditional college experience and will allow you to meet tons of other students, both international and native, which means lots of fun and enriching social opportunities.

Cost & Funding

Taking time off to go abroad can be financially challenging, but fear not, there are a multitude of scholarships that apply to both service-oriented programs and general study abroad. Be sure check if your school offers any scholarships as well!

Fully Funded PhD Programs in Social Work

Fully Funded PhD Programs in Social Work

Last Updated October 9, 2022

Next in my series on  How To Fully Fund Your PhD,   I provide a list below of universities that offer full funding to all students admitted to their PhD programs in social work or social welfare. With the average cost of a doctorate degree exceeding $100,000, gaining acceptance to a fully funded program is ideal.

When a doctoral program indicates that they provide full funding to their Ph.D. students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the three to the six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential Ph.D. programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad. You can find several competitive, external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, but the best funding strategy is to apply to Ph.D. programs that offer full funding to all admitted students.

Ph.D. courses prepare students as scholars with conceptual and methodological sophistication.

  • The history and philosophy course focuses on the intellectual history, current status, and innovation of social work ideas, ideologies, and theories.
  • In the research sequence, students learn both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, designs, advanced modes of analysis, theory for research, appropriate applications, and research design which centers racial and social justice.
  • The policy course provides the opportunity to analyze policies of interest to the student and how policies impact populations of interest.  Students develop and apply a critical perspective when considering human problems, strengths, and strategies for change and transformation.
  • Integrative papers and electives help students develop deep understanding in areas of special interest.
  •  A required course as well as teaching seminars for GTAs prepare students to be effective educators.
  • The dissertation involves advanced and focused research into a topic selected by the student, based on quantitative, qualitative, historical, conceptual, or other methods of inquiry.

GTA & GRA - Teaching and Research Opportunities

Our Ph.D. program contributes significantly to the model of strengths and community-based research, service, and education developed by the School. Under the direction of faculty members, many Ph.D. students work on research projects and serve as teaching assistants. For example, doctoral research assistants work in such areas as aging, asset-building, child welfare, criminal justice, diversity issues, domestic violence, health and disability, child and adult mental health, poverty, social policy, substance misuse, and LGBTQ+ populations.

It is part of the School’s mission to focus on teaching, inquiry, and practice that benefit populations who have been oppressed by our systems and institutions. The School is committed to diversity, inclusion, and multicultural perspectives. Many of the faculty are involved in research and service projects which aim to achieve direct and positive impacts on Black, Indigenous and people of color as well as other oppressed groups. Ph.D. students work with faculty to bring these projects to life.

  • 9 credit hours of electives.
  • An integrative paper.
  • A comprehensive examination process.
  • Completion of a dissertation.
