1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Sciences

Summary of phd program:.

Food systems across the world are facing a period of radical change, both due to the recognition of food-related environmental damage, but also due to climate impacts. Rapid change is unavoidable, but rapid transitions could help resiliency to impacts while reducing environmental harms. The Great Food Transformation suggests three main pillars for change: 1) Dietary change, 2) Food waste reductions, and 3) production changes. However, dietary change comprises by far the largest opportunity, especially in high-income nations. This Great Food Transformation would reduce the environmental damage from the food system and would also free large areas of land with climatic impacts. Reductions of biogenic methane would further have a cooling effect even in the short term.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Resilient Ecosystems and Flourishing Communities

REFloC draws from the disciplines of economics, sociology, public health, sustainability science, and law. Our mission? To delve into the heart of the vulnerabilities of Forest Dependent Communities (FDCs) using Ghana as a case study to discover innovative conceptual, methodological, and policy solutions. Climate change has necessitated a global focus on sustainability, and our research will explore the meanings of lands and forests as conduits for the mutual development of humans and the environment.

4. fully funded phd position in standards for quantum applications in finance.

The project will examine the role of private rulemaking, in particular through standardization, as an instrument for ‘lawmaking beyond the state’. Characteristic of lawmaking in relation to new technologies that can be applied globally is that private regulators, rather than state legislators, are often the first to introduce new rules. ‘Private rulemaking’ here includes rulemaking by dedicated standardization bodies such as ISO, CEN, CENELEC, and private standard-setting bodies such as ISDA, ICMA and the UK Financial Market Standards Board (FMSB); but also rulemaking by means of contractual agreements between producers of technological applications, users, and third parties. These lawmakers can be faster as they are closer to the market and therefore have specific expertise and an awareness of when new regulation is needed.

The PhD candidate’s research is part of the project Sharing secrets: how and why governments and third-party stakeholders disclose intelligence. Secrecy is vital to any national intelligence community, and intelligence is generally collected and assessed for internal government customers. Why, then, do governments choose to disclose intelligence to external audiences and what factors shape how they do so? And what roles and influence do non-state third-parties have in disclosure decision-making and practices? These are the questions that lie at the heart of this study of intelligence disclosure decision-making and relationships in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom (UK).

It is obvious from the electrochemical literature that certain surfaces undergo significant changes, while running a reaction or applying certain electrochemical conditions. This clearly hinders from a full understanding. To shed a light into this darkness, this project aims on the direct observation of the surface under reaction conditions to observe, identify, and quantify the underlying atomic processes that lead to structural changes, and to correlate them to the applied electrochemical reaction. The ideal candidate has scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experience as well as a physical surface science and electrochemistry background.

As a rule, printed BA and MA theses were not included in the library collection. Starting 2010, BA and MA theses of the Faculties of Archaeology, Humanities, and Social and Behavioural Sciences are included in the Student Repository of Scholarly Publications. These theses are not included in the catalogue, but the titles can be found in Google Scholar.

If you are looking for an unpublished thesis it is advised to contact the secretariat of the department where the author of the thesis concerned has graduated.

At the Wijnhaven library you can find theses of Public Administration that were handed in between 2010 and 2011. The theses are available for loan.

Dutch PhD theses

Recent PhD theses (from approximately 2005 on) from all universities in the Netherlands are available digitally through OpenAire , a database with free access. However, in some cases also here a thesis may be under embargo temporarily and access to the full-text version of the thesis may only be granted at a later date.

For paper versions of Dutch PhD theses that cannot be found in the Catalogue  refer to WorldCat . This database contains the holdings of all Dutch university libraries and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. 

International PhD theses

Many recent scientific publications, including PhD theses, are offered full-text in repositories on the internet, free of charge. The websites mentioned below offer access to collections of repositories:

The British site OpenDOAR (The Directory of Open Access Repositories)  offers access to more than 1500 repositories world-wide. All included repositories have been reviewed and approved by OpenDOAR staff members. The site maintains a user-friendly interface.

OATD (Open Access Theses and Dissertations) is a resource maintained by several US University Libraries, for finding open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world. OATD tries to index only graduate-level theses and dissertations that are freely available to download, they leave out closed-access and embargoed ETDs.

The British site ROAR (Registry of Open Access Repositories) also offers access to repositories world-wide, but, contrary to OpenDOAR, is filled automatically.

OpenAIRE (Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe) gives an overview of, and offers access to more than 8.000.000 of Open Access publications from 460+ data providers, with links to funding, datasets and more.

OIAster (originally a project by Michigan University, USA) offers access to scientific publications world-wide. Since December 2009 this database has been integrated in WorldCat .

DART-Europe   is a webportal that provides access to more then 360.000 scientific dissertations from more then 500 European universities. DART stands for Digital Archive of Research Theses

EBSCO Open Dissertations : a free database containing hundreds of thousands digital dissertations and theses. Its contents are harvested from repositories of research universities from around the world.

Graduate programme african studies.

The mission of the GPAS is to enhance the pursuit of PhD degrees in African Studies at Leiden University, by providing the necessary support and intellectual resources to ensure their academic quality, relevance, and originality. In addition, the GPAS seeks to offer academic grounding in African Studies for PhD candidates working on/in Africa at any of the three Faculty Graduate Schools that we collaborate with, viz. the Faculties of Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Law. In doing so the GPAS seeks to foster the mutual exchange relationship between its graduate programme and those of the three faculties’ Graduate Schools. The GPAS offers a monthly PhD exchange seminar to its candidates, alternating a review seminar with a presentation seminar.

Self-financed PhD

We receive many requests from potential PhD candidates who express a wish to do their PhD research in the framework of the GPAS. For all of these requests the following requirements need to be considered: - Are you in a position in which you can finance your PhD research yourself? Although Leiden University does not (yet) charge tuition fees for PhD candidates, doing empirical research can be very costly. The ASCL is not in a position to sponsor PhD candidates. - Do you hold an MA/MSc diploma? - Do you have a certificate of proficiency in the English Language (at least IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 or Cambridge CPE/CAE 185). This requirement does not apply to candidates who have completed their education in any one of the following countries: The Netherlands, Canada (except Quebec), USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia. It also does not apply if you are from another country where higher education is fully in English. - You are required to identify one of the ASCL professors as your supervisor. However, the ASCL professors are limited in the number of PhD candidates they can supervise. That means that the professor best suited for your line of research may not be in the position to supervise you.

The email must include ALL of the following documents: - Research proposal - Detailed budget providing an overview of the expected costs and coverage of those costs - CV - Scan of your MA/MSc diploma and transcripts - If applicable: certificate of proficiency in the English Language (at least IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 or Cambridge CPE/CAE 185) - A letter from an ASCL professor stating her/his willingness to act as your supervisor

All PhDs must adhere to the rules and regulations of the GPAS. External and scholarship PhD registered on or after 1 September 2024 will be required to pay the ASCL a yearly fee of either 400 or 2800 euro (please contact [email protected] for more details).

PhD research at two universities

In some cases, PhD candidates are permitted to follow a PhD track that involves conducting research and receiving supervision at two institutions: Leiden University and another university. On this page, you can read what forms of agreement there are.

Arrangements regarding this joint supervision are set down in an agreement. There are two kinds of agreement:

• A single individual agreement for the joint supervision of one PhD candidate and the defence in the presence of one or more joint Examining Committee(s), after which one diploma or two paired diplomas is/are issued on behalf of both institutions;
• A  programme agreement between the two universities for a multiyear partnership in the supervision and examining of multiple PhD candidates of both parties. A programme agreement of this kind also includes individual agreements for the participating PhD candidates, as appendices.

In this agreement, arrangements are made about such aspects as the research, the supervisors at both institutions, which institution(s) will be the location(s) of the defence, how the Examining Committee will be appointed, and such matters as intellectual property rights.

A model for this agreement is available. Other institutions also have their own model agreements; these can also be used, provided that they include the arrangements that are important for us.

A single individual agreement can be initiated by a PhD candidate; the Graduate Schools of the two institutions will then maintain contact with each other to arrange the details of the agreement and its signing. In addition, the Leiden University Graduate Schools will be in contact with Administration & Central Services (Strategy & Academic Affairs; SAZ), because the agreement needs to be signed by the Rector Magnificus.

If a PhD candidate has ideas for a research stay at a university abroad as part of the PhD track, the PhD candidate will discuss this with the supervisor(s) in the context of discussing the research proposal or formulating the training and supervision plan. It is important to initiate a stay abroad at an early stage, because arranging it can take a long time and the stay abroad should preferably not take place too late in the PhD track. The stay abroad can only go ahead if it is supported by the supervisor and both institutions.

The individual agreement must be signed by the Rector Magnificus of both universities, but it does not require the consent of the Doctorate Board. The agreement is also signed by the supervisor and the PhD candidate.

This consists of one framework agreement together with the individual agreements (or a model for these) of the participating PhD candidates, as appendices.

The framework agreement also contains arrangements about the programme, a management team for the programme (if applicable), the location(s) of the defences, the diplomas and the division of costs.

A model is also available for the programme agreement, and this can be requested from Strategy & Academic Affairs (SAZ). Other institutions again have their own models for programme agreements; these can also be used, provided that they include the arrangements that are important for us.

A framework agreement can only be created on the initiative of the university, faculty or institute, and can only be concluded where there is a plan for long-term academic collaboration between Leiden University and the partner institution, which has been approved at the faculty and university level. A draft version of framework agreements must always be submitted to the Doctorate Board for approval.

The framework agreement is drawn up by the Graduate Schools in close consultation with Administration & Central Services (Strategy & Academic Affairs; SAZ) and with the Graduate School(s) of the partner institution.

Once the framework agreement has been signed, the discussion about the individual agreements will be conducted by the Graduate Schools.

The PhD defence(s)

Subsequent to joint supervision, the PhD defence can take place in two possible ways:

• A single defence in the presence of a joint Examining Committee;
• Two defences of the same dissertation in the presence of joint Examining Committees at both institutions (there will be a certain amount of overlap between these Examining Committees).

If the single defence takes place in Leiden, then Leiden University can claim a PhD premium. If the single defence takes place at the other institution, Leiden University will not receive a premium. Given that the defence will take place in the presence of a joint Examining Committee and will lead to a joint degree, the prior consent of the Doctorate Board of Leiden University is required before a single defence can be organised at the other institution.

If the same dissertation is defended in the presence of joint Examining Committees at both institutions, Leiden University can claim a PhD premium, even if the first defence takes place at the other institution (in the case of a defence at two Dutch universities, the premium will be shared).

Please note: at some universities outside the Netherlands, establishing that the manuscript is suitable to be defended also takes place in the presence of a committee; in the Netherlands, this work is done by the Doctorate Committee. For us, establishing defensibility does not count as a defence to which these rules are applicable.

Awarding the doctorate degree

In the case of both individual and programme agreements, the PhD candidates work towards a single degree that is awarded jointly by both parties (a 'joint degree'). The defence(s) of the dissertation take(s) place in the presence of (an) Examining Committee(s) with members from both institutions. We use the term joint degree rather than double degree to emphasise that dual supervision does not lead to two doctorates.

In the case of individual tracks, the PhD defence in principle takes place in Leiden, unless the Doctorate Board consents to a defence at the other institution (the agreement will contain the location of the defence and cannot be signed unless this consent has been given).

Issuing the diploma(s)

There are three options for the diploma(s):

• one single Leiden University diploma.
• two diplomas, each with one added phrase expressing that the PhD candidate was supervised at both institutions. These are known as 'paired diplomas'. The fact that the diplomas are ‘paired’ emphasises that the two defences result in one single doctorate degree.

               Two diplomas can be issued after:

• one successful defence at one of the partner institutions;
• two successful defences of the same dissertation at both partner institutions.
• one single diploma with two insignias. The Doctorate Board of Leiden University has decided in principle not to cooperate with this, in view of the serious practical challenges and the risk of lower quality of a diploma that has to be produced in two cities and printed with both insignias.

Another possibility is that Leiden presents one diploma issued by Leiden University and the PhD candidate also receives a local diploma at the other institution. We have no objection to this (we do not insist that a paired diploma must always be issued in the case of an individual agreement with one defence).

At the request of the Graduate School, the beadle’s office can issue a supplement with a single Leiden University diploma, declaring that the supervision took place at two institutions. This supplement will actually then be a short version of the individual agreement.

PhD position in Social Anthropology

The project, ‘Futuring Heritage: Conservation, Community and Contestation in the Eastern Himalayas’, led by Dr. Erik de Maaker, funded by a grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO), is looking for a PhD candidate for research in Sikkim (India). The project is hosted by Leiden University’s Institute of Cultural Anthropology & Development Sociology, with Ashoka University in Delhi-NCR as its prime academic partner. The PhD will be jointly supervised by Dr. Erik de Maaker (Leiden) and Dr. Swargajyoti Gohain (Ashoka). The Futuring Heritage project consortium encompasses international organisations, Indian governmental agencies, several NGOs as well as a tourism operator active in the eastern Himalayas.

Futuring Heritage investigates how national and international/ governmental and non-governmental programmes aimed at environmental conservation and climate change adaptation in the eastern Himalayas can align with the cultural expectations of the region’s ethnolinguistic minorities. While such programmes are typically presented as ‘community-led’, they often adopt a condescending stance towards residents’ traditional usages of forests, rivers and mountain slopes, which are cultural practices, rooted in the past. Rural Himalayan livelihoods as well as schemes intended to halt deforestation and sustain biodiversity encompass heritage, either authorised, neglected or unseen. Yet, such activities also anticipate time to come, an intentionality the project innovatively conceptualises as ‘futuring’. This project researches futuring pertaining to usages and perceptions of land, developing new spatial methodologies that integrate satellite imagery with ethnographic sensorial mapping. It explores acts of futuring with reference to spatiality and temporality that reveal how heritage, ontology, indigeneity and governance are essential dimensions of socially and culturally inclusive environmental conservation. To address this issue, the project enables ethnographic research across three sub-projects, all located in the eastern Himalayas of India, and thus sharing the same national context.

This PhD position supports ethnographic research in the Indian state of Sikkim, which is often considered an example of successful community-led environmental conservation. In 2016, Sikkim achieved the status of being the first ‘fully organically producing’ state of India and its Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP) became a UNESCO World Heritage site in the mixed category, recognised for both its cultural as well as natural heritage values. This has altered the way stakeholders interact with each other, in line with differences in how they perceive and value the mountain range and the forests covering its slopes. How does the ‘recognised’ and ‘authorised’ worthiness of a place as World Heritage influence the restriction, alteration and initiation of both human and non-human residents’ access to the farmlands and forests surrounding it, and have implications in terms of situated ritual practices and rural livelihood strategies and the heritagised resources these encompass?

What you will do

You will conduct independent ethnographic research in and around Sikkim, defining your research focus within the overall frame of this project and research objectives in collaboration with various consortium members/ stakeholders including UNESCO (World Heritage acknowledgement), Forest Department (Sikkim state government), WWF (wildlife conservation) and regional NGOs and tourism operators.

• You will conduct research, entailing at least 10 months of ethnographic fieldwork.
• Use GIS mapping and QGIS software, combined with visual and digital methods (GIS training will be provided in the context of the project).
• Use visual and digital methods where appropriate.
• Write a PhD thesis, publishing several of its chapters as peer-reviewed journal articles (including a special issue on participatory mapping), and in a project-related edited volume.
• Contribute to a professional publication, the production of educational materials, and to the creation of the project website, blogs, articles for newspapers, podcasts and a policy paper.
• Participate in meetings and proceedings of the project (e.g. reading groups, co-writing initiatives) and the wider activities of the Institute of Cultural Anthropology & Development Sociology.
• Co-organise and participate in academic and public events
• You will be part of a team comprising two PhD candidates, the principal investigator, and other consortium members. The other PhD and the PI will conduct research in the eastern Himalayas as well.
